[November 2nd: Two Weeks Later]
Elijah pulled his phone from his pocket and scrolled through his emails on the apartments that him and Klaus just bought. One of the things in the modern century was having to make money. While he could just go around stealing it and no one would be the wiser, he was far more honorable and this wasn't the dark ages anymore. He walked to his black Tesla from the Grill. He came here to meet a real estate agent on buying another property in Mystic Falls. Bella was inside with her friends from school. He kept his distance during the day and around others. He didn't want the added confusion for the public if they saw him being intimate with her in any way. It killed him to not be able to touch her in public, but he would be honorable. It was the start of November so that meant the days were shorter the closer it got to winter. He went to open the door on the Tesla, when he felt a hand touch his. He looked up from his phone and stared back into the dark, doe brown eyes of Elena. Or in the very least, it looked like Elena, but Elijah knew better instantly. This girl was Katherine Pierce.
"Why are you here. Did you forget that Klaus wants you dead?" Elijah asked, taking his hand from the car door and taking a slight step back. He stood, his hands in his pockets now. It was how he always stood. It made him look more intimidating if you asked anyone other than Klaus.
Katherine's lips turned up in a playful smile. Her hair was board straight. She was trying to infiltrate without issue. Elena was her doppleganger afterall. It seemed that Elijah couldn't be tricked. She even stole clothes from Elena's house. Jenna wasn't hard to trick to let her inside the house. "You know it's me."
"Of course, I know you." Elijah said and his smartwatch vibrated and he glanced at it to see the message from Klaus. He was headed to the Grill from Mckinney and was complaining about having to use cars. "I am a busy man and you have about twenty minutes before Klaus is here and he rips out your heart. So I suggest you disappear and never come back." He warned.
Katherine stepped closer, inhaling Elijah's scent. "You're always the most honorable brother. Why don't you live a little? What if I wanted to stay… in Mystic Falls. Maybe we could… enjoy each other like old times. I'm sure you can convince your brother to let me live." She purred.
Elijah raised a brow. "My days of convincing Klaus what's best for him are over. He's capable of convincing himself of what needs to be done. The old days are old Katherine. That was four hundred years ago. I am not some-"
Katherine planted her lips against Elijah's cutting him off.
Stefan walked outside to see if Elena had pulled up yet since everyone was already there and he had football practice and she was supposed to be dropping Jeremy off at home before coming by the Grill. He saw Elena kissing Elijah and he felt something in him break. He turned away, not believing what he was seeing. He didn't want to believe what he just saw, but it was clear. Elena was locking lips with Elijah. He walked back inside the Grill, not knowing what to do.
Elijah pushed Katherine back, growling at her. "You do not get to do that!" He actually sounded scary. It physically hurt him when Katherine kissed him and he knew it was because of the vampire mate bond with Bella. He felt like he was slipping into a rage and Katherine must have seen the anger roll over him because she disappeared, running away. His phone rang forcing Elijah's attention away from Katherine and he answered. "Elijah." He answered. He paused a moment and nodded. "Okay. I'll wire the money in the morning." He said and then he touched the handle on the Tesla and opened the door. He wanted to walk back inside the Grille just to see Bella's face, but he forced himself not to. He was hurting right now and he didn't want Bella to see him like that.
Bella saw Stefan when he came back inside. He seemed a little out of it and that made her worry. She got up from the table while Tyler was talking about the football game last Friday. Caroline was so enthralled with Tyler and everyone saw how his playboy tendencies bled through, but Caroline was just so naïve to it. But no one would miss Bella when she got up from the table. She went over to Stefan. "Hey. What's up?"
Stefan hadn't heard Bella, he was in his own mind right now. How could Elena betray him like that? How could she betray Bella like that? How could Elijah betray Bella? He felt angry and anxious all at the same time and he didn't know what to do other than rip something apart.
Bella lay a hand on Stefan's shoulder and flashes of memory went through Bella. They were the memories of Stefan and what just happened with Elena and Elijah. She gasped, pulling her hand back.
Stefan blinked in confusion, seeing Bella's face and the shocked look and realized that she saw what was going on in his head. "Bella, wait. I-"
Bella feels a little upset, her heart starting to race as the image of Elena and Elijah kissing ran through her mind on repeat. But in the middle of it running through her head she saw Elena walk through the door, wearing different clothes. "Stefan… I… I don't think that was Elena kissing Elijah." She murmured quietly. She was trying to rationalize things now instead of jumping to conclusions. The old Bella would have crumbled, but she was trying to hold herself together. Especially for those around her. She wanted to be stronger.
Stefan glanced up and saw Elena and then back at Bella. "I don't… I don't understand, how are you seeing what's in my head?"
"I don't know. I just know that Elena is wearing something different now. There's no way she changed in the last five minutes." Bella explained.
Stefan frowned, the crease in his forehead prominent as he thought about it. "Bella, what if-"
"I'm not wrong. Uncle Stefan." Bella murmured. "Trust me."
Stefan's heart was hurting. What he thought he saw was Elena and Elijah kissing.
