CHAPTER 22: Treasure

It was before the morning session ended when Bisuke finally decided to call on the two boys—Killua and Neon—who seemed down, one reason or another. She turned her head to the latter's guards and asked what was going on. After all, Killua was fine earlier that morning, while Neon seemed to still be affected by whatever affected him the previous day.

"I don't know about Killua but Neon-sama's problem has to do with his love life."

"It does not!" Neon yelled, while Killua started mumbling something in utter terror. Bisuke literally poked him with a stick.

"What's with you?" She asked and to her surprise he looked at her in despair, rather than with the glare she had anticipated.

"I…well, I…" Killua turned his head down, obviously scared. He was even paler than usual. However, before Bisuke asked about it, Gon arrived looking positively excited.

"Sorry I'm late!" She yelled, squeaking, just before seeing Killua and his pitiful state. "Killua? You okay?"

Killua quickly pushes down whatever is scaring him and smiles at Gon. "Of course."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

Gon blinked, but she shrugged in the end. "Well, I'm sure Mito-san is looking forward to meeting you tonight as well."

The others stare at each other, then, with Bisuke sighing with a mix of pity and amusement. "Well, that explained it."

Regardless, the two boys continued to brood for the rest of the morning.

The news of the fiasco two nights prior and the decision made a day later (and just announced) already spread to every person at school. There were quite a few suspensions, all of which controversial, with one of them being the Bloodsworth who started it all.

No one was expelled, however, as expected, because all of the kids were backed up by powerful families. They were, however, warned that they would be expelled if they did anything like that again. Honestly, they were just impressed Hanabusa had the guts to tell the parents off, though Kurapika had an idea there was someone behind the curtains that made sure the kids were still punished in the first place.

Regardless, a class later and everything was back to normal.

The club actually wondered if history truly wasn't going to repeat itself.

Meanwhile, Pariston was still absent. Today's class was taken over by Home-ec teacher Hanzo, who said he's a ninja so—by default—he knew a lot about History. Kurapika ignored the baldman's antics and wondered why the blonde teacher was absent for so long. In retrospect, his excessive absences seemed to have extended all the way from the formation of the Hunter Club.

"I miss Pariston-sensei…" Her seatmate told the friend in front of her. The other girl sighed dreamily and, as if contagious, a few other girls nearby did the same. Even Kurapika would admit she did miss the blonde, even if only due to his capability to teach so much in a short amount of time.

Hanzo flinched and for a second they thought he'd heard their comments (he was a ninja, after all) but to their surprise he sniffed and sniffed and a look of panic dawned to him. He ran to the window and slid it open, looking down, pace pale in horror.

"MY BREAD!" He yelled and jumped down.

This was not really an unusual sight with the guy, so after feeling a little surprised at the jump to the lower floor, everyone just began chatting about. "He's a HomeEc teacher, how can he forget he was baking something?"

"Nobody knows…"

Then, almost instantaneously, a random guy leaned down to whisper. "I hear there's trouble in paradise with Menchi-sensei…"

"Ehh…"

Kurapika just sighed. Gossip was the favourite past time in here, even if this was the so-called high society (or perhaps, even more so because of it). She barely noticed the girl besides her looking for something in her bag with increasing alarm, just before she left the room.

Basho arrived back upstairs just to see the class period ending a bit early, with Neon standing up to see them. There was a long break then, and he flinched when a girl broke into a sob. The other students comforted her but it was obvious they were really just troubled, if not annoyed, and was mostly being polite.

Apparently, the student lost an important item. It was simple and not as expensive as the rest of her items, but it was valuable.

Vaise returned with a shrug, which got Neon and Basho's attentions. "She's pretty rich. She has all the consumerist gadgets money can buy." Basho nodded, adding some trivia of his own. "And she has five cars. One for each day." One of Neon's eyebrows rose as he stared at his guards, who shrugged in response. They (Vaise and Basho) had been tasked to know everyone classmate, especially one who was sticking so close to Neon, well at least before he lost his status.

In any case, they decided to stay for one more minute to see if it would be settled. (After all, she sat right next to Kurapika. Who knew if she'd accuse her of something).

"It is given to me by Jake—oh, Jake." Jake was a boy she had been bragging about, Vaise explained. He was a son of a duke of sorts, but was sent somewhere for some 'unknown reason' (though Basho would later whisper that the boy was a wild party guy, and was a huge disappointment to his parents, and also one of the people suspended).

