Love You Better
The Embassy
Keith hadn't heard from Diana in almost two weeks. Though, it wasn't like she was actually attempting to communicate with him. He shouldn't expect her to after getting caught with Lauren. But Keith wasn't going to let Diana get away so easily. What enticed him the most about her was that she presented a challenge. Any other woman, he would've had in his bed or he in their beds by now. But Diana, it was something about her as if she was hiding something as to why she didn't want to take that step. Keith was going to find out.
Walking to her office, the door was cracked open. He slowly and quietly opened the door wider and not much to his surprise he saw Diana in Clark Kent's arms.
"It's not your fault, Di. You didn't know."
"But I could've done something more. I did know that he was having trouble. That young boy didn't have to have such a tragic fate."
"Sometimes things just aren't in our control. It's okay…it's okay…"
Clark had one arm firmly around her waist and ran his fingers of his other hand through Diana's hair consoling her as she cried. Diana had her face tucked into his neck. Her arms around him holding on tightly to his shirt.
Even if it is just Diana being consoled, it still looked so much more of a man consoling his woman instead of just his friend who happens to be a woman.
Keith cleared his throat loudly.
Clark and Diana looked up.
"Keith?"
"Hey, Diana. Seems like bad timing but we need to talk for a bit."
Diana sniffled and Clark reached over to a table for a box of tissue for her.
She smiled at him. "Thank you."
Clark gently wiped away a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "It's going to be okay."
"What happened?" Keith asked.
"A student of mine was in an accident."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Diana." Keith walked over to her and stepped in front of Clark to hug her. "You could've called me, you know?"
Diana didn't hug him back. She just stood still. Clark frowned sensing Diana's uncomfortableness.
"Excuse me, Madam Prince?" Cathleen, the Embassy secretary called from the door.
Diana took the chance to quickly pull away from Keith.
"Yes, Cathleen?"
Thank you, Cathleen…
"I know this isn't the time, but Ms. Henson is really getting testy. I'm not sure how to answer her."
Diana nodded. "I'll be right there to help in just a second."
"Thank you so much!"
Cathleen walked away by to her office.
"I guess you two could have a chat while I'm gone for a moment."
Diana gave Clark a slight smile before walking out.
"It's interesting that you are always around when Diana seems vulnerable," Keith said.
Clark frowned again. "Diana and I were in the middle of our interview when she got the call. But no matter what it is or when, I'll drop everything and be there for her."
"Look, I understand you two are friends-"
"Best friends," Clark corrected sternly.
"Best friends, sure. But there are boundaries. Diana and I might be hitting a speed bump but that doesn't mean you can try to swindle your way in, getting in my way as I've noticed you've been doing."
"I don't don't have to swindle my way into anything. What Diana and I have between us won't change for someone one like you who thinks you can take advantage of her or get away with things behind her back. You disrespect Diana again, sneaking around with another woman, you'll have to answer to me."
Keith scoffed. "Threatening an officer, Kent. Might want to rethink that. Stay out of our business. Better yet, stay away from Diana. She doesn't need you in her ear. We will work this out."
Diana walked back into her office feeling the awkwardness, heavy tension between them. Clark and Keith scowling at each other.
"Clark, we can get back to our interview. I'm sorry I've taken so much time."
"Hey, no worries, Di." Clark picked up his jacket and laptop bag. "I'm actually going to head out. Jimmy texted me earlier about something."
"But-"
Clark kissed her cheek. "You and Keith need to talk. I'll call you later if I have any more follow up questions."
Diana stared into his eyes for a moment.
Something's wrong…
"Don't forget to call me later," Diana said touching his arm.
"Now how can I forget that?" he smiled.
Diana nodded slightly and watched him as he walked out.
"Yeah, I'm still here, Diana," Keith said sarcastically.
Unfortunately.
Diana sighed and rolled her eyes turning around to him.
"What do you want, Keith?"
"I wanted to make amends. I'm sorry. We haven't had much time together."
"Keith, I'm sorry but as you can see, I'm very busy."
"But you are able to make time for Clark?"
"We were working, Keith."
"That's not what I walked in on."
Diana frowned. "Are you serious?! A student of mine has passed away and I have to not only speak with his parents but his fellow classmates. You are worried about the wrong thing, Keith!"
"Why don't you talk to me instead of going to him? I don't get it."
Because he understands me.
"Clark has been the one I go to for anything."
"That needs to change if we are going to make this work."
"Excuse me?! Who are you tell me what to do?!"
"What I mean is that, we both are guilty of leaning on other people when things seem a little out of touch between us. We keep starting and stopping. I don't want that anymore. I want a good start and to keep going with you."
Typical…he just wants to bed me.
"You should leave, Keith. I'm not sure what you think would've been accomplished coming in here being rude and making demands. I don't have time for all of that."
"Diana, I'm not sure how to approach this."
"Then don't at all."
Keith sighed. "There's a dinner party this coming Saturday for Sergeant Bradley's 85th birthday. I want you to come with me. Everyone I know will be there. Having you with me shows how important you are to me."
"I'm not a showcase."
"It's not like that, Diana. Just think about it, please."
Diana raised her brow then sighed. "I need time."
"Well I'm hoping not too much." Keith walked toward the door. "Just let me know by Friday."
"Why? Because you already have other options if I don't agree?"
"No, because I'll just tell the host not to reserve another seat at the table."
Keith walked out of her office.
Diana sighed thinking back on how Clark left. He seemed very uneasy.
"I should call him," Diana said out loud.
"Call who?"
"Mera?! What are you doing here?"
Mera of Xebel, Queen of Atlantis and Arthur Curry, Aquaman's beloved wife.
She smiled walking in. "Well Arthur is on a mission. I needed to get away for a while. Thought that we could catch up. I hope it's not a bad time."
"No, not at all. Actually I really need your help, advice."
"Oh? About you and Clark?"
"That's half."
Mera frowned. "The other half is that dreadful annoying Keith guy, isn't it?"
