Master Control
Chapter 63
There were so many stars in the sky, each burning brightly no matter their distance and swirls of multicolored gasses pulling at one another. It was endless, making anyone who viewed it all feel small in comparison.
Shoto Todoroki, floating in the expanse with no land or gravity to hold him down let himself glide through space. He took in a deep sigh, nothing filling his lungs but there was no suffocation. No warmth no cold, the only sensation he could identify was from touching his own chest.
Despite all of the questions he could have about how he was alive or why he wasn't in any kind of pain, there was one that kept going through his mind.
"How did I get here?"
The man hummed to himself, the entire lab to himself with no one to hold him back. How many times had he been limited by safety regulations, waiting for the other 'men of science' to understand what he was doing before signing off on his proposals, filing tedious paperwork to get a fraction of the money that others would get for putting a stamp on his work.
No more would the shackles of corporate dogs and pigs of money laundering pull the weight of his work down into obscurity. Everyone on this island contributed to this broken system, where the only thing anyone cared about was making their lives flashy instead of improved.
The world needed to be reset before it destroyed itself, and he was the only one willing to do that.
All he had to do, was make sure anyone that was strong enough to stop him would be under the influence of his nanties. That's right his. David's daughter might have conjured a proof of concept, and David Shield himself might have assisted in making the large scale project possible with his obsession over their medical potential, but only Van Kleiss truly had the expertise to create a swarm that would take the world by a storm of his creation.
Carefully he adjusted the capacitors cycling the energy to the primary nanite chamber. He had to wear welding goggles not to blind himself by the sheer brightness that was emanating from it. The only difficult part of this whole ordeal was faking the results of the nanite's efficiency in order to get as many as he would need for his biggest act yet.
The only concern that was left was Melissa. Who knew she was clever enough to create a portable command module. Van Kleiss was aware her quirkless genes would spare her from the influence from rapid quirk integrated evolution, but for her to also be able to have control over the nanites? It was a risk, but one that should be eliminated with his army keeping her at bay.
He had yet to see the two he sent after the girl and the anomaly return. Perhaps he could divert his attention to making sure the area was secure.
Turning away from the work stationed all around himself, Van Kleiss removed the goggles from his head and went to the thick doors sealing the lab from the outside world. With a flex of his gauntlet, the nanites inside the walls ordered the mechanisms to unlock.
As he walked out from the room he passed by the two guards he had stationed there, the best heroes japan had to offer, or what had become of them were loyal to him now and him alone.
"If anyone besides me arrives, kill them."
A mere grunt from the upside down smile on the reddened face of All Might merely grunted, as a huff of smoke escaped the walking mass of burning charcoal. He left them, going off to reset the parameters of the security drones and sending a couple of them out to locate Melissa and her monkey sidekick.
Of course, if all else failed he did have one particular individual he put much more effort into creating to serve as a failsafe. All thanks to a little deal with the devil, he was given just a couple vials of 'nomu' blood in exchange for some specialized nanites.
Within a single abandoned room, a void blacker than the shadows materialized in the center. Stepping through the rift came Melissa's foot, the rest of her soon after. Izuku in his 'villain' form followed, hardly able to recognize Melissa's room from how lifeless it seemed. He glanced down to the girl, who felt like she was intruding in a stranger's place.
Her hand delicately lifted up a small photo frame, seeing a much smaller girl with a man and a woman who looked similar to herself. "My parents?"
"David Shield." Izuku answered in a more elegant voice. "Though I don't know much about your mother."
"That makes two of us. Handy alien though, teleporting us straight in."
"This particular one, believe it or not, is a human with a very intricate quirk that the omnitrix recognized as its own species."
Melissa tried to see behind the smog around his face, trying to locate the man hidden in the shadowy smoke. "So you can also turn into other people with quirks?"
"I didn't use to, but I can scan others' quirks and gift them to my own human self."
"How come you pick aliens then? Or are quirks just not as good?"
"It, doesn't sit well with me." Izuku admitted as he opened another portal beside himself. "I always dreamed of having a quirk to call my own but, to use someone else's quirk doesn't fill the void."
Melissa snickered at the unintended pun, taking another glance around the room as Izuku regained his bearings to find another closer, empty room to the nanite chamber. There was something on the ground she didn't recognize, a metal box on heavily supported wheels with all sorts of labels stickered around the outside. When she opened it up, she peered in and was confused by what was inside.
