I'm sooo sorry for taking ages! You vocal angels deserve weekly updates, you really do, but things are still happening. *sobs* I'm trying not to exceed 2 weeks tho! Hope that's quick enough. :D
And I hope some of the vocal readers would stop disappearing on me! Yes. That would be super awesome.
A/N: For those wondering... Alluka cannot heal herself (atl not in this story). And even if she could, she'd have no more energy to teleport, trapping them there with the injus. So Killua opted to put faith in Leorio.
WARNING! Don't expect too much fluff. I will take the whole GonxKillua thing a bit slowly. They have been apart for 5 years, and a lot happened since then. Fellow shippers…, I can only ask for your patience. Lol. (Well okay, I admit the next chap wouldn't be so slow). huehue
Disclaimer: I wish I own Hunter x Hunter.

CHAPTER 18: Shed x Convergence x Medicine
The trip to the airport avoided being awkward only because Bansho, Kurapika, and Senritsu came to see them off. The car trip composed of trivial conversations, not that Killua actually absorbed any of the topics.
His face always faced the window, chin rested on his knuckles, and he pretended to look at the passing motions of the scenery outside—giving occasional nods or pseudo-answers when questions were directed at him, and he hoped the questions were only answered with yes and no.
In the end, however, his eyes were inconspicuously focused on Gon: on her face, how much it matured, how her face still carried the most beautiful shade of red when she's emotional. And also how certain things remained the same—how her face brightened almost too often, how huge her eyes were, how perennially dilated her pupils were, and that same contagious smile…
"We're here."
Eventually (not that Killua caught the time) the group arrived at the airport and he was once again reminded of the moment they parted ways with Leorio and Kurapika, just before they ended up in the Heaven's Arena. It brought about a bittersweet feeling and, giving out a wry smile, he found his eyes gravitating towards Gon again.
It was then he noticed Kurapika's face contorting like he just remembered something and he grabbed Gon's arm to pull her closer. He blushed a bit—that Killua saw, but Gon was facing away then so he couldn't (and he'd rather not) say the same. He felt a huge tinge of annoyance at the fact that Kurapika could touch her, while he was too terrified to try.
When he saw Gon's posture weakening, he knew Kurapika told her something dire. And then when he saw Gon's face, Killua's gut fell. She was pale.
Yet he couldn't quite bring himself to ask.
They both entered the blimp without a lot of words, other than the occasional 'where to?" until they reached their respective rooms to rest. What was he supposed to say—especially when the last time they parted was when he told her they could never see each other again?
An hour of rolling around his bed—unable to sleep—later. He sat up and the next thing he knew he was already in front of her door, hands raised, and ready to knock. He stopped himself literally a millimetre from the door surface.
But realized just how much he wanted to speak with her, and he mustered courage and raised his hand again. But then he figured he didn't exactly know what to say so, reluctantly, his raised hand once again succumbed to gravity.
He was about to turn around when the door opened all of a sudden, making them both flinch.
"O-Oh! Killua." Gon said after a light gasp. "I… was just about to go to your room."
Eh?
He watched her closely as she scratched the back of her neck—at the time red from embarrassment. "Want to go explore the ship with me?"
…
The adventure they had was a pleasurable de ja vu of their first—the one during the hunter exam, the time wherein they explored, laughed, played, and made promises that they both ought to remember for the rest of their lives. They even ended up in a corridor as well, staring at the circular window.
It was fun—it was. But he couldn't deny the fact that he was still a little sad. The Gon he knew, the Gon from before, didn't hold back like how she asked him to explore—she didn't have to.
But looking at her, and meeting her bright auburn orbs. He thought it was time to begin moving forward again.
"Zenny for your thoughts?"
"I told you about my family in a thousand miles above the sea once." He smirked, and relished their current proximity. "Also in a blimp."
"Tell me again then." She said, eyes wide and body leaning towards him, posture asking him to tell her more.
Killua stared at her and smiled, happy that she was comfortable enough with him again. At least little by little. "We were assassins, you already know that. Or at least you did." He said, trying to put in some humor to their predicament. "I told you how many planes we had, and that all of the family are murderers."
"Hmn…" She hummed, looking down. Gon seemed apprehensive.
"What is it?"
She looked up to him again at the sound of his voice. She was frowning this time. She was guilty. "I'm sorry I can't remember."
He shook his head. "You don't have to. At least not yet." It was true that he had been wishing for the old times, but it was time to shed the walls the years created. But was there truly a wall? She didn't even remember about them.