Diana rolled her eyes and sighed dramatically. "They were both just here. Mera, what do I do?!"
"Oh wow…really?! Wait you can tell me all of that in a minute. First, what do you mean, what do you do?! It's simple. Tell that guy you never want to speak to him again, lose your number, and then you go hop into the nearest bed with Clark or well you two don't need a bed when you can fly," Mera smirked.
"Mera!"
"What?! I'm speaking the truth, Diana. You know you want to! You two are just so cute together! Love birds in every sense of the definition."
"Kal and I are just friends."
"Really? Because a few weeks ago, Clark had his hands all over you while you were giving him bedroom eyes."
Diana blushed. "That's not what was happening."
"Diana, you are the world's worst liar."
"Mera, Kal and I decided years ago we wouldn't become romantically involved."
"Why is that? Rejecting what the heart really wants? Obviously, that whole agreement has been thrown out the window."
"We have a responsibility. The world has been put on our shoulders."
"So what? The world has nothing to do with you two being together."
"Yes it does. We are in the public eye as not only Superman, Wonder Woman but also Clark Kent, Diana Prince."
"I still don't see the problem and why it matters. Whether you're Superman, Wonder Woman or Clark Kent, Diana Prince, you two work together to protect this world. You're a partnership through and through. It's only natural to give into your obvious romantic feelings."
Diana shook her head. "We can't."
"Are you in love with Keith?" Mera raised her brow.
"Oh, Gods, no!"
"So why are you still dating him?"
"We aren't exactly dating. More often than not I'm late meeting him or have to cancel altogether. I've caught him a couple of times flirting with other women and even just about 2 weeks ago, he was with a co-worker having drinks with her. When he walked her to her car, he came back with lipstick on his sleeve."
"Diana, why are you wasting your time?!"
"I'm not! He just came to my office today. Walked in on Clark and I…"
"What were you and Clark doing?! He had you on the desk?!"
"No. He was consoling me. A student of mine passed away."
"Oh no, I'm sorry, Diana."
"Mera, I have so much on my mind. So much work I have to do. Dating just isn't for me right now."
"Dating that guy isn't for you. But having some time with Clark is what you really need and want."
"I would rather Clark and I have alone time."
"So just do so!"
"It's not that simple, Mera."
"It's just that Amazonian stubbornness talking. You love that man. He loves you. Everyone knows this. It's only a matter of time you two stop beating around the bush and get serious."
Maybe she's right. No it's not a maybe…she is right. But I'm not even sure how to go about this. I don't want anything to change and lead to something unbecoming between us.
Hours later…Downtown Metropolis
"Come on, Superman! Let's play, play, play!" Toyman laughed as he pressed a button his controller for his giant robot to swat Superman like a fly to the ground.
"Dammit! Come on! Focus!" he said to himself trying to get up.
But he couldn't move. All of his focus was on what Keith said. He wanted Diana to be happy. But was he getting in the way of that?
"Kal?" Wonder Woman called as she stood above him with her hand out for him to take.
"Hey…I-"
"You blanked out in a middle of a fight. I taught you better than that."
He smiled and took her hand.
"I'm sorry. I just have a lot on my mind."
"I know it's something that we need to talk about."
"No, we don't have to."
"Yes, we do. How things were left at my office I didn't like at all."
"Are you just going to forget about me?! You aren't playing fair, Superman! I would love to create a Wonder doll with you, Wonder Woman!" Toyman yelled.
"We can get this over with now," Wonder Woman smirked.
Superman watched as Wonder Woman flew off.
"I'm…right behind you."
Just as always, it's like a dance for us. Naturally in sync.
"Game over, Toyman."
"No! No! No! You cheated! That wasn't the game!"
As Toyman was hauled off by A.R.G.U.S., Superman and Wonder Woman were helping clean up debris from sides of building that were hit.
"Sorry, about your car, Sir," Superman apologized nervously rubbing the back of his head. "The Justice League will take care of it."
"It's no problem at all, Superman. My life is worth so much more than this. I can always get a new one. Grateful to have insurance and I've taken the bus or train a few times anyway," the man laughed.
Superman slightly nodded with a smile.
The man waved getting on a bus.
Superman then felt Wonder Woman's hand on his bicep. She stood closely behind with her chest against his back. She then trailed her hand down his arm and took his hand intertwining their fingers.
Superman smiled. "What's going on, Di?"
"There's some children who want to meet and take photos with Superman."
He turned to her. "This is what I love the most about our job."
"Yes! Of course! The children are so adorable!"
Wonder Woman happily pulled him with her to a local ice cream parlor across the street.
"And here is the man himself!" Wonder Woman announced as they walked in.
"Superman!" The kids cheered and hurried to surround him.
"Who wants ice cream?!" Superman asked enthusiastically.
"MMMEEEEE!!!!"
"Superman?" Wonder Woman questioned.
"I'll get you some too don't worry," he winked.
Bystanders who realized Superman and Wonder Woman were there started to pile in wanting free ice cream, and an unexpected meet and greet with Superman and Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman looked at Superman with a proud smile.
The way he is with everyone. So kind and gentle. The children…everyone here loves him. That of course includes me.
"Are you boyfriend and girlfriend?" One of the kids asked.
"No, silly," another kid nudged the other. "They are married, duh!"
Superman and Wonder Woman's hearts dropped and they glanced at each other.
Superman then, to everyone's surprise, especially Wonder Woman's leaned over and kissed her cheek.
He didn't deny…but he didn't confirm anything either. Well maybe the kiss on the cheek is his way of confirming something? But that's not like Kal. He knows for himself any personal dealings are kept to ourselves even with it being innocent.
"It was great meeting you all. Wonder Woman and I have work to get back to."
"Ahh!!" the kids whined.
"Don't worry. We'll come back again and next time we'll bring our other friends! Promise!"
"YAY!!"
Later that evening….
Clark and Diana flew to London and sat on top of the 22 Bishopsgate to watch the sunset.
