Chapter 37: Family of Blood

Jenny demands he make a decision. Baines states that if his human heart breaks then the Time Lord will emerge.

"Doesn't work like that either." Nine states through gritted teeth.

Out of sight, Latimer takes the watch from his pocket, and opens it. Golden energy shimmers and the Family turn their heads quickly.

"Well, for once that's a good thing." Jack sighs. A distraction was the most helpful thing in the circumstances.

"The one and only time except to make the Doctor himself again." Rose agrees.

Baines calls out it is him. Latimer closes the watch. Martha gets the gun off Jenny and uses her as a shield while she aims it at Baines.

"Nice going." Mickey says appreciatively.

Martha states that one move will make her shoot. Baines says the maid is full of fire and Martha tells him to shut up.

"About time someone did." Donna laughs.

"I'd been wanting to do that for months." Martha gives a small chuckle.

"I don't blame you." Jack nods.

She fires the gun at the ceiling. Clark tells him to be careful as this is all so he can live forever. Baines says he will shoot her down and Martha tells him if he tries it they will die together. Baines points out she looks too scared to pull the trigger.

"Scared and holding a gun is a bad combination if you want to avoid being shot." Rose remarks.

Martha reminds him that being scared and holding a gun is a good combination and asks if he wants to risk it. The family lower their guns. Joan returns to the Doctor. Martha tells him to get everyone out. Joan agrees with Martha and the two start shepherding people out of the building. The villagers run out, screaming. The Doctor asks about Martha when the room is empty. She tells him he should escort his lady friend to safety. After a few seconds he leaves.

"He left you?" Mickey asks in outrage.

"I told him too." Martha says in a small voice.

"It was too dangerous for him to stay. He's who they wanted." Sarah-Jane points out.

"Not the point! He left her! Left her to face four of them on her own." Mickey snarls, glaring at Ten.

Outside the village hall the Doctor tells Hicks to warn the village and then tells Latimer to get back to the school and tell the headmaster. Latimer yells at him to get off and that he is as bad as they are. He runs off.

"Great. He's the only one who can fix this and he just runs off. Brilliant." Nine groans.

"He has good reason to be scared of me." Ten reminds him quietly.

"Yeah well he could still give the watch back if he's so scared of it." Rose mutters.

Jenny gets away from Martha and rejoins her Family. Martha warns them not to try anything or Baines gets it. Baines states she is brave and Jenny wishes she could have taken her form.

"Very good job she didn't." Sarah-Jane says.

Martha backs away as the Family move forward. She asks if Jenny is gone and the Mother agrees that Jenny was consumed and the body is hers. Martha asks if that means she is dead and Jenny agrees, saying she went screaming. A scarecrow grabs Martha from behind. It takes the gun but Martha escapes and runs out of the hall.

"Good job." Mickey breathes a sigh of relief.

The Doctor and Joan are still outside. Martha yells at them to move and says he is rubbish as a human.

"You're not wrong." Nine mutters miserably.

Martha, the Doctor and Joan run. Latimer runs down a lane, hearing explosions. The Family emerge and Baines says they've been in hiding too long. That this is sport.

"Sport?" Donna asks in disgust.

"To them it is." Ten's lip curls. He had tried so hard to just let them die peacefully.

Jenny says she can smell Mr Smith and that he has gone back to the school. Baines asks what they know about Martha. Jenny glows green as she says the body has traces of memory and that Martha would go walking to the west. She orders her Husband to follow the scent west and find what she was hiding.

"Oh don't say they find the TARDIS." Nine groans.

Clark leaves with scarecrows. Baines and the mother head to the school. At the school, the Doctor closes the main doors behind them, grabs the bell and starts ringing it. Martha asks what he is doing.

"Waking the school, I should guess." Jack says. Nine frowns. He did not want children getting involved in this fight and it was hard to comprehend any version of him, human or not, that would. Well, he guessed that John Smith didn't want them too but he was still involving them.

He tells her that maybe one man can't fight them but the school teaches them to take a stand. He calls for them all to take arms as students come flooding in. Martha tells him he can't do that.

"Well, he can. As far as he knows the school is under attack and needs to be ready." Jack points out fairly.

"It won't do any good, just get the kids killed." Mickey reminds him.

"Yes but it's better than being slaughtered in their sleep. Do I like it? No. Do I get where the Doctor is coming from, as a human teacher? Kinda." Jack shrugs.

The Doctor points out she wants him to fight.

"Well sort of. I want the other you to come back and help." Martha sighs sadly.

He continues to call for them to take arms. Hutchinson asks what is the matter and the Doctor tells him there is an enemy at the door. Outside, the Family approach the school with scarecrows. Baines states they are sounding the alarms. Jenny tells him not to look so happy as their bodies can damage and die which is why they need the Time Lord.

"If you die as a human, will you regenerate?" Rose asks suddenly.

