Chapter 39: The Sound of Drums

In an alleyway, a vortex appears, blowing the rubbish around, followed by the Doctor, Jack and Martha. Martha sags against the wall saying her head. The Doctor says that time travel without a capsule is a killer. They shake themselves off and then head down a street. Jack states they made it 21st century Earth by the looks of it. He calls it lucky. The Doctor tells him that wasn't luck, it was him.

"Well, having seen your driving, I understand why he thinks it could be luck." Rose teases gently. Nine rolls his eyes but gives her a small smile for trying.

There is a flashback to the lab. They desperately try to keep the Futurekind out as the Doctor uses the sonic on Jack's vortex manipulator. He tells Jack to hold still and not to move. Jack tries to tell him it's broken. It hasn't worked for years.

"You didn't have the Doctor though." Sarah-Jane reminds him.

"Or a sonic screwdriver." Ten adds.

"My sonic was better." Jack smirks.

"You wish." Ten tells him.

The Doctor says that's because Jack didn't have him and then tells Martha to grab hold. With everyone holding on to the manipulator, they vanish. Back on Earth, the three of them are sitting down and Jack says that the moral of the story is if you get stuck at the end of the universe get stuck there with an ex-time agent and his vortex manipulator.

"Which was useless without the Doctor to make it work." Rose reminds him.

"So get stuck with me and the Doctor. Solves all the problems." Jack grins.

"That it does." Rose agrees, returning his smile.

Martha points out the Master has the TARDIS so he could be anywhere. The Doctor tells her he is definitely there. She asks who he is as the voice at the end wasn't the professor. Jack realises he must have regenerated. Martha asks what that means.

"At least you don't have to find out while the Doctor actually does it." Rose mutters, mock glaring at Ten who grins sheepishly at her.

"You know now?" He tries and she shakes her head in amusement.

Jack tells her it means he changed his face, voice, body, everything. He is a new man. A beggar is tapping out a rhythm on his tin mug. Martha asks how they will find him and the Doctor tells her he will know him when he sees him as Time Lords always do. Martha starts to say if he could be anyone before releasing they missed the election. A series of public television screens on lamp posts are broadcasting the news. People clap as the new Prime Minister walks down the steps with his wife. It's the Master.

"Hang on, he must have been on Earth for years to become well known enough to be Prime Minister. How did he manage that?" Donna wonders.

"Well he had the TARDIS. Maybe the manipulator was just out by a few years. It was broken." Sarah-Jane suggests.

"Wouldn't be the first time the Doctor was a bit later than planned." Rose smirks. Nine pokes her and pouts. He is desperately trying not to just break down. He doesn't want to see what is going to come. It's too painful. The other Time Lord might have been driven insane but maybe there is some way to help him this time around.

Marth cries that she knew that voice, she's heard it hundreds of times. It's the voice of Harold Saxon. The Doctor watches the screen as he states he is Prime Minister. The photographer tells Saxon to kiss his wife. The Doctor reiterates that the Master is Prime MInister of Great Britain. He watches as the Master kisses his wife and states in astonishment it is the Master and his wife.

"He's been there long enough to get a lot done." Mickey frowns.

"He didn't really strike me as the marrying type." Rose wrinkles her nose.

"He got married?" Nine stares wide-eyed at the screen. "And before me! Er…" He glances nervously at Rose. He hadn't meant to say that out loud.

"You...I mean...did you..?" Rose stutters, not really knowing what to say despite her heart beating double time in her chest.

"If you do." Nine mutters quickly. "I mean...I've thought about it."

"Oi you two! I wanna know what happens." Donna tells them. Both of them look up and realise everyone is watching them. They grin sheepishly.

"Right, yes...sorry about that." Nine mutters, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. Donna snickers but they turn back to the screen.

The Master says that the country has been sick. It needs healing and medicine. He continues that he would go so far as to say that what the country really needs is a Doctor. He smiles directly at the camera.

"I'm going to hazard a guess and say he knows you've arrived." Martha says.

"Yes. The same way I could tell he was definitely there." Ten nods.

The Master and Lucy Saxon are walking along a corridor whilst aides hand him various reports. They arrive outside the Cabinet Room. His wife tells him she is proud of him and he kisses her. Tish arrives and hopes he doesn't mind her asking.

"Oh my god! Tish!" Martha cries out. "What is she doing working for him?" Ten looks down guiltily. He knows the Master targeted Martha's family simply because she travelled with him.

The Master turns to face her as she asks what he wants her to do. He doesn't seem to know her name which Tish eagerly supplies. The Master looks her up down before telling her to stand there and look gorgeous.

"So he doesn't really have a job for her? Is he using her to get to me?" Martha gasps.

"I'm sorry." Ten whispers. Martha doesn't hear him as she buries her face in Mickey's shoulder.

He walks into the cabinet room and says to let the work of government begin. Then he throws the files he had been carrying up into the air.

"I mean...I sorta get that. I'd love to do that with some of my paperwork." Donna mutters.

The Master tells Albert to crack a smile, telling him it's funny. The man forces a chuckle and says it is very funny. Then asks if they could get down to business as they seem to have very little policy.

"If he's got no policy, why would people vote for him?" Jack asks.

"He's always been sort of..hypnotic." Nine tells him. "

Before he can go on, the Master cuts him off saying that he wants to thank all of them. Then he calls them ugly, fat faced, wet, snivelling traitors.

"I think that's pretty much every government." Mickey mutters.

Albert tells him it's very funny but the Master tells him that wasn't funny. He continues that he isn't making himself clear. This is funny, and this is not funny, while pulling faces to match.

Everyone sniggers very slightly.

"He's mental." Donna rolls her eyes.

