Raphael slowly got up and decided to leave the house. He didn't want to be under the same roof with them any longer. So he went to the inn nearby and decided to stay there for the time being. That the bell ringer had to come back that evening... he wanted Regina... but it was difficult for him to defeat the bell ringer. He had almost strangled him... if he was going to take out the Hunchback, he'd have to do it some other way. So he began to devise a plan... for Raphael knew he would not rest until he possessed Regina.
Quasimodo was making preparations when he reached Notre Dame. He wanted to arouse suspicion that he had brought Regina back into the Tower by always keeping the door to his room locked and sometimes pretending to talk to her. This worked quite well for a few days, until Quasimodo found out that Brother Martin had been released from the monastery. But only to be transferred to a mental institution. Quasimodo was glad that Regina was so far out of his grasp. But instead of writing her a letter, he wanted to speak to her personally. He just had to see her again because he missed her every minute. Quasimodo secretly packed some provisions and in the night he crept to the secret door. He alone had the key to this door. He snuck out of the cathedral and made his way to Reims. He slept in the open, on bare stone, knowing no inn would take him. He hurried and tried to avoid others. Entering the forest where he was so badly wounded, he was surprised to find several lifeless bodies in one spot next to a broken cart. One of the bodies was even decapitated. Quasimodo began to worry. Had Regina and Raphael been attacked? Quasimodo hurried on to Reims, hoping the two were well.
On the 3rd day he reached Reims late in the evening. He knocked at his parents' house. His mother opened it to him and rubbed her eyes still sleepily. But when she realized who was standing in front of her, she smiled and hugged her son. Quasimodo was still a bit uncomfortable... when Hannah let go of him, Quasimodo asked for his wife and Hannah pointed to the guest room. Quasimodo went to the door and opened it. He had feared what he saw there... Raphael was lying over Regina on the bed with his pants down. He saw Regina's legs kicking, she seemed to be resisting. Quasimodo clenched his fists in anger, rushed towards the bed and grabbed Raphael. He grabbed his neck with both hands, yanked him off the bed, and began smothering him. The wrath of the bell ringer knew no bounds. He had dared to touch Regina...
Suddenly he felt a hand on his arm. Regina sat on the bed and clasped his arm. She shook her head. "Why? He wanted you..." Quasimodo growled.
"Nevertheless... he risked his life for me." Said Regina.
Quasimodo sighed. Regina was just too good-natured for this world... he let go of Raphael, who fell to the ground panting.
Quasimodo kissed Regina on the forehead and then he turned to Raphael, grabbed him by the collar and dragged him out of the room. He slammed the door in the mercenary's face. Then Quasimodo turned to Regina, who had got back into bed and covered herself. She nodded to the ringer and patted the empty seat next to her. Quasimodo lay down next to her on the covers, because after this experience he didn't want to continue where Raphael left off.
Relieved, Regina nestled against one breast and soon fell asleep while Quasimodo stroked her hair soothingly.
Early the next morning, Raphael returned to the McGrobains' home. He hid in the alcove of the house opposite and decided to watch the house. Shortly after arriving, John left the house. Raphael followed him and his path led him to Reims Cathedral. Raphael had seen that John had some tools with him and put two and two together. Here John earned his daily bread. The cathedral looked damaged, obviously a fire had destroyed it. Raphael took a closer look around here to get an idea of how to carry out his plan to get rid of the Hunchback. The treatment Raphael had received from him yesterday was so humiliating... Something here must be able to help him get his revenge. Then his eyes fell on a heavy wooden beam hanging from ropes on a gallery above the chancel... Raphael's plan began to take shape...