"No. My biology is completely human." Nine tells her. She cringes slightly. "But they don't want to hurt me. They need me." He reminds her gently.

"It doesn't matter. There are guns, anything could happen."

"Except I'm sitting right there, quite healthy." He points to Ten.

Baines then states they will have guns so they should have a little caution. He tells the girl to find a way in and spy on them. She skips off with her balloon. In the school, guns are being passed around and Martha tries to tell the Doctor he can't do this.

"Bit late for that. Once they kids are awake and aware of an enemy they aren't just going to go back to bed." Donna points out.

"You'd be better off trying to find Latimer." Jack agrees.

He tells Redfern to maintain position over the stable yard and Martha continues persuading him the boys shouldn't fight. He tells her they are cadets trained to defend the King. The headmaster enters and asks what is going on. The Doctor explains the school is under attack.

"You missed all the yelling about taking arms? What did you think was going on?" Donna rolls her eyes.

"Maybe he thought it was a prank or something." Mickey shrugs.

He doesn't seem to believe him, asking if they should speak in private. The Doctor explains that Baines and Mister Clark have gone mad and murdered people in the village. Rocastle turns to Matron who confirms the story. He states that perhaps Mr Smith did well but wonders why they think the danger is coming to the school. Joan states that they threatened Mr Smith, saying they would follow him but they don't know why. Rocastle believes them and starts giving out orders. He then says that he and Mr Philips will investigate. Martha tries to stop him.

"I get why you're doing it but he's not going to like that. Or believe you." Mickey tells her.

"I had to try." She states.

"The only thing you can do to help is find that watch and open it." He reminds her.

"I know." She sighs.

Rocastle tells Mr Smith that his favourite servant is giving him advice and tells him to control her. Then he leaves with Mr Philips. Martha says to herself she needs to find the watch. She runs off down a corridor and Joan follows her. They run past Latimer who is hiding the watch.

"Oh brilliant." Rose groans.

The watch whispers to Latimer, telling him to keep him safe, dark and closed. His voice states that the time is not right yet.

"Wonderful. You're telling him to hide." Donna throws up her hands.

Lucy sneaks into the school. Rocastle and Philips walk towards Baines, Jenny and the scarecrows. Rocastle states it is Baines and one of the cleaning staff, adding that there is always a woman involved. He continues that he thinks this is a practical joke that got out of hand.

"He thinks murdering people in the village is a joke that got out of hand?" Rose asks.

"I guess he'd rather think that than one of his students and one staff member actually killed people." Jack shrugs.

Baines greets him and Rocastle tells him to keep a civil tongue. Philips states that he suspects alcohol has played a part. The Doctor watches from a window.

"That's not a bad guess I suppose." Mickey says thoughtfully. "Possession, alcohol. Pretty similar."

Philips then asks about the scarecrows, assuming they are people in fancy dress. Baines says he made them himself as he is ever so good at science. He pulls an arm off the scarecrow and states they are molecular fringe animation fashioned in the shape of straw men. They are his private army.

"Now there is someone with too much time on their hands." Donna mutters. Everyone turns to look at her, eyebrows raised. Donna looks back at them all, confused and then smirks as she realises what she just said.

Rocastle tells Baines to come inside with them. Baines replies that he will send them Mr Smith. All they want is Mr Smith and whatever he has done with his Time Lord consciousness then they will leave them alone.

"I doubt that. You kill for sport. Once you got to live forever, you'd probably come back and hunt them all." Rose scoffs.

Rocastle says that Baines speaks with someone else's voice and asks who it is. Baines tells him they are the family of blood. Rocastle mentions the deaths and Baines tells him they were glorious. He replies that the school is armed. Baines asks if they will thank him. Rocastle is confused so Baines asks what he knows of history, about the next year.

"Next year isn't exactly history to them." Mickey points out, rolling his eyes.

Rocastle tells him he isn't making sense. Baines replies that the Family has travelled far and wide looking for Mr Smith and they saw that war is coming. He asks if the boys will thank the man who taught them war is glorious.

"I hate to agree with a monster but he sort of has a point." Rose mutters.

Angrily Rocastle reminds him he has been a soldier and that he would go back for King and Country.

"That may be true. It still doesn't mean that war is glorious." Mickey scowls.

Baines vaporises Philips. Then he tells the headmaster to go back to school and send them Mr Smith. Rocastle runs inside while Jenny laughs. Mr Smith disappears from the window. Inside he is leaning over a table but looks up when Rocastle comes back in. He asks Mr Smith why Mr Philips was murdered.

"Oi! Don't you be blaming him." Rose scowls.

"It is me they are after." Ten reminds her, looking pained.

"True but that doesn't make you responsible for what they do. Besides, Mr Smith truly has no idea and he hasn't done anything except try to warn the school.2 She argues.

