Solar Expanse. Sol System. Saturnine Docks. 2167 CE
"Captain Hannah Abigail Shepard, here to see Director Harper for my assignment" Newly promoted Captain Shepard stated to the men in Cerberus white colors, who ran a scanner before her.
"Please hold still, Captain." One of the guards said, as the scanners worked, while a secretary at the desk nodded to guard. "Documents are in good order, Captain, and scanners have picked up nothing. You are good to go." At that point, the door forward opened up, and Hannah Shepard moved forward.
The massive and expansive Saturnine Docks have become something of a mega polis in space, as it was now more than a simple shipyard and dock for the 1st Fleet. With the destruction of the Arcturus Station, Saturnine Docks were made into an HQ of the 1st Fleet, and with the full integration of the Cerberus, it now found itself here as well. A relatively small portion of the ever-expanding Docks was allocated to Cerberus, and this was where Shepard was ordered to report.
It has been two months since the shakedown flight of the Enterprise and their meeting with the derelict Reaper, and since then, she was brought up to speed on the whole situation, regarding Reapers and Cycles. To say it was hard to believe at first would be an understatement, but after she was presented with all of the data and not to mention seeing and hearing a Reaper speak… There simply was no denying it all, the fact that their galaxy was basically a harvesting ground for Reapers, and the clock was ticking for the next extinction event. As far as how much time they had, it was not yet clear, but it was clear that they were not far from the metaphorical 12 o'clock, and so the Union and Humanity will need every advantage if they are to survive. Shepard understood that too, and so she remained silent to not spread the panic, and as an unintended result, she was now promoted to full Captain after being Commander for less than a year.
While the Union was still recovering from the Salarian Blitz at impressive rates, the attack had left them without many experienced and qualified officers who had experience, hence a great many junior officers were moved up the ranks. In Shepard's case, it wasn't much of a surprise that she was made Captain, despite such a short time as a Commander, though ideally, she should've been a Commander for years now. The reason why she was denied the promotion was because of her vocal criticism of then Alliance Council and their nigh negligent approach towards the colonies, who were milked for their resources, yet not given equal amount of necessities in return. For that and other things she said, Shepard was basically black listed from promotions, and if not for Admiral Hojo and now Admiral Drake, she would have long since left the Alliance.
Instead, she stuck around, and now, after a break with her family on Terra Nova, Shepard was to see about her first assignment, and it was connected with Cerberus, now a part of larger Union Intelligence Community. Like all in the Navy, she had about Cerberus even before they made their public appearance, the stories of some Black Ops unit of the Alliance were rather widespread across the Alliance Navy. Nowadays, Cerberus was a little more open, but still largely secretive, and it was said that only two men knew all there is to know about Cerberus, and those were Director Jack Harper and Chancellor Alexander Drake. Personally, Hannah never liked working with spooks, but understood their necessity, and she was, generally, a good officer, she accepted her assignment without much grumbling.
Soon, after some bit of walking, she came into an observation deck, where she was greeted by the man she was looking for, Director Jack Harper, looking out in the distance through the glass. Walking closer to him, Shepard noticed that outside were shipyard rows dedicated to frigates, the frames of which were being built in the void of space. Once she had closed the distance, Jack Harper spoke up.
"Captain Shepard." He said, turning to see her, holding a cigarette in his hand. "You are a little earlier than I expected." He noted.
"I heard it is bad form to be late to your appointment, Director." Shepard answered. "People were known to disappear after being late by one minute or so."
"A bit of an exaggeration. I normally order kidnappings after 3 minutes of being late." Harper answered with a dry tone, to which Shepard let out a small chuckle. "Admiral Drake did say you were not afraid to state your opinion, and this quality had landed you into some hot waters with the Alliance Council and Strategic Command. Must admit, I did find your manifest to be rather on point on certain things, and I did enjoy the parallels between Systems Alliance and 18th Century British Empire. You are a woman of quite a few qualities, Captain Shepard."
"Glad you liked it, but I'm very much taken, married and very much happily so." Shepard responded to the praise, with Harper simply letting out a chuckle at that.
"I know you are." He responded, as he smocked his cigarette. "And I also know that you are not exactly pleased with me requesting you for this assignment."
"More like disturbed by the lack of provided details, safe for the fact that you will be giving me the de-briefing on it." Shepard said, with Jack turning and motioning her to follow him, as they entered a turbo-lift and rode it. "So, what is this mission you wish to undertake? I hope you don't plan to put me in an evening dress and take me out dancing for some infiltration mission."
"No, you can breathe easy, Captain." Harper assured her as they rode the elevator. "As you know, Cerberus has many roles and uses, and foreign intelligence is our primary one. And while the number of our assets have increased substantially since our official integration into the Union's structure, we are still somewhat limited in resources. Great deal of our current assets are engaged in different operations and are spread thin, hence why I've reached out into the Strategic Command so they would… lend me someone for a particular mission. They sent you." And at that moment the pair reached their floor, and Shepard stepped out, following Harper into what looked like a command center, where Eva Core was waiting for them.
"Jack, Captain Shepard, pleasure to make your acquaintance." Eva said.
"Captain Shepard, this is Eva Core, the Deputy Director of Cerberus and your handler for duration of your assignment." Jack stated, before they moved to the holo table and tapped it, displaying the map of the galaxy. "Now, as for your assignment, Captain Shepard: your job will be to scout out the Terminus Systems, survey and assess their potential threat, possible plans and available space assets. First and foremost, you are to determine what are Aria T'Loak's plans and what is she doing."
