Chapter 1

Anne Shirley didn't like wearing dark colors, especially for funerals. She had only been to one funeral and that was back when Matthew had died. She wore a black hat and dress. That color combination definitely matched her mood she was feeling that day - sad and depressed. That's how she is feeling today. She was hoping she wouldn't have to feel these feelings again at least not for a long time. She was only 22 years old.

Anne was getting ready for the service of her dead husband. She was sitting in the church with her young daughter who was only 6 years old. Her daughter is the splitting image of Anne herself. She had red hair, freckles and Anne even had braided her daughter's hair into her two braids just like Anne had done when she was a child. Then Anne had tied a black ribbon to hold her daughter's braids in lace.

Anne didn't want her daughter to have to wear black to a funeral. Black is a depressing color. Instead, she had her daughter wear a deep, dark, purple colored dress. The only exception Anne had was her daughter's hair ribbon that was black.

Anne's daughter Naomi, was pressed into her mother side. Her eyes were wide but her face expression was sad. She understood a little bit that her daddy wasn't coming back but hadn't fully understood why he wasn't coming back. She only knew that he had gone away and will be gone for a long time.

Anne looked at her daughter's sad face and rubbed her daughter's back. Anne's heart broke, but she wasn't that sad that Roy had died. Marrying Roy was the biggest mistake that Anne had made. Which put a big strain on Anne and Roy's relationship. Anne only stuck around with Roy because of Naomi.

Anne was young when her and Roy got married. Anne quickly got pregnant only a couple of months after they married and by the time early spring came, little Naomi was born.

Was it strange that Anne didn't feel a hint of sadness that he died? She supposed it was strange. She hadn't really cried and Roy's family was surprised at Anne's emotionless reaction. Yes, she was sad but sad for her sake of her daughter.

The only people that new about Anne and Roy's relationship problems was Diana and Roy's mother and sisters but they never brought it up when Naomi was around.

Anne felt a tugging on her arm and she looked down at her daughter. Naomi was crying and Anne hadn't even heard her.

"Oh sweetheart, come here. We are going to be okay." Anne murmured softly.

Naomi crawled into her mother's lap and cried into her chest. Anne stroked her daughter's hair.

"I don't want Papa to be away forever momma. I want him to stay here with us. Why is he in that box on the table?" Naomi sniffed.

Anne inhaled a sharp breath. "Well, your Papa is inside the box because he is resting. He is sleeping. Uncle Fred and some of your Pops friends are going to carry the box he is in and we are going to bury the box and..."

Naomi looked up at her mother startled. "No momma. You can't bury the box in the ground! Papa is in it! He wouldn't be able to breathe!"

How can Anne explain this as gently to her daughter? Think Anne. Use that imagination of yours!

Naomi was looking at her father that was inside the "box". To her, it looked like her Papa was just sleeping but the whole time Naomi and her momma had been at the church, her Papa had been in the box and he hadn't moved at all. Just laid there with his hands over his chest and his eyes closed.

"Sweetheart, your Papa can't feel anything anymore. He is inside the special box called a coffin. Do you see those handles on the side? That's to have Pops friends help carry his coffin to the burial site. The burial site is a special hole that you place the coffin in. Your Papa won't feel anything. He won't feel the coffin being carried, he won't feel the coffin being buried into the special hole. Once the coffin is in the hole, we will put dirt on top of it. We can leave flowers too." Ann explained softly.

"So, so, Papa will be able to just sleep under ground? He won't feel anything? He won't have trouble breathing because he is buried?" Naomi asked.

Anne by this point was holding her daughter. Naomi's tears had soaked Anne's dress, but Anne didn't care. She was comforting her daughter.

"That's right sweetheart. His body has stopped working completely. Once he is buried, he will be able to rest peacefully." Anne said.

"I miss him momma." Naomi whimpered.

"I know darling girl. I miss him too." Anne said.

Anne was broken out of her thoughts when she heard a soft whimper and turned to see Naomi. Her daughter was crying and Anne could tell that something was on Naomi's mind.

