CHAPTER 20: Intoxicating
"Papa!" A young blonde runs towards her parents, who were sipping violet liquid on the porch. "What's that?"
"This is called wine." A pause. "It's like the grape juice for adults."
"For adults only?"She asks, the statement only making her more curious.
"Well, yes."
"I can't have a sip?"
"Just a sip." He almost said and hopefully her childish tastebuds will dislike it for a long time. But knowing she was his daughter, he thought she'd like it. Then she'd want to have more.
Pironn sweat-dropped and Kuromi only chuckled at her husband's weakness to their only child. She smiled and looked at the side of the room, where Kuroro stood patiently watching them—waiting for orders.
"Kuroro…"
He smiled—he was waiting for this, she knew—and the teenager nodded and walked towards the nine-year old Kurapika, and leaned down to her level. "I have something better than this wine." He said, extending his hand. "Want to see?"
And as always—she gladly took it.
.
They entered the basement of the house, the one with the entrance at the back, by their gardens. There were many barrels in the area. They were all bigger than she was.
"This is better than that wine?" She asked, turning her head up to look at him. He grinned.
"Yes." And then looked at the barrels again, and she mused how nice it was to see his eyes shine so much. "…because we're going to make our own."
Of course, he explained it can be consumed after a couple of years which she realized a couple of days later that it totally made sense. And even later she found out that wine didn't really need years to ferment. He promised that his wine in particular will taste better after a decade, and she believed that.
She wondered if their wine was still there.
Regardless, neither stayed after their exchange. He received a phone call from a woman (she could hear the tone of her voice) while she realized she needed to compose herself to be able to deal with him.
All she could think of at the moment was that Kuroro had been the only one who truly believed in her abilities—her independence. She adored him for it. Which was why she had been especially broken when she believed it was him who case her family so much pain.
But now it was okay, and—after seeing the side he hid—she decided to have a leap of faith. She'd follow as he asked. She wouldn't do anything rash to find her family's killers.
For now.
…
The first school day of the week, during a free period (Pariston-sensei had a meeting), she found herself near the door of Kuroro's office. In the week that he served as guidance councillor she heard a lot of things: he was handsome, that he was smart, and that he gave the most expert advice on love.
She sighed and, not bothering to hide her presence (it was no use anyway), lifted her hand to knock. But then there was no answer, and then she heard a small thump, and she immediately turned the knob in response.
Her worry was completely washed away by what she saw. He was sitting on the floor, a bit dishevelled, and a beautiful copper-skinned student on top of him looking quite… sensual.
"Kurapika—"
Letting her eyes turn red as something like this would've been extremely disconcerting, and she felt it was happening, so she closed her eyes and pulled herself together.
"I can explain—"
She pinched her nose and then held her temples as if a headache was coming. She held up her hand to speak with him. And then she exited the door, hoping to the skies that this—considering how most girls her age dealt with their crushes—wouldn't affect her efficiency at all.
…
By the time lunch came Kurapika was still particularly stoic, she manage to give out awkward smiles at Neon when she caught him looking at her with worry and watch him back as he took his eyes away like he usually did when their eyes meet.
Bisuke seemed openly exhausted though.
Apparently, she was still pretending to be Killua's girlfriend, at least when Nerys was in the vicinity. Kalluto seemed to be in on this now, and she was glad. Family members at odds with each other didn't sit well with Kurapika.
She looked at Gon and Killua. They were officially a couple now, it seemed, and she could tell that they kept their show of affections away from the public eye. They had this inveterate way of just existing near each other it was intriguing to watch.
Still, Kurapika could see how the platonic touches lingered, how their eyes communicated with such understanding, and how the atmosphere between them were simply sweeter despite most people not even knowing what they felt.
She was happy for them and even proud. But she couldn't help but feel disconcerted that they have such a mature relationship compared to her rather ambiguous one.
"Kurapika?" She turned to Neon, who was eyeing her worriedly. "Are you alright?" He asked, and even Kurapika knew what the question meant. When will you be ready to speak to me?, was what he really wanted to say.
"Yes." Is all she said, before completely turning to look at him. "What about you? How is your father faring?"
"Not too good," he said, partly with a shrug. He didn't want Kurapika to think little of him. "I'm trying to learn things to keep the companies afloat."
"I've studied a bit of business." She told him. "I can help you out if you wish."
"E-EH?" He was reminded of the old days—where they studied together, just the two of them. Kurapika, on the other hand, wanted to be of help. She waited for him to respond, hoping his pride would not get in the way. Finally, his stance softened and he gave her a grateful smile. "Deal."