The Doctor replies that he has no idea and the telephone lines have been cut so they are on their own. Rocastle says they will make a fight of it. He tells Hutchinson they will build a barricade within the courtyards.

"Poor guy. Baines seems to have been his closest friend and now he is a murdering maniac." Donna says sympathetically.

"He might have been a little brat but he didn't deserve that." Jack agrees.

Rocastle continues that they need to fortify the entrances and build their defences. Then he turns to the rest of the kids and says they will stand against them in the name of the King. They all say 'yes, Sir'. A wooden beam is put across the main doors. Hutchinson is giving out orders, then he spots Latimer. He calls him a coward and hauls him up saying he will do his duty with the rest of them.

"He's too young for this sort of thing." Rose sighs sadly.

"Poor kid goes to war next year." Jack reminds her.

Rocastle, the Doctor and Hutchinson are giving out orders as the school prepares. Lucy watches from a window. Outside, Baines states that they have an army but so do they. He calls for his soldiers. More scarecrows raise their heads and make for the school.

"That's creepy." Donna shudders.

"Agreed." Martha and Rose say together.

Preparations inside the school continue as the scarecrows assemble. Baines comments that war has come to England a year in advance. Lucy contacts the Family telepathically and tells them to wait as the Time Lord is playing some sort of trick. Baines orders her to discover him.

"What trick does she think he is playing?" Rose frowns. Everybody shrugs.

Martha is searching while Joan just stands there. Martha explains about the Time Lord consciousness in the watch. Joan comments that alien doesn't mean from abroad. Martha tells her that John Smith was born on another world, agreeing when Joan states he is another species.

"She seems to be taking this rather well." Nine comments.

"I don't think she quite believes Martha yet." Rose tells him.

Joan asks who Martha is in this fairytale.

"See?"

Martha says she is just his friend. Then she adds that Joan doesn't have a rival as much as she might...then she cuts herself off.

Martha sighs inwardly groaning.

Joan asks if she is human and Martha agrees. She adds that she is training to be a proper doctor, not an alien one. Joan calls this nonsense as a skivvy wouldn't train to be a doctor, especially one of Martha's colour.

"Oi!" Mickey scowls in Martha's defence. She gives him a weak smile.

Martha is clearly offended and then lists off the bones of the hand. Joan points out she could have read that in a book. Martha states that she did so she could pass her exam. Joan says she has to go. Martha tells her that they can stop them if they find the watch but Joan tells her the boys are going to fight. She continues that she might not be a doctor but she is their nurse and they will need her.

"She does have a point there." Jack notes.

"The guns they have vaporise people. I'm not sure what a nurse can do about that." Rose points out.

"The scarecrows can probably do a fair amount of damage." Donna reminds her.

In the barn, Clark informs the rest of the family he has found the TARDIS.

"Fantastic." Nine groans. "At least they can't get inside."

Joan has changed into her uniform. The Doctor gives some more orders before coming over and telling her it's not safe.

"At least some part of you stays the same." Rose smiles gently.

Joan tells him she is doing her duty just as much as he is. Then comments it's a fine evening they've had together. The Doctor notes that it wasn't quite as planned.

"Things never are with you." Jack laughs.

"What's life without a little adventure?" Rose asks.

"Less dangerous." Nine tells her.

She asks him about Nottingham. He looks confused and she asks him about where he was brought up.

"Not really the time." Nine frowns.

"I guess she's trying to determine if Martha is right." Jack shrugs.

He gives her some facts about Nottingham.

"Yeah, I don't think that's what she meant." Donna gives a small laugh.

Joan tells him that sounds like an encyclopedia. She asks where he lived. He gives her more facts, no real description. She asks for more details like where he played as a child. She begs him to tell her and he asks how she can think he isn't real.

"It's becoming rather obvious." Sarah-Jane says sadly.

He asks if it was a lie when he kissed her and she says it wasn't. He comments that the Doctor sounds like some romantic lost prince.

Everybody except the Doctors snigger at this despite the tension.

He asks if she would rather that, if he is not enough for her.

"No. She wants the Doctor not to be real." Rose sighs.

Joan denies this. He says he has to go.

"You're impeccable timing stays with you then." Sarah-Jane smiles a little.

"Not my timing. There is a battle about to take place." Ten protests.

Joan tells him that Martha was right about one thing. The boys are only children. She tells him that the John Smith she was getting to know wouldn't want them to fight, never mind the Doctor.

"She's right." Martha says. "Even as Mr Smith you didn't like guns."

Rocastle calls for Mr Smith. He asks what choice he has. Then he kisses her and leaves. Outside Hutchinson and Latimer are working together. Latimer tells him they both survive this, he has seen them going to war together but not here, not now. Hutchinson asks what that is supposed to mean. Latimer says that maybe he was given the watch to help. He takes the watch out.

"Oh yes, just show it to everyone." Nine groans.