He calls them all traitors as they left their parties to join him once they saw the vote going his way. He states that this is their reward and then puts on a gas mask.

"He's going to kill them?" Rose asks.

"He has no further need for them I guess." Nine replies, sounding pained.

Albert asks what it is.

"Well I thought that was fairly obvious." Donna rolls her eyes again.

"You know, if you keep doing that, one days your eyes will get stuck." Jack tells her with a grin.

"Whatever." She replies but grins back.

The Master tells him it's a gas mask but his voice is muffled by the mask. Albert can't hear him so the Master lifts the mask and repeats himself. Albert asks why he is wearing it. He says because of the gas and Albert enquiries what he means by that. He says this gas. The conference telephone sets pop up and squirt gas at the Cabinet and officials. Albert calls him insane as he gasps for breath. The Master gives the thumbs up sign as Albert and the rest of his colleagues die, then starts tapping out that famous rhythm on the table.

"Oh my god." Sarah-Jane whispers.

The Doctor, Martha and Jack walk into a flat and Martha announces it as home. The Doctor asks for a computer or laptop and then asks who Jack is phoning. Jack says they are friends of his but there is no reply.

"Friends of yours? I thought you spent all your time running around trying to find the Doctor." Rose laughs.

"Dunno, I said I set myself up by the rift so I guess I got to know some of the locals." Jack wriggles his eyebrows.

Martha fetches her laptop, asking if it is any good. Jack takes it saying he can show the Doctor the Harold Saxon websites as he has been around for ages. Martha comments that it's weird as it's only four days after she met the Doctor.

"It is weird going back weeks later, or months, and finding only a couple of days have passed." Donna says.

The Doctor says they went flying all around the Universe while he was there all the time.

"Yeah but you had to go flying all around the Universe to get him there. If Martha hadn't helped him notice the watch he may never have done so." Sarah-Jane points out. Martha winces but knows the other woman didn't mean it in an accusatory way.

"What would have happened if he never opened the watch? As a human, surely he would die of old age at some point but what happens to the Time Lord consciousness?" Rose asks.

"I don't know." Ten shrugs. "I would guess that he would die and the consciousness would simply fade away."

Martha asks who he is and the Doctor tells her he is a Time Lord.

"I think they got that part." Donna mutters.

"That's all they needed to know." Ten says.

She asks about the rest of it, wondering who would call himself the Master. The Doctor tells her that's all she needs to know and then wants to see about Harold Saxon. Martha wanders away to check her messages. One is from Tish, saying she has a new job. They phoned her up out of the blue and Martha turns the machine off before Tish can say who it's for.

Martha groans.

A woman walks through the government building, brandishing a newspaper article. Tish trails after her saying she isn't allowed in. The woman says that Saxon is a modern Churchill and that Tish must have read it. Tish admits she is new.

"Doesn't stop you reading the paper." Nine frowns. Martha glares at him and he just shrugs.

The woman says that Saxon does like a pretty face but she is here to see Mrs Saxon. Tish reiterates that she can't just go barging in. The woman ignores this and goes into the room. She introduces herself to Lucy. Lucy asks for an hour to herself as its been a hell of a day. Vivien keeps pushing but Lucy says that maybe they should wait.

"The women said no. Sheesh." Mickey frowns.

"She's a reporter." Donna reminds him.

Eventually Lucy gives in and agrees to twenty minutes. Vivien tells Tish to leave them alone, giving her her coat.

"Bit rude." Martha scowls.

Tish protests that she is supposed to sit in. Vivien tells her it's just a profile piece and pushes her out of the room, closing the door in her face.

"Very rude." Mickey agrees.

Vivien turns to Lucy and says she has reason to believe that Lucy is in great danger, as is the whole world.

"I'm going to hazard a guess and say she found something out about Saxon." Rose says, refusing to call him 'the Master'.

"He can't have covered every detail of his backstory. If someone did enough digging I'm sure there would be holes." Nine tells her.

Lucy scoffs but Vivien begs her to hear her out. Lucy asks what she is talking about. Vivien tells her that her husband is not who he claims to be and everything is a lie. Back at Martha's home they watch a video of famous people telling the world to vote Saxon. Jack states that he is the former Minister of Defence, coming to prominence when he shot down the Racnoss.

"So he's been on Earth since then?" Sarah-Jane wonders.

"Still not long enough to make a whole life." Donna points out.

"Hang on, if he was there, as the Time Lord, since the Racnoss how come you didn't sense him before?" Nine asks his future self. Sure there had been a lot of distractions going on but surely not enough for him to fail to notice something that huge.

"You'll find out." Ten tells him.

He tells the Doctor that was nice work. The Doctor thanks him absently. Martha tells the Doctor about Saxon's life. It switches to Vivien telling Lucy that everything about his past was invented. No Harold Saxon attended Cambridge. She continues that the forgery is screaming out but nobody can see it. It is as if he has mesmerised the entire world.

"That's basically what he did." Ten mutters.

"Lucy doesn't seem that surprised." Rose frowns.

"Maybe he told her everything?" Martha suggests.

"Maybe." Rose admits but she isn't convinced.

Lucy says she should leave. Vivien presses on that he became real eighteen months ago just after the fall of Harriet Jones.

"Eighteen months?" Sarah-Jane says thoughtfully.

Vivien says that it was the exact same time they launched the Archangel Network.

"Archangel?" Martha raises an eyebrow.

"Yeah, what about it?" Jack asks.

"Everyone has Archangel." She says.

"That's not going to be good." Donna frowns.

Lucy tells her to stop. Viven keeps pressing, asking what it means that the Cabinet has gone into seclusion. Lucy asks how she should know. Vivien then states that she has research on Lucy, calling her not especially bright but essentially harmless.

