Sebastian was never the introverted type. He is very outgoing, outspoken, and he enjoys meeting new people.
Nevertheless, when Sebastian and his mother walked into the Freeman's residence, he felt that overwhelming feeling of anxiety. There were approximately 30 people inside, which included Nina's great aunt and uncles, cousins, and random children who frequently ran past him.
Not to mention, he was carrying hot food in his arms thanks to his mother. Junior, who was walking ahead of him, leading them towards the kitchen.
Jazmine couldn't help but notice the stares she had been receiving since she entered. Men were giving her hungry looks while women were looking at her with rotten ones. She didn't know how many times she had heard a low whistle or the word "Goddamn!" when she walked passed.
She felt like prey in the jungle.
It's a good thing she had Huey behind her.
Huey noticed the attention Jazmine was receiving as he walked behind her. Every now and then, he would have to glare a little harder at them. It was expected for them to act crazy. Jazmine was a very attractive woman and the men in his family were like a pack of wolves.
Despite his current situation, if any of them act crazy tonight, he was prepared to get out of character if he had to.
As they finally found their way to the kitchen, Cindy was the first to notice them. Her bright blue eyes broadened and she immediately looked at Jazmine, whose face glowed with excitement.
"Hey, Sebastian! I see you finally made it! "Cindy exclaimed.
Sebastian laughed a bit" Our apologies for showing up late. There was traffic along the way "
"It's alright baby boy! You here now that all that matters" Cindy said.
She gazed at Jazmine. "You must be Sebastian's mother. I'm Cindy, Nina's aunt, "she came forward.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Cindy. I'm Jazmine" Jazmine said, introducing herself. "I made a some food trays for the guest, if that's alright with you? "
"Oh yeah? What you make? " Cindy asked curiously.
Jazmine touched her chin. "Um.. Let me see. Baked Mac and cheese, potato salad, seafood salad, Jack Daniels wings, and shrimp skewers. " She explained. "The shrimp is marinated. All you need to do is cook on the grill for 2-3 minutes on each side and it should be done"
"Aw, shit. You hooked a sista up. I was feeling bad that I didn't make any sides. I appreciate it, boo," Cindy said gratefully.
"No problem. Thank you for having us" Jazmine said, smiling at her.
"Sorry to interrupt y'all little introduction, but where can we put this. My arms are starting to hurt" Junior complained.
Cindy laughed " Son don't play. You know it goes on the table next to the grill. Why don't you men go out there and set the food up. Huey, could you tell Riley to put those shrimp skewers on the grill, please? " She asked Huey.
"Ok," he said calmly.
Jazmine smirked as she knew Huey would likely be the first to put a shrimp skewer on his plate.
She knew he usually doesn't eat at his family's barbecues because he doesn't like meat, so she secretly made them just for him.
"I'ma be out there and a bit to introduce y'all, then we gotta serve, Jazmine if you don't mind. Could you give me a hand with this banana pudding? " Cindy asked.
"Sure, let me wash my hands first, " " Jazmine said as she walked towards the sink.
Huey glanced at Jazmine once more as the men headed out in the backyard. Jazmine caught him staring and rolled her eyes in a playful manner before turning her attention to her hand washing.
He chuckled, shaking his head before making his way to the backyard.
Cindy checked to see if anyone was looking and then she turned to Jazmine, who had finished washing her hands.
"Okay, we can cut the act now" Cindy announced.
Jazmine paused and turned towards Cindy.
"Are you sure nobody's looking ?" Jazmine asked.
Cindy nodded and they immediately squealed while hugging.
"I miss you, girl!" Cindy said, her eyes were tearful.
"I missed you, too!" Jazmine said crying. " I am so sorry that I lost touch with you" Jazmine felt guilty that she had distanced herself from everyone.
"Girl, I understand. You had to do what you had to do," she said. Jazmine doesn't have to clarify her absence. Cindy knew that Jazmine was in pain over the break up and couldn't stand being associated with anyone close to Huey.
Despite Cindy and Jazmine's separate relationship, her marriage to Riley made it more challenging for them to keep up with each other.
After his grandad passed away, Riley sold the house and moved to the suburbs of Chicago.
They held each other for a while, then they drifted apart.
"I can't believe it's been 20 years now," Cindy said while wringing her tears.
Jazmine laughed. She rubbed her eyes as she remarked, "Time went by fast."
"I know, it was yesterday that we were all in junior high now, look at us. I'm 40, married with several kids."
"Ugh! Tell me about it. I'm divorced with a 20 year old son" Jazmine said.
"Girl. That black blood in you don't crack. You look so good. " Cindy complimented her.
Jazmine responded, "Thanks, you look great,"
Regardless of having several children, Cindy kept a nice figure. Her blonde hair was braided in long braids. Her skin showed minor signs of aging due to years of tobacco use and stress, but overall she was still a stunning woman.
Cindy sighed, "I wish I were 20 years younger, but thank you boo, "
"Yeah. It's hard getting old, but if you keep a healthy lifestyle. Things aren't so bad" Jazmine advised.
"Easy for you to say. Miss perfect", she said with a teasing grin
"Thank you, but I'm far from perfect. "Jazmine disagreed.
