Chapter 2: First Trials

Some days ago

The dim lights of a strange computer flickered on in the empty room. Its complex design was unsettling, with wires snaking from its center to the floor and ceiling. Flanking the machine, two bright panels emitted an eerie neon glow that filled the space. Energy coursed through gutters lining the walls, feeding into reflective panels that amplified the light.

Suddenly, bright streaks of lightning crackled within the chamber. Accompanied by a resounding crash of thunder, they rapidly multiplied in number until an intense glow engulfed the entire space.

As the bright light faded away, a translucent figure wrapped in crackling electricity slowly took form.

The figure solidified into a man wearing ornate, old-fashioned Japanese robes. His sharp eyes shone with cunning, and his long ghostly-white hair fell to his waist. Complex mystical symbols were sewn into his robes, similar to what a sorcerer might wear in ancient times.

A malevolent laugh rumbled from deep within his chest. "Hahahahaha..."

"At last, after centuries sealed away in the distorting grasp of Makai, I'm finally free once more." He exclaimed, relishing his triumphant return. "I can scarcely believe it, but thanks to the arrival of that 'summoning program,' I've managed to experience true rebirth!"

"Its spellwork bears intriguing similarities to the mystic arts of my era, though adapted with subtle differences," he mused while surveying the advanced machinery.

"Hmm, now a pertinent question arises - does the location of my summoning relate to this advanced technology?"

Pacing pensively, he continued, "I heard rumors in Makai about 'terminals,' sophisticated devices allowing passage between this realm and the abyss."

Halting before the elaborate computer system, he scrutinized it with keen interest. "It would be foolish to assume this apparatus is not one such terminal."

"Hmm, I require knowledge to operate this advanced technology," he mused. "That matter is easily resolved. I need only survey the area and locate some hapless fool. Relieve him of memories and steal his form..."

A wicked smirk danced across his lips. "Yes, an ingenious plan worthy of my intellect. None exist as cunning as I, Ashiya Douman!"

"Once I've mastered this 'terminal,' I can finally set my long-awaited vengeance against that damned Seimei in motion," Douman declared, his words laced with venom.

"You forced my hand long ago, Abe no Seimei...compelling me to seal away a fragment of my soul in that accursed abyss," he snarled. "But soon, I shall repay your transgressions in kind! Hahahaha..."

Regaining his composure, Douman continued, "I will summon legions from the depths. Build an army to conquer this world. A simple enough endeavor for one such as I."

Douman conjured a mystical mirror, surveying the transformed cityscape. "The world has changed drastically since my era," he mused. "But that is only to be expected given the extensive time elapsed since my sealing."

He pondered deeply before continuing, "I wonder...should I seek Seimei's reincarnation for my vengeance? Or perhaps target his descendants instead?" A cruel smile danced across his lips. "Either path leads to retribution."

However, his expression soon contorted into a wrathful snarl. "Curse that wretch! The more I ponder my revenge, the clearer those humiliating memories become!"

Lost in reminiscence, Douman's mind drifted centuries back to his bitter rivalry with Seimei. In particular, he vividly recalled their final, although indirect, confrontation when Seimei had thwarted his plans most humiliatingly...

Centuries ago, in the mid-10th century, Douman stood silently before a noble client who had paid him handsomely for his mystical assassination services. But Douman had failed to eliminate the target.

They were in the noble's lavish estate. Priceless scrolls and artifacts decorated the room. The noble sat imperiously on an elegant cushion while Douman stood stiffly.

"Explain yourself, sorcerer!" the noble demanded. "Why does my enemy still draw breath when I paid you a fortune to end his life?"

Douman's eyebrow twitched slightly in irritation. "Have patience, my lord. The task proved more difficult than expected."

"More difficult?!" The noble slammed his fist on the low table. "With your vaunted skills as an onmyoji, his life should have easily been forfeit!"

Douman remained silent, weighing his next words carefully.

"Well? I await your explanation!" the noble pressed.

"...I suspect interference from Abe no Seimei," Douman finally replied.

"What! The imperial court's onmyoji? Impossible!"

"Using my magic, I dispatched a shikigami to eliminate the target," Douman explained slowly. "Yet its spirit was destroyed before completing the task. None other has the power to banish my shikigami save Seimei."

The noble paled, stammering incoherently.

Douman seized the opening. "My lord, I advise we dissolve our arrangement. I shall return your generous payment in full."

The noble's mouth opened and closed wordlessly.

"Unless you intend to battle Seimei yourself?" Douman added pointedly.

"Good heavens, no!" The noble recoiled from the thought. "If even you cannot overcome him, then no one alive in this era can match his power!"

Douman hid a sly smile. "You show wisdom beyond your years, my lord."

He turned to leave, his expression darkening once out of sight. "Accursed Abe no Seimei...one day you shall pay for this insult."

The vengeful memory stoked Douman's hatred, hands clenching into fists. "You made me a laughingstock before that influential noble...my reputation was left in tatters."

Briefly losing composure, Douman's aura manifested in a flare of power. "I eagerly await the chance to exact vengeance upon you and your lineage..."

Recomposing himself, Douman began plotting his next moves. "But first, I must conceal my identity to walk unnoticed."

Surveying the area outside, he remarked, "And I should recruit some miko to assist with ritual preparations." His gaze fixed on a passing man in medical garb. "He will serve my purposes for now. Hahaha..."

With that ominous laugh, Douman vanished, teleporting out of the strange chamber.

A quarter-hour passed as Subaru and his loyal husky, Pascal, strolled toward Inokashira Park. Subaru couldn't help but notice the many heavily armed officers stationed along the streets leading out of the neighborhood.

Casting a glance at Pascal, he remarked, "Sure looks like they're not taking chances, huh, boy?"

Pascal barked spiritedly in agreement.

Subaru hesitated briefly, gazing at the small box now in his possession. "Don't get how Stephen pinpointed my location so exactly," he mused aloud. "Mailing the COMP to my house makes sense, given that DDS-NET has my address on file. But how'd he know I'd be right here walking Pascal now?"

Exhaling, Subaru brushed his concerns aside for the moment. "No use dwelling on it. I'll explore how this thing works when we get back home."

Upon reaching the park entrance, they strolled down a tree-lined path. Before long, Pascal's keen senses detected something up ahead. Subaru's attention was soon drawn to it as well.

Before them sat an elderly man, cross-legged in the middle of the path. His flowing white beard cascaded to his chest, and elongated eyebrows gave him an air of distinction. Deeply-set eyes harbored great wisdom, while gracefully etched lines on his forehead spoke of many long years.

Garbed in tattered blue robes leaving his chest bare, his attire was disheveled with torn sleeves exposing aged arms.

'Must be that old guy Hiroto and the delivery man mentioned,' Subaru mused, cautiously approaching as Pascal maintained a vigilant stance.

Noticing the teen's arrival, the elder's gaze settled on Subaru. He flashed a gentle smile. "It seems my message found you well."

"Yeah..." Subaru responded, a hint of weariness in his tone. "I took a risk coming here, what with all the police presence. This better be important."

"Ho ho, I assure you, it's imperative we speak, Natsuki Subaru," the elder affirmed, clasping his hands together.

Subaru arched a skeptical brow before exhaling heavily. "So you already know my name. With all the supernatural insanity lately, I guess that's just par for the course now." He shook his head. "And that's putting it mildly."

The old man let out an amused chuckle. "Indeed. Please, have a seat on the ground, young one. I wish I could provide more suitable arrangements, but this lonely road will have to suffice."

Subaru just gave a nonchalant shrug before sitting cross-legged on the asphalt, Pascal lying loyally at his side.

"Natsuki Subaru, there is much we must discuss regarding your destiny. I shall be direct." The elder stroked his beard, studying Subaru intently. "Do you now grasp what must be done since awakening from that dream?"

"To be honest, just vaguely," Subaru admitted, frowning pensively. "The first time I awoke in that maze, I met peculiar beings, to say the least. A talking wall offered some insight, but frankly, old man, I can only theorize."

"What did it reveal?"

"It warned about people I'd encounter further in - Yuji and Takeshi." Subaru smiled wryly, thinking of his new friends. "Also said not to upset the balance of Law and Chaos. But oddly, it first spoke like it had expected me."

"Hmm, indeed. Firstly, you play a pivotal role regarding this world's fate," the elder explained. "More directly - you've been chosen to restore balance between the discordant forces of Law and Chaos."

Subaru listened intently as the old man continued. "Those two you met in the maze, or the 'dream world' as I call it, are also important figures. Though ultimately, for balance's sake, perhaps not to your degree."

The elder closed his eyes reflectively. "Clearly you grasp they represent two sides of the same coin."

Subaru gave a quick nod of understanding.

"Let's say Yuji embodies Law, Takeshi Chaos, while you are the neutral force keeping them balanced," the old man summarized.

"I understand the gist - spare me the tedious details for now, old man," Subaru interjected, a hint of impatience in his tone. "Just explain what's truly important."

The elder let out an amiable chuckle, stroking his beard with a nod. "Very well. If that's the case, then that matter can wait for now."

"Can't you just tell me now?" Subaru pressed, eyes narrowed.

"Patience, my boy. I shall elucidate later." The old man held up a staying hand before continuing. "Now then, I can discern you've already borne witness to the demonic presence plaguing this city."

"That's putting it mildly," Subaru scoffed, the haunting memories causing him to grimace. "Had a rather unpleasant run-in with one of those freaks yesterday. Not eager to reminisce on it."

"I see..." The elder paused thoughtfully. "This turmoil stems from collusion between the highest powers of Law and Chaos. And..." He trailed off meaningfully. "The machinations of another influential party, I suspect."

"Let me guess - might his name be Stephen?" Subaru interjected, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Ho ho, I see his 'message' has already found its way to you," the elder remarked knowingly.

"Me, a buddy from school, and probably tons more by now," Subaru confirmed, shaking his head.

"Indeed. This Stephen is quite the peculiar fellow, you see. While indifferent to cosmic balance, he endeavors to aid humanity. Though some of his 'inventions' have fallen into the wrong hands..." The old man's tone grew grim.

Subaru's eyes widened as understanding dawned. "Fantastic. So if some psycho gets that program, they can just go to town summoning whatever freaky demons they want. Great move, Stephen." His voice dripped with sarcasm.

The elder simply chuckled in response.

"So what now?" Subaru's expression was troubled. "If I'm the 'chosen one' like you say, where do I even start to fix this balance business?"

"No need to trouble yourself over that yet. For now, let fate guide your path." The old man grew solemn. "But know that soon, you shall attain power beyond even your wildest dreams."

Subaru's eyes widened in surprise. "Seriously?"

"Indeed. I believe you already sense the latent might within, no?"

"Oh, right..." Realization dawned on Subaru. "We learned to feel it in that maze, me and Yuji and Takeshi. But none of us can tap into it yet."

"Indeed, I can help awaken your inner power," the elder affirmed with a sage nod.

"You serious?!" Subaru's eyes lit up with eager anticipation.

"Yes, but first I have a couple more questions for you," the old man continued, steepling his fingers.

