Chapter Fifty Four:

Seeing as Mare was the last one to jump and had made use of his Para-Shoot shoots to slow down his descent, he was also the last one to reach the bottom of the sewer pipe that served as part of the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. The ones that went down before him, with the exception of Aura, had their wings outstretched, making it rather obvious regarding how they slowed down their momentum enough to land safely.

"Don't look." Complained Mare in a tone of questionable seriousness, drawing the attention of the other members of the Peerage on the ground.

"You're a guy, Mare. Nobody wants to get in under your skirt… no matter how cute you look dressed in normally feminine clothing." Deadpanned Shalltear with one of her eyes twitching in annoyance.

"Thank you?" The fact that Shalltear's comment made Mare more than a little uncomfortable earned the Vampire a playful smack to the head from the Nature Mage's sister as said Nature Mage touched down, landing on the skeletons of various rodents, which predictably made crunching sounds with each step he made. "What was that?"

"Rats, mice and other similar little critters. Or at least what's left of them." Stated Aura cheerfully, rather unhelpfully ignoring her brother's discomfort, before spotting something in the distance. "Oh?" Following the Beast Tamer's gaze, it didn't take the rest of the Peerage long to spot what had caught Aura's attention.

"That shed skin must have belonged to one big snake." Commented Hermione, who proceeded to summon her 'Rig' and started moving her guns around cautiously.

"Uhm, guys?"

"Yes, Aura?"

"Would it be possible to try and avoid killing the Basilisk?"

"I feel I'm going to regret asking this question, but why?"

"I want it, as a Familiar."

"Don't you already have, like, five Familiars already?"

"Yup. Manny, Click, Chips, Buzz and Blue. I still want a Basilisk."

"You know what? We'll see about just making it submit, but no promises, Aura."

"Fair enough. Come on, let's go and get my soon to be pet!" Shouted Aura as she started to move into the depths of the cavern at the bottom of the sewer pipe with a noticeable skip in her step.

"Is your sister always that excited and cheerful about the idea of getting a new pet, or Familiar in this case, Mare?" Asked Shalltear, who was genuinely curious about it.

"Yup. And she always put her all into making sure that she not only had time for each pet but also that they were for battle if necessary on top of letting them know that they were loved by her. And myself, once I got used to them."

"Interesting." Muttered Hermione, drawing the attention of the Peerage as the Demon-Ship stepped on the bones of a rat.

"Careful there, Hermione. Sometimes, curiosity can be as much a curse as it is a blessing. Especially when the insight gained from it is better off untouched. There are some things that we're simply not meant to be aware of." Stated Luna ominously while twirling one of her crimson 'throwing stars' in her hand. "I would know. I occasionally get nightmares about it, though it's not always a bad thing."

"How so?"

"I got to have a brief encounter and exchange of words with a being that I think is not only a counterpart of our King but also another one capable of Multiversal travel, albeit in a rather convoluted fashion."

"And what convoluted fashion would that be?"

"The power to enter and exit nightmares at will."

"A Dream-Walker? Really?"

"Not even close. She can physically enter and interact with nightmares. Hence the title she introduced herself to me with. The Nightmare Huntress."

"That's… intimidating."

"While I'm glad that she seems to be a benevolent being, I certainly don't want to meet her again, be it in a nightmare, a dark alley in our waking world or a dark alley in a nightmare."

"Alright! Enough chatter, people. We're here." Stated Shalltear as the Peerage approached a rather highly decorated door. A door decorated with a snake motif. The entrance to the Chamber of Secrets proper.
