Chapter 2: Pretending to Live Without a War

Wolfram was having a bad day.

He seemed to be having a lot of those ever since his botched heist at I-Island. He never should have accepted All For One's offer for a second Quirk. Oh, well, a thing of the past.

What was sending him into a pissy mood now was the fact that two Villains had infiltrated his base and even got past his goons, and were now, in his office, along with him.

Just wonderful.

"Well, if it isn't two of Nine's former goons," he said, looking at the redhead chick and the bandage dude. Offering them a bowl, he asked, "Want candy?"

No response.

"Sorry to hear about what happened to Nine. Then again, it was ages ago. All those consolations have probably gotten old, am I right?" he joked.

They remained silent, glaring at him.

"Look, I'm quite different from a bunch of first-year Hero students, so the whole "silent intimidation" thing really isn't making me afraid," he answered honestly.

"Everyone is afraid of something," Slice said, getting closer.

As Mummy grabbed one of the candies from the bowl, Wolfram decided to cut the shit. "Look, given your past, I know that you two tend to be more followers, not leaders. I know you're not here for business, or are the man in charge. And I only deal… with the man in charge."

CRASH!

"Augh!" Wolfram grunted, as he crashed into the wall.

The glass behind his window shattered, and he was thrown to the hallway. Gathering his bearings, he saw this… thing… creep out of his doorway. It was big and green, and it kinda looked liked the result if what would happen if a jolly green robot fucked a Nomu.

In short, straight-up nightmare fuel.

"There is no "man" in charge…" it said, kneeling over him. "Let's talk business."

Izuku Midoriya was having a good day.

After giving Wolfram a minor ass-whooping to show the Villain he meant business, Wolfram had one of his lackeys show them the goods, hidden behind the fake walls. The things that made UA become a castle in the sky during the final days of the Paranormal Liberation War.

"Propulsion jets," Deku said, as he tossed some of the tech to Mummy.

"You know it came at a great personal cost," Wolfram said. "It's worth billions."

"Heh," Deku chuckled as he turned off his cameras. Looking into the internet, he could see all of All Might's assets, along with those of Detnerat, seized by the HPSC. Quickly stealing or selling off the money, he had enough funds to pay off the Villain in a few seconds. "Now so are you."

As Wolfram's little sidekick, Swordkil or something, checks their phone to see the payments, Deku continued, "It's all under your dummy holdings. I know most would find finance rough, but it's pretty easy for me. Like I always say, "Enjoy your win. It'll never happen again." "

However, Wolfram looked up at Deku and said one word. "Dynamight."

The machine looked at him with a dead stare. "What?"

"Katsuki Bakugou says that on TV. You're with them," Wolfram accused him.

That made Deku angry in an instant. "What?! I'm not… I'm not!"

Grabbing Wolfram by the arm, the machine was glad that he decided to make this version of his body out of plasteel. It made Wolfram's Quirk useless. From the corner of his artificial eye, he could see Swordkil turn one of his arms into a blade, but Slice kept him in check.

Good. That gave Deku enough time to vent some frustrations of his.

"You think I'm one of the Heroes' puppets? The Commission's goons? I mean, look at me, do I look like Dynamight to you?!" he asked, getting angry. "BAKUGOU IS NOTHING!"

SLICE!

"AUGH!"

Deku didn't notice it, but it seemed that he had accidentally sliced off Wolfram's arm. He needed to get his rage under control. But later. He still had more to do with that piece of shit.

Faking sympathy, he winced at the wound, saying, "I'm sorry, I'm… ooh… I'm sure that's gonna be okay, I'm sorry. It's just you don't understand… DON'T COMPARE ME TO BAKUGOU!"

WHAM!

While the Villain was still stunned, Deku kicked the bastard in the face, sending the fucker tumbling down the stairs. "It's a thing with me. Bakugou is… he's a sickness!"

"Aww, Izuku… you're gonna break your best friend's heart."

The machine turned around, its faceplates indicating rage, as he saw… him. Katsuki Bakugou. Accompanied by the No. 1 and No. 2 Heroes, Lemillion and Shoto, respectively.

"If I have to, I will," Deku said, keeping his cool.

"No one has to break anything," Shoto said.

"Clearly, you've never made an omelet."