"Girl bye! You're perfect and so is your son. Sebastian is an angel. That boy so handsome, respectful and well spoken " Cindy said. "Meanwhile, my kids are walking demons"
Jazmine giggled, "I mean, look who their parents are"
Cindy laughed as she remarked, "Bitch, you ain't never lie,"
Jazmine laughed. "On the contrary, I still haven't met your other kids, but I had the pleasure of meeting Junior. He seems like a wonderful young man,"
Cindy laughed with hysteria as she recounted. " Do you remember how bad Riley was while growing up? That's exactly how Junior is and now my Cassie is like me. Child...does she have a mouth on her!"
"How many kids in total do you have?"Jazmine asked.
"I have four girls, and four boys, two additional step sons " Cindy confirmed.
"Woah. You guy's didn't waste no time"Jazmine said, ignoring the fact that she mentioned she had stepchildren.
"Girl. Yes! But I'm grateful for the family I've created, which is much bigger than I thought it would be." Cindy admitted.
"That's wonderful Cindy. I really happy for you and Riley. You are so fortunate to have sustained a strong marriage," Jazmine said on a positive note.
She glanced at Cindy's ring which was the same ring that once brought pain to her heart.
Cindy followed her glance, staring at her ring, then scoffed as she glanced at it.
"Riley cheated our whole marriage. He had two babies on me by two different women" Cindy revealed. "That explains the stepchildren," she said with a painful expression.
"Oh.. I'm so sorry " Jazmine apologized.
"It's cool. I'm over it now," Cindy said, even though it hurt her nonetheless.
"I'm sure it was hard though " Jazmine said, feeling bad,
"It's still hard. But what's done is done. There's no sense in dwelling in the past. Plus, I love that man. I'm not going nowhere and he not either " Cindy said.
"Marriage is hard, but I applaud you for sticking through " Jazmine said, truthfully.
"What about your ex husband? Did he ever step out of ya'll marriage? " Cindy asked.
"During times of conflict between us, we had an open marriage because we didn't want a divorce to affect Sebastian's focus. At that time, he was starting high school and it would have been stressful," Jazmine admitted.
"Wow. So you both had a side piece? " Cindy asked.
"Not exactly. I had a friend here and there, but nothing ever went past second base" Jazmine revealed. " My ex, on the other hand, started dating his secretary. Now there are currently married"
Jazmine always suspected that her ex-husband had an affair before they separated, and initially felt hurt when she discovered that things were getting serious between them. However, she never said anything about it. She believed that it was wrong for her to be upset because of her longing love for another man.
"Oh wow" Cindy said, shaking her head. "Men ain't shit"
"There is no resentment between us. Sebastian's father and I are way past it. " Jazmine stated.
"Okay, That's wassup. So will his daddy be attending the wedding? " Cindy asked.
"To tell you the truth, I haven't told him yet. I'm going to let Sebastian tell his father about it on his own" Jazmine admitted.
Cindy nodded, then she changed the subject. " I still can't believe you and Huey was once in love now years later, y'all kids in love too,"
Jazmine agreed" Yeah, it's so bizarre "
"I can't imagine myself in that situation. Girl I know you were losing your mind" Cindy asked, wanting to know the tea.
"Yes, it was mind blowing. However, Despite the challenges, Huey and I have come to an understanding that we have both moved on. Our priority is to be supportive of our children" Jazmine said seriously.
Cindy rolled her eyes "Girl please. Y'all can pretend if y'all want, but you can't hide what's in your heart, " she said as Jazmine felt her heart sting.
Jazmine felt an itch in her throat. "I mean Huey will always hold a place in my heart, but things have changed. There's no point in turning back especially when our kid's feelings are at sake,"
Before Cindy had the chance to say something Cassie walked in.
"Mom. Excuse me for interrupting, but Dad wanted me to tell ya'll to hurry ya'll asses up. We tired of eating hot dogs and burgers,"
"Girl, watch your fucking mouth in my house! Don't be be rude. You see Ms. DuBois standing here. Say Hello," Cindy said, gritted her teeth.
Cassie chuckled nervously. "My bad Mom" she looked at Jazmine.
Jazmine thought Cassie looked exactly like Cindy expect she had a much darker skin tone with green eyes, and thick wavy hair.
"Hello, Ms. DuBois, I'm Cassie Nina's favorite cousin, " Cassie said with a wave.
"Hello Cassie, it's a pleasure to meet you"Jazmine said politely.
"Like wise. Ms DuBios" Cassie said respectfully.
Uh..so like...y'all coming out so we can eat?" Cassie asked.
Cindy rolled her eyes. "Yes greedy ass! We coming out to feed y'all "
"Okay bet, "Cassie said, racing out the backdoor.
Cindy looked at Jazmine who was giggling "I told y'all those kids were demons"
Jazmine shook her head. "Awe. She was a sweetheart"
"Shit, let's swap kids, I'll take your sweet son over mines any day ," Cindy said as Jazmine smiled.
As they left, Jazmine jokingly said "Oh no. You can't have my baby"
"Yo, what's taking them so long? "Riley said impatiently.
"You know how women are. " Huey stated" they find pleasure in "catching up" in other words, conversing and hearing the latest gossip"
" Catch up? They can do that shit later, a nigga tryna eat" Riley complained.