Some stone sphere? It had a crack running along its surface but it didn't seem to break all the way through.
"I have found our next path." Izuku informed Melissa as he widened the portal. The hallway is currently empty, but around the corner rests the lab where-"
A bright orange light came chasing after the portal, Izuku swiftly closing it before they could be roasted. His flaring eyes narrowed as Izuku mentally berated himself. "So that's where Kleiss has stationed Endeavor."
"Should we be worried about him?"
"I beat him while under severe maternal influence once. My main worry is that All Might would be close by. I shall remove them and keep them occupied, while you disable the IED our foe is preparing."
"Wait!" Melissa latched onto his tailored sleeve. "You said those two were the strongest in Japan right? I should help."
"There could be a remote detonation sequence we are not aware of that could be triggered at any time. Kleiss can still turn a frightening number of humans into EVOs given the island's current position."
"But, we could just barely hold our own last time! What makes this different?!"
"Simple." With a wave of his hand, Izuku transported them inside the lab itself. Not needing to sneak now that they were aware of their imminent arrival he elected to take the direct approach. "I don't have to beat them, just bring their attention away from you as you put things right."
The lab's main doors were crumpled under the EVO All Might's own hands, Endeavor's body burning beside him as they brought their fists back. Izuku made his move seconds before they did, filling the room with a whirlwind of empty space to take the fight elsewhere.
It cleared out, Melissa left with no opposition but her own will. She stood before the large container, lowering her goggles and adjusted them to prevent herself from being blinded. The floor under her was humming, power being pulled from all the island to supercharge the billions of trillions of microscopic machines that were held inside.
She quickly moved to the keyboard nearby, quickly finding her rhythm as she looked over the current progress. Oh wow that was a lot of power inside there, but she could just cut the power right? Nope, they were hooked up manually and she couldn't access the power grid from here.
Well what if she pulled the plug? Nope, it's too sensitive right now and any sudden changes could set it off.
What about a kill switch? There had to be plenty of them installed into nanites designed to interact with humans right?
Apparently they were all dummy switches! GREAT!
Smashing her head against the desk, Melissa wanted to bite the ankles of whoever managed to look past all of these safety hazards. Still, she tried looking for something, anything that could give her a clear answer to what could interfere. There was a chamber mechanism she could unlock, but even if she wanted to open that there was an electromagnetic shielding in place to prevent any active nanites from escaping. Maybe she could modify the barrier? No, it would take more power than she could divert to shift it an inch.
Turning it off, would just set the whole thing off-
*SCHLICK*
"AH!" Melissa felt a stinging pain enter her arm, something moving inside and pulling the nanites out of her blood. Fear managed to make her body move, creating a sword to slice away at whatever was plunged into her.
It clanged against Van Kleiss's extended gauntlet, the man detaching himself from Melissa but never losing his confident smirk. "Attempting to be a hero now? After you've resigned yourself to support work?"
She scowled, aiming her shaking arm towards the man and leveling her blade. "Turn it off."
He rolled his eyes, disappointed over the simple demand. "You know that's impossible during this stage. All either of us could do is prevent it from reaching full capacity. Even then, that chamber won't hold them for long."
Van Kleiss was right, the nanites with this much power would eventually wear down the protective shielding and create a breach of their own. But how was he-
The subtle glow on his harness, of course! Aiming the tip of her weapon towards it, she clarified herself. "You made a command module to give yourself control of all of the nanites inside there. You can turn it off."
"Clever, but missing something." Van Kleiss stepped ever so closer, not even bothering to push aside the blade as he rested his neck on it. "Even if I can directly influence a host I come into contact with, all I can do from a distance is give suggestions to those infected. Why do you think many of them lack speech? I had to dilute their already small minds to put my own will inside."
"Fine, you can't turn it off remotely." Melissa lowered her blade to the center of his harness, giving it a couple of taps. "Directly then."
She smirked seeing that she managed to guess right, Van Kleiss actually scowling at her observation. "Tell me, will you kill me if I can't?"
Kill? Could she? Would she? Melissa faltered, lowering her gaze and relaxing her arm as she questioned if she could really kill for-
*CRACK*
She snapped up, sword at the ready to fight. But the man before her, he wasn't fighting her, he crushed the command module under the grip of his own gauntlet.