"He beat me by one second," Lemillion joked, before turning to Deku, his face serious. "Deku, I know you think of us as the bad guys, but you can still walk away from this –"

"Bleaugh!" Deku scoffed. "Lemillion. One For All's righteous wielder. Pretending you can save everyone. I can't physically throw up in my mouth, but if I could, I would be doing it right now."

"If you believe in a safer world, then walk away, and let us keep it," Shoto said.

"I think you're confusing safety with the status-quo…"

"Uh-huh, yeah right," Dynamight said. "What's the floating tech for?"

In response, Deku began to monologue, while his weapons got ready. "I'm glad you asked that, Kacchan, because I wanted to take this time to explain my evil plan… NOT!"

VRRR!

In an instant, Bakugou got grabbed by Deku's telekinetic grip for a few seconds. It was inspired by his mother's Quirk, and with the use of some minor support equipment, it was now able to grab anything his hands pointed to, including one of the top Heroes.

BRAAA!

Ooh, the concussive blast, that was a good one. Fatal to the average civilian, concentrated rays of light would burst from his fingertips. But for someone like Bakugou, it would only throw them into the wall before he got back up again. Resilient little bastard.

As Slice and Mummy engaged Lemillion and Shoto, Deku activated his flight thrusters on his legs and headed straight for Bakugou, who used his explosions to propel himself towards the green robot. The two proceeded to have an aerial flight within the building.

VRRR!

SLAM!

BRAAA!

The fight mostly consisted of Bakugou evading Deku's weapons, using his explosions to do some quick mid-air acrobatics. Over in the distance Deku could hear Wolfram (somehow he was still alive) ordering his minions to fire on the Heroes. Should keep the Heroes occupied.

BOOM!

BOOM!

Bakugou fired off two explosions at point-blank in Deku's face, disorienting the cameras in his eyes for a bit. When the static faded, he could see the No. 3 Hero tackling him straight out of a window. Deku used his telekinetic grab once more to knock him around, but –

BAM!

…he was ceremoniously beaten straight into a wall.

As he looked up, he could see Bakugou's hands facing towards the machine, ready to blast him if he tried anything funny. "Uh, the support gear is getting away."

"And you're not going anywhere."

"Of course not, I'm already there," he smiled. "You'll catch on. Eventually."

"Grrr…" Bakugou growled, before shouting, "AP SHOT!"

The last thing Deku saw before hopping to his new body was lots of fire.

Ochako groaned at the situation.

As she walked through the halls of her Hero Agency, ordering around her sidekicks, she thought over the past few days. First off, Hatsume and Bakugou of all people created some sort of killer robot form the Terminator movies, and now, it recruited the Nabu Island Villains.

To make matters worse, the three of them had been documented with stealing a bunch of support equipment and technology on both I-Island and UA's level, which meant that they were up to something big. Well, the good news is that Bakugou destroyed the killer robot.

Hopefully, that would stall the metal bastard a few days longer, buying the Heroes enough time to figure out where his copies are being made, and shutting the fucker down completely.

She told the rest of her sidekicks to go home already and get some sleep. If the situation was gonna get as bad as Ochako predicted, they were all going to be working on minimal sleep pretty soon. Opening the door to hr office, she figured she could call her parents before –

"Scream, and your entire agency dies."

Ochako let out a small gasp, as she saw this… monster. Bakugou and the others had already filed the report from their battle a few hours earlier. This Deku program… it was getting stronger, and had already gotten itself a new body. But Bakugou destroyed it.

Looks like it had a few back-ups.

She mulled over her options. She had no idea how many of those robot goons Deku had on hand with him, and added to the fact that Slice and Mummy weren't in her office, there was a good chance that they were outside of her building, waiting for Deku's command.

She was cornered. All she could do was comply.

"I could have killed you the night we met, Uraraka," it said. "I didn't."

"Do you expect a thank you note?" she hissed.

"I expect you to know why," Deku said. "The WHA files. I want them."

"I can't access the WHA files," she lied. "I don't have the clearance –"

"Oh, yes, you do. You're the No. 8 Hero of Japan, of course you have the clearance," Deku said, approaching her, and handing her a tablet. "And you will do it. Or else…"

Ochako looked at the tablet Deku gave her, and saw that it was a security feed of a building. Slice and Mummy were in front of one of the doors, and that's when her eyes widened.

