His father taught him the art of throwing his voice as his father did before him and Paul put it to good use since he started adventuring, like so.

It took work luring the mechanical horror to where he needed it to go while Taylor helped ensure it wouldn't get distracted by anything that it wasn't supposed to, though it went seemingly easier than expected, which only sought to unnerve Paul more than anything.

As he and Taylor prepared their next set of plans for dealing with the brothers as they'll be too occupied with the mechanical horror that Gerald created to notice until it was too late.

"Paul, what about your Sonic Screwdriver?" Taylor asked about that and Paul explained that he'll get it back, all he needed to do was trick the Thornton brothers into using it.

His uncle taught him the intricate workings of ensuring that his Sonic Screwdriver never fell into the wrong hands and if it did, it wouldn't work the way they hoped.

And Ace helped with ideas, much to his uncle's chagrin.

She is quite a creative person, though outfitting the Sonic Screwdriver with a bomb wasn't exactly what Paul had in mind.

"Remember my dear, if anything happens, there's enough juice to open a tear into the TARDIS," Paul tells Taylor that if anything went wrong with their plan, if anything remotely looked as though Taylor was at risked, Paul will open a small tear to send her away from the danger.

He felt the energy fluctuating in the air, unseen, he once explained this to Taylor as spinning around quickly with hands outstretched, feeling the air quickly flowing in between the fingertips like water.

Whatever the TARDIS planned on doing, ensuring the mechanical horrors within the former Williams' home couldn't escape was in motion, as well, and Paul expected it to alert him in some way.

One can only imagine what the TARDIS planned, stirring the energy like this, but whatever it had in mind, it's certain that it'll be enough to destroy the Thorntons once and for all.

Though before that point, something bothered Paul enough that he had no other choice but to trust his instincts and search out the book mentioned.

Doubt it'll have anything left considering the damages done to it, but knowing Gerald he'll keep whatever's left of it around for his uses.

He wouldn't let his brother know where he put it either, despite what he and Harold claim, Paul saw through Gerald.

Gerald wouldn't allow his brother any significant control over their shared body, much less let him peek into the book that resulted in their mechanical lives.

Gerald would do everything to keep control, ever since the accident that resulted in his crippled leg, and his coveted title as Lord Thornton would've naturally gone to Harold.

Centuries later, Gerald hadn't changed at all, only gotten better about showing his true colour, especially where his brother's concerned.

If anything, he promised Harold a body of his own to get him off his back, but now he'll have to see it through, and well, Paul knows for a fact, that won't happen.

With that said, Paul knows how to turn Harold against Gerald, ensure the inevitable brothers' quarrel once Harold discovered the betrayal.

Gerald will do everything to deny it, of course, but Paul will have the proof, the book he gotten from the merchant, which Paul planned on taking with them once this adventure's settled.

Paul doubted Harold even saw it outside a few glimpses, maybe Gerald made sure Harold wasn't "active" when he cracked it open for his uses.

Maybe, Paul speculates as he's quietly going through the dimly lit fireplace scouring for the book with Taylor's aid, Harold always had doubts about his brother.

Wouldn't be the first time this happened and maybe Harold always had doubts about his brother's altruism.

Gerald already showed his hand, kidnapping Harold's lover, turning her into one of his creations, before turning on his brother, even if he said otherwise, Harold wouldn't have easily trusted him.

Only went along with it as his situation changed, but perhaps caught on long enough to quietly scheme a way out of it and ensure Gerald got his comeuppance.

His angel eyes scouring the shelves, Paul went through the dozens of books that either belonged to the Williams or picked up by Gerald.

Gerald grew complacent and didn't think to put the book that gave him the aspirations needed to turn him into the mechanical horror that he is, now.

Ignoring all the new books and editions, Paul scours until Taylor found the book tucked away in one of the shelves.

In her hands, Taylor looked at the marred book, smelling heavily of the fire that engulfed it.