What they needed to do was to rebuild the bridge.
"But before I tell you all about five years ago… tell me what Kurapika—" He cleared his throat. "What Kurapika told you before we left."
And she was pale again.
Darn it
His hand moved on its own to cover hers. They were cold and shaking, and he held on to them firmly. Killua decided to wait, for as long as she needed.
"My old friends—I think they're ours." She began some moments later, their hands still touching. "Zushi and Wing. Do you know them?"
"Yes." He recalled what Illumi said five years prior during the attack. It was blurry. The most vivid image at the time was Gon's lifeless face.
"Wing-san's dead, Zushi's in a coma."
He stared at her, still a bit shaken at the sudden passing of Gon's lifeless face again. He shook it away, and nodded grimly. He already knew this from Kurapika, but the sting wouldn't disappear for a long, long, time. "We'll visit them," said Killua. "After we send the medicine to Leorio."
Her eyes stayed focused on him for a while, before it finally slid down to their hands. He could feel even more heat crept up his face (only with Gon that was even possible) and took his hand away. "They were a huge part of our friendship, you know."
"I know."
She stared at him for a while, it made him melt. "Killua?" She asked, and he didn't take away his eyes as he waited for her to speak. "Tell me more."
Ha. He huffed inside his head. Where to start?
As he began to speak, his hand would make occasional gestures from storytelling. How long had it been since he was filled with so much energy to speak?
He began with how they met (definitely not forgetting the little details of all of Leorio's embarrassments), how they got through the Hunter Exam together, how she and the others went out of their way to rescue him, to Heaven's Arena (where, he wasn't able to add, they had their first kiss)…
But alas, the fond memory made him recall the two very important people they met there. Two people whose lives were ruined simply because they knew him.
Killua once again shook away his thoughts.
"Do they always do that?"
He blinked at the sudden scrutiny. "What?"
"Your eyes." She said, looking straight at them. He wondered when he'd stop shivering under it (due to anxiety or pleasure, there was rarely a difference with her). "They're dilated lately, but then occasionally they're constricted. Really constricted."
He didn't speak.
"What comes to your mind?"
A pause. Then he looked away, to the carpet, and his hands twiddling as if they'd keep his nerves in check. "Things." He whispered, head tilting up a bit as he stared at the ceiling. He couldn't keep still.
"Things that make you feel sad?"
"Hmn." He said and gave her a rueful smile, followed by a self-pitying chuckle. "And mad. Guilty. And pretty much everything negative."
Gon opened her mouth to say something but he cleared his throat to cut her off, and he was eager to change the topic. He knew Gon would know what to say, but there was a deep rooted fear in him—that if he forgot or moved on from all this guilt…
Something would happen to remind him of it.
"The quest for your father continues—and then we find this game…" He shifted to Greed Island and the adventures they had in the place. But despite the fact that his efforts were so obvious, Gon didn't say a word and went along with him. He appreciated that.
It was around that part of the story where he remembered about his 'gift'. "I'm sorry about your rod."
"Eh?"
"I was going to bring it to you." He said. "But it got lost at sea."
She didn't say anything for a couple of seconds, trying to absorb the new unexpected fact. "It's fine." She finally said several moments later. "I can wield new weapons anyway."
An amused eyebrow was raised. "Oh?"
"I can use staff and bows now." She grinned back, and for a moment there the atmosphere was as light as it used to. But he must've have shown her an expression that drained that as quickly as it came.
"You know it was no wonder something felt…missing." She said, and chuckled. "You have been such an integral part of my life, huh?"
Killua could only gape in response. Gon sighed. "I wish I can remember."
It felt like something was forming in his throat, rendering him unable to speak for a while. It wasn't bile however, it was quite the opposite. "It's okay—" He breathed out after a moment. "You don't have to remember."
"What do you mean?"
"I thought we could make new ones."
She smiled. A sudden electricity coursed through his veins—an even stronger desire to touch her—but he did not dare ruin this moment by doing something impulsive. He stood up involuntarily, masking the spontaneity of his actions by stretching out his arms.
"W-Wanna go to the balcony?"
Gon only blinked (probably thinking how weird he was) before nodding, and they went on their way.
Cold gusts of winds greeted them the moment they opened the steel door. It wasn't particularly strong however, at least not to them (Their hair were having a hard time.) "Let's continue talking." He blurted out with a smile as he watched her comb out the strings of hair that slapped her face.
