Master Control

Chapter 62

Let's take it from the top again shall we?

Melissa Shield, daughter of a big scientist guy who apparently helped make this massive technological wonder of a city floating through the ocean. He was smart, smart enough to invent a new revolutionary biotechnology that incorporated nanomachines to actively repair and rejuvenate the human body. She must be pretty smart too because she managed to create her own strand of nanites that could assemble basic matter and arrange themselves into advanced machinery.

Oh, and don't forget that just about everyone in the world had superpowers. Except her, until today.

What was first thought to be a complete disaster of an accident turned out to be the work of a close coworker of her father's who hijacked the whole project. A creepy dude who turned everyone in the city into massively grotesque monsters that rapidly mutated their powers to be way stronger at the cost of their minds.

It just so happened that because she didn't have powers, just like him, the nanites didn't do anything to her genetics but instead merged the command module she was wearing into her body somehow and now she can make massive machines.

Right now, she was trying to stop him from turning a world of super powered people into a bunch of super monster slaves.

She forgot to also mention that she was suffering from amnesia, and the only reason she knew all of this was her only ally who could turn into a bunch of aliens. Like that somehow fit into all of this.

Was life really this crazy all the time? Or was it just one of those days?

Dodging a massive chunk of the road that was flung at her by a mutated human monster that could control gravity, Melissa guessed it must be a rather unusual day compared to the norm.

"Ooh ah!" The blue alien monkey that was Izuku Midoriya landed on a streetlamp. "Why aren't you using your powers?!"

"I've never fought anyone before!" Was all she could get out before her feet were lifted from the ground as she was pulled into the air.

A quick webline latched onto her back, pulling her into the boy's arms as he jumped to a far building to take her from the fight. "I'll be honest, I can store you in the omnitrix and keep you safe but you're the only option I have so far of actually curing people."

"Don't you dare put me in that alien watch!"

He was about to retort with something but his senses picked up on a barrage of metal pikes hurtling towards them. The boy swiftly leapt away, twirling himself through the several deadly obstacles like it was completely natural.

Then another force of nature overpowered them both and began to throw them into a tight orbit. They went faster and faster, her vision spinning rapidly. Izuku thought fast, using his tail to shoot out a web towards the person they were orbiting around. It struck true, and quickly coiled around the attacking creature and pulled them closer to it.

With two of his four arms Izuku threw a mighty punch towards the bound enemy, halting her control to allow him to send out another webline to escape the current battle. After gaining some distance for now, Spidermonkey touched down on top of a building and held Melissa out at arms length.

"Look Melissa, if you don't want to go in the watch fine. But I can't fight them like this. I mean, I have to worry about the fact that they're my friends and I have to worry about any damage that might happen and-"

*CRASH*

"Ugh." Spidermonkey sagged his shoulders before flipping backwards onto the ledge. "Ok, I have to go back and make sure people still have homes to go back to. Once I'm done fighting a whole city I'll come back for you."

He flicked something out to her, Melissa's hands flying out to try and grab it before it hits the ground. It was some kind of communicator she could tell, with more functions she couldn't identify at the moment.

"Call me if you're in danger." Was the last thing he said before falling backwards, descending back into the fight.

Was he planning on fighting all of them? A whole city of mutated citizens with so many abilities and she was just going to sit here and wait till it was all over? She was willing to fight, she just didn't know how competent she was in herself.

Her machines though, the ones she designed repeatedly until they were muscle memory, she knew them inside and out. What they could do, how far they could be pushed, and just what would happen to the receiving end of their function.

While she lacked confidence in throwing a punch, she had plenty of faith in a fist of metal of her design.

"Ok." She bounced between her feet, wagging her hands to get the blood pumping through her body. "Ok ok ok ok. I hope I did something stupider in the past because I don't want to set a new record."

Pulling her goggles over her eyes, her footsteps slowly traced themselves to the corner of the skyscraper. Glancing down, Melissa could only calculate just how her body would react to traveling from here to the asphalt below.

Great, now she needed a way to keep her mind off that.

Her hand reached up towards the goggles on her head, retracing the steps that her body always did whenever her mind was stressed or needed a distraction. It shuffled a playlist, continuing from where it last left off.

Catching Up - by Orange

*Bmbm tsk bmbm tsk bmbm tsk* The drums set the tempo, building up the energy she could feel bounding through her. She didn't know what the song was about or what would be next, but the anticipation built up rapidly and before she knew it her body had already taken the leap. That leap also went right off the skyscraper.