"The Pirate Queen of Omega? I thought that after her daughter's death and destruction of her armada, she would keep quiet. It has been almost a year and a half since that attack, and no retaliation has come from her yet." Shepard remarked.
"Yes, and this is what troubles us. Our analysis of T'Loak shows she is not the kind to simply forget something like that. That defeat was the single biggest blow to her reputation, power and prestige, but most importantly, ego." Eva Core spoke up. "And yet she has taken no actions against Humanity ever since, and since that attack, we have not had any major altercations with Terminus Systems' raiders and slavers. Only small time attacks, and carried out by ragtag groups, and even those are rare now, and this is not normal. By all accounts, Aria and other pirate warlords should've capitalized on our weakness after the Blitz, but they did not. This, along with other scattered reports we have been getting, are causing some concern among us."
"What reports?" Shepard asked.
"According to testimonies of the captured pirates and slavers, Omega is militarizing, and fast." Jack Harper spoke up. "We don't know all the details, but what we do know, is that we've lost contact with all of Human colonies within the Terminus Systems."
"You mean the people that have left due to not wanting to be under the Alliance?" Shepard asked. "I thought that after they left our space, the Alliance washed their hands of them, and the Union had placed strict regulations in regards to unsanctioned colonization of uncharted territories."
"Yes, yet we've been attempting to keep in contact with those colonies, but in the post-Blitz colonies, they were forgotten, and now that we have a more defined and established power, we've attempted to reach out to them." Eva Core continued. "Our response was only silence. Your mission will also involve investigating their fate."
"Considering how we've given Aria a black eye, she could've taken out her anger on those colonies." Shepard remarked.
"This is our working theory, but we need solid proof." Jack stated to Shepard. "Considering the nature of your assignment and the fact that you will be operating deep within hostile space, you will be outfitted with a vessel, appropriate for your mission. Do note that your mission is strictly recon and information gathering, not engagement in combat."
"Understood, and I doubt I'd be able to win with an Austerlitz-class, if I were discovered." Shepard said, before noticing a momentary pause. "I assumed that since this is a recon mission, I'll be captaining a Frigate, possibly one that is modified for this kind of work."
"Not quite, for you will have the distinct honor of commanding something a bit newer." Eva Core said, as she then brought up a hologram of the new ship, which Shepard immediately began to study. "This is the Edinburg-class Cruiser, the new medium type cruiser that will be entering mass production soon."
"Medium type cruiser?" Hannah asked, before she studied the new design. "Hm, this is definitely smaller than Moscow, and even Geneva, but definitely a cruiser, though smallest we have. Four twin Perseus, six twin Bellerophon, four armament launchers… But those power output specs don't make sense. No drive core could operate this kind of output, and there are also some experimental tech. What exactly is this thing?"
"This particular ship was experimental test-bed for radical technologies, some of which you have already seen on the Enterprise. As for the class in general, from my understanding, the Union Navy has reached a conclusion, that with the size of our holdings and on-going expansion, more often than naught we encounter situations where Frigates are not enough to handle the situation, and standard Cruisers are no available, and are simply too powerful and costly. In order to shore up defenses, Union Navy decided to employ a smaller, more cost effective cruiser, a potential Light Cruiser, if you will. This class will take less time to construct, but will have sufficient firepower to stand up against it's intended targets." Harper answered. "You will have one week to get acquitted with the new ship, after which you will depart for your assignment."
"Understood, then I'll go and see my ship." Shepard said, yet before she could leave Harper stopped her.
"Captain, there is one more task for you, one that is strictly off the record." Hannah turned to face him with a serious expression. "You are to also be on the lookout for the trace and evidences of the Reaper activities, or more specifically, those conducted by their thralls, the so-called Collectors. I believe you are aware of who they are?"
"Indoctrinated and mutated Protheans." Hannah responded. "I assume that any and all information in regards to them is to be delivered straight to you upon confirmation?"
"Yes. While you are out there, you are to maintain secrecy, you are free to act in accordance to your judgement, so long it doesn't compromise your mission." Harper informed her. "As I've said before, Ms. Core will be your supervisor, so you may count on her for support. Any more questions?"
"Yes, what is the protocol for combat engagements?" Hannah asked.
"Best avoid them, but in certain cases, where you have an advantage, you may engage and wipe out enemies." Eva Core answered, with Hannah nodding. "Naturally, you are allowed to return back to the Union Space for repairs and resupplies, but only to select stations. The Edinburgh is still an experimental class, and the ship we are giving to you, the Belfast carries on itself technologies that are not even listed here, the kind that we do not want others to find out."
"If it is so secretive, why do you give it to me then?" Hannah asked of them. "Why not use it as a template to mass produce more of them or something?"
"Because we wish to see how it performs, and because Chancellor Drake has faith that you will be able to bring out the best of this ship." Harper told Shepard, who was surprised to hear it. "As you know, with what is coming, we need every advantage we can get, and before the clock chimes, we need to know that our technologies can work, and work well."
"I see, sir. Permission to inspect the ship?" Shepard asked, and after being granted it, finally left to see what her vessel was all about it.
"Your thoughts about her?" Harper asked Eva.
"Her file is on point about her, and she should've been made a Captain a while ago, with her characteristics." Eva commented. "She can handle this mission."
