Thanks for reviewing! You all are awesome!
I wasn't sure why I was nervous... maybe it was that Dave would be there, or that Dexter was with me. I was so anxious and nervous as we made the few minute ride to the college. I didn't live far from it, but I knew that walking through St. Augustine in these clothes would get some looks as well as be sweaty... I didn't want to add being sweaty to my list of issues I was currently having.
"You are ok... I'm right here." Dexter whispered to me as we got out and I smiled at him as he offered me his arm. I took it as I gave them our invitation and we headed inside. The hall was beautiful with marble and beautiful fresco works above you to compliment the dome. I had been here many times and it was always beautiful. We headed up the marble stairs and into old dining room that the college used now. They had bars set up, food, and people were mingling. I scanned the room, but didn't see Dave. I was glad for that. I was immediately greeted by some old family friends as Dexter excused himself to get us drinks.
He came back and handed me one as I was talking to my aunt. I didn't realize she was going to be here tonight. I was actually glad to see her.
"Jodi, who is this?" she asked me as Dexter handed me a flute of something.
"This is Dexter." I said and he kissed the back of her hand. I was so thankful that he knew how to act. She giggled and smirked at me as he let go of her hand.
"I didn't realize you had moved on from Dave." she said and I nodded.
"We prefer to be private." Dexter said for me as he kissed my temple. He was laying it on thick and I was just praying it looked convincing.
"Probably for the best since Dave was about the most open person in the world... even when he did what he did." she said and I nodded. Dave wasn't exactly quiet about cheating on me, breaking off the engagement, and then moving on with my former employee.
"Dexter, what do you do?" she asked me and I held my breath because I had no idea what he was about to say.
"Private security... it pays better." he said and I couldn't help but chuckle.
"Ah, very nice. How did you meet?" my aunt asked us and I remembered how nosy she could be right about now. She was going to ask every detail.
"Friends. She is friends with my best friend and his wife." he said and I nodded in agreement as she smiled.
"Ah, he did have the guts to show his face." my aunt said and I turned to see Dave walking in by himself.
"With everything that has been said about him you would think he would learn to just go away." my aunt said and I couldn't help but smile. Dave was a rich businessman, and that is the only reason people put up with him. He owns a few places in the town and then some in Jacksonville. He was put up with only because he had money.
"Just avoid him dear." she said and I nodded as someone pulled her away. Dexter took my glass and sat in on a tray before taking my hand. He pulled me over to the small dance floor and we blended in with the other couples.
"Thank you." I said and he chuckled as he pulled me close. We were dancing as he held me close. I kept glancing around and seeing Dave talking to people, but always looking in my direction. I just wanted him to go away. We managed to speak to the people we needed to, have a few drinks, I learned Dexter could dance, and then we were going to slip out. I had bid on a silent auction, but I didn't care if I won.
"Are you ready to leave?" I asked him and he nodded as he took my hand. We were leaving down the marble stairs when I saw Dave standing at the bottom on his phone. I was hoping that we could just slip past, but that wasn't my luck.
"I see you paid someone to put up with you for the night." he said as we walked past.
"And I see that you can't afford anyone here anymore." I said and I saw Dexter smirk at that comment.
"You should know that she is a whore." Dave said and Dexter stopped. I looked up at him and he kissed my temple before walking back to Dave.
"You have something to say?" he asked him and Dexter stood there. Dave was just taller than Dexter, but Dexter was just as built. Dexter stared down Dave, and Dave finally took a step back.
"Leave her alone or the only thing that will be paid is medical bills." Dexter said and Dave looked surprised before Dexter turned to walk away. Dave went to sucker punch Dexter, but he sensed it. He elbowed Dave in the nose, and sent him to his knee. Dexter didn't even pause as he walked back over, offered me his arm, and escorted me back outside.
We were walking past the fountain and I glanced back to see Dave slowly getting up. I had to smirk. We got outside the gate and Dexter looked at me. I couldn't help myself as I pulled his lips to mine. I had people standing up to Dave for me, but nothing like Dexter had just done. I quickly realized what I had just done and went to pull away, but his hand on my lower back held me in place as he pulled away.
"I'm sorry... I didn't..." I was saying when he cut me off with another kiss. He slowly pulled away and looked at me.
"Don't be... let's go grab dinner." he said and I nodded. He hailed down a taxi and had them to take us to San Sebastian Winery. I hadn't been there in a long time, and I was glad to go again.
"I hope that we don't need reservations." I said and he nodded as he laced my fingers with his. The upstairs restaurant looked very busy. The man walked up to us and looked surprised to see us.
"Dexter, I am glad to see you again." he said and he nodded at him. He took us to a private table in the corner. I got ready to ask him how he knew them when they brought us a bottle of white wine.
"I have your favorite bottle." the man said as he showed us and poured us a glass.
"Can you please bring us a charcuterie board and the beef carpaccio?" he asked him and the man nodded before leaving us in our private area. I glanced around to see the marsh area, the city lit up, and the band playing softly at the other side of the dining area.
"I'm so confused." I admitted finally when he looked at me.
"My family owns this place." he said and I was surprised. I had to admit in our conversations that was something he never brought up.
"So... you knew my dad?" I finally asked him and he nodded as he sipped his wine. My dad was best friends with the family that owned the winery, but somehow I don't remember Dexter.
"And, I met you long before I worked for you." he admitted and I was floored. I had met Dexter before?
