Chapter 11 – After the Fire

Ruby Rose, Dorm Room

Ruby mopped in her gaming chair, not gaming.

To her, it felt just wrong for a gaming chair to not be used for gaming. It was in its name for crying out loud.

But, she just couldn't find the motivation.

She had had moments like this before. Those moments where you lost so badly that nothing seems to want to cheer you up.

But more than even that, she missed Wotan.

It wasn't like she didn't take breaks between gaming. She ate, took a walk, went to the little girl's room, and looked up how to do advanced circuit board, basic stuff.

Yet, she felt this time, away from her fluffy wolf/raven was…depressing.

She'd literally spent the last three hours just hugging the little dog plushie Yang got her so she wouldn't miss cuddling with Zwei. It even looked like him.

'Arf', 'Arf'. It also made sounds when she squeezed it.

That made her smile a little. But just a little.

Sundays were never 'fun-days' – oh by the brother gods in my depression I've turned into Dad and Yang- for her. She liked learning, don't get her wrong, but weekends were never long enough.

She idly wonder what Java and her clan were up to, or The Clock Tower. Truth be told, she hadn't thought about them during the entire riot, or whatever that was.

And then she remembered something Mr. Fox had told her.

She kicked off from her spot in the middle of her dorm room, rolling to a practiced halt at her computer desk.

"D-I-N-wiki-dot-com." She typed recalling what he told her. Apparently, some Masters actually liked roleplaying as reporters and journalists. There was even a Journalist job, surprisingly.

The Dendrogram Information Network (DIN) was what the group was called. They not only supplied news inside the game but ran a wiki with all kinds of information relating to ID in the real world.

After a few minutes of scrolling, and admittedly getting distracted by an article about panda monsters in Huang He- they were so cute, especially the one recorded sneezing (She may or may not have played that adorable scene over a dozen times- she came across what happened in Dryfe.

"The clan Fire Bugs, as well as several mercenary tians, assaulted the Dryfian Capital of Vandelheim in an attempted Coup." She read the first line. That was the clan Java had told her about.

As she read, she learned how they had tried to take over the country by eliminating the royal family, but were thwarted by the combined efforts of Dryfe's Three Greats, several Pre-Superiors, and the Dryfian military.

"It was the bravery of a tian soldier, Duncan Royal…" she tasted the name before the image of a young man with a faint scar on his neck came to mind, "who, after being mortally wounded, inscribed on a piece of debris linking the Fire Bugs to the series of arsons plaguing Vandelheim. He also implicated their clan's leader, Tick, in the murder of several tian soldiers, including Captain Roland Stone, the King of Armor."

As she finished reading the article, she felt a knot form in her stomach.

She hadn't known them long, but they both seemed like such good people.

Surprisingly, or rather unsurprisingly, she felt tears stream down her eyes.

Her Dad had always told her that it was okay to cry when a good person dies. And now two, probably more had.

She didn't sob, but the tears did flow. Captain Stone reminded her so much of Dad, and he was a dad. She remembered he had daughters.

Daughters who would never see their father again.

And Duncan. Sure, Wotan teased about him, but he was a good guy. He couldn't have been that much older than she was.

Yet he was gone too.

She could really use a cuddle from Wotan right about now.

She didn't want to finish the article. She knew the Masters could survive death, but not tians. They were gone for good.

Thinking about it just made her sad.

But something in her made her do it.

The DIN Journalist had been very thorough in uncovering what had happened. Someone had infiltrated the offices used to communicate with other countries, killing several tians before assuming their appearances, effectively cutting off communication from outside the capital.

"This resulted in Empress Cryoconite not being put on the Wanted List in Dryfe and allowing her to respawn after her terrorist attack on Caldina's capital of Drag-Nomad."

Ruby blinked.

After finishing the article, which ended with the Imperator putting the entire clan on the Wanted List she went back to the part about Endless Miasma.

There was a link to the relevant article. When she hovered her cursor over the link she saw the article's title as "Endless Miasma The Greatest Tian Killer".

She clicked it.

The article went on to explain she had been secretly planning to destroy the capital of Caldina as a conspiracy with a tian named Douglas Coin, the mayor of the city of Cortana, the starting place of all Caldina Masters.