"I know you're hurting. I am too. But I'm positive it wasn't Elena. It was Katherine. Elena's a doppleganger right?" Bella brought Stefan's focus back to her.
Stefan frowned. "How do you know about Katherine?"
"I just… I just do. I know she was a bad… person and she's alive. Which means she's in Mystic Falls and she's screwing with your head. She has to be planning something and I'm going to figure that part out, but right now… Elena is here. She wasn't the one that kissed Elijah. I can promise you that." Bella reassured.
Stefan blew out a breath and nodded. "Okay. Yeah… you're right. Elena wouldn't do that." He paused. "But Elijah… he-"
"I know." Bella felt her heart squeeze in her chest. "I know." She swallowed. "I'll be okay. Promise." She didn't know if she would be okay. She just felt so uneasy, but she didn't want to confront Elijah. Not just yet.
[The Next Day]
Bella managed to make it through dinner with Klaus sitting with her with all her friends. When Klaus asked her what was wrong, she just told him she wasn't feeling well and was going home to the boarding house to rest. Klaus was worried about her, but he agreed. She needed to rest, so he let her drive home to the boarding house. She stayed there mostly instead of the Lockwood estate. She felt more at home at the boarding house than with the Lockwoods oddly. Richard didn't take it personally and neither did Carol. Renee spent more time with Damon at the boarding house as well. Bella liked seeing her mom smile and be happy, she was happy that Damon made her smile like that. They were her parents afterall. School was a drag for her. She knew that this was her last year of high school and that she should be more excited about it being senior year, but she really just didn't care about it. She felt like there was so much more out there in the world that was more important than graduation. But she was there, making an effort.
By the time third period came around, Bella was getting a headache. It was odd for her to have a headache, but she tried to push through the headache. She was in English Literature class when she started hearing thoughts of her classmates around her. It startled her at first which caused people to look at her, so she sunk down in her seat a little and tried to look away. She closed her eyes and the voices got more intense. She didn't know why it was happening. She bounced her leg, her anxiety making it's appearance now. It was getting so loud and confusing that she had enough. She stood abruptly and left the classroom in a hurry like she was a panicked cat trapped in a room. She beelined for the closest bathroom and shut herself in a stall. She sat on the toilet and drew her feet up, hugging her knees as she waited for the quiet.
A few moments later she heard the bathroom door open and shut. Then the lock turned and she heard footsteps. She opened her eyes and saw feet stopped outside the stall she was in.
"Bella." The soft voice of Bonnie Bennett sounded.
Bonnie was friendly and had a pretty smile. Her dark crinkle curls were like ringlets that brushed her shoulders. The light brown was contrast to her mocha skin and her eyes were hazel and blue, an unusual color that Bella had found interesting the first time she met Bonnie.
"B… Bonnie?" Bella set her feet down on the floor and opened the stall and there was Bonnie, standing there. She couldn't hear Bonnie's thoughts and that was shocking to her. "I can't… hear your thoughts." She murmured it outloud.
Bonnie smiled sweetly and nodded. "I'm a witch… that's why." She said softly. "You were… hearing everyone's thoughts at one time. You're not transitioning into a vampire… right?"
"No… um. My dad is a vampire… my mom is a human." Bella said and swallowed. "I-I-I'm just human though." Bella pointed out. She understood that witches didn't particularly care for vampires.
Bonnie nodded. "But you're hearing thoughts?" She asked and Bella nodded. "Hmm. Do you know more about how you were able to be conceived?"
"Um. My mom said it's because of magic."
Bonnie was understanding then. "Okay. Maybe that's what's going on." She murmured. "I locked the door. No one is going to come to this bathroom. Maybe let's sit over here in the floor for a while? Talk about some stuff." She coaxed.
Bella nodded then got off the toilet and followed Bonnie to sit down in the corner by the sinks. "How did you know I was… hearing things?"
"You looked scared and startled. I wanted to check on you." Bonnie said. "You haven't been in Mystic Falls that long. You hang out with Caroline and Elena."
"Elena more than Caroline. Caroline is all about my cousin Tyler at the moment." Bella said and sighed.
Bonnie knew that Tyler and Bella were cousins. It was shocking to learn that Tyler had any cousins or anything like that because he was always the only child. "Well. I can help a little with the voices. I'm not as strong as my grandmother, but I want to help." She offered.
"I would never ask you to push yourself to do something. I-I-I will be okay." Bella stuttered a little.
"It's fine. I want to do this. I know you don't know me well enough yet, but you can trust me." She said and finally Bella just nodded. Bonnie faced Bella more then brought her hands up and touched Bella's temples as she chanted something simple.
Bella felt her headache go away and it was literally magic. "Oh."
"Does it feel better?"
Bella was surprised that it worked so well. "Yes actually. I feel a lot better." She smiled at Bonnie. "Thank you."
Bonnie smiled back. "It's no problem. Want to skip fourth period and chill here? I put an out of order sign on the door. No one will bother us."
Bella liked Bonnie. She was different from Caroline and Elena in a lot of ways. She nodded. "Yeah. I think that'll be okay." She said and relaxed, her back against the tiled wall of the girls bathroom.
