Cal stepped out of the black SUV, courtesy of Perry, along with Emily and Zoe. Emily, no longer able to contain her excitement squealed as she looked around the venue curiously while exiting the car.

"This is… an empty field?" Emily looked around puzzled as Cal and Zoe stood next to her, looking at each other in confusion.

Cal looked out into the open field, seeing just the top of a grass-covered hill, unable to see past it.

"That, it is luv." Cal said, squeezing Emily's shoulder and turning around to look at the driver who was exiting the car.

"Are we takin a pit stop here and then going to the show?" he asked, tilting his head dramatically to the side as he studied the driver.

"No pit stop, Doctor Lightman; we have arrived at the show." He opened his hand, signaling the hill.

"Please." He firmly stated, nodding at Cal with a small smile. Turning around, the driver opened the car door and left, leaving the group standing curiously in the field.

"I guess we are going this way." Cal gave a wide-eyed look to both Zoe and Emily as they all started walking up the hill.

"I would not have worn heels if I knew we were going to be walking in grass." Zoe looked down at her heels in annoyance.

"You could always take them off to walk, mom." Emily gave her mother a wide-eyed, challenging look.

"Ah yes, but that would ruin my outfit." Zoe chuckled softly, causing Emily to laugh along with her.

"Is Gillian already here?" Emily asked her father as they continued walking up the hill.

"Last I heard, she was already on her way." He responded shortly with a small, forced smile, thankfully going unnoticed by his daughter, who was looking at her footing rather than noticing her father's expression.

He had texted Gillian earlier to ask if she would like to ride down to the venue with them. Receiving a text from her saying, "After last weekend's event, I don't think being in a small, in closed space with Zoe and myself is a good idea for anyone involved."

I would have preferred her to come along with us, but I don't blame her for not wanting to spend any unnecessary time with Zoe. They have never gotten along, and after last weekend, I doubt they ever will. Zoe was out of line multiple times; she had no right to say what she did, even if it is how she "truly feels." That being said, I would have taken them bickering in the car together rather than Gillian traveling to the event with fucking Perry Lavigne. When she texted me that Perry had asked her to join him and Elizabeth on the way to the event since he already happened to be at her bloody house, mind you, that pit in my stomach returned. It hasn't really left since this morning, if I'm going to be honest with myself.

They continued walking until they arrived at the top of the hill, seeing the forest opening up into a huge gorge filled with wildflowers and a river flowing in the back. A walkway started at the top of the hill, much to Zoe's relief, traveling down the hill to a rather large runway. Cal watched as people made their way down the long walkway to their seats along the sides of the stage of the runway. Finally noticing the rather odd center of the stage, a large white rectangle hiding the runway from view. The high walls surrounded the edges, and a white cloth covered everything from site.

The hell is this? It looks like a giant present, just missing the bow.

"Well, this is interesting." Zoe looked out as they walked, staring at the stage.

"Crazy! I'm excited to see what's underneath!" Emily exclaimed, walking faster down the walkway.

"Chanel did a runway show in a grocery store a few years back. I get a feeling this is going to be crazy like that." She excitedly said as her father and mother tried to keep up the pace with her.

"Oh, theirs, Gil!" She exclaimed, walking even faster, leaving her parents behind in her excitement.

Cal watched as Emily found Gillian in the crowd, giving her a huge hug. Doing his best to catch up to his daughter, he watched as Emily backed away from the embrace, still holding her arms around Gillian. Smiling down at the younger woman, he could not keep the smile from his face as he took in the wholesome interaction between the two as they looked at each other with pure joy.

Finally approaching them, he took a moment to take in Gillian's outfit. A white long-sleeve dress with a mid-length collar, cut low. The dress landed mid-thigh with a partial slit, expertly tailored to her body. White stilettos to match with a delicate chain, much like his and Emily's shoes wrapping around her calves and stopping at her knee. Her hair was straight and sleek with a middle part, looking the true part of someone who belonged at these kinds of shows. He smiled appreciatively as he took her in, watching as Gillians eyes moved from Emily's to his with a wide smile and a nod at him.

"Didn't think you'd actually come." She teased him with a grin as Emily backed away from the two so they could be face-to-face.