Latimer runs away. Hutchinson calls after him he is a coward. As he runs, Latimer calls back that he is, every time.

"Oh alright. He's not so bad." Nine smiles slightly.

Martha gives a little scream, throws papers into the air and leaves the Doctor's study. Latimer is hiding, talking to the watch. The voice tells him to beware of her. Latimer looks up and sees Lucy standing in the corridor, holding her balloon. She sniffs.

"Fantastic." Nine groans again.

"At least it's the girl. Latimer can take care of himself against her." Mickey points out.

"Except she'll call the others if she finds out about the watch." Jack reminds him.

He tells her to keep away. Lucy asks who he is. Latimer tells her he saw her at the dance and that she is one of them. Lucy notices he has something but Latimer tells her it is nothing. He says that whatever she is, she is still in the shape of a girl. He asks if she really wants to see this. Latimer aims the watch at Lucy and the golden energy shows her an explosion, and the Doctor.

Donna and Ten both cringe at the image shown to Lucy.

She runs away.

"Oh wonderful. Now they will all know that they just need the watch which is protected by one schoolkid." Donna rolls her eyes.

"That was a stupid move." Jack agrees.

Outside the school Baines and Jenny realise the Time Lord is inside the device. Baines comments that everything he is, is concealed in the hands of a schoolboy. Now they know what they need to find and can commence the attack. The army of scarecrows moves forward.

"I take it back. I want to strangle that kid." Nine scowls.

In the courtyard Rocastle calls for them to stand to. There is hammering on the main gate and he calls for them to be at post. Everyone takes aim. One of the boys reports that the enemy is approaching.

"I think they noticed." Donna states.

The screen shows all the boys looking scared. Rocastle calls for them all to find the biting point. Even Mr Smith has a gun.

Both Doctors cringe at the image.

"That's the strangest sight ever." Rose mutters.

One of the boys wipes away a tear.

"Oh my god. Those poor kids." Sarah-Jane whispers, hands over her mouth.

The scarecrows break in. Rocastle calls fire. The boys open fire and take down scarecrows as they advance. The Doctor does not squeeze his trigger. He looks up and down the line of children and then lowers his gun. All the scarecrows are down.

"That was too easy." Jack frowns suspiciously.

"There is still the Family to contend with. They have better guns." Donna points out.

Rocastle calls for a cease fire and then walks over to the scarecrows. He announces they are just straw. Hutchinson is pleased that they didn't have to kill anyone. They hear footsteps and Rocastle gets back behind the barricade, telling them all to stand to. Lucy appears.

"Oh that's not good. They'll try to protect her because she's a little girl." Nine sighs.

Rocastle tells her to come into the school as she doesn't know who's out there. Martha runs out and tells him not to go near her. He tells her she was told to be quiet. She states that Lucy is part of it and asks Matron to back her up. Joan suggests the headmaster stay back. Martha turns to the Doctor. He agrees Lucy was with Baines in the village.

"At least one of them helps out." Mickey sighs angrily. He hated how Martha was being treated on this adventure. He knew part of it was the time and her skin colour but it still angered him.

Rocastle states that he has seen many strange things but he will not allow the child to be on the field of battle. He tells Lucy to come with him.

"I do admire him for that but it's going to get him killed." Rose winces.

She replies that he is funny. He agrees and tells her to take his hand. She says he is so funny. Then she produces a gun and vaporises him. Lucy asks who is going to shoot her. The Doctor orders everyone to put down their guns.

"You're going to let her kill them instead?" Donna asks in astonishment.

"No. I wanted the boys to retreat." Ten tells her.

Hutchinson objects but the Doctor says he won't see this happen anymore. He instructs them to retreat in an orderly fashion, telling Hutchinson to lead the way. He protests again but the Doctor is firm. Baines arrives and tells them all to run, firing his gun up in the air. Everyone retreats as Baines calls for the scarecrows to reanimate.

"Figured it was too easy." Jack groans.

"They won't be retreating in an orderly fashion after that." Mickey notes with a wince.

The boys scatter through the buildings, followed by the reanimated scarecrows. Latimer runs upstairs. The Doctor ushers some of the boys. Martha calls out not to go to the village.

"The Family are all there. The village should be safe now." Jack points out.

"We still don't know where Clark is. Not at the time anyway." Martha reminds him.

The Doctor tells the ladies to go as well. Joan says not until they have gotten the boys out. The scarecrows have rounded up some boys. Jenny asks if these boys have it. One by one they are put in front of Lucy who states none of them have it. The last one is Hutchinson. Baines says they can kill them then. In the dormitory, Latimer opens the watch again.

"At least that time it was useful." Nine sighs. He really wants the watch back in Mr Smith's hands, or even with Martha.

They realise it is upstairs and forget about the boys. As they go upstairs, Hutchinson ushers the other boys out. The Doctor tells the girls to go again, saying that he will find any boys left inside.

