CHAPTER 16: Revelations x Conflict x Acceptance
Illumi Zoldyck remained firm and steady as the strong gust of wind met him on his blimp's balcony. His eyes were steady and as blank as always as he stared at his destination. Still several nautical miles away—the island being no more than a dot to a normal person—but Illumi knew the route like it was the back of Killua's head, the island itself even more.
And if he was more expressive a person, he would've sighed, because there was little reason why he was going there in the first place.
It was a matter of habit, really.
After a mission, he had let his mind wonder. And the next thing he knew he was on a flight en route Whale Island. He realized this before they were halfway there, but he didn't have the will to get the captain to change directions. Talking to someone was an expenditure of energy he'd rather not take.
He refused to acknowledge that almost indiscernible need—so difficult to comprehend that he guessed it was practically experienced by the atoms in his body—to be there, something that roused the simple idea of the route was presented to him.
All he heard for a while was the rhythmic sound of the propeller turning and the hum of the strong winds meeting the zeppelin's skin. The same wave of silence was broken not too long later, however, still so many miles away from the island, by strong gusts of auras. By instinct, he hid his presence as impeccably as he could.
He stared at the small shape the island made with deep analyzing eyes, framed by furrowed eyebrows. Two very powerful nen users were battling there, he could feel it all the way from his spot, and he knew one of them was Gon and it was all very troubling.
It was a continuous battle, he could tell, and at the same time he knew there was no En sphere activated anywhere in the island.
The airship was barely into the island's territory, some kilometre from the port, when Illumi lifted his leg to step on the railing and jumped. The airship then began turning around to get back to the mainland, where airports actually exist.
At the back of his head, he remembered how Mito continuously wondered how he got there so quickly by boat.
It was one of the many lies he had told her.
Pushing away the increasingly familiar feeling of dread—a feeling he didn't even understood beyond words until recently—he walked deeper into the woods, presence so well-hidden the animals never even batted an eye as he passed by.
He stopped some few hours later on a spot hidden beneath the trees, close enough to see the house, but far enough to be able to discern too many details. Details meant associations, and certain associations had a tendency to entice quite troubling things inside his gut.
Swiftly, Illumi assessed the situation. Other than the two powerful nen users at the summit, there were three people inside the house. He couldn't tell how strong the newcomer was—it was discerning how evidently impossible it was to tell with this particular subject—and this made him feel a little tense. He almost blew his cover but he wiped off any sort of reprimand he had directed to himself. He knew it would only make things worse.
She appeared at her balcony, the one she hung her laundry at. It was dark, and all he could see was her silhouette against the bright moon looking so large it was as if it was her friend.
Mito sat down on the rocking chair near the walls and sat there for some time, and for a while all he did was listen to the rustle of the leaves resonating visually with the rhythmic movements of her chair, the presence of the two people fighting easily pushed to the peripheral of his attention.
Slowly, the rocking slowed, and Illumi knew she fell asleep.
But at the feeling of the wind on his cheek, he frowned at this. She'd be ill.
This moment of peaceful blankness was interrupted by the door opening, this time revealing a light-haired man wearing an even lighter colored button-up. Illumi's eyes narrowed at him, and if the man turned slightly at an angle he'd have a better glimpse of his face. He looked familiar.
He only noticed he had some sort of fabric hanging on his arm when he was already standing beside Mito's chair and slowly covered her with it.
Mito opened her eyes—he could see it glisten under the moonlight—and smiled.
Whoever he was Illumi wanted him dead already.
…
"Illumi will be having a child."
Returning to the estate, Silva gave both his son (and grandfather) a blank look, because he was too shocked to react. As someone who simply did not get shocked, the default expression had always been blank.
Still, he mused, Illumi?
He almost palmed his face, sighing. Almost.
But he forced himself to calm down and pushed the inundating thoughts aside for pondering when he was left alone. "I do not see how this is going to convince me."
"Remind me again why you are keeping Killua here on a leash?"
"Because every generation must be lead by a silver head." Silva said firmly, eyes never leaving the much older Zoldyck but not quite looking at him (his mind was partly somewhere else). "It's common knowledge for our family since it begun hundreds of years ago."