He wanted to not only make his city the new capital but also kill off parliament and reestablish it with his cronies with him taking the chairman's spot.

Empress was nearly successful, having incapacitated most of Caldina's top clan, Qliphoth, in a surprise attack during a meeting with the Chairwoman La Place Phantasma.

The Chairwoman was not harmed, but her secretary, Abby Gale (1), died due to being poisoned.

In the attack, Empress proceeded to release her signature miasma killing an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 tians. If not for Godhand, Peachy Lady, being on the scene the death toll would have likely been doubled.

Ruby had to read that last part a second time.

She couldn't understand why or even how someone could do something like that.

For money?

Power?

No matter how she thought about it, it just didn't make sense. She knew there were bad people in the world, she wanted to eventually be someone like a hero of stories when she was a little girl just to fight such people…but this?

She wouldn't say she was angry, but something very similar to it.

Her goals in Infinite Dendrogram were thus far to enter the Duel Rankings, win in the Duel Rankings, make a super cool Magingear that can survive Wotan's skill, and now send Empress Cryoconite.

Which seemed like she would have competition as she continued the article.

Both tian and Masters alike had posted bounties on her head. Every country with a save point has her on the Wanted List.

Even the smaller bounties were enough to buy three fully decked out and custom-ordered Magingears with fully packaged option works AND a full set of replacement parts.

The comments already had several people claiming they would be the richest Master in all of Dendro if they managed to PK Empress.

But the very fact her bounties were so high meant she was equally that dangerous.

She clicked a few linked articles and found out she was right.

Empress Cryoconite was considered the most versatile widescale annihilation type. There were several theories about her Embryo, but nothing concrete.

Some said she could control the poison she created making it move forwards and backwards from her like some kind of Territory Embryo.

Others claimed it made her poison more powerful and resistant to the effects of even All-Purpose Healing Elixirs failed far faster than they should and the poison seemed to dramatically increase in the damage it did almost instantly.

There were even a few stories about how some think she can create an instant death poison that can't be resisted. There was a video of a guy with an Embryo who granted him complete poison immunity but died the moment her mist touched him.

"PKing her is gonna be tough." Ruby sighed, "But what if she just spawns in a different country?" a little frightened by the fact a walking biohazard would be respawning possibly six more times, she decided to look at the wiki some more.

She didn't know this, but if a Master were to do something illegal in a country, that country would put them on a Wanted List and then send out notices to other countries if the crime was significant enough. Then those countries would decide for themselves if they wanted to do the same.

While some countries were allies, it didn't mean their laws were the same or they agreed on sentencing. As a result, it wasn't an uncommon practice for Masters who commit crimes to visit one or two countries to access the save point and then commit crimes in another country nearby.

The Kingdom of Altar had it the worst due to having three neighboring countries and Granavalao on the seas.

However, the wiki also included a copy of the Wanted List. Every country with a save point had Empress on their Wanted List.

She let out a relieved sigh.

So, someone just needed to kill her once.

She had heard about Gaol but didn't know much about it.

Naturally, more wiki surfing.

There was a surprising amount of information about Gaol. It has job crystals from the mainland countries (Dryfe, Altar, Legendaria, Caldina, and Huang He), dungeons, and monsters. Though it used gaol lir instead of lir.

It seemed like it worked like regular prisons. You were charged for your crimes and then served a sentence. When the sentence was over, nationality, and more importantly, the ability to use save points, were restored to that country.

A quick wiki search again revealed that Empress' sentencing, when she was eventually PK'd, would be over 100 years. Which meant 33 years and change in real-world time.

Games, even as amazing as ID, typically didn't last that long. Sure Remnant of Warcraft (2) had been going on forever, but there weren't that many able to have that kind of success. It meant that the moment she was PK'd, then she wouldn't be able to do this ever again.

Reassured that her now nemesis could be effectively banned from play for the probable life of the game she did what all gamers did on wikis, she scrolled through the articles on the front page.

'Guardian-Jaguarman Job Build for Dummies'

'Sacred Blazer Immolates Competition for Concert Ticket'

'Huang He's Garden Princess Drinks UBM Under the Table, Literally'

'Mythical Bear UBM Leaves Kurobane Family Headless'

'Achromatized Sun the Myth, the Legend, or Real?'