Suddenly, Cindy came out with Jazmine. The moment Riley saw Jazmine he jaw dropped.
"Goddamnmmm! " Riley exclaimed in exaggeration. "You weren't lying when you said she was fine "He whispered.
"I told you," Huey said while Riley was shaking his head.
"Yo, if you don't hit that. You a gay ass nigga, " He said as Huey sighed in annoyance.
Cindy walked up to them with Jazmine.
"Hey boo" she said as she and Riley shared a kiss.
"The food done?" She asked as Riley looked at her like she was crazy,
"Hell yeah. That shit has been done. We are waiting on ya'll to serve the real food," He said.
"Boy shut the fuck up. It wasn't that long" Cindy said. " But we here now so let's get this started. "
Riley grinned at Jazmine. "Long time no see Jazzy D"
"How are you, Riley? "Jazmine said gently. She would have given him a hug, but she didn't want to raise suspicion. "I see you haven't changed a bit, "" she remarked.
Riley's appearance had changed considerably. He had gained some weight, resulting in a husky structure. His cornrows had grown longer, touching the middle of his back. He had a few gray hairs on his head that adorned his goatee. His attire suggested that he was stuck in time. He is still dressed like a young thug, tattooed along his arms and heavy chains on his neck.
Although he underwent these changes, he was still a good looking man.
"Real niggas don't change you feel me?" Riley said proudly. "But I see some change in you though" He said, examining her body.
Cindy glared at him and cleared her throat. "Let's hope there's no change your eyesight by the end if this night." she said in a threatening tone.
Riley laughed nervously. "Chill baby, im only playing, " he said, grabbing Cindy's ass.
"Let go of me, dummy," said Cindy, blushing. Riley ignored her began placing kisses on her neck.
Junior came out of nowhere and said" y'all nasty get a room"
Cindy and Riley glared at him. "Stop hating," they said in unison.
Jazmine chuckled at them as Huey approached her.
"You alright, Ms. DuBois?" he asked, trying to stay in character.
"Yes. Mr. Freeman. Thanks for asking" she replied back.
"No problem, " he said as he tried to keep his distance, but the scent of her was distracting him.
She smelled so good, he wondered what she tastes like.
"Are you alright?" Jazmine asked, interrupting his dirty thoughts.
"Yes. Thanks for your concern " Huey said briefly.
She gave him a flirty look and said, "No problem, "
Huey couldn't help but stare at her. Her beauty was beyond measure
Jazmine couldn't handle the way he looked at her.
He was so damn hot .
"Yo Huey. Imma need to steal her real quick. I wanna introduce her to the rest of the family, " Cindy said as she came between the two.
"Sure, do your thing, " He said as he stepped away.
Huey returned to his previous location as The women left to greet everyone.
"Okay, hold it right there" Aunt cookie said as she continued to take a dozen pictures of Sebastian and Nina.
Nina sighed as she faked another smile.
"That's wonderful, now let's get a photo of the parents" Aunt Cookie said. Looking around. "Where is your mother child?" She asked Sebastian.
The moment she said that Cindy called Nina's name.
"Nina! Come introduce ya mother in law"
Nina felt relieved that she had a reason to escape.
"Pardon us, Aunt Cookie " she said as she grabbed Sebastian. They're heading in the direction of Jazmine and Cindy. .
Jazmine squealed instantly as she noticed Nina.
"Nina! " She said as they shared a hug. Jazmine retreated and, glinting at her with admiration
"My god! . Look at you! " She exclaimed as Nina giggled. "You look absolutely stunning "
"Thank you Jazmine " Nina said, feeling good.
"I'm glad you could make it" She mentioned.
"Oh Honey. I wouldn't miss it for the world " Jazmine said with a smile.
Nina smiled back at her. She was really warming up to Jazmine.
Jazmine looked at Sebastian concernedly
"How you holding up baby? " Jazmine asked.
"I'm better now that my two favorite women are here" Sebastian said.
"Awe" Jazmine said as she was touched by his words. She kissed his cheek.
"I love you, my sugar plum" Jazmine said which made Sebastian uncomfortable.
"I love you too MA, but please don't ever call me that, " He said, not wanting her to embarrass him.
Nina laughed hysterically as Aunt Cookie made her way towards them.
Aunt cookie squinted her eyes like she was trying to figure out something.
"Baby, do you know me? " She said to Jazmine, who look nervous.
Nina spoke up.
"Aunt Cookie this is Sebastian's mother, Jazmine " Nina explained. "Jazmine, this is my great aunt Cookie"
"It's nice to meet you Jazmine " Aunt Cookie said kindly.
Jazmine eyes relaxed as she smiled "it's a pleasure to meet you too Cookie. "
"Call me Aunt Cookie babe. By the way, You have such a handsome young man here, '' she remarked, referring to Sebastian.
"Thank you. 'I am a very proud mother,' Jazmine proudly declared.
"As you should. You did well " Aunt cookie said.
"May I take some pictures of you with Nina and Sebastian?" she asked while lifting her camera.
"Of course, " Jazmine said as a stand between Nina and Sebastian to strike a pose.