"You never learn." Rose tells him fondly.

"We don't leave when you're in trouble." Sarah-Jane agrees.

He opens the door. There are scarecrows on the other side. He slams it shut and locks it.

Everyone laughs a little.

The Doctor suggests retreating. Outside, Latimer is running for the woods when Baines and Jenny get to the dormitory. Clark stands outside the building, shouting, as the Doctor, Joan and Martha hide in the bushes. He has the TARDIS.

"I'm actually impressed they managed to move it." Jack admits grudgingly.

"Does it weigh the same as a police box or does the extra space inside make it heavier?" Donna wonders.

"It weighs the same as a police box." Ten tells her.

Clark, Baines and Jenny all call for the Doctor to come out. Martha tells the Doctor that he recognises it. He says he has never seen it is his life. She asks if he remembers its name. Joan points out that he wrote about it in his journal. He looks terrified and upset as he states that he is John Smith. That is all he wants to be, John Smith with his life, job and his love. He asks if he is a good man.

"He's the best." Sarah-Jane says softly. Rose squeezes Ten's hand, giving him a sympathetic look.

Joan says that he is. The Doctor asks why he can't stay. Martha tells him they need the Doctor. He asks what he is then before saying he is just a story. He runs away and the girls both follow him.

"Even if Latimer gets the watch to you, John Smith isn't going to want to open it." Jack points out.

"No. He isn't." Ten states.

"Martha can just open it for him." Mickey shrugs.

"I get the feeling she will give him the choice." Sarah-Jane tells him.

Baines says that one more phase and they won't have to hunt. The Family leaves and he orders the soldier to guard the TARDIS. Joan, Martha and the Doctor are in a country lane. Joan says she knows somewhere they can hide. The Doctor says they need to keep going.

"Listen to her." Rose says with an eye roll.

"I'll do my best." Ten smirks at her.

She tells him to listen to her for once. She takes off with Martha right behind her. The Doctor follows reluctantly. On the ship, Baines tells the rest of the Family to prepare the armaments. He doubts England is ready for this. He tells them to fix targets and begin counting down.

"That doesn't sound good." Donna mutters.

The trio appear outside a cottage. Joan says it should be empty but it's a long time since she has run that far.

"You soon get used to it." Mickey laughs a little.

Martha asks who lives here. Joan says that if she is right then nobody does. It is dark inside. The table is laid for tea.)

"The table is set out. I thought she said nobody lives there?" Rose frowns.

"Maybe they don't anymore." Jack says, though he is frowning as well.

Joan calls out but no one answers. She states they should be safe there. Martha asks whose house it is. Joan replies it is the Cartwright's.

"Isn't that the little girl's last name?" Nine asks, trying to remember.

"Yeah. I guess that's why the Matron figured it would be empty. The girl has been taken over so probably vaporised the parents." Jack realises with a grimace.

"Those poor people." Sarah-Jane says sadly.

She explains that if the girl came home and the parents tried to stop her then they were probably vanished. She touches the teapot and announces it is stone cold before saying how easily she accepts these ideas.

"Yeah. She's still taking it pretty well." Donna nods approvingly.

The Doctor sinks into a chair still looking upset before saying he needs to go to them before anyone else dies. Joan tells him he can't before asking Martha if there is anything they can do. Martha says not without the watch. The Doctor angrily points out she is the Doctor's companion. He asks what exactly she does for him and why he needs her.

"Everybody needs someone, even just for company." Jack states, glancing around the room before looking at Donna. She refuses to meet his gaze.

Martha says he is lonely. He angrily states that that is what she wants him to become. There is a knock at the door. They all turn to look as Joan asks if it is them.

"I'm not sure they are the knocking type." Nine mutters.

"Hopefully it's Latimer." Rose says.

Martha says she isn't an expert but she doesn't think scarecrows knock. She opens the door and Latimer is there.

"About time too." Jack states.

"The watch was telling him not to reveal it." Martha points out.

"Yet he was quite happy opening it all the time." Mickey reminds her. "It might have been useful a couple of times but the rest it just attracted unnecessary attention."

He says he brought them this and he holds out the watch. Martha tells the Doctor to hold it but he refuses. She asks him again and Latimer points out it told him to find them and it wants to be held. Joan asks why he didn't return it sooner and he replies that he was waiting and he was scared of the Doctor. She asks why and Latimer tells her he has seen him. He is fire and ice and rage.

"Really not helping persuade John to touch the watch." Rose groans.

"He's not wrong though." Nine says sadly.

"You might be those things but you are also brilliant and kind and you bring hope to so many people." Rose tells him firmly.

The Doctor tells him to stop it but Latimer continues. The Doctor tells him to stop it again but then Latimer states that he is wonderful. Martha smiles. Joan pulls out the journal and the Doctor says they are just stories. Joan tells him they know now that isn't true. There is an explosion outside and they look out of the window. Fireballs are falling to earth a little way away.

