Chapter 31: Smith and Jones

Jack pressed the button on the remote and the screen came on. It showed the TARDIS hurtling through the vortex and the name Martha flashes across the screen.

Martha smiles excitedly. She was looking forward to see what else she would get to experience with the Doctor. So far she hadn't really clicked with the others in the group except Mickey, sure they were all nice to her but Jack had gotten on immediately with Rose and looked to be getting closer to Donna. Sarah-Jane already knew Rose so they got on really well and she was feeling a little left out.

Martha is walking down a busy London street, listening to a rap song on her phone radio. Her phone rings and she answers in saying someone is up early. She has a conversation with her sister, brother, mum and father, all arguing about her dad bringing Annalise. A long-legged blonde, young white woman joins Clive in the car.

"Does that happen a lot?" Donna asks sympathetically.

"Yeah. Mum and dad fight and then Tish and Leo ask me to fix it." Martha agrees.

"I can see why your dad bringing Annalise would upset your mum though." Mickey winces.

Martha finally gets off the phone and the Doctor walks up in front of her and says 'like so' while taking off his tie. He walks away again.

"What on Earth are you doing?" Jack asks curiously.

"Proving something to Martha." Ten grins.

Martha arrives at the Royal Hope Hospital, and a man in full motorcycle gear barges past her. She tells him to watch it. The figure turns to stare at Martha, then walks on.

"Rude." Rose scowls.

Inside, at her locker, Martha puts on a white coat, then gets an electric shock from the door.

"Locker doors don't normally give electric shocks, do they?" Mickey questions.

"Not usually." Martha tells him.

On a ward the consultant and his students are gathered around a woman's bed. The consultant, Mister Stoker, is taking her pulse. She explains her symptoms and Stoker asks the students for ideas one by one. The first students offers early onset diabetes.

"Doesn't look particularly early onset." Donna laughs.

He takes a couple more guesses until he asks the patients diet and reveals it is a salt deficiency. Stoker leads his students from the Breast Screening Unit to the Orthopedic Dept, past the lifts. Two figures in full motorcycle leathers get out.

"How come they are allowed to wander around with their helmets on. I thought you had to take those off in hospitals?" Sarah-Jane asks. Martha simply shrugs.

"You humans will ignore the strangest of things." Nine says.

"Like a 1960's police box in the middle of Cardiff?" Rose laughs.

"Exactly." Ten nods happily. "Although the TARDIS does have a mild cloaking device that doesn't make it invisible, just people's eyes slide right past it unless you know exactly what you're looking for." He explains.

Stoker pushes back the curtain around a bed. He asks how Mr Smith is doing today.

"You really should change your fake name every now and again." Donna tells him. "One day it'll make you dead easy to find."

The Doctor says he's not so bad. Stoker tells the students his symptoms and asks Martha what she can find. Martha moves around the bed and tells him it wasn't very clever to go running around outside.

"Wasn't me." Ten grins. "Well, not me at that time."

He looks confused and she explains about him taking his tie off earlier. He asks what he did that for.

"Like she would know why you randomly took your tie off." Mickey rolls his eyes.

"He does like to ask stupid questions occasionally." Jack sniggers.

"I do not." Ten protests.

"Asking Rose why she lives in her flat?" Donna points out. He rubs the back of his neck sheepishly with his free hand.

She says she doesn't know. He denies it was him as he was here in bed. Martha asks if he has a brother and he replied not anymore.

"You had a brother?" Martha asks.

"Not biologically. I had a best friend who I considered my brother." Nine tells her. Ten just frowns sadly.

Stoker tells her to stop chatting and she listens to his chest, hearing two heartbeats. The Doctor winks at her.

"Now that must be confusing. You're lucky it was Martha doing the examination." Sarah-Jane says.

Stoker states he weeps for future generations and asks if she is having trouble locating the heart. The Doctor raises an eyebrow at Martha as she guesses stomach cramps. Stoker corrects that is a symptom not a diagnosis. He adds she failed basic techniques by failing to check the patient's chart first.

"He's a delight isn't he?" Mickey grumbles.

"He's a great teacher just a tad impatient." Martha smiles slightly. Then she frowns remembering what happened to him.

Stoker gets an electric shock from the metal clip. The students all chip in that the same thing happened to them in various places. Stoker tells them it is to be expected with a thunderstorm moving in. He asks who first proved lightning is a form of static electricity. The Doctor answers Benjamin Franklin. He continues talking about how he met Ben.

