Summary: Nancy's vision from Vecna about her family comes true.
Requested by: Deja Vu
"I can't wait for things to go back to semi-normal."
Those were the naïve words that came from Nancy the morning of that fateful day.
She was in Johnathan's room, helping him unpack.
Looking back on it, those were some really stupid words.
Nothing would be normal.
Never again.
But in the moment, they seemed like the right choice. The couple had talked out their problems and now were just enjoying each others company.
Johnathan huffed. "Yeah, I know what you mean."
It had been a month since spring break, Max yet waking up, and Nancy's nightmares yet residing.
But everyone was surviving.
Barely.
The couple drifted in comfortable silence, putting Johnathan's things away in their rightful places.
Johnathan walked over to his cassette player, hitting play.
Time After Time filled the room, making Nancy smile.
"May have this dance?" Johnathan goofily asked.
Nancy giggled. "You may."
The two danced around the small room, swaying back and forth.
Such simple times.
The song switched to Should I Stay or Should I Go?, Nancy and Johnathan switching tempos.
Suddenly, the door burst open, revealing a very panicked Will.
"Geez Will, if you want me to change the song you could just ask." Johnathan scolded.
Will ignored his older brother. "Vecna... attacking... houses." he panted.
Nancy's blood went cold. "Wait, what?"
"I was helping mom," Will swallowed. "And my neck did the thing, but I got these weird visions though. Vecna's using the Upside-Down to attack homes."
Over the past month, El had been closing the gates that still lingered along Hawkins, while the residents fled the town.
But a lot of people stayed.
Including the Wheelers.
"Where's the Party at right now?" Johnathan asked urgently.
Will thought for a moment. "Most of them are at the cabin, I think. That's where mom is taking us. Lucas and Erica are probably at the hospital, but I think Steve's visiting today. I'm pretty sure that's it..."
"Mike's at home with the rest of my family." Nancy stated shakily.
The brothers went pale.
"Um, okay," Johnathan started. "I can go with Nancy to get them and we'll meet up with you guys."
"No." Nancy stated. "You guys get to the cabin, I'll go alone. I have some guns and stuff in my trunk if I need them."
Johnathan hesitated. "I don't know..."
"Please don't argue, that's only wasting time." Nancy protested.
Johnathan gave one last look and nodded.
The Byers filled their car, all making sure Nancy was okay going alone.
She waved as they drove off, heading to the cabin.
Nancy turned and popped her trunk.
Grabbing her pistol, she climbed in her car.
She had to go save her family.
Nancy sped down the deserted roads of Hawkins.
Nothing looked out of the ordinary, all the houses seemed sound.
But when she pulled on to her street, it was all but sound.
The Wheelers home was covered in vines, a dark cloud looming over the structure.
Nancy hastily pulled into the driveway, not bothering to see if she parked the car, and raced inside, gun in hand.
"Mike!?" she yelled. "Holly?! Mom!? Anyone?!"
Nancy desperately raced to her parents bedroom. She wrenched open the door, revealing a Karen Wheeler lying on the bed.
She wasn't moving.
"Mom?" Nancy moved towards her. "Mom! Please wake up! Wake up!"
Karen only stared at her daughter with cold, lifeless eyes. A red, angry gash was covering her torso. A demogorgon's doing.
A sob escaped out of Nancy.
While she wanted to sit here and grieve, she had to find the others.
Racing back into the living room, Nancy passed her Dad, laying in his recliner.
He was dead.
Nancy felt a small pang in her heart, but moved on quickly, hoping to find her siblings.
Checking her and Mike's rooms, she found nothing except vines.
But when she peeked in Holly's room, she gasped.
Her bright, little sister, was sprawled out next to her dollhouse. A dark ring stood out against her neck. She had been strangled by a vine.
Nancy dropped to her knees, laying Holly's head in her lap.
Tears fell quickly, Holly was so young. She didn't deserve to die.
Sitting in the deadly silence, Nancy remembered the one person of her family that could still be alive.
Nancy looked down at her baby sister, kissing her forehead before gently setting her down.
Racing down the stairs, Nancy went to the one place she had yet to check.
The basement.
"Mike!" she called as she reached the bottom of the stairs.
Scanning the dark basement, Nancy saw a lump near the fort.
The fort El had hid in.
Gosh, that felt like so long ago.
Shaking the thought out of her head, she ran to her brother, hoping he wasn't dead.
Flipping him over on his back, Nancy screamed when she saw her brother.
Mike looked a lot like Vecna's other victims, broken legs and arms, blood seeping out of his eyes. His jaw was still intact. Nancy was grateful for that small detail, feeling nauseous.
"No. NO!" she screamed, tears coming down at full force.
She looked down at her baby brother.
Smoothing back his hair, she started babbling, "Please don't leave me. Please. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Wake up, just wake up!"
The sobbing girl didn't know how long she sat there, but it felt like eternity.
A familiar voice finally cut of her mourning.
"They did not die in peace."
Nancy quickly stood, gun drawn.
Analyzing the room, she found there was no one there.
"What do you want!?" she yelled, voice hoarse.
"For you to see the truth."
Looking back down at Mike, Nancy caught a wave of deja vu.
She'd seen this before. In the visions.
"Don't you see? You couldn't save them. You were supposed to protect them, but you failed. You're a failure."
Failure.
The word echoed around the room.
"Get out of my head!" Nancy shouted, then heard footsteps running in a corner.
One bullet there.
More noises from the other corner.
She pulled the trigger twice on the corner.
Nancy kept shooting, hoping to hit something, anything.
But it was just her shooting at nothing, and her dead brother's body.
"You should've listened, Nancy."
And then nothing.
The vines were swept away, the noises stopped, and the voice was gone.
Silence
Yet, Nancy stood, waiting for an attack.
Once she decided there was no longer a threat, she dropped back down next to Mike.
And waited.
Waited to wake up, waited for Mike to wake up, waited for the music to start playing.
Because it wasn't real.
No it wasn't.
It was just another vision, she convinced herself.
But yet she stayed in the same place, Mike didn't wake up, and there was no sounds of music.
It was just Nancy.
Living in the cold hard truth.
Called reality.
