WINTER BREAK IS HERE! Finally. Sorry I took a month (well, almost), but we all know how the final weeks of semesters can go. Granted, the load this sem is infinitely lighter than last year (I was literally dying then), it still has been murderous.
In any case, it's VACATION TIME! Wohoo. That means that, granted vocal readers stop disappearing on me (again) I'll probably be able to update weekly like the old times. Silent readers evolving to vocal ones would seriously be great, too!
Enjoy~

CHAPTER 19: Healed x Broken x Wish
Nerys Bloodsworth relished the pleasurable feeling of rose-scented lukewarm water coating her skin. Relaxing into the porcelain bathtub, she covered her face with a fragrant towel, somewhat increasing the soothing sensation on her skin.
Then her phone rang—effectively cutting the moment short—making her flinch enough so that her towel splashed into the water, and she cursed in response. Her hand moved to the closest dry cloth and dried herself, gripping her phone a bit too tight in annoyance a second later. But then she saw the caller ID and her grip loosed a bit. It was one of the two injus closest to the island.
Breathing in, she spoke through to speaker. "Is it done?"
"They got away—sss."
And as if she wasn't already on the verge of instantaneous simmering, the blasted inju gave her even more bad news. "It's been three days. We don't know where they are."
"You waited three days to tell me this?"
"The girl got our boat—sss. Our phones got wet and we were stuck on a small isla—"
Excuses. But she exhaled some of the stress away, making her sound calmer than she actually was. "Two of the infamous new generation of Injus—" She paused to dwell on the irony of it all. "—bested by a little girl."
"Don't you dare speak as if you know what happened—sss." Came a quick and very annoyed response. For a moment there, Nerys thought it'd turn into a shouting match. Then she heard another hiss and knew the snake was actually a lot less hot-headed than she expected him to be. "She got help." He said. "A silver headed boy and a long-haired girl."
Her eyes widened and she almost dropped her phone into the tub. She remained silent, simply because she couldn't utter a word. She could barely hear the inju through the loud beating of her chest. In any case, the inju apparently thought it was time to continue speaking.
"It was weird—the other girl had an ability, I think." Static from breathing interrupted the line for a second. "They got teleported away." Nerys blinked in response. She heard only trouble regarding Alluka—it must've been her—but teleportation?
"A-Any idea where to?" She asked and realized the injus probably didn't know, otherwise they wouldn't be having this conversation. "What did the silver-head say before they disappeared?"
"Rorio." He hissed, breathed out, and corrected himself. "Leyoro—sss" He grunted in annoyance. Snakes apparently have bad hearing. "A name."
"I know him."
"Oh?"
"Somewhat." She said, standing up on the bathtub and gingerly getting out from it, wrapping the cotton towel around her soaked skin. Feeling the sharp coldness of the marble tile, she tilted her head back up—a plan forming in her head. "How many Injus are available?"
"None."
"What?"
Did she really just hear that?
"Word of advice to a rich beautiful young lady because I'm a man—hisss." She scoffed sarcastically. Because poison was a "man's" weapon.
"We have enough money to not take another job, but we like money so we take them anyway—hss. However," By that time, Nerys' eyes were already twitching in annoyance. "We'd rather not dwell on teenager's failed love affairs."
She ignored the small powder from her phone falling to the marble floor. "What are you trying to say?"
"You better straighten your motivations if you want anyone fighting for you."
…
The silence en route to the hospital was covered with heavy rain, but it was nevertheless filled by an especially garrulous Gon, with topics pertaining to a moiety of the pair they first learned Nen with.
It wasn't that they weren't tense for the grand reunion—it was the opposite—but remembering Zushi before they saw him now was a way to remember him before all this happened, something they agreed on ironically without words. It was an image both of them wanted to refresh, and ensure would stay in their heads for a long time—no matter what they would see.
It was in YorkShin's most renowned hospital where Zushi was being taken care of. A state-of-the-art treatment, with a strong generator, they said, so they didn't have to worry about the strong winds then attacking the region. Apparently, Wing had put on some sort of insurance on him using his own money.