"Good. Now, what's the status on the Shanxi operation?" Harper asked.
Gorgon System. Shanxi.
"Now, onto the galactic news. Union's survey Frigate USS Madrid has returned from Pranas System and has now confirmed that the system is free from virus. According to the survey, the last of the electronic devises have stopped functioning, hence the virus ran it's course. Concerning planet Sur'Kesh, it is now an unrecognizable rocky wasteland, according to the reports, with the sole population consisting of the feral and mutated Rachni. A joint Citadel-Union Commission will be formed to determine the status of the Pranas System and whether or not continue enforcing it's quarantine." The news anchor reported. "Although the Salarian Ambassador Parnu Vek had demanded immediate opening of the Pranas System, due to it being a Mass Relay hub, sitting in the center of the Salarian Space, hence it's vital worth to the Salarians. Though his concerns were noted, Turian Councilor Crassian reiterated the joint statement of Primarch Fedorian and Chancellor Drake in regards to the Pranas System from 6 months ago."
"Speaking of the Salarians, the situation within the Salarian Colonies continues to deteriorate, and despite the enforced peace by the Turians one year ago, all signs point to the renewal of hostilities. Private sources claim that the Colonies are militarizing and secret fleets are being constructed in violation of the established rules. It would seem that the fragile Salarian Union is about to collapse again into civil war, as waves of political assassinations continue to plague the region. Citizens of the Union are advised to avoid travelling into Salarian Space or systems connecting them." News anchor continued the report. "Commanding officer of the Union's 2nd Fleet, Admiral Alexei Orlov has confirmed the increase in patrol squadrons and issued an early warning for all travelling in and out of Salarian Space ships. We are observing the situation and will inform you of any changes."
"Yet the political instability doesn't end with just the Salarians, as the Asari Republics appear to be heading into the same direction, as it's newly formed Parliament is unable to come to unanimous decisions. With the elimination of the Matriarchy and reveal of their crimes, various political groups have gained massive popularity and have swollen with members, and these factions encompass nearly every corner of the political spectrum, from spiritualistic conservatives to radical militarists and social democrats and more." News report continued to be played. "Though the political situation remains largely non-violent, the political instability compounds the ongoing economic and social crisis of the Asari Republics, as the factions are unable to come to terms with necessary reforms. This forces the impoverished and destitute Asari to leave their homes, with the Asari Republics reporting over 10 million Asari have left their Space, and more are projected to leave, with their destinations ranging wildly, though over 30 percent of them have migrated into IHU. It is becoming an increasingly common sight around the Human colonies, to see Asari, who are slowly but surely integrating into our society, with most of them now recognized as Union's citizens on equal grounds as Quarians and Humans. Initial tensions are subsiding now, and it is safe to say that these former refugees and immigrants are now fully fledged Union citizens."
"And now, onto the main news today: the 10th Anniversary of the First Contact War. Commemorating this occasion will be the ceremony of Etruria's complete reconstruction, on which Chancellor Drake and Primarch Fedorian will be present to…" After that, the man turned off the radio and began to assemble his sniper rifle.
The wake of the conclusion of First Contact War, in which Humanity had been attacked and hundreds of thousands of Humans were massacred, many Humans saw all aliens as monsters, oppressors and enemies, and so this led to the formation of great many radical pro-Human factions, many of which were bent to either subjugate or destroy aliens. Jefferson Stephens was among the former, as he believed that Humanity was above all others and that it was confirmed by the God's Word, and so all other races were below them.
A member of the now extinct cast of southern North America's wealthy high class, former plantation and slave owners that were the founders of the Confederacy, Jefferson viewed his past ancestors not with regret or shame, but with pride, as he was brought up by what modern people would describe as "bigoted, old money aristocrats." While he was wealthy, Stephens political and social vies made him an outcast, until after the First Contact War, where he found himself a member of a prominent pro-Humanity faction, which opposed the Alliance and their puppeteers. They, like many more like them, patiently waited for a chance to change history, and when it came, they seized it. With many wealthy supporters from colonies, they were poised to take control of the North American States, had it not been for the Cerberus and future PDF forces.
Stephens' faction was obliterated, with him barely making out alive thanks to his family's connections, and he had to watch as Humanity was unified under Alexander Drake, the man that he and his friends viewed as something of an icon. Yet soon he cursed that name, as he started playing friends with Turians, opening borders for Asari whores and even having the gall to claim that the Salarians sponsored all the noble sons and daughters of Earth that dared to rise up against tyrants and xenophiles. Stephens rejected this as hogwash, and so he continued to wait for his chance to shine and strike against traitors of humanity.
And now was his chance, as a fellow pro-Human supporter had found him and provided him with funds and resources to change the course of history. Today, his name will be remembered alongside the same legends as John Wilks Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, as he pointed his sniper rifle and aimed it at Alexander Drake, who was in the middle of giving a speech. Just as he moved his finger to the trigger, a tranquilizer dart hit him in the neck, and put the radical to sleep, with three Cerberus operatives moving to check on him.
"Pack him up." Their commander ordered. "Call the clean up crew, we are done here. Mission is a success." He announced, and so Cerberus began to clear the area of any and all presence.
Etruria.