He was almost scared she'd ask how she lost her memories, because then he'd have to think of euphemisms—otherwise he'd be shaking in fear, himself. "The five years that followed…" She began and something shifted in the aura enveloping him.
"What's your nen type?" Gon asked as she used Gyo. "Transmuter?"
He nodded, quickly composing himself. "All silver heads in the family are transmuters—the only transmuters, actually."
"Really?" "That's interesting."
Pushing away the sudden images of his suffering when she was gone, he suddenly wanted to tell her about the three main techniques he learned not too long after they separated: Lightning Palm, Thunderbolt, and Godspeed. He did, but only briefly, he wanted to impress her in actual battle. Then he recalled he gained those abilities while on missions to kill people. His opponents weren't powerful, but Killua couldn't be stagnant to retain the bits of sanity he had left.
Anyone would rather do something than sleep while they're in pain… moments where one would be helpless, every molecule attending that ache.
"What have you done? Where did you stay?" He asked, deciding to himself he'd rather shift the focus of the conversation.
"With Ging, in the Dark Continent." She said with a nostalgic smile, taking her card from one of her coat's many hidden pockets. (once again he silently thanked her for not pointing out his sudden change of expression). "Our licenses doesn't mean much there tho, unless you meet people from here."
Gingerly, he took the card for a closer look. One of his eyebrows raised at what he saw. "You're a star Hunter now?"
"Well, Ging is a Two star hunter… well three now, I think." She shrugged, then touching her card again. "He's kind of my mentor and we did lots of stuff in the continent."
For a while they continued to chat, mostly about him and Alluka. Hers were certainly more exciting.
Once upon a time, he had been part of those memories…
The conversations ended naturally, with Gon's stomach grumbling. And they grinned, striding towards the canteen together.
In the end, neither mentioned about being a couple. She didn't ask about his fiancé, and he didn't ask what the stares between her and Kurapika were about.
Still, they were moving forward. It was all Killua dared ask for.
…
Gon and Killua arrived at the foot of Aui Mountain a little over two days later. It was a cold and long walk and Killua had to go look for high places to call Leorio to check up on Alluka. She had over a week left, so there wasn't any rush (not that the knowledge calmed him down). But she wouldn't be gaining consciousness any time soon.
By dusk, they arrived at a small farming village. Interestingly, along with younger ones, old women were farming. It seemed only women were there, actually. The only males they've seen among over a score of women were 2 boys, no more than ten years of age.
And judging by the looks they were getting…, these people rarely had visitors too.
Gon approached the nearest woman, a woman around 80 years of age, but was healthy enough to still be tilling the rich-looking soil. "Is there a place to stay?" She asked, gaining the woman's full attention. "We'll pay."
"Oh hush, children." The old woman smiled as she nonchalantly held up her rake, which in turn got the full attention of a woman around half her age. "Be our guests."
"Riri-baasan—" The other woman intervened, taking a step towards them. "There's a flu going about and most of the houses have infected people."
Apparently, everyone passing by being treated as guests wasn't the issue.
"Flu?"
"Yes. It isn't rare around this time of year, and it passes after the raining season." "It sure does hinder the village productivity though." The older woman grinned and held her rake straight and stood proudly to make her point.
The younger woman shook her head and her back slumped in defeat, and then dragged herself back to the work she left. But then the old woman ended her musings and voiced out another opetion: "I guess you can stay with Rui and Reina."
"Eh?" The younger one stopped her tracks. "But they—" She stopped herself to anxiously whisper something into the other's ears. But the two very much heard every word of it. "Wouldn't they be… scared?"
Gon and Killua looked at each other. "We'll be fine with whoever you put us with." Gon said making the women twitch in surprise. "We aren't hunters for nothing, ma'am."
"Oh, you're hunters?" "My, you're so young!" "Well, then I'm sure they can handle little Reina." The old woman laughed then, and the younger once again sighed in defeat.
…
They arrived at Rui and Reina's threshold a couple of minutes later.
"Rui, Reina?" The old woman chimed, still holding her rake. "We have guests! Can they stay with you?"
Killua was a bit startled by how straight-to-the-point the woman was, but that perhaps that was probably because everyone was so close. Formalities were unneeded.
He and Gon used to be like that.
A couple of moments passed before a woman with reddish hair appeared. The moment they saw her she was already assessing the two of them. It wasn't guarded, but it was very curious, and then she smiled. "Okay." She said, looking at them both. At the time they were already getting used to how quickly these people agreed to do favours. "But don't expect too much for the accommodations though."
