Chapter may seem a bit off too due to my surgery-I'm cranky and annoyed and my work may reflect that, not my proudest chapter please bear with me.
Small recap (if you didn't read chapter 6):
Persia and Artemis didn't expect their little session to turn into a full-blown sex.
They certainly weren't expecting the mind-numbing pleasure that came with it.
As both of them climaxed, they were hazily aware of the white glow that momentarily encompassed the pair.
—
After they came down from their post-orgasm bliss, Persia curled up against Artemis. "Milady…I dunno if this is a good time to say this, but every time I, uh…see you, there's this weird fluttering in my heart, and um, I…don't know about you…"
Artemis sighed. "Persia, believe me when I say this, but I do too. And…I think we both know what it means."
She felt Persia's warm breath brushing against her bare skin. "Milady…will this ruin the hunt?"
"I don't know, Persia. But I…I'll come clean with the hunt when it's time."
They fell into a comfortable silence for a while, before Persia mumbled, "Arty…I like you. Can I…stay?"
Artemis was stunned by this. She didn't know how to respond. Yes, she knew she liked Persia. Yes, she knew that Aphrodite had warned her about having to come to terms with her feelings. But…now of all times?
She wasn't sure what to do.
She hadn't even had time to think about it yet.
As the fog of lust cleared, she began to regret her prior actions. She had wanted, initially, for Persia to simply touch her and be done with it.
She hadn't expected it to turn into a full blown sex between both of them.
And she certainly didn't expect the pleasure that came from it, but most importantly…she wasn't sure what to make of the intense love and lust she felt rolling off Persia and herself during the session.
She knew she liked Persia. And from what Persia told her, she knew that Persia liked her too.
But..was she ready? Sure, they had sex…kind of, and Persia expressed her own love to her. Still, what would the hunt think? What would her family think? More importantly…what would happen to her identity?
She was the maiden goddess, the goddess of chastity. Having her fall in love…it would be terrible. But still, she knew this love was true, not the monstrosity she had tried with Orion.
"I don't know, Persi." She said, sighing heavily. "I don't know."
No response.
Looking at her unofficial love, she noted that Persia had already snuggled into her side and fallen asleep, her naked form snuggled nicely into her side, her face peaceful and serene.
Artemis' heart ached at the sight. Here was her love, the 'slave' of the hunt, cuddled into her side, already having attempted to establish a relationship with her. And yet she was still scared and unwilling to come to terms with her feelings, in fear of losing her identity.
What was she doing?
"I don't know, Persi. I don't." She said again, sighing. Her heart clenched painfully, but she steeled her mind. For now, their relationship would have to remain in the dark until she could get her nerves under control.
She wasn't sure if this was the right choice.
In this instant, she felt like she was no better than the other gods. Her brother would be laughing at this hypocrisy-there she was, yelling at them for breaking countless maiden's hearts while heading down that path herself.
She shook her head and massaged her temples. Was this love more important than her image? Is breaking Persia's heart to preserve the hunt and her reputation a good choice?
She was truly no better than the other gods.
"I'll make this work, love," Artemis found herself saying as she planted a small kiss on Persia's forehead, "I promise."
With that, she pulled the blankets over Persia's naked form, before snuggling up to her new love and inhaling her intoxicating scent of the hearth mixed with the sea.
Soon, both females were asleep, under the covers of the fur blanket.
—
Persia awoke to a pair of silver eyes staring at her lovingly.
"Arty," she breathed out, her fore pulling the goddess in a hug.
"Persia." Artemis said, planting a small kiss on her forehead, before breaking their embrace. "My love…yesterday night, do you remember what you asked?"
"Yeah…judging by what you called me, I believe your response is yes?"
"Well…yeah, kind of." Artemis' response unnerved her. "I…I don't know what to do, going forward. I'm scared. Love…it's new to me, and…I'm not sure about going public with this. What would the hunters think? How would my family see us…?"
She didn't notice Persia's crestfallen expression, but Persia nodded regardless. "Arty…I understand. I'll…respect your decision, and I'll support you on it."
Artemis smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Persia. But I'm, in the meantime, can you still help the hunt do the chores? That way, I'm, they might see you in a good light and make this…easier."