"I love the suit." She added, looking him up and down appreciatively.

Did she just call me sexy again?

Opening his mouth to speak, he was interrupted by another voice approaching them.

"I love the fabric on this; it's one of my all-time favorites." Elizabeth walked up next to Gillian, placing her hands on Cal's lapels and feeling the fabric before dropping them. The interaction caused Cal to startle slightly from the other woman's touch, who smiled in return.

"I'm not really into the whole fashion world, but I've got to say you guys make a hell of a suit." He said, tucking his hands into his pockets and backing up slightly to make room for the unexpected Elizabeth appearance.

"Well, I'm very glad you could all attend. Mrs Landau." Elizabeth shook Zoe's hand firmly, and Cal watched as Gillian bit her lips back, looking away slightly.

Still pissed at Zoe I presume, and rightfully so.

"You must be Emily?" Elizabeth asked, looking down at Emily with a smile. Holding her hand out to shake her hand, Emily reached out, taking it firmly.

"that's right. I can't thank you enough for letting me attend." Emily cheerfully said, smiling up at the woman. "And the clothes I can't even express-"

"Your father and Doctor Foster here have done so much for us; it's the least we could do." Elizabeth interrupted, her face showing nothing but the truth in her words.

"The show should be starting soon, but I can have one of our assistants give you and your mother a tour before the excitement starts; is that something you would like to see?" she asked, looking at the younger woman and waiting for her response.

"That would be amazing!" Emily exclaimed, grabbing her mother's arm.

Elizabeth signaled to a nearby assistant, who walked over to the group, guiding Emily and Zoe to the back of the stage.

"The dress fits well." Cal cocked an eyebrow at Gillian as they watched the two women leave.

"That it does." Gillian said coyly, looking at Cal and holding his gaze as he stared back. A smug smile formed on his lips as he was about to speak.

"I preferred the other outfit." Elizabeth interrupted before Cal could speak.

"It was sheer." Gillians' eyes widened in disbelief as she ooked at Elizabeth.

"And?" the other woman asked with a cocky grin.

"You would see everything."

"And?" Elizabeth's smile widened even larger as she watched the faint blush form on Gillians cheeks.

"Not happening." She said firmly, raising her hands up in defiance.

"Next time it is then." She said with a wink. "Now that it's just us here, I wanted to thank you both….For everything. Perry isn't happy about what happened by far, but he is handling it far better than I could have imagined. He has never been one for forgiveness." Elizabeth looked gratefully at both of the partners after she spoke.

"We are really glad it worked out; we could tell how much you mean to one another." Gillian said kindly, putting her hand on Elizabeth's elbow.

Elizabeth quickly wrapped her arms around Gillian, hugging her. Backing away from the hug, she opened her hand to Cal to shake, who firmly took ahold of hers.

"I don't know what you guys said, but it really got through to him." She smiled warmly at the partners.

"I need to go check in with Perry, but I will be right back." She added taking a few steps away from them.

"Your coming back? Isn't the circus about to start?" Cal asked, tilting his head to the side and watching her.

"That is right, but Perry always likes me to watch the show as a spectator. I can give him honest feedback and make sure our shows always improve. I also need to get Mrs. Landau and your daughter back before everything kicks off." She nodded before walking away.

Gillian sat down, crossing her legs, and looked at the large white rectangle with curiosity. Cal sat next to her, slouching in his chair, his arm slung around the other seats. Titling his head to the side to look at her, he couldn't help but ask.

"You, Eva, figured out what it was about Pera?"

"Pardon?" She pulled her eyes away from the stage to look at him.

"well… What it is that you saw that spiked your curiosity…" He watched as she studded him carefully. "I'm just curious myself, with all the time you two have spent together, if you've been able to figure It out yet." He rambled quickly, seeing the recognition in her eyes as his words came pouring out.

"All the time we have spent together?...This wouldn't have anything to do with the fact Perry drooped by my house unannounced, now would it?" She asked, reclining in her seat and turning her crossed legs to point at him with her heel.

Well shit, either I lie and risk her bloody well seeing that or tell her the truth and admit yes that is infact what I was dwelling on.