Ten can't stop himself scoffing. She certainly wasn't harmless in the end.

Vivien asks if Lucy has seen anything that would cause her to doubt him. Lucy begins to say that she wondered when they first met but he was so good to her father. Then she stops and says that she has made her choice for better or worse.

"I'm going for worse." Jack scowls.

Then she says isn't that right Harry. Saxon is leaning against the wall behind them.

"Oh, that's not good for Vivien." Rose winces.

"Poor woman." Sarah-Jane sighs sadly.

He calls her his faithful companion. Vivien tries to say that she was having a joke with Lucy.

"Yeah, I don't think anyone is buying that." Mickey groans.

"There wasn't really any way out of that." Martha tells him.

He tells her she is right and Harold Saxon doesn't exist. She looks taken aback but asks who he is. He declares that he is the Master and these are his friends. Four spheres pop into existence and orbit his head.

"Er, they don't look like great friends." Jack says quietly.

He asks if she can hear it. Vivien is confused so he says that the drums are coming closer. Thin blades pop out of the spheres. A female voice says that the lady doesn't like them.

"What the hell?" Mickey cries out.

"I don't blame her." Rose says. "I don't like you either."

A male voice calls her a silly lady. Then one calls her a dead lady. She screams. Lucy and the Master run out as the spheres close in on Vivien and she screams. After a few moments, the Master opens the door again but the scream is continuing. He shuts it then opens it once more. Still screaming.

"Bastard." Rose growls softly. The Doctors both close their eyes.

Lucy says she knew everything. Then she says he promised Archangel would be one hundred percent.

"So this Archangel thing is how he controls and hypnotises the whole world." Jack guesses.

"Makes sense if everyone has the network." Nine agrees sadly.

He says ninety nine or ninety eight. Lucy wonders who else might ask questions and wonders how much time they have.

"I wonder how much she knows about his plans then? Cause I doubt they are good." Donna says.

The Master hugs Lucy. He promises everything will end tomorrow morning.

"Oh I do love a good deadline." Martha says sarcastically.

Jack is making them mugs of tea. He says the Master has the TARDIS so could have been living there for decades. The Doctor says no. Jack points out it worked for him. The Doctor tells him he fused the TARDIS coordinates so he can only land in the year one hundred trillion or there. Jack asks about leeway and the Doctor says he could have been there for eighteen months tops.

"Well he definitely got the most out of that leeway." Mickey mutters.

He wonders how he managed all of this. He tells them the Master has always been sort of hypnotic but this is a huge scale. Martha admits she was going to vote for him.

"Definitely regretting that thought now." She scowls. Suddenly she is rather grateful that Vivien women made Tish leave. Her sister would probably have been killed if she had stayed.

The Doctor is surprised and Martha says it was before she met him and she liked Saxon. Jack admits that he did too.

"Urgh." Jack winces. "Bad taste future me."

The Doctor asks what his policy was and what he stood for. Martha tries to think but admits she doesn't know he just sounded good.

Martha and Jack both put their faces in their hands.

"It's not your fault. Either of you." Ten tells them. "It's what he does best."

"Still, I was a Time Agent with some level of psychic training. It shouldn't have fooled me." Jack sighs in frustration.

Martha starts tapping while saying you could trust him. She can't remember what he spoke about but it was good. The Doctor sharply asks what that is. Martha is confused. He points at her hands and asks about the rhythm and what she is going. Martha defensively says that she doesn't know.

"Probably part of the way he gets to people." Nine murmurs.

A fanfare blares out from the laptop and a pop up says Saxon Broadcast All Channels. The Doctor turns on the TV. The Master talks about all the recent alien encounters, showing footage from the Slitheen, Sycorax, Torchwood and Racnoss adventures.

Everyone winces as the footage of the ghosts and the Cybermen is shown.

He continues that the government tells the people nothing. Lucy crosses her fingers. Then he says his purpose today is to tell the citizens of Great Britain he has been contacted with a message from across the stars. An image of one of the spheres is shown. A female voice says they come in peace.

"Yeah, I don't think so." Mickey snorts.

"What are they?" Rose asks.

"No idea." Nine replies, looking troubled.

The voice continues that they bring gifts of technology, wisdom and protection. All they want in return is friendship.

"Except if you don't like them then they kill you. Some friends." Donna scowls.

The Master comments that this is sweet. He says the species has identified itself as the Toclafane.

"What?" Nine asks at the exact same time as his on screen counterpart.

"What are Toclafane?" Rose asks.

"Not real." Nine mutters, more to himself.

"Those were pretty real." Donna points out.

"Maybe they are something he made himself." Nine still seems to be talking to himself. The others turn back to the screen.

He continues that they will appear tomorrow morning and diplomatic relations with a new species will begin. He says that every man, woman and child, then lists a few professions before ending with medical student.

"Oh my god. " Martha gasps.

The Doctor turns to look at Martha, then turns the big old cathode ray tube TV around to see sticks of explosive strapped to the back. He yells out. Then grabs the laptop and his jacket before leaving. They emerge onto the street. The first floor of the converted house explodes with a massive fireball smashing the windows.

"My family!" Martha cries out. Mickey hugs her close.

"The Doctor will protect them." He assures her. Ten winces slightly.

The Doctor asks if they are alright. Jack says he is while Martha pulls out her phone. He asks what she is doing. Martha says that he knows about her so what about her family. The Doctor tells her not to tell them anything. Martha glares at him and says she will do what she likes.

"Checking they are ok is one thing and you definitely should do that. Just don't tell them where you are or anything like that." Sarah-Jane says.

