A whole week went by. Caroline was adjusting to life as a vampire. Bonnie made a daylight ring for Caroline. That was a big talk. Bonnie had been in the friend group once before, but as high school went on, interests weren't as aligned. Neither of the girls held bad feelings for the other, so it was easy to fall back into a rhythm. Bella's mind reading capabilities seemed to be gone for the time being. Bonnie explained that it was likely because the magic was fragile that was used to somehow bind her vampire side. Bella wasn't going to complain about not being able to hear thoughts. She didn't like it when she could. It was too overwhelming.
The other big issue was Renee triggered her werewolf gene. It was hard at first. She was so angry with Mason, with Richard for keeping it from her and most importantly, she was upset that Caroline was a vampire now. Renee's memory was foggy. She didn't know what had happened. She didn't even remember calling Bella. The surgery that they did last week was completely healed now. Damon made sure to give her his blood to make sure she would heal. The full moon was supposed to be tonight so Renee would have to shift. Her and Mason were going to the old Lockwood cellars on the property to lock themselves up so they wouldn't hurt anyone.
Bella was worried about her mom and wished there was something that she could do to help her through this. But she was just Bella… she was useless.
"I found it." Damon announced. It broke Bella out of her little bubble and she looked over at Damon. He was flipping through a book.
"What did you find?"
"I found the book that will help me figure out how to tame the wolf for your mom. She's about to shift for the first time and that means a lot of pain. I think we can stop it."
Bella got to her feet then and went over to stand with Damon and look at the book. "How is that possible?" She asked and her eyes looked over the pages.
Il rituale richiede il sangue del combinato. (The ritual requires the blood of the combined.)
Bella frowned. "The ritual requires the blood of the combined? What is that supposed to mean?"
Damon frowned and looked at Bella. "Wait, you can read Italian?"
Bella nodded. "Yeah. I took two years of Italian in school in Forks. Freshman and Sophomore year."
"That saves me a trip to see a Mikaelson."
"Aren't you Italian?" Bella pointed out.
"Si. Doesn't mean I speak Italian." Damon said and handed her the book. "What else does it say?"
Quando la luna è appena prima del suo picco, il lupo deve ingerire il sangue del combinato prima di incontrare il suo destino.
Bella's eyes looked over the page and she frowned as she read. "It basically says right before the moon hits its peak, she needs to drink the combined blood before she meets her fate."
"Like death?" Damon queried.
Klaus walked into the parlor. He was used to just letting himself into the boarding house. "It means that she needs my blood. Right before the moon is high in the sky, she can ingest my blood and then she must die and she'll turn. She'll be a hybrid then." He said, holding a book that was different from Damon's but essentially was the same thing.
"How do you know?" Bella asked and took the book from Klaus. She looked over the writing in the book.
როდესაცმთვარეპიკამდეა, მგელმაუნდაგადაყლაპოსსისხლი, სანამბედსშეხვდება.
"I'm not sure… I know what I'm looking at."
"It's Georgian." Klaus said.
"What?" Bella was confused.
Klaus smiled and took the book gently. "It's a really old language my love. It says When the moon is right before its peak, the wolf must ingest the blood of the combined before meeting it's fate."
"That's what this book says. It's in Italian."
Klaus nodded. "I imagine it's by the same person, just different times. Sounds like a Finn thing to do." He said. "My oldest brother." He explained before Bella could ask.
Damon poured bourbon in two glasses one for him and Klaus. "So, you can help Renee?"
"Only if that's what she wants." Klaus said, taking the bourbon from Damon. "I have never thought about turning other wolves into hybrids. There has to be more to the ritual. Finn wouldn't write the full truth. We're missing a component."
"Doppleganger blood." Bella said suddenly. "It makes sense. Kol said that the magic that your mother used… she used a doppleganger."
"But I didn't need doppleganger blood to break my curse." Klaus pointed out.
"Because you used a moonstone." Bella said. "Who had that moonstone before?"
Klaus thought about it. "I know Katherine Pierce had it at one point. Elijah is the one that retrieved the moonstone for me. The witch that we used for the spell had her hands on the moonstone, but I don't know how she got the moonstone."
"Did you ever stop to think that it was part of Katherine's plan? We know she was behind Renee crashing and triggering her curse. Why would she want to trigger Renee's curse? Why would she-"
"Because of me." Bella murmured and looked at Klaus. "Its because of me and Elijah."
Klaus was quiet a moment. "Two hundred years ago, my brother was infatuated with her. She was very alluring. Elijah spent eight hundred years without comfort of a woman. Elijah never told me about his dalliances with her. Rebekah told me."