"…And now, I would like to give word to the man who contributed to this restoration project, and who spared no expense in seeing it completed. Leader of the Turian Hierarchy, Primarch Fedorian." Alexander Drake then allowed Fedorian to take center stage, as the two leaders shook hands, and then Fedorian prepared to deliver his speech.
"First of all, I wish to thank Chancellor Drake for a chance to contribute in this initiative, as well as for his good words. I know that he, like many others who lived here have every right to mistrust and even outright despise me and my people for what had happened… And they all would be justified in this." Fedorian spoke with the public listening. "Ten years ago, our races made First Contact with each other, and in that contact, much blood was spilled, both Human and Turian, yet we, the Turians were the first ones to strike, and to wage open war upon you. In that war, ambition, greed and arrogance guided leaders of the Turian Hierarchy, and in our hubris, we've demonstrated the worse qualities of our race… Yet in that same conflict we witnessed the very best qualities of Humanity: stalwartness, determination, unbending will and perseverance, willingness to go above and beyond your abilities to succeed."
"Those are the qualities that have allowed you withstand the onslaught of the Blitz and saw you leading the charge against the Matriarchy, where both Turian and Human fleets, men and women fought together side by side. Our First Contact was mired with blood of thousands of innocents and Turian unprovoked viciousness, but today, after our shared blood was spilled on Thessia and Asari Space, we stand together not as enemies, but as allies and equals." Fedorian spoke with pride and vigor. "This city once stood as a monument to our cruelty, but as of today, it becomes a new symbol, a symbol of our new, shared future as equal friends in peace and war. And as the Turian Hierarchy helped rebuild Etruria, so too it will stand with Human Union and work together towards a prosperous future." Fedorian finished his speech, and a round of applause was heard far and wide afterwards.
Sometime later.
"An impressive speech, Primarch." Alex Drake commented, as he, Fedorian and many officials from all over Citadel Space and Union attended the banquet.
"Thank you, Chancellor, though I fear it did fall a little short before yours." Fedorian noted, as the people around them chatted and talked, with music playing around them, yet the reporters taking shots of them. "I have to wonder, who do you pay to write you speeches."
"I could give you the number, but I fear I charge a steep fee." Alex joked, and Fedorian chuckled. "Still, it was quite impressive, Primarch. I was surprised when you've mentioned the fact that I lived here."
"Yes, and you've had to suffer through the invasion. I've read about it, and I must say, I can't imagine the horror of what it was like to endure it all, not to mention caring for your younger sister at the same time." Fedorian admitted. "You have had every reason to despise us, and yet, thanks to you, we now stand as equal allies and friends, and this city is the symbol of it."
"Well, some would say we Humans are mercurial like that, but I like to think that we possess an ability to grow and change over time, become better of ourselves." Alex commented, with Fedorian agreeing with him, as the two moved forward, before coming upon the governor and Senator of Shanxi. "Governor Williams, Senator Monroe."
"Chancellor Drake, Primarch Fedorian." Andrew Williams nodded to both.
"Gentlemen." Fedorian responded, before he caught on to something. "General Williams, I have heard a great deal about you, both as a military specialist and a politician. They say that you've laid the foundation of Union Marines, and are the reason for Shanxi's prosperity."
"They exaggerate, on both accounts." Williams responded. "Shanxi owes it's current wealth and abundance to it's people and their dedication to the common good, and as for the Marines, I can hardly recognize them when compared to those of my time, and I'd imagine that even PDF could prove a serious opponent to them."
"Both of the Union's military branches, along with the Navy, are held in the highest regard within the Hierarchy, and their effectiveness is hard to deny, when seeing the results of their actions." Fedorian noted. "And though they were inherited from the Alliance, I believe they fully came into their own under the Union's leadership."
"A statement which much of the Senate supports, Primarch." Senator Monroe responded. "I know it is not polite to speak ill of the dead, but under the Alliance's Parliament and Prime Minister, we could hardly get anything done. Most of the time those bigwigs were more concerned with appearances, rather than actual work. Had it not been for the Chancellor back then, our colonies would still be living in prefab boxes instead of proper houses with all amenities a civilized world enjoys."
"If you say so, Senator." Drake merely replied, before he turned to Williams. "Though people themselves too deserve credit, along with their leaders. Speaking of leaders, should I extend my congratulations early, Governor?" Alex hinted at his re-election next week.
"The votes are yet to be counted for, so let's not tempt fate." Williams commented.
"More like bore her with known facts." Monroe commented, hinting at Williams' popularity. "As if anyone could ever hope to compete with the Governor here. Without even considering his military contributions, his service record as a governor alone is enough to secure victory. Besides, would you want someone like Goyle's puppet governing Shanxi, like on Bekenstein? Just look what that once promising and prospering colony has degraded into…" Monroe shook his head at the mention of that planet, which now was a symbolic ghost of Alliance and worst aspects of it.
"At the rate the situation deteriorates there, the Union will have to directly get involved in their affairs." Williams noted.
"My Cabinet and I already working on the solution. Rest assured, just because Bekenstein prefers to emulate ways of the Alliance, does not exclude them from Humanity and the Union and I…" At that point, Alex was stopped when one of his aides came to him.
"My apologies, Chancellor, but there is a call for you, marked as urgent." Drake immediately excused himself. "It was transmitted into the study." Drake moved there, and took the call, displaying Jack Harper before him.
"Chancellor, I hope I'm not interrupting anything important." Jack said.