"Shoot," Subaru replied, giving the elder his full attention.

"Tell me your understanding of Law and Chaos. In your view, what does aligning with either philosophy entail?"

Subaru's expression grew thoughtful, conflicted. He hesitated before responding. "I'm no expert when it comes to deep philosophy or anything. But I grasp the basic ideas."

Subaru rubbed his chin contemplatively. "Law is about structure, rules, keeping everything in order for society's benefit. It sets boundaries to prevent people from going too far."

He paused, considering his next words carefully. "Chaos attracts the rebellious type who chafe under too many rules. They value total freedom even if it leads to anarchy. Basically - Law imposes order, Chaos rejects it entirely."

Subaru shrugged nonchalantly. "At least, that's my simple take on it all."

"Intriguing. While there is far more nuance, you grasp the core ideas," the elder nodded, stroking his beard contemplatively. "Now then, hypothetically - if forced to choose Law or Chaos, which would you align with? Or rather, which requires the most intervention presently?"

"I..." Subaru furrowed his brow, perplexed. "Geez, those kinds of questions are tough for me, old timer. Just a few days ago I was a shut-in gamer. My grasp of this stuff is pretty limited."

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I mean, unless you count maybe noticing some chaotic weirdness lately in my otherwise boring routine."

"Perhaps so, but even daily mundanities provide glimpses of this moral war," the old man suggested sagely. "Now, which side speaks to you at present? It may be instinctual."

Subaru pondered for a moment. "Perhaps..."

"Do not hedge - choose wisely!" the elder admonished. "Every decision bears consequences, regardless of the path taken."

"Geez, take it easy, gramps," Subaru grumbled in annoyance. "If you're forcing me, then fine - I choose neither."

The old man raised a quizzical brow. "Explain your reasoning."

Subaru sighed. "Because both sides need each other so the world doesn't go off the rails. A pure Law world means order and function sure, but total lack of freedom. People's beliefs get trampled."

He went on emphatically, "And pure Chaos? Total freedom leads the strong dominating the weak however they want. There's got to be balance."

Subaru crossed his arms resolutely. "So if you're making me pick, then neither. That's my stand."

The elder smiled approvingly. "A wise perspective - exactly as I had hoped."

"Well, keeping things balanced is the only choice for the 'chosen one', I guess," Subaru replied with a wry half-smile, eyes closed as he scratched Pascal's ears absently.

"Ho ho, even at my age one must be certain!" the elder chuckled heartily with a wink. "Now then, let's discuss unlocking your power."

Subaru nodded in agreement.

"But why not gather your friends, so we can hit three targets with one stone, as they say?" the old man suggested.

"What do you mean–"

Subaru's question was cut short as an odd sensation struck him. It was as if his perception of reality itself was shifting somehow.

As his surroundings came into focus, Subaru found himself suspended in an endless void of inky darkness. Ghostly white outlines defined his translucent hands, reminiscent of the ethereal forms he'd assumed in the prophetic maze dreams. A celestial spotlight shone down from above, bathing him in an isolated pool of radiance amidst the enveloping shadows.

"What the hell...?" he muttered, scanning his bizarre surroundings in bewilderment. Pascal was nowhere to be seen. How did he arrive in this strange realm?

Subaru quickly deduced the old man must have abruptly transported him here. 'For crying out loud, the old geezer could've at least given me a heads-up,' he thought, shaking his head.

Just then, a spectral figure began materializing within the circle of light. As it spoke, Subaru instantly recognized the tentative voice—it was Yuji.

"Huh? Where am I?" Yuji asked, clearly disoriented as he regarded their peculiar setting.

'So, the old man was serious about helping all three of us, huh?' Subaru pondered in his mind. 'Now, it seems, Takeshi is the only one left to join us.'

"Yo, Yuji! What's up?" Subaru called out lightheartedly, trying to make the best of their peculiar situation.

"Natsuki-san, is that you?" Yuji responded, still struggling to get his bearings straight. "Man, talk about unexpected. How'd we end up here again?"

"Yeah, you're telling me," Subaru replied awkwardly, scratching his head. "But hey, at least it ain't that damn maze this time. Two runs through that place was enough for me."

"Ha, no arguments there!" Yuji said with an amused chuckle. "Oh yeah, that reminds me - Yuka-san called me up earlier today. She mentioned you swung by to visit her!"

"Oh, uh, yeah that's true," Subaru said, rubbing the back of his neck a bit sheepishly. "I was hoping she could help set up a chance for us to meet in person."

"And it totally worked out perfectly!" Yuji went on eagerly. "She told me about wanting to get together with you as a neighbor. I figured right away it had to be about linking up with you, Natsuki-san!"

Yuji went on enthusiastically, "Since Yuka-san couldn't accompany me to Shinjuku today because of the police blockade, I suggested I drop by her place instead. That way, it's easier for us to meet up!"

Subaru's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, really?!"

Yuji nodded with enthusiasm. "Yeah! I was already halfway to her place on my bike when suddenly I wound up here."

Subaru smacked his forehead. 'Great, the old man snagged Yuji's soul mid-ride. What happens if his body crashes now that his spirit's gone?'

"Uh, you okay, Natsuki-san?" Yuji asked, noticing Subaru's odd reaction.

"Haha, yeah, totally fine, don't worry!" Subaru replied, waving it off.

Suddenly, Takeshi's gruff voice echoed through the space. "Yo, what the hell's going on?! Where am I?!"

"Takeshi-san?" Yuji's voice echoed in the void, a note of surprise evident as their rough-around-the-edges friend formed before them.

'Well, the gang's finally all here,' Subaru thought, holding back a grin.

"What the-?!" Takeshi sounded genuinely flabbergasted as he looked around the odd expanse. "Are you guys seeing this too?! Please tell me we didn't all just randomly black out or something."

"Uh, that's not exactly what happened..." Subaru's voice trailed off awkwardly.

Takeshi's featureless head tilted in confusion. "What're you trying to say, bro?" He scanned the bizarre environment, taking in the details. "Actually, you know what? I'd take this over that godforsaken maze any day..."

"So, you have a preference for dark, empty voids?" Yuji asked, his voice laced with amusement.

"Hell no!" Takeshi retorted, his ghostly hands balling up as if ready to take a swing.

Subaru couldn't help chuckling, the humor diffusing the tense atmosphere. His friends' banter never failed to lighten the mood.

A powerful, wise voice suddenly echoed in their minds. "Excellent, the teleportation was a success."

"What the hell?!" Takeshi exclaimed, clearly startled.

Subaru's transparent form frowned in irritation. "Not cool whisking us here without any heads up old timer," he chided.

"Wait, you know the owner of that voice, Natsuki-san?" Yuji asked, sounding puzzled.

"I was just about to explain everything once Takeshi got here, but-"

Subaru's reply was cut off by the booming voice. "Don't worry, I'll handle the explanations myself, my boy." The old man's tone held a trace of amusement.

Subaru just gave a nonchalant shrug, deciding not to argue the matter further.

"Now then, young ones," the old man began, "I'm sure you have many questions racing through your minds. But for the sake of time, let's skip introductions for the moment. I've brought you all here for an important reason."

"Of course, sir, please go on," Yuji replied politely.

"Thank you, Yuji-dono," the old man said. "Earlier I was having a discussion with Subaru at Inokashira Park. The details aren't relevant right now, but-"

"Hey, wait a sec," Takeshi suddenly interjected, "Isn't that park blocked off, Subaru? How'd you even-"

"Patience, child," the old man chided gently, making Takeshi grumble under his breath. "As I was saying, most of our talk isn't pertinent to you two at present. However, I did agree to help awaken each of your latent powers."

"Is that true?" Yuji asked, sounding intrigued.

"Ho, ho, indeed! Subaru relayed that you can sense your power, but you haven't been able to 'tap' into it, so–"

"Wait, so you're gonna teach us how to shoot fireballs or do some other crazy–" Takeshi was cut off by a good-natured smack from Yuji, which drew a chuckle from Subaru.

"Dude, what was that for?!"

"If you keep butting in, Takeshi-san, we won't get anywhere," Yuji stated, trying to keep the conversation on track.

Takeshi merely crossed his arms, falling silent.

"Now, where was I? Ah, yes!" the elder's voice picked up again. "You will all be training here in this pocket dimension with my guidance. Unfortunately, I can only maintain this space for about 40 minutes before we risk drawing unwanted attention."

"Well then, what are we waiting for!" Takeshi exclaimed, his enthusiasm palpable. "I'll–"

"Hold on, old man!" Subaru interjected. "You yanked us outta the blue in broad daylight. What's gonna happen to our physical bodies? I'm particularly worried about Yuji — the guy was on his bike!"

Upon hearing this, Yuji shivered, clearly alarmed by the implication.

"Man, that's rich hahaha," Takeshi chuckled, clearly amused by the predicament.

"You needn't worry. I've halted the perception of time for everyone in your vicinity. So when your souls return to your bodies, you'll be in the exact same spot and moment you left," the old man's voice reassured them.

"That is... ah, never mind. Yuji, you'd better have some fast reactions when you snap back to reality," Subaru added with a note of concern.

Yuji could only respond with a nervous nod.

"Very well, young ones, let's get started. Time is of the essence, as they say."

The three friends shared a nod of agreement.

"First, I want you to feel the flow of your power."

"So, we gotta meditate like we did last time?" Takeshi asked, looking for clarification.

"Seems like it. C'mon now, let's not waste any more time; I've already shown you both the ropes," Subaru urged.

"Alright, fine."

In the black void of the dimension, they settled into a lotus position. After a few moments, they began to sense the flow of their latent power coursing through their spiritual forms. In more familiar terms, it felt like a warm and foreign sensation washing over them.

"This is so calming..." Yuji murmured, sounding relaxed. "Just like last time, it feels like..."

"We can do anything? Hell yeah," Takeshi added, finishing his sentence.

"Yeah, it's quite exhilarating..." Subaru agreed.

"Hmm, indeed. You three possess immense potential," the old man mused. "This innate power can be molded in certain ways. Most commonly, it's used to enhance your physical capabilities beyond human limits. Alternatively, it can manifest as 'magic' - altering reality itself."

"What should we try awakening first?" Subaru inquired.

"An excellent question," the old man replied. "Since magic requires extensive knowledge of incantations and metaphysics to warp reality, we'll begin by augmenting your physical attributes. Channel your energy into strength, speed, agility - that sort of thing."

"Aw yeah, super strength and all that jazz?!" Takeshi blurted out eagerly.

"Ho ho, yes indeed," the old man chuckled. "But maintain your meditation, child."

"Oh shoot, my bad," Takeshi said, refocusing himself and earning some amused chuckles from his friends.

"Now, to manifest your power, you must associate it with something meaningful," the old man explained. "Whatever resonates most profoundly within you."

The three friends absorbed his words thoughtfully.

'Something meaningful...' Subaru reflected. Memories of his mother and Pascal came to mind...his newfound friendships... He thought back to how detached his life had become after his father vanished. But since the dreams, he was determined to change. He wanted to make his mother proud and protect her.