Persia pouted, but nodded. "Sure, Arty. I'll do it for you."
Artemis felt her heart constricting painfully at the words.
As Persia turned and dressed herself, a lone tear slid down the goddess' cheek.
Not that she noticed it anyway.
—
The days passed with nothing changing.
Persia was slowly getting fed up with life in the hunt. While some members were indeed warming up to her, others were getting suspicious.
Zoë, Thalia, the new hunters and even some older ones like Atlanta were on her side now, and were glad that she was helping them with their chores, sometimes even pitching in to help.
But for Phoebe and her small group…well, they grew more and more suspicious of her. Phoebe, for one, believed that she did something to desecrate her femininity and was relegated to this 'punishment' as a result. Most others in her group believed her. For the remaining few…they just held personal grudges against her.
Her saving grace was her 'mother', Hestia. She occasionally passed missions down to Persia to rescue demigods and bring them to camp half-blood…or some random service tunnel on the other side of the states. This allowed her to escape her duties for a while, and she often found her mind wandering when she wasn't doing her chores.
Meanwhile, Artemis wasn't helping either. She often spoke with Phoebe about why she had a bone to pick with her, but Phoebe would listen to it and promptly discard the information. Artemis asking Persia to sleep in her tent at night wasn't helping as well, especially when she treated Persia in the day coldly.
She wondered if Artemis was just using her as a pleasure doll every night.
She wondered if Artemis even held attraction towards her.
Currently, she was in the midst of washing the clothes from the hunt. Persia had her schedule memorized already, and she didn't need Artemis' written chore list.
At 6 in the morning, she'd wake up and prepare the dining table. At 7, the hunt would gather for breakfast, and she'd summon food for them. Sometimes, Hestia would pop in and help her out. After breakfast, she'd wash the clothes, prepare lunch, sharpen the weapons and then prepare dinner. Occasionally, she also prepared hot springs for the hunters to bathe in since she could summon water (but not control it, which miffed her) and heat it up using her fire powers. It drained her though, so she rarely did it.
"Hey Persia, need any help?" Thalia's voice jolted her back to reality. "Hm? I… Nah, thanks though." She replied, and Thalia gave her a grin. "Sure cuz, don't tire yourself out. By the way, nice iPod."
"Thanks. Artemis gave it to me, said it was a thank you gift from Hephaestus for rescuing his children back then." She replied, and Thalia arched her eyebrows up. "Milady? I thought she had, like, an agenda against you or something. She doesn't seem to be doing anything to help you, and Phoebe and her small gang of idiots are growing more and more restless."
Persia sighed at the news. She knew that Artemis wasn't doing anything since it could lead to a 'premature revealing of their relationship', but what scared her the most was the thought that the hunt, which she had pledged herself to, was going to shun her and make her an unwelcome figure within their group.
And Artemis…
She wasn't sure if the goddess even held any feelings towards her. She'd held admiration for Luke, and he'd turned over to Kronos and died. She had a crush on Silena. She turned out to be a spy and died. And then she was the closest of friends with Annabeth, even having a crush on her at one point.. She was a traitor too. Not to mention the countless kids of the minor gods who she tried to strike up relationships with in the Hermes cabin. Ethan Nakamura turned traitor, and she watched him die in front of his eyes as a final act to right his wrongs.
And she had a family in camp half-blood. Look at where that got her. Suspicion, hostility and eventually, betrayal, all thanks to her closest friend turning traitor.
You're her closest friend! You must've spotted SOMETHING!
You and that filthy traitor are friends, lovers. Don't think we don't notice those glances you shoot at her…
And then came the Kronos' silver scythe charm planted under her pillow. And a crap ton of incriminating evidence that Annabitch had dropped into her cabin while she was asleep…she cursed herself for being a heavy sleeper.
But now, having feelings for Artemis that ran deep…She was scared, so scared. Scared of betrayal, scared of the goddess breaking her loyalty and trust. She didn't want to face the reality that the goddess held no actual attraction towards her when she'd been slowly attracted more and more towards said goddess. She was scared that Artemis saw her only as a plaything and nothing else, discarded at a moment's notice.
Like a toy, a puppet.