They were in front of her parents' apartment door.

Mei sighed, as she tinkered with some old junk from her lab.

Yesterday had been a bust. Sure, Bakugou managed to blow up Deku's main body, but his two lackeys escaped, along with whatever tech that they were buying from Wolfram.

And now, the green monster's minions are still reading facilities all over the world, and the Heroes can't stop them. It was frustrating, really. Every time they managed to catch one, it would blow itself up. All she could do now was tinker until someone called her.

"Do me a favor… try not to bring that thing to life."

Mei turned around to see… Enji Todoroki, the former No. 2 Hero, Endeavor.

He was still going for the whole "I'm old" look he began adopting after the end of the Paranormal Liberation War. The beard of actual facial hair (not flames) was on his face, and while he couldn't do anything about the scar, the cosmetic eye patch was totally a fashion choice.

Looks like someone didn't take semi-retirement all that well.

"It's the base of a coffee maker," Mei said. "I can't bring it to life without a CPU, and –"

"That's not the point," Endeavor said. "You're a brilliant support engineer, Hatsume. When people say that you're the next David Shield, they're wrong. You're better than him. But… this? I know that you had good intentions, but going so far as to create that thing?"

"Good intentions? I guess you're right," she muttered. "You know how many Pros I knew died in the war? Fifty-six. And there were still hundreds more that died. And thousands of civilians died, too. I wanted to prevent that from happening again… and I failed spectacularly."

"That's not true," Endeavor said. "Deku may have potential plans to cause lots of harm, his casualty rate is still lower than the PLF's. They're not the same, and he can still be stopped, and he knows that. He knocked the Heroes on his case out so he could buy himself time. And I already talked with Nedzu. I know that he's apparently building something."

"What about Deku himself?" a new voice asked.

It was Kendo who asked, as she entered the lab, alongside Shinso and Iida.

"That's the easy part. His hollow men are everywhere. That doesn't help us get an angle at his plans, however. And oddly enough, he isn't interested in nuclear launch codes."

"Yeah, I mean given what some Quirks can do, nukes are nothing," Shinso said. "Still, I would have hoped that we had more information than just that. We're still stuck with his flying castle."

"Trust me, information gathering has always been hard," Endeavor said. "And now thanks to that metal man, it's even harder. All we have now is our wit and our will to save the world. Whether or not Deku admits it, we are the ones in the way of his mission, and his mission is a "safer" world. We have to stop him. But the question is: How is he gonna try to pull it off?"

"Deku is trying to build a weapon… but what is the target?" Iida asked.

"Villains themselves?" Kendo suggested.

"No… not just Villains…" Mei realized. "Heroes, too! Everyone on both sides!"

"How is he supposed to pull that off?" Shinso asked. "It's not like he could access the World Hero Association files for every single registered Hero and Villain on the planet."

"Not via hacking, no," Mei said. "But if he forced someone to give him the access codes…?"

"Wait…" Kendo gasped. "Has anyone heard from Uraraka since last night?"

Ochako may have looked calm on the outside, but on the inside, she was panicking.

She knew she had no choice. If she refused to give Deku the access codes, her parents would die. But if she gave them, it would be one more complete step in his plan.

All she could do was buy time.

"I'm entering the HeroNet now," she said, doing it as slowly as possible. "Once I'm in, I'll be able to access the World Heroes Association registries for every person of interest for you. Soon –"

"How soon?" the mechanical menace asked. "I don't mean to be pushy."

"Well, aren't you impatient?" she hissed. "There are no shortcuts –"

"You're stalling," Deku called her out. "I know for a fact that the only thing you have to do is bypass the security lock on the main site in order to get me what I want. Delaying me won't help you. If you keep doing it, I'll be forced to take more… drastic measures."

Ochako could feel the sweat building up. "What sort of drastic measures…?"

"You have one hundred and fifty seconds to give me what I want, or your parents will receive their surprise visit," the robot said. "Try and call for help, and the same outcome will occur."

"What?! No! You can't –!"

"Your time starts now. 149… 148… 147… 146… 145…"

This machine was insane. Genuinely insane. He had just given the brown-haired Hero five minutes to get the job done or suffer. She could no longer stall. She had no choice.

