"Oi! Where're you taking that?" Owen demanded as Ianto picked up the latest item to come through the Rift.
"Down to the archives for cataloguing of course."
"That's a waste of time, isn't it? Just chuck the junk in a corner and leave it, throw it out as soon at the Rift energy dissipates. With Jack gone you don't have time to fiddle."
Ianto rolled his eyes. "It's alien tech, Owen, it can't be thrown out. The alloys it's made from don't exist on earth."
"But it's useless!"
"Few things that come through the Rift are useless. If it was an old iron bedstead or something like that, you'd have a point. Stuff like that goes to the scrap metal merchant every few months, but anything alien has to stay here."
"So you're saying the archives are full of rubbish that doesn't work?"
"I prefer to think of it as a useful source of spare parts. You know that medical scanner you love so much?"
"What of it?"
"That only works because I was able to scavenge suitable replacement components from what's in the archives. Half the tech we use was made from spare parts. Be thankful we've got them."