Kalluto was surprised to know it was Gon. Neither really introduced themselves as a couple to her (or to anyone for that matter), especially when the way they had always been acting (according to Bisuke) was not too different.
To everyone, it seemed that they have always been a couple.
It had been so obvious—in the way her brother looked at her. She suddenly realized (in retrospect) that her brother had been trying desperately not to even allow Gon to be anywhere in his field of view.
It was around then that she remembered her enigmatic classmate, Feitan. And how Gon made his cold eyes—so similar to hers—look at her with warmth. She wondered if the little twinges on her chest were because she wanted to feel like Feitan did to someone, or if it had something more to do with Feitan himself. Kalluto was much too new to this.
"I wonder what I'll tell Nerys…" Kalluto mumbled as she stared at the piece of saturated meat she got from Gon. "She'd definitely want to join too if she finds out."
"We can deal with her." Bisuke shrugged. "She may be smart and strong—for her age anyway—but she has too many weaknesses that make her predictable."
"Weaknesses Bisuke-chama over here seems to understand well."
"Shut up Bansho."
"Yes, ma'am!"
"Well, here's some meat to help you relax a little." Gon whispered to Kalluto as the adults bantered about something else totally unrelated to the first topic. Kalluto looked at the shiny meat supported to stability by the older girl's chopsticks.
"How are calories supposed to do that?"
"I have my techniques." She grinned, and Kalluto wondered what was so good about everything for Gon to beam like that so often. "And I kind-a made them bathe in a lot of different herbs for a few hours." When Kalluto didn't answer, Gon pouted. "Mou—just try it!"
Then Kalluto finally ate the food and she brightened up—earning herself a beam from both Gon and Killua. "This… this is delicious."
"Thank you." Gon grinned and then put yet another slice on her plate. "You can another one."
Kalluto couldn't help but blush. No wonder her brother loved this girl so much.
…
"Amazing…" Killua said. "You even made Kalluto like you so much." Both Gon and Kalluto blushed at this. The latter puffed her cheek defiantly and looked away (silently pondering what it was that she showed to make her brother think like that). Gon, on the other hand, grinned from ear-to-ear.
"She does?!" Gon said then whipped her head to Kalluto, who then had to keep her head facing away because it was gravitating to look at her. "You do?!"
There were a few moments of silence that passed and Kalluto knew it was because Gon was waiting for her response. Kalluto was having a dilemma. What should she say to ease the tension? Disagreeing seemed easy, because the other option, albeit true, was incredibly uncomfortable and embarrassing.
But in the end, all she could do was nod.
"Whoa." Gon mumbled, shoulders slumping in relief. "I'm so glad."
Bisuke and Vaise, on the other hand, laughed while Basho ruffled Killua's head out-of-nowhere. "Your sister's adorable." He said. "And with that reaction we could easily tell now…"
"You two are siblings."
…
It was around fifteen minutes before the bell rang when Bisuke finally stood in front of them in the authoritative air that informed them she was going to tell them something fairly serious. "Okay, brats! New mission!"
Everyone listened carefully. "We know how rich kids tend to spend away on things more than just their cars or their clothes." "We found out that they have been spending a bit on alcohol and drugs."
"Eh?"
"This isn't something novel. This has been a normal behaviour for many well-off teens and adults for centuries now."
"I don't get it." Gon mumbled, recalling their field trip in the informal settlements. "How come?"
"Because the rich don't need to work, have too much money, plus they tend to go undisciplined having so much power and resources tend to do that." Bisuke closed her eyes. "Drug users below the poverty line are likely using drugs because of their situation."
"But didn't the school board create measures against that?" Kurapika asked, the face of a certain president-slash-councillor popped up her head. He didn't seem like the type not to do his job with inhuman meticulousness.
"Indeed they have." Bisuke said with certainty. "But somehow students manage to sneak some in recently." "We found out because in one of the areas in the popular gardens, we found an odd powder." "We had it checked and it tested positive."
"You mission is to find out who is culpable for this," she paused. "Understood?"
.
.
And that was how they ended up in the very infamous-in-the-club Kou Hanabusa's mansion (go figure), dressed in casual clothes, and disguised just enough not to be recognized as party crashers. It seemed that none of them were invited to this party, even when they were all pretty well-known in the school, and they had a hunch it had something to do with their membership in a club that only few people knew about.
They hid their presences well, several kilometres from the house. And that was why when, because of the depressingly huge amount of teenagers walking to and fro, Kou and Gon bumped to each other, they were both very surprised.