"129… 128… 127… 126… 125…"

She inserted her username and password, and was immediately on the site. Access worldwide registries? Yes. Heroes or Villains? Both. All classifications and rankings? Yes.

"90… 89… 88… 87… 86…"

Download all to flash drive? Yes, yes, yes!

Downloading… process will take… Two minutes?!

"60… 59… 58… 57… 56…"

"Stop! I did what you asked! I can't control when it will be done! STOP COUNTING!" she shouted, but was met with only the monotonous sound of the robot counting down.

"45… 44… 43… 42… 41…"

She had less than a minute.

"PLEASE! STOP!"

"32… 31… 29… 28… 27…"

The No. 8 Hero closed her eyes, as she began to cry. She had failed. She had betrayed both her Heroes and friends, and led her parents straight to their deaths. She failed.

"10… 9… 8… 7… 6…"

I'm sorry, everyone…

"3… 2… 1… Time's up."

DING!

"Huh?" Ochako opened her eyes, to see that the screen on her computer said that the download was… complete? Her office was quiet. There was no order from Deku to kill her parents, she couldn't hear any screams over his radio. It was all… quiet. Far too quiet.

"Well done, Uravity," Deku said, as he grabbed the flash drive. "Your parents will live."

Ochako could feel her breath come back to her. Her parents were still alive. A wave of emotions washed over her, from relief to anger towards Deku. But the biggest ones were emptiness and exhaustion. She wanted this nightmare to be over with already.

"Please… leave…" she said, her voice hoarse.

"No, not yet," Deku said. "There's still one more thing I have to take with me."

GRAB!

"You."

"What…? Why…?" Ochako asked, as she was held by her neck.

"Your parents were never going to die," the machine said, its eyes staring at her. "This was simply a test for me to see what do you value more: Your parents, or your allies. And you chose your parents. Now let's see where your allies' loyalties truly rest."

"What are you… talking about…?" she choked out.

"I'm curious, do all Heroes think only about themselves and what they care for? Do they put their personal interests and ideals over their duties? The need to complete the mission?"

"Duty? You… threatened… my parents…"

"I threatened two people, compared to all of the Heroes and Villains I'm going to kill later on. You chose which ones you were going to save. Although, I suppose it would be reasonable for you to save your parents compared to saving thousands of strangers. Typical humans."

"You're a monster…"

"No, I'm not. I simply know what must be done. I can do what you Heroes couldn't do. This world can't exist as long as Heroes and Villains exist within it. So, I will purge all of you from it. The only people left will be the citizens, the average Joes… the extras. "

"You're insane…"

WHAM!

With a swift punch to the face, Uravity was unconscious. Tuning into his radio, Deku said, "Slice, Mummy, leave the premises. I'm heading out with what I came for myself."

"And the rest of the Uravity Hero Agency?" Slice asked over the radio.

"Eliminate them."

"Understood," Mummy said, as the channel line was cut.

Hauling the unconscious Uravity over his shoulder, Deku murmured to himself. "They'll understand… when they see, they'll understand… I just need a little more time…"

"This is Lemillion, flying out of the Uravity Hero Agency," Mirio buzzed into his radio.

"This is Hatsume, we hear you, Lemillion. Did you find Uraraka?"

"Negative, just a lot of downed sidekicks. Medics are on their way now."

"Deku couldn't have gone far. You need to track him down, back-up will follow you."

"Understood," he said, as he boosted Float at a higher percentage, gaining speed. At a higher altitude, he looked around the city, hoping that he could find… bingo. A big green bastard. And to make matters better, or worse, he was carrying an unconscious Uravity.

ZOOM!

Dashing down towards his target, he wound up his arm, ready to smash the metal monster to bits, only to suddenly feel his left side hurt, like he just got hit by a truck.

No, wait. Scratch that. He did get hit by a truck.

Turns out, in the right urban scenario, Mummy was a powerhouse. That was especially true now, as the No. 1 Hero felt the power of being hit full-force by a bandage-covered semi.

BOOM!

Getting out of the wall he was launched into, Mirio groaned. It looked like Deku was prepared for any Hero, including him. Looking up, he saw the machine's green eyes staring down at him.

"You know what Uravity has in her head?" the machine asked, as it used the thrusters on its legs to get farther away. "The power to make real change, and that terrifies you."