"Not the place, Doctor." Rose rolls her eyes.

Stoker tells them to move on, suggesting the Doctor needs a visit from psychiatric to one of the nurses.

"Probably true but an alien one would be better." Jack snickers.

"Oi!" Nine complains.

Martha and the Doctor exchange grins as she moves away. In a restroom, Swales makes coffee and Martha is on the phone. She and Tish discuss the party again and try to find a way for Annalise not to come. Tish says she will drop by for lunch and Martha asks in this weather as it is raining at the hospital but not where Tish is. Tish turns the corner and sees a big black cloud over the hospital.

"Well I'm pretty sure that's not normal." Rose mutters.

"No kidding." Donna agrees.

"It's like a kid's cartoon." Jack grins.

Tish tries to tell Martha it's only raining over the hospital but she keeps drawing the conversation back to the party. She sees the Doctor walk past wearing a dressing gown. Swales and Tish both mention the rain and Martha asks why everyone is so fussed until they point out the rain is going upwards.

"That's cool." Mickey laughs. "Backwards rain."

There's a big thunder roll and lightning flash, and the building tilts from side to side a lot. Finally it stops. Martha asks what the hell that was. Swales asks if she is ok and Martha agrees. They realise it is nighttime when it was lunchtime a minute ago. Martha looks out the window and states it is not night, they are on the moon. Out the window you can see Earth.

"Wicked." Rose grins. "And the ride was almost as bumpy as a TARDIS landing."

"OI! I'm not thaaaaat bad." Ten protests.

"Close though." Sarah-Jane laughs.

Staff and patients stare out of the windows. The electricity still works as people switch lights on. Then the panic really sets in. Back on Earth, Tish hurries down the street and is stopped by a policeman. However she can see a giant crater where the hospital had been.

"Why would aliens want to kidnap a hospital?" Donna frowns.

"And to the moon of all places?" Mickey points out.

Tish tries to talk to Martha with her phone and walks away past the Tardis parked in a small green space.

"Oh great. You don't even have the TARDIS." Rose sighs.

"Parking is a bit difficult in a hospital." Ten points out.

"You couldn't find a storage cupboard?" Donna asks. He shakes his head.

Hysteria is in control. Martha hurries down a corridor. She stops in a room to look out the window and then goes back out down the corridor. Florence tries to ask a question but Martha brushes her off as she goes into the Orthopedic ward and tries to get everyone back to bed. The Doctor peeks out from behind his curtain and disappears again. Martha looks out another window before announcing it's real.

"That's one heck of a view." Jack whistles.

"The Earth really is beautiful." Rose agrees.

Martha reaches to open the window. Swales stops her saying they will lose air.

"I very much doubt those windows are all airtight. If you were going to lose air you would have done it already." Jack states.

"So what, the aliens who kidnapped them also gave them air? Very thoughtful."

"Means they want them alive." Sarah-Jane points out.

Martha points out they if they were going to lose air they would have already.

Jack and Martha grin at each other.

She asks how come. The Doctor has got dressed behind his curtain. He pulls the curtain back saying that is a very good point. He asks her name and she tells him it is Martha. He remembers her last name is Jones. He asks how they are still breathing. Swales states they can't be. The Doctor says they obviously are so don't waste his time.

"Rude." Rose pokes Ten.

"It was a stupid thing to say." Nine defends his future self.

"Yes, I can only imagine how rude you would have been in that body. She's scared." Rose frowns at him.

"Yes but that's what I have you for." Nine grins. "I get to be rude and you be all polite and make them feel better." Rose laughs.

The Doctor asks if there is a balcony or veranda on the floor and she says there is one. He asks if she fancies going out and she agrees. He states they might die and she retorts they might not.

"I definitely see why he wanted you to go with him." Donna tells Martha.

The Doctor says good and for her to come on. He points to Swales and says not her, she would just hold them up.

Rose pokes Ten in the side. He grimaces and sticks his tongue out at her.

The Doctor and Martha head to the patient's lounge. They open the glass doors and step out. Each takes a deep breath. Martha asks how it works that they have air and he tells her to just be glad it does. She says she has a party tonight and her mother is going to be before she trails of. He asks if she is ok and she agrees.

"Wow, you even noticed she was upset and everything." Sarah-Jane teases lightly.

"You're all so mean to me." Ten grumbles. Rose pats his arm while trying not to laugh at his expression.