"And Elijah didn't end up in a box?" Damon said and snorted.
"But you were hunting her right? Why didn't you go after her then?"
Klaus sighed. "Because I had hoped my brother was happy. He was hiding it from me because he thought I would instantly kill Katherine. I am an angry individual and he's possibly right. I might have. But, I saw a difference in my brother. I love my family. All I have ever wanted is for them to be safe from our father and be able to live as we are. I would do anything for my family. I was willing to give up on my personal rage at Katherine Pierce if it meant Elijah was happy."
"Why didn't you ever tell him?" Bella asked.
"If Elijah came to me, then I would have discussed it. I can only assume now that Katherine is upset that you are Elijah's mate."
Damon snorted again. "Katherine Pierce is manipulative and uses all the men in her life as stepping stones. Your brother was just another poor soul that got caught in her trap."
"Like you?" Klaus countered.
Bella looked at Damon. "Dad. Tell me it isn't… really?"
"I was human then. She's the reason I'm… me." Damon said with a lift of his brows. "She's a nuisance. I say kill her and be done with it."
"Why do you and Klaus jump to killing? Dad, you can't just kill people you don't like."
Klaus admired Bella's humanity. After a thousand years on this Earth, he thought about how he's managed to even keep sanity. "We're vampires my love. We have… a hard time seeing the good in a person who has been so innately bad."
"Everyone can be redeemed."
"Except Katherine Pierce. She tried to kill your mother, did kill Caroline and now your mom has to deal with turning on the full moon." Klaus said matter-of-factly. "She's not kind."
"You're redeemable." Bella said to Klaus. "And you." She said, looking at Damon.
Damon sighed. "Let's… play it by ear. If she twitches the wrong way… then we kill her."
Bella sighed and then her phone beeped and she got a text message. She pulled it from her pocket. It was from an unknown number, but the message made her freeze.
[Unknown] You're mine.
"Bella?" Klaus frowned, feeling the fear spike from the imprint bond, but also her heart started speeding up in her chest. He put a hand on her arm gently and she flinched, moving away. She was fading away into a past memory. "No, not again. Bella look at me, you're not with Edward. You're here, you're with me and your father. No one is going to hurt you." He coaxed.
Bella trembled. "Klaus…"she said his name shakily before she went into his arms and trembled a little. Klaus held her to him firmly, rubbing a hand over her back.
Damon was frowning, taking her phone and looking at the message that she received. "This has to be Edward." He said and showed Klaus the message.
Klaus nodded and kissed the top of Bella's head. "Bella… my love, I will never let him harm you. Ever again. I will protect you. I promise."
Bella just cried against Klaus's chest. Things were just overwhelming for her right now.
[Two Days Later]
Renee never wanted to feel the pain of shifting ever again. It was a horrible experience. The werewolf world was new to her and when she shifted and came to the next morning, Damon was there by her side. When she looked at him, nothing else mattered in the world. She realized that she would do anything and everything for him. She imprinted on Damon. Damon talked with her for a long time about what happened seventeen years ago. When she went away like that, he flipped his switch so he wouldn't care or feel anymore. That she was his mate and at first it was confusing to him, but the pain of her leaving was too much for him. Renee wished she had known about her being his mate. She wished for a lot of things. Maybe if she had stayed in Mystic Falls, then Bella wouldn't have been so brutalized by Edward.
Bella was just happy that her parents were happy. Renee moved to the boarding house and Bella decided to move too. The Lockwood Estates never felt like home to her, but she stayed there because that was where her mom was, but she wanted to be nearer to Damon. Despite Mason and Richard being really great uncles, she still felt more like herself when she was closer to Damon and Stefan.
Klaus and Elijah were busy trying to figure out exactly what was needed for the ritual for Renee. Renee agreed that she wanted to try and do what she could to stop her from wolfing out every full moon. Especially being imprinted to a vampire and being a mate. She never wanted to hurt Damon, even if it was an accident. Werewolf bites were deadly for vampires and that aspect scared Renee enough to be extremely cautious.
Bella was in the parlor, reading on the book that was in Italian. She felt Kol's presence as soon as he entered the room. She hadn't seen him in a few days and she knew it was because he was exploring a bit after being daggered for 45 years. "Oh, you're home." She noted he had cut his hair. He was well groomed but he was dressed casually. Dark pants that were semi tight, black boots, a white t-shirt with a black leather motorcycle jacket. She noticed his daylight ring on his right hand.
"That I am." Kol said and walked over to the liquor cabinet and poured himself a drink and one for Bella. He brought it over to her then handed her the glass and she took it from him. "What are you reading?" He said as he sat next to her on the couch after lifting her feet that were resting on the couch. He placed them back on his lap and took a drink of his bourbon.