"I was just discussing the situation around Bekenstein with Governor Williams and his Senator." Drake responded. "I assume this is about that assassination attempt on my life?"
"It is. We've got the would-be assassin, he was about to take his shot at you during your speech." Harper reported, with Drake raising one brow up.
"That's a bit of a surprise, Harper. Usually, these would-be assassins don't get so far." Drake noted. "What took you so long to take him?"
"Difficulty in locating him, as there were many vantage points from which to take that shot, and he did bring a very high caliber rifle." Harper reported. "But we got him, and you were protected by a kinetic barrier that could stop a tank round."
"True. Did you get anything out of him yet?" Alex asked of him.
"Our specialists are only starting with him, but as we can tell, he is definitely not, what you would describe as sensible human being. Aside from him being a radical of worst kind, he also has delusions of grandeur and a warped perception of past and present. Apparently, he views himself as a Confederate hero, fighting for freedom or something and regards people like Wilkes Booth and Harvey Oswald as slayers of tyrants." Harper let out a humorless chuckle. "I guess this is the last of the Southern People's Union we have to deal with."
"Anything else of worth I should know of?" Alex asked of him.
"We've got his money trails and are tracing it. I believe in a few days we will know everything." Harper said. "And on a different note, Captain Shepard has received her assignment and is now inspecting her new vessel. Eva believes that the Belfast is in good hands with her."
"I agree with her on that. She is capable, resourceful and an experienced officer." Alex stated. "Admirals Drake and Hojo are of high opinion about her, and it was her idea to use the magnetic field of Thessia for Delta Battlegroup to come undetected."
"I know, and I am also of the same opinion as all of you." Jack said. "Also, regarding those Shu Qian's research and files that you wanted us to look at - you were right, the man was clearly working with Reaper technology, and Saren Arterius was attempting to find it, which is why he destroyed that facility on Camala, to cover up his tracks."
"But the trail remains?" Alex asked of him, with Harper nodding. "Then proceed with the investigation. If Vendetta's information about the Reapers is correct, then they have a vanguard deployed somewhere in the galaxy, which will attempt to bring the rest of them here. If we find him, we'll win ourselves time to prepare."
"Agreed, but do you still plan to tell the Primarch about it all?" Harper asked of Drake.
"Otherwise I would not have arranged for our presence here today." Alex responded, before ending the call.
Several hours later.
"Here, Primarch." Rhea Grissom led Fedorian into a study before closing the doors behind them, with Alex Drake already waiting for them.
"Chancellor Drake, your Secretary of State stated that there was something of paramount importance you wished to share with me, and that only I could know of it." Fedorian said. "I am not the kind of person to appreciate secrets, Chancellor, and I do not partake in such affairs… But I do owe to you to listen to what you have to say."
"I can assure you, Primarch, that if the situation wasn't paramount, we would not have disturbed you in the middle of night." Alex said. "Over a year ago, we learned that the Matriarchy have held in their possession an intact and active Prothean beacon, which they destroyed rather than have it fall into hands of others."
"Yes, I remember seeing it's remains. What of it?" Fedorian said, before Alex activated his omni-tool, and then before the three appeared Vendetta, shocking Turian Primarch. "S-Spirits… I-is that what I think it is?"
"A fully functioning Prothean Virtual Intelligence, a neural imprint of one of their greatest scientists, and also holder of their knowledge, including the reason for their extinction." Alex stated, with Fedorian at a loss for words. "Primarch Fedorian, meet Vendetta."
"Vendetta?" Fedorian asked, as he looked at the green hologram. "Why is it called like that?"
"Because I am the last vestige of the Protheans and their desire for vengeance against the Reapers." Vendetta answered. "My goal was to help guide the chosen leader race of this Cycle, but they have been judged as incapable of being an effective force against the Reapers. Humanity and Turians are deemed worthy of receiving necessary information."
"What is it talking about?" Fedorian asked of Drake.
"You will see." Drake told him. "Vendetta, start from the beginning, from the Reapers…"
Arcturus Stream. Arcturus System. USS Drake. 2168 CE. Three months after the anniversary.
"The construction of the Kronos Station proceeding per schedule, if not a little faster. With the central module complete and the access beams under construction, current estimates for completion are around late 2169." Ishtar informed Admiral Drake, as they observed a small armada of construction ships working on the new station. "Furthermore, we have confirmed that the debris field of Arcturus Station and First Fleet have been fully cleared. Their remains were recycled and used in the construction of the Kronos Station, as well as Atlas Station in new Swabia System, which is slated to be finished in 2170."
"It took the Alliance 9 years to construct Arcturus Station, and now we are constructing 2 space stations that are double its size in just under 3 years." Admiral Drake commented, as he looked at the plans for the stations. "The scale is above anything that the Alliance would have attempted, and they only allowed the Skyfall Station to be constructed because it was becoming and necessity, and because Alex paid for everything."
"And now these stations are a necessity as well, considering the vital importance of the Arcturus and Swabia Systems. The first one guards Mass Relay Alpha Prime, as well as connects western interior with exterior and frontier, while the other is connects eastern frontier to the exterior, and serves as a major trading hub." Ishtar reminded him, as she deactivated the holo projector. "Defense of those points, as well as successful facilitation of transportation and trade is of vital importance to the stability of the Union and Humanity. Not to mention that we do need more shipyards, if we are to continue successful expansion."