"Time is running out." Sarah-Jane states.

"It always is." Ten sighs.

In the ship Baines says this will flush him out. Joan says they are destroying the village. The Doctor takes the watch and Joan tells him not to. There is a whisper and Latimer asks if he can hear it. The Doctor says it is like he's asleep, waiting to wake up. Latimer asks why it spoke to him. The Doctor says, in his normal voice, that he was born with a low level telepathic field. An extra synaptic engram causing, then he breaks off and looks terrified and upset again. He asks if that is how he talks.

"Oh, I didn't think I would miss all that scientific babble quite so much." Rose laughs.

Martha says that's him. All he needs to do is open it and he is back. The Doctor states that she knew this whole time and watches while he and nurse Redfern.

"What exactly could she do? 'Sorry Mr Smith you can't fall in love, in three months you'll turn back into an alien'. Yeah, that would've gone down well." Mickey scoffs.

Martha cuts him off saying she didn't know how to stop him. She adds that he gave her a list of things to watch out for and that wasn't on it.

"He won't like that." Sarah-Jane winces.

Joan looks in the journal by moonlight through the window. The Doctor asks if falling in love didn't even occur to him. Martha says no. He asks what sort of a man is that and then states that she expects him to do. Martha points out it was always going to end because the Family has a limited lifespan which is why they need to consume a Time Lord.

"Not a good thing to tell him." Jack points out.

"He'll want to just give them the watch so he doesn't have to die and the Family stop attacking." Donna agrees.

The Doctor harshly states that her job was to execute him. Martha reminds him that people are dying out there. She says that they need him and she needs him. She tells him that the Doctor is everything to her. He doesn't look at her but she doesn't care.

Nobody felt it was right to comment just how much of a blatant lie that was. Nine opened his mouth but Rose elbowed him before he could.

Martha continues that she loves him to bits before commenting she hopes he doesn't remember that. There is another explosion and the Doctor realises he can give them the watch and then he can live.

"Took him longer than I expected." Donna comments with a sad frown.

Martha tells him he can't do that. He states that if they want the Doctor they can have him. She tells him the Doctor won't let him do that.

"I'm not sure there is much he can do from inside a fob watch." Mickey states.

He desperately says that if they get what they want then but Joan cuts him off saying then it all ends in destruction. She says that she never read to the end but those creatures would live forever and bring war across the stars for every child. She asks Martha and Latimer to leave them alone.

"Oh bless her. She has to convince the man she loves to die so another can take his place to save the world." Jack says sadly.

"Nobody should have to do that." Sarah-Jane agrees.

Martha and Latimer leave. Joan hugs a sobbing Doctor. The bombardment on the village continues as Martha and Latimer sit outside, then she hugs him. Inside Joan says that she would do it for him if she could.

"Could someone else open the watch and become the Doctor?" Donna asks.

"No." Ten tells her.

She says that her hopes aren't important. He turns and says he won't love her. Joan states that if he isn't John then she doesn't want him to. She continues that she had one husband that died and she never thought and then he happened.

"Poor woman." Sarah-Jane sympathises.

He assures her it was real. He really thought. Joan asks to see it, taking the watch and calling it a blasted thing. She admits she can't hear anything, it says nothing to her. The Doctor puts his hands over Joan's and the watch. He sees a vision of what their future could be. On his deathbed, John Smith asks if they are all safe and Joan assures him they are and they all send their love. He says it's time and thanks her before closing his eyes.

Everyone watches the screen sadly.

He asks if she saw. Joan says that the Time Lord has such adventures but could never have a life like that.

"Well, maybe someday." Nine whispers. Rose smiles at him.

"You'd get married?" She asks, equally quietly. "You know my mum would insist on planning the wedding." Nine shudder slightly before smiling back.

"Anything for you." He kisses her before turning back to the screen.

He states that he could. Joan asks what he is going to do. On the ship Baines says they will blast them into dust. The Doctor comes in. A boom rocks the ship, and he lurches against a column of switches. He asks them to stop saying he will do anything they want. Baines tells him to say please which he does. Jenny activates a control. Lucy sniffs and states he is still human.

"What?" Jack asks in confusion.

He states that he can't pretend to understand but he wants them to know he is innocent. He made him John Smith and he had no control over it. He runs his hands over more switches.

"No. That's the Doctor. The proper Doctor." Rose states. "He knows exactly what he is doing."

"How can he still smell human to them though? If he could do that he wouldn't need the watch." Mickey points out.

"I don't know but I'm sure that's him. He knows exactly what he is doing pressing those buttons." Rose shrugs. Ten smirks at her.

Jenny states that he didn't just make himself human he made himself an idiot.

"Well I'm not really built to be human." Ten mutters petulantly.

"We still make a stupid human." Nine shakes his head.