"What is sweetheart?" Anne asked gently.

"Papa always tucked me in at night and read me stories momma. It isn't fair. He is supposed to be here too. Just like you. He was supposed to help take care of me. He promised me he would never leave me. He lied momma. He left me and he left you. Who will tuck me in at night momma? Who will read to me? Papa was always at the door with open arms when you and I would come home from going to see Aunt Marilla. He would always ask how our trip was. Papa would always have a bouquet of flowers for each of us when we came home. He won't do that anymore because he is in there." Naomi sobbed pointing to the box.

Anne was quite taken a back with what Naomi just said. That was one reason why she didn't leave Roy like she had wanted too. Roy and Naomi had a strong relationship. Whenever Roy's mother would scold Naomi for being too noisy, talkative and not acting like a proper lady and so on, Naomi would run to her daddy and he would comfort her and promised he would talk to his mother. Naomi would go to Anne too of course, but Roy could talk firmly to his mother explaining that Naomi was only 6 years old. Roy's mother couldn't possibly expect Naomi to act like a little lady at that age. Roy's mother would just huff and glare at Naomi.

"I know darling girl. I miss him too but we will be okay. I have plans for us and I'll explain everything this evening, okay?" Anne said.

"Okay momma." Naomi mumbled.

Anne and Naomi were both staring at the coffin that was holding Roy's body. Anne realized this was Naomi's first time seeing a dead person and it happened to be her daddy. Anne looked at Naomi and was waiting for all the questions to come out about death and what happens to the body.

Anne herself had only experienced death once. That was when Matthew died unexpectedly right in Anne's arm. Matthew and Anne were bringing in the sheep from the field when Anne saw Matthew start to walk funny and Anne realized something was terribly wrong. She quickly ran to him and she caught him in her arms before they both hit the ground.

Naomi saw Roy's death just like Anne saw Matthew's death. Roy and his mother were arguing about Anne not handling Naomi like a mother should and all of a sudden Roy dropped to the ground. Anne was in the room at the time and caught him in her arms just like she did Matthew.

Naomi was terrified and once she realized what happen to her daddy, she let out the biggest scream Anne had ever heard. Anne was shocked and so was Roy's mother. Roy's two older sisters came running into the room looking confused. Naomi was sitting next to Anne on the floor. Begging her daddy to come back.

Anne hadn't realized that someone was talking to her and gently shaking her shoulder to get her attention.

"Hmm. What?" Anne asked confused.

Anne didn't notice Diana coming into the room. She was lost in her memory when Roy had just sudden collapsed onto the grounds

"I'm sorry to say this Anne, but it's time for the service. Fred wanted me to come and get you and Naomi." Diana said softly.

An unexpected tear fell from Anne's eyes, taking her by surprise. She quickly wiped them away so Naomi wouldn't see her crying. That would just upset Naomi even more to see her momma crying.

Taking a deep breath, Anne stood up and gave Diana a small smile and then Anne turned towards Naomi.

"Okay sweetheart, it's time. Did you want to say goodbye to your daddy here while it's just us? You can." Anne said softly.

Naomi shook her head yes. Anne and Naomi got up from the bench and walked towards Roy's coffin. Anne placed some flowers on top of Roy so he was holding them.

Diana had brought over a small stool so Naomi could see Roy properly. Naomi looked at both Anne and Diana for permission to kiss her daddy goodbye.

Diana gave a small nod of her head yes while she was standing next to a quiet Anne. Anne was crying just a little bit at seeing Naomi having to say goodbye to her father.

Naomi stood on the stool and bent over to face Roy. She gently gave him a kiss on the forehead and said softly "I love your Papa. I'll never forget you. Rest in peace."

Anne was sobbing quietly into Diana shoulder. Watching Naomi saying good bye her daddy forever hurt Anne. Naomi was so young at having to do this.

Naomi got down from the stool and ran over to Anne and buried her face into Anne's tummy and cried.
