CHAPTER 14: Quietus x Mission x Prelude

Slowly pulled out of slumber, Killua opened his eyes, and he waited for his vision to clear. The first thing he saw as it cleared was a beautiful set of russet orbs, looking at him warmly.

"Morning sleepy head." She grinned, leaning towards him as she sat at the side of their bed. She was supporting her weight with her arms as her foot was on the floor and the other knee on the bed. It was that smile that ensured him of the wonderful day ahead.

"Ohayou, Gon."

She chuckled at this (he suspected he might've given a embarrassingly dreamy expression) and stood up to face him, pointing at her apron that was then in his line-of-sight. "I already finished breakfast.

"It's time to eat. You don't want to be late for your match." She said, and after pulling her to the bed one more time (thank goodness he didn't have much of a morning breath, not that she'd care either way), he did as he was told.

He watched her as she arranged the table for them, his chin resting on his palm.

Time has been so good on her, he mused—it always had, but this had been beyond expectations. He feared he'd stare at her for durations far beyond proper the rest of his life (so far that theory hadn't been proven wrong). Fortunately, even if she did sense his ogles… she didn't seem to mind them at all.

When she finished, she stood beside him for a few seconds, like waiting for him to begin eating. "I'm not hungry though." He said, but not because the food was unappetizing. He could tell he'd ravenously eat it later on.

He didn't want to eat yet because, as he watched her—for some reason he couldn't comprehend—he felt like he hadn't seen her in years and was in a terrible need to make up the time. It was an odd feeling, he mused, but it wasn't like it was a feeling he or she disliked.

"Killua?" She said, tilting her head in puzzlement as he held her arm and just went still for a while. Then he grinned at her, making her blink, and she didn't realize he had pulled her into his lap until she was already there.

That morning, he decided to kiss her senseless.

It was a wonderful morning indeed.

Later that morning, the crowd went wild as a fight just ended, and the master of ceremonies (who didn't seem to change at all, all these years) yelled for the victor's name.

Killua won the game easily, of course.

The 200th floor was a cinch, but they didn't really want to bother with the floor masters. They didn't have the time or the motivation to even attempt to be one. In any case, he was greeted by his number one fan: Gon (who gave him the most rewarding little kiss), along with Zushi and Wing.

"Congrats Killua!" Zushi said. He was still a kid, like he didn't grow the past five years while he and Gon were well into their teenage years now. He saw Wing's un-polished way of dressing and thought Wing hadn't changed at all either.

"Okay, my turn!" Gon said, excited as always, and cracked her knuckles and stretched and did other warm-ups. Although, interestingly, Gon did warm-ups to tone down her enthusiasm. She gave him a sweet peck on the lips before finally walking past him and heading to the arena.

But as he watches her with pride, standing so firmly in the middle of the gigantic ring, and cheered on by the boisterous crowd—shadows appeared in front of her: Her opponents.

His eyes widened.

Opponents?

And slowly, as the shadows slowly took form, he could feel his heartbeat go faster, and faster, until it felt like it just stopped at the sight of his father and his brother standing so terrifyingly near Gon… inside the arena.

And—frozen still by an unknown force—

He ended up watching her scream all over again.

.

His eyes opened wide again, this time even wider, and this time it wasn't her that met his clear sight—It was the white ceiling above. The after image of her suffering face still etched, stamped, embossed inside his head.

The horrifying part of it all was that he had been having the same dreams for so long—and he still couldn't determine he was dreaming while he was inside.

Almost as if it was a premonition.

Then memories of the first year came flooding to his head again—like it did every single time.

When returned to the estate five years prior, he returned an empty shell. His insides, his head, everything were blank, emotionless, and pit-less. It was like every part—every cell—of his body was suddenly numb, ringing.

He wasn't feeling anything and he wondered that maybe—just maybe, in contrast to what he believed in every time he was insecure of his power to protect her—that he'd survive without her, after all.

He'd just need to remain a blank slate.

But then time passed and he realized the numbness was only because he lost something so large—such a huge part of himself—that it simply didn't feel real.

But more suns slept and reappeared—and too-soon every atom in his body started to finally and completely absorb the fact that she was no longer there. It was excruciating—the pain that followed the realization. It wasn't like anything he felt before, even when he witnessed her death.