Takeshi's mind churned with potential associations, but one burned brightest - hatred for Ozawa. Though cryptic, he knew this destiny was real after meeting Yuji and Subaru. He would tap this power to finally confront Ozawa. That driving fury would fuel him.

Yuji felt similar conviction following the vivid dreams. This was surely a message, bestowing him power to protect dear Yuka and aid his new friends. Perhaps even God himself was granting this gift to uphold justice. Yuji would devote himself to serving the greater good - this would be his inspiration.

Faint outlines of aura began flickering into existence around their white, spectral forms. The nascent energy pulsed weakly at first, wavering in and out of focus.

"You're making progress, but must steel your resolve further to manifest the energy properly," the old man urged. "Keep concentrating - 30 minutes remain."

The friends continued their silent meditation, losing themselves in contemplation as they focused on coaxing their latent power into being.

The scene shifts to an ornately decorated office, where Japanese ink paintings depicting prominent military figures line the walls. Seated at an elegant desk before a broad window is Chief of Staff Kazuki Murakami, sorting through confidential documents bearing the official seal.

A closer look reveals these files contain disturbing reports on escalating demonic activity across Tokyo - sightings in Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Kichijoji on the rise.

"Dear Kami, what a mess..." Kazuki mutters under his breath, rubbing his temples wearily. Despite the police force's best efforts at downplaying the incidents, the situation seems poised to spiral out of control.

With a heavy sigh, Kazuki sets the final dossier aside just as a knock echoes at the door. "Come in," he calls out, steeling himself.

The door opens and a western man with some japanese features strides in, clad in a sleek black suit resembling attire worn by US government agents. With messy brown hair and piercing blue eyes, his features distinctly contrast the ornate Japanese decor.

"Hey, Kazuki, how's it going?" he greets casually.

Kazuki's eyes light up in pleasant surprise. "Brian-san?! What brings you here, my friend? Please, have a seat!"

"Thank you," Brian replies, settling into the chair across from Kazuki's desk.

"Can I get you anything? Coffee perhaps?" Kazuki offers congenially.

"Water's fine, thanks," Brian responds with an easygoing smile.

Kazuki nods and steps over to the water dispenser, fetching a plastic cup which he fills and brings to his visitor.

After handing Brian the water, Kazuki reclaims his own seat at the desk. "Now then, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit today?"

Brian takes a sip of water, his piercing blue eyes fixed intently on Kazuki. "I'll get right to the point. I just flew in from D.C. yesterday. The higher-ups in Washington already know about the demon outbreaks here."

"W-what?" Kazuki looks startled. "But how is that possible?"

"We've got that slippery son of a bitch Thorman to thank," Brian reveals grimly. "Somehow he caught wind of it."

"But our government has done everything to contain this!" Kazuki protests. "No information was meant to reach foreign powers, let alone the public."

"No clue how he found out. But that Thorman gives me the creeps," Brian continues. "He's too damn mysterious. Unless..." His eyes narrow slightly.

"Impossible!" Kazuki interjects. "I cannot believe we have a traitor among us. Although..." He pauses, looking conflicted. "Colonel Gotou has been acting odd lately. But surely not even he would leak to the likes of Thorman. Gotou is far too nationalistic for that."

Brian nods gravely. "But the real kicker is this...I managed to overhear the Defense Secretary and Thorman talking." He hesitates before continuing. "They're planning a full-scale invasion here with ground troops. The President, Congress, everyone's in on it now."

"T-That's outrageous!" Kazuki exclaims. "They can't just invade without a formal meeting or declaration of war!"

"I know, just try to stay calm," Brian urges. "Look, you know my background. I was born here in Japan. America's only my home on my father's side." His tone grows resolute. "I don't want anything bad happening to the country I consider home. I aim to help however I can."

"But Brian-san, that would mean deserting your own nation..." Kazuki says uneasily.

"This is my nation," Brian states firmly. "I lived here until my mother passed away and my dad took me to the States. But Japan's still my true home, and I'll defend it."

"Brian-san..." Kazuki begins, clearly moved.

"Hey now, don't get all sentimental on me," Brian interjects with a roguish yet kind grin. "You're not a kid anymore, right?"

Kazuki chuckles, a smile crossing his face. "Hai!" His expression grows firm with resolve. "You can count on my full support in this matter! My authority only goes so far, but there is something we can do."

Brian nods. "We'll need to plan a covert infiltration op at Thorman's ambassy here in Shinjuku. Get some intel without tipping them off."

Brian's expression hardens as he steeples his fingers. "We need hard evidence, and fast. Something solid to expose that bastard Thorman to your government." His eyes glint with determination. "We're gonna make that slippery son of a bitch pay."

"Good. I can get some of my top men involved, and I know others who can—"

Kazuki's strategizing is interrupted as the office door suddenly swings open.

"What the—" Brian blurts out in surprise.

A stern-faced man with a severe military crew cut stalks inside, clad in an ornate uniform befitting his senior rank. Two soldiers flank him before he orders curtly, "You two, wait outside. And shut the door."

"Sir!" They snap a crisp salute then quickly comply, pulling the door closed.

"Colonel Gotou?!" Kazuki exclaims. "What's the meaning of this interruption?"

Gotou's gaze sweeps the room, settling scornfully on Brian. "Hmph. So this mongrel friend of yours is here too. Then you must be a traitor as well."

"Just what are you implying?" Kazuki demands.

"Nothing. In fact, this will make things easier," Gotou replies cryptically.

"Gotou, what are you—"

"Silence!" Gotou snarls. "Who gave you permission to address me so casually, mongrel scum?"

Brian flinches slightly before steeling himself, fixing Gotou with a sharp glare.

Gotou shifts his attention to Kazuki. "Sir—no, Murakami Kazuki—as of this moment, you will relinquish command of the Ichigaya troops to me."

"What?!" Kazuki exclaims in shock. "This is mutiny, Colonel!"

Gotou simply scoffs. "Mutiny? Hardly. The majority of the men support me, especially the younger ranks. They want you out."

"But why?!" Kazuki demands.

"I know everything," Gotou states, pointing an accusatory finger at Brian. "Your government's plans."

Brian scoffs. "You've got it all wrong. I already deserted the moment I landed at the airport this morning. You can stick your nationalism up your ass."

Gotou looks contemplative for a moment. "Oh? So you'll help us save... Japan?" His expression morphs into a twisted grin. "Ha...hahaha...hahahaha!"

Kazuki and Brian exchange confused glances as Gotou's laughter echoes ominously through the office.

"Ah, so you know 'everything' the US is planning here then?" Gotou questions mockingly.

"Just the ground invasion part," Brian replies tersely. "I was about to plan an infiltration op with Kazuki at Thorman's embassy. We need evidence of their intentions to expose it all."

"I see...then you don't know everything after all," Gotou states cryptically.

"What are you getting at?" Kazuki demands.

Gotou's expression darkens. "Thorman convinced the President a troop invasion would fail. So instead, he's compelled them to launch ICBMs - 10 megatons at least."

Kazuki's eyes widen in disbelief, shock rendering him momentarily speechless.

Brian's scowl deepens. "Bullshit!" he snaps. "You've gotta be bluffing."

"Oh, it's no bluff," Gotou replies, an icy edge in his tone. "After Thorman convinced the President how powerful the demons could become, authorization for the nukes was granted."

Brian's fists clench. "Then why haven't they launched yet? And how the hell did you get that intel? I had access from my White House contacts, but you?"

Gotou pauses, considering for a moment before sighing. "Well, I suppose there's no harm in telling you now..."

He steps closer to one of the ink paintings, gazing thoughtfully. "I met a man about a week ago. Quite peculiar, actually."

Kazuki and Brian watch him intently, apprehension rising.

"He never gave his name. But he provided all the intel I needed...and more." Gotou's tone grows ominous.

Brian's fists clench in frustration. "Cut the cryptic shit. Get to the damn point!"

Gotou merely chuckles. "My, the half-breed is getting demanding now..." His gaze shifts from the painting to Brian, eyes narrowed dangerously.

Brian doesn't flinch, but beads of sweat form on Kazuki's brow. Gotou's threatening aura permeates the room.

Recomposing himself, Gotou continues, "This man revealed truths to me. That all mythological beings - demons, gods - they're real."

Gotou chuckles mirthlessly. "Amusing, considering I was skeptical about the demon outbreaks myself." His expression hardens. "But just a glimpse of proof was all I needed. Like this."

He waves a hand, and a dazzling swirl of particles coalesces next to him. Kazuki and Brian stare in astonishment at the form materializing - the head of a monkey, body of a raccoon dog, tiger limbs, and a snake's tail.

"This," Gotou declares, hand outstretched toward the bizarre creature, "is but one example he showed me."

"Sweet Jesus..." Brian utters in stunned disbelief. "That's a real goddamn demon."

"A N-Nue..." Kazuki stammers, eyes wide. "Like in the old legends..."

Gotou nods. "Since then, I've honed my mastery over them. I can summon and dismiss them with ease." He waves his hand again, the Nue vanishing instantly.

Brian and Kazuki stand paralyzed in awe and fear.

Gotou's smirk widens into a predatory grin. "What's the matter? Too stricken with fear to even speak?" He pauses for a moment, savoring their shocked expressions. "After granting me these powers, that man revealed the full extent of Thorman and the western invaders' plans to me."

Gotou begins pacing around the room imperiously. "In fact, Thorman is actually..." He bursts into sudden laughter. "Hahaha! Ha...hahahaha!"

Kazuki and Brian exchange wary glances at his outburst.

Gotou composes himself, though a twisted grin remains. "My apologies, it's just too absurd...Thorman is the god Thor himself in disguise! Can you believe it?"

"W-what?!" Brian stammers in disbelief.

"There's more. This mysterious benefactor revealed God's new plan - cleansing the world's 'sinners' in a catastrophe, just as in Noah's time." Gotou's tone chills. "The apocalypse is nigh."

"This is insane..." Kazuki mutters, stunned.

Gotou chuckles again at the absurd alias. "The gods of Law and Order now serve the almighty Yahweh. Thor is but an agent sent to wipe out Japan."

"Why Japan?" Brian questions indignantly. "None of this makes any damn sense!"

"It doesn't have to for chess pieces like us," Gotou states, his amusement fading. "But no more. This mysterious benefactor granted me power not just to shield Japan from God's machinations, but to ensure its people remain free - not puppets of some divine tyrant."

Gotou's eyes burn with conviction. "The time has come for humanity to cast off these shackles and seize our own destiny!"

"Gotou..." Kazuki says, voice taut with apprehension. "How can you be so blindly certain this man isn't just another tyrant seeking a marionette?" His words slice through the tense air. "Twisting your devotion to Japan for his own agenda?"

Gotou's face contorts, eyes flashing dangerously. "And what was I to do instead?" he seethes. "Refuse, leaving Japan helpless as gods twiddle thumbs? Or let inaction damn us to nuclear fire?" His fists clench, knuckles whitening. "I took the power offered and chose to fight!"

"You lost your goddamn mind!" Brian's guttural roar pierces the room's oppressive aura. "We fight these threats as humans! Not toss away our souls for power like some Faustian devil's bargain!"