"Y-You!" He yelled, but he already smelled of the beverage. The he slumped and leaned down a little and it reminded her of their moment the last time she had been in his house. "How do you like my party so far?"
"I'm… not very fond of the noise." She admitted as she tentatively looked around. "Or the smell." It was true. The noise of the chattering (the pitch of intoxicated kids was particularly higher) and the smell of both the alcohol and the vomit they induce was really making her want to barf.
"No partying? No alcohol?" Kou animatedly asked, looking at her pitifully. "Boring a life you have."
"Do you do drugs, too?"
"What? 'course not." He hiccupped. "That's just disgusting."
She was relieved at this. At least not everyone in the house used the substance. She didn't know what it did yet to people, but from what she heard—none of them were good. She turned to Kou, just before she gestured to leave. "You should stop with the drink as well, though," she told him. "You're going to be embarrassed very soon."
"You're so boring." Kou announced, apparently not getting the hint she was about to leave. "C'mon now, have a drink." And he placed (forced) a glass on Gon's hand.
Gon took it and stared at it. She disliked the smell, but she was already used to it to some degree. After all, the first floor of their house in the rural areas was a country bar. Kou watched her intently as the glass got closer and closer to her mouth.
And then a moment later, the glass disappeared from her hands and followed by a knocked-out Kou Hanabusa.
"What the heck Gon—why are you allowing that guy to offer you a drink?!"
"I wasn't going to drink too much of it." She said. "I was just trying to figure out what's so good about it."
"There isn't one." Killua said, albeit a bit harshly. "They just forget reality for a moment."
"They want to forget what is real?" She asked, and he was about to nod, when his eyes widened slightly at what she said next. "Then… doesn't that mean that they were unhappy?"
…
Looking from flushed face to flushed face, Neon realized he recognized most of them—he used to eat lunch with them at the lawn.
"Cocaine's the drug for rich people right?" Bashou asked, hidden in the shadows along with Vaise and Bisuke and him. Kurapika and the others had already spread out, trying to look for the kids using the addictive substance. Soon, Killua arrived back with them with Gon not very far away. She was concentrating on hearing conversations that they would've had a hard time catching.
"Obviously these kids are minors so they'd be in trouble for underage drinking…" Vaise whispered. "Now I wonder who'll get a positive in the imminent drug test."
Double-checking on Gon (he knew he should trust her, and he did, but it just didn't sit right with him to show her something like this when he could help it), Killua ruffled something out of his pocket and revealed a small plastic bag with fine silver powder in it. "Found this on one of the students heading to the lounge." "I'm guessing that's where they take it."
"What do they do with it?" Neon asked, while Gon stared at it and tilting her head in puzzlement. "Dilute it in water?"
"The sniff it."
"Seriously? This is so disturbing—" Neon could feel his stomach churn and silently thanked the heavens that no one dared introduce the substance to him yet, and (considering his current social status) no one probably would even try now.
Basho leaned down to examine the plastic, throwing it up lightly like a tennis ball. "Cocaine?"
Then the small container disappeared from the bulky brunette's hand and found its way to Killua's, who looked at it with seriousness that made them all stare at him. "This isn't cocaine—this is worse." He said, to everyone's surprise. "Anita Spice."
"What?"
"It is highly addictive. Mild amounts give euphoria and energy boosts, but a little more and another reality is made—delusions and hallucinations." He explained. "It's kind of sick the original dealer named the drug after his own daughter."
"You know the original dealer?"
"I was the one who killed him." Killua corrected, eyes automatically darting back to Gon. "His daughter and wife, if I'm not mistaken, were also killed by their former clients, unsatisfied with the sudden loss of supply." "I'm not sure how the mines are rediscovered, but it did, because as far as I know it's the only one."
Then it occurred to him—who else other than his own family (and their close associates) would be aware of such details? Further, how many of them actually studied in the school?
He huffed a sigh, and he was suddenly uninspired to make a move. "That woman is so troublesome."
…
"Nerys."
"Oh my, Kalluto-chan!" Nerys mumbled graciously, although she really was surprised. Kalluto had been known for her perfect Zetsu. "What could you be doing here? Do you want to have a taste as well?"
"Why are you doing this?" Kalluto asked, looking around the lobby filled with creepily-smiling teens. "This is disgraceful."
"No it's not." She laughed, and Kalluto knew this had something to do with her brother finally taking Killua with him—rendering Nerys with no anchor to attract him. "It's actually looked up upon didn't you know? It's cool." Then the ebony-haired girl paused. "I don't need to take it myself, of course," she smirked. "I'm amazing enough without it.