The guards also knew she loved Jake because he was 'princely' and' gorgeous' and 'no one fits better for her, especially now that Neon-sama is becoming poor' though neither said so out-loud.

Similarly, Neon recalled how his life was hanging out with these people—how superficial. Basho looked at Neon, part-jokingly, but he first hand experienced his seemingly childish (he was for most part) boss' sense of morality. It exceeded expectations. "You want to help her?"

"Find something she only loved because of something sappy as a first love?" His eyes darted at Kurapika's desk, as usual. "No."

Basho shrugged. "Well, lesson learned right?" The man paused, sneaking a glance at him. "As they say—some people just don't know what they have until they lost them."

"In other words, people only prize things when they're gone." Vaise added, also sneaking a glance. "And now it's more valuable than ever."

This only made Neon's eyes twitch. "Why are you looking at me?!"

On another building, a certain cerulean-eyed boy snapped out of his wildly nervous state and eyed the old janitor Hatori. He had been there for a while, though he wasn't certain for how long it had been exactly. He couldn't imagine what he'd do for the old man, after finding out what Illumi did to him and his family.

"Why don't you just give him company?"He flinched to see Gon suddenly beside him, smiling. Apparently he was distracted enough that he didn't notice Gon even when she was not using zetsu.

"I…I don't even know what to say."

"It doesn't matter," she said. "Just do it!" Then she patted his shoulder, lifting herself up to him to whisper. "No regrets."

"But…"

But she grinned and pushed him towards the man, who looked up at his new companion. "Hatori-san!" Gon said with a wave. "Need a hand?"

The old man gaped at Killua, a hand raised, utterly uncomfortable at seeing a privileged student doing his job in his stead. "I really can do this myself…"

"N-No it's okay! I want to help. And just call me whenever you need help." And he mopped the floor like crazy and wiped the walls even crazier. There were still classes then, so thankfully no one was there to see and make even more of a scene at his current state.

The old man only stared, jaw hardening, but at the same time his eyes were soft. "He must be a Zoldyck, then. The killer of my family."

This made Killua freeze and whip his head towards the old man, cerulean eyes wide as a disk. His hand dropped the mop and he strode to the man's direction, giving a full half-body bow. "You may take revenge on me."

Then he recalled a classic tactic for revenge, and dread flooded through him. Maybe he shouldn't have admitted anything. "Not on Gon!" Then anger boiled just at the thought. "Don't even think of hurting her."

But his fear dissipated once he heard a genuine laugh resounding in the corridor. "I couldn't even if I wanted to." He said light-heartedly, before adopting a more serious—though unexpectedly serene—facial expression. "I am too old to think about stressful things like vengeance. Even in my lowly life right now, I can still find meaning in helping others. You do not need to fret."

"But—"

"I will never forgive the murderer of my family. I suspect I will haunt him after my death." He said, not letting him finish. "But I am not blind to think that is you."

Killua could honestly only gape at him, and the old man's seriousness softened to a degree. He walked towards Killua and patted his shoulder.

"Time could do wonders to people, such as soften up a strict—even greedy—man like myself into what I am now…" Then he opened his eyes and looked straight into Killua's. "At the same time, having much time shows capability for great change… even with regards to the good things we have now.

"Treasure her, child."

Neon stood passively in front of a room, alone and nervous.

He heard many rumors about the new guidance councillor. He knows the man is good-looking, he had seen him before. They say he was regal, too. And he gave good advice in a department he particularly didn't like discussing: His Love Life.

"Aren't you going to enter?"

He flinched and whipped his head to the right. "B-Basho?"

"You know it's not like he's going to come out and greet you."

"V-VAISE?!" He yelled, whipping his head to the other side, but cleared his throat to keep calm. "W-What are you two doing here?"

"We'll always follow you around." They said, with Basho grinning ear-to-ear, the bastard. "You didn't seem to want to though so we hid ourselves."

"I have to say my patience got stretched thin so here we are."

Neon tutted and crossed his arms, glaring at the door in front of him. "I'll go in now. Go away."

He lifted his hand to reach the knob when it turned on its own, revealing one of his classmates. He stopped the door from closing and took a reluctant step into the room's carpeted interior. "Mr. Nostrade." The man uttered, staring at him, a bit surprised. "How unexpected." He said and Neon concluded his appeal was much more than he had imagined, especially considering he had already seen him once when he was introduced. Never had he been so intimidated at a sight.