Some time later,
Jazmine and Sebastian were introduced to the entire family who had asked a million questions and were eagerly anticipating their responses. Shortly after everyone gathered and sat at their tables. Cindy was serving the guest their plates while Jazmine assisted.
Jazmine had finished her part in serving, and was making her way to her seat when a strong hand grabbed her arm, pulling her close. It was one of Huey's first cousins named Herbert. He was among a the few others that had been flirtatious with Jazmine.
She panted a bit as he had caught her by surprise.
He gazed at her body, arousing a lustful look. "Come here, sweet thing."
"Can I help you with something?" Jazmine said, calmly.
He grinned. "Yeah. Sure thing sumptuous," he licked his lips.
Jazmine wanted to gag, but she smiled anyway. "Okay, what can I do for you, sir?"
He rubbed her arm and said, 'You can let me take you out on a date,"
Jazmine slowly withdraws from his grasp. "I'm sorry honey, but I've already spoken for and this is highly inappropriate" she said, giving him a firm look.
He burst out laughing, "OK, I see you a loyal one. I like that. But, um. If it's not too much trouble, could you please make me another plate? " He asked.
" Certainly ," she said as she turned to leave, but she suddenly she collided with Huey's chest.
"Where you are heading to woman? "Huey asked, looking at her seriously.
"I was going to grab another plate for your cousin Herb" she said, trying to get out his way but he only blocked her.
"Wrong. " He leaned in towards her ear with his hand on the small of her back.. "You're going to find that perfect behind of yours a good seating, our children are expecting us," He said, in demand.
"Huey..." She said, beaming red.
What's gotten into him?
"Don't Huey me woman. You heard what I said" He said firmly.
Jazmine raised her eyebrows at him, giving him a warning look.
Huey smirked and backed away. "Ms. DuBois, would you mind finding our table and saving a seat for me? " He asked with more respect.
Jazmine wanted to smack that smirk from his face.
"Fine, but what about him?" Jazmine asked, referring to cousin Herbert.
"Surely Herbert wouldn't mind fixing his own plate, would he, now? " He said loud enough for Herbert to hear. He aimed a threatening gaze at Herbert.
Herbert laughed nervously and said, "Yeah, yeah, don't worry about sweet thing."
She looked at Huey suspiciously then she said.
"Oh, okay. I'll go find our table" Jazmine said before awkwardly walking away.
"Mm..mm. " Herbert said, watching her. "That ass is crazy," Herbert said, nudging his cousins as they laughed, while shaking his head.
Huey approached him with a menacing expression, glancing at him.
"Aye! Wassup cousin " Herbert said as he stood to give Huey a hug.
Huey leaned in into an one armed hug, he grabbed his hand, squeezing on his hand firmly.
Herbert winced in pain.
"Let that be the last time I ever see you touch that woman" He said as he squeezed his hand tighter. "As a matter of fact. Looking at her is not something you want to do"
"You feel me cuz? " Huey asked, letting out his Chicago accent. His grip on Herbert's hand became tighter and tighter.
Hebert felt his knuckles cracking . " Yes, I hear you! "he uttered out his mouth.
Huey patted him in the back, which felt like a hard blow. He stepped back as though nothing had happened.
Huey chuckled, "Good to see you cousin," he said in a mocking tone.
Herbert shook his now wounded hand.
"You too, cousin," laughed Herbert, concealing his discomfort.
As Herbert sat quietly, The men at the table all looked at Huey in confusion,
"Is there a problem?" Huey asked as they shook their heads in fear.
"Nah, we good cuz" they said as they proceeded to play cards.
"Hey, Ma, we was waiting for you," Sebastian said as Jazmine approached the table.
"My apologies, baby, I wanted to make certain that everyone had their plate", Jazmine explained.
"You're not obligated to serve everyone. You're a guest." Nina said, pitching the bridge of her nose.
"Oh honey, I know, but I insisted " Jazmine said with a warm smile.
"Well, we made a plate for you and dad. We haven't eaten yet because we thought it would be nice to eat together, "Nina mentioned. " I asked my dad to go find you, did you see him?"
"Yes. I saw him. He told me he needed to use the restroom and will be back shortly " Jazmine said as Nina nodded.
"That's fine, " She said.
Soon after, Aunt Cookie approached them with two plates of food in her hands.
"Do you mind if I sit here? " She asked while sitting next to Nina, who had saved the seating initially for her father.
"Sure. Aunt Cookie" Nina said, hiding her annoyance. She wanted it to be just the four of them.
"Thank you, babe," she said as she sat opposite Jazmine.
"You made a plate for your father? " She asked in concern.
"Yes, Ma'am" Nina said.
Aunt Cookie scoffed " That's if that man eats. He never eats my food."
"I think it's because he's a vegetarian," said Nina.
"To hell with that vegetarian mess! "Aunt Cookie said. "A little meat don't hurt. Boy I tell you, Your father is one stubborn man"
"Nephew, glad of you to join us" Aunt Cookie smiled as if she wasn't just bad mouthing him.
Huey approached the table and took a seat next to Aunt Cookie. After a lengthy prayer from Aunt Cookie, they continued their meal.
"So Jazmine. Where is that husband of yours? " Aunt Cookie asked out of the blue.