As Clark wrapped his arm around her waist, Diana laid her head on his shoulder.
"It feels good to have moments like this," Diana's sighed lovingly.
"Yeah! Especially having them with you."
Diana looked up at him with a raised brow. "Don't try to sweet talk me when we have something serious to talk about."
He chuckled. "What do you mean? I'm being honest."
"Is that so? Then tell me what you and Keith talked about earlier. The awkward, uncomfortable tension was so thick I could've used my sword to cut through."
Clark sighed. "He questioned us being friends."
"What do you mean? How dare he! He had the nerve to ask me to go to a birthday celebration and I-"
"Go, Diana."
"What?!"
"Go and enjoy yourself."
"Kal, you can't be serious…?"
What's wrong with him? His eyes, so suddenly full of sadness. Is he trying to push me away? But just moments ago with the children?
"Diana, I want you to be happy. Keith said that I'm in the way. That I'm purposely getting in the way. That's not how it is. I just want to still protect you. But I can't get in the way of your happiness."
"Kal, a very large part of my happiness is having you with me."
"And I will be with you, Di. Always will. But I can't be in your way of having someone…romantically. Go to the party. Have a good time. Maybe that's what you and Keith need."
Diana shook her head. "I'm not going."
"Diana…" Clark leaned over and kissed her forehead. "You don't know how beautiful you are when you pout. But I'm serious."
"I'm serious, too."
"I already warned Keith that if he dares hurt you, I'm kicking his ass. Just go, Di. Give him a fair shot."
"Even after him flirting with other women?"
"When he isn't getting what he really wants, which is you, he was looking for it somewhere else. Obviously, no one even come close to comparing to you."
Why is he doing this? Does he now not love me like I thought he did?
"That makes no sense to me."
"What guys do sometimes doesn't at all make sense, Di."
Like you are doing now.
"If he screws up, it's on him. But you giving him a genuine chance ensures you tried and can move on to what you truly want."
And what I truly want is you.
Diana frowned and turned her head away from him.
"Don't do that. Come here." Clark pulled Diana closer and wrapped his other arm around her.
Diana still didn't look at him having her head still turned.
"Diana? Diana, come on, look at me." Clark pulled her more even slightly lifting her to sit on his lap. He then snuggled his face into her hair. "I don't want you mad at me, Muffin."
"Muffin?!" Diana turned her head to look at him but didn't realize how close their faces would be.
Clark chuckled and kissed her nose. "My muffin. Warm, soft, and sweet." Clark kissed her forehead.
Diana's heart started racing as she stared into his eyes.
Damn this man. Why won't he just take me? Is it because of the boundaries we prematurely placed? He knows we are far passed that with how our relationship has evolved. I have opened myself to him and himself to me.
"Kal, I want you to know that you are the only man I trust. You mean so much to me. Aways will…no matter what."
Clark smiled. "I know." He kissed her forehead again "Let's get you home, Di. I know you're tired."
Diana nodded, flying up from his lap and held out her hand for him to take. Clark smiled gladly taking her hand flying up with her.
Their flight was comforting as always. Silent. But the obvious sexual tension between them spoke high volumes.
Diana's Condominium
Landing on her balcony, Diana turned to Clark and kissed his cheek, lingering close to the corner of his mouth.
"Good night, Kal."
Clark smirked. "Good night, Diana."
Diana bit her lip before turning away from him. As she was about to walk to the door, Clark took her hand and pulled her back to him in an embrace. Diana immediately embrace him back, wrapping her arms around his neck as tight as she could.
2 days later…Titans Tower
"That must be Garfield and Vic with the music so loud," Diana said as she and Clark flew closer.
"Sounds about right to have a party mid day with a bunch of unsupervised super-powered teens."
Diana giggled. "Donna, Koriand'r, and Richard knows when things need to settle down. But it's Donna's birthday after all, so she can have as much fun as her heart desires! She deserves it!"
"Welcome, Supes and Wondy!" Garfield, Beast Boy, greeted.
"Hello, Garfield. How are you?" Diana smiled.
Garfield blushed turning into a cute puppy and jumped into Diana's arms.
Clark chuckled. "You're a funny kid."
"Beast Boy, cut it out!" Superboy, Conner, scolded.
He quickly jumped down and whimpered sadly.
"No worries, Conner," Diana assured.
Garfield changed back to normal and stuck his tongue out folding his arms making Diana giggle.
Clark patted Conner on his shoulder and shook his hand.
"Doing good?" he asked.
"Yeah, course! Can you stay a bit to see my new training simulation?"
"Of course!"
"Donna's in her room with Cassie and Kori."
Diana and Clark followed Conner up to the rooms. Walking towards Donna's door, it slid open with Cassie walking out.
"Diana!" Cassie squealed flying to her.
"Hey, Cassie!"
"I missed you, Auntie!"
"I missed you, too."
"Kal-El, Princess Diana, good to see you both!" Kori bowed slightly to Diana.
"Hey, Kori!"
"Good to see you as well, Princess Koriand'r!" Diana bowed.
"Diana! Clark!" Donna hugged them both.
"Happy Birthday!" Clark and Diana said in unison.
"Thank you!"
"Here you go, Don. I think you will need this now," Clark smiled handing her a medium sized box.
"Oh?! I know coming from you it's going to be awesome!" Donna immediately ripped the wrapping paper and opened the box. "OH, MY GODS!" Tears welled up in her eyes as she carefully picked up her new digital camera.
"Specially customized just for you. An original. Unlimited memory storage, high image/video quality, holographic display, water proof, unbreakable and a lot of other things Jimmy schooled me on that I was able to enhance with kryptonian tech while putting it together."
Donna squealed jumping up and down and hugged Clark.
"Oh, thank you! You are the best big brother ever!"
Clark was surprised yet moved with her calling him big brother and hugged her back.
"You deserve it, Don."
He looked up at Diana with his eyes and winked.
Gods, this man is something else.