"Besides… don't you see? It's great fun and gives a completely different sort of high." She waved them off unashamedly. "See? They're all so happy."
The men and women were either dancing lewdly or swirling around or talking to air like idiots. They were all beaming, had red-flushed face, and laughing incessantly—powerful energies colliding.
However… Kalluto already saw what happiness looked like and—this was not it. Especially not after the drug's effects wore off.
Nerys, who had been smiling confidently, noticed the rare change of expressions on her face. It was around that time Nerys realized she lost Kalluto as well.
Her smirk disappeared and was replaced by a frown. "Oi—don't you dare give up on this." She said, referring to getting Killua. Kalluto, however, sighed and shook her head.
"He's here right now, you know."
Nerys normally wouldn't mind—Killua murdered countless of people already—but there was something in the way Kalluto said it that made her stomach drop.
And then not even a few seconds later…, she caught sight of his silver hair.
...
Less than fifteen minutes passed when every unknowing student in the vicinity had passed out—some by the drug, some by the alcohol, and mostly because the Hunter Club rendered them so. Nerys only sat by one of the couches, trying to appear cool and indifferent, but her lingering looks at Killua told them otherwise.
The plan was that they deal with the students themselves, and make records on who were involved. They would be reporting to the Principal and the President afterwards to decide their punishments.
Gon was asked to find Kurapika, but mostly because Killua simply didn't want Nerys to see her. This time though, Gon really knew what he was planning on doing, and she didn't seem to mind anymore.
With En, Gon found Kurapika standing idly by the balcony, looking as if she just wanted to feel the wind. But when Gon stood beside her she saw that she was blushing and her eyes dreamy and Gon had an inkling feeling that Kurapika was drunk.
"I didn't get the chance to be traumatized by alcohol as a child." The blonde said lazily with a shrug, half-remorseful. "Curiosity got the best of me."
"You didn't drink too much, did you?"
"Only a glass." She said. "I always wondered what wine tastes like…"
Obviously there was something with Kurapika and wine but Gon didn't say anything. It seemed private, and… she was distracted by how Kurapika was at the moment.
She looked so… relaxed and carefree.
A part of her hoped to see Kurapika more like that. She always seemed so on-guard. But of course, Gon hoped it could be achieved without alcohol…
But at the same time, Gon knew it was the time to ask things where she wanted Kurapika to open up. "Kurapika…" She began slowly, partly feeling guilty of taking advantage. "Are you ever going to tell us more about you?" "You seemed particularly having troubles lately…"
"It's because of that guy."
"Eh?" This was not what she expected. "Who?" Gon felt a little scared because she was speaking under the influence, but curiosity got the best of her.
"Him." She droned out, as if she knew the guy (did she?). "The guy I thought killed my whole clan. Apparently it was a misunderstanding and—" Kurapika was stopped by an oncoming hiccup. "I'm sorry." "I'm feeling a bit dizzy."
Kurapika seemed to have an extremely low tolerance with alcoholic beverages. How unexpected.
But then her guard went up feeling a presence suddenly revealing itself. It approached so quickly Gon wasn't able to react until he was already there.
"G-Guidance councillor?"
The raven-haired man ignored her and looked at the blonde and sighed. He looked part-worried and part-amused. Kurapika slowly turned her head to face him too, but seemed to feel horrible enough not to react at all. Gon watched as the very popular councillor walk to Kurapika and touched her head.
There was something intimate about the simple gesture—the light caressing of her head, sliding gently to touch her temples, and then her cheeks—that made Gon blush just by watching it.
"I'll take her to her house."
"Ah…Wait, what—"
But Kuroro was already carrying her in his arms and Gon couldn't help but blush even more. Still—Gon knew better to leave a beautiful young girl with a man she didn't know. Gon wasn't that trusting, especially not when her friends were involved.
But then—
"Kuroro…" Kurapika whispered softly and snuggled closer to him, as if relishing his heat.
Gon froze at her friend's tone, suddenly close to putting the pieces of the puzzle together, and Kuroro ended up smirking a little. "I guess that's reason enough to trust me?"
And Gon could only nod.
…
"Where's Kurapika?"
"She already went home."
The others stared at her for a second, unsure if she was serious, but never really found it in themselves to ever doubt what Gon said. They all knew she was hiding something (Gon was never a good liar) but they trusted her enough to have good reasons for keeping things from them.
In any case, by that time they had already made records of the fiasco that happened. Nerys had escaped already (no one really tried going after her—she's too much of a headache, Killua said), while the rest would be unconscious until the next day.