'Bare Hand Job Build Pros and Cons'

'King of Toys: VR Santa? An Exclusive Look into the clan, Elf on the Bench'

'Insect General Squashed by LMS'

'Weapon Maintenance for Noobs'

'UFO Invasion Over Granvalao's Southern Fleet, Fact or Fiction?'

'Third Player Coup Quashed in Legendaria'

That last one had her interested, so she clicked it.

"At the same time as the attack on Dryfe's capital, Vandelheim, a second attempt to take over a country by Masters had occurred. This time in Legendaria. Due to its fantasy-like setting and multiple races inhabiting it, Legendaria succeeded in attracting more than any single other of the seven starting countries."

"However, its second, third, fifth, and sixth-ranked clans; Purple Webs, Crashing Wave, Hana Cabana, and Black Lamb (3) attempted to take over multiple territories in the federal constitutional monarchy. Both attempting to both remove the Head of State and Prime Minister as well as establish several smaller city-states in an attempt to gain greater control of the Senate."

"Amassing a force of over three…t-t-THOUSAND!" Ruby took a moment to process that. she knew ID had thousands of players in each country, but just four clans had OVER three thousand people between them."

How did they even fail? Even if they weren't all Superiors or even Pre-Superiors, there had to be a lot of high-ranking players just to get in the top five. Odds were their leaders were Superiors so that meant at least three Superiors, right?

She read further and it gave the clan's breakdowns. As it turned out, only two of the four clans had Superiors. Purple Webs clan leader Lil' Miss Spider had a Superior Embryo, but not a Superior Job…until she killed the previous Insect General Eh Teln Pare while Hana Cabana's leader, Red Bane, possessed the King of Hunting job.

However, the force of over three thousand Master, and two Superior, were stopped by just five Superiors!

Ruby couldn't believe it. Yeah, Superiors like Bun-Bun were infuriatingly OP- please nerf- but five players took on over THREE THOUSAND!

"As a result of their overwhelming power, both tian and Masters alike have begun calling them the Demon Lords and have given them each a fitting title."

The Gluttonous Demon Lord, who was able to power level faster than anyone and is confirmed to be the first Master to reach level 1,000. In terms of raw stats, he is one of the most powerful players in Dendrogram.

The Licentious Demon Lord, who dresses as a madame of the night and is always trailed by a harem of muscular and scantily clad bodybuilders. She was able to place [Charm] on nearly a fourth of the allied guilds' forces making them slaughter each other to the last man.

The Lurid Sky Demon Lord, who commands an endless army of Cloud Elementals. The kindest and most motherly of the Demon Lords, but also the most vicious as seen when she had her Cloud Elementals literally rip LMS's insectoid monsters comparable to Legendary UBMs limb from limb.

The Blazing Demon Lord, a swordswoman who bathes her enemies in a sea of flames. Holder of second place in Legendaria's Kill Rankings behind the country's Head of State herself, Titania, and the one responsible for defeating nearly half of the allied guild forces by herself.

The Distorted Demon Lord, the man responsible for PK'ing Red Bane himself as well as several Pre-Superiors and high-level Masters. The exact nature of his Embryo is unknown, but many suspect it to be a World or possibly Another Rule Type as enemy skills seem to "malfunction" and their cost values fluctuate.

Out of the over 3,000 attacking forces, less than one hundred eighty were able to escape (4). This includes Little Miss Spider, whose whereabouts are currently unknown.

Ruby blinked.

It felt like every time she was beginning to grasp how strong Superiors truly were, she kept learning something new.

She wondered what Wotan would be able to do when she became a Superior Embryo.

That thought just made her miss Wotan more.

Looking at her clock it was already 11:01 pm.

She hadn't realized she had been surfing the wiki for so long.

"Well, I'm already going to be tired for her early morning classes." She began convincing herself, "And time does move faster in the game, so it wouldn't be too bad to leave for a few minutes there."

"Just a few minutes." She reassured herself.

"Just a few."

