It was only around noon, after the Matthews had left. Katy and Shawn were at the table, finishing up lunch with Maya busy at work in her room, not wanting to be interrupted. He joked with Katy for a moment, then a buzzing started, and Shawn saw that to his surprise, it was Corey.
"Uh, it's Corey." Shawn said to Katy, and he answered. Before he could say a single word, Topanga burst with urgency.
"Shawn, she ran out of the car. We don't know where she is! She ran INTO TRAFFIC! Oh my god-" Topanga said, with every measure of confusion and desperation heard in her words.
Shawn looked over to Katy, his face saying everything that this was serious. She returned his look with her own of immediate concern. He put her on speakerphone,
"She what?" Shawn questioned.
"Do you know where she went?" Katy joined in, as Shawn became increasingly more worried. Topanga's words hung in the air with all of their weight. INTO TRAFFIC.
"She ran back toward the apartment, but it's tight traffic out here and we easily lost sight of her. She has her bag with her too." Topanga stopped to breathe for a moment, then continued,
"She will probably go either back to your house, or our house. Morgan already left for work, so if you can, head back to your place so someone is there to intercept her. I'll go ahead of you just in case." Shawn said, and then followed,
"What else can I do?" Shawn asked. It was quickly answered;
"Get back to the house I guess. I have to sort a few other things out. Shawn, I think something happened between the girls. Can you see what you can do to figure it out? It probably has something to do with this." Katy and Shawn did not break their eye contact as they knew this was serious, and now had to plan to talk to Maya about it, that thought in the backs of their minds as the conversation finished.
"Yeah, I'll ask. Topanga, please be safe."
"Okay." She hung up, and a quiet filled the room for a moment.
They took a moment to gather thoughts, and went to it, as one of them went to speak, Gammy May called from her nearby room,
"What's wrong?" She meekly called out faintly, taking a while to finish the sentence. The eye contact between them changed, and Shawn stood up,
"I'll check, can you go talk to Maya?"
Katy got up, and reached for his hand.
"Yeah. If you need me, knock first."
The two split, Shawn to check Gammy, and Katy going to the back of the apartment where Maya's room was.
Maya was deeply engaged in her art, music of course, playing in the background. She followed the lyrics of the song playing then, Sit Down Beside Me by Patrick Watson. Mouthing along as the notes went by,
"Sit down beside me and stay awhile
Let our hearts do their parts….
How long, lady love
You couldn't talk to me now
And stay awhile
Sit down beside me and stay awhile
Till the night runs away
Till the morning rises and we part away
Till the end of our days"
The second half of the song is a thrilling and beaming percussion and winds portion. She carried with the tune, touching her tools to the work. Hearing it to the end, the next song cycled, it was Fade and Radiate by Blondie.
She is working on an easel that is tucked into the far corner of her room, at the end of her bed, she moved it after Auggie tried to sneak a peek. Gosh she would miss that kid. Maya had opted for wireless earbuds this time, so cords wouldn't get in the way of the piece. The song builds in her, through its rumbling yet wavey feel, and as it too starts to slow to finish, she sees her room light flicker. She looks up, removing an earbud to see Katy quite worriedly looking at her. Maya came out from behind her easel,
"Hey."