"-sia? Persia? Hello?" Thalia's voice brought her back to reality, her snapping fingers drawing her attention. "Huh?" she asked intelligently, and Thalia sighed.
"Persia, you spaced out back there. What happened?"
"N-nothing."
Obviously Thalia didn't buy it, as she narrowed her eyes at the suddenly nervous demigoddess. "Something is bothering you. Cmon Persia, speak up. I'm your cousin-trust me."
"No, it was nothing, just memories."
"I don't think so. Something is in your mind. C'mon, speak up."
"Are you sure…?" She asked, and Thalia nodded in confirmation. "Yes Persia. I'm your cousin after all. Now, are you gonna spill or do I have to make you?"
"I-I'll spill," she sighed in resignation. "But Thalia… Please, don't say this to anyone else."
"My lips are sealed."
"Well…this concerns me and…Artemis."
Thalia's eyes widened. "I knew it! Something was up between you two, I knew it!"
"Shut up!" Persia hissed, looking around as her eyes narrowed. "Do you want to tell every single fucking hunter in the vicinity?"
"I-well, I didn't say what is up. I only said something is up between you two, and from your reaction and how you go to her tent every night…I guess it's something that concerns love?"
"is it that fucking obvious?" She groaned as Thalia chuckled. "Nope, just put two and two together and that was the best conclusion I had, and judging by your reaction…anyway, I'm going off topic. But what does it concern exactly and why now in her millennia of existence…?"
"I don't know too! But…Thals, I'm scared. I don't know if she likes me. She…" Persia took a deep breath before she continued, "She acts all cuddly and loving at night, but she rarely shows affection in the daytime. Sometimes, it's worse, she becomes cold, angry and just gives me the cold shoulder. I'm not sure if what we have is true, or if she's making all of this up and is going to toss me away at a moment's notice…" tears were gathering at the corner of Persia's eyes as she confessed, and Thalia's eyes widened at this.
"So…let me get this straight. Milady loves you, and presumably sleeps with you-" Persia nodded, "But she doesn't show any affection when hunters are around and even goes as far as to give you the cold shoulder." Persia nodded again, and a tear spilled out of the corner of her eye. "Hey, hey, don't cry!" Thalia said, wiping the tear off Persia's cheek. "I'm sure that whatever you have between yourselves is genuine, you know?"
"But if it's real…why am I still the, for better or worse, servant of the hunt? I do all your chores, I summon your food, and all I get is suspicion and cold treatment." Persia said, tears spilling, "and the worst part is the goddess that I like probably doesn't even love me back… Thalia, I don't know what to do anymore. I'm scared, I don't want another betrayal, I don't want my heart broken all over again… "
Thalia sat there, speechless, as she pulled her cousin into a hug. She had no idea that this was going on, but she didn't have anything to say to the demigoddess.
More accurately, she didn't know what to say.
She had hoped for a chance at entering a relationship with her, ah, cousin again. She liked Percy as a guy-she liked her even more as a girl. Knowing that she liked Artemis was a blow, but it wasn't like she didn't know the fates weren't happy with her. After all, she was born, wasn't she?
As she hugged the distraught Persia though, she swore the heard a bush nearby rustle. Turning her head, she saw nothing.
Probably just some random wildlife, she thought.
Both of them missed the pair of obsidian colored eyes staring at them.
—
Zoë Was surprised at the revelation.
Spying on Persia wasn't her brightest idea ever. Spying on Persia who was breaking down was even worse. But hearing her admit to the rumors… It at least proved her suspicion correct.
She was surprised by her admission.
She was angered by her goddess' decision.
And she was sorry for Persia's current predicament.
Her mistress always said that she placed any maiden's well-being first. 'Males Are pigs. They break a maiden's heart and never turn back to face their crimes', she had said.
Yet her mistress was doing the same thing to Persia.
She couldn't deny that her mistress was doing this for the good of both of them. Apollo would probably smite Persia if he knew of their love. Zeus would probably explode and smite Persia or obliterate her soul. The hunt might even try to kill her before the gods did-she could already hear the screams and accusations of 'how dare you seduce our mistress you whore' in her ears.
She really needed to have a chat with her mistresss.