"I agree, and those stations have some of the biggest ones, outside of Skyfall and Saturnine Docks." Arthur noted, as he and Ishtar de- factor concluded their meeting. "Then I assume all is going apace?"
"Yes, Admiral. You may rest assured that the 1st Fleet will soon have a new harbor to call home, if that is what you are concerned about." Ishtar said. "If that is all, Admiral, I shall not take up anymore of your time."
"Actually, I do have a question, off the books and outside of line of duty." Arthur stopped Ishtar, who looked a little surprised at his words, but nodded. "How are things between you and Alex?" He asked her directly, which made Ishtar raise one brow up, yet she remained composed.
"I was not aware you were the kind to look for gossip, Admiral." She admitted with a dry tone.
"I'm simply interested in my son's personal life, as his father, and considering your unusual relationship with him, I want to make sure everything is alright." Arthur responded.
"Well, there is not so much out of the ordinary in our with Alex relationship, safe for the polyamorous status, which, mind you, Humans did and still do practice." Ishtar told Arthur. "But to ease your mind, Admiral, I will tell you that I, as well as my sister and Rhea, are perfectly happy and content with Alex and our current status. We know he loves us all equally, and we love him, simple as that."
"Forgive me if I doubt it is as simple as that." Arthur remarked, with Ishtar shrugging at it.
"Well, we prefer to keep it simple, without overcomplicating things, and we know that Alex wouldn't do anything that would ever hurt us in any form or manner." Ishtar assured Arthur. "I hope you do not mind that I'll not divulge more… intimate parts of our relations."
"Not at all." Arthur simply said with a sigh. "Then, all is good?"
"Quite so, except for a bit of fatigue in the morning." Ishtar said with a bit of a smirk, while Arthur simply closed his eyes at that. "Sorry, I couldn't resist."
"I can see why you and Morgan get along so famously." Arthur commented, before he and Ishtar heard a call over loudspeaker.
"Bridge to Admiral. Sir, we have a potentially hostile situation near Mass Relay Epsilon. Please come to the bridge." The call ended, and Drake adopted a serious look, as he activated his omni-tool.
"I am on my way." He said, before he turned to Ishtar. "Please return to your assigned quarters." He asked of her, and Ishtar nodded, as they departed the conference room and Drake quickly reached the bridge.
"Admiral on the bridge." One of the officers announced.
"At ease. What is going on?" Arthur demanded, as he walked to the holo projector, displaying a map of the system.
"Nine minutes ago, an Indochina-class cargo transport entered into our system, reading critical damage to it's hull and systems, and three minutes ago, three Mantis-class Frigates jumped into our system through the same relay." Captain David Anderson reported to Admiral Drake. "4th Patrol Squadron under Captain Hackett's command moved to ascertain the situation, and have now positioned themselves between the frigates and the cargo transport. The transponder codes read those vessels as belonging to the Asari Navy."
"Have you tried hailing them?" Drake asked of him.
"Yes, but they've ignored all hails, and are closing within the weapons' range." Anderson stated, with Drake taking a second to evaluate the situation. "Hackett's last report indicated that the damage on the cargo transport was inflicted by frigate caliber guns, same ones that are on the Asari ship. He has dispatched engineering and medical crews to it, since it couldn't respond to hails, but is still operational, and has used signal lights for a communication, requesting immediate help."
"Red alert, move Drake and 1st and 3rd Task Forces to link up with the 4th Squadron." Drake commanded, and as Anderson gave out orders on the bridge, the fleet moved to position, quickly getting in place. "Status of the cargo ship?"
"Ship's engines have failed. It is now adrift, with life support barely operable." Sensors officer reported to Drake. "Sir, reading new signals entering our system through the Epsilon Relay. Confirming 11 new signals, 5 Cruisers and 6 Frigates, all Asari Navy signals and codes, sir."
"Send a tug to tow the transport out immediately, and have the fleet assume blocking position." Drake commanded. "Open up all frequencies and transmit the following message: "This is Admiral Arthur Drake of Union 1st Fleet. You are in violation of Interstellar Human Union's borders. Cease all movement and open a channel on open frequency in 60 seconds after receiving this message. Fail to do so, and we will regard you as hostiles and will take every appropriate action to stop you, over." Drake commanded and the comms did so, and after half a minute, the Asari finally complied.
"Sir, we are being hailed by their lead ship on open frequency." Comms reported, and Arthur Drake ordered it received.
"Admiral Drake, this is Commodore Tarissa of the ASV Marnae. Please rest assured, Admiral, our quarrel is not with your or with the Human Union. We pursue the cargo vessel, which your ships deny us access to by blocking our path. Withdraw your ships, and we can avoid any unfortunate accidents." Drake and other heard her proud and even slightly condescending tone, which didn't deter Drake.
"I cannot do that, not unless you explain your intentions and reasons for pursuing and attacking that ship." Drake stated. "And before you decide on not providing this information, keep in mind, that by violating our borders by entering here with military vessels, you have committed an open hostile action against Human Union. This gives me full right to open fire and wipe you out for good, so I suggest you convince me not to do so." After a bit of a pause, the Asari Commander responded.
"This ship has taken aboard dangerous fugitives and enemies of the Asari state, and has refused to hand them over when demanded. We were left with no choice but to attack it." Commodore answered, with Drake raising a brow at that. "Rest assured, Admiral, we are acting within our authority and duties towards the Asari Republics and Citadel."