"What if they track Martha's phone though." Jack points out.

"She has to check on her family. There'd be nothing stopping me if it was my mum." Rose tells him.

"They'd be way too scared to do anything to Jackie Tyler." Nine scoffs with a slight smile. "She'd rip their heads off." Rose laughs lightly.

Martha speaks to her mother who asks if she is alright. Martha asks if anyone has been asking about her. A woman sits next to Francine and appears to be listening to the call.

"Oh no." Martha whimpers.

Francine suggests Martha comes round.

"What? Why would she want her daughter near these people?" Donna asks curiously.

"Maybe they don't know about Saxon. Tish seemed fine." Mickey points out.

Martha says she can't. Francine tells her she's been talking to Martha's dad and they might give it another go.

"What?" Martha gasps in disbelief. "Mum always said she would never get back with him in a million years."

"Maybe that's her way of telling you something is wrong, of warning you." Rose offers. Martha nods slowly.

Martha calls her daft and asks since when. Francine tells her to come round.

"Bad idea." Jack mutters.

She continues, telling Martha to come over so they can celebrate. Martha points out her mum said she'd never get back with her dad. Francine says to ask him herself. She hands the phone to Clive. There are two more men in suits standing around. Clive says it's him. Martha asks what he is doing there while looking to the Doctor. He replies that if she comes round then they can explain. Martha asks him to say yes or no and asks if someone is there.

"Oh but he'll be in trouble if he says yes. They can hear what Martha just asked." Donna says worriedly.

There is a pause but Clive says yes. He makes a dash for it while yelling for her to run as he doesn't know who they are. Two men in black grab Clive as he runs along the hallway. Francine yells they are trying to help her.

"Hos is getting her caught by those people helping her?" Rose scowls.

"Martha's mum never did trust me. I think they've been telling her not to trust me the whole time. So I guess she thinks they can help protect Martha from me." Ten tells her softly. "She is trying to protect Martha." Martha looks slightly happier to find that out. She really didn't want to think about her own mum possibly betraying her.

There is yelling and struggling. Francine calls Clive stupid as he yells for Martha to run. She says they need to get Martha away from him. Martha cuts off the call and says they need to help them. The Doctor tells her it's a trap.

"You'd go for Rose's mum!" Martha yells at him bitterly.

"And I go for your family too but you need to know what you could be walking into. Getting captured and taken to him wouldn't be good for you." Ten snaps back.

Martha goes to her Vauxhall Corsa, telling him she doesn't care. The Doctor gets in the front seat, and Jack in the back. The police bundle Clive into a van. Neighbours have come out to watch and he yells at them it is all their fault as they voted for Saxon. Martha speeds down the road, narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic.

"Crashing the car won't help them either." Mickey points out gently, hugging her tightly. Sarah-Jane moves to sit on Martha's other side to offer support as well.

The woman tells Saxon that they have Condition Red on the Jones plan. They will take them all in. Francine yells out she was helping them.

"Not something I'd boast about." Rose mutters angrily.

Martha calls Tish as she drives. While on the phone, two med grab Tish and carry her backwards. She yells for them to get off and for someone else to tell them. The phone is dropped. Martha yells at the Doctor, it is his fault.

"It is not his fault." Rose tells her firmly, trying not to get angry. She knows that when family is in danger it's hard to be rational.

"It is…" Ten begins.

"No!" Rose growls at him. "This is not your fault. You didn't force Martha to come with you. You didn't make Saxon take her family. Heck it was Martha who made Yana interested in the damn watch and helped him become a Time Lord again. It was Jack grabbing the TARDIS that sent it to that time in the first place. Heck it's my fault Jack is the way he is which is why the TARDIS did such a thing. You do your very best to keep us safe." She ranted angrily.

The men are trying to get Francine into the police van when Martha drives up. Francine says she was helping them. Then she screams at Martha to get out of there.

"She changed her tune." Jack mutters quietly.

"She realised they aren't the good guys. She was tricked." Donna whispers to him.

Armed police take up positions. The Doctor tells Martha to reverse. The woman tells the police to take aim and he yells for her to get out now. The woman calls fire. Martha turns the car round as bullets slam into it. Jack calls for her to move it. The rear window is shattered as they drive away.

"Oh my god." Mickey mumbles.

The woman orders Clive and Francine to be taken away. In the car Martha yells that the only place they can go is planet Earth. Great.

"Better that than letting him roam the galaxy with the TARDIS so you can't find him." Jack points out.

"How is that better right now?" Martha glares.

"Because the Doctor had only a few seconds to do anything. It was this or let him go free. Now, if he could go to any time or place then he could go back and stop you being born altogether or something. Kill your parents before you're born." Jack tells her. "It's horrible that your family are in danger but we can stop this from happening."

"We don't blame you for getting upset though. It is terrible to watch even if it hasn't happened yet." Sarah-Jane added gently. Martha nods stiffly.

The Doctor tells her to be careful. Jack tells Martha they need to ditch the car so she should pull over.

Rose sighed, feeling very sorry for Martha. Her family were in trouble, her home had been blown up and now she had to ditch her car, unable to help her family at that moment.

They walk through an underpass. The Doctor tells Martha to come on.

"Give her a break. She's having one hell of a crappy day." Donna scowls at Ten.

"It'll get much worse if they are found." Nine points out.

"Doesn't matter. He could spare a second to make sure she is, well not ok, but coping." Sarah-Jane agrees with Donna.

It is raining, and Martha is making another telephone call. Leo answers. He is in Brighton. Martha tells him to hide at Boxer's and not go home. Martha tells him to trust her. The Master's voice says a nice little game of hide and seek.