"But what if Illumi's child is a silver head?"
Both Killua and Silva looked at him, wide-eyed, but Silva rarely changed his opinion about something—even if it did come from a parent. "If," corrected Silva, "And it's highly unlikely."
"But not impossible." Maha shrugged. "Besides, considering the threat the boy just did—" He paused to look at Killua, who flinched under his stare. "A very clever one," before turning his sights back to Silva. "I'm telling you that you have not much of a choice."
Silva opened his mouth for a retort, before Maha (someone who Silva was increasingly beginning to think was too bored to be reasoned with) cut him off nonchalantly. "I came to visit them, you know." He said, effectively making the other two freeze. "The child is a silver head. Oh," The old man paused to laugh at the startled expressions of the two.
"And the mother makes wonderful tea."
…
"Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it."
Those were the words Silva told his son some moments after Maha left them alone in room again. "And you did." He added firmly. "But when you didn't return like I did, you could say that I was woken up to the fact that I didn't know my son very well."
Killua wasn't expecting his father to open up…, but then his brain absorbed some words further and his eyes twitched a little. "Wait…," He said, "You mean you ran off as well?"
At his silence, Killua froze even more.
Seriously?
Killua partly hoped he just surmised differently, because he had enough shocks for a day, while another part was just awed—hopeful, even. And then Silva nodded, Killua wasn't sure what to feel about that—much less what he said as an afterthought. "With Ging Freecs."
Killua stared.
What?
"It was under pretty similar instances, only I was nineteen, and he was turning fourteen. He was an already established archaeological Hunter back then." He shrugged and when he didn't seem to go on telling stories, Killua decided to ask.
"Did you really want to go back?"
"It's in my blood. It's in yours." Silva stated without any hint of doubt. "But it's unfortunate you don't seem to have inherited the natural inclinations I had."
Killua couldn't compose of any sort of decent replies, so he didn't speak. Their cerulean orbs met for a moment, silence again occupying the space in-between.
"Ging and I travelled for the most part of that year." Silva said, and Killua swore he let out one small hint of a smirk. "Where did you think I learned all those Urban legends?"
Killua batted an eyelid at this, at the same time recalling the moments when he was a child—times where he would sit by his father in his cushions and he'd tell him those stories. In retrospect he always believed, since they were all about murder, that it was part of training his mentality. Apparently, his father was being partly sentimental.
"However…" Silva paused at this, and the stillness that followed was filled with tension and he was reminded of the air before Maha appeared. Killua soon realized it wasn't hostile, after all; it was filled with remorse. "There is one bigger consequence for my action."
Killua remained steady and quiet, waiting for his father to continue.
"Why do you think Alluka was cursed with such powers?" His father said with such certainty Killua would've believed him if he didn't know Alluka as well as he did. Passing memories of how everyone called Alluka as an object—a disruptive one—an 'it'.
"Do you want to subject one of your children into such a fate?"
Oh, like how he was basically subjecting Mito's child to a fate that was supposed to be his?
But Killua, before he went further into that line-of-thought, steeled himself against the all-too familiar feeling of guilt, remorse, and self-hate. He knew that he had been selfless enough for a boy his age. He didn't want to make any more sacrifices. He needed to be with Gon. If they can't live together, they would die alone.
He did not want to be alone, much less die as one.
And he definitely wouldn't leave his sister to remain a monster to the eyes of her own family.
"Alluka is not cursed." He said sternly, with a much more intense feel of certainty, trying to make his father understand through his sharp eyes. "She is gifted—blessed—and I feel sorry for you if you can't see that."
Silva didn't answer but he didn't seem to deny the claim, either. The older silver-head sighed and kept his face constant, unreadable, and somehow Killua doubted Silva truly understood what he meant.
Yet a part of him, the one that did not deny—delved into—his blood relation with this man, felt that Silva, despite all his stoic facades, made a leap of sorts.
Was it a leap of faith? Perhaps. Perhaps it wasn't. But it didn't matter anymore for Killua knew he had won.