"Do you have proof of your words?" Drake asked of her.
"Our word is all you need, Admiral." She stated with arrogance. "Admiral Drake, by impeding us and our duty, you risk provoking a conflict with the Asari Republics and Citadel. You would be wise to stand down."
"And by carrying out an unprovoked attack on a civilian Union vessel, under unconfirmed pretense, you invite conflict with the Union." Drake stated back, before he turned to his officers. "Do we have comms restored on the cargo ship?"
"No, sir, no direct link, but we do have contact with the engineering and medical crews. Sir, they are confirming over 1200 Asari passengers on it, all civilians, many malnourished and suffering from illnesses, all of different ages, from Matriarchs to little children." Comms reported, before adding. "Sir, one of the Asari wishes to speak to us."
"Let her." Drake asked, as the comm line was established. "This Admiral Arthur Drake of 1st Union Fleet, can you hear me?"
"Y-yes, Admiral, I can hear you. P-Please, Admiral, me and the others… W-we are requesting asylum within the Human Union from the Asari government." The pleading and begging voice of the Asari was heard by all on the bridge. "Please, A-Admiral, w-we mean you no harm! W-we escaped the Asari Space b-because o-of the p-purges… O-our only sin i-is that we were born A-Ardat-Yakshi, a-and now w-we are being e-either left t-to die or w-worse… Please, Admiral…" The cries of the Asari were interrupted by Commodore Tarissa.
"Admiral Drake, you are interfering with Asari business of internal nature. I order you to allow us to pass and destroy that vessel for breaking our laws, or we will…" Before the Asari could finish, Drake spoke up.
"I do not plan to submit to this ultimatum, and here is my own: turn back and leave this system now, or be prepared to face the consequences." Drake stated, as he received firing confirmation. "My Fleet's armaments are all targeting your vessels, and are prepared to open fire. We will overwhelm your shields and destroy you under a second, unless you comply."
"You would risk war with us?" She asked of him in a haughty tone.
"You should've asked that question before you opened fire on our civilian ship. You have thirty seconds for a response." Drake commanded.
"Sir, they are powering their engines." Sensors reported. "Confirming, the Asari flotilla is proceeding towards the Epsilon Relay."
"You will regret this decision, Admiral Drake. When those demons ravage your worlds, you will beg your Gods of deliverance, and remember how we were ready to save you from them." Tarissa stated in ominous tone, before departing the system, with Arthur letting out a sigh.
"Get me a line to Chancellor in the conference room, and send a medical ship to the cargo transport, and order them to activate quarantine protocols." Arthur ordered. "Looks like there is something very wrong within the Asari Republics…" Arthur commented, as he departed for the conference room.
Three hours later. Skyfall Station. Union Spire.
"Councilor Tevos, when I've opened Union borders and resumed commerce with the Citadel Space, the last thing I expected is for our civilian ships to become targets for Asari war hawks." By his tone, Tevos understood that Alex Drake was not pleased with the situation. "I hope you have a good explanation as to how was this travesty allowed to happen."
"Chancellor Drake, please allow me to assure you, that the Asari Parliament and our Prime Minister had no hostile intentions towards Human Union or Humanity in general. This entire affair has been one unfortunate and…" Tevos was about to continue, but Drake stopped her.
"Councilor, I want a clear and crisp explanation, not empty posturing and flowery words." Drake stated to her with a tone of finality. "After the war with the Matriarchy, I was perfectly content to adopt a non-interference policy towards your people and Salarians, and though your refugees flock to my words, they are welcomed and adapt quite splendidly to our rules. Because of that, I maintained my current non-interference policy, but in light of today's events, I am starting to think, that we may need to take a more active interest in the Asari internal affairs. I assume that this is something you would wish to avoid." Drake's dead serious tone left no doubt as to validity of his words.
"Yes, Chancellor Drake, it would be regrettable if Human Union were to… take an interest in our internal affairs." Councilor Tevos agreed with him, and after a long sigh, spoke up. "Due to the ongoing unstable situation within our Space, certain elements of our society are have attempted to leave our space, which could not be allowed to happen. Members of our military were ordered to detain and return them to the places of their living, but some of the more… zealous members of our military have misinterpreted the orders and it's intentions."
"Those "elements" you have mentioned are the Ardat-Yakshi, which loosely translates from Naurisa's dialect as: "Demon of the Night Winds," am I correct?" Drake asked of Tevos, who was surprised by his knowledge. "And behind that poetic name hides a genetic condition, which causes a neural and sensory overload during mating, meaning that any person that an Asari with this condition decides to mate with will die, while she receives a euphoric experience, not unlike to what one can get from taking the most powerful drugs."
"You… You are unusually well informed on the matter." Tevos noted. "Ardat-Yakshi are as old as the Asari race itself, and they have caused a great deal of suffering to our people over millennia before we achieve spaceflight. After we've founded colonies, we put them in isolated monasteries, where they could comfortably live out their lives with all amenities of the civilization and peace."