What changed since he first saw him during the ceremony?

He had to use a lot of force to even utter a word. "A-Ah."

"What's the matter, young man?"

"I'm here to ask for help." He straightens up, as if to retain whatever is left of his pride. "The first and last."

"Well, you're in luck." He said, nonchalantly relaxing into his chair. "It is my last day as councillor."

"Really?"

"Yes." The dark-haired man answered, tone indicating he probably will not explain further. Neon wanted to ask why, but that's not really proper. The man however seemed to sense his curiosity and answered anyway. "I got this job for a purpose. And now it's done." He said.

Though, for some reason, Neon's stomach dropped a little.

He got out to see Vaise and Basho chatting with the clinic apprentice. After a couple of years seeing him around, he knew that his name began with the letter L and rhymed with lion. There was something he didn't like about this guy, either.

When the coated dude excused himself with wave, his guards turned to him, though they're still a bit red from grinning too much due to whatever funny thing the doctor said. "How was the talk?"

"He just tells me to express my feelings." He droned, as if the words he was uttering was sappy and ridiculous. "Few women likes men who doesn't show them how they feel, he said." Then he looked away. "Women like certainty, he told me, much more than men do."

"That's true." Vaise said with a smile, which Neon did not appreciate. "The nature of woman is to crave for stability, especially for their men."

"I thought girls like bad boys?" Basho said, wiggling his eyebrows, earning him a punch.

"They're exciting and affection from them tends to make sappy girls feel special." Vaise said after heaving a sigh. "Whatever the case, those type tend to be more aggressive aren't they?"

"Good advice."

"He tells me it's his last day though."

"Really?" This time it was the intern who spoke. "Haven't heard that one." Then he shrugged, arranging his tie with a sparkling grin. "Less rival for ladies' affections, then."

They just sighed.

They arrived at their spot half the time late. "You're late." Bisuke said, already finishing up her bento. "Where'd you come from?"

"He got advice for his—" Basho shut his mouth when Neon turned to glare at him. "…nothing."

They joined the circle and eat, like they usually did, occasionally teasing Killua of his upcoming parents' meet. It was then that they sensed another presence.

Nerys, in all her glory, sauntering towards them with a haughty gesture and an even haughtier face.

"Aren't you suspended?"

"However did you think I'd listen to school authority?" She said, waving him off. "Besides, what's wrong with me visiting my fiancé?" She touched his face and Killua's jaw tightened.

Gon stepped forward to help him (and she got to admit she was very annoyed by the touch) but Bisuke extended her hand to stop her. Bisuke knew Nerys was still unaware of Gon's relationship with Killua so she shortly walked to the two and went in between. Nerys eyed the shorter girl, frowning. "You again." She said, with a prim version of an eye-roll. "As a lady of upbringing, I am very much against catfights."

Bisuke just sent her a smug smirk making the dark-haired girl wince in annoyance. Just in time, the school bell rang indicating lunch time was over. "You kids should go to class." Bisuke said in a way that made Nerys feel forgotten. Her eyes twitched, while the others looked at Bisuke with uncertainty. "And after-school training is cancelled. For someone's scary appointment." Killua's eyes twitched at this, but did not openly react.

Gon's eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Nerys, who was simmering. Bisuke sensed this, though her lackadaisical attitude did not betray so. Nerys doesn't see anything else but the insult. "Are you really going to underestimate me?"

If one could nonchalantly slap away a glare, Bisuke would have done so. Instead, she just looked at her students and shooed them away. "Just go." She said with finality, and they reluctantly left the clearing. Vaise allowed herself to stay, kicking Basho on the knee when he thought of doing the same. "Someone should stay, and you have a young master to guard."

"Tsk." Basho muttered, giving Bisuke and Nerys a passing glass, before lumbering away.

Nerys' eyes twitched as she watched her classmates go, before glaring at the woman before her. The younger girl then crossed her arms and smirked, promising the other a world of pain.

Though unsurprisingly, Vaise would think a minute later, that that very same smirk was wiped off her face.

Bisuke sighed at the scratch on her arm, the only injury she sustained, as she walked out the clearing where the young Nerys laid down the grass with a bloodied lip, a couple of bruises, two broken bones, and a very red face indicative of deep humiliation.