He asks if she wants to go back in and she says no way. She states they could die any minute but it is beautiful. He asks if she really things so and Martha points out how many people want to go to the moon and there they are. He adds they are standing in Earthlight.

"Not many people can say that in that time." Jack smiles.

Martha asks what he things happened but he just asks her the same question. She says it has to be extraterrestrial. She adds it would have seemed mad a few years ago but with Christmas and the Cybermen things. She adds she had a cousin who never came back from Canary Wharf.

"I'm glad I found out what happened to her." Martha states softly.

"Yeah, at least you got some closure." Mickey agrees, squeezing her shoulders.

The Doctor grows a little sad and he says sorry. He adds he was in the battle. Martha promises to find a way out. He tells her his name isn't Smith but the Doctor. She says she will be soon hopefully before asking if it is Doctor Smith. He repeats it is just the Doctor and she says people have to earn that title. He states he had better get started then.

"So, do you think I earned it then?" Ten smirks at Martha, stepping in before his Ninth self could open his mouth. He looked far less impressed with Martha's statement.

"I should think so. Eventually." She teases back.

He says there must be some sort of, before trailing off and throwing something off the balcony. It bounces off the forcefield. He finishes that there is a forcefield keeping the air in. Martha realises that it is like a bubble so the air in their is the only air they get. She asks what happens when the air runs out.

"Well, what happens when you usually run out of air?" Nine asks her in his best, 'you're a stupid ape' tone of voice. He did not appreciate being told by this human that he had to earn his name as if it were the same as the stupid Earth title. Rose gave him a look that clearly said to behave so he huffed and settled for glaring at the screen. Martha didn't reply to the question, a little intimidated by the glare.

The Doctor asks how many people are in the hospital. Martha guesses a thousand and he states one thousand people suffocating. She asks why anyone would do that.

"Plenty of reasons." Jack shrugs.

There is a noise and the Doctor looks up, saying she can ask them herself. Three massive columnar spaceships pass overhead, then land nearby. Columns of marching beings come stomping out. Martha states they are real, proper aliens.

"You've been with one of those for a while." Jack laughs.

"Yeah but he seems so human." Martha shrugs.

"Except the two hearts." Sarah-Jane reminds her.

"A lot had happened since then. She had probably forgotten that." Mickey points out.

The Doctor looks grim as he states they are Judoon.

"Oh crap. What did you do doc?" Jack asks with a nervous laugh.

"Who are the Judoon?" Rose asks.

"They call themselves police but it's more like thugs for hire." Jack explains.

"Why take the hospital to the moon though?" Donna questions.

"They have no authority over Earth." Ten tells her. "And it wasn't me they were looking for." He adds, looking over at Jack.

Stoker is watching through binoculars. Florence comes into his office and asks if he can help her. He turns around and says they are a bit beyond aspirin. He is at a loss for her name so she tells him it is Miss Finnegan. He goes on about how he planned to retire soon and now he will never see his daughter again. Florence just says she needs help.

"So they are after her then?" Rose guesses.

"Judoon don't come after humans." Jack frowns.

He protests he can't do anything and she disagrees. The two motorbike men enter. Stoker asks what they want and Florence says they are her boys as she prefers not to get her hands dirty. She snaps her fingers and the men take hold of Stoker. She ignores his protests and continues that she was only salt deficient because she is very good at absorbing it. So she needs blood.

"She's a plasmavore!" Nine gasps.

"What's that when it's at home?" Donna asks.

"I'm sure I explain it to Martha at some point." Ten gestures to the screen. He really just wants to get through this episode. He already regrets agreeing to watch today and knows that all he has to do is say the word and everyone will let him take a break. However, that would just be delaying the inevitable, which is his usual preference but hasn't seemed to get him anywhere so far.

She says she is a survivor, adding she even brought a straw. She takes one out of her handbag. Florence advances and Stoker screams.

Martha covers her mouth with her hands. She knew he hadn't survived but to see it was something else. Besides, she had been very fond of her teacher even if he was a bit impatient.

The aliens march towards the hospital. They pass through the forcefield and into the hospital. The people there scream and run, hiding behind the chairs in the waiting area. The leader takes off his helmet to reveal that he is - a two horned rhinoceros. He speaks in his own language. The other Judoon draw their weapons.

"Woah, are they just going to shoot everyone?" Rose asks anxiously.

"That's not a gun. They use it to assimilate languages." Nine reassures her.