"Well, your little science experiment has stuck in my mind….Anything that spikes your interest enough to lead a man on, just to find the truth differently peaks my interest, luv." He watched as she looked away, showing a brief moment of guilt before looking back at him.

"I don't know, actually. Getting to know him more, I'm questioning what I did see. Maybe my reading was off."

"What do you think you saw?" he said, leaning in closer to her.

"….a propensity for violence." She spoke softly but firmly, keeping her voice low.

She thinks she saw this man's desire for violence, and her fucking brilliant idea was to flirt her way to getting to know him more? A man she believes to be violent… unfucking believable.

"I…" he exhaled harshly, balling his hand in his fist before speaking. Controlling his breath, trying to think of something to say that wouldn't cause a fight.

"I know what you're thinking…Why would I try to get closer to someone who I believe to be of a violent nature? Is that right?"

"In kinder words, then, I was thinking, but yes…. It was foolish-"

"Foolish, says the man who got roped into a bank heist. Foolish says the man who got close to a thief just to let her get away. You have some nerve." She said keeping her voice down but harsh and angry.

"Not what I meant, not entirely… Just… why didn't you tell me?" He said defeat, moving his arm around the chair. Folding them in his lap as he tilted his body closer to hers.

"I was trying to figure out what I saw… It took some time to put my finger on it. If I had told you, you would have reacted entirely differently on this case... More critical of him. Which would have made him defensive and act differently, and that's not what I wanted; I wanted to know the truth and his true nature."

"And did you get to see Pera's true nature, huh?" He could feel the bitterness of the words on his tongue as he spoke.

"Your unbelievable." She said shaking her head and looking away quickly.

"It's a fair question, darling…. Have you seen anything to further prove your first assessment?" Leaning in even closer, his knees brushed against hers as he stared at her.

"I think… what I saw, might have been a fantasy or desire to act out violence on those whom he deems just." She exhaled, her anger at him gone, replaced by deep thought as she looked away, blinking and thinking carefully. "When he found out about my teacher, he showed it; he showed a desire for violence when he spoke of Mr. Miloy…And great protectiveness… for someone he barely knew because of what happened to me…" the last word dripped of sadness as she shook her head, looking back up at him.

"When he found out about Robert, I saw it again, but he did not act on it. He quickly hid it and handled the situation in a calm enough manner... I don't think he is inherently violent. Maybe he fantasizes about handling situations differently and acting out those violent thoughts in them… Maybe that's what I saw."

The night Perry and I went out, I saw it myself. The same look she is talking about. I thought it might have been amplified by the alcohol, but when Miloy was having a stroke, Perry wanted him to die. Then again so did I. Maybe we both desire violence. Maybe Gillian couldn't put her finger on what exactly she saw because she sees it in me so often. How many times have you wanted to Handle a situation with violence? How many times have you let that violent nature get the best of you?

Pulling his mind from his thoughts, he saw a pang of guilt pass across her features again.

"What's got you feeling guilty, luv?"

"I feel badly for playing him… for assuming what I saw. After getting to know him, he's a good man. And I thought the worst when I saw a flicker of something…concerning. Maybe after years of seeing all the lies we see, I'm losing my faith in humanity. I'm assuming the worst rather than the best, like I used to." She said sadly looking down.

"Darling, the fact you feel guilty negates that. As a member of the cynic society." He placed his hand on his chest, feigning earnest, causing her to chuckle softly. "You're not being a cynic; you have just seen the worst in a lot of people. You just see the world as it is and as it could be. But you always end up seeing the best in people at the end." He watched as her eye brows knitted in surprise and affection as a soft smile ghosted her lips.

"Thank you, Cal." She leaned over and kissed him gently on the cheek, causing a cheeky grin to creep into his face.

"Now that your science experiment is over, does that mean you're done flirting with the poor man? Bastard thinks he has a bloody chance." He laughed softly, waiting for her to join in, but saw her face show understanding making his stomach flip.

Shit

"That really bothers you, doesn't it?" She leaned even closer in, their faces a few inches apart, as she bit her lower lip.

"Well, he could be a violent man and all," he quickly said flippantly before being cut off by her.

"I just told you about that… And it bothered you long before you knew that didn't it?" She tilted her head softly, her smile getting wider.