Jazmine paused as she was caught off guard. "Sebastian's father and I got divorced some time ago" She was tired of explaining her divorce story but she didn't want to be rude.
Aunt Cookie gasps as if it was a bad thing. "Oh lord have mercy. I'm sorry to hear that."
"It's okay. We're in a good place now" Jazmine said.
"Are you living alone? "Aunt Cookie asked as Huey and Nina exhibited similar facial expressions.
"Yes, I do, " Jazmine replied,
"That's not good, You ought to have a man at home that can protect you" Aunt Cookie remarked.
"I appreciate your concern, but I feel safe in my home alone, " Jazmine says
"Honey. Safety is not the only thing that matters. It's about finding a companionship. Find yourself a man while you're still young and beautiful. Once you reach my age, you lose youth and no man will want you," Aunt Cookie said bluntly.
I certainly would, Huey thought. Huey's love for Jazmine was unconditional, regardless it she grew old.
"I guess you're right, but I'm not looking for a man right now" Jazmine said how she suddenly felt uneasy. Having these types of conversations was not her cup of tea. The idea of having a partner in life is a dream come true, but she also found pleasure in being single. Despite the loneliness, she felt secure in the knowledge that nobody could ever break her heart again.
"Nah, I'm the only man that's allowed in her life right now" Sebastian joked. "But for real Ma. You deserve the same happiness."
"Who said I was unhappy? "Jazmine said. "My marvelous son is engaged to this beautiful woman right here," said Jazmine is referring to Nina. "I couldn't be more happier "
"Awe. Thank you Jazmine" Nina said. "That means so much,"
"Anytime, sweetie", Jazmine kindly said.
Aunty Cookie smiled at their interaction. "Nina, I see that you and your future mother-in-law have a nice bond.
"Yes, we do. She's awesome " Nina said as her and Jazmine smiled at each other.
Aunt cookie looked at Huey.
" That's good..Nephew how is your relationship with Sebastian? " She asked.
"What relationship? We only met a week ago. "Huey said.
Jazmine glared at him which made his recount his words.
"What I mean is we haven't had much time to really get to know each other" Huey said.
Aunt cookie gasped, slamming her hand on the table. "Say what? You are telling me you just met this child? " She asked in disbelief.
"Yes, that wonderful great niece of yours kept her relationship a secret from me for almost two years. " He stated.
"To my defense, Dad, I had valid reasons why I kept it a secret " Nina defended.
"I know, but you also tricked me into coming here" Huey said.
"What you mean tricked? " Aunt Cookie folded her arms.
"She brought me a non-refundable ticket without my consent " Huey said as Aunt Cookie burst into laughter.
"That was kind of smart. We all know your daddy doesn't like to waste money " Aunt Cookie chuckled.
"And Jazmine. Were you tricked as well? " She asked.
"Not necessarily. Sebastian shared his plans with me, including the engagement, but it was also my first meeting with Nina," she explained.
"And her father?" Aunt Cookie inquired.
Jazmine glanced at Huey before responding " Yes, of course, " she said before sipping her drink. She was uncomfortable lying.
"Well, That's good to hear" Aunt Cookie said.
"It's a pity you didn't get a chance to meet Nina's mother Katherine." She mentioned as Huey brows lifted as his late wife is brought into the conversation.
"I'm sure it would have been a pleasure " Jazmine said casually.
"Nina's mother was an incredible woman," Aunt Cookie said. "We miss her terribly,"
"Yes, I wish she was here right now"Nina agreed, feeling sadness in her heart as she misses her mom's presence.
Aunt Cookie embraced Nina and held her tight"Oh child, I'm sure she is watching over you right now with a big smile on her face"
Nina's was accompanied by a sad smile "Thanks Aunt Cookie".
"I never told you this, but I happened to know your mother since she was a teenager," Aunt Cookie mentioned.
Huey shut his eyes as he didn't want her to mention this. Nina raised her eyebrows. "You're kidding me?"
Aunt Cookie shook her head. "Nope, I'm not kidding you ,"
"WOW, that's fantastic! How did you come to know her? " Nina asked excitedly.
"You remember your great-grandmother Betsy, right? " She asked as Nina nodded.
"She was my best friend growing up," she disclosed.
"Your mother was living in New Orleans, but unfortunately she lost parents during Hurricane Katrina. That's when your mother moved to Chicago along with your aunt Barbara to live with Betsy"
The news surprised Nina, "I didn't know this!" Then she realized something. "Wait... Dad, didn't you live in Chicago as well?"
"No, I lived with your great-grandfather during this time," Huey spoke briefly. He wasn't expecting Aunt Cookie to bring this up and was worried about what was about to be revealed.
"Oh, that's right," said Nina, remembering that her dad told her that his parents died in a car accident. He and Uncle Riley were obliged to live with their grandfather who lived at WoodCrest at the time.
Aunt Cookie shook her head. "Nephew stop holding back and tell this child how you really met her mother " she said.
"Nina is already aware of the story. We dated for some time after I graduated from college. She got pregnant, so we went ahead and got married. " Huey said, briefly.
"Oh no. That's not how I remember it. "Aunt Cookie said." It was around the fourth of July weekend. Your great grandfather, Robert's dementia was getting worse, so we threw a cookout for him back in Chicago,"
Huey looked down as he remembered this particular event.