Morgenstern states they welcome them in peace. The Judoon pushes him against the wall and shines a blue light in his mouth. He begs for them not to hurt him. The Judoon plays a recording of Morgenstern on his blue light device, then plugs it into his armour. It states language assimilated and designates it Earth English.

"Well that was easy enough. I could do with one of them." Rose laughs.

"There are plenty of planets that would be offended by that." Ten grins.

"And naturally you would forget which ones those are." Sarah-Jane teases. "Probably causing Rose to be arrested."

"It's a rubbish week if we aren't arrested at least twice." Nine smirks. "I mean, Jack was only around a couple of months and we had an established breakout routine."

He shines a blue light onto Morgenstern's forehead. After a few seconds he designates him human. He marks a cross on Morgenstern's right hand. The process is repeated on all the people by the other Judoon. The Doctor and Martha watch it all from above. The Doctor comments on the little shop.

"Really?" Donna rolls her eyes. "At this rate you'll tell me you've got a little shop somewhere on the TARDIS."

"No but that's an excellent idea." Ten looks thoughtful.

"Now look what you've done." Jack nudges Donna and grins.

Martha asks what Judoon are and the Doctor explains. When she asks why they were brought to the moon he says it is neutral territory and the backwards rain was an H2O scoop.

"Cool." Jack whistles.

Martha asks if they are under arrest for trespassing on the moon.

"You can't exactly be trespassing on the moon if they brought you there. Also, if that were the case you'd have been arrested decades ago." Nine rolls his eyes. Mickey glares at him which he completely ignores.

The Doctor tells her no but he likes that thinking.

"You're not a totally hopeless cause then." Rose laughs. "Some room for improvement on the rudeness front." She eyes Nine who looks unrepentant and simply smirks at her.

He states they are making a catalogue which is bad for him. Martha asks why. He simply raises an eyebrow at her and she tells him to stop looking at her like that. They leave. The lead Judoon tells the others to search other floors. Morgenstern goes with him trying to tell everyone it is alright.

"He's a brave one." Jack smiles.

"Yeah, he's really nice too." Martha nods.

A man smashes a jug over the head of a Judoon.

Both Doctors and Jack all wince.

"I'm guessing that wasn't a good idea." Donna mutters.

"Judoon punishment for assault is execution." Jack whispers to her.

The Judoon charges him with physical assault, gives the guilty verdict and states that the sentence is execution. The Judoon kills the man with a painful heat ray. The remains are just a pile of carbon.

"Oh god. That poor man." Rose whispers sadly.

Morgenstern says he didn't have to do that. The Judoon replied that justice is swift. Martha walks into an office and the Doctor is using his sonic screwdriver on a computer. She states they have reached the third floor and asks what the screwdriver is. He tells her and she thinks he is joking. He assures her it is indeed a sonic screwdriver and she sarcastically asks if he has a laser spanner.

"I did actually." Nine smirks.

"Where did it go then?" Jack asks.

"Emily Pankhurst stole it and I never got around to making another one." Ten shrugs. "My sonic is enough."

The Doctor says the computer has been locked down. Then he starts rambling about how he wasn't looking for trouble, he was just wandering past.

"That's pretty much how it always happens." Rose laughs. "Or you landed in the wrong place."

Martha asks what they were looking for and he says something that looks human but isn't. She skeptically asks if he means like him. He agrees like him but not him.

"Humans look like Time Lords, not the other way around." Nine pouts.

"Of course, your far superior race came first." Donna mockingly agrees.

She asks if they have a photo and he responds that it might be a shapechanger. She asks if they can't just leave it for the Judoon to find.

"No, if they can't find it they may just declare the hospital guilty of harbouring a fugitive. Execute everyone and they can be sure they got it." Jack tells her.

"Besides, as a plasmavore, if it drinks human blood it will show up as a human on the scans." Nine adds.

"It would also mean sitting back and doing nothing. The Doctor isn't very good at that." Sarah-Jane laughs.

He explains what will happen if they accuse the hospital of harbouring a fugitive. He keeps trying the computer before declaring the Judoon completely thick as they wiped all records. Martha asks what they are looking for and he guesses anyone admitted within a week with odd symptoms.

"That doesn't narrow it down too much." Rose sighs.

She tells him to keep working while she asks Mr Stoker. She goes into his office. She sees a pair of feet sticking out from behind the desk, the motorcycle men, then Florence stands up still sucking on her straw. Martha runs. Florence orders the men to kill her. Martha runs into the Doctor. He announces he restored the backup and Martha declares she found her. The Doctor asks she did what when the motorcycle men break down Stoker's office door. He takes Martha's hand and yells run.