"Apparently that is no longer the case, as those fugitives state that your military isn't just detaining them, but outright killing them en mass." Drake remarked, with Tevos stiffening. "Just because I abstain from active involvement in the galactic affairs, doesn't mean I am not aware of what is happening. I know that your Republics are in a state of crisis that makes pre-Civil War Russia look like a pre-schoolyard fight. Zealous and religious fanatics are driving your masses into an uncontrollable frenzy, while your political parties are tearing apart your republics, all the while the people and colonies suffer from economic instability, work, food and resource shortages and are leaving en mass. As of the beginning of this month, the total population of the Asari in IHU has exceeded 8.7 million citizens, and 4.2 million fugitives. Primarch Fedorian has expressed to me in a private communication that if the situation becomes as bad as it is now in Salarian Space, he and the Turian Hierarchy will intervene, in military fashion. Moreover, as an ally of the Hierarchy, we will be obliged and eager to assist them in this, and remind your more 'zealous' and 'spiritualistic' elements the benefits of a secular society and introduce them to a concept we Humans call "secular humanism." The hidden threat was not lost to Tevos, who inhaled slowly.
"This will not be necessary. Our people are familiar with those concepts." Tevos informed him. "Returning to those Asari…"
"They are currently being treated on board a medical ship, guarded by the elements of the 1st Fleet, and their request for asylum has been granted. As for their genetic condition, we have the means to grant them reprieve from it and allow them to enjoy their lives in full." Drake revealed in a casual tone to Tevos, who lost ability to speak for a moment. "And as for this incident, I assume we can expect reparations in full to the wounded party, formal apologies to them, and punishments of the highest order to those who instigated this entire debacle?"
"It… Would be somewhat problematic to accomplish all that you ask, Chancellor." Tevos stated with a sigh, before adding. "But I am certain that the Parliament will do it's best to accommodate your request…"
"I very much hope so. Otherwise, we will be more than happy to collect all of those ourselves." Drake assured Tevos. "And one last thing, Councilor."
"Yes, Chancellor?" Tevos asked of him.
"Clean up your house. Both Primarch and I currently have more pressing matters than to play kindergarten teachers with your leaders." Alex Drake stated to her in an open and frank manner. "We already have one civil war waging in the galaxy with the Salarians. We will not tolerate two. Is that clear?"
"Crystal, Chancellor." Tevos stated.
"Good. You have two years to get your affairs in order." And with that, Alex hung up on her, as he let out a frustrated sigh. "If this was what Humanity had to deal with in my universe… Then I can understand Father's position regarding Xenos during the Great Crusade. You can't have any problem with Xenos' politics if there are no Xenos to speak of." Sanguinius said to himself, as he departed his private office to attend other matters.
Terminus Systems. Omega Nebula. Sahrabarik System. Omega Station.
"We've installed the new construction modules and are preparing to lay down the new ships." Aria listened to the report of one of her lackeys, as she observed the work on her much more expanded shipyards and docks. "As for refits, they are proceeding apace, but there is a certain issue we are starting to encounter…"
"What issue?" Aria asked of him, before he gave her the pad and she read what it was. "Niobium shortage? I thought you said we had enough to outfit the fleet."
"Enough for the fleet, but not for your new dreadnaughts." One of Asari shipbuilders stated to Aria, who turned to her with an angry eye. "I-I mean, the Destiny Ascension-class requires more resources than we previously thought. W-We could always fall back on an already tested Benevolent-class and that…"
"No, I want those super dreadnaughts, and I will have them." Aria stated. "Expand the niobium mining operations. Buy more slaves from the Batarians and the Traverse."
"Yes ma'am." Her Batarian lackey said. "We could always use those captured human colonists. There's well over 300 hundred thousand of them and…"
"No, those Humans are not going into the mines." Aria stated, surprising them, before she elaborated. "I've reached out to someone who was interested in them, and they agreed to pay a very good price for them. Something, that will make those Drake men quiver with fear when I get to them." Aria said with a vicious smirk, looking out into void of space, right where the Omega-4 Relay was located.
Satisfied with the future prospects, she turned back her attention to massive shipyards and docks, expanded and enlarged several times over, observing the massive military buildup that she had initiating, at first to have her revenge on humans. But now, after the collapse of the Matriarchy and the Salarian Union now descended into a civil war, she had much bigger plans now, plans that saw her become far more than just a ruler of a lone space station.
All this time she spent consolidating as much power in her hands as possible, first through luring biggest Terminus players onto Omega and exposing of them, taking control of as much of their assets as possible, and then either subjugating, or destroying everyone who didn't agree with her. Last two years were among the bloodiest in the history of the Terminus Systems, as entire pirate armadas fought each other in a bid for power. Yet Aria did prevail, and now she could be called the undisputed ruler of the Terminus Systems, and so she began to build her "kingdom" into a proper galactic power.
With the abundance of resources, ample workforce in slaves and willing bodies to join, all she needed are scientists, designers and other people with a mind for such things. Fortunately for her, the Asari Republic were in such chaos, that people were literally running away from there, and so she managed to grab herself some of Matriarchy's best scientific minds, and along with them came plans for new ships of all kinds. The most promising of those projects was the Destiny Ascension-class, the one ship that could truly destroy entire fleets all by itself, and the future flagship of Aria's fleets.
And once she had traded captured Humans for the tech she wishes, nothing will stand in her way and Aria will truly become the Queen. At least this what Aria had believed, yet unbeknownst to her, a single vessel, hidden from all scanners, was observing everything that was happening, and mapping out the future course of the upcoming campaign.
A bit on the shorter side chapter and though it shows how things are in the galaxy, I hope it will be to your liking. Not much else to say, so I will keep it brief.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter and will leave your review, suggestions and questions about the story, for your contributions help make it better.