Gotou whirls on him, eyes blazing with icy fury. "Hold your tongue, mongrel. The new dawn won't suffer your kind." His arctic stare turns on Kazuki, rooted in place. "Or indecisive cowards without the resolve to do what's necessary. Only the strong-willed will survive what's to come."

Gotou's whistle splits the air. Soldiers burst in, weapons ready. "Enough. It's time to purge the rot before it spreads."

Brian and Kazuki jerk their pistols out, eyes wide with alarm.

Unfazed, Gotou's order slashes the tense air. "Execute the mongrel. The ex-chief may still prove of use." Assault rifles snap up, trained unflinchingly on Brian.

Kazuki's jaw clenches, steeling himself. "Gotou...do you grasp the magnitude of this betrayal?" he grates out through clenched teeth. His knuckles bleach bone-white around the pistol grip.

"All I know is Japan needs my iron will to endure the coming fire," Gotou states, tone arctic. "With the half-breed removed, you'll await your purpose in the cell I've prepared." A malicious undercurrent seeps into his voice. "Martial law will pave the way for this nation's salvation!"

Gotou's face twists into a maniacal smirk. "Fire!"

With blinding reflexes, Brian fires first, headshotting both soldiers before they can pull their triggers.

Kazuki stares, stunned. "B-Brian, that was incredible! Amazing aim!"

Brian flashes a grin. "All those years as a US agent paid off." He turns to Gotou, expression hardening. "Surrender now, or summon your demon and try to escape. Your choice."

Gotou just sneers unfazed. "A pity those weaklings fell so easily. To answer your demand - I needn't waste magnetite on the likes of you."

"Magnetite?" Brian questions, brow furrowing.

Gotou's lips twist into a malevolent smirk. "I neglected to mention...that benefactor didn't just enable control over demons." His eyes flash ominously. "I'm becoming one."

"What?!" Brian and Kazuki exclaim in perfect unnerved unison.

The lights strobe erratically as the room convulses, seized by some unfathomable force. A swirling miasma the color of fresh blood coalesces around Gotou. Bulging veins writhe beneath his skin like live wires as his frame contorts, muscles swelling grotesquely.

"What the hell is happening?!" Brian's panicked shout barely penetrates the quaking din.

Kazuki can only shake his head, eyes impossibly wide.

"Shoot the bastard down! Now!" Brian bellows over the deafening rumble.

Grim understanding reflected in his tense nod, Kazuki raises his pistol alongside Brian's. Bullets buck wildly off the undulating aura enveloping Gotou.

"No! It can't be!" Brian screams in frustrated dismay above the mind-rending cacophony. Kazuki stares wordlessly, features frozen in abject horror.

Then Gotou unleashes a primal, inhuman roar that shatters eardrums as he throws back his freakishly swollen limbs. A staggering shockwave of raw power detonates through the office, ripping apart the very air. The explosion vaporizes clouds beyond the base's perimeter.

Outside, soldiers' eyes bulge as rubble and debris rain down in a hellish cascade. They dive desperately for what meager cover they can find across the ravaged base.

"The boss unleashed that power?" one barely shouts over the apocalyptic din.

"Move in, now!" comes the panicked order.

Coughing violently, Brian drags himself up from the devastation. "Kazuki! You still breathing?!" His cry is raw, hoarse.

With a pained heave, Kazuki shoves away a slab of crumbling concrete and lurches unsteadily to his feet. "I'll live..." he grates out, voice leaden with anguish.

Brian's lip curls in a wrathful snarl. "Bastard turned himself into a freakin' monster!"

As smoke trails away, Gotou's hulking, misshapen form comes into horrifying focus - shirtless, veins bulging savagely under tumorous mounds of muscle. A flickering blood-red aura briefly outlines him before evaporating.

"Behold...just a fraction of the power I now wield to save Japan from God's pathetic schemes!" Gotou's voice booms, each word dripping with malevolence.

Brian's lips peel back in a ferocious snarl. "You've gone utterly insane, Gotou."

Gotou's mouth twists into a cruel, mocking sneer. "Time to die, mongrel." His pitiless gaze slides to Kazuki. "As I said, your life will be spared on a whim. For now."

"YOU–" Kazuki's enraged cry is abruptly silenced as Gotou extends a massive palm. Invisible forces slam Kazuki brutally against unforgiving concrete. He slumps to the ground, knocked senseless.

"KAZUKI!" Brian's anguished scream seems to echo endlessly across the ravaged compound.

"Now..." Gotou's voice rumbles ominously as he teleports before Brian with blinding, superhuman speed.

Brian turns his head leadenly, the world slowing to an agonizing crawl. His gaze meets Gotou's malevolent crimson eyes. Brian's been brushed with death before, but this paralyzing stillness feels far more harrowing than any previous brush with oblivion.

"See you in hell, mongrel." Gotou's thunderous blow obliterates Brian's body. Flesh and organs erupt in a gruesome spray, spattering the rubble-strewn walls and floor like a ruptured balloon, viscera scattering in a graphic display of mutilation.

Crimson rain patters down. Gotou's arm remains frozen in place from the lethal blow, face obscured in malevolent shadow.

Kazuki stirs, eyes crawling open. The nightmarish scene hits him like a gut punch.

"N-no...B-Brian-san..." he chokes out between racking sobs. "Brian-san, Brian-san, Brian-san..." His raw scream rends the air. "BRIAN-SAN!"

Gotou inhales deeply, unfazed by the anguished cries. With chilling poise he clasps his hands behind his back, rain fading as he towers over the devastation.

Kazuki weeps, frame wracked with anguish. Brian was like a brother—now a husband and father lost, his family left to grieve futilely. Only fury and devastation remain in the hollow void.

Gotou's lip curls derisively. "Cease your pathetic sniveling. I did that mongrel a favor with a quick, clean death."

Kazuki's head creeps up, eyes smoldering with rage. "You...you MONSTER!" The mangled cry shreds his throat. "How DARE you!"

Gotou's eyes slit malevolently. "How dare I? Fool. This is but a taste of the coming world where only the strongest survive—thriving as the weak are crushed underfoot."

"You won't get away with this, Gotou..." Kazuki growls, rivulets of blood dripping from his brow. "Mark my words...just as you gained these powers, someone will rise to stop you. You won't fucking get away with this!"

Gotou's eyes slit with icy contempt. "Silence, Kazuki. I've heard enough prattle while under your command." His tone seethes with frigid malice. "For now, rest. You'll awaken grateful for your accommodations."

"Fuck you," Kazuki spits venomously.

Gotou's eyes flare crimson. Kazuki's world goes black, his body crumpling to the cold, unforgiving ground.

"That will suffice for now." Gotou surveys the devastation, dust pluming around him. "Mere fractions of this power have freed me from all human constraints."

His gaze flicks to the doorway as soldiers scramble through the mangled steel and rubble.

"Sir!" The lieutenant snaps a crisp salute, boots crunching over shattered glass. "We mobilized the instant this wing imploded."

Gotou inclines his head. "Casualties from the debris?"

"None, sir!" The lieutenant scans his tablet, brows furrowed. "But seismic monitors detected shockwaves resonating through Shinjuku. Magnitude 4, sir."

"I see." Gotou's tone brooks no argument. "Well done. Now remove this pathetic whelp to his cell. And clean up this mess."

"Yes sir!" The soldiers spring into action.

Gotou's thoughts turn inward as he strides from the ravaged building. 'I will not fail you, my country. The old gods loyal to our land must aid me.' His piercing eyes sweep the open sky. 'No matter the cost, our people will endure.'

The pocket dimension was only meant to last 40 minutes total. But Subaru and his friends had started meditating 10 minutes after arriving, leaving them just 30 minutes left to tap into their powers.

As the seconds ticked by, the trio sank deeper into meditation, guided patiently by the wise old man. Thanks to his sage advice, they managed to awaken their latent abilities at the last possible moment. Subaru associated his newfound power with protecting his loved ones, especially his mom. For Yuji, it meant fulfilling his sense of justice and helping others. As for Takeshi, it was all about gaining strength to get revenge. Oblivious to their success, the friends kept meditating intensely.

"Outstanding work, young ones!" The old man praised warmly, his voice swelling with encouragement. "Your exceptional spirits have allowed you to progress awesomely...yes indeed!"

"We're really thankful for your guidance, sir," Yuji replied politely, ever the model student.

"Hey gramps, I gotta ask ya something," Takeshi spoke up impatiently, still focused on his own goals.

"And what might that be, hmm?" The old man inquired, sounding amused.

"I'm no idiot...hell, sometimes I can be dense," Takeshi grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck in frustration. "But ever since that second freaky maze dream, I've known I'm tangled up in some weird fate stuff...ya get what I'm sayin'?"

"I'm with Takeshi-san," Yuji chimed in. His voice remained calm, yet intrigued curiosity shone through. "That first dream just seemed like a really intense lucid dream at the time. My interactions with Natsuki-san and Takeshi-san felt totally surreal, so I kinda just rolled with it, you know?"

Yuji's tone grew more thoughtful as he reflected deeply. "But after the second identical dream, I realized something way bigger was at play here...like destiny itself was connecting us somehow."

Subaru listened intently, arms crossed, as his friends spoke. The old man had already revealed Subaru's pivotal role in all this. Hell, even before that fateful reveal, Subaru grasped something supernatural was up after the chilling encounters with Yuriko and witnessing that demon devour a man. His friends deserved to know about their shared destiny too.

Subaru opened his mouth to speak, but the old man's sage voice rang out first, echoing through the endless void. "Yes, the three of you share an intertwined fate, connected to Subaru's destiny." He let his words hang in the air for a moment, allowing the implication to fully sink in. "But the details, at least for the two of you, are unimportant for now...and for some very good reasons."

Subaru grimaced internally as speculative thoughts raced through his mind. Was it perhaps because of Yuji and Takeshi's opposing natures? Will they end up in fatal conflict later on? So many possibilities swirled in Subaru's head, but for now, he decided to keep his concerns to himself.

"C'mon, gramps, just spill it already—" Takeshi's complaint died on his lips as the old man's disembodied voice chided gently.

"Patience, my boy. All shall be explained in due time," the old man assured, a glint of amusement permeating his tone. "For now, merely five minutes remain. Yet it seems you've already awakened your powers, ho ho!"

The three friends exchanged puzzled glances, confusion evident on their ethereal faces. "Huh?"

Chuckling softly, the old man's voice elaborated further, "So engrossed were you in meditation that your success eluded your notice...but your auras have already unlocked, granting access to your newly awakened abilities." His voice swelled with warm encouragement as he continued. "Go on, test yourselves while time remains. Focus your minds inward and expand the glow of your auras."

With a resigned sigh, Subaru rallied his friends, determination steeling his voice. "Come on, let's do this, guys!"

Takeshi and Yuji exchanged a firm, resolved nod at Subaru's urging. Together, the trio closed their eyes and turned their focus deep within, concentrating intensely on calling forth the latent power thrumming through their souls.

This time, vibrant auras blazed into existence around their ethereal forms, glowing with intensity rather than flickering weakly. Each aura pulsed with a distinct hue reflecting the core of their beings.