"This book that my dad had. I know Elijah and Klaus are working on trying to figure out the right ritual to help turn my mom into a hybrid so she doesn't have to shift every full moon, but I don't want to be so useless." Bella said and handed Kol the book.
Kol took the book and looked it over. "Oh, this is one of mine." He said. "Interesting that Damon had this." He said and placed his glass on the table beside the couch. "It's missing details. Finn wasn't very forthcoming when it came to details on the spells."
"Wait, you wrote this?"
Kol nodded. "I did. It's more of a transcription. There are several like this actually. Multiple languages. Finn is a linguist. He knows every language there is on this Earth. Even forgotten ones. I only assisted in transcribing them because, well, I was bored." He said and looked at Bella, seeing the shock of her face. He smiled. "I have stunned you into silence."
"How did my dad get the book…" she murmured.
Kol shrugged, set it to the side and he found himself rubbing her calf muscles. "Hmm. It's possible that he got it from a witch who got it from another witch. These books typically stay in witch circles. Damon and your mother, they were at an event where a lot of magic took place and then you were conceived."
Bella liked how Kol's hands felt. His touch was firm. Not like Elijah and Klaus. They were always so gentle with every touch. Kol treated her like normal. Like she wasn't so fragile.
"I can't read your mind though you are staring at me with intrigue. Humor me. What's going on in that mind of yours?"
Bella blushes a little. "I was just thinking about you." She murmured.
Kol raised a brow. "I'm flattered." He said as he kneaded the muscle in her calf. She hummed a little and it made him smile.
"Thank you… for everything." Bella said, her blue eyes showing her sincerity.
Kol smiled at her. "No thanks are necessary." He said simply with a slight nod. They stared at each other a few moments. The silence was welcomed between the two. Bella thought about Kol kissing her, how it would feel. If it was different from kissing Elijah or Klaus. She bit her lip out of habit as she thought about it. She gasped when Kol pulled her leg, causing her to lay flat on her back on the couch and he was hovering over her on the couch in the parlor. His face was close to hers. Her heart leapt with excitement. The action was so sudden, she should have been scared, but looking up into Kol's dark eyes, she wasn't afraid. She knew that he wouldn't hurt her. Kol leaned in, his lips touching hers now, a light feathery kiss. It sent tingles through Bella and she parted her lips so he could taste her. Kol swept his tongue across to meet hers. Kol's hand slid up the side of her leg, a firm touch. It was different from Elijah and Klaus. Kol wasn't shying away from really touching her like the other two did. It was exciting for Bella. Kol's hand pushed under the material on her shirt as he kept sliding his hand up her body. His lips were unrelenting against hers. He heard the stuttering of her heart speeding up, the scent of her arousal that filtered through him. He heard her moan slightly when his hand covered her breast. He felt the indentions of her scars. The crescent marks that were left behind from her cruel encounters with Edward. He squeezed her breast a little, feeling the weight of them in his palm. He moved his mouth from her hers and kissed at her throat, his tongue tasting her skin. He felt the pulse of her artery against his lips, but he refrained from biting her. She arched up into him, her body very responsive to his, but he drew away, sitting up.
Bella looked dazed and confused now when he sat up and stopped what he was doing. "Kol…"
Kol smiled. "My brothers have returned." He said and helped her into a sitting position. "While I would enjoy exploring further. My first time with you Bella will not be on a couch in the parlor. I am into far kinkier things." He said and stood.
Klaus walked into the parlor first, seeing Kol standing by the couch with Bella. Bella looked a little flushed and her heart was stammering a little in her chest. "Are you okay my love?" He asked, frowning.
Bella swallowed and nodded. "Yes." She cleared her throat and straightened a little. "Did you find anything out about the ritual?"
Elijah joined them after he hung up on his phone call. "The witch said that she found the moonstone coincidentally in one of those magic shops that some women claimed to be a witch at." He said. "The power of the moonstone is mentioned in some of text of Finn's book. He mentions Katarina Petrova once and it's in an obscure language. One that I am not privy to."
"Let me see the book." Kol said walking over to Elijah. Elijah was holding it in his left hand and handed it to Kol. Kol flipped through the pages. "Hmm. Yes. It says that Katarina Petrova, AKA Katherine Pierce was in possession of the moonstone during her years as a human girl in Bulgaria. Finn found Katherine when she was just a little girl. Katherine was gifted that stone by her father. The moonstone was infused with Katherine's blood. A ritual that Finn had Sage perform before he turned her." Kol explained and handed back the book.
"That explains why you didn't need Elena's blood for breaking your curse." Bella said to Klaus. "Did the witch know that?"
