Super Mario Bros Movie: A new Adventure
Prolouge: A Royal Rescue
All was not well in the Mushroom Kingdom.
It was an event no one had seen coming, on that warm early autumn night. It had been six months since the battle in Brooklyn, and Bowser was still a little Koopa king in a gilded cage, mournfully pining for Peach while playing his tiny piano. No one had expected the supposedly leaderless Koopa army to attack Princess Peach Toadstool's castle at night, as no one expected them to overwhelm the princess and her mushroom guards. Oh, Peach had managed to fight off the monsters that swarmed over her, punching, kicking and stomping over two dozen of them. But Kamek's spell managed to neutralize the princess, using a spell that froze her in place so she could nto move. The toads had gone to Mario's house in Toad Town to get the two champions who had saved the kingdom from Bowser's wrath in the first place;
Mario and Luigi, the Super Mario Brothers.
The two brothers, one glad in red and the other in green, tore their way through the 'worlds' of the mushroom kingdom like a hurricane. Like two blue collar knights in plumber's overalls and caps, they stomped goombas and koopa troopas in world one, and zapped cheep cheep fish-birds and blooper squids with fire flower blasts in world two. In world four they raced to dodge spinys tossed down by an insane goggle-wearing Koopa, Lakitu (How is he able to float on a solid cloud" Mario wondered in his mind. "Must be magic, like everything else in this world.") before climbing the rows of floating bricks, and stomping on his head to send the floating koopa tumbling to his demise. And they battled with a pair of hammer brothers in world five, ducking their deadly projectiles, and smashing the floating bricks they stood on to send him flying.
They battled their way across the mushroom kingdom, stopping at the small castle-like toad gatehouses to rest each night, and lowering the flag on each before going inside to rest. The koopa army seemed to have invaded all of the outlying provinces of the princess's domains, and even seemed more dangerous without their maniacal monarch to guide them.
"Come on Luigi, try to keep up!" Mario called back at his brother, as they jumped across towering mushroom platforms, and fought koopa paratroopas. "The princess is waiting for us!"
"I'm trying, Mario, I'm trying!" Luigi gasped, trying desperately to keep up. "Don't worry, we're not gonna let the princess down!"
The two had hit a question block, and managed to make a huge bean stalk emerge that went high into the sky. Like Jack in the story their mama mia used to tell them, Mario and Luigi climbed high into the sky, and managed to find an enemy-free zone that was filled with gold coins. As they breezed through and collected the scattered treasure, Luigi became lost in his own thoughts, thinking about his older brother Mario, and this new world they had found themselves in.
Mario... the older brother Luigi had always looked up to; his protector and best friend. Mario had always come rushing to the defense of others back in Brooklyn, long before he and Luigi had stumbled across this crazy Mushroom World. Like the time that giant ape mysteriously burst out of the sewer near a construction site the Wrecking Crew had been working on, and grabbed Pauline, the young mayoral candidate at the time. The giant ape had taken her to the top of the construction site, climbing up the girders as the panicked construction workers fled. Without a though to his own safety, Mario picked up a giant hammer, and climbed the ladders and girders while the gorilla chucked barrels stacked at the top of the site down at him. Mario managed to pull out the girder pins holding the top of the site together, causing the gorilla to tumble down, as Mario had caught the young mayoral candidate. Mario tried to keep the beast caged until the authorities arrived, but a younger gorilla came in and rescued him, before they both fled back into the sewer. (At the time, Luigi and his brother had no idea where these gorillas had come from. But while Donkey Kong was too young to remember the incident, after some prodding Cranky Kong admitted it was just him and his son when they were younger, coming through the warp zone and playing a prank. Both actually didn't realize Mario was 'that guy' until he and Luigi confronted them.)
Another time, Mario had beaten off a bunch of thugs that their own boss had hired to chase them off of a construction site they were working on. Foreman Spike and the site owner had been hoping to collect the insurance money on the site for not being completed, and so paid some mobsters to dress up in silly wrench and eggplant suits from a costume store to chase the Wrecking Crew workers off. Mario fought the goons off himself, using hammers to smash the ladders they were climbing, and bombs to chase them off the site. Luigi wished much he were as brave as Mario, but there were only a few times he had been able to show his courage, like the time he and Mario were working on the pipes under they city for a Wrecking Crew contract, and they had to fight off a swarm of monsters down in the sewers while repairing the pipes (Shellcreeper turtles, Side stepper crabs, and fighter flies; creatures from the mushroom world, they later learned). That time, Luigi had been able to help his big brother out, knocking the little buggers on their backs, and kicking them into the flushing those monsters out the sewer, they managed to fix the pipes, and get the job done! But no one ever acknowledged anything he and Mario had ever done, always calling the brothers losers. Not until the battle with Bowser brought their heroism right into everyone's faces.