"Now then." He took a seat, no command over nanites, no way to shut it down, reclining in his chair with his fingers laced together and his confidence restored. "How are you going to stop me now, Melissa Shield?"
Deep within the expanse of the night sky, a comet rocketed across the abyss and towards its target. The heat swelled around Endeavor's body as he flew just over the ocean, boiling the water under him and leaving a trail of steam.
He shot upwards, right towards the green enemy and primed a deadly fire in his palm.
Of course, with his bright body he was easy to spot.
*KABOOM*
Atomix saw it coming, and with a charged fist he swung a might punch and knocked Endeavor into the ocean. "Cool off for a second! I'm busy!"
*CRACK*
The air exploded across Atomix's face from the strength behind the attack, launching him miles away until he managed to regain his thoughts and control his flight. Sonic booms echoed all around him, All Might's EVO form punching off of the air to catch up to wherever the alien might go.
Atomix braced himself, unable to see where the mighty man was coming from but at least he could estimate off of where the last disturbance in the clouds was.
*CLANG*
Or not.
Atomix felt a dent in his back from the blow, throwing him down into the ocean with a thunderous splash. Two burning arms wrapped around him, roasting him alive under the depths of the quiet sea.
Atomix burned brighter, the canisters of atomic fuel burning brighter and hotter to give him more strength to fight with. He pushed himself out of the hold, gripping Endeavor's arm to spin him around and crash an explosive fist to his face.
The blast forced the water away, the charcoal body launched into the sky as Atomix floated in the gap in the sea. He managed to fly half a mile up before another heavy hit knocked him off course.
Izuku thought maybe Atomix would've been able to handle this. Endeavor yes, maybe All Might if he used the moves he studied so many times. Not when they're juiced up on monster fuel. As he rolled his shoulders and considered switching to another alien, the omnitrix flashed.
"Alert." The device announced. "Badge ID 'Melissa Shield' has been lost."
That, was near impossible. That would take Melissa leaving the galaxy, or the badge destroyed. If that broke, she was in HUGE trouble.
*BWOOSH*
A towering shadow splashed into the ocean, the comet that was Endeavor pivoting his flight path to intercept the much larger enemy. He got closer, burning himself hotter and hotter to illuminate the expanse, letting whoever was watching see the looming figure of Way Big.
Bringing his arm up, Way Big slapped the firefly out of the sky and crashed into the sea he stood in. Reaching back down and scooping Endeavor out, he saw the EVO was finally knocked out.
*CRACK*
"AH!" The alien winced, holding his jaw and quickly tucking the EVO away into the omnitrix. He couldn't see where All Might was anymore, but the moment he saw a section of the clouds break apart, he aimed his arms and let loose.
A brilliant beam of cosmic energy cut through the night sky, hitting the EVO head on and breaking his momentum. Way Big leapt upwards, not giving the man a moment to recover and clapped the smaller body between his two palms.
His eyes went back to the island off in the distance, the central tower flickering with one floor shining dangerously bright to make the whole tower look like a lighthouse.
Way Big surged forward, running across the water as his body moved faster than his brain. The only thing on his mind, was that Melissa was alright.
"RAH!" Melissa, with her bare knuckles hit the desk next to Van Kleiss, the man not bothering to move from his comfortable position.
"Don't worry, neither of us will be affected." He reasoned. "It only targets the quirk gene."
"TURN IT OFF!" She screamed again, creating her massive metal hands and holding them just over him.
"You know I can't." Van Kleiss said in mock empathy. "If you're nice, I might let you have your father back."
"I DON'T CARE!" She smashed another computer nearby, finding that nothing she punched was making her feel any better no matter how much her rage demanded it.
"That's a lie and we both know it." The man sighed over her tantrum. "You've looked up to him your whole life. So if you want him to get his back, I suggest-"
She grabbed him, seat and all and wanted to just squeeze a little tighter. "I don't need you to cure him."
"Hmm." He hummed thoughtfully, not feeling threatened in the slightest. "It's a shame really. I questioned whether or not I could have convinced you to help me. But despite our similarities you still can't grasp my goals."
"I can grasp things just fine." She threatened, increasing her grip a fraction.