"Your daddy wasn't too happy about it because he didn't support the holiday. But I also believe he was itching to be with that college chick he was experiencing with," She said.
That college chick ? Jazmine realized Cookie was referencing her, she suddenly felt offended especially when she called her an experience. Cookie's story continued to captivate her as she continued to tell it.
"That's when your mother and Betsy showed up. We introduced them and when I say it was like love at first sight. I've never seen your father speak to anybody, but when he met your mother, he couldn't take his eyes off her.. They started talking and it felt like they were the only ones in the room, "she said, as Jazmine gave Huey a look that said "Seriously?"
Huey's jaw tensed as he knew the look too well.
"Awe, that's so sweet. "Nina said, feeling overjoyed that her parents met as teenagers.
Jazmine spoke gracefully" Yes Nina. sounds like your daddy had quite the love story "
Huey sighed because he knew Jazmine was being petty. There was no stopping him from being exposed.
Meanwhile. Jazmine looked like she was making the connections.
"What happened to the college chick?" asked Sebastian, remembering Huey's story of the girl with the broken heart.
Huey looked at him with disappointment.
"Child, they broke up two weeks after the fact. " Aunt Cookie said as if it didn't matter.
But it matters to Jazmine.
"Oh was my mom the reason for this sudden break up?" Nina asked curiously. She hoped her mother wasn't some kind of homewrecker.
Huey glanced at Jazmine who avoided eye contact with him. She was staring at her plate silently, feeling a pit in her stomach.
"If you ask me, I believe he realized Kathy was the one because he asked to move in with me shortly after. " Aunt Cookie said.
"Aunt Cookie That's not true. That break-up had nothing to do with Katherine. She and I were just friends. I wasn't interested in dating anyone at the time because I was focusing on my studies" Huey clarified. " Nina, your mother and I only started going out a few years later. I only moved to Chicago because I wanted to attend Chicago state, " he partially lied.
He had the intention of transferring to Chicago State University, but he left because of his breakup with Jazmine.
"Oh, okay" Nina said , feeling relieved that her mother wasn't a side chick.
Jazmine was thinking differently.
She thought it was ironic that he would suddenly want to attend Chicago State University when his dream was always to attend Howard.
It made sense to her that Huey had lost faith in their relationship because he had met another woman that interest him more.
It was all making sense.
"You know what?... I do remember what happened " Aunt cookie mentioned. "Huey arrived at my doorstep and asked if he could live with me. I asked him, Boy, what are you running from? He told me he broke up with his girlfriend because she wanted marriage and he didn't ," said Aunt Cookie.
Huey lowered his eyes in shame. He remembers feeling heartbroken when he left for Chicago. He never wanted to cause Jazmine any pain He always regretted that decision.
"I thought maybe it was because he was afraid of committing, until the day he came to me and showed me the most beautiful engagement ring I've ever seen," she revealed.
"Oh, did he now?" Jazmine asked, taken aback.
Aunt Cookie looked pleased as she said. "Mhm.. He kept saying "I need to marry her. She is the love of my life Auntie" she recalled. "Then the next day, I learned that he had proposed to Katherine. "
"Oh...I see," said Jazmine calmly, inside swords were cutting into her heart. "How lovely." She commented, holding back her anger.
Huey was annoyed that people were talking about him as though he were not present. He was annoyed by Aunt Cookie's confusion. He was most upset that he couldn't tell what Jazmine was thinking because she wasn't showing any emotion.
Aunt Cookie got the whole thing mixed up. Huey brought that engagement ring for Jazmine when he discovered she was getting married. Out of desperation, he went to his aunt Cookie to let off steam and she advise him to follow his heart.
Unfortunately, Katherine ended up pregnant with his child.
"It was then that I learned that true love has no limits. A love without hesitation. Nina, Your father hesitated to marry that college girl. But when he with your mother, he knew right away that she was the woman he wanted to spend his life with" Aunt Cookie explained.
Nina wiped the tears from her eyes "That was so beautiful, " she said feeling emotional. "I appreciate you sharing this story with me, Aunt Cookie"
"You're welcome. I shared this with you because I see the similarities in Sebastian's eyes to your father's when he was in love with your mother" She explained.
She looked at Huey, who appeared quite upset. "Nephew, I understand that you may not like us talking about Kathy, but she deserves to hear positive things about her mother, especially at this moment"
"I hear you, Aunt Cookie," he said, trying to hide his irritation. He looked at Jazmine, giving her an apologetic look, but she continued to steer clear of him.
As Nina and Aunt Cookie began talking about the upcoming wedding plans. Sebastian was troubled by his mother's silence, and grew concerned.
"Mama, are you alright?" he asked.
Jazmine puts on a smile just for him. " Yes, baby, I'm fine. "She placed her napkin on her chair, took her plate, and stood from the table. "Please, excuse me, "she announced, before walking away.
Huey immediately wanted to chase after her, but he didn't want to make it seem obvious. He waited 20 minutes before excusing himself from the table.
Jazmine had a normal routine of cooking in the kitchen when something upset her, but today she was a guest at someone's house. She gave her time to volunteer to help clean up. While everyone else was out in the yard celebrating with Nina and Sebastian, she was cleaning the dishes.