"Nothing like a nice jog." Jack laughs.

"And this was nothing like a nice jog." Martha tells him firmly.

They head down the stairs, but meet Judoon coming off and divert onto another floor, followed by a motorcycle man. They run into the radiology room and the Doctor sonics the door lock. Then they get behind the radiation screen. He says that she will need to press the button on his signal. Martha protests she doesn't know which one so he tells her to find out.

"Not that easy when you're panicking and have no idea how to use the machine." Mickey tells him.

"There's usually a big colourful on button." Ten shrugs.

The Doctor starts messing with the x-ray machine while Martha gets the Operator's Manual from the shelf and starts reading. The man outside is battering the door off its hinges. It gets in and the Doctor points the x-ray machine at it. He yells now and Martha presses on a big yellow button.

"See." Ten grins.

The leather-clad man gets a massive dose of radiation, and falls face down. Martha turns the machine off and asks what he did. He explains he increased the radiation and killed it. Martha asks if that will kill him. The Doctor tells her he played with roentgen radiation in nursery.

"Really?" Rose asks.

"Yeah, itches on the way out of the body but no harm or anything." Nine assures her.

He says it is safe for her to come out. He expels the radiation into his shoe, dancing about like a maniac while doing so. Eventually he dumps his shoe into the disposal bin.

Everyone laughs. "You're mental." Rose tells him.

"You wouldn't have it any other way." Ten smirks at her.

"True." She agrees with an easy smile.

Martha states he is completely mad. The Doctor agrees he looks daft with one shoe and dumps the other one in the bin too.

"I don't think that's what she meant." Jack sniggers.

She asks what it is and he explains they are just basic slabs, leather all the way through. He stands up and Martha begins to explain about Florence. The Doctor had left his screwdriver in the x-ray machine. It is totally fried.

"My poor screwdriver." Nine moans.

"Can't you make another one?" Donna asks.

"Well, yes, but I love my sonic." Nine grumbles, pouting at Ten. "And, seeing as the TARDIS is still on Earth the sonic would have been useful to have."

"Needs must." Ten shrugs.

He isn't paying attention to Martha until she finally calls him Doctor. He throws the screwdriver away.

Nine winces.

He points out she called him Doctor. Martha dismisses this and repeats that Miss Finnegan is the alien and she was drinking Mr Stoker's blood. He realises what she is. Florence walks out of the office, wiping the corners of her mouth. She stands calmly while she is catalogued as human. The Doctor states they need to find her and show the Judoon. They run into the corridor.

"If she's been catalogued already they won't scan her again. Judoon are a bit too methodical." Jack frowns.

"We just need to borrow one of their scanners and scan her in front of them." Nine suggests.

"How long does it take for her biology to change back from mimicking human?" Sarah-Jane asks.

"Too long." Jack tells her grimly.

Florence smiles at the cross on her hand. The Doctor and Martha hide by the water dispenser as the other Slab walks down the corridor. He states that slabs always travel in pairs. Martha asks if he has backup or a partner. He gets frustrated that she is asking personal questions. She says she still isn't convinced he is an alien. They walk into a Judoon and the Doctor gets scanned.

"You just had to jinx it." Mickey tells her teasingly.

"At least you got your proof." Jack snickers.

"Yeah that made me feel loads better." Martha tells him sarcastically. "I was definitely running around with an alien, looking for a different alien to stop a whole hospital being killed by another kind of alien."

"Typical day." Nine shrugs.

She states he really is and he says 'and again'. They run, and get round the corner before the Judoon fires its weapon. The Doctor and Martha run up the stairs. Upstairs, people are starting to slump to the floor. The Doctor says they have already done this floor. The Judoon are logical and a bit thick so shouldn't check the floor again. Swales is giving oxygen to a patient.

"Time is running out." Donna winces.

"Isn't it always." Ten grimaces, eyes flickering to Rose.

Martha crouches down with Swales, asking how much oxygen they have and she replied not enough for everyone. The Doctor asks how Martha is and she replies that she is running on adrenaline.

"That won't keep you going for too long." Sarah-Jane tells her. Martha nods.

He tells her welcome to his world. She asks about the Judoon but he tells her it won't slow them down. They head to Mr Stoker's office. Martha states she was here. The body is very white.

Martha puts her face in Mickey's shoulder, no desire to see his body again.