"You still can't grasp that without my command module, there's no way to stop-"
She threw him, Van Kleiss hitting the far wall as the air was kicked out of his lungs. Melissa stomped forward, raising her fists and ready to just crush him underneath them. She wanted to, she should, he deserved it and more.
So why couldn't she?
The man chuckled underneath her, slowly picking himself up. "This is why a society focused on heroism can't last. Everyone is blinded by flashy costumes and empty ideals that no one even bothers to think of what they really need to do."
What a hero would do….
Melissa lowered her hands, the machines folding back into her as she began to think. What a hero would do.
They would go beyond to save the day.
"I need a command module to make contact with the nanites, right?" She asked aloud, mostly to herself than to Van Kleiss as she refocused her attention to the nanite chamber that was shaking in place.
The man could easily guess what she was thinking of, and worried for what could potentially happen to his work. "Direct contact would be needed, but at the state of the chamber the nanites would dissolve anything to enter."
"Not instantly." Melissa took a slow step towards it, followed by another one. "They still have their primary directives installed. They wouldn't be trying."
"But they would!" Van Kleiss called out, limping as he tried to catch up to her. "The overcharged state in a condensed space would boil anyone's blood, turn their bones to ash as they passed through the body instantly!"
"In thirty seconds." Melissa felt her pace steady itself, feeling scared but at peace at the same time. She could save them, she could save the world. "It only takes point zero one second to issue the command."
"Your mind would be burnt in less than five seconds!" Van Kleiss tried to reach out, stumbling as his foot caught one of the many cables across the floor.
"If I'm lucky." She couldn't imagine the pain her body would be in, how distracting it would be the moment she stepped inside. Her hand rested on the massive red button on the chamber, the one to open the main door. The electromagnetic shielding will keep the nanites inside, long enough for her to enter. She couldn't hesitate, she couldn't just try, because the moment she enters her body is going to do everything it can to get away.
Her shaking hand resisted, her muscles weakening as her heart began to hammer in her chest. It felt like everything was going numb, hazy, her body trying to shut down what she was trying to force herself to do.
The voice in the back of the room seemed to drown out as Melissa pushed her weight onto the threatening red button. Her ears were assaulted as a violent buzzing leaked out of the metal panel slowly sliding out. It was a doorway to the sun, the light flashing over her in a wave of heat.
Everything in her body SCREAMED to get away, her legs quivering as panic swelled in her gut until it forced its way through her pores. This was it. She didn't even have a full life to flash before her eyes, only a single night.
Waking up as people turned into EVOs around her. Being carried off from the scene, having monsters battling an alien trying to protect her, finding out aliens were real and this was a world full of superpowers and she managed to get one too. It would all have been overwhelming, too much for anyone to wake up to in this nightmare.
But there was someone there to help, someone there to ground her to reality even if they continued to shatter her perception of it. She barely knew him for more than a night, but he did so much for her. Gave her answers, fought for her, fought with her!
He believed in her, every step of the way and he still believed she could do this
Steeling herself and trusting in him, Melissa wouldn't let him down.
Taking in a deep breath and sharpening her gaze against the chamber, she kept her mind focused on the one last thing she would do with her life. Be a hero.
Jumping forward with her back leg, Melissa passed through the veil, and screamed.
Nothing could hear her, not herself not her mind, no one could hear her body scream out in agonizing torture. Every muscle tightened as lightning coursed through her flesh and seared it to her bones, keeping her from moving as fire lit across her skin and stabbed into every nerve all at once.
The last part of her soul that still clung to life made a wish, a wish to let everyone be ok, including the only person she felt she knew, that was a light of green in her life.
Izuku.
It was like she could still hear his voice as a cooling sensation embraced her. Death, had finally claimed her.
The shadow of the entity emerged from her chest, his obscured face rising to meet her own with a ring of that lovely green in the center. She listened, as he spoke.
"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" Izuku's voice screamed from it, muffled like it was artificial but still discernible.
Hold on, Izuku was death?
Melissa realized this wasn't right, she should be gone by now. A pile of ashes bouncing between nanites. Her voice, dried out and harsh called out in case he was listening.
"Izuku?"
The head bobbed down, shaking and quivering as she could hear him sniffling. "What were you thinking?"