A short yelp escaped her mouth, but the guitar shredding in her ear distracted her from any fright. Instead, she followed the music. Trying to follow after Izuku to be able to help.

Letting the nanites flow through her body and following the pattern laid out in her mind, a massive pair of metal wings tipped with propeller-like engines constructed themselves onto her back and rocketed her to the massive tower ahead.

Olay olay olay olay olay, olay, olay

Olay olay olay olay olay, olay, olay

Her flight path between the buildings was interrupted when the same gravity welding foe crashed into the street, immediately taking notice of Melissa and rising back up to face off against her.

You've got what I want you got what I need to feel like I made of something

Taking a multitude of factors into account, Melissa tilted her engines enough to face them towards her opponent. The tops of the propeller covers shot forward like battering rams, connected to cables for her to recall if needed. What was Ochaco threw her hands to the side, each one swerving off course and harmlessly around her mutated body.

On this path I walk where do I begin between where I'm going and where I've been

Melissa threw her wings to reverse, halting herself mid air and reeling in the cables of her bludgeons. They wires went taught, zipping back and bringing the massive balls of steel to hit the mutant behind herself.

I don't wanna fall down cause I'm afraid I might break

Her enemy temporarily twirled through the air until she caught herself, hovering just ten feet from the ground. If it had a face it would definitely be scowling right now, curling its fingers into fists as the air was suddenly pulled by her power.

I'm stuck for words stuck what to say

An unseen force yanked on Melissa hard, her hair nearly ripping out of her head as everything on her was pulled down. Her engines whined in the streets just to keep herself leveled, but with extra weight dragging down at the edges of her wings the road was slowly inching towards her.

I let myself down with the way that I think

The machines on her back retracted, reverting back to its swarm of nanomachines in her blood. Her body rocketed down towards the earth and was mere seconds from turning into red paste.

I feel like I'm an outsider who's always looking in

Her legs flexed, covering themselves in mechanisms and layers of protective material until they were enlarged versions of her own limbs. They cracked the road upon impact, absorbing the blow as she bent down into a deep squat.

It seems my whole life I've been catching up

Pistons and hydraulics shot forward, Propelling Melissa barely above one story but close enough to her target that wasn't too high up either. Swinging one of her legs in a wide sweep she caught the monster by her gut and kicked the wind out of her.

It seems my whole life I've been catching up

They kept rolling through the air, caught by a metal whip thrown out from Melissa's arm and dragging her back into the fight. Once within arms reach Melissa drew back her left arm, creating one of her new favorite machines and crashing her steel knuckles into Ochaco's body.

It seems my whole life I've been catching up, with you

Just as she pressed her anvil of a palm down atop the monsterized Ochaco to keep her in place, slivers of shadows moved through the sky. They began falling down in a shower of spears, each made of different materials but all raw and jagged. A single figure could be seen swerving between them, the Arachnichimp dancing in the moonlight above.

Jealous and done can I be the one

When his body changed in a flash of green, it alerted Melissa of all the weapons of death soaring down towards her. Keeping her right arm to pin her fallen opponent down, she threw up her left. A small sturdy gauntlet of black shifted out of her skin, and facing it to the sky a wall of blue light materialized according to her will.

I'm always stressed loosing my sense of fun

The spears hammered away at her impervious shield, Melissa trying to look out for where Izuku could be or what he even was now. Landing next to her was a short plump humanoid…toad? "What does this one do?"

The little green alien smirked at her with his overly sized round chin becoming apparent. "He eats, a lot."

I see what i want not what i need I'm jaded over-complicated it is time to leave

Launching out of his mouth were several long thin tongues that slapped themselves onto a large golden shard pierced in the road. It ripped it out, folding the metal on itself and somehow fitting inside his awaiting maw. Izuku's new form was much smaller than what he was eating, but it all managed to pack itself inside of him and fuel his glowing stomach.

Loosing time off the clock talking to myself I wake up in the same position

A screaming voice came from above, like mountains of metals and liquids were screeching against each other. Melissa and Izuku turned Upchuck wanting to shield their ears when the swirling elements of a person leapt at them from above, and poured out a shower of lead onto them from its arms.

I'm bad at my nerves always been exposed just like a broken record running in circles

Her shield rippled from each hit, Izuku lying in wait just in front of her. The road nearly split in front of them once their new opponent crashed into the asphalt. If it had eyes they could identify it was probably glaring at them.