"dad! The show is about to start!" Emily called out from the walkway, running to her seat. Elizabeth and Zoe were trailing behind her.

Sitting next to her father, she smiled widely in excitement at him, then over to Gillian, who gave her one in return. Moving away from Cal and sitting back in her seat, she looked out onto the stage.

Cal slid his arm around Emily's shoulder, squeezing her.

"Did you enjoy yourself, luv?"

"Yes, it was so amazing. Mr. Lavigne showed me a couple items from the collection." She smiled widely at her father before turning her head and whispering in his ear. "Want to tell me why your cheeks are lightly flushed? You two seemed awfully cozy before I walked up."

Zoe walked in front of them, setting on the opposite side of Emily, as Elizabeth sat next to Gillian.

"It's hot in here, is all." He scoffed, looking away and onto the stage.

"Dad, we are outside."

"Shhh, it's starting." He pointed at the stage as the large white fabric was pulled away from the walls of the runway.

The fabric tugged along until it revealed its hidden secret underneath. A glass rectangle incasing the entire stage.

"Is that… the cube?" Gillian whispered to him as her eyebrows shot up in confusion and surprise as she shot a glance over at Cal.

"more of a rectangle, I'd gather… What is all this?" He whispered to her and Elizabeth.

"Perry took some inspiration from your integration room. The day he saw it, he was already drafting designs; he changed the entire show after seeing it. I hope you don't mind." She said with a nod as the lights kicked on inside the cube, shining brightly as music began. The sun was getting low as the rest of the field was covered in a warm golden glow.

Models began walking the runway, posing at the end for the cameras, turning, and leaving the stage. Many models and designs later, a model appeared walking onto the runway holding a bat. Pausing at the end of the stage, she stood for photos and then proceeded to hit the glass in front of her. One hard hit, turning, then leaving the stage. The hit caused spider-web-like cracks throughout.

Audience members recoiled in shock , a few yelled from surprise.

Bloody hell was that? Glass was already weird; now this? Maybe he does like the fantasy of violence…

Another model appeared holding a metal pipe, again ending the run with a hit. Hitting a different spot in the wall, causing more cracks and glass to break free.

Another and another model walked out, different items in hand, and bashed the glass.

Perry walked onto the runway last, wearing one of his impeccable suits, looking sharp and sophisticated. A model walked out on the other side of the runway. His final design, the grand finally, he held her arm as they made their way to the end of the runway. Reaching into his suit, he pulled out a baton from his jacket. Smacking the glass with all of his strength, causing it to bust out in the middle.

The lights on the runway turned off, causing the stage to become dark. The sun was peaking over the hill, causing the only light to appear on the stage to come from the cracks and broken pieces of glass of the cube. Letting the dress only be lit by the obstructed light, making it look almost ethereal and glowing from the sun's rays.

The audience stood quickly to applaud, cheering loudly, as Perry bowed. Cal stood after everyone beside him did, clapping slowly along with them. He looked over at Zoe and Emily, who looked amazed by the show, clapping cheerfully. Looking to the other side, he looked at his partner. She was clapping but looked puzzled, deep in thought.

"Ya know, I've never been to one of these things, but that was… unexpected." He said, leaning over to her and speaking near her ear.

"I've never seen anything like that… i'm trying to process what it means." She pondered, looking out at the now-destroyed cube.

Models began walking onto the stage for the final walk. Perry smiled proudly at his designs, looking over to Elizabeth in the crowd, waiting for her reaction.

Elizabeth nodded proudly and smiled widely at him as she continued clapping. Perry looked next to her at Gillian, and seeing her puzzling expression, he held out his hands showing the glass. Nodding to her, before putting his hands together bowing at her. Turning away he bowed again to the audience, leaving the stage with the models.

"That was amazing!" Emily exclaimed to her dad. "Did you guys collaborate on the cube, eh, rectangle idea?"

"That we didn't, think we have a case to sue?" He half-joked looking at his daughter catching Zoe's gaze.

"Unless you have a patent on it, which I don't think you do….Then you would have to go ahead and sue the man who is forking over seven figures to you tomorrow. That might not be the brightest idea from Cal Lightman." Zoe cocked her eyebrow challengingly at him.

"Fair enough." He mumbled more to himself.