An hour later, the rest of the Justice League arrived for the main party.
"So Diana, you and Clark came here together?" Donna asked.
"Yes, we did. We were at the Fortress."
"Oh?" Donna smirked and giggled.
"No, no, nothing like that. Kal was showing me your gift."
"I'm sure he had a gift for you. A party for two."
Diana gasped. "Donna!"
"What?! Diana, come on! I know you are trying to give this other guy a chance. That's something I still don't understand why when Clark is right here."
"I already told you, Kal advised to me to give him another chance."
"And that's something else I don't understand."
"I don't understand either."
Diana looked to Clark who smirked at her while throwing the football so hard Conner had to fly across the lake.
"I got it!" Conner laughed as everyone cheered him on.
When everyone was now occupied eating cake, dancing, talking amongst themselves, or playing video games, Clark and Diana stayed outside alone.
Clark took her hand and they flew up to stand on top of the roof.
"I love when we can see such beautiful views as this," Diana beamed.
Clark looked at her with a smile then stepped behind her wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Kal?"
He does this knowing how I feel.
Diana exhaled and relaxed in his arms leaning her head back against his shoulder.
"Thank you for all that you've done for Donna, Kal. Coming with me and her to speak with Mrs. Sandoval, then making her day today. That's all she wanted was a new camera. What's even more so special is that you went out of your way to craft it just for her."
"She's deserved it. I like seeing her happy and it makes you happy, too. What makes you happy, makes me happy."
"Then I would be even happier if you didn't insist on me going to that party with Keith."
Clark chuckled nuzzling her hair.
"It's not funny, Kal. Tell me why you want me to go. It's much more than just giving him a chance."
"I want you to have closure. He wanted me out of the way and I am. So is he going to step up and truly be the man you deserve or screw up yet again? This time, he can't blame me for his own screw ups."
Diana turned in his arms staring deeply into his eyes.
"When he inevitably screws up, what happens after?"
"You'll have closure and I'll step right back in to make sure he understands it's over. I'm still not trying to be in the way bu-"
"You are never in the way of anything, Kal."
"I'm just trying to protect the woman I deeply care for. My best friend. My muffin." Clark smiled and cupped her cheek. "I will never apologize for that. I will never stop or hold back protecting you and sure as hell not what I feel for you."
Gods, this man makes me feel such unspeakable things.
"Come on, let's go enjoy the rest of the party. I know how much you love Karaoke," he smiled kissing her forehead. "And hearing you sing is like a heavenly chorus."
Diana smiled back blushing and latched onto his arm.
"Kal, you say such things that…"
"That what?"
Diana reached up and kissed his cheek. "Thank you."
3 days later, Saturday night - Walter E Washington Convention Center
I don't want to be here. I shouldn't be here.
Diana walked into the room and as always, all eyes were immediately on her. She radiated such exotic beauty. She wore a gold cold shoulder, deep v-cut, bubble sleeve satin gown with 2 front splits.
"Ms.?"
Diana turned to see an older man smiling at her.
"Yes?"
He was taken aback by Diana's exotic voice. He smiled wider. "You look quite familiar. You've been on television, right? Are you waiting for someone?"
"Yes, I have and I'm waiting for Keith Griggs."
"Griggs?" He questioned. He then chuckled a bit and shook his head. "Ladies man Griggs. Sure does know how to pick'em."
These men always think they are in control because of their ranks. Absolute disgrace and so disrespectful.
Diana raised her brow. "What?"
"Diana!" Keith called waving as he walked up. "I'm glad you could make it and on time," he said kissing her cheek.
Diana slightly glared.
Condescending ass...
"Anyway… I'd like you to introduce you to a long time buddy, Gerald Sterling."
"Yeah, me and Diana was getting acquainted." Gerald shook his head and smirked. "Come on, Griggs, leave a few for the rest of us."
Keith glanced at Diana and laughed. "What can I say? Griggs charm is one of a kind and helps a lot with the shiny badges."
Diana frowned.
Not even 10 minutes and already strike 2.
Keith took Diana's hand.
"There's more of my colleagues I want you to meet."
Gods, I regret this.
For over an hour, Diana had to sit through long drawn out conversations she was not at all interested in, corny jokes, stares, mumbles and whispered from snooty wives, girlfriends…possibly mistresses.
"And who is this lovely young lady, Keith?" One of the older wives asked.
"Camille, this is Diana Prince. She used to be a secretary at the Air Force. Diana, this Camille Leonard, Major David Leornard's wife and one of the most highly regarded trustees of the district board."
"Oh," Camille giggled. "So Keith, you said she used to…so you've decided to settle down?"
Why is she asking him about me instead of asking me directly. I can speak for myself. Is this really how it is? These women let the men speak for them while they just smile and be latched on their arms being showcased. I'm not that and never will be.
"Settling down? Ha!" Keith shook his head. "I'm sorry, Camille, no wedding bells for me."
Not surprising.
"Ah, I see. You are still chasing the other belles," Camille smirked and laughed.
So she's entertaining this? How rude to speak this way right in front of me.
"I believe I am well capable of speaking for myself, Keith. Mrs. Leonard, I worked as a secretary for Colonel Steve Trevor and Officer Etta Candy as well as assistant professor for Julia Kapetalis. Once graduating college, I became a United Nations' Ambassador and professor at Boston University."
Camille was taken aback. "Well…that's quite a surprise. Good for you, Ms. Prince. Where are you from?"
"A lovely island in the Mediterranean."
"Oh…It's wonderful to see others around the world making a way, especially a woman such as yourself."
Diana frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, I honestly expected you to be an inspiring model or a kept woman as a homemaker."
Diana took an inward breath trying to remain calm. She smiled.
"I cherish my independence and my work. I don't need to be kept by any man." Diana glanced at Keith. "Excuse me."
Diana began walking away.
Keith smiled nervously and cleared his throat. "I be right back."
Keith quickly caught up with Diana grabbing her arm.