Vandelheim, Dryfe Imperium

Logging in, Crescent Rose looked around the wreckage that had once been the main meeting spot for everyone in the capital.

Despite three days having passed in Dendro time, there were still charred and burnt buildings being demolished, melted remains of various objects, one of which she was certain was her Magingear which now looked like a giant lump of melted metal and several scorched marks on the ground…some of them people shaped.

Before she could dwell too deeply on that last part, a very familiar girl with blonde hair mostly restrained in a wolf/raven costume with an eye patch covering one of her blue eyes appeared before her.

"Welcome bac-" Before Wotan could even finish, Crescent was hugging her as tightly as her avatar would allow.

Wotan, for her part, felt her Master's concern and simply embraced her back. Not tightly, but as gently as she could. Letting her Master's tears flow and gently rubbing her back and giving her soothing reassurance.

"I'm so *hic* happy you're *hic* okay." Crescent sobbed into Wotan's ever-comfy suit. She had read the articles and the wiki, but there was always a small pang of fear that her Embryo would be lost or not the same.

"There, there Master. The only way I will change is when I evolve and that is just what I can do." Wotan reassured patting her on the back, "You're stuck with my personality." She said raising Crescent's eyes and meeting her with a bright smile.

"Thanks, Wotan." The red, with blonde tipped, Master replied.

"Any time Master." She beamed again before a look of remembrance crossed her face. "Oh, by the way, I need you to equip me."

Crescent, still in Wotan's fuzzy arms, blinked in confusion. "Why? The MG-250 is scrap and I don't have any weapons."

"That doesn't matter." Wotan said pulling back, "Just like with my second form, I need you to equip me so that I can get my third form."

"YOU GOT YOUR THIRD FORM!" Crescent shouted before jittering like a five-year-old on a sugar rush.

"Why didn't you say so? Transform." She said the relieved worry that once plastered her face vanishing in an instant.

"Calm down Master," Wotan said grabbing both of Crescent's shoulders, locking her in place for a moment. not without some effort she noted.

In a swish of light, the fuzzy wolf/raven girl was transformed into a familiar red energy cape that wrapped around Crescent like the comfortable embrace she had come to associate with Wotan.

"So what can this form do?"

"Only one skill this time but it is a good one. It's called Runic Scrawling. In exchange for MP and SP, as well as giving it time to charge, you can increase the performance, durability, or attack power of a weapon. Though with the latter the higher the damage potential the more damage it will deal when combined with Runic Script."

"Additionally, the amount of MP and SP provided as well as the charge time affect how long and how powerful the other buffs are."

Not that Crescent heard the last part, "That. is. AWESOME!" Crescent shouted so loud everyone in the plaza was looking at her like she had gone mad.

Not that she cared.

"You also don't have enough MP or SP to use it more than once or twice a battle at your current level."

(Crescent had already stopped listening)

This was the most amazing skill she had ever heard of and this was only Wotan's third form. She wanted to evolve her Embryo more than ever now just to see what she might be able to do.

'Master while I also want to evolve and see what I can do, I would like to remind you that you have an early class tomorrow and need sleep.'

It still surprised her sometimes when Wotan read her mind.

She knew she could hide things, but she never really tried. Though one example of something she might want to hide did come to mind, it was less about keeping it from Wotan and simply just not wanting to think about it too much.

"I could stand to play for a little-oof" In the time it took her to get that far in her sentence Wotan had transformed back to her Maiden form and planted a fuzzy glove into Crescent's solar plexus.

Unknown Location

A beautiful woman with long flowing blonde hair wearing a dress that looked live overlade spider webs with varying shades of purple sat in front of what most would call a crystal ball, but actually, it was a magic item.

In Infinite Dendrogram, there isn't a player chat function. Something that angered a lot of early players.

Except for certain types of Embryos, the only options for long-distance communication were expensive communication items that could be used for audio, visual, or both.

In this case, it was the latter most.

It displayed six figures, though the last time they did this, it displayed ten. They were the blonde-haired woman, a wolf faunus with a golden mask, a young woman with flowing white hair and piercing blue eyes, a man with a scarf comically large on him covering much of the top half of his head, a person with no one was sure was male or female with neon pink hair like silk, and a person wearing a helmet that made them look like a reject from a galaxy far far away (5).

