Chapter 1: Where they ended up

Flashback

July 4, 2010

5 Years earlier

As Grissom was standing there in complete shock with his heart still racing after a few beats, Sara shook her head with even more tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry, maybe I should have waited until I knew with proof, after I had tak..."

Grissom finally cuts her off, able to talk when he saw how distressed she looked. "Honey, when I said I want to be here for you for every step, I meant it, even just the 'feeling' one."

Now with more emotion, she continued. "But the last thing I want to do is get your hopes up, I don't want to see your disappointed face if it turns out to be just a hopeful fee..."

He cuts her off with a more comforting tone. "And I want to be there for you while we wait for the results. I want to be there for you when the results are revealed, and regardless of what it says, we'll deal with it together, ok?" She nodded with a sniffle before he does a little smirk to break the slight tension. "Besides, I learned a long time ago to never doubt the 'Sara' feeling. How many times did we solve a case by going with your feeling that led us to the proof we needed."

Sara took a breath with a nod, starting to feel a little more at ease, which he had always had that effect on her. "I'll admit more often times than not."

He ran his thumb up and down her cheek. "Alright then, let's just take this one step at a time, here. What's next? Buying the test, right?"

While Grissom was acting all cool and collected on the outside, his insides were all over the place, he wanted his wife's feeling to be true more than anything. But he also didn't want to show it just in case the feeling wasn't correct.

He mentally shook it off, trying to be in the moment while seeing Sara bite her lip before replying softly. "I already have some."

The moment Grissom heard that, thoughts started going through his head before he could even stop them.

Had she had this feeling before and checked without him? Where the results all negative and she had to deal with that sad feeling alone? And that last thought just about killed him inside, what if there was a positive sign and she had lost the...

Sara could see all the emotions on his face and in his eyes and could see the wheels turning, only imagining what he must be thinking, which from the way he was looking only got more distressing, so she cuts him off while cupping his cheek. "It's not what you're thinking, I bought them just in case. But like I said, I never had this feeling so strong before." He let out a breath as the weight was lifted from his shoulders while Sara continued, once again with emotion. "You really think I could have hidden that, regardless of the results, from you."

He shook his head as he placed his hand on top of hers. "Of course not, I'm sorry, the thoughts got in there before I could stop them."

After reassuring him, they agreed to go take a test, but before they headed back to the house, Hank finally got their attention, not aware of the potential life changing news, so Sara smiled and threw the ball one more time, which didn't go very far but he still went after it while Sara and Grissom walked towards the house.

They were halfway there when Grissom's voice was heard by Hank. "Hank, come on boy, let's go inside."

When they made it to the deck of the house, Sara went inside to do her business in the bathroom while Grissom wiped Hank off the best he could with a towel, then by the time she walked out of the bathroom, he was in the room already pacing. They smiled at one another while he held out his hand and she gave him a short nod as she walked up to him. "All we have to do is wait."

He nodded in return while bringing her in his arms, then after a moment passed in silence, she spoke again. "Talk to me, try and keep me distracted."

"Ok." He paused for a second, trying to think of something to say, then remembered the phone call he had received before everything that just happened. "Well, I guess I could tell you that Juan called."

They pull back and she asked with a raised eyebrow. "Juan Rodriguez?"

It wasn't like they knew many Juans, but just to be sure, she had to ask.

He nodded before she asked again. "And what did he want?"

"He actually offered us a job being advocates for the wildlife in the Pacific." He then smirked at the end. "He said we could even have our own boat."

She spoke again while walking towards the bed. "And what did you tell him?"

"Well obviously that I would have to speak to you about it."

"I see." She then took a breath before continuing. "I'll admit it does sound interesting, and something I could get into, but what do you think?"

He took a breath while walking towards the bed so he could sit down next to her. "You're right it did sound interesting, and I can't lie and tell you I'm not a little intrigued by it." He cupped her cheek as he continued. "But I did mean what I said when we talked about you leaving Vegas, I did miss spending time with my mom." He then finished with emotion as he moved his hand from her cheek to her stomach. "And if we do have a little one growing in there, I can't take away the opportunity my mom would have to spend time with her grandchild, because while she never hounded me or criticized me of never having children, I know she's always wanted to have a grandchild. I could see it in her eyes whenever she talked about how her friend's grandchildren were."

Wanting to make her husband happy, and honestly if she was pregnant she couldn't imagine her child not having a good relationship with a least one of his/her grandma's, she nodded while placing her hand on top of his while replying. "Ok, I'll tell you what, if the test is positive, we'll build a life close to your mom so she can have that relationship with her grandchild, I'm sure we can find something to do, and if it turns out I'm not pregnant, then we'll get in contact with Juan to talk more about the job offer and see how we feel then."

"Ok, if you're really ok with that."

She ran her hand up and down the back of his hand. "I am."

He smiled with a nod. "Sounds like a plan."

A few moments later, Sara looked at the clock on the nightstand before looking at her husband again. "It's time, are you ready?"

He took a breath and nodded, suddenly feeling nervous, knowing if the test is positive it will change their lives in a way they've been hoping for what felt like forever, and if it was negative, they'll both have to find a way to move on from that disappointment and try again.

She stood up first and took his hand. "We'll get through this together, not matter what the test says."

He stood up with a nod. "We will." He then cupped her cheek and whispered. "I love you, no matter what."

"I love you too."

They kissed softly before walking towards the bathroom hand in hand.

End of flashback

Late June, 2015

Los Angeles, California

Sara Grissom was sitting in her new office that she just got today after being promoted to Assistant Supervisor for the Los Angeles CSI crime lab.