"I've told you already not to try to manhandle me."
Keith quickly let go. "Come on, Diana. Don't embarrass me."
"Embarrass you?!" Her voice elevated a bit.
"Calm down, okay?"
"Who are you to tell me to calm down?"
"Diana, you have to understand, some things said are just what it is."
"So you know what she said was wrong."
"I mean, yeah, sure. But she was being honest with her observation of you before knowing you. You do look like a model. There's nothing wrong with that."
"It's not flattering at all especially knowing it's a way to belittle my intelligence and worse being said in a very condensing way."
"Look, just come on, let it go. I have a speech to say and I want you to hear it."
Diana sighed deeply and rolled her eyes.
"Fine."
Keith smiled and tried to take Diana's hand but she moved passed him going back to their table.
Another hour and a half passed with Keith tossing back more than ten glasses of champagne by now. Diana was getting more and more annoyed with listening to all these obnoxious people practically incriminating themselves for shady misdeeds they've done and think they've gotten away with.
It was finally Keith's turn to speak up at the podium.
"Good Evening, everyone! What a very special night! I'm feeling every bit of it with all the champagne I've indulged in."
The crowd laughed a bit while Diana rolled her eyes.
"But it's all worth it! it's a grand celebration! Sergeant Bradley, it is an honor, Sir, to have had you as my mentor and father figure. You are a true hero. I've watched as you fought hard through every obstacle. You deserve the praise and applause. Now, at first I wasn't going to say this but it's the truth. The many men and woman like Sergeant Bradley who made sacrifices deserves far more recognition than the Justice League."
Diana frowned. She was taken aback by the applause he received from that last statement.
"I know they can handle the intergalactic threats but we've all had the thought of maybe we are dealing with such ordeals, it's because of them. They are like magnets to destruction. We need all to understand and recognize who the true heroes are. The ones that don't rely on supernatural special powers. Who would they be if they didn't have those powers? Looking to us to protect them, am I right?!"
Diana was stunned with the loud cheering of agreement from almost everyone in the room.
"One day, there will be a time when they are knocked off their high horses, no more worship. The real heroes will get their due. As for now, we continue to do our best showing our appreciation! Happy Birthday, Sergeant Bradley!"
Keith proudly saluted him before walking off the stage. The roar of loud applauding still surprised Diana.
This is truly how they all feel? No matter what we do, we are still ostracized for who we are.
"You didn't like my speech, Diana? Don't you agree?" Keith asked as he was sitting down.
"No, I don't."
"What? Why not? You know how it is given how close you are to Steve and Etta."
"That's why I'm saying I don't agree. Steve and Etta wouldn't agree either. I've also had my own experience with the Justice League."
Keith scoffed. "It's Superman isn't it? If it wasn't that his planet blew up he needs to-"
"Don't you say another word. How dare you be so disrespectful!"
Calm down. Don't overreact.
"Woah…? Seriously? I didn't know you were that much part of the Superman fan club, Diana. Well what about Wonder Woman? I know you have to agree how a woman who is suppose to be an inspiration and role model for younger girls walks around in a bathing suit with the shortest skirt possible, stripper looking boots, with that rope and sword."
EXCUSE ME!
"I don't know. It's something about her wanting attention. Having men at her feet just because she is a Goddess."
Keep calm...keep calm...
"How do you know if she even likes the attention? And how dare you criticize what she wears?!"
"What woman wouldn't? What she wears is impractical and begging for the attention. Another thing is that a woman shouldn't have that kind of weird power," he said nonchalantly.
So that's how he truly feels? He wants to be in control. But he is nothing more than an insecure little man. I knew it was something I couldn't trust about him.
Diana still sat there watching as some of the guest began to dance with their partners and more mingling.
Keith got another glass of champagne.
"I think you've had enough."
"Maybe…maybe not. It's a good night, Diana. Relax. You haven't had but what? One glass?"
"I'm going to go."
As Diana stood up, Keith grabbed her hand.
"Wait a minute. Why?"
"I'm ready to go home. I'm tired."
Diana yanked her hand away. Keith glared and tossed back one more glass before he went after Diana.
He grabbed her arm.
"Keith, it would be very wise of you to let me go."
"Or what? You know I've been trying to be understanding. But then I see you with Clark all over you. Why is that?"
"I'm warning you. Let me go."
"Answer me!" He suddenly snapped. "That nobody reporter over a well respected Major?"
"Clark is a much better man than you think you are that's for damn sure."
He's drunk. He is not in his right mind but I once heard that people who have drank enough show their truths. This still gives him no right to think he can manhandle me!
Diana didn't want to make a scene but if she must she sure as hell will.
"I could easily have any other woman in this room but I'm giving my time to you. Make it worth it!"
Keith ripped her dress sleeve and part of the front almost exposing her breasts. Diana gasped and as he was trying to kiss her, she slapped him with enough strength to make him stumble back falling on a table and breaking it.
"You pompous pig!" she yelled out.
Everyone gasped turning to see what the commotion was.
Keith was quickly helped up.
Diana glanced around to see everyone staring at her, whispering and mumbling amongst themselves. They were all more concerned about their colleague. Of course. Anything that happens, they keep it to themselves and turn a blind eye.
"I've had enough of this! All of you should be ashamed! You hold yourselves up as highly respected, patting yourselves on the back but have no respect for others you deem below you. I've heard all of you make remarks of the less fortunate yet you go about boasting to the outside how you've helped. If you truly did, women and children will not still be suffering. You all celebrate fighting and wining wars but what about the many innocent bystanders who have lost their lives. You invade others' homes and believe that is right! You are all wrong! As a United Nations Ambassador, I will be addressing this further!"
Diana stormed out of the room.
"You have to get a handle that, Griggs," Sterling whispered patting his shoulder.
"Yeah…yeah…I know."
Diana flew off quickly back home to London.
I knew it. I should've trusted my instincts. I have to tel-…No, not now. I can't have him doing something he might regret later. I just need to get home.