And didn't bother waiting for them to make the first move.

It seems my whole life I've been catching up

It threw its arm out, unleashing a wave of deadly gasses with whips of steel coming for them. Melissa released the weapons currently on her person, cutting out with her hand and letting a sword emerge to cut the whips as Izuku leapt upwards, unleashing an explosive glob from his mouth to detonate the cloud of death.

It was blinding.

It seems my whole life I've been catching up

Out of the simmering heat a roaring engine could be heard, and from the smoke a motorized battering ram charged right towards the beast. Melissa revved the handles on her hovercraft as it soared forward towards her target. The being rolled to the side, aiming its palm towards the girl as part of its mind pulled together what it could to create.

It seems my whole life I've been catching up

Upchuck's mouth snapped close onto its arm, just as the beast was pouring out whatever it could create. It panicked, wanting to get the creature off of it and only shoving more mass into its belly. It kept eating, and eating, Upchuck grew more plump the longer he kept his mouth clamped on. Once he swelled to the point he looked like he would pop, he burped.

So bring my, bring my berreta

The explosion bellowed out of Upchuck's mouth, launching the former Momo across the street and skidding across the sidewalk. She would have kept going, if Melissa wasn't already swinging a mechanized nunchuck dangling from her arm to smack into the foe's back.

So bring my, bring my berreta

It tried to regain its bearings, to get back on its feet and to lock onto a target. As soon as it could make out the green it was replaced with the metal, then back to the green. After a dizzying beating, it pushed itself back onto its shaky arms, and saw Melissa down the road with a fat cannon resting on her shoulder.

So bring my, bring my berreta

With a resounding BANG Upchuck was punched out of the cannon towards it, with a stomach pushing the contents up his throat. In a feeble attempt to stop its enemies, the monster ducked low and held its arms in a defensive position to create as much of a shield as it could. It immediately crumbled apart once a well placed sludge of alien goop burst upon contact, and from the dust came Melissa with a well placed punch.

Melissa was huffing as she waited for the corrupted person to get back up, to put up another fight. Luckily that wasn't the case, Upchuck waddling up and tapping the omnitrix on his chest to store the person away for later curing. Lowering her mechanized fists and collapsing their design back into her, she could feel herself drenched in sweat as her legs shook from the adrenaline.

"How-*huff*-are you not tired?" Melissa questioned the boy, who stared up at her oddly.

"What do you mean? We've only been fighting for two minutes."

Seriously?! Two minutes was all she could do before her body demanded rest?!

"I don't believe you." The girl made her thoughts known as she fixed her outfit.

"Well." Upchuck would admit it wasn't the whole truth. "I guess I did sort of do some fighting earlier carrying you around."

"Uh huh."

"On top of dodging several attacks before that."

"Keep going."

"I also sprinted across the Pacific when all of this started going down."

"...Anything else?"

"I, uh." Upchuck was starting to lose track of everything he did as he tallied on his inhuman hands. "Oh, I got first place in a villain challenge earlier. But that didn't last more than a few of seconds."

"...Really?"

"Three and a half actually."

"..."

"I've also been working out for a good part of my life."

"Mhm." She crossed her arms, waiting for him to go on because even with his alien face she could still see he was holding back. "And?"

"Each alien I turn into is in their peak physical condition."

One glance to his belly told him she didn't believe that.

Her ears perked up hearing low growling from nearby, Melissa reminded that this wasn't over. There was an entire city filled with mutated super people and they just managed to beat two of them that the crazy dude sent at them.

*BWOOSH*

"Come on." Izuku back in his human form motioned for the girl to follow. "Let's try to do some recon and figure out the best way to fix all of this."

Providence was still new, still establishing its proper channels and resources to be able to act across the globe. So far, it was just a short group of selected individuals who just happened to be aware or directly involved with one of the world's largest secrets. They didn't have proper funding yet, only shared assets. They didn't have proper teams or employees yet, only a few that were selected from an incredibly small circle.

Despite its fancy well equipped headquarters, they didn't have anything to use.

So they only listened as Izuku continued his report of the situation.

"Security inside the island is off, and everything looks like it doesn't have power. But we can still see lights along the perimeter walls and parts of the central tower. Melissa and I are moving towards the main laboratories to see if the canister Van Kleiss used to release the nanites still has primary command over the nanites."