The grief and the suffering over a loved one's death was indescribable—he doubted he'd ever be able to imagine it until he experienced it himself.

But in the end…, he truly, truly, wished he never understood.

Death was always the easier choice—the most enticing, sinfully attractive choice—yet he couldn't even begin to plan it. He wanted the pain to disappear, but with that Gon herself would disappear, too… and that was something he couldn't bear to commit.

So instead, he spent a lifetime of tears in his room like a baby that he has become.

He just knew he wouldn't be able to go through that sort of pain again.

.

"That is so like you to cry while sleeping. Noisy."

He closed his eyes and heard the sound of propellers more clearly to slow down his erratic heart, to deal with the fact that someone else was in the room with him, standing apathetically, watching him brood for his own amusement. He remembered he was in one of the family's zeppelins, on his way to a mission with Milluki.

Killua tried not to be surprised by Milluki's appearances, particularly since he didn't want to know what he could be doing to get Milluki in his room. Milluki didn't seem to see his glare as he chewed on some of his chocolate bar.

Chocolate bars.

He remembered when he used to love them, now it reminded him of sweetness he might not experience again. "I thought you're living chocolate for good?" He uttered stoically knowing that Milluki was actually keeping his weight in check now. He really just wanted to change the topic.

Milluki, however, shrugged. "Chocolate's good for your brain. Plus I get enough exercise now." The ivory-headed Zoldyck said and his apathetic expression turned to a frown. "I wish I could say the same for my sleeping habits."

Killua didn't say anything, and Milluki took it as a sign to go on. "Yelling out her name every single night so freakishly loud at home is bad enough—imagine what it feels like to me to be stuck with you thousands of miles above sea level."

"Shut up Aniki." He snapped, stood up, and headed for the blimp's balcony.

…where he was reminded, once again, of Gon and their promise and suddenly he realized—remembering the first time he saw her in five years—that he hadn't spent a lifetime of tears back then, after all.

Damn it.

Meanwhile, on a blimp going towards the opposing direction, Kurapika was sitting on a velvet couch by the window, staring into the sky.

It had been an unusually uneventful day, he thought, and a particularly stressful one at that… which was something he had to get used to again, after all those merry days with Gon.

He found a lot of things during his chat with the two blondes (which he still had a hard time absorbing as a mother and son pair)—particularly that news of a Wing-san's death and the comatose state of his youngest protégé. But, of course, he had to put out his cards first.

He told them everything he knew, there wasn't really any reason to hide it, especially when Gon and Killua trusted their mentor so deeply.

Well, he did keep Mito's pregnancy to himself. That simply wasn't something one spread around.

Bisuke looked grim as he told his story while Pariston was seemingly thinking of something deep. For the latter, perhaps it had something to do more with the fact that Ging has been in the supposedly unexplored part Dark Continent for five years.

Bisuke then closed her eyes and sighed, genuine concern in her eyes and Kurapika was relieved just by her willingness to assist them. "How can I help?"

He nodded. "We just need something—a reassurance—that Mito and her mother won't be harmed. A protection of sorts. The Hunter Association is the best choice."

"I didn't think I'd be playing bodyguard or cupid." Pariston said before Bisuke could even answer. "But it's interesting. Count me in."

Kurapika didn't expect to meet Pariston Hill…, less his help. He worried what part of the plan was interesting to him, especially with his egregious reputation, but at the moment he could use all the help he could get.

In any case, Bisuke didn't seem to disagree with what her son said and stood up straight. "I've always wanted to see that girl again." She said, almost to herself, and watched as Pariston stood up as well and he extended his hand for Kurapika to shake. "Looks like we'll have a little detour, brat."

Kurapika noted that Bisuke's insults were actually endearments, and Pariston let out his trademark smile. "Yes, Mother."

He thanked them for giving him the luxury of breathing more easily for a while.

The Zoldycks landed in York Shin a few hours later. Apparently their mission was to kill Ten Dons, but when he asked why the mission needed them both, Milluki waved it off as if it was an unimportant question. "It was supposed to be me and Aniki." He said, and gave him a knowing look. "But he's probably busy with doing something unimportant, so you were sent with me instead."

"I'm asking why there's a need for two."