"Very well," was all Silva said rather monotonously, before turning away from him. Killua felt a pang of guilt for disappointing his father, but he had had enough. "But before you go…"
It was then Silva stood up and went to the long table at one of the room's darker corners. He waved his hand and, as if by magic—albeit he knew it was a cloaking technique—a very familiar item appeared.
Killua's eyes lit up at what he saw.
It was Gon's Fishing rod.
BLOODWORTH MANSION
A couple of hours later
.
"WHAT?"
Somewhere in another time zone nearby, a certain Nerys Bloodsworth was very very close to acting her puerile self that she had barely even succeeded shedding off. "T-They're allowing Killua to back out?"
Her father raised his hand as if it would do anything to protect him from his daughter's wrath. "What do you think of the other sons?" He gulped. "Milluki?"
"What?!" yelled Nerys, aghast. "No way!"
Her father opened his mouth to make a counter offer before she cut him off with her increasingly louder and higher pitched hollers. "You promised you'll give me everything!" She paused to catch her breathing."I want Killua."
"Where would he be going, though?" Aaron asked from behind them. Her brothers were watching her boil. They could even be having fun. Bloody sadists.
Al shrugged in response to the youngest's question, while Atom smirked. "Probably with that Gon girl." He said, pretending not to look at Nerys (although judging by his expression all he lacked was a video camera). "She's a different sort of pretty than our sister over there—"
Atom was cut off by a wisp of something sharp passing a millimetre away from the tip of his beautiful nose. He only blinked at this and turned to its source (which he had no doubt was Nerys), but what met him was Aaron's half-amused and half-puzzled sigh, and blank air.
"…and she left."
Al, turning his head from the then-vacant space, looked at him for permission. "Should we help?"
Atom shook his head. "Remember the last time we did?"
A moment of silence passed as the three brothers remembered precisely what happened, and the humiliation that followed.
"She was wearing the maniac's face." Aaron helpfully supplied to break the silence, shrugging the embarrassment of being defeated so easily away. "The one she wears when she goes berserk?"
"Oh, yeah…"Al mumbled to himself, unconsciously remembering the last time they saw her like that. She killed five trained servants when their mom died. It was her very first massacre. Atom, on the other hand, only shrugged.
They'd be ready to fight when she finally got rid of her stubbornness to actually ask. But in the meantime, he decided to wave it off as some minor setback he could ignore.
Nerys can deal with this on her own, he said, she's a big girl now anyway.
.
Nerys stomped all the way to some other part of the estate (subsequently injuring a couple of servants along the way) when she felt a sudden appearance of presences surrounding her. She was frozen at the spotbecause there were intruders—how many are they?—and they were strong. Really strong. Judging by their concentrated aura, she had an inkling feeling she was barely a match for one of them.
—and what are they doing inside the estate?
"Hello, missy."
Her head robotically turned around the dark carpeted concourse, barely managing to get into a fighting position. "W-What is it?"
Slowly, the perpetrators appeared, one by one, and she soon realized that none of them were human. They were humanoids—incredibly weird-looking creatures—some similar to animals, while some to objects. But what truly caught her attention was that they were all emitting very powerful nen.
It was barely detectable outside their En sphere—they hid well—and that meant she was in this on her own. She doubted any one would get there in time before she lost her head. Every one of these creatures reeked of bloodlust.
"We've come here to thank daddy." One of them said, a creature with snake-like features, a hiss sound ending every two syllables or so. "But his ability seems to be to hide himself. Very well." He said with a mocking smirk. "We would really appreciate it if… you point us to where he is in this marvellous little labyrinth of a castle of yours?"
"What do you want with him?"
"He kind of killed off our employers, see."
"He was here the whole time!"
"He sent skilled assassins." Another odd-looking creature added (it was disgustingly gelatinous). "We'd like to repay the favour."
They said so as if she'd willingly give her father up. They weren't even threatening her life. And yet actually doing the opposite did not quite slip her mind.
"How'd you know it was my dad who sent them, then?" was all she asked.
"Unlike our predecessors, we don't just have slightly-above-average IQs." The snake-guy said with pride, even when the last words were hard to understand because of his accent. "We have our ways to figuring out who put up the bids to kill the Dons and us, if we interfere." "Lucky bastards were lucky that we weren't there."