When the old woman nodded for them to come in, they did. Gon thanked her, the old woman said she shouldn't do so yet, and as she waved away the textile curtain (a threshold of sorts) she greeted another one of their host. "Sorry for intruding—"
Killua's eyebrow raised at her sudden stop and unconsciously followed her line of sight. He realized he was speechless too, for a few seconds. "Whoa." What is that? He asked himself, too speechless. A giant ant?
Gon tried to be gracious, she really did, but she gaped at Killua at the reaction. The first time she met him he was incredibly cold, and that image didn't quite change for a while until their trip. She had seen him energetic during his stories, and each time made her swell.
She realized she would love to see him laugh out loud.
"My name is Shidore... or Reina. Reina's my human name." The ant said, interrupting her thoughts. Gon bowed as the giant ant did, and she turned her head to see Killua was still rudely staring so she put her hand to the back of his head and got him to join her bow.
"It can talk?!" They were just lifting their head when he reacted. The unusual increase of pitch in his voice really made her want to laugh.
And she did. "She's a chimeara ant." She explained, staring at him. "They're found in the Dark Continent. They gain the characteristics of the creatures they eat." "The humans there lived far enough to their habitat so I haven't met one that was a human before…"
"You mean Kurt also—"
"She came to us herself, alone." Rui said to cut her off, a flash of pain obvious in her features. "We never found her brother, Kurt."
"People who love each other always find a way to be together again." Killua said deeply, Gon stared at him. Killua caught this and blushed furiously before turning away. He even scratched the back of his nose in nervousness. "At least that's what I heard."
Gon let out a giggle before, as images of Dark Continent ants passing through her head, she grabbed the girl's hard keratin hands.
"I'm sure your brother will turn out soon."
…
Hachoo!
"I didn't know you can sneeze, Colt!" Stick Dinner yelled as he grasped the yacht's metal raining in glee. Colt flew lower to show him his raised eyebrow of mockery.
"Five years together and you didn't know? Really?"
"Stick's not really the most observant one of us." Banana Kavaro grinned as she walked to stand before Stick. "Anyway—Off to the mainland! I'm so excited."
Excited to take the exam that was.
They were lucky that the Hunter Exams would be held twice a year indefinitely. There had been no passes the previous exam and the association needed more man power, particularly due to the reconnaissance missions to the Dark Continent.
"A lot of people die in the exam." Podungo Lapoy mentioned as a matter-of-factly, as if disagreeing with Banana's enthusiasm, but no such fear was found.
"Yeah, Stick's alive." Banana said pretty confidently, nudging Stick in the process. "That must mean something."
"You underestimate me."
Banana only grinned and turned to look at the rest of her party. "Monta, Lin, and Spinner also passed!" And she lifted her head. "Even Colt."
Lin said and Monta smiled in assent. They passed two years prior with Colt. Spinner and Dinner passed the previous one.
"Colt's the strongest." Lin added, remembering the exam days. "He's a chimeara ant."
"I can imagine how the other examinees looked at him. Pfft—" Dinner tilted is head up to look at Colt, only to realize that Colt was flying at a constant pace and staring into the horizon… again. The humanoid was in a daze again. Dinner shook his head.
"Aaand he's gone."
…
.
"Why are you staring at me like that?"
"I just like watching you so energetic."
"Seriously?" "Oi—"
"Kids! Dinner's ready!"
"Itaaadaaaakimaaaasu!"
"OI."
…
It was only an hour before Rui's strict bed time that they discussed Killua and Gon's purpose there in the first place. "We're headed towards the summit."
"Eh?"
"What is it?"
"You have to get past a gorge there." Shidore said with a worried tone. "It's rainy season remember?" She said and looked out the pouring rain outside to make her point. Flash floods were incredibly dangerous. And the rain hadn't stopped since it started several minutes after they arrived. "Why would you want to go there?" Then she slumped a bit, her shy side overbearing. "If you want to tell me, that is."
"We have to get a plant…" Killua answered as he took out the paper Leorio gave him. It had the name, description, and surprisingly good drawing of it. "This one. The Yumho plant."
"Oh that can be found in our garden!"
.
.
"Eh?"
Gon and Killua stared at each other, surprised, while Shidore continued speaking. "Yeah. A woman once gave us this plant." Rui smiled at this, obviously having fond memories of the said woman. "Says it sells huge in the mainstream market."
"Geru?"