The Doctor crouches by the body and declares she drained him dry. Martha asks what she is doing on Earth and he says she is on the run. He realises she is still not safe as the Judoon could execute them all.

"Unless she's counting on them to find you?" Donna suggests with no real hope.

"She wouldn't know I'm an alien." Ten reminds her. "No, she would have to assume everyone there is human."

He makes to leave and Martha tells him to wait a minute. She closes Stoker's eyes. They head out into the corridor and he tries to think. He spots the sign for MRI and announces she is as clever as him, before adding almost.

"Oh good. I was worried for a second. Not like you to think anything is as clever as you are." Rose laughs.

"She was definitely clever and very very good. But I'm better." Ten grins at her.

"Naturally." Rose agrees with only a tiny bit of sarcasm.

The Judoon arrive. The Doctor tells Martha to hold them up. She asks how and he asks her to forgive him. He explains it could save a thousand lives and means nothing. He then kisses her before running away.

Jack whistles appreciatively. Then pouts. "Honestly, and you still say I need to buy you a drink. You're giving them away."

"It was a genetic transfer." Ten tells him through gritted teeth. That had been one of his worst ideas. Maybe his younger self had the right idea that being a pretty boy was a bad thing. He was willing to bet Martha would not have been anywhere near as attracted to his former self if he had tried the same thing. 'Humans' he grumbles mentally.

"I'm all up for transfering genetics." Jack winks. Ten rolls his eyes and looks down at Rose who is frowning.

"If I could have thought of any other options I would have done but we had no time and it was the only way she would show up as human with non human bits at the same time." He whispers to her. She nods stiffly. It did not make it any easier to watch him kissing someone else when they never even got one proper kiss in which she wasn't dying or possessed.

Watching how he reassured Rose and only seemed concerned about her reaction really made it hit home for Martha that he genuinely felt nothing from that kiss, genetic transfer, whatever. For a while she had thought he was simply playing hard to get or something. It hurt to see exactly how non existent her chances with him were.

Martha grins for a few seconds before asking if that was nothing. In the MRI room there are flashes of light going on inside the room. The Doctor enters. The scanner itself has energy dancing all over it, and Florence is in the control booth, working. He starts babbling about space rhinos and gets her attention.

"Well seems that gob is good for something. She'll eat you just to shut you up." Jack rolls his eyes having guessed what the Doctor plans to do. He isn't sure how he's alive after that but figures he will find out.

She calls out to hold him. The Slab comes out from behind the door and grabs the Doctor's arms. In the corridor the Judoon keep marching. Martha tells them she knows who they are looking for. The lead Judoon scans her and declares human before saying non human traits suspected. He orders a full scan, asking what she is.

"I'm going to assume they won't kill her for having non human traits?" Sarah-Jane asks lightly.

"Na, a full scan will show her as human." Ten shrugs.

In the MRI room the Doctor asks if the machine is supposed to be making that noise and she states he wouldn't understand. He keeps her talking, feigning ignorance, until she reveals her plan to fry half of Earth and escape in the Judoon ships.

"Oh my god." Rose gasps as the whole room look horrified.

"But she has no reason to fry Earth. Fry the moon and all the Judoon die anyway leaving her the ships." Jack points out furiously.

"She simply doesn't care." Nine spits.

The Doctor says she is talking like she is some kind of alien and she agrees. He asks if she is joking and she assures him she is not.

"Wow, I've never seen acting this good from you." Rose laughs, trying to lift the mood a little.

"Yeah, acting stupid seems to agree with you." Donna adds with a snigger.

"Oi!" Ten pouts.

She tells him it is the perfect hiding place. Blood banks for food and equipment to arm herself when the police come. He asks if the rhinos are looking for her and she announces she is hidden. The Doctor states that must be why they are increasing their scans.

"Oh you're not?" Rose cries. "She'll kill you!"

"Na." Ten tells her calmly. "I'll be fine."

"Nearly weren't." Martha mutters under her breath. Mickey squeezes her gently having been the only one to hear her.

She turns round and asks what. He tells her they are increasing scans up to setting two and she states she must assimilate again. When she tells him she needs to appear human he offers for her to come home and meet the wife.

"Sure, now you've got a wife. When I'm around it was 'timorous beastie' or 'concubine'." Rose grumbles playfully.

"It was timorous beastie one time." Ten complains. "Just one!" Rose gives him a tongue touched grin and he can't help but grin back.