Using their cards, and being well-known associates of Wing and Zushi from the Arena, they reached outside his door without a hitch. However, Killua paused outside the steel door that separated him from the younger boy. Gon's hand was opening the door midway but, sensing Killua's reluctance to move, she paused and looked back. "What's wrong?"
"It's my fault you know." Was all he said for a while, and Gon waited patiently for him to continue. "Illumi killed Wing to get information on us."
Killua didn't know what to expect her reaction would be. It certainly wasn't a passive stare, piercing through him like it always did. "Then it is also my fault."
"Gon—"
His words faded as she continued to push the door open and stepped in front of him. "I may no longer remember exactly how you two became friends—but I know a love for a friend when I see one." She said, her back facing him. "Don't punish yourself. None of us would want that."
Killua couldn't say a thing—all the way from outside the door with Gon's hand encouragingly over his, to Zushi's bedside. He gave a quick survey of the room, a habit of his since he was four. It was around fifteen square meters, a little large for a small boy even with all the equipment at the periphery of his bedside, keeping him breathing. There were also a couple of illuminated boards that showed x-rays and scans of the brain, incessant reminders to the doctors coming in of Zushi's hopeless condition.
He was suddenly reminded of how deeply Illumi's needle was inside Gon's hippocampus—one of the deepest sections of the brain. His was on the primary motor complex, he mused a distant research with slight distaste, a part that extended to the peripheries of his brain. He couldn't risk taking it out by himself or even with her help.
In any case, he would've been picturing something in Gon's brain that wasn't supposed to be there for a lot longer a time—if only the high-pitched beeps of the machine did not take his attention.
Zushi was well-reaching fifteen now, but he looked no older than twelve, and he was thin... his body preserving all that it could. Killua remembered that horrid dream he had that began so nicely. Zushi was still the young 10 year old he met. That was still him, mentally. He would be weirded out by the sudden teenager status.
If he woke up at all.
He was pulled out of another dark trance by a sudden increase in pressure on his palm. Gon held his hand tighter. "He'll wake up."
"Alluka will help him." He nodded with certainty. As she will help you. The sureness in his eyes made Gon's widen a bit.
"She could heal him?" She uttered in awe. "She has an amazing gift, Killua."
"But my whole family thinks she's cursed."
"Well the family that matters, don't." She smiled, and it was very contagious. "See? You're being a good friend, already."
He held her hand tighter.
For a while they were peacefully quiet, the sound of the machines and of Zushi's breathing were the only sound they heard for a while.
However, in the two hours that passed since they arrived, Killua visibly became more and more agitated. He couldn't stay in the same room—the hospital room smelling so much like perfumed death—and with Zushi, a constant reminder of what had to be lost for his happiness, for so long.
Finally, he stepped out and was followed by Gon to the corridor outside.
"Ne… Killua." She said, turning her head to him. Killua dared not look back. He didn't want to be reminded that their hands were no longer intertwined—because his hand got sweaty and he instinctively pulled it away. Blasted sweat glands. "Killua?"
"Hmn?"
"You're emitting really dark aura." She said pointedly, but somehow it never offended him. "You might be affecting Zushi inside."
"Oh. Sorry." He shrugged with a frown, before turning his head a bit to her. She was staring at him, making him flinch. "What?"
"We should spar."
…
NOSTRADE MANSION
Senritsu and Kurapika watched as Alluka was treated by Leorio using the newly-arrived herb. It came earlier than they anticipated, and it made the mood around the house that much lighter. However, through the moments, Senritsu couldn't help but steal glances of Kurapika.
"Are you worried?" She asked almost diffidently and retained her focus on the doctor-patient pair not too far in front of her. "About Gon and Killua, I mean."
"They're strong," was all he said, similarly without looking at her. At this, Senritsu sighed.
"I mean them being alone together."
Kurapika did not answer but Senritsu closed her eyes. He turned his head slightly to catch a glimpse of her expression and knew that she was listening to his heartbeat.
And he wasn't sure if it was a look of sadness or pity.