"Great. He can listen in on conversations now." Rose groans.

He says he will find her and that it has been a long time since they saw each other. Martha screams at him to let them go. Saxon smiles. Then the Doctor grabs the phone and says he is here. Saxon stops smiling. He pulls a phone out of his pocket and puts it to his ear. They address each other. Saxon says he likes it when the Doctor uses his name.

"Egomaniac." Jack rolls his eyes.

The Doctor points out that he chose it. He calls it a psychiatrist's field day. The Master replies that the Doctor chose his too. The man who makes people better and calls it sanctimonious.

"At least he helps people. That makes him far better than you." Rose glares at the screen.

The Doctor redirects the conversation to the fact he is Prime Minister. The Master is pleased about this. The Doctor asks about the creatures, saying there is no such thing as the Toclafane. The Master asks if he remembers all the fairy tales about the Toclafane when they were kids. Back home. He asks where it is. The Doctor tells him it's gone. He asks how Gallifrey can be gone. The Doctor tells him it burnt and that the Time Lords are dead, along with the Daleks more or less. Then he asks about the Master who tells him the Time Lords resurrected him because they knew he would be the perfect warrior for a Time War.

"Yes, you seem the type." Jack sniffs.

He continues that he was there when the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. He ran away and made himself human because he was scared.

"Not quite the perfect warrior then." Donna scoffs.

"That's not a bad thing." Ten tells her softly.

The Doctor says that he knows. Then the Master asks about all of them, saying the Doctor isn't dead. The Doctor confirms he was the only one who could end it. He says he tried everything.

"Of course you did." Rose smiles, squeezing both Doctor's hands.

The Master asks how it felt to have two almighty civilizations burning.

"Seriously? That's how you react to finding out your whole race is dead?" Donna looks at the screen in astonishment.

The Doctor tells him to stop it. The Master comments that he must have been like God. The Doctor points out he has been alone ever since. But not anymore."

"I'm not alone." Nine says.

"Maybe not, but you thought you were the last of your kind. That's a special kind of loneliness." Jack says with a sympathetic smile.

He continues that they have each other. The Master asks if he is asking him on a date. The Doctor says he could stop this. He offers to fly across the constellations together but not on Earth. The Master tells him it is too late.

"It's never that easy." Sarah-Jane sighs sadly.

The Doctor asks why he says that. The Master asks if he can hear the drumming that never stops inside his head. The Doctor says he could help but the Master continues that it is everywhere. A man lounging nearby starts slapping his thighs in the rhythm.

"Loads of people have been doing it." Mickey frowns.

The Doctor asks what he has done and how he did it. Then he asks what the creatures are. The Master tells him he is on TV. He tells him to stop it and answer him. The Master says he is really on telly. Him and his little band. The broadcast is on a TV in a shop window. They are being called Terrorist Suspects and there are pictures of them.

"Oh fantastic." Nine groans.

"Going on the run then. No technology because he can track us with it." Jack notes with a frustrated sigh.

The Master calls them public enemies and tells the Doctor he has sent Jack's gang the the Himalayas so he won't get any help from them.

"It sounds like he knew when you would arrive." Donna points out.

"He might have figured out the coordinates were locked and that he had a maximum of eighteen months before they showed up." Rose reminds her.

The Master switches the laptop to the CCTV feed of the shopping precinct. He can see them. He tells the Doctor to turn right. The Doctor spots the camera and sonics it. The Master calls him a public menace.

There is some sniggering despite the tension.

"Public enemy number one indeed. He destroys CCTV cameras all the time." Rose chuckles.

"He actually does. He did it in that Big Brother game show thing too." Sarah-Jane recalls with a laugh.

"Twice is not all the time." Nine protests, grateful for any small distraction. He just wants this to be over.

The Master tells him to run. The Doctor states that he has control of everything. Martha asks what they do and Jack points out they have nowhere to do. Martha repeats her question more forcefully and the Doctor says they run. They run through the shopping area.

"I'd be avoiding places with any cameras in." Jack mutters to himself.

The Master watches some TV on his laptop. Other countries seem unhappy that he has taken unilateral action. Then he puts on the Teletubbies.

"Oh my god. A psycho Time Lord is watching the Teletubbies?" Rose can't help but giggle at the utter strangeness she is watching.

A Toclafane appears. He comments on the television in the Teletubbies' stomach. The sphere asks if the machine is ready.

Ten winces at the memory of what had been done to his poor TARDIS.

He says it will be done at eight oh two tomorrow morning. The sphere says they have to escape the coming darkness and terrible cold. The Master tells it eight o'clock tomorrow morning. It should tell its people the world is waiting. The sphere disappears. The Master looks out of the window at the pouring rain.

"Well, the world might be ending but you can count on it to rain in Britain." Rose gives a hollow laugh.

Martha returns with a bag of takeaway food. Jack asks how it was and she replies that she doesn't think anyone saw her. Then she asks if there is anything new. Jack tells her he has tuned his manipulator to follow what Saxon is doing. She snaps that she meant about her family. The Doctor tells her it still says the Jones family were taking in for questioning thought it makes no mention of Leo. Martha hands out chips.

"Well that's something." Martha says anxiously.

"If he hasn't been taken yet, he's probably not going to be." Mickey tries to reassure her. She gives him a faint smile for the attempt.

Martha says he's not as daft as he looks. She stands up and says she is talking about her brother on the run and wonders how that happened. Jack says they are nice chips and the Doctor agrees. Jack and Martha exchange a look then Jack asks how come the ancient society of Time Lords created a psychopath.

"Lovely way of putting that." Donna snorts.

"Yeah, because we haven't called him that in here." Jack points out.