Despite already being strong, Mario seemed only to grow more and more powerful since they had moved to the mushroom kingdom. In the months since they had beaten Bowser, he had been training at the obstacle course outside of Peach's castle for several hours every day, getting stronger and more skilled with every week that passed. He had eventually beaten the Princess's time on the obstacle course, and their occasional playful sparring matches had gone from Peach beat him each time, to Mario and her fighting to a draw, to their recent matches where Mario could always defeat the princess in under twenty seconds. But the Princess only seemed happy that Mario had surpassed her, saying "The stronger Mario becomes, the better he will be able to protect my kingdom and my subjects. There are no limits to how powerful of a protector and hero he can become." Mario and Peach... neither his brother nor the princess could see it, although everyone else could. The two were slowly falling for each other, yet both seemed totally oblivious to what was happening between them. Luigi sighed, and wondered if he would ever be as strong as his brother, or find his own princess.
Perhaps he was never meant to be as strong as his brother. Perhaps being like his big brother Mario was just a childish fairy tale, like the stork bringing babies to their parents. (Luigi has seen a home movie how he and Mario were born to mama mia... not pretty.) Perhaps, he would never find a princess of his own, and one day maybe even have a family of his own. Maybe that was never meant to be... but Luigi would always have his dreams. Just because it hadn't happened yet, didn't mean he wouldn't one day make his dreams come true.
Luigi was snapped out of his reverie, as he and Mario reached the large stone palace where the toad spies had seen Peach taken. The two made their way through the maze of lava pits and warp pipes, until they arrived at a short suspension bridge to find... Bowser himself?! The two brothers barely had time to think about the fact Bowser was still imprisoned, as the large turtle began spitting fire at them. Leaping and dodging his attacks, the plumbers noticed this 'Bowser's' attacks were nowhere as powerful or skilled as the real king of the koopas. While Luigi distracted the imposter, Mario leapt over the giant turtle, ran to the edge of the bridge, and used an axe hanging on the wall to chop the suspension chains holding the bridge up. The fake Bowser tumbled downward, turning back into a goomba as he fell into the lava, as Luigi jumped to safety. The two rushed int other next room, and freed Princess Peach from the cage she was being held in.
"Mario, Luigi, thanks for coming to the rescue!" She replied gratefully, hugging Luigi, and kissing Mario on the cheek, and jokingly spouting cliche lines. "What could I ever do to thank my two heroes?"
"Well, we are king of hungry." Luigi grinned, trying not to laugh. "Maybe you could bake us a cake?"
The three of them all laughed, as they made their way out of the conquered fortress, and headed back towards Toad Town and Princess Peach's castle.
...
Even as the trio made their way home, two shadowy figures in a mighty fortress in a distant place watched them through a magical viewing mirror.
"Sucess, mein konig! Your plan to use the dream machine to get her Koopa's army to kidnap zee princess vorked!" The large anthropomorphic rat with a mustache and sunglasses replied in a German accent. "Ze dream Machine planted ze ideas in zhier brains vithout zhem ever realizing it!"
"You are correct, Mouser. The first test of the Machine's power of suggestion though dreams was a success." A Large anthropomorphic frog with a crown, robe, and gaudy jewelry croaked. "Yet we know the machine cannot make people do things totally against their moral compass, it can only suggest them to do things that they wouldn't refuse to do anyway."
"Vell, let's try it, King Wart!" Mouser stepped forward, and fiddled with the controls on the machine. "I'll put an idea into ze Princess peach's dreams, und make her dye her hair red tomorrow morning! Make her look like zhat cute brunette princess from Sarasaland!""
"Very well, Mouser, but now we must turn our attention to our larger plans." Wart croaked, getting up from his throne. "Thanks to our little test, we have been able to see the Mario brothers in combat, and know what they are capable of!" He looked down at the mouse. "Are our forces already in the mushroom world ready?"
"Yavol, herr Wart. It vas a brilliant idea to send ze Shyguys, snifits, und bob-ombs to fight for Bowser, the rest of his army never suspected zhey vere all covert agents for you!" Mouser chuckled, twirling a bomb on his gloved finger. "We vill zoon be ready to open ze portal from Subcon, und invade ze mushroom world!"