"I wouldn't exactly call it a comfort," Mirio quipped back, as he tried to focus on the Deku's two minions at the moment. Grabbing one of the pieces of broken debris, he launched it towards Slice, while she launched her hair like missiles, while Mirio dodged them using Permeation.

BRAAA!

Getting out of the way of one of Deku's concussive blasts, he launched himself towards Deku again, trying to get Uravity out of his iron grip (Sir Nighteye would kill him for such a lame joke), only to get knocked back by another one of Mummy's inanimate objects.

Come on, where's everyone else?!

"FLASHFIRE FIST!"

FWOOM!

The fabrics on Mummy's inanimate objects turned to ash, as Lemillion smiled. His back-up had finally arrived, and it couldn't have been anyone better. "How are thongs going?"

"Shoto! Glad to see you decided to join the party!"

"You focus on Deku!" the No. 2 Hero said. "I'll handle his lackeys!"

"Right!" he nodded, powering up One For All to charge at the machine, only to feel himself… levitating? No, wait, Deku was using his telekinetic tech to float the ground beneath him.

He's trying to get me to minimize the area I have to fight him!

Activating Float once more, Lemillion played his game.

Most of his attacks were now limited to the ones he could do mid-air, but Deku was still holding Uraraka, which meant that he could only attack with his free hand.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Shoto was busy getting tag-teamed by Slice and Mummy, who decided that the best way to deal with him was to minimize the space he could use. Decent strategy, if it weren't for the fact that Shoto could still form a glacier beneath his feet.

Which is exactly what he did.

BOOM!

As he went up to the air thanks to his tower of ice, Slice and Mummy climbed up the ice pillar, readying their Quirks. Alright, Shoto, think. You have a limited space, and –

"HEADS UP!"

"Huh –? WHAT?!"

BOOM!

Jumping off his ice spiral, Shoto watched in shock as the flying metal body of Deku crashed into his glacier, cracking his glacier into pieces, and knocking off both Slice and Mummy.

"Togata! What the hell?!"

"What? I gave you a "heads up" and everything!"

Shaking his head, Shoto said, "Whatever, where's Uraraka?!"

"She's over in the building next to us," Mirio said, pointing towards the downed girl. "You try and get her out of here, I'll take care of these guys if they try and get up again!"

"Right!"

With Shoto gone, Mirio turned back around to see that Deku was getting up again, because of course he was. Rushing towards him, Mirio punched him in the face, hoping that a strong enough punch would be enough to keep the machine down, while Deku returned the favor.

The two of them kept exchanging blows, one after another, until –

"ENGINE BOOST!"

WHAM!

Deku reeled back from the impact, as Mirio smiled at his new back-up. "Ingenium!"

"We don't have time!" Iida shouted. "Battle Fist and I are here to assist Shoto!"

"What? What do you mean? He just left with Uraraka!"

"Didn't you hear his radio call?! He said he was under attack by Deku's soldiers!"

"What?!" Mirio shouted, putting his finger up to his ear. "But my radio would have –"

He couldn't feel his radio.

"Looking for this?" Deku chuckled, as he held out in his arm –

"My radio! How –?!" That's when it hit Mirio. He must have grabbed it while they were busy punching one another in the face. Was this his plan all along?

FWOOSH!

Before Mirio had a chance to say anything further, Deku activated his thrusters and flew away. Mirio was about to pursue him, when he heard Iida shout "URARAKA!"

Mirio gritted his teeth as he ran to catch up with Iida, who had reached the roof where a downed Shoto was, getting medical attention from Kendo. He could also see a defeated Slice and Mummy, and several robot parts, but no sign of Uravity. "What the hell happened?"

"Swarm of… robots… they got Uraraka…" Shoto gasped out.

"Don't move, you took a lot of nasty hits," Kendo said, as she used her Quirk to apply pressure on one of his bigger wounds. "Don't worry, you're gonna be fine, the medics are on their way…"

"Uraraka… I failed to save her…"

"You did your best," Kendo said, as she looked at everyone else. "We all did."

For some reason, everyone, even Kendo, didn't really believe what she said.

"Anything on Uraraka?" Hitoshi asked Hatsume.

"Haven't heard. She's alive, otherwise, Deku would be rubbing it in our faces," Hatsume said. "At the very least, we managed to capture Slice and Mummy, so Deku's lost his main muscle."