"She's fine now." Leorio said with a huff, pulling their attentions back to him. "She'll wake in a few hours." He said. "I'll call Killua."
A few hours indeed passed by and, just as Leorio predicted, Alluka's heartbeat became normal and stable—signalling that she'd be awake very soon. Unfortunately, Leorio couldn't get a hold of Gon and Killua. Something about a strong storm in that region.
And there he thought his Beetle phone 9.0 could get through anything.
Regardless, the little Senritsu was casually walking to the office with a new bowl of cold water on her arms, water to wipe Alluka with. She placed the bowl onto her arm to open one of the room's double doors. But as she opened the door, she sensed a slight fluctuation of heart beat and she knew immediately that young Zoldyck had woken.
"Hello, Alluka-chan." Senritsu said in her usual soothing way as soon as she caught sight of Alluka's figure. She put the bowl at the coffee table and gently placed her palm on the younger one's face. "Are you feeling better now?"
Alluka nodded, and slowly surveyed her surroundings. "Where's nii-san?"
"They went to get the plant you needed to get healed." Senritsu said, gesturing to the leaf left on the table. The plant was put in live in a pot, Leorio thought it could be useful someday. "They asked to call them as soon as you wake." She said with a smile and turned her head to look at Leorio, who fell asleep at the couch. "Shall I inform Leorio now?"
Alluka shook her head. "I'm aware that he had been awake for a long time. I want him to rest for a little longer." She said. "My brother needs some time with Gon-chan anyway."
Senritsu let out a soft laugh. "You're a sweet child, Alluka."Alluka grinned in response, but then her smile became one of curiosity. How long had it been since she had been away from her brother, and alone with a stranger?
Senritsu returned Alluka's curious stare before she stood up, patting the fabric of her dress straight. "You should eat." She said, but did not wait for the girl to reply before getting her something to eat.
Alluka relished every bite of the meat and vegetable and she couldn't help but chuckle at how adorable the younger one was. The musician watched Alluka until she finished her third serving, and the younger made a satisfied groan before turning to look at Senritsu with the same look of curiosity she had when she woke up.
Tilting her head, Alluka asked: "What's your name, nee-san?"
"Senritsu."
"Senritsu-neesan…" Alluka paused, feeling something dawning at the back of her mind. She continued speaking without realizing that a certain instinct was taking over. "Play the flute for me."
Senritsu blinked at the sudden request but didn't think much of it. Until, after listening to her play, Alluka requested another favour.
"You play amazingly." Alluka said. "Tell me a story."
Oh dear.
At this, Senritsu's instincts were telling her something very important. And that she should be very worried.
The fact that Alluka's heartbeat was at an odd rate ever since she began asking for favors added to that nervousness. It sounded stable, but it was slow, and it felt like the sound of her heart was something tangible and viscous. Senritsu rummaged her head for Killua's explanation of his sibling's abilities. Senritsu willed herself to calm. She'd just have to ask for something simple. So she proceeded to think of a story that might interest the Zoldyck.
Oddly, the first that came to mind was a tragic story she had known since she was, well, Alluka's age. She never forgot of it, it actually held deep meaning to her, and for some reason it was the story Senritsu wanted to relive.
"Well, this is an old folklore from my homeland." She said and Alluka lifted her feet so she could rest her chin on them but still her thick heartbeat remained the same. "It is about a young man, a newly wed, who was one of the men sent to the mountains to kill a beast—a bear, in most versions—that had been plaguing the village.
"It had been a brutal week for the hunters. A few died falling off the cliff, and majority died fighting against the unusually large beast." Senritsu recalled that the details of their deaths varied with the adult telling the story. She opted for the least gruesome ones. "The man was the only survivor, being a man of incredibly low presence, but he didn't want to go home a dissenter, especially not when the murderous bear was still around… still threatening his village, and his wife."
She paused, momentarily picturing the man in the story. "He was overcome with a newfound strength, then." She said with a smile. "And he stalked the creature as quietly as he could, and he succeeded."
Alluka blinked. "How?"
