The Legacy of the Olympians

Heroes of the Next Generation

Chapter 9: Nova Olympia

"I am so happy that I get to work on you!"

"...You mean 'with' you, right?" Percy furrowed his brows. "Right?"

All Silena did was smile brightly and wrap measuring tape around his waist. The new Olympians needed to look their best and out of every designer working at BeaureGardian, it had been a no-brainer to specifically request Silena. The first half hour after her arrival was only hugs. Afterward, she got to work. Measuring all of them and then having sit-downs with them to interview them for their own vision for their costumes, before she would sit down and do her job.

"I'm proud of you, you know," Silena's voice was soft. "You're really doing it. Not that I doubted you, but… over the years, many people have claimed to, or even tried to, revive the Olympians. And you, you were a kid when you first claimed to do this. Now you're here, in Olympus."

"Y… Yeah," Percy cleared his throat, flushing a little. "I'm… Honestly, I'm proud of myself too. I always dreamed of doing this, but I… I do know what a big deal this is. I hoped I could do it, but I was also aware of all the hurdles and all the things I had to do."

Silena hummed and continued with her measurements. As she spread her hand over his chest, Percy caught sight of the stunning diamond ring on her finger. Her engagement-slash-wedding ring.

"So—o, how is life as Missus Beckendorf-Beauregard?"

Now it was her time to blush, with the most dreamy expression on her face. "I mean, we do both work too much. But… when we're at home, together, it feels… it feels like home. When I'm with Charlie, I feel at home. I don't think I could be any happier."

Warmth filled Percy's chest at that and for a second, he had to think of Jason and Nico. And of how at home they made him feel. Moving here, to New York again, had been a huge change in his life once more and living at the Empire State Building was honestly intimidating. But this too big apartment felt just right, as long as his boyfriends were at his side.

While his wife (his wife. What beautiful words to think) was taking the measures of everyone on the new Olympian team, Beckendorf was talking to them one by one to see about their weapons and protective gear. It would be a huge deal for BD Gadget to supply the new Olympians and he, personally, was happy to work with his old acquaintances. He hadn't been particularly close to most of them, them being younger than him and thus in a different grade and different circles. But Luke had been a friend, and Beckendorf had been very fond of Jake, Leo and also Percy.

"I know you all have weapons of choice that you've grown attached to and comfortable with over the past years," Beckendorf started, when he had everyone in a room. "However, there is always room for improvement, upgrades and also additional weapons and means of protection."

"Oh, I hear that," Leo was bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Though, on the long run, I will be in charge of our gear. But yeah, starting out with BD grade weapons makes me antsy."

"...Would not have been able to tell," Nico drawled, voice dry, as he watched Leo bounce.

"Don't be mean to him," Hazel swatted at him. "Let's talk to Beckendorf instead, mh?"

"I actually have a great idea for you in particular, Nico," Beckendorf smirked. "Wanna start?"

Nico perked up at that and nodded, quickly following Beckendorf to the other room to have some privacy to talk. He knew that Percy was currently getting measured by Silena in another room.

"We're working with many specialists," Beckendorf started. "Particularly with skilled magic-users that allow us to create incredible weapons. You have always had shadow-powers, but not as refined as Bianca. So I was thinking about a shadow-sword."

That really got Nico's attention. "What would that even be?"

"I'm speaking literal here. A sword made out of actual shadows, solidified by magic. It'd give you in particular an edge and the enchantment can heighten your own connection to shadows."

"Charles Beckendorf," Nico grunted. "If you weren't a married man, I would propose to you."

Charles laughed, a deep belly laugh. "I do think Silena would mind, yeah."

Jason took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment. His fingers curled around his lucky charm – an eagle holding a ball made of tiger's eye. Nico and Percy had bought it for him, specifically as a lucky charm for his auditions. So far, it hadn't exactly worked. He'd gone to about a dozen auditions in the past two weeks. For now, he took everything that he could audition for. There was no 'standard' that he set himself, no role beneath him. He was a total newbie to the scene, he just wanted to gather experience. He also tried not to bring his parents up, because he did want to do this on his own. He didn't want to wonder if he'd gotten his chance because of his actual talent or because someone wanted to be in the good graces of Beryl and Tristan.