Before she began to move though, Persia's now hoarse voice reached her ears, and Zoë paused to listen once again. "…and she enjoyed it, I think. That's why I'm scared, I don't wanna be regarded as a doll and nothing else, I'm scared of being discarded like a used toy afterwards…"
"Hey, hey, shh, it's all gonna be fine. I know our mistress, she's not gonna do that. If she was ready enough to…do those acts with you, my guess is that she really, really loves you and she won't be giving you up any time anywhere. Cousin, have faith, don't worry about her,"
"B-but, I'm scared Thalia."
"Don't be, cuz. You're a fine, strong woman now. And even if you were a guy, Artemis could still like you. She keeps talking about the 'most respectable man in the world' or something like that. Cuz, you'll be fine."
Persia sniffled and wiped her tears away, eyes red and puffy. Zoë wanted to just burst out of the bush and hug her, tell her everything was alright-
Where did that come from?
Why am I even thinking about that?
Shaking her head violently, she tried to dispel the thoughts from her head.
"-what happened that night?" Thalia asked, attempting to make Persia remember her good memories. "Well…we did touch each other's genitals-" Thalia's eyes practically bugged out of their sockets "-and um, as we…climaxed, there was this funny white glow. Artemis doesn't know what it is either…"
But Zoë didn't hear the rest, as her mind spun.
White glow, climax.
Soulmates.
Before she knew what she was doing, she had burst out of the bush and blurted out, "Thou hast experienced the bonding mark of soulmates!?"
Thalia stared at her in shock, while Persia's eyes grew from shocked and surprised to cold and angry as they flicked back and fourth between Thalia and Zoë..
And then the water whipped up and pushed her off her feet while the ground shook, causing both hunters to stumble.
—
Thalia, for the first time in months, was really, really scared. All because of her cousin's temper tantrum.
"So you think it's funny to eavesdrop!?" Persia yelled at a cowering Zoë-you don't see that everyday-as she advanced towards her, fire bursting from her clenched fist.
"L-look, Persia, it wasn't my intention-"
"BUT IT WAS WHAT YOU WERE DOING!" Persia screamed back as the ground shook more violently. She panicked-she didn't know Zoë was listening in onto their conversation, but she knew one thing for sure-she had to calm Persia down now, or else.
"Kelp head! Calm down!" She yelled, and instantly regretted it as Persia turned and immediately began stalking towards her. "So you think it's all fun and games, calling me nicknames?" Persia snarled, her voice low, cold and calculating.
She found herself backing away from her angry cousin. "No, Persia, calm down! It's not-"
"NOT WHAT YOU MEANT? NOT WHAT IT SEEMS? BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE YOU'VE KNOWN HER PRESENCE THE ENTIRE FUCKING TIME AND DIDN'T SAY A WORD ABOUT IT!" Persia roared, and she shivered. "No, Persia, calm down! I didn't-"
"Didn't your arse! You probably let her in on this plan just to COAX OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR LIKE THE LITTLE TRAITOR YOU ARE!" Her cousin screamed as she shot a ball of flames towards her.
Being the nimble hunter she was, the ball of fire was easily dodged, and the trees behind her exploded in flames. Persia's eyes glowed with rage and fury as she sent another ball of fire towards her, and she narrowly dodged it, the flames licking at her parka and slightly charring it. The clothes lay forgotten on the bank of the lake as Persia unleashed her pent-up anger and fury at Thalia.
Hunters, hearing the commotion, ran into the clearing to see she shocking sight of a raging Persia swinging flaming fists at their lieutenant. Phoebe, always the rash one, pulled out her bow and began firing at the girl, but Persia simply dodged them or incinerated them with her fist.
Luckily, Persia didn't see Zoë coming up from behind her.
Just as she swung another fist at Thalia, Zoë grabbed her by the arms and tackled her to the ground. Thalia watched in sadness as her cousin screamed profanities and thrashed at her bonds to no avail…
Until she kicked Zoë in the shin and head butted her.
Dazed, the millennia old hunter stumbled back and fell down as her vision swirled and distorted. Hunters attempted to rush her, but she screamed in anger and fury as she began her assault.
And then, a cold, commanding voice yelled out, "Stop!"
Immediately, all eyes turned to see the newcomer, wielding a silver bow that had power rolling off it like waves. A silver arrow was notched, the bowstring pulled taunt. The archer's silver orbs shone with a cold glint in them as she stared at Persia.