Arriving home, Diana quickly but carefully took off her dress not wanting to rip it more.
I liked this dress.
She sighed as she stepped into the steaming hot shower. She just stood under the water letting her body relax and cleared her mind.
She had to go about this in a calmer manner. Once she figured out her first step, she would tell Kal everything and have a League meeting as well.
Early the next morning…Metropolis: Clark Kent's Apartment
BUZZZ…..BUZZZ….
Clark immediately answered.
"Hey, Good Morning, Muffin."
"Good Morning, Kal."
He frowned. "What's wrong?"
I can't keep anything from him for long, he just knows from the sound of my voice no matter his much I try to sound as my usual self.
"Diana?"
"Oh…I-"
"How was the party?"
"I was very uncomfortable."
"What happened?"
"Could we meet at the Fortress for a bit of training? If you aren't occupied and busy with any-"
"Diana, you know I'll drop any and everything for you."
"But, Kal, if it's important I-"
"Di, nothing is more important than you. I didn't have anything planned. I was actually hoping to catch up with you today if you weren't busy."
"We are in sync in ways like no other."
"We sure are. Meet you in an hour?"
"Yes. Perfect."
"Great! Krypto will definitely be excited to see you but not more than me."
Diana laughed softly. "I'll see you both soon."
Hanging up the phone, Diana sighed.
I still can't tell him too much just yet. I still can't believe what occurred actually happened.
Fortress of Solitude
"Alright, boy, I need you to behave. No playing as if you hurt your paw to get Diana's attention or to be petted."
"WOOF!"
"No, Diana and I seriously need some time together. I need her to tell me what happened at that party. I know something is wrong."
"WOOF! WOOF!" Krypto then dashed off to the front foyer of the Fortress.
Kal chuckled and shook his head. "In one big wolf ear and out the other."
Diana flew in immediately greeted by Krypto.
"Krypto! My big fluffy fur boy!"
"WOOF! WOOF!" Krypto barked happily flying around Diana.
"I got something for you, Krypto, courtesy of the best meat market in London." Diana proudly held up a large box.
"WOOF! WOOF!"
Diana set the box down and kneeled to open it. It was a box fool of different steaks and sausages.
"Now don't go eating all of this in one day. This should last at least 3 days."
Krypto whimpered.
Diana arched her brow. "Krypto."
"WOOF!"
Diana smiled. "Good, boy!"
"Diana, you're spoiling him."
"I can spoil my favorite ball of fluff if I want to, Kal," she pretended to pout standing up and crossed her arms.
Kal chuckled and flew closer to her. "So what about me?"
"Don't tell me you are jealous."
"Jealous of Krypto? A dog? No. No. Ha! No. I don't have to compete with my own dog for my wo-…for your attention."
Krypto went behind Diana and nudged her to move closer to Kal.
Kal smirked and wrapped her arms around her waist pulling her into an embrace.
Diana giggled. "I think Krypto agrees with that." She bit her lip and wrapped her arms around Kal embracing him.
Kal held her as tight as he could and rubbed up and down her back soothingly. Diana sighed in relief and relaxed.
Gods, being in his arms takes me away from everything.
"Let's get started so you can tell me what happened, okay?" He whispered to her.
Diana buried her face into his chest for a moment then nodded slowly.
I wish we could stay just like this.
Just a few more minutes passed, and they finally let go of each other.
Diana blushed and floated backwards.
"So how many times do I have to pin you down this time in order for you to make me dinner?"
Kal smirked. "Well I thought I was doing the pinning, Di? But we can take turns and I'll still make you dinner. You know I'll make you dinner anytime you want. I can actually do anything to you….for you anytime. Just let me know."
"Oh…" Diana felt her heart flutter staring at him with his sly smirk.
"You know we don't have to be outside the fortress either."
"Well, I don't want to break anything, Kal."
"Diana, us breaking things could be fun. It's not like I can't fix whatever it is. I can be very handy."
"I'm sure you are, Farm boy."
"And if you get cold, I'll keep you warm," he winked.
If it was any ounce of doubt, there isn't anymore. This man knows damn well what he is doing to me.
Moments later….
This felt different. The way he was handling me now. Seems so…careful in a way.
Clark was giving Diana this... look again. This gaze that just... consumed her heart and mind. And it wasn't like Diana didn't know what it meant. Because she was pretty sure she returned it just as fiercely.
He couldn't help himself. He growled, fingers twitching against the skin of her arms.
"Got you now," he growled out.
"Yeah?" she huffed back, her voice all hot and ragged. "But really, I got you, Kal-El."
He didn't get to retaliate. Her hands slipped out of his grasp and reached for his neck. She bent him at an awkward angle, snaking her way out of his grip and flipped him into his stomach, arm pinned roughly into his back.
"Got you." Diana was so close to his ear that he could feel her lips brush his skin.
"Yeah, you do…" Kal forced a growl down that threatened to escape him. "You will always have me, Di."
He slipped out of her grip. It happened too easily. Just like he had let go of her too easily before. He didn't even try to get out from under her, just rolled, sat up and pinned her down.
This wasn't sparring anymore.
Diana's face was so close to his, no less flushed than his own and her gaze no less intense than his.
"I think I would like that very delicious gnocchi dish," she began to whisper.
"Oh, yeah? I thought you would've wanted coconut lime chicken?"
"That sounds lovely, too. You've spoiled with so many different dishes, though. But that particular one I'm craving is because…well…"
"Well what?"
"That was the day of the severe thunderstorm in Metropolis. We made sure everyone was safe and had shelter. We were soaking wet and I didn't have a change of clothes so I wore one of your shirts. You cooked for me. Then, being so tired, we fell asleep together…in your bed."
Kal smirked. It was showing in his eyes. It showed in hers. The heat. The force of it.
"So what you are saying is, you want to end up in my bed tonight," he rumbled down at her, "I can definitely make that happen."
Diana laughed and flipped them over so she could be on top. Kal on his back with Diana's legs bracing on either side of his torso.