Baines says it's the same thing.

"Oi!" Everyone protests.

He says he doesn't care about the Doctor or their Family. He just wants them to go so they can have him. He begs them to take it and leave. He holds out the watch. Baines says at last as he takes it. He then grabs the Doctor by the lapels and says not to think that saved his life.

"Well that was obvious." Donna rolls her eyes.

"Yes, if only the monsters would be unpredictable once in a while." Mickey says sarcastically.

He pushes the Doctor away. More switches get activated as the Doctor falls against the wall. Baines says they will now have the lives of a Time Lord. He opens the watch and they all sniff deeply. Baines calls out it's empty. The Doctor asks where it has gone.

"Your acting has been brilliant, I'll give you that but I don't think even they will buy that." Rose tells him.

"Worth a try." Ten shrugs, grinning at her.

Baines says to tell him. Baines throws the watch to the Doctor, who catches it without looking. Back in the Doctor's voice he states that the explanation is they have been fooled by an olfactory misdirection.

"You couldn't have done that in the first place?" Donna asks.

"They wouldn't have been fooled for three months." Ten tells her. "I also wouldn't have been able to keep it up in my sleep so they would have sensed me."

He says he doesn't like the look of the hydrokinometer. He then says they shouldn't have let him press all those buttons. Then he adds that in fairness he will give them some advice. He tells them to run and then leaves as alarms start to sound. Baines tells the Family to run.

"I think their ship might be about to blow up." Jack laughs.

"Of course it is." Donna snickers.

They all run across the field and then the ship explodes. One by one the Family looks up and the Doctor stands over them. Baines' voice says that he never raised his voice which was the worst part. The fury of the Time Lord. He continues that they discovered why the one who had fought with gods and demons had run away from them. He was being kind.

"He always gives a chance." Sarah-Jane says softly.

Clark, wearing heavy chains, falls into a pit. Baines' voice continues that his father was wrapped in unbreakable chains forged in the heart of a dwarf star. He tricked his mother into an event horizon of a collapsing galaxy to be imprisoned there. Jenny is sucked out of the TARDIS as the Doctor watches.

Martha buries her face in Mickey's chest.

It continues that the Doctor still visits his sister once a year. He wonders if one day the Doctor will forgive her. It shows the Doctor looking at a mirror with Lucy hiding behind a curtain. Baines' voice explains that he trapped her in every mirror and that if you look at your reflection and see something move behind you it's her.

"That's definitely creepy. Now I'm not sure I want to look in a mirror again." Rose cringes.

"Agreed." Everyone else, bar the Doctors and Jack agree with her.

"No looking in mirrors, no going anywhere near scarecrows, this has given me quite a list of things to avoid." Donna laughs a little nervously.

Baines says that he was suspended in time. The Doctor put him to work standing over the field of England. It shows the Doctor putting a sack over Baines' head so he looks like all the other scarecrows. Then he walks away. Baines' voice says that they wanted to live forever so the Doctor made sure that they did.

"Fitting, I suppose." Jack mutters quietly.

Joan sits at the Cartwright table. She stands up as the Doctor comes in. She looks out of the window as she asks if it is done. He says it is. She informs him that the police and the army are at the school and parents have come to take the boys home.

"Probably for the best." Martha says.

"Yeah." Jack agrees.

She says she should go as they will have so many questions and she isn't sure what to say. Then she turns around and is surprised to see he looks the same. Then she asks him to forgive her rudeness as she finds it difficult to look at him.

"Don't blame her." Rose says.

"No. I wouldn't be able to look at him either." Donna nods.

Joan says she must call him Doctor and asks where John Smith is. He tells her that he is in there somewhere. She asks like a story. Then asks if he can change back. He says he can but that he won't when she asks. Joan tells him that John Smith was a braver man than him.

"Nonsense." Rose scowls. "Yes John Smith was a brave and wonderful man but so is the Doctor!" Ten just gives her a sad smile.

She points out that he chose to change but John chose to die.

"You have no idea why he chose to change. That was a brave choice." Rose sniffs.

"She just lost the man she loves. Now the Doctor looks just like him. She's allowed to be a little upset." Jack reminds her gently.

The Doctor tells her to come with him. She is confused and he says she should travel with him.

"What on Earth makes you think she would want that?" Donna asks him incredulously.

"She can barely even look at you and you want her to come and essentially live with you?" Sarah-Jane asks in equal astonishment.

"I wanted to thank her and apologise." Ten shrugs sheepishly.

"Not the way to do it." Mickey tells him firmly.

Joan asks as what. He tells her his companion.

"That's also a little unfair to Martha. She admitted she loves you and you want to bring the human that John Smith fell in love with on your travels?" Jack looks at the Doctor like he's an idiot.

Joan tells him that isn't fair. She asks what she must look like to him and that she must seem so very small. The Doctor tells her they could start again and he would like that. They could at least try because he is capable of everything John Smith is and was.