"By putting a spear behind the bear's back when it slept." Senritsu answered, but then her voice lowered a little as the story went on a darker turn. "But then dark aura surrounded the beast and it deteriorated into what seemed like black ash—only to mould itself into a nebulous form floating in the air. Its eyes glowed and, as if hypnotized, the man lost consciousness."
Senritsu stopped simply because it felt right. Naturally, Alluka's back straightened and she unconsciously raised her arms. "Then what happened?"
She smiled and looked at Alluka's ever-eager expression. "He woke up as the beast he thought he killed."
She paused again, but this time it was to ask a question. "What do you think happened, then?"
"The villagers kill the man-beast." Alluka said rather morbidly. Senritsu shook her head.
"The villagers were actually terrified their strongest men were slaughtered, and left the beast alone." She said. "They decided to build a wall to protect them, instead."
"…oh."
Senristu ignored the sound of disappointment in the younger girl's voice and continued on with that trademark gentle smile of hers. "Meanwhile…, the beast was promised power amongst the animals he now understood—animals, whose minds deemed purer than humans, kinder, more respectful. At one point he even began to think he was not cursed by the devil, but rather blessed by him.
"But one night, he snuck into the village—the wall was good against wild animals, but not against beasts with human minds—and he looked for his wife, only to find out she had been expecting the birth of their child." She paused. "The woman had been crying herself to sleep—praying for her husband's return, for her child did not deserve to grow without a father. The sight of his wife's tears broke the bear's heart.
"It was then that the beast went on a journey to find the devil—it was a long one, a journey that took many many winters. He had encountered many hardships, ones that merited his strength as a beast.
"But when he arrived at the devil's lair to seek his request the devil said: 'You may regain your human form, but your soul is now more of a beast's that a human's. Your body will deteriorate to make way to the human body, but that will only be temporary.'"
"I don't get it."
Senritsu chuckled at this. "It means he will die within a few days of transforming."
"Oh."
Again, Senritsu ignored the sudden perk in Alluka's voice. "The man chose to die, even if just for his child—one that should be reaching his pubescent years by then—to see his father, even if only for a few days." Senritsu stopped there, feeling her own erratic heartbeat. She understood that man's choice too well.
"Why would he do that? Spend his life just for a few days... he can always go and see him right? As a beast. He can even go to them and tell them he was the beast." Alluka explained like Senritsu and the story's hero was just being silly, particularly when she unsurprisingly wasn't very afraid of beasts. Senritsu smiled sadly.
"Love can make one do foolish things."
Alluka did not answer to that, instead adopted that all-too familiar heartbeat. Senritsu readied herself. "Senritsu-neesan." Alluka said almost monotonously. "Tell me a secret."
Senritsu did not have many secrets and although it should take her a few moments to rummage her head to find one, and it came very easily. The problem was speaking of it to another person. And with that, she heaved a sigh, as if it would give her courage.
Alluka waited patiently, abnormally still. And soon Senritsu, with a heavy heart, looked at her again to speak. "I have been harbouring strong feelings for someone who trusted me not to."
It was precisely then that Alluka's eyes turned black and even though Killua described it seeing it all in person came as a shock. Partnered with her confession, she mused that anyone could hear her heartbeat as well.
She extended her hand to touch 'Nanika' but stopped at the sight of her hands. Senritsu found herself assessing its small abnormal and ugly frame, and her eyes traced up to her accursed arm, and she saw the holity of her current body inside her mind's eyes.
It felt like many minutes, the silence, as Nanika and she stared at each other. But in reality Senritsu only listened to her own heartbeat as she came to a decision—a decision parallel to the man who turned to a bear.
She closed her eyes.
"I wish to be free of this curse."
...
As if signalling the granting of the wish, loud thunder boomed across the horizon, closely preceded by instantaneous illumination by lightning, all the way in another continent. The storm, it seemed, was rather from their area. But the rain was strong, and so was the wind. Not that it bothered the two teenagers facing each other.