"I was trying to save everyone, save you. It was the only way-"
"You didn't even try reaching out! I know sometimes it seems impossible but you are not alone! Ask for help! Don't throw your life away just to-"
"Please!" Melissa begged, raising her hands to seeing herself protected in a black metallic suit with green circuits running along it. "If I don't do this, the world ends! We lose and I can't lose the one person that I know!"
"You nearly died Melissa! There's another way where we all come out ok!"
"How?!"
"Together." He spoke calmly, assuring her that he was here and things really could turn out alright. "Just like we've been doing."
Melissa could feel a change in her, the microscoping machines that were flooding in her rushed in a new wave of power. It didn't burn, it didn't rip her apart, it felt right. The chamber began to shift, all the nanites inside heeding to the call of the command module inside Melissa as it spoke out in a powerful voice, stronger than it was ever designed to do.
She could feel it, Izuku somehow enhancing her own abilities and pushing them to a level higher than she could calculate.
"We're not just going to stop the bad guys, we're going to save people. There's something I've learned at my school, a motto that they teach to heroes. To go beyond-"
The metal capsule holding them exploded out, Van Kleiss shielding his eyes from the emerald energy enveloping itself around Melissa. She rose in the air suspended in her power, the highly energized nanites swirling in a protective cloud around her.
"Plus ultra."
I-island experienced another blast emanating from the central tower, a wave of light green particles rushing through everything and everyone. It wasn't the signal to stop a crisis, it was the start of something better, a revolution.
Every nanite, no matter where it was or what it was doing, was rushed with a new purpose. They swarmed through the island, nothing left untouched as they scrambled to fulfill their new directive. Restore, correct, put everything back to where it was supposed to be and undo the damage they had caused.
That included the ones in Melissa's body, repairing the recent damage that they caused all without any pain. When her feet touched the ground, the wave came rushing back after their purpose had been fulfilled. It flooded into the chamber they hovered inside, pushing it to its limits and threatening to break. Upgrade stretched out from Melissa's body to wash himself around the chamber walls, expanding it, improving it, until every part would be able to hold double what it was intended to.
With a significant improvement to the safety features. As they stepped out of the unsealed room under Upgrade's control, he slid himself off the metal walls and Melissa to pool his whole body back together and stand in his alien form.
Melissa found herself finally recovering, her mind released from the painful distraction earlier to where it felt like she was waking up from a horrible nightmare. Glancing back to the nanite chamber, now better than ever, she rasped her knuckles on the chrome metal to feel the change first hand. "Independent power supply?"
"Cut off from the rest of the island." Izuku confirmed as he stretched his arm over towards a nearby computer and briefly connecting himself to it. "Which means we can finally turn on everything else."
The screens flickered under his techno abilities as Upgrade patched himself into the security systems, confirming through several cameras that no EVOs remained, only people. Though the further he looked there was still one unaccounted for in the camera sweep. "Do you know where Van Kleiss went to?"
Van Kleiss! Melissa had forgotten about him when she was blindsided by the overwhelming pain that flowed through her body. Glancing back to where he just was, she saw no sign of him. Not the man, not a piece of clothing, and not his personal command module. "He was just here."
Upgrade, still connected to the island's security quickly focused one of the screens to playback recent video footage in the room. They both watched him arrive, the conversation, destroying his own tech, trying to convince Melissa not to put his efforts to waste, and then he was gone.
Stopping the video and backing up a few seconds, Upgrade scrolled through each frame as he zoomed in on the crouched man. He was talking aloud, no longer focused on Melissa, and then a crimson breach in space took him away.
"He got away." Melissa stated, more as a fact than an actual disappointment. She was still just happy to be alive and not a burnt crisp.
"We'll get him." Upgrade assured, before in a short flash of light returned to his human self in his casual attire, biker jacket and all. "And we'll have a lot more help this time around."
The omnitrix flashed momentarily, Izuku raising it to eye level as he opened the notification. "Woah, new alien."
"New?" Melissa leaned next to him, looking at the hologram displayed along the faceplate. "Do you unlock aliens or something?"
"The omnitrix can render new transformations. Guess all those nanomachines it's been exposed to gave it some new data to warrant a species from it."
The absurdity of how casual all of this was made Melissa smile as she finally gave herself a moment to rest. "Is there something new around every corner of life?"
