Chapter 7
Sweet 'n Sour
The following day, in the comfort of their bedroom, Buttercup's eyes narrowed as she took in the newspaper's front-page photo of herself gripping Cuddly Bunny's arm. The headline screamed, "Buttercup: Rabbit Hater?"
"Not even a mention that they were robbing a bank!" Buttercup grumbled, tossing the newspaper aside in frustration.
Blossom glanced up from her book, a playful smirk tugging at her lips. "Come on, Buttercup. Lighten up. How harmful could they really be?"
Just then, the hotline buzzed yet again, and Bubbles abandoned her jump rope to answer the call. "The Townsville Jewelry Store? We're on our way!"
Moments later, the girls burst into the jewelry store, only to gasp in astonishment.
"It's you!" Blossom exclaimed, her eyes widening. "Again!"
There they were—the Fluffy Bunch in all their larcenous glory. Puppy Wuppy, donning a regal crown, held court at the counter. Fluffy Kitty, adorned with a resplendent headpiece and a dazzling diamond necklace, lounged nonchalantly on the floor. Meanwhile, Cuddly Bunny stood across another counter, flowers nestled in her ears, as she coyly accepted a diamond ring from the beaming jewel owner.
"Is there anything else you'd like to steal?" the Jewel Owner Woman asked Puppy Wuppy, just as Buttercup swooped down and scooped him up.
"Help!" Puppy Wuppy cried, feigning terror. "Don't let her hurt me!"
"Please, take another diamond," the Jewel Owner Man implored Cuddly Bunny, slipping the ring onto her paw—right before Bubbles plucked her from the scene as well.
"Ohh, the pain!" Cuddly Bunny dramatically lamented.
Once again, a crowd of curious onlookers had gathered, their eyes shifting between the Fluffy Bunch and the Powerpuff Girls.
"Hey, look!" a man exclaimed, his voice filled with delight. "It's those adorable little animals!" His tone quickly soured as he pointed an accusing finger at the girls. "And those big, ugly Powerpuff Girls!"
Reluctantly, the Powerpuff Girls released the Fluffy Bunch, who scampered towards the sympathetic crowd.
"Please! Help us!" the Fluffy Bunch cried out in unison.
Cuddly Bunny hopped into the protective embrace of the onlookers. "Please don't let them hurt us!"
Fluffy Kitty purred contentedly as she was once again cradled in a woman's arms. "We're very, very sowwy."
Puppy Wuppy, standing on his hind legs, clung onto a man's tie, his purple eyes pleading. "We'll never do it again!"
"You're not taking them to jail, are you?" a woman asked, her voice quivering with concern.
"They don't know any better!" a man added, his tone defensive.
"They're just babies, for crying out loud!" another person exclaimed angrily.
Bubbles' voice trembled as she responded, "I'm sorry, but they have to learn their lesson!" With determination, she, Buttercup, and Blossom lifted the Fluffy Bunch into the air, soaring towards the skies as the disgruntled crowd below showered them with boos and jeers.
High above the city, the Powerpuff Girls and the Fluffy Bunch glided through the clouds, their fates now intertwined in this airborne confrontation.
"Listen here, you bug-eyed creeps," Puppy Wuppy snapped, his voice suddenly devoid of its previous whimper, "We won't last one minute in that jail!"
"Yeah! Not with our cute wittle faces," Cuddly Bunny chimed in.
"Yeah!" echoed Fluffy Kitty, just as smug as her partners in crime. "So why don't you do us all a favor and let us go meow?"
The girls exchanged a glance, then cast their eyes down toward the earth. There were no spectators here. They could get away with this, right?
"If you say so," Blossom conceded, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.
And with that, the girls relinquished their grip, sending the Fluffy Bunch plummeting from the clouds. The cute little critters screamed in terror as they fell.
"Now?" Buttercup asked nonchalantly.
"Not yet," Blossom replied coolly.
It was only when they were mere inches from the ground that the girls swooped in, plucking the Fluffy Bunch from certain doom.
"So," Blossom began, her tone light-hearted as she cradled a decidedly paler Fluffy Kitty in her arms, "what was that you were saying?"
"Uh...maybe we find a more honest gig?" Puppy Wuppy stammered.
Blossom smiled smugly. "That's what I thought."
"Why not channel all that cuteness into something more productive?" Bubbles proposed, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
"Like what?" Puppy Wuppy sneered. "Being some ridiculous mascot or something?"
"There are way more options than that," Blossom reassured.
"Yeah, you could always become the fuzzy face of some premium pet food brand or whatever." Buttercup shrugged nonchalantly.
"Or even star in television commercials," Blossom chimed in. "With your kind of cuteness, you'd have people tripping over each other to buy whatever you're selling. Plus, you'd probably rake in more cash doing that than robbing banks or jewelry stores."
Blossom knew the power of advertising well. She and her sisters were positively hooked on their favorite breakfast cereal, Lucky Captain Rabbit King Nuggets. Most of that obsession was due to the entertaining commercials, where the mascot, a cunning rabbit, always fell short of tricking the children and snagging his cherished bowl of cereal.
"And you'd be even more pampered than you already are!" Bubbles added with a giggle.
"Well..." Puppy Wuppy pondered, considering their words. The idea of a glamorous Hollywood gig didn't seem half bad...
Puppy Wuppy glanced over at his fluffy comrades, their eyes wide and thoughtful. Cuddly Bunny seemed to be considering it, her pink ears twitching in thought. Fluffy Kitty, her green eyes brighter than before, appeared intrigued.
"Y'know," Cuddly Bunny began, her voice less assertive than before, "that doesn't sound too bad."
"Maybe we could give it a try," Fluffy Kitty murmured, her feline eyes blinking slowly as if dreaming of a future filled with kitty spas and gourmet fish.
"Yeah...we could..." Puppy Wuppy trailed off. A hint of a smile began to play on his puppy lips as he started to picture himself on billboards and dog food commercials.
"But remember," Blossom warned, her tone serious but not unkind. "You'd have to promise to stay out of trouble. No more robbing banks or jewelry stores. Deal?"
The Fluffy Bunch nodded eagerly, a newfound determination sparkling in their eyes. As they were gently placed back on the ground, they huddled together, whispering excitedly about their newfound, legitimate career paths.
As the Powerpuff Girls flew off into the sunset, they couldn't help but chuckle at the strange turn of events. After all, who would've thought that a gang of cute, criminal critters would one day dream of becoming legitimate stars?
But as Blossom wisely noted, "In a city like Townsville, stranger things have happened."
And with that, another peculiar day in the life of the Powerpuff Girls came to a close. A story of redemption, reminding everyone that even the most unlikely characters could choose a path to do good.