"Ok, very cruel to Martha. You not only want to bring her along but try a relationship with her in front of Martha?" Rose asks incredulously. "Either that or dump Martha back home." Martha just tries to curl up and make herself smaller. She hadn't realised that the Doctor had offered this to Joan. She tried very hard to swallow the bitterness and anger she was feeling but it wouldn't go away. Mickey hugged her tightly, glaring at Ten for his thoughtlessness.

"Not only that but I'm assuming you remember everything so you heard her tell John that she didn't want you to love her." Donna points out.

"Ok, ok, I get it. It was a bad idea." Ten cries out. "I just felt guilty for what happened."

She says she can't. He asks her to come with him and she says she can't again. He asks why not and she points out that John Smith is dead and he looks like him. He says that John Smith is here inside if you look into his eyes.

"Dude, she said no. Stop pushing her." Mickey glares at Ten some more. Nine looked at his future counterpart sadly. He suspected there was more behind the offer. If it was purely for her benefit he would have accepted her answer. He guessed that having had a taste of life as John Smith he wanted to try and hold onto that happiness as the Doctor. However he knew it wouldn't work regardless of her answer. Be doubted she would ever love him as she had John Smith, if she could even love him at all.

She asks him to answer her one question. She asks if the Doctor had never visited would anybody there have died. He stares at her but doesn't answer. SHe tells him he can go. He leaves without looking back. Once he is gone she picks up the journal, clutching it to her and cries. In the pouring rain. Martha is waiting by the TARDIS, which is now in a field.

"You like lugging that thing about, don't you?" Donna chuckles.

"As I'm back as a Time Lord, I can fly it now. Didn't want to leave it in the middle of the school yard." Ten reminds her.

The Doctor says right then and Martha asks how Joan was. He says it is time they moved on. She offered to go and but he cuts her off repeating that it is time they moved on. Martha tells him that last night she would have said anything to get him to change.

"Yeah but you wouldn't have wished the Doctor wouldn't remember if you hadn't meant it." Jack mutters quietly.

He agrees that of course she would and they awkwardly agree that it's fine. The Doctor then says thanks for looking after him. They hug.

"At least you remembered a thank you." Mickey sighs.

Latimer calls to them and they break apart. He says he wanted to say goodbye and thank them because he has seen the future and knows what needs to be done. He says the biggest war ever is coming. Martha tells him he doesn't have to fight.

"They do really. Partly because they'll be given no choice but Latimer can use the knowledge to save people. Especially Hutchinson given that one vision we saw him have." Sarah-Jane points out.

Latimer says they do. Martha tells him he could get hurt. He points out that so could she, travelling with the Doctor but it won't stop her. The Doctor says he would be honoured if he'd take this, He gives him the watch. Latimer comments that he can't hear anything.

"I'd hope not." Nine laughs a little.

The Doctor tells him it is just a watch now but to keep it with him for good luck. Martha tells him to look after himself. Martha hugs and kisses Latimer on the cheek, then goes into the TARDIS. The Doctor winks at Latimer, saying he'll like this bit and then goes in himself. The TARDIS dematerialises. Latimer grins and then walks back across the field.

"It is cool to watch." Rose grins.

"Unless it's leaving you behind." Jack mutters. Ten looks at him guiltily. Especially for what was coming up soon. They ended up at the end of time with the TARDIS trying to get rid of Jack.

It shows a scene from WW1. The Doctor's voice explains how the war came about as a muddy hand opens the watch. Latimer notes the time and tells Hutchinson the time is now. A shell whistles towards them and Latimer yells for them to go right. They leap into a ditch and the shell explodes nearby. Latimer states that they made it and thanks the Doctor.

"Oh don't thank me. You made it past one explosion. Still the rest of the war to go." Nine says.

"That shell should have killed him. That vision saved two lives." Donna points out.

"How many more did it cost for him to have that one vision?" Nine asks sadly.

He tells Hutchinson to come on. He protests saying he isn't going to make it. Latimer tells him he is. He states that he promised all those years ago. Then he orders him to come on.

"Well, it certainly made him more confident." Martha smiles.

A lady vicar is reading from For The Fallen, by a war monument. Latimer is sitting in a wheelchair, an old soldier with his medals and the watch. He looks to the side as sees Martha pinning a poppy onto the Doctor's jacket. The vicar continues reading. Latimer cries as he holds the watch. When the vicar finishes, the screen goes black.

Everyone watches it, sad smiles on their faces.

"I'm glad he made it through and had a long life." Martha says. They all nod.

"How about a quick toilet break before the next one?" Ten suggests. He knows that once they reach what happens with the Master they aren't going to want a break until it's over. And it would very probably be another double one. They all agree, getting up to use the loo or grab some snacks. Once they are all back, Jack presses the button and the screen bursts into life.