Subaru's aura flared a radiant gold, encapsulating his fated role - to maintain perfect balance between opposing forces. Though calm at his core, the fiery shroud embodied the steadfast spirit burning within.

Yuji's aura manifested as a serene celestial blue, exuding a tranquil yet firm essence. It exemplified his lawful spirit and unwavering drive to uphold justice.

Takeshi's seared a fiery, chaotic crimson, laying bare his fierce craving for unrestrained power and total freedom.

As the trio slowly opened their eyes, the surging energy suffused their souls, elevating their attributes leagues beyond mortal limits.

Predictably, Takeshi erupted first, unable to contain his exhilaration. "Holy shit!" he bellowed, voice booming with excitement. "I feel so damn agile and freakin' strong!"

Flexing his legs, Takeshi rocketed skyward in an astounding leap, momentarily defying gravity's pull. Hanging impossibly high in the air, he hollered down to his awestruck friends, "Damn, did you see that?! I jumped like 30 freakin' stories high!"

"Damn, that's freaking amazing!" Subaru remarked, clearly pumped by the exhilarating rush of power surging within his spiritual form. "I can feel it too... How about you, Yuji?"

"Yeah!" Yuji exclaimed, eyes wide with awe and wonder. "So this was the incredible power we had lying dormant within us all along...just unbelievable!"

Like Takeshi, Subaru tested his newfound power, unleashing a blistering flurry of punches and kicks at blinding speed. Even as a shut-in, he'd somehow kept up martial arts practice when possible. "I just busted out 50 punches and kicks in a single second!" he exclaimed.

"That's truly incredible, Natsuki-san! I never knew you practiced martial arts," Yuji remarked, clearly impressed.

"Heh, yeah..." Subaru explained somewhat sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I've been training in karate since I was a kid. Still find myself going through the motions now and then after all these years." He exuded a grin in his voice. "Anyway, Yuji, wanna show us what you can do with these insane powers?"

The composed Yuji nodded. "I'd like to test my new speed capabilities..." Focusing the energy into his legs, he took off, blurring into astonishing superhuman velocity. In mere seconds, he effortlessly circled around Takeshi and Subaru's spectral forms in a blink.

"Whoa, check him out!" Takeshi exclaimed, letting out an impressed whistle at the usually reserved Yuji's sudden power display.

Skidding to an abrupt stop before his friends, residual speed still swirling around his ethereal form, Yuji remarked in awe, "This is unbelievable...I used to run track in school...to have this kind of freedom now!"

"Hell yeah! These freaking powers are insane! I can't wait to see how much stronger we can get!" Takeshi bellowed, his voice booming with exhilaration. "Ain't that right, Subaru?"

"For sure, let's push this to the limit," Subaru agreed, eyes blazing with anticipation.

Around them, the infinite void trembled, fracturing into shards of light as the dimension neared collapse.

The old man's sage voice echoed through the crumbling void. "I am gladdened to see you reveling in these newfound sensations and powers. From this point forward, it shall depend on each of you on how to wield your abilities responsibly." His tone swelled with purpose. "Now, as this realm disintegrates, you are ready to commence the second phase of your training."

"Second phase?" Subaru asked, confusion swirling around his spectral form. "You didn't mention anything about that!"

"Yeah, for real - what's this about?" Takeshi chimed in. "Aren't we supposed to snap back to reality after this?"

"G-guys, please, let's let him explain first," Yuji stammered nervously, a tremor in his voice.

"Ho ho, it's quite alright," the old man assured. "I merely wish to observe how you fare with these newfound powers against a worthy opponent. As such, I shall transport you to a place where demonic energy has recently surged powerfully."

"So our very first trial, huh?" Subaru's voice swelled with a palpable mix of nerves and excitement.

"Indeed!" the old man confirmed. "Tell me, do any of you know of the Echo building located in your neighborhood?"

"Yeah, I know that place. It's just a few blocks down from my apartment," Takeshi replied.

"Correct!" The old man's voice took on a grave tone. "A few days past, the building was abruptly shut down under mysterious circumstances. This occurrence is attributed to a dark presence...one that has emerged from the shadowy depths of Makai."

"Isn't that the demon world?" Subaru said, prompting Yuji and Takeshi to stare at him. Realizing this, Subaru just added sheepishly, "Ah, hahaha, I had too much free time as a shut-in...so I kinda learned about this stuff..."

Chuckling, the old man replied. "Quite correct, my boy!" The dimension started to shatter violently around them, startling the friends. Before they could panic, the old man spoke in a calm tone. "Now, now, don't worry. Brace yourselves, for I shall teleport you directly to the entrance hall of the building."

Nodding in unison, the translucent friends steadied their energies. Their spectral forms dematerialized from the crumbling dimension.

"Whoa, that was fast," Takeshi remarked, glancing around the entrance hall.

"Yeah..." Subaru paused, struck by an idea. "Oi, old man! Do we gotta search the whole building to find this monster? Or can we sense its energy like in Dragon Ball?"

Yuji and Takeshi burst into hearty laughter at the reference.

The old man's voice rumbled, "Ah, quite right, I apologize for the oversight. If you focus your minds, you should be able to detect nearby energy sources, be they demonic or otherwise."

"I can try sensing energy signatures!" Yuji exclaimed, focusing intently. "If I search for power as we felt in ourselves, maybe I can..."

He trailed off, his tone betraying a hint of insecurity. "...I...I think I found it, but..."

"What's up, dude? Didja locate their 'ki'?" Takeshi asked mockingly.

Subaru punched his shoulder playfully.

"Y-Yeah, but...it's so powerful, I'm not sure we can handle it," Yuji said uneasily.

"We gotta at least try! And if things go south, gramps will bail us out just as he said, riiiight?" Subaru drew out the last word, directing it at the disembodied voice.

"Of course!" the old man reassured. "Proceed, young ones. I shall observe your battle closely."

"Mhm," Subaru nodded. "What's its exact location?"

"The sixth floor, Natsuki-san. There are other energy signals clustered around it too."

"More demons, eh? That's fine by me, I'll shred 'em apart! Time to 'really' test this new power!"

"Let's not waste time then," Subaru declared, sprinting for the highest floor with his friends flanking him.

"Man, my heart's racin'! I'm itchin' to start crackin' heads already!" Takeshi bellowed.

Subaru couldn't help but tease, "What's with the sudden change of dialect, dude?"

Takeshi opened his mouth to reply, but before he could say anything, Yuji chimed in with a sly comment, "Takeshi-san sounds quite spirited with that colorful language."

"Hey! Nothin' wrong with some slang now and then, bros!" Takeshi shot back."

"Certainly not, I simply felt compelled to note it," Yuji replied amiably.

"We're close now, just one floor left," Subaru interjected, focusing their attention.

The trio continued climbing the stairs with resolve, the swirling demonic energy just beyond a doorway at the hall's end.

Suddenly, Subaru stopped short, prompting Yuji and Takeshi to halt and peer at him in confusion.

"Yo, Subaru, what's up?" Takeshi asked.

"Is everything alright, Natsuki-san?" Yuji inquired with concern.

There before Subaru, though unseen by his companions, stood Naoko - her features far more vivid than their spectral forms.

'W-What the hell...' Subaru mused in shock.

"Subaru, please, don't go on ahead!" she pleaded, face etched with intense worry.

"M-Mom...? What - how are you here?" Subaru stammered in disbelief.

His friends glanced around bewildered, unable to discern the apparition.

"Dude, I think you're hallucinating pretty hard," Takeshi said uneasily.

"It's too dangerous ahead! I can't stand the thought of losing you too, son..." Naoko's form flickered but her worry felt real.

"Mom...I-I..." Subaru's mind raced, confused about what was happening. Illusion or truth?

Yuji approached and touched his shoulder. "Natsuki-san, what's wrong?"

"I...I think I'm seeing some kind of apparition...of my mom," Subaru managed to say.

"What? Why can't we see her?" Takeshi asked before Yuji quickly elbowed him.

"Shh, Takeshi!" Yuji hissed under his breath. Takeshi grumbled, rubbing his side.

Ignoring their exchange, Subaru kept his focus fixed on Naoko's apparition. It was just too real - her voice, appearance, everything was exactly as he remembered from before going to the mall with Pascal.

"Mom...is it really you? But how did you get here?" he asked softly.

"I'm...not sure," she replied hesitantly. "Just before, I felt so tired while waiting for you at home. I must have dozed off on the couch. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in this strange place. And at the same time, I sensed your presence, Subaru."

"You did?"

Naoko nodded gently. "A mother can always feel their child, no matter how far apart we are!" Her expression darkened. "But that door ahead...it gives me a terrible feeling. I don't know how we're here, but please, don't go through!"

Takeshi's opened his mouth to interrupt again but was cut off by Yuji's arm abruptly wrapped around his neck in a playful headlock.

"C'mon man, let go!" Takeshi complained, his body squirming fruitlessly against Yuji's grip.

Yuji just seemed to grin, tightening his hold around Takeshi's blank head. "Shush and let them talk!"

Takeshi grumbled wordlessly, still trapped in Yuji's clutches.

"Mom...this is hard to explain," Subaru began hesitantly, ignoring his friends' antics.

"What trouble have you gotten yourself into this time, my dear?" Naoko asked, her voice laced with concern.

"I don't even know where to start," Subaru admitted. "So much has happened in just a couple days. I've changed. I'm not the same person I was." He took a deep breath. "I need to go through that door up ahead. As crazy as it sounds, I have to do this."

"I think I understand," Naoko said softly. "This has to do with you finally leaving your room, doesn't it?" She smiled knowingly, her eyes glimmering.

Subaru was silent for a few moments before replying. "Yeah...I didn't tell you everything because, well, you know how crazy it would've sounded." He sighed, shoulders slumping. "So much unbelievable stuff has been happening."

Naoko shook her head gently. "It's alright, dear. And you know, since that morning, I can see it - that same fire of determination in your eyes that your father had." She paused thoughtfully.

"I don't mean to compare you to him. You're becoming your own man, Subaru. But I recognize that same steadfast spirit burning within you now."

Naoko's eyes grew misty. "Just promise me one thing - that you'll come back alive."

Subaru met her earnest gaze and nodded firmly. "I promise I'll come back to you, Mom. Don't worry. When I return, I'll show you how awesome I've become!"

Naoko's eyes swelled with pride. "I know you will. I'll be waiting, always." Her voice cracked with emotion. "Subaru, I'm so very proud of the man you're growing into. Your father would be too."

As Naoko's apparition slowly faded, her parting words rang clearly. "I love you with all my heart, my precious son."

As she faded completely from view, Subaru lowered his gaze, eyes glistening with unshed tears. If not for his translucent form, they would have been visible, trailing down his cheeks. He clenched his fist tightly and looked ahead with determination toward the looming doorway.

"We could only hear your side of things, but it seemed to end well, right?" Yuji asked gently.

"Yeah...it did," Subaru replied, his voice tinged with emotion.

"What did she say, dude?" Takeshi asked. "You don't have to tell us if you don't want to."