"She said that the doppleganger blood was no longer necessary. That the moonstone was all we needed. "Elijah said as he looked at Klaus. "She said she could feel that the power was right."
Klaus shook his head. "There is no way she coincidentally found that moonstone in some fake magic shop."
Kol smiled a little. "Oh, she for certain did not stumble across that by accident. Katherine, from my memory, is manipulative. Her angle is to hurt Elijah and to do so, she's targeted Bella."
"Why me?" Elijah asked.
"Don't play coy brother, you and Katherine had your fun two hundred years ago. She tried to use you then to bargain with Klaus, only you feared what Klaus would do and instead, you pushed her away." Kol said. "Finn is also as much to blame for this. He set you up brother."
Klaus didn't understand why Finn would want to harm him. "Hurting me…. Yes, but hurting Elijah? He would never stoop to hurting you or Finn."
"Unless he's working with our father." Elijah said. "Finn was always a follower. He followed mother's every move. Good and bad."
Kol made a hmm noise and then looked over at Bella. "Bella is the target right now. Katherine is still in Mystic Falls somewhere or in the very least she's close by enough to know what is going on."
Bella stood and walked over to Kol and Elijah. "Elijah, you know Katherine best. Where would she be hiding?"
Elijah frowned as he looked at Bella. "I'm not sure I know Katherine anymore. When I knew her, she wasn't… she wasn't like this. She seeks out revenge in all the wrong places."
"My memory of Katherine is her running over five hundred years ago when Klaus tried to break his curse the first time and she hung herself." Kol said, sliding a hand in his pocket. "Though, she obviously came back to life. As a vampire. I wonder who fed her vampire blood to make that happen. Oh right, Rebekah, which is how she got daggered the first time. Where is our lovely sister?"
"Paris." Klaus and Elijah said at the same time.
Bella ran a hand through her hair. It was a subconscious thing, she had always had the habit. "So, what about the ritual for my mom?"
"Oh, you will need doppelganger blood." Kol said with a nod. "Most certainly every ritual is going to use doppelganger blood. There is no way around it. The moonstone was infused with Katherine's human blood so that is why Klaus broke his curse. In order to create more hybrids, you need doppelganger blood."
"But how does it work? Does the blood have to be infused with Klaus's?" Bella asked.
Kol shook his head. "No. So, the wolf has to ingest Klaus's blood and then they'll have to be killed. When they transition, they have to drink doppelganger blood in order to complete their transition. Without it, they will die."
"Tell me brother, how is it you know so much about these rituals?" Klaus asked his voice a little harsh.
Kol raised a brow. "I'm the only brother Finn likes. In addition, I am also a witch brother. I know Bella told you." He said, giving Klaus his full attention.
"How is it even possible that you are able to access magic as a vampire? Elijah nor I can use our powers as a witch, so why can you?"
Kol smiled a little. "Someone's jealous."
"I'm not jealous. It was a simple question brother."
"Nothing is ever simple Klaus." Kol said. "I can siphon magic. It's not my own." He just came out with it.
Klaus narrowed his eyes. "Our family was never siphoners."
"Perhaps you're not the only brother with a different father." Kol said. "Mother… looked other places for comfort. Our father was not an easy man even as a human."
Elijah knew more about this than Kol or Klaus. "He's right." He blew out his breath. "I didn't know it to be true, but Kol's ability to siphon magic… he is not Mikael's son either."
Klaus looked at Elijah. "Seriously? You're just now telling me that you had suspicions that Mikael was not Kol's father either."
"I had no reason to believe those suspicions Niklaus. I am just now finding out he has these abilities. Perhaps if there weren't so many secrets in this family then-"
"It doesn't matter." Bella cut Elijah off. "What matters is… are you sure that is what Klaus needs to do so my mom can stop turning every full moon?"
"Absolutely positive." Kol said and looked at her, he reached a hand out and tucked hair behind her ear. "I wouldn't lie to you. Ever." He reassured her.
Bella swallowed, her icy eyes shifting away to look at Klaus, who looked irritated with Kol. "Okay then. That's what we have to do. I'll talk to Uncle Stefan and my dad. See if Elena will be willing to help by donating a little blood. Then, we'll do the ritual like the book says."
"Full moon is garbage. You don't need a full moon for it. Like I said, Finn… he was not always forthcoming. Feed Klaus's blood to your mother, then kill her. She'll wake up, drink Elena's blood and viola. She's a hybrid." Kol said vibrantly.
Bella looked at Klaus. "This is it."
Klaus nodded, focusing on Bella now. "It is. I'll do anything for you Bella, including helping your mother."