"That was very nice of you, helping Killua out that way." Vaise said as she fell into step with the blonde, giving her a look, as if she was searching for something. "You're actually very supportive of the kids."

"I'm not attracted to that brat if that's what you're asking." Bisuke said with a shrug. "I guess I just wanted to show my support as a mentor."

Vaise gave her that look women usually gave to oblivious men, and Bisuke eventually sighed, knowing she was somewhat transparent to the motherly woman. "Once upon a time, there was this boy. A boy I couldn't support, even just the littlest bit more than empty words."

"An unrequited love?"

She shook her head. "Not exactly. I couldn't support him in any of his endeavours, actually, because I wasn't there."

Vaise was silent for a moment, pondering, and it wasn't until they reached the building that her eyes widened at a theory. "Your…son?" Vaise voiced out, not waiting for a confirmation. "Don't you think you should go to him?"

"It's too late." Bisuke said, suddenly walking faster that she was ahead of Vaise.

Something got caught in Vaise's throat, an image of the boy she thought of as her own son—Neon—in danger passed by her head. "Is he… dead?"

"No."The blonde said, back facing her, and somehow Vaise could see the sadness in her form. "Though he probably wishes I am."

Meanwhile, inside a high-end restaurant ("Sky Lounge" it was called, as it was situated at the roof deck of one of the tallest structures in the country), a certain red-head—one a bit out-of-place due to her slightly rural clothing—was striding across the halls, leaving, mumbling incoherent curses.

Mito put a hand on her temples, feeling an impending headache coming up. "I just don't understand that guy." She mumbled as she rode down the elevator, after meeting a guy Ging asked her to see.

She knew Ging was odd, but the guy looked insane. How could they be friends?

But then she remembered she was going to meet Gon's boyfriend today, so a bad mood was not welcome.

She sighed in the end, knowing nothing will make much sense with those two anyway, so she stepped out of the elevator wordlessly. Her frown continued as the cart traversed downward however, uncaring of the people going in and out of the elevator, all the way until it opened to the ground floor.

Her frown transformed into surprise at the first person she saw.

The guy was sparkling. Literally. She did not know it was possible.

"Am I correct to suppose this is your stop, Mito?" The handsome blonde asked, a glint of amusement in his eyes, pulling her back to the present. She blushed furiously, her eyes widened before stepping out of the elevator, head down in embarrassment.

Then, upon a realization, she whipped her head around to look at him. He was staring at her, the same glint in his eye mixed with something a bit more intense, but the elevator closed as soon as she opened her mouth to ask him how he knew her name.

Night arrived in the campus but a certain group of students sat on branches of a massive deciduous tree, arriving one by one. There had been a silent agreement between them, the students, to go to the meeting spot together.

Feitan eyed the two people who were there before him. "What time?" He asked. "We should wait for Paku and Dancho." Shalnark told him while Shizuku watched on. "They're here anyway."

"Early Bird Trio, I'd like to call you. Fitting name, yes? Seeing as you're always the first to arrive."

They simultaneously turned their heads to the source of the voice, walking towards them from the ground. They all narrowed their eyes at him. "What are you doing here?"

"Scoping school grounds." He just said with that usual drawl of his.

"What for?"

"To familiarize myself with the setting, of course."

"What?"

Silence passed and Shalnark laughed a little, breaking it. "Don't tell me you're going to teach here?" He said, joking voice showing off his sarcasm. To their surprise, Hisoka did not make his usual quip. Instead, he smiled, and they all shivered.

"Oh my, Shalnark-kun. As smart as always."

They stared at him. "You can't be serious."

It was Feitan who jumped down to meet the man face-to-face, his height not limiting the intimidating air he naturally exuded. "You're not the type to teach."

"A favour is asked by a… friend."

"You had a friend?"

Hisoka only chuckled. "You'll be surprised."

Meanwhile, on another side of campus, Kurapika just finished her self-training and treaded to the guidance councilor's office knowing he usually stayed later than any other faculty member. To her surprise, she met Leorio on her way there. He stared at her, similarly startled. "What are you still doing here?"

"Training and meditating." She said, one eyebrow raised, and gave him a stern look, wordlessly asking him what he was doing in this part of campus.

"I was going to ask for advice before he resigned." He said ambiguously, pointing his thumb at the direction he came from. "But as expected no one's at the office anymore…"

"Who?"