Gon and Killua found a clearing half-a-kilometer after passing the surrounding forest's first tree. It was only then that the very drenched Killua was a hundred percent sure they were really going to do this. They circled around each other for a while, stances not aggressive, but certainly ones ready to attack any millisecond.
"Why all of a sudden?"
"You needed something to vent on."
"Someone to vent on." He corrected, mentally pointing at her little acumen. "Are you sure about this?"
She nodded. "Besides, I want to—" Gon paused and flipped her hair back. "The last time I sparred was many days ago—with Kurapika."
His feet stopped. "You sparred with Kurapika?"
"Yeah." She said with pride, her steps halting similarly. "I beat him by the way, it was purely physical after all—it could've turned out any way if we used Nen."
"Shall we? This time?"
"What do you think?"
"I'll probably beat you easily if we use nen."
"How rude!" She said, not backing out from a challenge. It made him want to laugh. "We should totally use Nen!"
But then they both pictured themselves doing just that, and they knew they'd destroy the compound the moment they lose track of the power they let out.
"On second thought—"
"Yeah. Not using nen abilities will make it more interesting anyway."
.
If it wasn't for the incessant dropping of water normal people, if they were around, would not even be aware of anything happening in that clearing. All they would've heard was booming sounds of ambiguous origins coming from all over the area, but primarily somewhere in the air. Deep mark of footprints would embed themselves in trees and the soils, occasionally followed by a tree falling or a rock crushing like cheese.
Killua, after realizing a stalemate for a minute—which was a long time with the pace they set—he began targeting Gon's weak spots. Which was now well-guarded, relatively. "No fair!" Gon huffed, stopping somewhere for a second. "You know my weaknesses!"
They're not much of weaknesses anymore, now are they? Killua mused. "I kinda knew you years ago, remember?"
"What're your weak spots?" She asked nonchalantly, as if he was easily going to answer, just before she sprinted towards him again.
"My weakness isn't hard to determine." He said blocking her kick with his legs and felt his body get pushed backwards. He crouched to maintain his balance.
He recalled the conversation they had not too long ago. He might have had the training to run when facing someone stronger—something he would've kept if he didn't take Illumi's needle out of his head—but he knew well what really was his biggest weakness.
In any case, as she attacked him and as he countered he couldn't help but allow his mind to go back to that fateful day five years ago and appreciating how strong they've become. He never stopped training, even with the weak targets, because he couldn't stomach being weak. And Gon got stronger as she dived into a place that forced her to. And he almost smirked at the fact he could now remember that day without cringing, going into some deep dark hole that would've taken too long even for his friends to pull him out.
Her palm coming at him when he was in midair pulled him back to reality and the next thing he knew he was already a cartwheel about to lose his balance. He managed to spin to land on his feet, but the force still made him slide through the mud.
Gon landed gracefully and stood still, smirking at him. "I almost used Kou there. Sorry."
"It's fine. I used Gyo instinctively."
"You should really stop spacing out, Killua." She said. "I just might injure you beyond recognition."
He smirked at this and took a stance. She did too, but this time it was him who attacked first. Once again, they entered a pace invisible to the typical human eye. Even a video camera would catch blurs at best.
But then when he was about to hit her shoulder with his palm, she disappeared. He found out a moment too late that she split her legs and used her hand to make herself spin, kicking his feet and forcing him on all five on the ground.
He willed his elbows to lift him up to the air so he'd have room to gain a decent center of mass when he felt a weight on him, pinning him down. The fact that she was on top of him was enough to make him freeze and—perhaps more importantly—long enough for her to call her win.
"2 Seconds!" She said, grinning. "I WIN!" Her eyes beamed at the stimulation and unconsciously raised her hand in victory. She was flushed with exhaustion and excitement and she just seemed so happy. And did he forget to mention she was straddling him?
There was only so much he could control himself.
Gon looked down at him—probably to gloat—but whatever expression he made, made her eyes widen and blush deeper. She put her hands down unconsciously and his hand grabbed one of her arms, pulling her to him. His other hand got behind her neck when she was close enough.
Ha. He mused part-sardonically. To hell with self-control.