Thalia sucked in a breath. Oh, no. Lady Artemis…please don't make this any worse.
"Stop attacking my sisters."
Persia's expression was unreadable, before she let out a cold laugh. "Your sisters? Not ours? I guess I really mean nothing to you, don't I?"
She laughed again, her laughter devoid of any Humor, ignoring the flash of pain and regret that flashed in the goddess' eyes.
"Look at you, standing all high and mighty, holding your oh so majestic silver bow and threatening to kill me, when you sent Thalia and Zoë to help coax information out of me. And when things get out of hand, you just resort to killing me." Persia's gaze turned hard and angry. "Your sisters. As if I'm not one. As if that…pledge, meant nothing. As if my fucking words meant nothing to you. Screw you, Artemis. You preach that males are all terrible and none of them are good, and they are all lying, stinking bastards. Well, I'm happy to say that you goddess and half of your sisters gathered here are no better."
Artemis lowered her bow, and the tension in the bowstring slacked. Shame and guilt was evident in her features as she opened her mouth to speak. "Persia-"
"Shut it. I don't want to hear your pathetic excuses, goddess. You're no better than your family, you know that?"
"Persia, please-"
"At least your brother doesn't give them false hope when he does his deeds. At least my ex-father cared. You don't. You can't even face your own feelings now, much less admit them. Just like the coward you are, hiding behind the facade of a powerful, just goddess who helps maidens. Inside, you're just an insecure, arrogant, egotistical deity. I don't even know why I was bonded to you of all peo-all things." Persia spat.
Silence ensued in the clearing, the only sounds being of birds chirping and fire crackling as the trees burned.
Persia turned around and began walking back to the lake, her head down. Thalia swore she saw something shimmering at the corners of her eyes.
"Persia, stop what you are doing this instance." The demigoddess heeded no attention to the goddess, who snarled in frustration. "Persia, STOP!"
"Why do you care?" Persia spoke, her voice low and cold as she turned around to face Artemis. "You obviously don't give a shit about how I feel, you don't even treat me like one of your sisters. Not even as a person. I'm just a slave, a servant, here to serve you and get discarded at a moment's notice, am I not?"
Silence.
"Even now, you're being the coward you are, Lady Artemis, refusing to accept the truth because it'll ruin your oh so perfect image. Am I not right?" A lone tear ran down Artemis' cheek, but Persia simply stared into her unflinching silver orbs before turning around.
"Now leave me alone." Persia finished, walking back towards the bank of the lake. Phoebe and some of the elder hunters smirked and laughed quietly, though their eyes held fear, but Persia paid no attention until Thalia reached out and grabbed her.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Persia snarled at her, and she recoiled slightly but kept her grip on Persia's arm. "Persi, listen-"
"I don't have to listen to you, Lieutenant." She flinched at the cold tone Persia addressed her in, and anger bubbled within her. Just Listen will you! Her brain yelled, but she found herself speaking before she could stop herself.
"Oh, so not even cousin, not even Thalia. Just 'lieutenant'. You're an idiot, you know…that?" She said, faltering as Persia stared at her with a cold and listless gaze.
"So I'm an idiot. Gee, thanks, Lieutenant. Fuck off."
The hunt watched as Persia reached the banks of the lake, spun around and flipped them off with both hands, before back flipping into the lake with hardly a ripple on the surface.
—
Days passed, on the verge turning into weeks. The hunt now rarely saw Persia in their campsite.
The laundry was always done, and the weaponry was always sharpened, but they never saw Persia beyond rare glimpses of her through the armory tent flap or the banks of the lake. Some saw her return to the lake after she completed her duties.
Somehow, food was always present at breakfast, lunchtime and dinner, always at 7am, 12pm and 8pm sharp.
Thalia and Zoë were miserable, while Artemis had rarely even come out of her tent. Phoebe and her group of elder huntresses were also feeling increasingly guilty-who knew how much the girl had suffered before to release that amount of pent-up aggression at them?
Overall, camp morale was low. They hadn't relocated ever since Persia had dove headfirst into the lake, but Artemis refused to break camp, knowing that Persia was right-if she abandoned her here, she would surely be no better than the other gods, leaving their companions to fend for themselves in an unforgiving world.