"Jason Jupiter."

Jason startled as someone called for him. Okay. Time to go through this spiel again. He quickly followed to stand in front of the casting board. His nerves were still as bad as the first time.

"Hello, my name is Jason and I'm here to audition for the part of the elf servant."

"I'm sure you did great," Percy peppered Jason's face with kisses between each word.

"Ri—ight," Jason wiggled his nose a little. "I hope so. But I don't know."

"Well, we know," Nico grunted, wrapping one arm around Jason's waist.

It did warm Jason's heart that his boyfriends, despite being so busy assembling their team right now, didn't forget about Jason's life. They remembered every single audition he had and always asked how it went afterward. Sighing, he leaned into Nico.

"So, how are things going with you guys?"

"We got all our permits," Percy answered him, stretching his legs out over Nico and Jason's laps, resting his head against Jason's shoulder. "Everyone is an officially certified hero, the team is registered with the New York State Hero Alliance, our facilities are finally fully ready. We're… set. I think we actually are set. Once Beckendorf and Silena deliver their work, we have everything we need and we will be ready to… damn."

Percy swallowed hard. Sure, he'd been working toward this practically all his life. And sure, in the past two months, things had actually shaped up in a specific manner. But saying it out loud like that made it feel so much more immediate and real. He found himself clinging onto Jason a little.

"You don't need to be nervous, babe," Jason kissed the top of his head. "You'll rock this. You have been training for this for all of your life. You're ready. And you gathered a badass team around you to support you and stand by your side. You're not doing this alone."

Taking a slow breath, Percy felt himself relaxing. His eyes wandered past Jason to look at Nico and lock eyes with his other boyfriend. Jay was right. He wasn't alone.

Nico was usually very calm, but even his heart was hammering in his chest today. Today was the day. Nova Olympia was going to step into the spotlight. On their very first day, all twelve of them were present. And they all cleaned up so well in the new costumes Silena had designed for them. Though they were individual in accessory and colors, they shared the same style, making them look like an actual team. Though in Nico's opinion, Percy looked the best. His bodysuit was accentuated by the bronze chest armor, engraves with waves and sea-shells. The bodysuit was dark-blue fading to a full white toward his toes and his finger-tips, reminding of waves. Nico wanted to peel that costume off Percy right away and do other things with his boyfriend, but they had work to do.

"Today is our premiere day," Percy spoke up, drawing everyone's attention. "Obviously are we not off with a huge villain attack, because we can't time that. So we're going to patrol the city. Show our faces, familiarize people with us. Take care of whatever needs to be taken care of; no crime is too small, yeah? We're going to split up into five teams of two."

Luke nodded, regarding Percy. "Did you have pairs in mind, or are we free to pick?"

"No. I feel like patrol is a good start for us to mix things up some," Percy crossed his arms, looking so much like the leader he was. "I know everyone has those they're closest to and I've been watching over the past month that we've been here together and training, and I noticed that there are some who aren't exactly close. Hazel with Thalia, Leo with Nico, Annabeth with Frank, Reyna with Luke and Piper is going to go with me. That good with everyone?"

Neither Will nor Rachel were going out into the field. At least not today; in high stakes situations, Oracle would be best suited to be closer to them but otherwise, she was most useful behind the screens, overseeing everyone's fights and giving advise. And Will was first and foremost their healer; if the healer went down, the team was in trouble. So he wasn't going to be an active fighter unless needed, which suited him well too because it gave him more time to focus on his studies.

"Sounds good to me, boss-man," Leo grinned, saluting him.

"Oka—ay," Rachel twirled around on her chair. "I have access to all surveillance cameras in the city, which is very neat. So I'll be able to watch what is happening where you guys are. We divided the city into a grit and assigned each of you."

"We have our comms, and I want you guys to regularly check in so we can make sure nobody is in too big trouble. A situation can always escalate and we gotta have each other's backs," Percy paused for a moment. "Does anyone have any questions or complaints before we head out?"

