This day, Saint-14 requested that Arizona come see him and Osiris, though even without the request she had been planning to come anyway. She walked into the room, into the small house that he stayed in without ever movin. When the door squeaked open, Saint turned around and waved her inside. The room was alit with an orange glow that came from a thin viel of a curtain. The thicker curtains were darker and pulled back and held away by a string that she suspected Saint found amongst the other objects that cluttered the space.
Arizona shut the door behind her. "I hope you're asking me here to keep you company, Saint." She pulled a chair up next to him, and half threw herself in it with a heavy sigh. "Looks like you haven't moved since I brought you Sagira's shell."
"I worry…" he said simply. "He does not move. We cannot know if…" His voice gave out under the burden of the last thought. She'd never really seen Saint without his helmet. It surprised her to see that he was an Exo with a white shell, and though Exo's didn't seem to show much emotion she could still see the worry in his violet eyes.
She put her hand on Saint's arm and squeezed it thoughtfully. "We can do nothing but hope sometimes, and that in itself is a hopeless feeling…isn't it?"
He nodded silently.
They listened to the sounds of silence, time hardly feeling like it passed by at all. Saint never let go of Osiris's hand, and Osiris's breathing never faltered. It was like he was asleep. "Did…anyone ever tell you how Maria and Osiris met?" He asked in a soft half-whisper.
She shook her head, "No, I never bothered to ask about their relationship. I'm sorry, but Osiris really doesn't cross my mind much. You do more than he does, and we've only spoken a few times."
"I see." He looked up to the wall pensively, seeing something in the walls that no one else could see. "It wasn't that long ago, actually. A little over two years ago. Osiris was at the Sun Dial on Mercury when she appeared. He told me Maria was confused at first, and angry. She kept claiming he was lying when he informed her, she was on Mercury. Against all odds, she traversed time, and we still do not know how."
Arizona leaned toward him, resting her arms on her knees. "Really? Then, what time was she from? What year had it been when she came…here, I guess?"
Saint shrugged, "Osiris only said she was from a time before the Traveler and before the Golden Age, an ancient past that has long been forgotten. She would not talk about it much. Whatever she left behind must have been horrible. She followed the only person she knew," he motioned to Ghost, a fondness creeping into his tone, "and she made new friends along the way, but bringing a Lightless along is dangerous. Dangerous for him and for Sagira and for her. He brought her to Ikora, promised to return for her, and left."
Arizona stared at Saint for a long while. The longer he kept silent about Osiris returning for Maria the closer her eyebrows got to each other until they touched. "And he never returned for her?"
"Sometimes he returned and brought her presents to make up for his betrayal. On one of his returns, he introduced Maria to me, and I could tell something about her was different for him." He sighed again, and his shoulders slumped. "When you-when Maria died, I grieved, and I still grieve, because I will be the one to have to tell Osiris, and his heart will be broken."
The corner of Arizona's mouth lifted ever so faintly, "It sounds like he had adopted her in some way. From the stories I've heard and read, Osiris isn't really one to bring presents for anybody. It doesn't sound like he was very...sentimental."
Saint only nodded. "Tell me about your adventures. What has our angel been up to?"
Her eyes glanced at Ghost, but the lie came naturally, "Not really anything much. Drifter asked me and Argonaut to get some stuff for him."
He shook his head, "Argonaut has already told me…about what you found on Europa. I wish you had told me as well."
"Should've known." She sighed. "Well, you know, Zavala's a bit of a prick, using me to make a point to Ikora. I don't like being used that way."
"Like what way?"
"Like a pawn in some stupid game, Saint!" She stood and began pacing the room, feeling the icy cold breath of Darkness on her fingers, but ignoring it all as she paced around Osiris's bed. "First of all, we know, and we've always known that our enemy-The Witness-uses Darkness, and his Disciples do too! Eramis. Savathun. Oryx. Xivu Arath. All of them use some semblance of Darkness, and yet we do nothing to research it further. Why? Why not get to know our enemy better? Why not use all of the tools at our disposal? The best opportunity to study Darkness that the Vanguard has had, and he wants to shy away from it! Eris Morn, she's a smart devil, she knows and has-"
Saint grabbed her arm, stopping her from pacing. "You sound just like him."
"Like who?"
He nodded toward Osiris. "Osiris used to hold Ikora's title. He became obsessed with the Vex technology and left the Vanguard. At this rate, angel, you will have the same fate. Do not let this obsession overtake you."
Arizona looked away, at Ghost, who floated by her shoulder, with his panels spinning back and forth thoughtfully. "I'm not ready for him to…I'm not ready to…let any of it go. I just want to study it freely…a little longer."
"I know."
After a few minutes of standing by Saint, Arizona sat down again, rubbing her forehead. "So, did you really call me here for company?"
He nodded, "I thought it would be good for Osiris to hear your voice."
"It sounds like you were hoping my voice would cause a miracle. Give him time to heal, Saint. We don't know how fragmented he might be."
He stared at her.
"Savathun's Hive magic could've destroyed his body…or it could have shattered his mind. There is no record of what's been done to him, so we don't know what's happened. However, I have not heard of any health issues, and nobody has raised any alarms with Ikora for any changes he may be having so…I can only assume he is trying to come back to you."
Ghost watched the two interact, almost as if nothing had changed, as if Maria hadn't died. Just as Saint and Arizona were beginning to wind themselves out of the most serious topics, Ghost felt a connection come through out of nowhere. He didn't want to interrupt, and he almost thought about ignoring the call, but it came from the Eliksni quarters.
"It's Eido." He heard a voice say.
"Arizona," he whispered, half hoping she wouldn't hear her. The two stopped laughing and looked up at him. "It's…Eido."
She nodded, "What's going on, Eido?"
"I hope I'm not interrupting anything." Eido said, almost unsure if she should've made the call in the first place.
"I'm…meeting with old friends, but that's it. What's going on?"
"Argonaut brought me the first artifact. He said you were a brilliant records keeper yourself."
Arizona rolled her eyes. "I'm not a records keeper, Eido, it sounds like he's trying to keep me occupied. I'll come and help you out still. Maybe with both of our heads together we can figure out…well whatever we need to." She turned to Saint. "Keep me posted on his condition? Whatever changes…I'd like to be here to tell him myself of what happened to Maria, that way you don't have to." She put a hand on his hand that held Osiris's. After Saint nodded, she stood and walked out.
"Who…who were you visiting, if you don't mind my asking."
"Saint-14 and Osiris."
"Oh," Eido sounded surprised. "I didn't realize you knew Osiris."
"I don't but I know Saint and he needed some company. I'll talk to you when I get back."
Ghost quickly disconnected the call. He could still feel a slight disconnection from her. When she used Stasis, or even accidentally called upon it, there was this…shadowy feel, like he was left in the shadows, and he struggled to find the one blinding Light. He didn't like the feeling.
"Ghost…would you stay with me if I left the Vanguard like Osiris?"
Ghost pressed to her cheek. "Of course. We would be like Sagira and Osiris."
Arizona laughed, "And we would be just as legendary."