"True, but there the Doctor has only just learnt he's not the last surviving member of his entire species but that's not actually a good thing. You could at least phrase it a little nicer." Sarah-Jane points out. Both Doctors look pained.

Martha asks what he is to the Doctor.

"Why is that relevant?" Rose asks, although she rather wanted to know that as well.

The Doctor tells them he was a friend at first. Martha admits she thought he was his secret brother.

They all turn to look at Martha.

"What, he did tell me he had a brother once." She defends herself.

He tells her she has been watching too much TV. Jack says the legends made Gallifrey sound so perfect.

"Legends aren't particularly trustworthy." Nine sighs sadly.

The Doctor says it was perfect to look at maybe. Then he describes it and tells them about the children who looked into the Untempered Schism and how some would be inspired, some would run away and some would go mad. As he spoke the screen showed the young Master looking into the Untempered Schism.

"Eight years old." Breathes Jack.

"So young." Sarah-Jane frowns.

Martha asks about him. He tells her he ran away and never stopped. Jack's bracelet beeps and he says it's an encrypted channel with files attached but he doesn't recognise it. The Doctor tells him to patch it through to the laptop. Jack says there is something he hasn't told the Doctor and the Torchwood logo appears on the laptop.

"You're involved with Torchwood?" Rose asks in a quiet voice.

"No idea." Jack shrugs, looking rather upset himself.

The Doctor stands over Jack and says he works for Torchwood.

"You work for them?" Nine scowls.

"Hey, I haven't done this yet but I know there is no way I'd work for the same people who created Canary Wharf. They must have rebuilt." Jack tells him firmly.

Jack says it has changed and there are only half a dozen of them now. The Doctor angrily points out everything they did and asks if he is now part of it. Jack tells him the old regime was destroyed at Canary Wharf. He rebuilt it and changed it in the Doctor's honour.

"Yes, well don't." Nine tells him. "By all means change the damn thing but do not ever do anything with Torchwood in my honour." Jack nods.

The Doctor hits play. Vivien appears on screen saying this file will be emailed if she isn't back at her desk by twenty two hundred.

"Smart woman." Sarah-Jane says approvingly.

She continues that the Saxon files are attached and they should take a look at the Archangel document as this is when everything started. The Doctor asks what Archangel Network is. Martha says she has it. Everyone has it. Jack explains it is a mobile phone network that has gone worldwide. Other networks are carried by Archangel.

"Wonderful." Mickey groans.

The Doctor sonics Martha's phone and says it is in the phones. Then he says hold on. He taps Martha's phone against the table and it starts beeping in the rhythm. He says that rhythm is everywhere, ticking away in the subconscious.

"That's creepy." Martha mutters.

"Definitely." Mickey agrees.

Martha asks if it is mind control. He tells her it is far subtler than that. Any stronger and people would question it. Contained in the rhythm in layers of code are messages like vote Saxon. That is how he hid himself from the Doctor, the code cancelled him out.

"Clever." Nine admits reluctantly.

Jack asks if there is any way to stop it. The Doctor says not from there but now they know how he is doing it. Martha says they can fight back and he says yes. Then they get to work. The Doctor takes parts of the phone and the laptop, and welds them sonically to their Tardis keys.

Rose giggles.

"What?" Nine ask her.

"I've just realised Jack is wearing a belt and suspenders. You really can't keep your pants on can you?" She asks. Everyone does a double take and then laughs. Jack smirks at Rose.

The Doctor puts the three keys on the table. He says they are three pieces of the TARDIS with low level perception properties because the TARDIS is designed to blend in. The Archangel Network has a second low level signal. He has welded the key to the network. He tells Martha to look at him and confirm she can see him which she does. He asks about now. He puts the string with his key on it around his neck, and Martha finds it difficult to look straight at him. Jack chuckles and the Doctor says he is here. Martha states it is like she knows he is there but doesn't want to know.

"That's weird." Rose frowns.

"Cool though." Donna says.

He takes the string off and is back to normal. He says it doesn't make them invisible just unnoticed. Like when you fancy someone and they don't even know you exist.

"Oh my god." Rose facepalms.

"You're such an idiot spaceman." Donna rolls her eyes.

"I can't believe you actually said that to Martha. How oblivious can you actually be?" Mickey glares at Ten who winces slightly.

"Sorry, Martha."

He says to come on and runs off. Martha glances at Jack. Jack says her too.

"Jack?" Ten frowns at his friend.

"Yeah?"

"You fancy me?"

"You really are stupid for someone supposed to be so clever." Jack tells him.

"No offence but given that you flirt with anything that has a pulse it is a little hard to tell if you have a crush or are just being yourself." Rose tells him. Jack shrugs.

"Had a crush. Don't anymore." Is all he says. Donna lets out a silent sigh of relief.

They walk down a path. The Doctor tells them not to shout or run. If they draw attention to themselves the spell is broken. Jack says like ghosts and he agrees. With the keys around their necks, they have to step aside to prevent people from walking into them.

"Nice. Just hope you don't do anything to draw attention to yourselves." Rose sighs. The Doctor's plans don't usually go smoothly.

The news shows Air Force One has arrived in Britain. The Master salutes as the President walks up to him. The President tells him the British Army will stand down as UNIT has control of the operation. They talk about how Saxon ignored first contact policy but Saxon clearly isn't taking the conversation seriously. The Doctor, Jack and Martha are watching a little way away. The Master asks if the USA is completely in charge and the President says yes as Britain elected an ass.

Everyone except the Doctors sniggers quietly.

It is agreed they will meet on the Valiant. It is also agreed that it will still be televised. The President leaves. Saxon tells Lucy he is the last President of America. Lucy leaves with her security guard. The Master turns and looks in the rough direction of the trio.

