I was sitting on the walls around the Castillo de San Marco as the sun came up. I had gone walking around the city when I couldn't sleep, and stopped to watch the sunrise. I hadn't heard from Dave in a few days, the club was doing even better, and I had a feeling that life was turning around. I hoped down into the moat to walk back around and came face to face with Dave... so much for that good feeling. I started to go around him, but he stopped me.
"I just want to talk." he said and I sighed.
"And, I don't." I said as I started to go around him again, but he stopped me again.
"Dave, I literally have nothing else to say, and absolutely no patience to hear anything you want to say. You left me... that's it. I'm sorry that you now feel as if you fucked up, but that's your problem not mine. I moved on... so please, do the same." I said and he shook his head.
"No, I'm not ready to." he said and I had to laugh at that because it really didn't work that way.
"It doesn't work that way." I said and this time I successfully moved around him as I could hear him walking behind me. I went up the steps to get out of the moat and onto the seawall as he continued to follow me. I had half a mind to push him into the inlet. I finally turned around and looked at him.
"Please stop following me." I said and he pulled me to sit on a bench next to us.
"Look, I know that I fucked up, but at one time we did love each other. I know that hasn't gone away." he said.
"Yes, it has. You left me for my own employee. You made me look stupid because we had already sent out wedding invitation. You played it off as if it was mutual. You are the problem, and you are the sole reason I don't love you anymore." I said and he pursed his lips. I was glad there wasn't a lot of people out right now because I feel as if Dave could genuinely cause a scene at any moment.
"Jodi... I am sorry. I still love you. I know that I fucked up. What more do you want?" he asked me and I sighed. He really wasn't getting that I didn't want him around.
"Dave, I am glad that you are sorry, but I in no way want you around right now." I said and he sighed.
"I will win you back." he said and I stopped up.
"Good fucking luck with that one." I said and he chuckled.
"See you tonight." he said and I stopped to look at him.
"You were invited as well?" I asked him and he nodded.
"I am still an important citizen in this town." he said and I growled before walking back into the town. I wasn't going to take anyone with me tonight, but now I needed someone fast. I went into the club and posted a note: I need someone for a few hours tonight to help me. Must wear a tux, clean up, and be willing to make small talk with people. Let me know ASAP- Jodi
I went back to my house, fed the cat, made some coffee, and sat on the porch wondering why I had ever agreed to talk to Dave in the first place. I was sitting outside as it got hotter, and I saw my gate open. I was happy to see Dexter walk through the gate. He was early to work, but I knew that they were testing the security system today and putting outdoor cameras around my house.
"Good morning." I said as he waved at me.
"Morning." he said back as he stopped at the stairs.
"Coffee is inside if you want some." I said and he nodded before slipping inside. He came back out and sat down with me.
"I have a tux." he said as he sipped his coffee and I looked at him surprised.
"You will go with me tonight?" I asked him because for some reason he was the last person I expected. I knew that we had hung out that night, and were friendly; but I didn't expect him to want to go.
"I want to." he said and and I smiled at him.
"Thank you. Can you be here in the tux at 5:45pm?" I asked him and he nodded.
"Thank you, and can you take that note down?" I asked him and he chuckled.
"I already did." he said and I was surprised, but hid my smirk behind my coffee cup. Dexter continued to surprise me.
We talked about different things as the security people came to hang up cameras, and he went back to the club with them when they finished. I had hoped it would have been Dexter or Cash to go with me tonight, but I didn't actually expect it to be Dexter. Cash was usually my drag along date.
Later that night:
I looked in the mirror and realized this was as good as it was going to get. I had gotten my nails and hair done so I didn't have to do them myself. I had one evening gown and it was black because that went with any occasion. I was in a plunging side slit gown that showed off just enough without looking slutty. I had my small black clutch with me, and black pointed toe pumps on. I sighed as there was a knock at the door. I hated doing these things, but I had promised my dad that I would continue to be present in the town he loved so much. I glanced at the clock and it was 5:45 so at least he was on time. The car would be picking us up in a few minutes. The event was at Flagler college in the old Ponce De Leon Hotel.
I opened the door to see Dexter in a traditional tuxedo. He was holding a small bouquet of pink roses.
"Thank you." I said as he handed them to me.
"You look beautiful." he said and I smiled at him. I put the roses in water, grabbed my clutch, and took his arm as I locked up. I was glad that Dexter was with me, because I had a feeling that he would be able to handle Dave.