Jazmine reflected on the events related by Aunt Cookie and she felt betrayed, and hurt to learn the real reason behind Huey departure.
It was all coming back to her. Her suspicion is that Huey didn't want to settle down with her because he had fallen for someone else. She reflected on why Huey was able to easily avoid her. All the while, Huey had met Nina's mom before they separated, which is why he moved on so fast.
He didn't even bother to check to see if she was okay. He simply ghosted her and went on with his life.
He didn't love her as she believed.
Her urge to cry arose, but she had no room for weakness. It would be totally inappropriate, besides that, was 20 years ago.
She would be foolish to dwell on the past.
She needed to let it go.
She heard footsteps, which indicated that someone was entering the kitchen. She shut the tap, dried her hands, and that's when she heard his voice.
"Jazmine"
Speaking of the devil, Jazmine thought as she closed her eyes. He had a genuine look on his face when she turned to face him.
His wine colored eyes looked so beautiful as they mellowed, it almost made her forget her worries.
"Is there anything I can do for you, Freeman?" Jazmine asked, placing her hand on her thick hip.
"Jazmine, there's no one around, " as he reminded her.
He took a step forward, as she stepped back.
Jazmine rolled her eyes as she folded her arms. "What do you want, Huey? "She asked impatiently.
"I wanted to see how you were doing" He said in concern.
"I'm okay, Huey, thank you, "she said, trying to get away, but he stopped her, grasping her arms.
"Don't walk away from me while I'm talking to you woman " He said, getting close to her face. "Talk to me," he said in a suppliant voice.
Suddenly, Jazmine's eyes became watery. "Huey, stop, " she said, pulling away from him.
He grasped her arms again, pulling her close to him. He could see the pain in her eyes as he spoke, "I'll not going to stop until you tell me what's wrong"
"Uncle Huey?"
Jazmine and Huey split up right away when Huey's eight-year-old niece approached them.
Huey sighed and responded, "Yes, Alexis?"
"May I have some juice, please?" She asked in the sweetest tone.
Huey sighs tiredly. He retrieved a small carton of apple juice from the refrigerator and brought it to her.
"Thank you, Uncle Huey," she said, pushing the straw into the drink.
"You're welcome" He said kindly.
She stood there staring at him and Jazmine, and he waited to see if she would walk away, but she didn't.
"Could I ask you a question, Uncle Huey? " She said.
"Sure, Alexis. What is it? "Huey's tone grew more impatient, as he spoke.
She swings her arms innocently. " Is she your girlfriend?" She asked, pointing to Jazmine who is motionless.
Huey frowned at her. " Why would you ask me that?"
"Because you looked like you were going to kiss her," She twirled the beads in her hair while describing how boyfriends and girlfriends kiss each other.
Huey pinched the bridge of his nose. These kids were too damn grown.
He knelt down to make himself at her level. "Let me explain one thing to you. Alexis, as a child, it is your responsibility to stay where you belong. And that's In a child's place. From here on out, I don't ever want to ever hear you talking grown folks business. Do you understand me, young lady? " He said as she nodded nervously.
"Yes, Uncle Huey, I do, "she said, frightened.
"In response to your question, Ms. DuBois and I were not kissing, and you should refrain from repeating that. If you violate these terms, I will personally handle this matter appropriately ," he said as the little girl gulped deeply..
"I'm sorry uncle Huey. I promise that it won't happen again," she said as Huey stood up.
"Good. Now carry on. I'm in the middle of an adult conversation with Ms. DuBois." He said as she ran off.
Huey turned his attention back on Jazmine.
"We really should talk about what was said at the table," he said.
"No.. We can't. Not here " Jazmine said, feeling uncomfortable.
"Okay. Fine then let's go upstairs " He said as she raised her brow.
"Have you lost your mind? That would be completely inappropriate. " She whispered. "Not to mention, it would make us look super suspicious "
"You're right " He said as he thought about it. "When can we discuss this matter?"
Jazmine sighed as she settled on a decision. "When I get a chance, I'll give you a call "
"So tonight? " He asked.
"Not tonight, but I will contact you within a few business days to schedule an appropriate date and time," said Jazmine, walking away from him.
Huey followed her. "What the hell am I some kind of patient to you now?" He said, pissed off at her response.
"Wasn't I just some college experience to you? " She remarked.
He blocked her trail. "Hell no. You were more than that and you know it, " he stated as she laughed bitterly.
"Which explains why you left me in the dust" Jazmine said, brushing pass him,
He grabbed her arm, holding her back. "Don't you recall that you were the one who broke up with me? "He said out of anger.
She snatched her arm away. "I gave you an ultimatum which I had every right to. You were the one who misled me to believe you only wanted to follow your career goals. Whereas, in reality, you were interested in another girl who you eventually married and shared a life with, " She snapped. "So don't you dare try to gaslight me" Before Huey had a chance to defend himself. She stormed off into the backyard.
Damn, that woman was fast.
"Who the fuck made you mad? " Cindy said coming towards Jazmine.
Jazmine hugged Cindy "Thank you so much for having me."
"Wait.. I know you not leaving already?" Cindy said, slightly hurt.