She presented it to Paul and he took it into his hands, curiosity in his eyes as he opened the book, much of the pages damaged beyond recognition, but the few that weren't, something caught his eyes as he thumbed through the pages.

The few writings that survived the ages weren't in English, not even an old dialect, instead it's an unusual dialect of Latin.

His angel eyes slowly moving over the pages, Paul translated it with ease.

"Paul, what is it?" Taylor asks him.

She sees a change in his mood that seemed out of character and though she tried to touch his arm, he didn't respond to her question.

He never got the chance at all, as they heard the commotion happening on the first floor.

The mechanical horror caught up to its creator.

There's a loud commotion as something went down the flight of stairs, a loud crash, rapid footsteps from above the top of the staircase.

A loud bang resonating through the house as if someone threw something at the ceiling.

Taylor's hands covered her mouth as she held herself from letting out a gasp.

Paul's breath hitched.

Everything seemed to fall silent save for the sounds of footsteps getting louder as Paul stood frozen in place.

Crashing noises, the sounds of glass shattering, stomping noises, it sent Paul to run to the hidden passageway behind the bookcase with Taylor close by his side as they fled the chaotic fighting happening outside the library door.

With the book in hand, Paul had that part done, now he and Taylor needed to resolve the Thornton legacy once and for all.

"Obey!" They heard the snarl coming from the disheveled Gerald, attempting to wrangle control over the mechanical horror that had turned on him.

It'd be a perfect point to leave the brothers to their fates at the hand of the mechanical horror, but Paul had a duty as the Doctor to see this through, and he will.

He also wanted to retrieve his Sonic Screwdriver, still in the possession of the brothers.

Going through the cramped space behind the wall, Paul led Taylor through the darkness, feeling the heat as he determined where they were in the darkness.

He checked Taylor more than once, making sure she was okay, the situation tense as it was, and the sudden noises of things being thrown around, even things being thrown at the walls, some heavy enough to breach the hidden passageway.

"I'm fine," Taylor choked on the disturbed dust as the walls became assaulted by objects as someone with incredible strength threw things at someone else.

It's chaotic enough that Paul didn't think the brothers would pay any attention to them, too busy trying to survive.

"Doctor…" he heard a soft voice in his mind.

Nondescript, didn't sound either man or woman, brief, but Paul heard it clear as he responded inwardly, "Yes?"

He heard back, "It's… almost… time…"

Time?

Time for what?

Paul called out to the voice what it meant and he heard the soft response, "There will be… another fire…"

Another fire, just like the one that nearly destroyed the brothers before, this one will be different, intense, it will be the very thing that kills the brothers once and for all.

"What are you planning?" Paul asked the soft voice what is supposed to happen to cause the fire and the soft voice replied that there will be one last battle between the brothers, making no mention of the mechanical horror made by Gerald, when that happens, the fire shall consume them both for the final time.

"Have faith… Doctor… in the… plan," the soft voice encouraged Paul to follow its unknown plan before it disappeared from his mind, leaving him to his own thoughts.

Never found the origins of the voice, he thought it might've been the TARDIS, but it wasn't, he checked for that after the first time, but the TARDIS didn't possess the capabilities anymore.

Not since its rare part had been used in the showdown between men and a madman.

His father didn't know anything about the voice, neither did his uncle.

A strange thing to happen to him of all people, but that's presumably because he was the Doctor.

There's a scream by Taylor as something slammed so hard into the brick wall, it punctured it entirely, almost clipped her shoulder, if not for Paul yanking her away in time.

Their escape was short-lived when the brick wall ahead of Paul came down in a loud clatter, hands grabbing him first, Taylor couldn't escape their grasp when they grabbed her afterwards.

Thrown to the ground, Paul struggled to recover before he felt the sharp tip of the rapier in his chest, a voice calling out to him, dripping with rage, "Hello, Doctor."

It's the shambling corpse of Arthur Williams, part of his face missing, exposing his bloody red metallic skeleton, when he spoke, Paul heard Gerald's voice.