"What about other dangerous mutants?" Agent Bubbles questioned aloud on behalf of the small amount of personnel gathered in Providence headquarters. "What's their status?"

"They're still around. They're most likely patrolling the area but not doing so actively. Most likely they're just wandering until they see something suspicious."

"Does that include All Might?" The walking mummy needed to know.

"I haven't seen him in a little while, but I imagine so."

"Continue your objectives." At the head of the table, Principal Nezu relayed the instructions. "If you discover any more plans Van Kleiss has relay them to us immediately."

"Yes sir, signing of-"

"Izuku." The man who had been watching over the boy for many years quickly interrupted, needing to give one last word of advice. "Be careful."

"Thanks Naomasa. I will."

Once the audio cut out, then the discussion over the next plan of action, or lack of, continued.

"We can't just sit on our asses!" Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi slammed his palm against the holo table, where I-island and as many details as could be collected were projected around it. "Even if it's drones, we have to send something in!"

"The island is still in siege mode." Principal Nezu calmly explained in his overly large command chair. "While it doesn't sound like internal security is online, to penetrate its defenses would take nothing less than a full military intervention."

"Then let's do that." Naomasa tried to propose, but found no one to agree with him.

Eraserhead was confident enough to justify their reasoning to the man. "If they see an island full of monsters, knowing it was caused by a weapon that managed to turn many of the world's top heroes, they'll just nuke it."

"Don't you trust the kid?" Cueball pointed towards the hourglass symbol sitting in the center of the island. "I mean, he's been doing great so far."

The detective crouched down, resting his head against the edge of the table as he fought every urge in his body to physically do something. A tingling came through him, provoking him to act but there wasn't much he could do besides talk. A solid hand rested on his shoulder, Agent Bubbles showing a rare sliver of empathy over it all.

"I understand wanting to keep youth out of the world's issues, there's a lot of them. We'll support him in anyway we can, but right now the only support we can give is giving him room to work."

"And by that-" The Principal held up a single pad of his paw to get the point across. "-we mean keeping those with a lack of faith in Izuku Midoriya from sinking the very city he stands in now."

The day was full of action, suspense, and danger creeping around every corner. So it was a weird change of pace to just be sitting here, on a blanket, with a plate of snacks and drinks grabbed from a vending machine. Sitting atop the rooftop of one of the buildings closest to the main tower, Melissa sat in place with her fingers skating along the keyboard before herself. It was so strange, having no real memory of developing these skills yet as soon as she tried it all just clicked together.

Fluttering wings above alerted her to her comrade returning, the largest, smelliest insect landing next to her.

"How is progress on your end?" Stinkfly asked, wiping a bit of the constant foul drool leaking from his mouth.

After she started to gag Melissa pinched her nose to save her senses. "Don't you have any better aliens? Ones that have basic hygiene?"

*BWOOSH*

Now back to human, Izuku kneeled down beside her and grabbed one of the drinks scattered around their makeshift hideout. "He blends in with the others pretty well."

"Don't you have some kind of techno alien or an electrical one?"

"Yes, and while they could avoid thermal detection there's a risk they could set off a second nanite chamber if I encountered it. What about you? You find anything?"

Turning the laptop over to Izuku, Melissa started to point out some of her findings. "Looks like I still managed to recall some passwords, and managed to delve a little deeper into some of the ongoing projects. From what you described, Van Kleiss only used a smaller demonstration chamber unit to turn the island into EVOs."

"EVOs?"

"Exponentially Variegated Organism."

"Huh, that feels better than calling this monster island."

"Yep." Melissa clicked over to a couple different tabs, some basic schematics displayed of a machine Izuku briefly saw in the main nanite experiment room. "But what I'm worried about is the main production chamber. It easily stores over a thousand times the amount of nanites that were unleashed."

Izuku with a thought gifted himself with Gray Matter's intelligence. With a new perspective on the schematics and his current observations, he was filled with dread. "He's siphoning off all the power he can spare into the primary nanite chargers. He's going to do what he did tonight but on a global scale!"

"Can he do that?"

"It may not be instant, but if he positioned I-island closer to one of the main continents he could convert a quarter of the human population in a single detonation, and as the nanites continued to disperse we could be seeing humanity driven to the edge of extinction."