"I'm getting a horrible feeling he does know you're there." Sarah-Jane frowns.

"Me too." Rose agrees.

A Police van arrives and the Master runs over to it. Clive and Francine are bundled out. The Master is pleased to see them. Martha's parents are fighting the police. Martha whispers oh my god and the Doctor tells her not to move.

"You want me to not help them?" Martha glares at him.

"If you try and help them now you will get caught." Nine tells her in the most gentle tone he has used when speaking to her. "It won't help them to know you have been captured too." Martha glances at him before crying out in frustration but making no further protest.

She tries to argue but he tells her don't. Clive and Francine are pushed into a Range Rover Vogue. Martha mutters that she is going to kill him. Jack suggests he use his perception filter to walk up and snap his neck. The Doctor glares scathingly and states that it sounds like Torchwood.

"Oi" Jack protests. "It's not like he is a good guy. He's clearly insane and probably going to hurt an awful lot of people. You had your chance and he rejected the chance to go off into the stars with you."

"I still had to try." Ten tells him firmly.

Jack states it is still a good plan. The Doctor replies that as a Time Lord, he is the Doctor's responsibility. He is there to save him not kill him.

"Some people can't be saved, Doctor." Sarah-Jane says gently.

"They should still be given the opportunity." Nine argues. She looks at him sympathetically. It seems glaring obvious the Master does not wish to be saved.

Jack looks up the Valiant and discovers it is a UNIT ship. Martha asks how they get on board. The Doctor asks if it works as a teleport. Jack agrees it does since he revamped it.

"Cool." Jack grins.

All hands on Jack's bracelet. They all land quite heavily, complaining loudly. Jack comments he has had worse nights. Then welcomes them to the Valiant. Martha realises it is dawn. She looks out a window and asks where the sea is.

"I'm guessing it's a spaceship not a sea ship." Nine mutters.

"Brilliant." Rose sighs. "You don't have the TARDIS to escape from there."

"No but the TARDIS might be on there." Nine suggests.

Jack announces it is a ship for the twenty first century, protecting the skies of planet Earth. A tannoy announces that Europe is online. Lucy and the Master arrive in the lift. The actual ship's bridge is on a raised area at the far end of the large area. Cameras are stationed at the side and there is a big glass conference table and chairs in the middle. One of the pieces of equipment on the bridge is a large circular item with engraving like the fob watch. The President is talking to someone as the Master comes over asking if there is anything he could do. He offers to make tea.

"You could shut up." Donna says quietly. Jack snickers.

Then he suggests he should make grits before asking what they are. The President tells him to just sit. The Master and Lucy walk away as he calls him a misery guts. He asks Lucy what she thinks and she says it's beautiful. He tells her he helped design the place as they sit at the table. The trio run down a corridor when the Doctor suddenly stops. Jack tells him there is no time for sightseeing.

"Somehow I doubt that is why he stopped." Rose rolls her eyes.

He asks if they can hear it. Jack asks to hear what. Martha reminds him her family is on board. The Doctor suddenly grins and says brilliant. Then he takes off in a different direction to the one they had been going in. The other two follow and they run down a gangway. The Doctor flings some doors open and says at last. Martha cheers as they see the TARDIS.

"That's a little too easy." Mickey says suspiciously.

"Easy?" Martha questions. He nods.

"Something that important and not a single guard in sight." He points out.

"Well if nobody knows it's there then no guards would be needed." Sarah-Jane argues.

Jack asks what it is doing on the Valiant.

"Also a valid question." Donna states.

They go inside and it's red. Jack asks what the hell he has done.

"What did he do to my ship?" Nine growls angrily.

"The poor girl." Rose sighs sadly.

The Doctor tells him not to touch it and Jack assures him he isn't going to. Martha asks what he has done to it as it sounds like it's sick.

"She is not an it." Nine scowls. "And he better not have done what I think he's done."

The Doctor looks at the console and says it can't be. Martha asks what it is. He explains he cannibalised the TARDIS.

"Damn him!" Nine snarls.

"That doesn't sound good in any way. How do you cannibalise a TARDIS?" Mickey wonders quietly.

Jack asks if it is what he thinks it is. The Doctor confirms it is a paradox machine.

Rose wants to ask what that is but both Doctors look so stressed and sad she can't bring herself to keep commenting. The sooner they get through this, the sooner they can take a break and comfort them properly.

On the deck. Everyone prepares for the arrival of the Toclafane. The Doctor taps a gauge on the metal mesh around the time console. He works out it will activate at two minutes past eight. Martha asks what it is for and Jack cuts in to ask if he can stop it.

"Too dangerous in such a short amount of time." Nine states in a dejected voice.

The Doctor says not until he knows what it is doing as touching the wrong bit could blow up the solar system.

"Yeah, best avoid that." Mickey mutters to himself and Martha.

Martha says they need to get to the Master. Jack wonders how they are going to stop him. The Doctor tells them he has a way. Then asks if he didn't mention it. Martha glares at him.

"No, you forgot to mention that important detail." Jack rolls his eyes.

The television is on whilst school children have breakfast in the canteen, workers are in a cafe, mothers are feeding their children. The news announces they will go live in thirty seconds. On the deck, the President starts making a speech. The Doctor, Martha and Jack enter quietly. He keeps talking as Jack asks about the plan. The Doctor explains that he needs to get the key around the Master's neck to cancel out his perception.

"Except, I bet he knows you're there." Rose groans.

"Hopefully he'll be distracted by the Toclafane arrival." Donna suggests without much hope.

The problem is going unnoticed when everyone is on high alert. He tells Jack that if they stop him then he has a key. Martha says she will get him, glaring at Saxon. The Toclafane arrive.