It was just about lunch time, and she wanted to get some paperwork done, but hadn't been able to concentrate because she was so happy, the happiest she's ever been in her life.

Now she probably would have already been a supervisor if her career hadn't taken a backseat the last five years, but it was for a very good, perfect in her opinion, reason for that.

As she moved her eyes to one of the two framed photos sitting on her desk, she hears a knock on the door.

She cleared her throat before saying. "Come in."

The door opened and Sara's face beamed, seeing her husband standing there. "Hi."

Grissom stepped just inside the office and looked around her new surroundings while replying. "I hope we aren't too early, I wanted to check out your new office." When he looked into her eyes, he spoke with love. "It looks good and so does the new sign painted on your door. So, how does it feel, assistant supervisor Grissom?"

Sara gets up from her seat and walks toward her husband, speaking with a smile. "It feels amazing, and I'm not just talking about my office or professional life, it's my life in general." Then she frowned a little as she asked. "Hold on now, you did say 'we', so where is my..."

She was cut off when she heard a little boy's voice as he was running down the hall. "Mommy, look what I got!"

The 4-year-old boy, who was the spitting image of his father, stopped in the doorway holding two small suckers on his hand with a beaming smile, causing Sara to smile in return as she kneeled down and held out her arms. "There's my little monster, come here William."

William Arthur Grissom was named after his grandpa (Grissom's dad), and his father, which had been suggested by Grissom's mom.

The little boy nodded and ran to his mom before gentle wrapping his arms around her neck.

"I've missed you mommy."

Sara sighed as she held her son close to her, feeling that protectiveness over him, along with a love that she never felt before, a love that came over her the second she found out she was pregnant.

Flashback

5 years earlier

By the time they reached the bathroom they were already a nervous wreck, so before they moved any farther, they looked at one another with a smile before Grissom spoke in a calming tone. "OK, let's just take a few breaths before we pass out here."

She nodded as they tried calming themselves, then Sara spoke softly. "I haven't been this nervous since our first date."

Grissom looked at her a little surprised. "Really? You never showed it from what I remember."

She nodded with a chuckle. "Oh, I really was. I knew that would be my last first date."

Grissom looked at her shyly. "And if had been bad?"

"I highly doubted it would have been bad, but if it had been, I would have insisted that we keep trying, because." She paused for a moment to cup his cheek as she continued softly. "There was no way I was letting you get away so fast, not when we were finally getting somewhere." They kiss softly before they pulled back and she smirked. "But thank God it wasn't."

They chuckled, then after one more soft kiss, he took a breath before speaking again. "Alright, we better check."

After she nodded, they squeezed each other's hands before walking towards the bathroom counter, and the minute they saw the 'plus' sign both of them gasped with tears in their eyes as they looked at one another, then he cupped her cheek as spoke with emotion. "Honey, we are having a baby."

Sara's knees just about buckled, but Grissom was fast and wrapped his other arm around her waist as she started to cry in joy while repeating 'oh my god we are having a baby'

Eventually they moved back into the bedroom and sat on the bed, still holding one another, telling the other that they loved one another.

When they were finally calmed down enough, he kissed her forehead and whispered. "Now the next step is to call a doctor and set up an appointment."

She nodded in agreement before asking softly. "Can you call, I don't think I can form the words right now."

They pull back and he cups her cheek with a smile. "You got it dear." He then kissed her forehead again before leaving the bedroom and grabbing his phone from the last place he left it at, which was the railing on the deck.

Sara just sat there stunned with joy as her hand went to her stomach. Whatever feeling she imagined she would have the moment she found out the test results, didn't compare to the reality of it, and the best part was the feeling that didn't show up was scared or afraid, it felt right, it felt perfect, even.

As she sighed in content, Hank walked into the room, walked up to her, sat down in front of her, then he tilted his head as he looked at her stomach before he moved closer to her and started whining as he placed his chin on her thigh.

Sara smiled as she placed her hand on his head and started petting. "Yeah buddy, you'll be getting a baby brother or sister soon."

That's the scene that Grissom walked into, so he smiled as he sat down on the bed next to his wife. "The earliest appointment isn't until Friday, and I was thinking about calling another office, but she's supposed to be one of the best out there and we were lucky that there was even an opening to being with."

Sara nodded in understanding. "As hard as it will be to wait, I rather wait for the best, so Friday is good enough for me."

He took her hand. "You got it."

Sara then took a breath and spoke with emotion. "Griss, we are going to have a baby."

Grissom just nodded with tears in his eyes as he brings her hand up to kiss it softly.

End of Flashback

"I've missed you too, baby."

When it was time for her to think about going back to work full time, she could have kept those shorten hours as she had been doing throughout her pregnancy and William's first three years of his life, which it was more tempting than she ever thought it would be. But as much as she loved her son and wanted to spend all of her time with him, she needed to be out there a little more, there was still that need to help those victims' families. She just hopes he understands one day on why she had to go back to work, although she does try to balance it out, meaning no longer overtime, unless she really can't help it. She was just thankful to have a loving and supporting partner who helped pick up the slack when she really needed it.

Sara sighed again as she whispered. "You know how much I love you, right?"

As they pulled back, he nodded with a smile, his blue eyes sparkling. "To the moon and back."

Sara chuckled with a nod. "Yes, you are correct." They share one more hug before she asked. "Now are you ready for lunch?"

Once both of her boys nodded, Sara stands up, grabs her purse from her desk then the three of them left the office and lab so they could enjoy their family lunch time.
