A/N So funny story. I'm kind of half assing and forgetting important character development things apparently cause I never actually wrote them down so I made some small updates to the first chapter so it's not ridiculous PLUS bad continuity. If you don't wanna go back and read it again then all you need to know is Sophia is halfway through her schooling to be an archaeologist because of course she is. Naturally my characters are there for me to live vicariously through and I can't afford to go to college right now soooo...That's all I've got. Comtrya!
They were woken up early, super early. So early the sun was barely poking up over the horizon and Sophia needed a solid thirty seconds to figure out where the hell she was. When her stomach grumbled one of the women who'd taken her to a place to sleep the night before passed her a small morsel of food and gestured towards her new friends across the village center.
Of course Indy was already up, talking to the village shaman and Short Round was next to him, rubbing sleepily at his eyes with their bags at his feet.
Indy's eyes lingered on her for a bit longer than necessary when she shuffled up to them, stuffing her hands deep into the pockets of his now very dirty dinner jacket. She hadn't exactly been on the best of terms with him when she walked off last night and he seemed to be trying to gauge whether she was still mad at him or not.
She wasn't. It wasn't him she was frustrated at, it was everything going on and he'd just gotten in the way of that by thinking her time travel story was a farce. Which is kind of was, so fair game.
So, trying not to really interrupt his conversation she gave him a quick, tired sort of smile and nudged him lightheartedly with her elbow which seemed to put him at ease.
A couple of minutes later the shaman walked away and Indy nodded decisively. "They're bringing the elephants and guides to take us to Pankot. We'll leave as soon as they're ready."
By the time the sun was out fully, they were set to leave. Shorty was making friends with his young elephant and she was doing the same with hers. She'd never seen an elephant outside of a zoo and never gotten to be so close to one. Hers seemed to be particularly fond of being scratched under the chin and she happily obliged. When Indy came up to them she was waiting for him to say they were wasting time and just get on the elephant already.
"Listen, about last night-"
Nevermind. He wanted to talk about her wild lie. "Look I didn't think you'd believe me anyway, I was just-"
"Whatever you've been through is your business. I shouldn't have pushed so hard, I just…"
"Thought Lao Che had kidnapped me to sell me on the black market because I was wearing shorts and a tank top and looked like I was drugged?" Contextually she could hardly blame him anymore. It looked super sketchy.
He frowned and nodded. "It makes more sense than time travel, you've gotta admit."
"You're not wrong there." She chuckled, thinking ahead. "Think it over again in a few days. Maybe it'll seem a little less ridiculous." Magic stones might give him a change of heart…or maybe it would be the literal on fire hearts that would actually do it.
"I don't see how that'll change anything, but if it makes you feel better…" He shrugged, then nodded to the elephant between them. "Now get up there, we've got a long trip ahead of us."
The fire crackled low while Shorty slept and Indy lay as usual, with his hat over his face. Even the elephants and their guides seemed to be asleep, but Sophia was still awake. She didn't know how she was managing it, she'd hardly slept the night before and the night before that. Surely exhaustion would catch up with her at some point.
But no, she was still awake with her mind whirling. Tossing led to turning and turning led to worries that she'd wake everyone else up. So as quietly as possible she tiptoed a little bit away, still well within view of the camp but not so close that her movements would disturb anybody.
She thought she'd made a clean getaway before there was a crunch of brush behind her and Indy plopped down next to her right as she took a seat on a rock.
"Should sleep closer for safety's sake?" She said for him, knowing exactly what he was about to mention.
"Wandering through the jungle in the dark isn't exactly smart." He grumbled sleepily.
"Couldn't sleep, didn't wanna wake people up. I wasn't going far." she held up her hand to stop him before he could reprimand her for being stupid. Now that she said it out loud it sounded dumber than she'd thought. "I know, I know. Stupid. I'm not really thinking all that clearly right now. I'm sorry I woke you up."
He took a deep breath and let it out wearily. "You gotta sleep sometime."
"Love to. Got whiskey? I never got the stiff drink I requested on the plane. That was terrible in flight service, let me tell you."
He chucked and sounded a bit surprised. "I wish, darlin, I wish."
Having a heart to heart with him hadn't been in her plans when she'd left the fire. In the dark she hoped he couldn't see the nervous expression on her face.
"Look, the kid'll sleep through a gunfight and I'm not gettin' any rest with you out here. We might as well sit by the fire while we wait to get eaten by the wildlife."
"Point taken."
He followed a step behind her and caught her arm before she could sit back down. "You know, if you get cold again-"
Subtle. "You'll selflessly offer to share body heat?"
"I just want you to be comfortable." He smirked.
Yep. She was still gonna let herself have this one. "Mmhm, sure. But you are more comfortable than a tree stump so okay."
Still smirking he settled in, pulling her down with him by the hand. They shuffled around until they found a comfortable position and his hand drew up and down her arm gently.
Like she had back on the plane, she was able to relax against him and sighed lightly, going limp when his fingers moved from her arm to her back.
"We'll pretend this wasn't your plan since we left this morning." She said sleepily.
"And that you weren't hoping I'd offer." He added.