Nobody spoke up, all either nodded or made affirming noises. Percy looked pleased, clapping his hands once before heading out first. Today was the day.

Jason grinned broadly as he put up the framed newspaper article. The announcement of Nova Olympia as New York's newest, own superhero team had already been put up, but this one was documenting their first day. A great shot of the ten active fighter members in full costume in front of the Empire State Building. Jason was tempted to draw little hearts around Nico and Percy, because holy shit did his boyfriends look hot in their superhero outfits.

"I am so—o proud of the both of you," Jason declared as he walked back over to them.

Percy ducked his head, flushing a little. He found it embarrassing that Jason hung those newspaper articles up, but he also thought it was endearing of him. Jason really was that proud of them.

"Now tell me all about it," prompted Jason when he sat down opposite them.

"Percy paired me up with Leo," Nico glared weakly at Percy. "And… I suppose I get it, I've never exactly fought at his side. He is… not my speed, when it comes to people. But we're on the same team now, we have to know each other's styles and work well with each other. I honestly think I have gained some respect for him, seeing him out in the field, actually saving people."

Jason grinned and leaned in to peck Nico's cheek, since Leo was Jason's best friend. And he knew Nico and Leo were never going to be best friends themselves, but he had always hoped his boyfriend and his best friend would get along better.

"I think it went well," Percy stretched long like a cat. "I think it brought the team closer, even if we didn't bag any big bad guys, we stopped some robberies and let our presence be known."

The Jackson Grace di Angelo home wasn't the only one with these newspaper articles framed. Paul hadn't had his chest this puffed out since his high-days of being Poseidon, just having locked away his arch-nemesis. It made Sally smile gently, though she had to admit that she felt the same pride swell in her chest. Their baby was all grown up, and he was keeping their legacy alive.

"Look at this," Paul patted the wall right next to the newest article they'd put up. "They call him the 'New Poseidon'! My son! The new Poseidon! 'Filling out big footsteps in the world of heroes'."

"Watch out, love, you may burst if you keep going."

Sally chuckled and kissed his cheek. Though it was true. Percy and about half his team had fought against Flamethrower – a mid-level fire-powered bad guy – and the way Percy had wielded the water. Sally, Paul and Tyson had watched it enraptured on the news. They'd seen him, as a teen at the academy, in training situation. But this was different. This was real. And Percy kept his cool and control. He had not just perfect control over the water he wielded, but also his team. Everyone listened to his orders, and his orders were good.

"This su—ucks," Tyson whined, kicking his legs back and forth where he sat on the kitchen table. "My brother is the biggest hot-shot new hero and I can't tell anyone. I want to tell everyone how awesome Percy is and that that's my brother. I know I can't, I wouldn't endanger him and us like that, but… I really wanna brag about my cool brother."

Sally laughed and walked over to her son to ruffle his hair. "We're proud of him too and I'm sorry you don't have friends you can talk about him to."

Because Sally and Paul could. The amount of times that Sally was now calling Maria di Angelo to talk about how amazing their sons were and about their latest acts of heroism was steadily increasing. If she was being honest, at this point, Maria may have become her best friend, having grown closer and closer ever since their sons had started dating.

There was a balance to be found, Hazel was still looking for it. She had her shop, the Golden Cauldron in Las Vegas, and it meant the world to her by now. This was hers. She had built it from the ground. But after two months of being part of Nova Olympia, she had to admit that she thrived being a hero. Naturally, living in Las Vegas, she could not limit her heroism to New York.

It had always been that way with the Olympians, that they had their own cities to protect but the main team was located in New York. Still, Hazel hadn't anticipated the stretch of being a local hero and part of a team. She was thankful for the shifts in which they worked in New York, but it was still a huge load of responsibility. The shop, being a single hero, part of the team.

The love, however? Sure, Las Vegas had its small-time local heroes, but Nova Olympia was national wide news – the successors of the Olympians – and Vegas was currently priding itself on one of their own being part of that team. It flushed Hazel to hear the way locals talked about her, so impressed by her magic, so proud to see Nova Olympia headlines featuring her. Ironically enough, her heroism had also boosted her shop – having a big time magic user as their poster hero had piqued people's interest in magic and driven more business to the Golden Cauldron, among others.