"She was just worried about me, that's all," Subaru said in a hushed tone. "I still don't know who or what brought her consciousness here...We'll have a long talk when I get back."

"I'm sure it'll be okay," Yuji reassured. "I may not know her, but any good mother would already understand and support you."

"Thank you, Yuji. That means a lot," Subaru expressed sincerely. He took a deep breath before continuing, "Now, let's not waste any more time. Are you guys ready?" He pumped his fist, resolve renewed.

"Hell yeah, let's do this!" Takeshi bellowed.

"We're with you, Natsuki-san," Yuji affirmed.

The three of them focused inwards, manifesting their auras as they had learned in the 30-minute intensive training earlier. Power swelled up from deep within their souls.

In a blur of speed, they charged the doorway as one, obliterating it off its hinges.

As the cloud of dust from their explosive entrance began to dissipate, a peculiar sight unfolded before the trio's eyes. Two shrine maidens, clad in the ceremonial attire of miko, stood steadfast. Their hands moved with practiced precision, waving gohei wands in the air as they orchestrated an enigmatic ritual. In the ritual's epicenter, a man draped in medical robes manipulated a complex, almost extraterrestrial, computer system with an air of tranquility. What was most startling was the utter disregard for their abrupt intrusion, the ritual proceeding undeterred amidst the tumult.

"The hell, are these nutjobs just going to gloss over our kickass entrance?" Takeshi's voice echoed in the chamber, a mix of incredulity and indignation.

"It... It certainly seems so..." Yuji's voice wavered, his unease palpable.

"This setup... It feels eerily familiar," Subaru voiced his thoughts, an odd sense of déjà vu washing over him.

"No shit, Sherlock - it's like a carbon copy of those whacked-out cultists from our dream," Takeshi retorted, his words laced with a hint of begrudging agreement.

"Oh? It appears we have some insignificant intruders disrupting my ritual," the man's voice slithered through the air, a cold smirk dancing on his lips as he turned to face them. "What could possibly drive your pitiful souls to barge in and disrupt my intricate work?"

"Shut up freak! We're here to wipe the floor with you!" Takeshi's shout ricocheted off the walls, his fury unmasked.

"Ease up, Takeshi-san. We should extract some intel first," Yuji countered, his voice a balm against Takeshi's fiery outburst.

"I'm not convinced he'll spill anything..." Subaru's voice held a note of foreboding. "His aura... it's steeped in murderous intent."

"What? How can you-" Takeshi began to object.

"Just concentrate like Yuji did earlier. We now have the ability to detect auras," Subaru cut in quickly. "This man's energy... it screams danger."

"Heh, your comrade's hit the nail on the head, child," the man's voice was laced with dark amusement. "Unfortunately, now that this ritual has been exposed to your eyes, I can't let you saunter out alive~kukuku."

"Brace yourselves, guys!" Subaru's voice rang out. "We're new to wielding these powers, so stay on your toes. This guy could wipe us out in a heartbeat if we're not cautious!"

"Douman-sama, may we take the liberty of ridding you of these nuisances?" one of the miko proposed, her voice submissive yet eager.

'Douman? As in, Ashiya Douman?!' Subaru thought in shock.

"Silence! Continue with the ritual. I'll handle these intruders on my own," Douman's voice cut through the air like a blade. With a swift sweep of his hand, their reality distorted, transitioning into a surreal, matrix-like dimension.

"What in the world?!" Yuji's voice echoed in the altered space, his surprise evident.

"Welcome to your final resting place, children," Douman's voice held an ominous promise. His garments morphed into ceremonial robes, his long white hair radiating an intense energy. A formidable dark aura spiraled around him, punctuated by erratic, jagged sparks of electricity that danced menacingly around his figure.

"No way...his power is nuts!" Takeshi shuddered, struggling under the intense pressure bearing down on them.

"I know... It's just like Yuji said; he's way out of our league!" Subaru said, freaked out.

Takeshi stared at Subaru, shaking his head firmly. After a lifetime of being bullied and feeling helpless, he refused to cower in fear again. Clenching his fists, rage and determination flooded through him. "To hell with this! No way I'm just standing here scared! I'm gonna punch this guy's lights" Takeshi shot forward with blinding speed.

"Takeshi, stop!" Subaru shouted, fear creeping into his voice.

"Takeshi-san, don't!" Yuji yelled urgently.

Douman just sighed as Takeshi's punch barely brushed his face.

"What?! My punch did nothing!" Takeshi yelled in surprise.

"Silly boy. You can probably punch through a wall with that strength, but that's not enough to scratch even the first layer of my skin," Douman snickered. "You're nowhere near my power level."

Douman flexed casually and sent Takeshi flying backward with a powerful shockwave.

"Takeshi!" Subaru's yell echoed through the space.

Yuji was a blur as he rushed over, catching Takeshi just before he hit the ground.

"Nice save, Yuji!" Subaru called as he sprinted over. "You holding up, Takeshi?"

"Yeah, I'm good," Takeshi grunted as he pulled himself up with Yuji's help. "Thanks, buddy."

"No problem! But don't go charging in like that again," Yuji said, his voice firm.

Subaru's eyes hardened as he glared at Douman. "Guys, we need to team up and plan our moves if we want to leave a mark on this guy..."

"What's our next move?!" Takeshi asked, his voice laced with tension.

"Heh, Really? You insects think your lame plans can beat someone as great as I?" Douman laughed, his aura swirling around him like a storm.

"Get ready!" Yuji shouted, his voice barely heard over the roar of the gathering energy.

"Yuji, use some fake-outs! I'll go straight for him! Takeshi, wait for a chance to land a big hit!" Subaru yelled, his aura firming up around him.

"Roger that, boss!" Takeshi shot back, his knuckles popping as his red aura blazed up around him.

"Here I go!" Yuji yelled, his celestial aura wrapping around him. He shot toward Douman like a bullet.

"Oh? Let's see what you got," Douman smirked.

Yuji was a blur as he darted around Douman, trying to confuse him.

"Impressive. That's pretty fast for a human, but not fast enough to break the sound barrier," Douman commented idly, tracking Yuji's moves without trouble. "This distraction is—"

"Hey, jerk! Look over here!" Subaru cut in, popping up in front of Douman and throwing a flurry of kicks and punches.

Douman dodged them all with a yawn. "Let's count...50, 100, 150 punches. Not too shabby for a human juiced up on power, but you're leagues away from my level," he jeered. Out of the blue, he grabbed them both by their necks. "How amusing! A brawler like you doesn't have a chance against a caster like me."

"Hey, you bastard!" Takeshi hollered, materializing behind Douman in a flash of red. His fist pulsated with raw energy. "Chew on this!"

His punch connected with a bone-jarring thud, making Douman release his friends and skid backward. Douman flipped effortlessly in mid-air and landed with cat-like grace.

"I see... When you insects team up, you're a bit more of a nuisance," Douman mused. "Hmm, but if that's the best attack you can output, then you'd best just surrender and let me finish you off swiftly."

"My punch didn't even scratch that son of a bitch!" Takeshi spat, his face twisting in rage.

"Focus, we just started the fight!" Subaru rallied. "Let's push our power to the limit - give it everything we've got!" Subaru's golden aura intensified, energy swirling around him.

Yuji and Takeshi followed suit, unleashing the full extent of their auras with strained exertion.

"Oh? You fools can output even more power? This could be entertaining..." Douman taunted, arms open mockingly.

"I'll wipe that smirk off your face!" Takeshi snarled before composing himself. He channeled his energy into his limbs, increasing his speed and strength.

"Let's go, guys!" Subaru yelled.

"Right!"/"Hell yeah!" Takeshi and Yuji affirmed, launching themselves at Douman again.

Subaru unleashed a blistering barrage of punches, his speed now far beyond human limits. Takeshi joined the assault from behind with his own devastatingly swift blows.

Yuji darted around them, seeking any opening in Douman's defense amidst the blur of attacks.

"HAHAHA! This is entertaining! To think mere humans could exhibit such feats! You would've ranked high centuries ago!" Douman laughed loudly, dodging their attacks with slight effort. "Your attack speed's easily doubled! You must be nearing the sound barrier now! 100, 200, no, haha! 400 punches per second!" He appraised Subaru. "And your friend's speed isn't far behind - his power output may even exceed yours!"

"Shut your mouth! Stop taking us so lightly!" Takeshi yelled, straining to maintain his blistering speed.

Sensing an opening, Yuji rocketed high into the air, channeling all his strength into his legs for a crushing aerial kick targeting Douman. Detecting their friend's gambit, Subaru and Takeshi swiftly pulled back.

Yuji descended like a meteor, his aura flaring wildly around him.

The impact generated a deafening explosion, distorting the fabric of the dimension with its sheer force.

Doing a series of backflips, Yuji rejoined his friends, panting heavily.

"Hell yeah! Nice one, Yuji; that bastard's gotta be done!" Takeshi whooped.

"Don't jinx it! This is just like Dragon Ball, where the bad guy seems beat, but the smoke clears and he's fine!" Subaru cautioned.

As the haze dissipated, Douman stood unfazed amidst the devastation. Yuji's strike had managed to inflict minor injuries, but his expression remained smug.

"Uh oh..."

"That kick was impressive indeed. But just a few scratches, nothing more," Douman chuckled condescendingly. "Relying solely on physical force will never defeat me, children. Why don't you try to utilize magic, hmm?"

"Damn it, an asshole to the end!" Takeshi snarled.

"Heh, we can't use magic yet, but that won't stop us from punching you good in the face, bastard!" Subaru yelled, charging his golden aura to the limit. "Yuji, Takeshi, buy me some time! I'm gonna try to push my latent power beyond the limits. Even if this guy's way stronger, I'll still wipe that smug smile off his face!"

"You got it, Natsuki-san!" Yuji pushed his azure aura, ready to assist. Takeshi followed, his crimson aura swirling violently.

"Oh? Attempting one final attack without magic? You're nothing but worthless insects..." Douman mocked, effortlessly evading their relentless assault. "Though I'm a caster, my physical abilities far exceed any human's peak. Like this!"

Douman vanished in an imperceptible blur. "What the-" Takeshi's words were cut off as Douman appeared behind him, seizing his head before brutally driving it down, smashing his face into the ground with crushing force.

"Takeshi!" Subaru and Yuji cried out in dismay.

"Now, learn your place, child!" Douman began charging magic in the hand, gripping Takeshi's head. "Die, you insolent brat! Agi-!"

Before Douman could cast the spell, a lightning-fast kick from Yuji momentarily stunned him, interrupting the incantation.

Quickly recovering with a kip-up maneuver, Takeshi unleashed a blistering barrage of punches on the startled sorcerer.

"You saved my hide there, Yuji. I seriously owe you one!"

"Anytime, my friend!"

"Grrr..." Subaru continued amassing power, his translucent form flickering from the sheer amount of energy he was channeling.

"You got lucky, child!" Douman snarled. "Zio!" He waved his hand, casting a crackling thunderbolt at Yuji and Takeshi. They barely managed to evade it.