There were very few monster attacks. Two hellhounds and one cyclops who unfortunately stumbled across their camp were quickly wiped out. Still, the sucessful elimination of monsters did nothing to lift their spirits, and the hunt still trudged and moped around the place.
Waking to another rainy day, the hunt resumed it's normal routine. Surprisingly, the dining table and benches had been removed, and in it's place stood the dining tent that the hunters used if it was rainy outside. On the tables were immaculately prepared plates of food. Fried back on with eggs and toast, as well as sausages. A salad bowl was also available for the two vegetarian hunters in the hunters.
No one spoke as they ate. Using her enchanted hearing, Artemis could faintly hear the spashing of water in the general vicinity of the lake, but she wasn't sure if it was just the rain hitting the lake or Persia doing the laundry. She let her mind wander as she slowly ate her bacon and eggs, wondering if she had forever ruined her relationship between the hunters, Persia and her closest friends.
Persia had refused contact over the weeks. Every time someone approached, her response would be "fuck off". If they persisted, she would groan and say "please fuck off", and if they refused to leave, she'd explode. Well, her fists would quite literally do that, and she'd begin throwing flaming punches until the hunter left.
After Naomi, one of the hunters who'd stood staunchly with Phoebe, tried to apologize and ended up with a massive fist-shaped burn mark on her cheek, as well as a parka charred and covered in soot, no hunter dared to approach her. Many would lament at the slim figure sitting in solitude on the bank of the lake, shoulders droopy, or take glimpses at the sweaty girl hunched over a whetstone in the armory tent.
Artemis felt personally guilty about Persia's predicament. If she'd acted up, if she'd understood that Persia believed that she sent Thalia and Zoë to coax information out of her and immediately dispelled that belief, if she'd only been brave enough to admit her feelings… maybe everything would have changed.
Maybe she wouldn't be experiencing these continues torments of lone, sleepless nights and somber moods without Persia's little quips to light everything up.
Beside her, hunters began to file out of the dining tent to begin their daily duties. Looking down at her plate of food, she realized she'd barely eaten at all, even though it smelled scrumptious and looked appetizing.
She had no desire to eat. Not since Persia left her side nearly a week prior.
She hated herself for not standing up and coming clean when she had the chance to. Now, she had driven away her one and only love in her millennia of existence, and it was all her fault.
She wondered if Persia could even forgive her.
As she stepped out of the dining tent, a slim figure that was almost 5'6 brushed past her and went into the dining tent. Before she could reach out a hand and grab the figure, who she knew was Persia, the flap slammed down and zipped shut. She buried her temples in her hands as she heard the sounds of tableware getting collected and stacked up into a neat pile.
Even now, Persia was actively refusing contact with her.
Just how badly has she messed up?
Moments later, a stone-faced Persia pushed past the tent flap and stepped out, the tableware clean and sparkling in the dim light. "Persia!" Artemis called out, but the girl didn't even respond as she just stomped back towards the lake.
A lone tear slid down the goddess' cheek. She was so close to just screaming in frustration and releasing her divine form-just turn back or acknowledge me, please….
Of course, Persia didn't. Artemis watched, eyes teary as the girl submerged herself back into the lake. The laundry was already done, and it was some time before Persia normally emerged to sharpen the weaponry.
Artemis was ready to cry at this point. She just wanted Persia back. She knew she had done something stupid, she knew Persia was right when she yelled at her. But what could she do…
Hestia!
A moment later, a silver flash illuminated the campsite, and Artemis was no longer seen in the camp.
Hunters strolled about, noting the absence of their mistress. Still, it dodn't affect their day ti day activities…
Until a hunter noticed that Persia was nowhere to be seen too.
"Where's Persia?" Tracy, a new hunter, asked. "Dunno, but she's not in the armory." Another replied, and hunters began spreading out to look for Persia.
A while later, Artemis returned to be notified of the news. She too, helped to try and trace any sort of trail Persia might have created when she disappeared, but so far nothing was found…
That was, until someone deep in the forest screamed in a feminine voice, and Artemis felt distress and panic sent by one of her oldest hunters.
And then the lake exploded.