"You were letting me win though, Kal."
"I wasn't. But I won't deny how much I enjoy when we end up like this. The view I have." Kal placed one hand on her thigh, slowly rubbing up and down and the other behind his head. "You know we still haven't talked about what happened at the party."
Diana sighed.
"Di…?"
"When I walked in…I was already getting stares. One of Keith's friends came up to me trying to flirt."
"You wore the gold dress, right?"
"Yes, why?"
"Well first…the stares are because you were the most beautiful woman in that room. Can't help but to stare and guaranteed some of the wives were jealous. Second, damn I wish I could've seen you in it."
"Kal…" Diana blushed
"What?" he smiled. "I mean I enjoy seeing you in anything or less…or nothing at all."
"Kal!"
He laughed. "I'm just trying to lighten the mood. But seriously, though, I'm already not liking what more you have to say about what happened."
That is why I can't tell you everything just yet.
"Keith was trying to show off. Wanted me as a showcase which I specifically told him I was not and wouldn't be. Everyone he introduced me too perceived me as some empty headed model. When I made aware of my occupations as Ambassador and Professor, it was like it was unbelievable. This one woman still tried to talk down at me. Boasting about herself and her work with charities. However…those charities are cover ups for money laundering."
"What!?" Kal questioned sitting up quickly. He wrapped his arms around Diana's waist wanting her to stay in the position of sitting on him.
"They aren't the Justice League's biggest fans either. Especially Keith. He had some very choice words." Diana looked down. "That's why my instincts told me not to tell him the truth of me being Wonder Woman."
Kal cupped her cheek. "Di, look at me."
She looked up into his eyes. "Diana Prince is perceived as a model that's only good enough to be a showcase on a man's arm. Wonder Woman is perceived as just a Warrior Goddess that wants everyone to bow at her feet."
"You know none of that is true. I've told you, you are a true wonder in every sense of the word. Incredibly talented, intelligent, damn gorgeous, strong, an inspiration and so much more. My muffin, my nightingale…don't ever let anyone tell you or make you think otherwise."
Diana placed one hand in the middle of his chest and the other at the nape of his neck, running her fingers through his curls.
"Thank you, Kal." She leaned in and kissed his cheek.
"Is that all that happened?" he asked still concerned.
Diana sighed deeply. "Before I left, out of anger, I let them all be aware that their misdeeds will be addressed publicly."
"That's my muffin!" he urged, that cocky smirk, that hot smirk dancing on his lips and shining in his eyes. "I think we have had enough training. Let's go back in and I'll make you some hot chocolate. I also brought back some new plants from my last outworld missions I haven't shown you yet."
"Oh, wonderful!"
Lies of omission are still lies. I would never intentionally lie to Kal. But it's not time to tell him yet. I can't have him overreact.
3 days later… Fairlawn, Ohio: Signet Jewelers
"Slither your ass on, Copperhead! We have to go!" Giganta yelled.
"I'm trying to get one more-"
"I believe that is enough. Or it will take much longer for to put everything back in place."
"Damn!" Copperhead looked up seeing Wonder Woman.
"Seems it's a Secret Society free for all tonight," Black Canary said cracking her knuckles.
"Dibs on the never ending legs!" Green Lantern winked at Giganta.
"Gross, man! You don't flirt with the enemy!" Shazam said.
"Kid, you got a lot to learn! Even a villainess loves a sexy hero!"
Wonder Woman and Black Canary rolled their eyes.
Black Canary and Green Arrow took on Red Volcano, Wonder Woman and Superman took on Mammoth, Batman took on Firefly, Vixen took on Copperhead and Flash took on Captain Boomerang.
Wonder Woman lasso'd Mammoth and yanked him to her with his face meeting her boot.
Superman grabbed a street light pole and wrapped it around him.
He smiled at Wonder Woman. "Well that was-"
"Superman?"
He paused and quickly grabbed her moving her out of the way. Then Wonder Woman raised her arm around him blocking four bullets.
"Almost had both of you! This is going to be interesting!"
"Who is that?" Superman questioned.
"Deadline…highly regarded mercenary." Batman informed through the communicator.
"Deadline? Sounds like a villain for me regarding getting my articles to Perry."
Wonder Woman giggled.
"Just watch out," Batman warned annoyed.
Deadline shot his rifle only for Wonder Woman to block yet again.
"I want you, pretty lady," Deadline grinned menacingly pointing his rifle at Wonder Woman.
Superman's eyes turned a fiery red and as he was about to charge at Deadline, Wonder Woman stopped him.
"I got this, Kal."
"Diana?"
"Go help Barry."
"Di?"
She smiled and winked at him. "I can handle this."
Kal sighed. "I know you can but still be careful."
"I will."
Superman flew off. Wonder Woman turned her attention to Deadline.
"Good. Good. It's me and you, pretty lady. I've been watching you. Waiting for my chance." Deadline threw his rifle down.
"Ah, so at least you aren't too much of a coward."
"I think it's better for us to get more closely acquainted."
"Hmm…I agree. We can certainly get acquainted."
Deadline laughed and darted towards Wonder Woman.
He swung his fist at her as Wonder Woman ducked and uppercutted him in the stomach. Deadline then grabbed her legs and threw her on the ground.
"It's best you stay down."
Wonder Woman scoffed getting up and as she jumped in the air and leaned her right leg at Deadline, he tried to grab her foot but she quickly switched with her left left foot colliding with the side of his face sending him flying across the street.
As Deadline was getting up, Wonder Woman flew above him and slammed his face in the ground.
Deadline flipped and threw Wonder Woman over his shoulder but Wonder Woman caught herself in midair. Wonder Woman dashed toward quickly and kicked Deadline in the jaw. The sound of teeth breaking and blood spraying from his mouth.
"How's that for acquaintance?" Wonder Woman asked sarcastically.
Deadline spat out more blood. "You, bitch."
"Am I?"