"I'm sure plenty of people thought you were his wife." Jack assures her. She stares at him. "Well you two act coupley all the time. There must be loads of planets where they way you two act is considered married."

"There is." Ten grins.

"You knew this?" Rose raises an eyebrow at him. He nods. She rolls her eyes. "Now he tells me."

She digs her straw out and he offers milkshakes instead. She tells the slab to steady him. The Slab forces the Doctor to his knees and turns his head so Florence has a clear shot at his jugular with her straw. She tells him it will hurt but the dead don't tend to remember.

"Not comforting." Martha shudders.

She sticks her straw into his vein, and sucks.

"Oh!" Rose turns and hugs Ten, burying her face in his neck.

Martha gets a cross on her hand. Judoon confirms her as human and gives her a booklet, telling her it's for compensation. She follows them as they march off. Florence is sucking away when the Judoon enter. The Slab drops the Doctor and Florence hides her straw in her handbag. She tells them he died of fright and the Judoon confirm he is dead.

"What?" Everyone except Martha and Ten exclaim.

"How can you be…" Sarah-Jane stares at him in horror, unable to finish the sentence.

"You didn't even regenerate?" Donna frowns. Ten just gestures at the screen.

Martha runs in. She claims he can't be dead but she is held back. The Judoon announces the case is closed. Martha tries to protest that she killed the Doctor but they announce they have no jurisdiction over human crimes. Martha cries that she isn't human. She realises that she drank the Doctor's blood and grabs a scanner. Florence isn't concerned until the Judoon states she is non human.

"Well done, Martha." Jack lets out a low breath.

"Quick thinking. Good job they scanned him in front of you earlier or you'd have thought he was human too." Mickey smiles at her.

The Judoon tells the rest to confirm and all the scanners agree she is a plasmavore. Martha states the Doctor gave his life so they would find her. Florence is confirmed to have killed a child princess. Dropping all pretense she agrees the girl deserved it. She tells her slab to stop them. The Judoon fry the slab easily. Florence dashes behind the screen and plugs in the MRI scanner. The Magnetic Overload sign comes on. She cries they will burn with her. The four Judoon all fire and incinerate Florence.

"Great, now they are going to just leave." Jack growls in frustration.

"They will just let it blow up?" Donna asks in horror.

"They have done their job, they no longer care." Ten tells her gently.

"That's so wrong!" Rose cries, voice muffled by Ten's jacket.

Martha drops down by the Doctor, saying she must have done something. The Judoon scans the MRI machine. It detects something lethal and Martha yells for him to do something. He announces their jurisdiction has ended and he tells all units to withdraw. The Judoon clomp their way back to their spaceships.

"They'll put the hospital back right?" Sarah-Jane asks.

"Yes but then the machine will fry the whole Earth instead of just half." Mickey reminds her.

Morgenstern is on the floor, he tries to ask them about the air as they are running out but he is ignored. Martha comes out into the corridor and yells they can't just go. The machine will explode and it's their fault. She is also ignored. She runs back inside and starts performing CPR on the Doctor. A few rounds in she remembers he has two hearts and does it on both but she is running out of air too.

"You're fantastic." Mickey tells her earnestly.

Martha starts to gasp for breath. She takes a last deep lungful and gives it to the Doctor. He wakes and she collapses. She manages to tell him she did something to the scanner.

"You just saved the world Martha Jones." Ten smiles at her.

"Thank goodness." Rose breathes, finally looking up again.

Energy is playing all over the hospital. The Doctor crawls to the scanner controls then realises he doesn't have a sonic screwdriver any more.

"Just fantastic." Nine groans.

"Can't you just unplug it?" Jack asks.

"Excuse me for taking a second. I was dead a minute ago." Ten reminds him, grinning slightly.

He pulls apart the cables that Florence had plugged together and the scanner turns off, then carries Martha down the corridor. The Judoon spaceships take off as the oxygen levels fall to zero. He carries Martha to the window. He pleads for the Judoon to reverse it. It starts to rain.

"Brilliant." Mickey says. The whole room breathes a sigh of relief. Another adventure that came quite a bit too close for comfort.

He tells the unconscious Martha it is raining on the moon. A crash of thunder and big flash, and the hospital is back where it should be.

"That seems a lot smoother than the journey up." Donna points out.

Later, the people are being taken to other hospitals. Martha is sitting in the back of an ambulance. Morgenstern is giving his version to a policeman. He makes it sound more impressive than it was.

Martha smiles at this.