"Apparently the Ten Dons are powerful nen users." Milluki said as he swiped his touch-screen device he developed himself. "Nen users rise pretty quickly in the underworld." He scratched his nose and somehow with his current weight Killua thought that he looked a little like Wing. "And the Injus, apparently, were at least twice as strong as the former ten combined. They're likely not there though, but just in case."

And then he stared at his screen for another second before recalling some random trivia. "The Spiders took care of the first generation five years ago." Milluki shrugged. "Kalluto said they're in the Dark Continent now, though."

After listening in silence, Killua gave him a pointed look in the end. "You're pretty talkative today, Aniki." He paused. "Nervous?"

Milluki stared at him for an unusually long second, making Killua wonder if the chocolate really was good for the brain or perhaps his brain shrunk along with his body fat. But to Killua's surprise, the older Zoldyck scoffed at him. "You're joking?" He said sceptically. "First… you don't seem murderous every moment—like you have been these past few… years—and now you joke?

"What happened?" He went on with an eyebrow raised, his face oozing with mockery. "Did Gon magically come back to the living or something?"

Killua froze.

"Oiii Earth to Killua…!" Milluki said, apparently saying something before that. But Killua didn't bother to answer and just went to the terminal as if his brother wasn't beside him. Milluki raised an eyebrow but otherwise shrugged.

"That kid will never fail to weird me out every time."

They arrived at the skyscraper some time later. They were both wearing casual clothing and presences barely noticeable by default, yet they did still catch a few stares due to their appearances. Killua stood by the foyer's entrance with his hands on his pockets, looking uninterested, as he waited for Milluki to finish eating (it was ice cream this time) because his old habits simply died hard.

When Milluki was done, the two Zoldycks stood tall for a moment, mentally planning everything they could in the span of a few seconds, before finally entering the building. With firm and precise movements they walked past security without trouble and into the express elevator, without anyone batting an eyelid—not even the two suited men guarding the special elevator.

Heck, Milluki made sure with two clean movements that they would never blink again.

Killua pressed the button for the highest floor as Milluki stepped in, and with a 'ping!' the elevator door met for a close.

The two of them stood still as it moved up, Killua once again leaning coolly at a wall while Milluki was standing cross-arms while facing the shiny metal door. It was a long way up and Killua thought they could go so much faster, but there was no rush so they didn't move until the door pinged again to open.

They were greeted by pointed guns. "Who are you!? SPEAK!" One yelled, guns remaining steady for the kill. It was either because the people from below didn't answer when the elevator moved, or it was just standard procedure for them to point all entrants at gun point. Either way, the two guards were unconscious a moment later.

"You didn't kill them?"

"There was no need to." He said and Milluki shrugged, not really caring either way.

The next doors were bypassed just as easily. It wasn't even a challenge for Milluki to get past the security. His robot flies easily bypassed the sensors, and it certainly wasn't difficult for the two of them to hide at a close enough distance to control the metal insects.

After three doors and a dozen guards they were already inside the penthouse. As anticipated by aura, the dons were all indeed there, and there were really no injus at all in the vicinity.

But, sending them both was still an overkill.

It was true that the Dons and a few Injus could've ousted Milluki pretty early if it was a close combat fight, however, that wasn't the case this time. Milluki's bomb flies (Killua didn't really bother to know what was with him and flies) landing on their necks early into their entrance pretty much settled majority of the fight. Milluki was threatening in a different sense from all of them.

Those the flies failed to kill, Killua dealt with. It was particularly quick because Killua was in dire need to get away from his brother.

Killua was about to kill the head, Junjo, when his eyes darted towards the folders on the coffee table. The name 'Nostrade' caught his attention and, momentarily letting the gasping Junjo go, went to flip the top fold open.

His eyes widened before he was finished. "What is this?" He asked with eyebrows furrowed deeply, trying hard not to crumple the document. He strode back to where he was and grabbed Junjo's collar.

"Someone unwilling to fight for what he wants deserves what he gets." There were orders 'to kill' him, but already knowing what Kurapika was capable of, it struck Killua's chords in a different way.

Killua wanted to strangle him, but he realized he should just be relieved that Kurapika seemed to have turned down the offer. But what if he didn't reject the offer? That meant Killua was sent to kill him a second time.