Neon, who was fairly shaken at what his old friends' had been doing, was taken home by his guards soon after. Bisuke also bid her goodbyes as they passed the gates, leaving Gon, Killua, and Kalluto together outside the estate.
Kalluto shyly bid her goodbyes as well, but Killua—remembering the tense atmosphere between her and Nerys when he arrived—spoke before she headed anywhere else. "Nerys is unstable right now. You can come live with us, too, Kalluto."
"Eh?"
"That's a great idea!" Gon said clasping her hands together. "Three siblings in one roof." "I'm envious."
Kalluto seemed to ponder at this—disbelieving—but she nodded in the end. Her eyes shifted to Gon though and then to her brother who (ever since Gon was standing beside him) couldn't take his eyes away from her. "I'll meet you at your suite onii-san." She said and turned away.
"You look like you really want to kiss her now." Kalluto told her brother, who turned into a tomato. "But I'm too young to see it."
Gon stared at them and scratched her cheek and there was silence until they arrived in front of Gon's doorstep some time later, still blushing because of what Kalluto blurted out. Killua cursed his sister in a semi-serious semi-playful way he didn't think he'd ever feel towards the usually-quiet girl.
"So… will I see your other sister too?" She said trying to break the ice.
"Yeah." He said awkwardly. "I'm sure you two will get along just fine." "Hey Gon—about what Kalluto said."
"I don't mind." She said immediately that it made both of them blush furiously.
"I… can… kiss you again?"
"It wasn't like we never kissed since we got together…" She said and it was true—a statement that seemed more impactful because it was in that same spot where they had their first.
But there was something about the way her eyes dilated, how her cheeks reddened, and how her lips puffed and appeared even more luscious than usual that made it all seem a little different.
One would think both of them got drunk.
In any case, Killua gulped and awkwardly leaned down feeling as if he was doing this the first time, and their lips met—a familiar wave of pleasurable sensations engulfed his body as it happened.
He had been on edge since she saw him with that bastard Kou—how she tried to understand his situation. Her thinking of it as collective of every student there didn't really mean much to him. It bothered him. Because he could relate—not to have meaning in life, to be directionless, until they met that one substance that made it all enjoyable again. Although to him, it was never alcohol or drugs. It was a person.
But of course he wanted to be a better man for her so he didn't let his possessiveness show. But to his little sister—whom he realized had always been watching him—it was very obvious. And now he was reaping what he sowed.
There were a lot of things that kept him from confessing to her—both selfish and selfless reasons. Then she accepted him, even after every bad decision that he made.
And without knowing, he got greedy.
And he got addicted to her.
Killua was pulled out of his reverie by a soft moan. His eyes widened.
"K-Killua…" She whispered, her face flush as he held it with both his hands. So warm, so warm—
But then he saw how uncomfortable she looked—still, what was it? Ecstasy?—he forced himself out of it. "D-Did I d-do anything weird?"
Shyly, she shook her head. "I was just surprised when you licked my lips."
"I—what?!" He yelled letting go of her face by reflex. Seriously, with how his face was heating up, he thought he'd be having a nosebleed very soon. Kami-sama this is embarrassing. "I-I'm sorry."
Then he gathered his courage to look at her and she shook his head. Something's climbing up from his stomach, he is nauseous—but oddly, in a good way. "Does that mean I can do it again?" He asked awkwardly, without thinking, and he knew he was pushing his luck. If she agreed, he wanted to be present this time.
He also wanted to hear that moan again.
Gon stared at him, her eyes wide in surprise. And he dipped his head again, catching her soft lips, and began with chaste kisses. He let his impulses take over and changed the angle of his head, finally licking her lips. She gasped this time, and—with the desire to taste more of her—his carnal instincts took over and he deepened the kiss, pinning her to the column right behind her.
Intoxicating.
Killua wondered, a little guiltily, what he did to deserve this.
.
Then—as if the fates really, really, hate/despise/abhor him—the door creaked.
"Is that you Gon? I let myself in—"
They part ways and whipped their heads towards the door. It wasn't Ging, judging by the feminine voice (thank God), but it certainly didn't make the whole situation any less embarrassing. Less lethal yes, but still embarrassing.
He looked at Gon who absolutely twinkled at the sight of the newcomer, though. "M-M-Mito-san?" She squeaked before letting go of him to hug the woman.
Killua scratched the back of his neck as he watched the exchange. Mito looked nice and motherly, as Gon described, and maybe she wouldn't dislike him. But then her head turned to him, and—with a plastered smile—she emitted a really dark aura directed right at him.
He swore never to kiss Gon in front of her house ever again.