"The new guidance councilor." He said with a shrug, looking at the ceiling while he mused. "You know in retrospect he looks really familiar…like I've seen before years ago… Kurapika?" He blinked when he looked back down to see his blonde friend, who was then a bit paler than usual. "What is it?" He asked about to raise his hand to check her temperature, but she walked past him before he could even reach her head.

"Oi." He called, but she just continued walking, leaving a very confused doctor behind.

Kurapika strode to the president's office and did not knock, unceremoniously entering the massive room, eyes immediately fixed to where she expected him to be. Sure enough, there he was sitting on his massive chair, though he was facing the window, with Pakunoda standing not too far away in front of his desk. He turned the chair at the sound of her arrival, expression certainly telling her it was expected.

"Is it because of me?" She asked, straight-to-the point and somehow this seemed to amuse him—the glint of his eye said so. He asked Pakunoda to do an errand Kurapika had no doubt did not exist.

He stood up as the door closed once more, walking towards her and stopping a mere feet away, height towering hers. "I entered because of you," he explained. "What's so surprising about that?"

"I don't understand you."

"What happened to the leap of faith I asked you to take?"

She frowned, but as she looked at him more closely she noticed there was sadness in his eyes she could not place. "What is it?" She uttered, eyes on his, not caring her slight fearfulness showed in her orbs. "What happened?"

His hand found its way on the side of her head, and he leaned closer and his lips tentatively touched hers. Her eyes never left his. There was something nagging about his expression, but she let him do what he wishes. He leaned down again and this time his lips stayed for seconds longer. Soon he was changing the angle of his head and his other hand found its way on her other cheek.

His kisses were slow and steady, warm and kind, and it felt like he is relishing the moment—as if he knew it would not last.

This didn't bide well with her, and she pressed her lips together in apprehension. To her surprise, he licked it, but she didn't move.

"Open up, Kurapika." He uttered, thinking she hadn't gotten the message. But when he licked it again she opened up her mouth, giving him better access, and the warmth in her core escalated to searing heat as his tongue explored her mouth.

For now, she ignored the troublesome feelings in her gut and lets her hand travel to his head and to his hair, replying to his kisses with the same fervency. She felt his hand on her back and he pushed her flush to him—making him feel the strength of his body—and she responded with wrapping her arms around his neck as if relishing in it.

They parted away when they lost their breaths, with him placing his forehead against hers, huffing. She smiled when he placed one more kiss—a tender one—on the side of her face.

He placed his forehead on hers and she closed her eyes, revelling in his warmth. She decided that, like him, she will treasure this moment—Her questions momentarily forgotten.

FREECS HOUSEHOLD

Dinner was a lot less awkward than Killua expected.

Mito was very civil, and she certainly kept the conversations going when Gon and Killua momentarily ran out. She occasionally eyed him warily, especially when it came to his relationship with Gon (the question 'how far have you gone?' promptly got juice on her carpet), but she was very nice to him overall.

She still looked at him apprehensively though, but by the time they were chatting away in the courtyard he had a feeling that her worries was less about what he would do than about something else. Some few hours since their arrival, Mito's body language soon indicated their chat was about to end.

"I will be leaving for home tomorrow, and I trust nothing inappropriate will occur while I am gone." Mito spoke, grimly drinking tea in the process. "Do you understand?"

"MITO-SAN!" Gon exclaimed while Killua's body just straightened up like a good soldier.

"YES MA'AM!"

"Who are you calling 'ma'am'?"

"YES MITO-SAN." He said and she gave him a light smile. She heaved a deep breath and looked away, as if remembering something.

"I really would've preferred that he doesn't make things hard for you…"

"Hmn?"

Mito sighed. "Well, you'll find out soon enough."

"Well, that went…well. I think." Gon said as she walked him to the outside of the community. Killua nodded though the thought at the forefront of his mind was the fact that they were fairly far away from the house.

"Well, I'm still in one piece."

"Killlua—"

He chuckled just before he stopped his tracks, turning to face her. She blinked at their proximity and he smirked, leaning in to meet his lips with hers. But he froze when a sharp object passed by barely missing his nose. They whipped their heads to where it came from—a part of a forest, empty—then he turned his head to stare at the weapon. His eyebrows furrows at what he saw.

"A Joker Card?" He asked, and immediately he saw the note.

Mind your boundaries.

And they both shivered.