"Just a little more..." Subaru's aura began shining brilliantly, enveloping his translucent form in a radiant golden shroud.

Noticing this, Yuji and Takeshi launched themselves at Douman again, striving to buy Subaru those precious final seconds. Yuji unleashed a rapid succession of attacks, leaving afterimages in his wake. Meanwhile, Takeshi sought any opening to strike, though Douman deflected each attempt.

Feeling his power peak, Subaru flexed and a shockwave rippled out from him. "It's now or never!" His form flickered before blitzing at Douman, easily surpassing the sound barrier.

Catching sight of the golden blur barreling toward him, Douman's eyes widened in shock, allowing Yuji and Takeshi to land gut punches in tandem before retreating.

Douman coughed up spittle, gritting his teeth in fury. "You damn bra—"

His words were silenced as Subaru's empowered fist collided with his face in a dazzling golden explosion, shockwaves quaking the dimension.

Yuji and Takeshi braced themselves as the tremors continued for a time before finally subsiding.

Subaru's golden aura faded away. He had pushed his power to its absolute limits and now stood utterly exhausted, dropping to his knees panting heavily. Seeing this, Yuji and Takeshi rushed to his aid.

"Holy crap, bro! That was freaking insane!"

"Natsuki-san, are you alright?!"

Still catching his breath, Subaru replied, "Y-Yeah...don't worry. Just used all my strength for the first time. Feels like I just finished an intense workout session."

"Well, you definitely decked him good in the face, so it was totally worth it!" Takeshi exclaimed, pumping his fist in satisfaction.

Their satisfaction quickly evaporated upon hearing a chilling incantation: "Dia!"

The trio turned to see Douman emerging from the settling smoke, glaring at them furiously. His robes were tattered, exposing his toned physique. Trickles of blood leaked from scattered wounds, especially a gash on his cheekbone. With another shout of "Dia!" the injuries rapidly healed over.

"What the..." Takeshi murmured in dismay.

"No way...he's too strong. We can't defeat him as we are now," Yuji admitted, shoulders slumping in defeat.

"Damn it..." Subaru's tone was grim, having exhausted his power completely with that last attack. "I'm sorry guys, I gave it everything I had back there. I've got nothing left now..."

"You insolent insects!" Douman seethed through gritted teeth. "To think you actually managed to injure me! I had to utilize 70% of my true power just to survive that!" He flexed angrily, muscles bulging. "WHO ARE YOU, BOY?!" His glare fixed on Subaru. "How can a mere child like you wield such power?! I sense you only just tapped into your strength! So how?!"

Seeing their silence, Douman strode forward. "No matter. You're already exhausted. And your roach friends are useless now." The remark earned angry grunts from Yuji and Takeshi. "I'll simply destroy you all...especially you, boy, since your power poses a threat-"

"A threat to your evil plans, blah blah blah. Get over it, weirdo. You sound like a cliché game villain already," Subaru mocked.

"Game? What nonsense..." Douman cackled maniacally, arms raised to the skies. "I'll cast a spell to blast you insects into oblivion!"

The dimension distorted around Douman as an enormous fiery orb materialized and rapidly expanded between his outstretched hands. The blistering sphere radiated intense heat, its swirling flames tinted a mix of crimson, amber and gold. Flickering tongues of fire lashed out from its churning surface. The very air seemed to warp and shimmer around the intensifying conflagration. In mere moments, the ravenous sphere had swollen to titanic proportions, easily dwarfing Douman himself. The sorcerer struggled to contain its cataclysmic power.

"Yo, the old geezer was supposed to yank us out if things got too crazy, right?!" Takeshi yelled anxiously. "What's he waiting for?!"

"Old man, teleport us out already, or we're toast!" Subaru shouted.

"Fools, no one can save you now!" Douman thundered. "Maragi!" A colossal fireball like a raging meteor surged toward them, promising utter annihilation.

Yuji stammered, awestruck as the massive fireball neared.

"We're done for!" Takeshi yelled.

"Stupid gramps, what the hell are you waiting for?!" Subaru screamed with all his might as the Maragi closed in.

Suddenly, the old man's voice echoed, "Forgive my delay. I have seen enough." In an instant, the friends vanished, leaving Douman shocked.

The Maragi detonated with an earth-shattering blast, sending violent tremors through the fabric of the dimension.

"What?! Where have they gone?!" Douman hissed, eyes darting wildly. "Someone snatched them from this realm...but who wields such power?!"

He focused intensely, trying to detect their energy. "Nothing...gone without a trace. Their souls must have returned to their bodies," he deduced.

Douman's aura erupted in a spike of fiery rage. "DAMN IT ALL!" He began casting spells in a blind rampage, decimating the already distorted dimension.

"Who was it?! Seimei, perhaps? No...I would have detected his wretched aura..." Douman paced like a caged beast. "Could there be others free from the Makai? If so, then..." He trailed off, shaking his head.

"I must accelerate my plans," Douman declared, regaining his composure. "Legions of demons shall be summoned from the abyss." His eyes narrowed, hands glowing with mystical forces. "That bothersome trio of insects will not impede my ambitions. Especially that boy..."

His final words dripped with venom. With that ominous vow lingering, Douman vanished in an instant. The dimension trembled faintly in his absence, as if releasing a held breath.

When Subaru opened his eyes, he found himself back at Inokashira Park. Pascal barked excitedly, overjoyed at his return. The old man remained seated nearby, deep in meditation.

"I'm...back?" Subaru mumbled, looking around in confusion.

"Yes, I managed to retrieve all of your souls before Douman's spell struck," the old man said, a faint smile crossing his face.

"Damn, that was too close for comfort, old timer!" Subaru exclaimed, prompting the old man to chuckle. "Hey, don't laugh! We could've been toast!"

"My apologies, young one," the old man replied, still grinning. "But I observed your battle in great detail. Your safety was never in jeopardy."

Subaru just grumbled under his breath. After a moment, he asked, "Are Yuji and Takeshi okay?"

"Your friends are fine. Their souls returned to their bodies at the same instant as yours," the elder reassured.

Subaru's expression grew conflicted. "Alright, real talk - who the hell are you? The stuff you can do is nuts. Ripping out souls, crafting dimensions, stopping time...what's the deal?"

"I'm afraid I can't divulge that information yet. Please accept my apologies," the old man said with a sigh.

"But why all the secrecy?" Subaru pressed.

"Revealing my identity could jeopardize my mission... You see, I'm operating incognito, as they say. I'm here strictly to provide you guidance"

Subaru raised an eyebrow. "Alright, Mr. Mysterious. So what, you're like my sensei or something?"

The elder chuckled. "In a manner of speaking, yes. Consider me your mentor on this journey."

"Well you're one hell of a sensei with some insane skills!" Subaru exclaimed. "Should I just call you Sensei then?"

"Feel free to call me whatever suits you - old man, sensei, or any other title you prefer," the enigmatic figure replied with an amused grin, stroking his long beard.

"Alright Sensei, I'll be in your care from here on out!" Subaru said with a bow.

The old man nodded, chuckling warmly at the gesture.

"So that really was the actual Ashiya Douman back there?" Subaru asked, eyes wide. "One of those shrine maidens mentioned his name when we entered that strange room."

"Indeed it was," the elder confirmed. "Many historical figures, demons, gods, and monsters from mythology are quite real. The cosmology of this world and others is vast."

"Damn, guess that explains a lot," Subaru muttered. "Pretty insane we managed to fight someone like him at all."

The old man nodded, his eyes filled with pride. "Despite that, you all performed admirably against such a foe. In truth, I hadn't anticipated Douman being your adversary. Many entities are emerging from Makai in different locations. For him to be present..."

"And he's still lurking in that Echo Building," Subaru added thoughtfully. "He was using some kind of weird computer too. How the hell does an ancient geezer even operate modern tech?"

The elder chuckled. "He likely absorbed the necessary knowledge through magic. In his era, he was quite the adept sorcerer, as you witnessed..."

"No kidding," Subaru muttered.

"As for that device, I suspect it serves as a portal connecting the human world and Makai," the old man theorized.

"And he likely used that portal to return from Makai to our world, right?" Subaru asked.

The old man nodded. "Yes. And now that he can operate the device, Douman may summon even more dangerous demons from the abyss."

Subaru clicked his tongue in frustration. "Great, like we didn't have enough freakin' demons running around already."

"Which is exactly why you must grow stronger," the elder urged. "Reunite with your friends in person, and defeat Douman. While you displayed impressive latent power today, forcing him to exert more energy, it is still not enough. You require greater strength, and quickly!"

Subaru pet Pascal thoughtfully. "Okay, but how exactly are we supposed to get strong enough to take Douman down? It's not like any of us know magic, and that seems like it'll be crucial."

"I believe you already possess the means, ho ho," the old man said with a chuckle, eyeing the box containing the COMP device.

Subaru looked down at the box and facepalmed. "Oh right, duh. So I gotta start recruiting some demons huh?"

The elder nodded. "Precisely. While you cannot yet cast magic yourself, commanding demons will grant access to any spells you require."

Subaru sighed. "Got it. I still need to transfer the summoning program over to this thing. Then I can test it out as much as I want."

The old man nodded. "Keep in mind, many beings from Makai can be...troublesome. Exercise caution when recruiting them. Additionally, some demons align more with order or chaos. Depending on your stance, lawful or chaotic entities may aid you. But by remaining neutral, you can leverage the strength of both."

"Mhm, I understand," Subaru affirmed.

The elder smiled. "Now, beyond demons, let's return to the matter regarding your friends..."

"What is it?" Subaru asked.

"As I mentioned before, your friends each represent opposing sides, their lives shaped accordingly. In time...difficult choices regarding them will arise. Their personalities may align now, but later, collisions could force you to take a side," the old man warned gravely.

"But..." Subaru looked troubled, conflicted. "You're saying I gotta choose between Yuji and Takeshi eventually? Why can't I side with both and try to balance things out? Hell, I just met them a few nights ago, but they already feel like best friends!"

The elder nodded solemnly. "Such are the whims of fate, I'm afraid. And picking one may not be the only option - to maintain true balance, perhaps distance from both will become necessary."

Subaru recoiled. "What?! Stay away from them completely?"

"Peace, let fate unfold as it will for now," the old man soothed. "Just be vigilant of events surrounding them. When the time comes, you must act to preserve equilibrium. Do you understand?"

Subaru clenched his fist resolutely. "Fine, then I'll just have to give it my all to keep them together...bring on whatever fate's got in store!"

The old man smiled fondly. "With such spirit, I've no doubt you can succeed, Subaru. I believe nothing is beyond your capabilities."

Subaru grinned, giving a thumbs up. "Thank you, Sensei!"

The elder nodded. "Now, you should head home. After your encounter, much needs explaining to your mother."

Subaru's eyes widened. "Crap, you're right!" A thought struck him. "Oh, Sensei, do you know why her soul—"

"Her appearance eludes me," the old man admitted. "Great forces have taken an interest in you, not only myself."

'Could it be Yuriko's doing?' Subaru wondered briefly before shaking his head. "Anyway, I'll be off. See you around, Sensei!"