"He looks far too happy." Sarah-Jane mutters.

The President introduces himself. A male voice says he is not the Master. A female voice says they like mister Master and they don't like him.

"Oh no. The last person they didn't like was killed." Mickey states.

"That's probably what he is hoping for." Donna tells him.

The President says he can be master if they so wish. He will accept mastery over them if that is God's will. The Doctor edges closer to the Master.

"Yeah, that's not what they meant, mate." Mickey winces.

The make sphere says the man is stupid and the other male states Master is their friend. The female asks where the Master is. He stands up saying it is him. He moves to the front, saying he has this effect, asking if it is the smile or the aftershave. The president asks what he is talking about.

"You're unlikely to reach him unnoticed now." Donna groans.

The Master declares he is in control and tells them to kill him. A sphere points its weapon at the President and blasts him into little pieces.

"Oh my god." Rose whispers.

General consternation and guns drawn. The Master laughs and applauds. He calls for the guards who tell everybody not to move. The Doctor takes off his key and tries to run forward. Two men in black grab him.

"Oh wonderful." Sarah-Jane sighs.

The Master says they meet at last Doctor. Then laughs and says he loves saying that. The Doctor yells at him to stop it. The Master comments that a perception filter isn't going to work on him. He calls Jack and Martha the girlie and the freak before saying he isn't sure which is which.

"Oh yes, I'm so insulted." Jack scoffs.

Jack runs forward. The Master zaps him with his screwdriver.

"Jack!" Donna and Rose cry out.

He says it is a laser screwdriver, asking who would have sonic. He adds that the good thing is Jack isn't dead for long so he gets to kill him again.

"Oh god. Jack!" Rose whimpers.

"I'll rip him apart myself." Donna scowls furiously at the screen.

"I'll help." Rose agrees with her own scowl.

The Doctor begs him to stop and look at what he is doing. He says that if he could just see himself.

"Sadly, I think he can see himself perfectly well." Jack mutters, too quietly for the Doctors to hear. Donna squeezes his arm.

The Master addresses the camera saying he has a little bit of personal business and will be back in a minute. He tells the guards to let him go. They throw the Doctor to the floor. The Doctor offers to help with the sound in his head. The Master wonders how to shut him up.

"Don't we all." Donna mutters to Jack, trying to make him smile. It works briefly.

The Master sits down and recalls Professor Lazarus. Then he reveals he has the Doctor's hand, giving him access to the Doctor's biological code. He says that if Lazarus could make himself younger, then what happens if he reverses it by another hundred years.

"He'll get older but surely a hundred years won't matter to the Doctor." Rose frowns.

"Our bodies can die of old age." Nine tells her. "If he makes my physical body one hundred years older, it'll definitely not be good."

The Master aims his screwdriver at the Doctor, who goes into rapid convulsions.

"Oh my god! Doctor!" Rose cries out. Both Doctors cringe.

Jack revives with Martha next to him. He tells her to teleport. She says she can't. Jack points out they can't stop him and she should get out of here.

"She should take you with her. You heard him, well you didn't I suppose, but he plans on killing you again. Probably over and over." Donna looks at Jack fearfully.

Lucy is looking very unhappy with all this. The Master stops zapping the Doctor, who now looks at least a hundred years old.

"Woah." Mickey whispers, wide-eyed.

Martha moves to the Doctor saying she has him. The Master tells Martha they have flown them all the way from prison. A doop opens and her family are led in.

"Oh god!" Martha mumbles, covering her mouth. Mickey tightens his arms around her.

Martha calls for her mum. Francine says she is sorry. The Doctor whispers who are the Toclafane. The Master crouches down pretending not to have heard him. He repeats the question. The Master tells him that if he knew, then his hearts would break. A male sphere asks if it is time. The female asks if the machine is singing. The Master notes it is two minutes past. He addresses the camera once more and says it is the end of the world Then he loudly yells that here come the drums. Rogue Trader's song 'Voodoo Child' starts playing as the paradox machine in the Tardis activates.

"His taste in music is terrible." Mickey notes to himself.

A tear appears in the sky above the Valiant and thousands of spheres pour out. The Master and Lucy watch. He asks how many she thinks. She says she doesn't know and he tells her there are six billion.

Jack and Nine stiffen.

"Please no?" Nine whispers. Ten doesn't answer.

The spheres head to the population centres and open fire. He orders them to remove one tenth of the population. Some spheres burst into a house and a girl screams. Martha and the Doctor look at each other and then she stands up, holding Jack's vortex manipulator. The Valiant begin receiving calls saying that they are being slaughtered and requesting help. Martha teleports away.

"You didn't even take Jack?" Donna yells at her.

"It would have been too risky." Ten tries to placate her.

"They were all busy with the attack. She spent long enough looking around at everyone. She could easily have moved to Jack!" Donna argues angrily. Jack hugs her and she subsides, still muttering to herself.

The Doctor and Jack look at each other, and the Doctor nods. The Doctor stares up at the Master. Martha rolls down a hill. Still wearing the Tardis key, Martha watches London burning. She looks up at the Valiant and declares she is coming back.

"I hope you have a plan." Sarah-Jane says.

"She does." Ten tells her.

The Master and Lucy hold up the ancient Doctor so he can watch the slaughter.

Nine closes his eyes, tears trickling down his face. Rose snuggles as close as she can. He buries his face in her hair.

The Master says that the human race fell and Earth was no more. As he looked down on his dominion as Master of all, he thought it was good. The screen goes black.

"It's a three part one. I thought the two part ones were bad." Sarah-Jane groans. Jack puts the next one on immediately.