The crowd began to leave as the field started to empty. No longer filled by wealthy fashion goers but returning to its natural splendor. The sun finally set, causing darkness to start to fill the grounds. Soft lights turned on as the walkway lit up.

Zoe and Emily started walking onto the walkway. Cal waited for Gillian, who was still looking curiously at the stage.

"coming luv?" He held out his hand for her, pulling her from her thoughts. Quickly shaking her head with a soft smile, she grabbed his arm and walked to the walkway as well. Elizabeth joining behind them.

"Did you enjoy the show?" Elizabeth asked, looking between the two.

"Yeah, it was amazing… you both are very talented artists." Gillian turned around to smile at Elizabeth, who looked proudly back at her.

"Breaking the glass was an interesting touch…Care to explain what all that was about? I neva did finish that fine art class in college, so it's beyond my comprehension."

"Oh, you took fine art?" Gillian teased him letting go of his arm.

"I think it can be interpreted many ways, honestly. Everyone is going to take something different out of it. That's the great thing about art." Elizabeth said as they finally arrived at the top of the hill. Two black SUVs waited for the group.

The driver opened the door as Zoe stepped in, and Emily ran quickly over to Gillian, hugging her tightly before taking a seat in the car. The driver closed the doors as he opened the last for Cal, waiting for him to enter.

"I get art being interpreted differently by others and all that, but what was the forethought? I'm rather curious." He walked closer to Elizabeth, searching her face.

"Well the whole idea was rather last minute. He told me after his conversation the other day with you two that the idea took on a life of its own. He said something Doctor Foster said gave him the idea." She opened her palm at Gillian.

"which was?" Gillian puzzled.

"That's how the light shines in." Cal looked down, then at Gillian, seeing the understanding on her face. "You have a way with words, luv." He gave her a soft smile.

"I didn't think he would take it literally." She shook her head with amusement.

"I think Perry listens very carefully to what you have to say, Doctor Foster… We are surrounded by vapid, nonsensical people who care more about image than anything else. It's a rarity if someone has something to say that means more than the topical nonsense. More then likely why he likes you both so much."

"you ready?" Zoe yelled out, causing Cal to roll his eyes.

"she's calling." Gillian teased.

"Sure you don't want to drive back with us, luv?" he asked, hopeful.

"Oh, I'm sure." She gave him a knowing grin.

"plus I Gillian here I'd eat her out tonight- I mean take her out to eat tonight." Elizabeth smiled widely causing Gillian open her mouth in shock.

Cal felt his eyes trying to escape from there home as they bugged out widely in surprise. Staring wildly at the woman he saw the same shocked expression on Gillians face followed by a small amount of annoyance.

Il give it to Elizabeth she doesn't stop trying.

"What?! English is a very difficult language I have you know." Elizabeth faked sincerity before continuing to speak. "I'm hungry, I know you are." She pointed at Gillian. "Perry fitted these outfits so snug you can't eat wearing them. So dresses off-food on." She winked at the two partners.

"Your night seems far funner, room in your car for one more?" He joked causing Elizabeth to chuckle, Gillian smirked to herself with a shake of the head. "Perra joining for dinna?" he questioned Elizabeth.

"No, after big shows like this he likes his solitude. We will be at your office tomorrow don't you worry." Elizabeth signaled to her driver who proceeded to get out of the suv and open the doors for the women.

"Thank you for attending Doctor Lightman. Perry was over joyed that you came to see his work. We have seen so much of your work he wanted you to see ours." She helped out her hand to shake his hand. Turning around and taking a seat in the car.

"I should get going, have a good night, Cal." Gillian put her hand on his chest petting it softly.

"I could always join you if you want? Prevent Elizabeth from making any un wanted moves and all." He teased leaning in closer to her.

"I'm a big girl Cal, I can say no all by myself. Enjoy your night." She removed her hand smiling softly at him, taking a few steps back and walked to the car taking a seat.

Would enjoy my night far more if I was with you. What are you gonna do jump in and Go with her? I'm sure Zoe would have my head, Emily on the other hand would be thrilled….

"night luv." He said to her as the driver closed her door. He walk to his own Vehicle shutting the door behind him as the car took off into the night.