"Yes, I'm sorry. I'm ready to go to bed now. It's getting late "Jazmine explained
"It's cool. Do you need Sebastian to take you home? Cindy inquired with concern.
Jazmine noticed that Sebastian is having a good time with Nina and didn't want to bother him.
"No. He should stay and enjoy. I'm going to order an Uber ride" Jazmine said, pulling out her phone to check the app.
"Oh hell naw. Sebastian! " Cindy's shouted, causing Sebastian and Nina to stop what they were doing to approach them.
"Is everything okay Auntie?" Nina asked.
"Yes, everything cool, Sebastian's mother is leaving " Cindy said as Nina looked a little disappointed.
"Awe, So soon? " Nina asked.
"Yes, I'm sorry, honey, I'm old. I can't hang like you youngsters, besides, it's past my bedtime,' Jazmine says.
"I understand, do you need Sebastian to take you home?" Nina suggested, though she didn't want him to leave.
"Yeah, Mama I can take you home" Sebastian offered.
Jazmine shook her head. "That won't be necessary. You should stay and enjoy your party with Nina" she said.
"But Ma, how were you getting home?" asked Sebastian.
"I was going to catch an Uber" Jazmine mentioned.
"Nah. Ma. I don't want you driving around with a stranger this time at night, "Sebastian said.
"Babe, I'll be back. I'm going to take mama home real quick,"Sebastian" said to Nina who looked disappointed.
"All right, baby," she said..
"Sebastian, I don't want you to be forced to leave your party. I'll be fine taking an Uber" Jazmine said adamantly.
"What's happening?" said Riley, approaching them with Huey, who had been discussing his current situation with his brother.
"Jazmine needs a ride home. Sebastian offered, but she doesn't want him to leave the party and none of us want her taking an Uber, " Cindy explained.
Riley smiled just as he had an idea in mind. "My brother Huey can give her a ride home, problem solved."
"Dad, I think it's a good idea. Would you mind taking Sebastian's mom home? "Nina asked. Previously, Nina would have been against her dad taking Jazmine home, but after tonight, she didn't feel Jazmine was a threat. In addition, She really didn't want Sebastian to have to leave their party.
"Sure, if Ms. DuBois is comfortable with that?," Huey said, looking at her.
Jazmine looked at him with a false smile, "Oh no, Thank you, Mr. Freeman. I wouldn't want to send you out your way,"
"You wouldn't be sending me out if my way, Ms. DuBios. I assure you, the hotel I'm staying in is 10 minutes from your residence, " He said.
"I don't know about this,"Jazmine said unsure. She had no desire to be near Huey.
"Mama, please, I would feel better if you took a ride with someone we know rather than some creepy Uber driver," Sebastian said.
"On another note, my dad is an excellent driver and you don't have to spend money" Nina told her, trying to convince her.
Jazmine sighed heavily, 'Okay, Mr Freeman. "I'll accept your offer, "she said, giving in.
"Very well then, let me know when you're ready," he said.
"I am ready now, if you don't mind?" Jazmine replied.
"OK," he said.
Jazmine gave Nina a hug and then went over to Sebastian.
"Are you planning on staying another night?" She asked him.
"Yes, Ma. We will be back in the morning," said Sebastian, kissing his mother's cheek.
"I will see you tomorrow then, my love, "she said.
"Text me when you get home safe. I love you mama" he finally said.
"I love you more, baby," said Jazmine.
Meanwhile, Huey was embracing his daughter.
"Drive safely, and please don't drive my mother-in-law crazy with your car rules, "Nina pointed out, referring to her father's strict car rules.
Huey smirked "I'll try my best, " he said.
Nina chuckled. "I love you, Dad,"
"I love you too princess, " he said.
"Keep my Mama safe, would you? ?" Sebastian said as they shook hands.
"As long as you keep your end of the bargain " Huey said, his way of telling him to keep Nina safe.
Sebastian respectfully said, "No doubt, you have a good night, Mr. Freeman."
"Same to you, Sebastian " Huey said.
Shortly after everyone had said their good-byes, Sebastian and Nina returned to their guest. Meanwhile, Huey and Jazmine were leaving.
Riley approached Huey, giving him a side hug. He snuck a condom into his brother's hand and said. "Enjoy your night bro, " he said with a devilish grin.
Huey shook his head, putting the condom in his pocket, it was not his intention to use it.
"Are you ready, Ms. DuBois? " He took a good look at her.
She was stunning even when she was pissed off.
Jazmine noticed him checking her out and scoffed in disgust. She clicked her heels as she walked ahead of him.
He chuckles, enjoying the fact that she had a switch in her walk when she had an attitude. He was delighted to have the opportunity to be alone with her.
There were misunderstandings that he needed to get to the bottom of, and there was no way in hell he was going to do it on her terms.
"Is there something you wanna say?" he asked when he got into his rental car.
Jazmine never said a word when she fastened her seatbelt.
She folded her arms and turned her head towards the window, avoiding his gaze.
"The silent treatment? Really DuBios? "He said while she continued to ignore him.
"Jazmine " he called her name. "Jazmine...Goddamn woman, I know you hear me talking to you, "he said and once again he was ignored.
He sighed deeply as he gave up.. For now.
He started the engine and thought to himself they were in for one hell of a ride.