Deadline was enraged with Wonder Woman making a fool out of him. He charged at her only to be kicked in the face and finally getting knocked out unconscious.
Wonder Woman sighed. "How tedious that was."
"Woah! Woah! Come on, give a guy a chance!" Green Lantern said as he created a bouquet of flowers for Giganta.
Giganta only swatted him along with Superman and Shazam as if they were flies.
Wonder Woman frowned and flew up to Giganta.
"Lantern, this is not the time for you to be so damn childish!"
Wonder Woman punch Giganta instantly knocking her out unconscious and she fell backwards.
"Really?! I said I had her!"
"No…you didn't, and I mean not even close to getting her number."
"Ooh…ouch!" Shazam snickered.
"Shut up, kid!" He turned his attention back to Wonder Woman. "You know, no need to be jealous. There's plenty Lantern to go around."
Diana scoffed.
"Come on. You know you've wanted me. Don't try to act like you don't."
"It's definitely not an act, you conceited arrogance ass! I see why Carol washed her hands of you."
"Alright, I tried to be nice! But you are always one stuck up b-"
"Say another word, Lantern!" Superman warned.
"Or what?! She got you whipped, Boy Scout. But won't even let you-"
All of a sudden, Lantern was silenced with a punch in the face.
"Wonder Woman!" Superman quickly grabbed her from behind hold her back. "Hey, calm down."
"I'm not going to let him disrespect you…us, anymore! I'm tired of it!"
"She punched me!" Lantern whined.
"I'll do it again!"
"Diana…" Superman whispered softly in her ear. "Wait until we get back to the Tower."
She took a deep breath.
"If you all are done, we need to get them to A.R.G.U.S," Batman said.
"Wonder Woman and I will stay to talk to the main jeweler. Make sure everything is still here," Superman said.
"Fine."
Clark kept glancing at Diana as she was patiently waiting for the jeweler to finish her inventory.
"Di?"
"Mmhm?"
Clark grabbed her hand and pulled her to him.
"Hey, look at me."
Diana sighed and looked up at him.
"What's wrong, Di?"
"Nothing, Kal."
"Nothing means something. Come on, talk to me."
"It's nothing, Kal. Not right now."
I can't tell him. Not yet.
"So it is something but you won't tell me now. Does it still involve the League?"
"Partly."
Clark stared at her for a moment.
"Okay. I'll…I'll drop it for now."
Another two hours passed…Back at the WatchTower
Diana wanted some time alone in her quarters before the meeting with the League.
Meanwhile, Clark and Bruce were in the monitoring room checking up on something they've been tracking.
"Are you serious, Bruce?! I wasn't expecting all of this! How the hell am I going to tell her this?!"
Bruce had a multitude of images and videos of Keith with different women. As well as even messages from text and emails meeting women for one night stands.
"They weren't serious…barely together but dammit! Diana didn't deserve this! This is why he wanted me out of the way. Diana felt as if she was in the wrong going by her instincts not to give him much of her time!"
"Calm down, Clark! If you go to her like this it's just going to make things worse."
"I know that. But Bruce, I told her to go to that damn party with him. I told her to give him a chance. I screwed up, Bruce. I have no idea how I'm going to explain to her th-"
"Explain what to who?" Diana asked stepping in.
"Di…" Clark instantly became nervous.
Bruce quickly turned off the monitor screen.
"You seriously didn't hear her coming?" he questioned Clark
Clark glared at him.
"Was that Keith?"
"Hold on, Diana. I need to explain something before-"
She frowned. "Before what, Kal? Just show me now."
"Diana, wait a minute."
"Kal, Bruce, show me."
Clark sighed. "Go ahead, Bruce."
When Bruce turned the screen back on, Diana gasp.
"Diana, I-" As Clark was reaching for her hand Diana moved back from him.
"How long have you two been doing this?"
"Diana…"
"HOW LONG?!"
"A few weeks."
"And you didn't think to tell me any sooner, Kal!"
I shouldn't take my anger out on him. That's not at all what I'm doing. But I still should've known all of this sooner.
"Diana, I'm just now seeing all of this myself and trying to figure out how to tell you"
"All you had to do was tell me what you two were doing in the first place from the very beginning! I would've said no right then to going to that awful party! I wouldn't have had to be subjected to such humiliation and Keith trying to-"
Clark frowned. "Trying to what?"
Diana looked away from him.
"Diana, look at me!" Kal cupped her cheek. "What was he trying to do?"
She stared intently in his eyes then sighed.
"He tried to force himself on me…" she said lowly.
"He what?!"
"He didn't come close to doing anything more other than ripping my dress sleeve. I slapped him. Although, it could clearly be understood what happened, everyone was more concerned with him. He was drunk but that's no excuse because his intentions were clear even before then."
"Diana, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have told you to go. I thought that…" Kal's eyes suddenly went red and he smashed his fist on the table breaking it in half. "I'm going to kill him!"
"No! Kal, stop! This is exactly why I didn't want to tell you yet if at all!"
"Diana, I was trying to be supportive from afar but I did ask Bruce to keep tabs on him because I knew he couldn't be trusted. I took that chance because I thought that maybe I was wrong and selfish. But now that it's confirmed he wanted me out of the way thinking he could try to take advantage of you, I be damned if I let him get away with that!"
"I can handle it myself just like I handle the party alone."
"No, you are not going anywhere around him alone."
"I don't need you with me, Kal. Where is he now, Bruce?"
Bruce remained silent.
"Bruce!"
"Bistro du Midi."
"Wait a minute, Diana." Clark grabbed her hand.
"Kal, I need to do this."
"Diana, please. Let me go with you."
"You've done enough."
"I-"
Diana stormed out of the monitor room.
Clark was stuck watching her leave.
"I did not plan to be dealing a pissed off Kryptonian and Amazon," Bruce grumbled.
"Dammit!"
"She's a grown woman. She can handle it, Clark."
"I know that. But I'm still suppose to be by her side no matter what."