Ok, so instead of worrying about curing an island they now had to save the whole planet. Their planet. This was all becoming much bigger than Melissa realized, a burden almost crushing her as the weight of the literal world fell on her back. She didn't really know what she was doing, or what she should be. All she could do is-

"Hey." The gentle hand of Izuku nudged her arm. "It's a lot. And even if the world is at stake, this isn't as bad as it seems?"

"Excuse me?!"

"Ok, it's super bad but we know what we're getting into! We know what he's planning and we know how to stop it, and reverse it!"

"That was one person!" The girl set the laptop aside, turning herself to face him fully. "And you want me to do that on a city wide scale?!"

"It doesn't have to be today." Izuku answered, trying to keep himself emotionally steady. "If needs be, we can do it one at a time. But let's look at the facts, without any memories you managed to take control over the billions of billions of nanites in your own bloodstream, cure someone nearly instantly, construct several machines of your own creation and fight off multiple monsters, all without training. If I didn't think you could help me I wouldn't be asking for your help now-"

Izuku considered himself to be on the higher end of average intelligence, and with his mind currently enhanced with one of the smartest beings in the omnitrix he could even contend to be one of the smartest people on the planet at the moment.

But he never would have guessed that Melissa would just kiss him like that!

It was over before he even registered it, Izuku slowly bringing his hand to his cheek to confirm that actually happened. Any chance he might have just imagined it for a short second was thrown out as he stared at Melissa, who was flushed and using her hair to hide her face.

Tense silence spanned between them, until Melissa tried to laugh it off. "It would be really awkward if I had a boyfriend I forgot about right now."

Oh she had no idea.

A thrumming noise began shifting through the island, the wind altering its course ever so slightly as the stars rotated above them.

"He's changing course." Izuku whispered out as they both looked over to the main tower.

"How long until I-island reaches the coast?"

"At full speed, a matter of hours. But that doesn't matter if he decides to detonate it early. Even at this distance he could still infect hundreds of millions."

Putting aside what just transpired, they both jumped up to their feet. No more delays, they needed to end this now.

Before I get into the nitty gritty of it all, I need to make one thing clear.

*Ahem*

THIS ISN'T A HAREM!

Things will get cleared up, Izuku and Melissa won't get together. As for those asking why I even bothered to write that kiss in the answer is simple. It makes sense for an amnesia girl with massive pressure and swirling emotions to latch onto a source of support. That support, just so happens to be the only non monster in the whole city around her age. It also adds a little spice and an excuse for Izuku to keep a reasonable distance from Melissa once this is over.

In other news, you know that big robot story I was wanting to write? I wrote it, and threw in a couple of chapters to it. The name is 'Soul Circuit', and if you're familiar with my other story 'My Iron Giant' this new one is the spiritual successor to the MHA big robot fic.

Go ahead and check it out, or not. Either way I'll still write for this one and probably that one later on too whenever I go through my 'I NEED A BIG ROBOT STORY!'

Stay chili my friends.

brave kid: I getcha

jeremyroberts369: I'm familiar with it, but the world doesn't seem to have much depth to it or much of any characters I like.

Puppy Leaf Owned: Even with doing the whole 'trick the omnitrix into splitting off my personality' none of the Ben's seemed competent during the split.

While all of those fights sound awesome I don't think I'll end up writing them all. It would just overwhelm the story if it's 90% action.

Thunder Dragon: I think many of Izuku's friends have already seen some serious action, and I've had more individual moments where they can show their stuff. One thing I've seen in some stories is that they spend so much time on side characters they end up taking away from the actual story, something I don't want to do. Though I can say there will be a chance for them to be back in the spotlight, briefly.

EndriRigs: There is another direction that I've been considering with Melissa, one where she doesn't lose her powers like you mean.

Omni-Trickery: The nanites mutate the quirk factor into the body, and since Izuku doesn't have one he's essentially immune.

Fire turtle: Max Steel isn't my thing, and it's not really a mecha one. I do like murder drones, but I don't think I'd write a fic out of it.

Uber Ghidorah: Years ago I tried out that story, but there didn't really seem to be a story and was more just of 'how can we make better fantasy mechs?'

Harleking31: Man, as much as I love that show I can't think of a different way I would've wanted that story to turn out. I enjoy it as is, I don't need a fic of it.

Geneva Convention Article 34: I have thought of a Legend of Korra crossover with transformers, but I don't have too much drive to write that one.

Guest: I can sort of see that.

Adam Jensen-AugmentedTF29Agent: Van Kleiss does make some good points, but no one could take him seriously if he lacks morality.