"So you guys are strong?"
"We pride ourselves in being at least twice as strong as our predecessors."
Something in her head lit up at that, and the some of the injuus flinched a little at the sudden change of posture—from defensive to that of confidence. "Okay then," said Nerys, her eyes oozing with sadism, and sauntered so she was only a step away from the snake. "Rather than revenge, why not a job?" She asked.
"I'll pay double."
…
Inside his room, Killua held on to the rod with both his hands and stared at it for a while, smiling, and noted how hard it was to keep himself from laughing out-loud, out-of-nowhere, every 10 seconds.
This is really happening.
He can finally see Gon again without having to fear for her life.
Then there was a light-hearted laugh behind him. But he did not flinch, it was just his great-grandfather Maha. Like Silva, he had an inkling feeling that Maha was doing all of this more because he was bored, rather than because he sincerely cared (or maybe he was a bit guilty? Making up for his shortcomings in the past). In any case, there were very few things could amuse a person who had lived for so long.
"Ho-ho." He said. "You are looking quite bright, child."
Killua nodded with a smile, before turning away again to the bag resting on his room's floor. Then he remembered a question he wanted to ask his own father, but never did. "Maha-jii." He said, pausing, as he put his items to his bag. "I'm curious. How did grandpa Zeno take it?" He asked, a bit nervous. "…when dad ran?"
"Fine." Maha said. "Like your father, Zeno always believed Silva will return—it's in his blood." Blood sure meant many things to his family…
He also began to ponder about what it might've been like for the two friends—their fathers—to part. Did they grow apart? Or was something that happened abruptly as it did in theirs?
And then he remembered the repercussions of what he was doing—a habit of his since he lost Gon.
Gon. And then a wave of memories passed, memories and feelings he had to endure during the five years without her.
"A zenny for your thoughts?"
"I'm throwing the fate I didn't want to that child—just because he or she coincidentally was born in my family."
"Do not mistake coincidence for fate, child." Maha said surreptitiously, like he knew something. But Killua hadn't found it in himself to ask. Instead, he only stared at his great-grandfather who—as he always did—only gave out a light-hearted laugh. But then Maha stopped, and gave him a serious face Killua was simply not used to seeing.
"And do not forget child… that even after all these you are, still, a Zoldyck." He said, before cracking that usual smile of his. "Make us proud."
…
Their personal blimp arrived at the airport a couple of hours later. Killua couldn't help but grin as he watched it slowly reach the ground, holding Gon's rod tightly from excitement.
He turned to look at his sister, who was shielding her eyes from the dust flying around because of the airship. "Are you ready, Alluka?"
She turned to look at him and grinned. "Yes, onii-chan."
The two turned their heads back to the zeppelin when it made a light flopping sound, signalling it already touched the ground. As they walked to it, he found himself turning a bit at the people who were sending them off. There were the servants closest to them like Tsubone, Gotoh, and Canary.
Maha, Zeno, and even Silva were there as well. Kikyo was probably sulking in the Master's room again, but she was relatively calmer now that she was (finally) going to have a grandchild—someone she'd no doubt dress-up, regardless of gender.
They did not dare reveal where this grandchild was though, exactly. Illumi's cell being out-of-reach certainly helped.
And Killua knew very few places with no decent signal that his brother could be.
In any case, Killua gave them an appreciative nod, before getting into the blimp.
…
Alluka was running around the whole blimp laughing and he was reminded of how he and Gon played in the blimp during the hunter exam. So many images and moments with her were all so vivid. Through the years he had dreamed of them countless times, to the point they hardly seemed real—as if replaying certain images again and again lessened the fact that it was reality.
But there he was, then, going to Gon… and decidedly about to make more memories. And this time she'd be with him so the memories would be tangible and incontestable and real. And considering how much his blood was boiling—and how time actually ran fast (thank goodness) because of all the reminiscing—he could barely comprehend how it'd be like to see her again.
Obviously, he'd need to muster a bit of self-control. After all, Gon had no memories of him. He couldn't go running to her and kissing her senseless, no matter how much he wanted to.