Tish runs up the Martha and they hug. She keeps babbling and Martha spots the Doctor heading back to the TARDIS. When she looks back it has gone. She looks at the spot sadly. Later, after a shower, Martha is getting ready for Leo's party. The story is still on the news and Morgenstern in talking again. He mentions Mr Saxon.

Ten stiffens again. It was almost like Bad Wolf all over again. Little drops every now and again only this was much worse than Bad Wolf.

Annalise storms out of the party saying she isn't staying there to be insulted. Clive and Francine come out and continue arguing. They drag Martha into it and she tells her mum to leave it. Tish and Leo join in until eventually Clive goes after Annalise with Leo following. Francine storms off and Tish runs after her leaving Martha alone.

"Oh my god." Martha buries her face in her hands. Just because she had come to appreciate her family all the more after watching this past week or so did not mean they no longer drove her absolutely insane.

Then Martha sees the Doctor standing on the corner. He backs away and she follows. He stands next to the TARDIS. She states she went to the moon and he comments it was a bit more peaceful than down here.

"That's not difficult." Martha sighs.

She says he never told her who he was.

"I did too." Ten protests.

He tells her again he is the Doctor. She asks what species and he tells her Time Lord. She sarcastically says not at all pompous.

"You haven't seen anything yet." Donna laughs.

He says he thought she might fancy a trip as she saved his life. She says she can't as she has exams and things to do. He tells her it can travel in time as well. She doesn't believe him. The Doctor goes into the Tardis and it dematerialises. Martha reaches into the space where it had been. Then it rematerialises again and the Doctor comes out holding his tie in his hand. She asks why he didn't warn her not to go into work.

"Then you wouldn't have been there to save my life." Ten shrugs. "Bad idea to mess with time like that."

"You love bad ideas." Rose reminds him.

"I try not to go for ones that kill me twice in one day." He jokes.

He tells her crossing established events is forbidden except for cheap tricks. He explains his ship is called the TARDIS and what that stands for. She notes it is made of wood and a bit small. He tells her to have a look inside. She does the usual disbelief and checks in and out.

All the companions laugh having done this themselves, Jack being the only exception.

As she comes back in saying it is bigger on the inside, he mouths it along with her.

They all laugh again.

He comments he hadn't noticed.

"I know you're a bit unobservant but even you should have noticed that." Donna tells him with a straight face.

He shuts the door. Martha asks about crew and he says it is just him. He adds that sometimes he has guests, mumbling about his friend Rose and they were together.

"And there was me thinking I was single." Rose sticks her tongue out at him.

"Nope, you're all mine." Nine tells her sternly, pulling her away from Ten and into a hug. Rose hugs him back and then shifts so that she is leaning into Nine's side and puts her legs across Ten's lap. Ten glares at her feigning outrage but then reaches for her hand and twines their fingers together.

Martha asks where Rose is now and he assures her that she is with her family and happy.

"I doubt that." Rose mumbles.

He adds that Martha is not replacing Rose. Martha defends that she never said she was. He sternly tells her she is going for one trip to say thank you and then back home. Martha tells him he was the one who kissed her.

"He's also the one who said it meant nothing to him." Jack reminds her lightly. He can see exactly why she thought he would be interested, however it would seem she didn't get the hint to back off until they got here. Mickey seemed to be good for her in that respect, they were good for each other, Jack thought.

He states that was a genetic transfer. She adds that if he will wear a tight suit and he tells her 'don't'. Not taking any notice, she continues that he travelled across the universe to ask her on a date.

"No I didn't, don't be ridiculous." Nine frowns at her. "At best I moved a couple of hours forwards, didn't even leave Earth. Nor did I ask you on a date." He can tell that watching his future self travelling with this woman is going to try his patience. He tells himself he will put up with it as long as it doesn't hurt Rose.

He warns her again to stop it. Martha suddenly tells him she isn't interested and only goes for humans.

"Liar." Donna mutters quietly so only Jack can hear her. "Really don't get what they all see in such a skinny strip of bones anyway." She adds a little louder.

"Oi!" Ten pouts in her direction.

He raises an eyebrow but then says good and gets the TARDIS ready. He asks if she is ready and she replies no. The TARDIS dematerialises with a big jolt. They hand on for dear life. She states it's a bit bumpy. He welcomes her aboard and she says it is her pleasure. Then the screen goes black.

"I see calling him Doctor didn't stick long." Jack laughs. "Everybody ready for another one?" They all nod. People take a quick toilet break and then get ready for more.