His anger was clouding his judgement so forced himself to calm down... at least to some degree. Still, he didn't think his brain was working on anything but fury on his family.

"Oi, Killua." Milluki said apathetically looking from behind, almost as if he was chewing on something nonchalantly again (at this rate he'd really get fat again). "If it will stop you from exploding when I'm in the room I'll tell you there's no point in sending you to kill that blonde again, at least not yet." He paused with a shrug. "It was just coincidence. Our family doesn't do background checks on our victims, remember?"

His shoulder slumped, slightly calmer. In any case, he didn't thank Milluki and just headed to the elevator. Killua heaved a exhausted sigh as the doors opened and closed.

Once again, naturally hiding his presence, they got out the building looking no different from the way they entered.

In the middle of the sidewalks, they blended with the crowd only catching a few glances because their faces and stances were simply different from the rest. Milluki bought some food (with monologue that he'd burn the fat down anyway), and his eyes darting everywhere. Milluki's feet stopped at a poster. "Oh, an auction!" He announced, and turned to wherever it was probably going to be held.

Killua watched Milluki as he disappeared into the crowd and into the building.

At that moment, Killua was already calmer. It was likely that the family had no idea Kurapika was invited as a member of the Ten Dons. Hence, sending two of them meant that either they overestimated the enemy—or underestimated Milluki.

Despite all of the guy's flaws, Killua almost felt sorry for him.

Killua walked through the streets with hands on his pocket and using 'In' to fully blend in, because his physical appearance almost always failed him when he wished to be effortlessly inconspicuous. He regretted the decision as soon as he took a step, but he never found the will to stop walking.

Everything reminded him of Gon—the children running around having fun, the lamp posts that resembled those from AiAi City, the plants and flowers as pure as she was, and even the ice cream truck parked unremarkably at the side.

He knew that even if he tried… that wasn't going to change. So what other choice was there if he had to keep running?

He absent-mindedly tilted his head up to see the skies instead, and hoped maybe the bitterness he felt at the unfairness of the universe would subside, even for a little bit.

He ended up climbing up the highest building and held onto its spire. He felt the strong gusts of wind, something infinitely stronger at that height. It would've blown him away if he wasn't strong enough to carry both weights.

He felt the sensations of the cold wind against his skin, and the thrill of being so high up. He needed this, he really did.

Five years? She could have a lover by now, you know.

His eyes twitched at that seemingly random line and thought once more of the first year she disappeared. What was the thought that had been keeping him alive again?

Ah.

Memories of her—particularly those exclusive to him—would disappear if he died, and that was the only thing that kept him alive. But then she reappeared—alive and well—and suddenly she had a future to create even more memories and affect more people's lives and the only thing that truly threatened that was him and his imminent acts of selfishness.

He let go of his hold of the tower's spire and, not bothering to put even the meagre strength to keep himself balanced, let gravity did what it did best. He manoeuvred himself to face head first to the ground, but otherwise made no movement into trying stop his fall.

It was the strongest he ever felt the wind and that sensation was the only thing he focused on as he fell closer and closer to the ground.

Unlike anyone, his whole life didn't pass by his head in a few seconds. It was probably because he had been in life-and-death situations too many times such reflexes didn't matter anymore. But there was one passing memory that reverberated through his head when he was less than a kilometre from the ground.

It was the young him—still dark and insecure—but there was also Gon, effortlessly lighting a new path for him to take. "Don't give up on yourself, Killua."

He heard a collective gasp of passer-bys.

His eyes widened and his body floated horizontally, his nose a mere inch away from the ground. The aura concentrated on the side of his body facing the pavement…, and a second later, he allowed himself to fall.

He sat at the pavement then, palm on his face, and for a long time the surrounding people were too afraid to come closer. Eventually, a brave old man came forward. "A-Are you alright sir?"

Killua stared at the old man for a while and he could tell everyone's breathing stopped. "Someone unwilling to fight for what he wants deserves what he gets." He repeated, but meant something different when they came out of Junjo's mouth.

"…yes?"

Then their eyes widened at a sudden change in his expression, but he didn't bother and stood up, thanking the man for his concern.

He didn't realize he just sent them a genuine smile.