He wanted to assure her that things can be normal, but he resigned himself to how unpredictable his life had been. "In my experience, yeah."
Izuku expected the inevitable crushing weight to fall down, to berate himself over mistakes and failures. But he was alive, Melissa was alive, the whole city that had been turned into EVOs was alive! The villain might have gotten away, but he had none of the nanites to work with anymore, none of the resources I-island had.
They won, and nobody died!
"Hey." Melissa came to him, concerned and cupping his face to wipe away a stray tear running down his cheek. "Izuku, what's wrong?"
Slightly embarrassed about his reaction, Izuku quickly rubbed the moisture out of his eyes and smiled brightly at her. "I'm just…it turned out so well this time. Most of the time, something bad happens or things go wrong. This time, everybody lived."
She returned his joy, relishing in their victory that they fought hard to achieve. Wanting to gain one more for herself, she leaned in to seal the day and-
"Incoming Transmission." The omnitrix announced, taking Izuku's attention away from her much to her displeasure.
"This is Nezu. Communications with I-island are reestablished. What's your status?"
Lifting his arm up proudly, Izuku was ecstatic to relay the news. "The residents are cured, nanites are secure, and I-island systems are back online. The villain got away but any concerning technology on his person was destroyed. We're ok, everyone's ok."
"Much needed news. Good work! Please locate David Shield and All Might and bring them up to speed. I'll work with them to deal with clean up. You get some well deserved rest now. If you look outside you should start to see the sun rising."
"Yes sir!" The fact that they had worked that late in the night didn't surprise Izuku in the slightest.
"Oh, and pick up Pony from Hawaii. I'm sure her mother will soon be looking for her."
Almost slapping himself for nearly forgetting, Izuku saw Nezu closed the call already.
"We're almost done." He mustered whatever energy he had left to keep himself awake. "We just need to get you to your father and All Might."
"And pick up a pony." Melissa reiterated what she heard earlier.
Knowing it might be awkward, no matter how he approached it, Izuku needed to make something clear. "It's, better if I pick her up myself."
"Why?" Bumping her shoulder against his, Melissa walked with him as they exited the lab. "Should I be jealous of a horse?"
She really didn't know.
"Pony, is a human." Izuku began, gauging her reaction.
"Huh, well I guess that makes more sense."
"She was there at the ball, where it all happened."
"Oh, so she's a friend or something?"
"She's my girlfriend."
"...oh."
Izuku closed his eyes, waiting for the inevitable punching or crying as he saw on so many shows. The silence, made him more worried. Peeking out with one eye, Melissa didn't seem all that hurt. Maybe a little given the long sigh she released, but other than that she just kept walking with him.
"I guess I shouldn't be surprised." The girl began. "You're a big time superhero. I bet you have millions of fans."
With a short chuckle, Izuku kept his pace as he realized there was so much to catch his new friend on. If she still wanted to be one that is. "So, are we good? I'm not used to having people feel that way about me. Pony's the only one I've ever known to but, I still think we worked really well together today."
"Yeah." Melissa clicked open the main door for them, allowing the two to step out into the rising sun encompassing their lives. "Looking forward to any other team ups, alien boy."
"Same to you, robot girl."
And that's the end for that. In truth, most of this story was written a day after the last chapter. I went camping with my wife, so all I had to add was the last little bit and bam I can post it. I contemplated all the aftermath of the island, tons of people's reactions and such but honestly I could just use some of that to make another slice of life style chapter where Izuku just chills and relays the story to his little club friends.
Which is pretty much a good portion of Class 1-A at this point.
So, we get a couple chapter now of down time and unwinding from the danger. Then we go into the next arc, where Izuku looks into the existence of another omnitrix in his universe that's a lot closer than he realizes.

Harleking31: There was already a massive canister of nanites Van Kleiss had to work with, and he pumped almost all of I-island's power into it. He turned the last one into a bomb so Izuku didn't want to accidentally set off another highly juiced up bomb that would devastate the world.
brave kid: While it was entertaining to read the many ideas of how a spin off could go, in the end I had already written most of the chapter already after you had pitched the ideas. Though I did leave it open ended, so that if I decide to ever do more of a spin off of Melissa's story then I could.
Giltlawyer9000: The only problem with that is Pony doesn't have enough legs to walk.