"Yeah that's her!" The humanoid chirped. "She's very pretty." "She actually asked us to put on signs not to disturb her as favour. She wanted solitude, it seems."
"She's pregnant."
Rui smirked. "That explains everything."
…
The plant, apparently, only bloomed when the sky wasn't so overcast (and certainly not during the night). Gon predicted the rain wouldn't stop for a couple of more hours so they decided, albeit a bit begrudgingly, that they'd still need to stay the night. It had been the plan, but it was very difficult to stay still now that it was so close.
He lied there on the floor, having a thin mat made from local dried plants separating him from the cold stone floor. It didn't really bother him of course, he'd slept through worse. What was making him flinch was Gon's stare—no matter how curious and innocent they probably were.
He was pretending to sleep while she, sleeping on a similar mat beside his, was staring at him.
It made him want to pull her to him and kiss her senseless.
He shook away the thoughts.
"Can't sleep?"
He opened his eyes then, realizing his pretence wasn't working, and turned his head to look at her. "Does looking at my face help you?"
She blushed a bit but she didn't look away. She even turned to face him, supporting her weight with an arm. "This feels familiar." She said, making him gape in the process. "I've been trying to imagine."
"Imagine what?"
"How it feels like to understand that this proximity is natural."
"They say you tend to know a person better if you know his or her weaknesses." Killua quickly said, saying the first thing to discuss that came to mind. "Yours is naivety. And blind optimism."
She smiled and relaxed to face the ceiling again. "I still have that. But I'm sure I improved." She said, and Killua could almost see her eyelids moving slower by the second.
"Let me guess what's yours." He raised an eyebrow at that. Other than you? "You are too quick to give up, too cautious."
He looked at her with a slacked jaw. "How do you even know that?"
"I learn things." A long pause as she stared at him, and she cracked a grin. "I'm kidding, Bisuke told me."
He grinned back, but inside he felt anxious, his fist clenching involuntarily was proof of that. Why would Bisuke say that? Unless Bisuke felt it was necessary for Gon to know how to escape him.
Killua forced his mind blank then, telling himself there was no reason to be overtly-sensitive about it. He couldn't just go ahead and activate a catalyst—and expect every single element changed. That took time.
"I've told you the things I have done." He whispered, but he knew Gon heard. "Do you still trust me?"
There was a pause, and for a second it had him worried. "Ging once told me… that you give faith to the people you love and respect." She said and all of a sudden he could feel her stare again. "But the people who deserve it—the ones who pull through even when you don't love them enough.
"I didn't remember you—I still don't. Yet you left everything anyway," said Gon rather slowly, and grinned.
"So yeah," "I trust you."
Killua grinned back, a genuine one this time.
For now, that trust was enough. Everything good almost always began there.
Killua found that it wasn't so hard to sleep after that.
…
The next day he woke up feeling particularly fresh, despite sleeping at such a hard surface. The first thing they did was get the plant and took a few extra.
Killua didn't expect Gon to make an unusual call though. A whistle, one he remembered hearing in the blimp a few times a day. He didn't make much of it though, until now.
Gon whistled again, her eyes fixed at a portion of the sky. He didn't ask, but his sights didn't leave what she was staring at. Then soon, a point became a line, and he realized it was a silhouette.
A bird.
A pretty big one.
"Send this to Kurapika please, Momo." She said and gave the bird some sort of treat that looked suspiciously like raw fish. (Where'd she get that anyway?) "And don't eat it okay?"
The bird crooned and dutifully flew off to a direction obviously leading to Kurapika.
Kurapika.
Of course he had an idea why it was sent to Kurapika, rather than Leorio.
His jaw clenched at an image of them exchanging bird mail, but he didn't say anything. It was him with Gon now, not Kurapika. "Well…" Killua huffed out. "That went quicker than we expected."
Gon nodded with a bright smile, before staring at him for a long while, and her expression dimmed a bit.
"What is it?"
"I want to go see Zushi." She said, and his heart skipped a beat. "Want to come with me?"
They planned on going there after this mission…, but he wasn't ready for it to be this soon. And why suddenly give him a choice?
Was he still so transparent to her?
"Killua?"
Zushi. The sweet boy they were both fond of. A boy whose future he (and his brother) destroyed. It'd be ironic if she were to remember her sufferings by looking at Zushi, as unlikely that would've been. But seeing an old friend wasn't something he could deny her, or himself.
He realized it was something he will have to face.
So he turned his head to her and gave her a firm nod. "Of course."