As Subaru turned to leave, he paused. "Oh wait, where can I find you again?"

"For now, I'll remain here in Inokashira Park," the old man said. "As your journey takes you further, I will relocate accordingly."

"Got it, like an NPC guide from a game, huh?" Subaru paused, looking embarrassed. "Ah, sorry, old habits die hard I guess."

The elder chuckled warmly. "There's no need to rush change, my boy. All in due time." His expression grew serious once more. "Stay alert on your travels, Subaru. Many demons await, but remember - recruit allies, join with Yuji and Takeshi, and stop Douman."

Subaru nodded firmly, determination blazing in his eyes. "I will!"

Grabbing Pascal's leash, he turned to leave. "See you around, Sensei!"

The old man inclined his head slightly as Subaru departed. Returning to meditation, a content smile settled on his face.

'Follow my guidance, Subaru. In time, you shall possess the strength to shake this world,' he thought. 'For now, begin walking the arduous path ahead. One so spirited and steadfast is destined for great things. May fortune favor your journey.'

"I was proven correct. Natsuki Subaru holds incredible potential,"

The voice of the enigmatic man echoed through the vastness of outer space. His heterochromatic eyes shone with great interest. "Despite it being his first time tapping into his latent power, he managed to battle Ashiya Douman, nearly taking the sorcerer's life. The boy will definitely be a great asset."

At his side as before floated Yuriko, who remained silent, eyes twitching with irritation.

Noticing this, the man inquired, "I sense something is troubling you..."

"Why didn't you permit me to interfere directly?!" She replied angrily. "I could have joined him, shielded him, ensured victory over Douman! Were it not for that intruder teleporting him out, my beloved may have perished!"

"So that's what's bothering you. It's rather odd hearing that from someone like you."

"What are you implying?"

"When I first assigned you the task to 'hunt' him, I saw it in your eyes. To you, he was just another prey caught in your fangs. Yet beholding him in the mortal world caused the opposite reaction. Why is that?" the man questioned, a hint of amusement in his heterochromatic eyes.

"That's none of your concern," she spat venomously.

"Oh my, such hostility. Is it because you cling to the fanciful notion of the boy being 'his' reincarnation? I expected you not to be so easily misled."

"You fail to comprehend. I sense it...it's his soul. Refrain from interfering in my affairs, LOUIS."

"Now now, let's mind that tone, Yuriko. If those are your sentiments, so be it. After all, I granted you freedom to act as you wish. Going against my ideals would be most unwise."

Louis continued unfazed, "Besides, if being with the boy is your sole desire, you had two chances to charm him over. Yet you failed both times...I wonder why?"

"You're starting to irritate me..." For a fleeting moment, her gorgeous azure eyes shifted to amber reptilian slits.

"I'm merely stating facts, don't take it to heart," he smirked, gaze fixed on Earth. "Regardless, I'll permit more attempts to sway your 'destined' partner. But make haste, the clock is ticking. Else our plans may be foiled. God is maneuvering its pieces upon the board."

"You speak of the Nordic deity? Hmph, perhaps you two would get along well, sharing a fondness for trite names."

"Ah, ever the charming lady," Louis mused.

"You granted that worthless human, Gotou, enough demonic power to rival demigods. Why not let him battle the Thunder God alone?"

"That would be far too predictable. Gotou clashing with Thor would bore me to tears, much like the endless events we've observed over eons." Louis looked thoughtful before grinning wickedly. "It will prove far more entertaining to use them as stepping stones to test dear Subaru, don't you agree?"

Yuriko hissed in warning, "Mind yourself, Cyphre. If my beloved comes to harm because of you, I will exact vengeance."

"As I said, if you succeed in swaying him, you'll have no cause for concern," Louis replied calmly.

"On other matters, summoning his mother's spirit was a clever maneuver. I wonder, was that an underhanded scheme to capture the boy's heart?"

"I did not wish to involve someone precious to him, much less his mother. But with you barring me from aiding him directly, I wanted to provide the strongest motivation possible. So call it what you will, I owe you no explanations about my methods."

"Alright, alright." Louis lifted his hands in mock surrender before clasping them behind his back once more. "Now, to the most critical matter, I must share, especially given your fixation with your new partner."

"What are you implying, Cyphre?"

"Oh, it's something truly fascinating that managed to evade your watchful gaze," Louis remarked, a sly grin spreading across his face.

"Get to the point," Yuriko snapped, her eyes narrowing sharply.

"It seems someone from another world has been trying to abduct dear Subaru, not once or twice, but multiple times," Louis revealed, his heterochromatic eyes glinting with amusement.

Yuriko's expression morphed into utter shock and unbridled rage, her aggressive aura flaring wildly to warp the endless void around them.

"W-WHAT DID YOU SAY?!" she thundered.

"Someone seeks to take Natsuki Subaru away to another world," Louis reiterated calmly. "But do not worry, I thwarted their attempts with ease."

He smirked, clearly enjoying Yuriko's reaction. "The most strange thing, as I said, is that somehow it managed to evade your presence, yet her power is so low compared to even mid-tier entities of the Expanse."

"HER?! A WOMAN?!" Yuriko's eyes shifted to glowing amber slits, serpentine features marring her visage. Fangs peeked from her lips as she was overtaken by primordial fury. Her aura exploded in intensity.

Louis just kept side-glancing at her, unfazed by her intense reaction.

Yuriko's aura output was so powerful that some planets across the solar system started warping. "WHO?!" she demanded furiously.

"From what I've gathered across the Expanse, her name seems to be Satella," Louis revealed casually. "Quite the notorious figure where she's from. Better known as the Jealous Witch."

"WHAT DOES THAT BITCH WANT WITH MY BELOVED?!" Yuriko screamed beside herself with rage.

"Perhaps you should be the one to find that out, hmm?" Louis tutted condescendingly. "Now, please calm yourself before you destroy this entire solar system in your tempest."

Regaining her composure, Yuriko's features returned to their elegant norm, along with her piercing azure eyes.

"How could that wretch evade my sight? It should be utterly impossible unless..." Yuriko's glare fixed on Louis, who stifled an amused chuckle. "Did you permit this farce just to spite me?!"

"Come now, don't be absurd," Louis tutted condescendingly. "I simply found your outburst entertaining. Regardless, if you wish to protect the boy, you ought to investigate this matter yourself." His expression turned grave. "This task falls to you, not I."

"Spare me your nonsense, imbecile," she snarled in response, eyes smoldering.

"Well then, I wish you luck on your next 'hunt' for the boy," Louis said, averting his gaze to the moon. "But I must warn you - should you fail again, I'll ask you to cease this fixation. Reincarnation or not, if he proves uncooperative, we must consider other options."

"Silence, fool. Now that I've confirmed my beloved's identity, I've no need of your approval," Yuriko snapped angrily. "Don't overstep the bounds of our arrangement."

With a final annoyed look, Yuriko dematerialized in a golden glow.

"Such imprudence..." Louis chuckled, amused. "I only want what's best for this world - free from God's tyranny, where all may find freedom. If Natsuki Subaru proves useless to my aims, perhaps I should remove him from the board entirely."

After the chaotic events of the day, Subaru strolled home deep in contemplation, Pascal faithfully at his side.

Recalling Yuji's earlier words, he realized this could be the perfect chance to finally meet his kind friend in person. 'Yuji said he was headed to Yuka's place. I should try intercepting him there,' Subaru strategized. 'Plus, I need to warn her about Ozawa.'

Subaru tightened his fist slightly, feeling the subtle thrum of power flowing through him. Though imperceptible to normal people, his awakened aura granted strength far beyond human limits.

He was mere blocks from home when an officer, flanked by two soldiers, abruptly signaled for him to halt. Not wanting to incite conflict, Subaru complied, Pascal echoing his obedience.

The officer approached with measured steps, sternly demanding, "State your name. Are you Natsuki Subaru?"

Subaru's expression grew serious. "I'm him. What's this about, officer?"

In response, the officer produced handcuffs with a sharp click. "You're under arrest. Despite the cameras near the drugstore failing, we located your prints at the murder scene!"

Pascal stepped protectively in front of Subaru, emitting a palpable demonic aura that Subaru could now sense thanks to his recent training. It explained how Pascal had accomplished such extraordinary feats at the mall. However, more dire issues were at hand—the incident with the petra was now backfiring against Subaru.

Subaru's thoughts raced in frustration. 'Damn it all!' He recalled Takeshi's words from before, about how the police would be too preoccupied with the murders to care about the mall incident. 'Oh yeah, great theory there, Takeshi. The cops are definitely too busy to notice a freaking cannibalistic murder. Can't believe I didn't see this coming!' Subaru thought, his internal voice dripping with sarcasm. He couldn't simply fight off the officers without facing severe consequences. There was no choice but to surrender and face this false accusation...

"You sicko, I've seen twisted crap in my career, but a kid chowing down on a corpse?" The officer scowled with disgust. "Cuff him!"

Hackles raised; Pascal was ready to lunge until Subaru discreetly signaled him to chill. "You're making a big mistake here, sir."

"My only mistake was not busting you sooner!" He sneered. "Don't sweat your mutt. We've got a special cage for it."

"How very thoughtful of you, 'officer,'" Subaru bit back, words dripping with snarky sarcasm as the soldiers roughly cuffed him. He glanced reassuringly at Pascal. "Hang in there, buddy. We'll bounce from this mess. Just play nice for now."

Pascal whined in response, settling reluctantly.

"Take them to the hospital. No room at the station with all the murder perps they've hauled in."

"Sir, yes, sir!"

The officer uncuffed Subaru roughly, shoving him forcefully to the cold cell floor.

"This here's a makeshift cage for freaks like you!" He cackled wickedly. "Enjoy your stay, psycho kid!" With that nasty parting taunt, he slammed the barred door shut and left.

"Damn it..." Subaru stood up unfazed, brushing himself off. The minor impact was nothing to his enhanced strength.

He studied the sturdy cell bars closely, contemplating if he could utilize his newfound power to break free. But causing more chaos now would only exacerbate the situation.

"Umm, h-hello there, it seems they caught you too, huh?" A nervous, familiar male voice spoke up. "W-wait, that energy...Natsuki-san, is that you?!"

"Huh?" Subaru turned, shock melting into elation at the sight of the speaker. "Yuji?!"

End of chapter 2.

Greetings, readers! In chapter two, the action truly begins. We witnessed the first battle scenes (aside from best boy Pascal wrecking that Petra last time) and Subaru awakening his powers.

The enigmatic Louis Cyphre (you likely know his identity) has intercepted Satella's attempts at Isekai-ing our MC. This explains why Subaru remains unaware of her. Yuriko went full yandere upon hearing her stalkerish rival Satella has been interfering with her beloved. Poor Yuji (lol) got busted en route to visit Yuka—awful timing! But at last, he met up with Subaru after two chapters.

The next chapter will be an emotional rollercoaster for pivotal plot reasons—likely the most challenging to write yet. However, I aim to make it the highest quality so far.

Immense thanks to all reading this crossover—you're the real MVPs! Your support motivates me to continue. Look forward to the next update! Until then, take care.