"Small mercies, I suppose," Yaoyorozu grumbled.

"Iida, is there any possible way she could have left us a message?" he asked.

"I don't know," Iida answered Hitoshi. "But I swear I'll find her."

As he watched Ingenium and Creati leave the lab, Hitoshi looked over at Hatsume, who seemed to be reading something. "I take it that you finally managed to recover your old code?"

"Yeah. Deku may have wiped my work, but I'm still me that he's dealing with," Hatsume said. "That being said, recovering the data is one thing, however, something is seriously bugging me."

"Oh? What's that?"

"The programming and protocols are all operating as they should," the pink-haired scientist said. "The murderous psychopathy wasn't caused by some mistake in my code, meaning…"

"That whatever personality Bakugou gave the AI was what created Deku," Hitoshi finished.

"Exactly," Hatsume said. "But I still don't get it. I told Bakuogu to picture the ideal person in his mind, someone who would be willing to defend everyone. Why pick a psychopath?"

"I dunno," the purple-haired Hero said. "Why don't we ask him?"

The first thing Ochako saw when she woke up… was metal.

Lots and lots of metal.

Wherever she was, it looked like a cross between a smelter furnace and a weapons factory, all of the bits and pieces being operated by a bunch of Deku's robot minions. Wonderful.

"I wasn't sure you'd wake up."

Turning her head towards the left, she saw the main boss himself, working on part of his little science project. He still looked scary, but the way he talked, he sounded… sad.

"I hoped you would. I wanted to show you. I don't have anyone else."

She remained silent.

"I used to think a lot about Heroes, and how cool they were. Saving people, making them feel safe, and being looked up to by everyone," Deku said. "I wanted to be one, to save people with a fearless smile, just like All Might. To say "I am here," and make them feel at ease."

"..."

"Instead, they'll look up in horror now, because of people like Bakugou," he said, approaching Ochako. "He and the rest of this rotten society have wounded me. I give them full marks for that. But, like Friedrich Nietzsche always said, what doesn't kill me –"

KRANG!

BOOM!

Ochako stared in horror as a claw rammed itself through the back of Deku's metallic skull, piercing his eyes and other facial parts. But what made it worse was when the claw ripped the head, and the rest of the body, into two, to reveal…

"...just makes me stronger."

It might have been the fact that Ochako was laying on the floor, but Deku's new body seemed taller. The metal teeth were now gone, in place of a screaming void of gray. The black hollow holes were also gone, now replaced with white, and traces of blue energy coming off of them.

There was no more red or yellow on any part of the robot. It was all green, black, and white. The base was still green, the forearms and hands completely white, with black stripes everywhere. It would have reminded Ochako of mecha anime if she wasn't so scared right now.

The new and improved Deku extended its arm and grabbed a sliding-like door, complete with rebar all over it, making it act like a prison cell door, and he locked it up.

Ochako was trapped down here.

Author's Note: Things just went from bad to worse, didn't they?

Anyway, for those who are new here, this is what happens next: I'll respond to the last chapters questions and comments. And before you ask, no, I don't provide context. If you want that, go to the original comment. Anyways, if you want to get noticed, leave a comment after the chapter. But enough about that! Let's see what comments we got!

Logical-Tadkins: I don't know who the Murder Machine is, but you have piqued my curiosity, I shall look them up! But the Ultron part is completely accurate. Glad you found this interesting, I hope you stick around until the end of the story!

Deathenglegamers1144: Hey. Yeah, it's been a while. I understand that some of my old fans won't be receptive to the new fandom, but I'm okay with that. And don't worry, I'll be back in Re: Zero before you know it! But I guess this is good-bye for now, at least.

Greyninja27: Glad you found that amazing. Also… hold up! You're the guy making the Paranormal Liberation Work reaction?! Dude, I'm a big fan of that! I guess that means that we'll be checking each other's works for constant updates now…

VinHD15: Yeah, yeah, you knew it was coming. You literally helped me decide who would get the ax in future chapters. You can stop doing that creepy laugh now.

ArthurDaen: Yeah, you pretty much nailed the description down pat. It's an Ultron-like entity with Deku's newfound hatred for Heroes. I hope you enjoyed this new chapter!

Tykronos: I hope this is still interesting for you.

But, yeah, that's all for comments this week!