"You need to take more time for yourself," Lou Ellen said, voice gentle.

She approached Hazel from behind and rested her hands on Hazel's neck. Slowly, she started massaging the other witch. Hazel's eyes fluttered shut and she groaned pleased. This was good. Lou Ellen was good. She'd become one of the most important people in Hazel's life at this point.

"Tha—ank yo—ou," Hazel sighed contently.

"Yeah, yeah," Lou Ellen chuckled. "But that doesn't mean you can keep going like this. I mean it, you need to take more care of yourself. You're working too hard, Haze."

A pause, Hazel staring up at the ceiling. "It's tough though. I… I feel this obligation toward this city now. I get back from my shift in New York, and I feel like I need to solve all crime here, because I was gone. And then there is the shop too."

"Well, first of all, you got me to cover the shop," Lou Ellen flipped Hazel's nose gently. "And there are other heroes protecting Las Vegas. Think of it that way, Las Vegas was protected before you became the Golden Witch. Yes, your additional protection is a great help – this is a high-target for criminals. Something about a lot of alcohol and big shot casinos that attracts crime. Strange, right? But still, it worked without you, that means… you don't have to do it all alone. Rely on the heroes that were here before you. Otherwise they may also feel… insulted."

Oh. That was something Hazel hadn't even considered yet. That her injecting herself into every crime might make the established heroes feel patronized. Which was the last thing she wanted. Okay. Perhaps she needed to take a step back, perhaps she also needed more open communication with the local heroes to make sure they could work together. Her face softened when she looked up at Lou Ellen. The punk witch was a much bigger help than she knew.

Living together in San Francisco had been one thing. It had worked well, was simple. Living together in New York was different, because they were now active heroes. They came home, high on adrenaline and the rush of having saved lives, sweating and panting from the exhaustion. And Piper noticed her eyes lingering longer and longer on Reyna, tracing her body, committing it to memory. She found herself overcome by a different kind of rush when looking at her. Attraction. Piper wasn't stupid, she recognized that she was wildly attracted to Reyna.

"Annie, you coming home with us?" Piper asked, after their latest mission.

It had been Piper, Reyna, Annabeth and Thalia out together, fighting a gang of villains that was slowly growing stronger. They'd managed to capture some of them before they could get away this time, and Piper was feeling so energized by that. Annabeth looked at them, shaking her head.

"I'll debrief Rachel and Percy and then I'll be going out for cocktails with Thalia. It's been two weeks since she was last in New York, I gotta catch up with her."

Piper nodded, a jerky motion. She could hear Reyna's labored breath next to her and the sound alone did things to her. So when it was just the two of them returning to their apartment, and the door closed behind them, and Reyna kicked off her boots, Piper acted on impulse. She reached out for Reyna, cupping her face and pinning her against the door, but waiting. Looking at her. And then Reyna's hands were on her hips, pulling her close enough to kiss.

"Took you long enough," Reyna's voice was a rough whisper.

"Oh," Piper huffed. "You know you could have taken the first step too, right?"

Instead of an answer, she got another kiss from the Valkyrie. They were working together so well on the streets, there was something that came natural to fighting together, and Piper couldn't wait to see where else they would be compatible. She could feel Reyna's hands wandering up from her hips, a firm but exploratory grasp that made Piper shudder.

"I wanted to do this for so long," Piper whispered, filled with yearning.

"Glad you finally did it then," Reyna smirked.

"Yeah," Piper leaned in for another kiss. "Yeah, me too."

Author's note: Next chapter is going to be the last one! The story was supposed to be longer, but I feel like I have said everything important that I wanted to say and, to be quite frank, it's not exactly meeting the response I expected and it feels like I'm writing it for two people, which... doesn't add very much to my own motivation and inspiration for it. I'm incredibly busy nowadays so I want to focus on projects I'm really enthusiastic about and this isn't one anymore. There will be one last chapter to wrap things up with Luke and Octavian's wedding, but that'll be it, because I have a multi-chapter Jercico idea in mind that I am very excited for and I'll rather move on to focus on that!