And so…, when they arrived at the island a few days later, with Alluka still as full of energy as ever, he was a bit more composed than he hoped. It was probably over-compensating for his dilemmas, but he told himself it'd pass.
But he was ruefully reminded of one of his many troubles as soon as he jumped the blimp, Alluka on his arms, and feet landing to the ground—creating a small crater, much like Netero did a while back.
It was Illumi's presence at the dock, he felt it, and the older Zoldyck did not bother to hide it. He gently put Alluka down, and the younger ebony-hair only tilted her head in ponder at the sudden tension in the air.
"I knew you'd be here." Killua uttered out of nowhere, lying, because he was startled. Not only had he forgotten about his troubles in general, Killua simply didn't expect Illumi to stay in the island for days. He did have his own set of airships.
"Here to break the deal, little brother?"
Killua drew out his breath to speak, but stopped himself, before exhaling and finally giving his brother a response. "Dad let me go."
The silence that followed was expected. Killua could almost read his brother's thoughts. He had to admit it was something that rarely happened, and a sense of confidence that came along with it was welcome.
After five years of regaining a leash on him, their father suddenly let him go? Illumi turned to Alluka, then. And with 'it'?
Preposterous.
I don't believe you, Illumi's expression (if one could call it that) told Killua. But, as always, Illumi never found the extra energy to do verbal arguments. He just let it pass, probably going to Silva himself, and proceed on killing everyone involved if he found out he was lying.
"I have no business here, then," was all the oldest sibling said before turning to leave. But as the frigid Illumi passed Killua and Alluka, Killua voiced out a question bugging him for a while.
"Is there a reason to be watching her from afar so often?"
"Brother," Illumi uttered out without turning to face him. "I thought it was already understood I watch her to keep an eye out on you."
"You got close to get information on Gon." He paused. "That and I'm guessing you were just there." Although…, Killua knew he was here a lot longer than that…
"Tell me honestly, aniki." He said, turning his head to face his brother who did not do the same. Killua's sharp eyes however registered Illumi was stiffer than usual. "Do you have feelings for Mito?"
"My family will always be my priority," said Illumi as if it explained everything. And almost too quickly; as if he stiffened because he knew this question was coming, and had been formulating an answer since then.
But they are your family, too, Killua wanted to say but he kept his mouth shut. Somehow it felt wrong to tell him his predicament—an undeserved blessing, perhaps?—using mere words neither of them truly even use by default.
"And yet she is important to you."
"Important to keep an eye on you." Illumi snapped back. "Oh. And did you know?" Illumi said, and Killua had the sinking feeling he'd be changing the topic.
And he was right, as proven by his brother's pointing his head to the sea. There were three boats already near the horizon. "Gon got in there several minutes ago."
Killua's eyes widened, but knowing this dilemma with his brother was something he could not put off, he turned his head back to his brother, albeit the rest of his body (and spirit) was already eager to (quite literally) fly to Gon.
"So you know, Aniki." He paused, barely managing to keep his head directed at his brother. "I suggest you go talk to Mito about her stomach."
…
Illumi disappeared soon after that, although he went to a different direction from the apex, obviously disliking the idea of showing weakness (curiosity) to his brother. Killua also mused that it was mostly reflex, however, because no doubt Illumi was beginning to dawn at that one fact that would change all their lives.
Killua looked at the horizon with longing. So close, so close—
Where could she be going? Killua asked himself as he looked alternatively amongst the three ways boats go from there. South to the continent's mainland, West to the land of the Slumbering sun, or North where the wind was coming from.
How would he know which one she was in?
He dared not be too hopeful—to think she'd be coming for him—although that would've been so much like Gon.
But more importantly: What was the fastest way he could get to her?
Then he felt a gentle tug on his shirt and, slowly (and rather absent-mindedly), his head tilted down to his side to meet his little sister's large dark-colored orbs.
"Onii-chan…?" She said sweetly. "Can I have a hug?"
He blinked at the request and slowly did as he was asked.
And… even more slowly—the answer to his question finally dawned to him.
Oh.