"Where's the beauty queen?" the man with the scarf asked.

The wolf faunus responded, "She had some IRL stuff to take care of. She won't be needed for the next part of our plan anyway."

"Next part!?" the blonde woman yelled. "Sweetheart, because of your plan, my clan was decimated, and I'm wanted in almost every country!"

The wolf faunus met her gaze, his voice coming out calm and collected, "You were aware of this fact, that is why we had your strongest members leave your clan a month ago and secured your escape route. We needed to both gauge the defenses of Dryfe, Legendaria, and Caldina. Using Empress and the Fire Bugs drew out more information about the countries; their defenses, previously unknown Superiors and Pre-Superiors."

"I hadn't even heard of Peachy Lady until now." The person with long pink hair added. "Nor did we hear about the Dryfe royal family having a secret Superior bodyguard."

"How pray tell, did you know she was a Superior?" the scarfed man asked. "All I got was a video of your pet lizard getting ripped apart."

"That would be my doing." Said the woman with white hair as several small fly-like creatures flew in patterns around her that were too coordinated to be natural.

"You trained bugs?"

"Something like that," she replied with a coy smirk.

"It took me forever to record the information, but I managed to get just about everything we needed and thankfully the Reveal skills work through Embryo-related transmissions.

"Her name is Bahia and she is the Burglary Princess."

"I killed the tian who previously held that job," said the masked fanus, "The skill Greater Takeover allows the user to steal body parts so long as they can fit in their hands."

"Fuzzy, I think you might be misremembering that, because one, her hands were empty, and two, according to the video we all were sent, she didn't have snowplows for hands."

If the wolf faunus was insulted or shaken by the comment, he didn't let it show, "It was just out of sight of the camera, but when she activated her skill, she had a snake on her arm. I am willing to guess that it is her Embryo, a Guardian and that it acts similarly to your own skill by expanding her holding capacity."

"Remember in Infinite Dendrogram, so long as you don't equip an item, you can carry it."

"So, she combined a storage Embryo with a skill that lets her grab a lot more than she normally could."

"Basically. However, these skills require focus, have range limitations, and can only work in one direction. Surprise attacks from multiple directions would render the skill useless."

"Sugar, can we get back to the fact I'm on a floating tin can." The woman groaned, clearly not enjoying the rocking.

"It will be a few weeks until you reach Tenchi. Just use this time to recuperate your losses."

"I work with insect-type monsters, we are in the middle of the ocean." She countered.

The wolf faunus seemed calm despite his posture showing he was somewhat annoyed, "You agreed to this plan, however, I do sympathize with your plight."

"Lavandula, can you pick her up and then Sagisō on the way to Tenchi?"

The person in the helmet, by the sound of her voice a woman, shook her head, "Can't do it. Granvalao has some pretty tight security regarding aerial assaults and that's on top of G.B. and his UFO Fleet Embryo. If it was either or, I might be able to do something, but not both."

"Well, there you have it."

The woman deflated but realized that her only option was to wait.

"With that settled, how are things in Huang He?" the gold-masked man directed at the man in the scarf and the one with pink hair.

"About that…"

"His little hellion went nuts and wiped out Mirage's entire assassination and security division to get to their leader and his Superior Job."

The gold-masked man facepalmed…as did everyone other than those two.

After a few deep breaths, the wolf faunus turned to the man in the scarf. "So, let me get this straight, after nearly a year of keeping her from killing the wrong people, she suddenly decides to massacre an entire branch of the largest criminal organization in Huang He despite only having a fifth-form Embryo."

"When you can cause the air itself to melt a man alive, there aren't many ways to defend against it."

"Fair. Fair."

"I do have to ask, what you were doing when she decided to reenact Towerman?"

"I was in the bathroom."

"IRL or ID?"

"ID," he replied calmly, "turns out panda monster curry was a bad idea. I was in there for nearly six hours."

"I see. And do they know she is connected to you?"

The man in the scarf looked rather uneasy, "Yeah."

Another round of facepalming.

"Do I need to remind you that neither of you are Superiors? If you attract the attention of Huang He's two Superiors or worse yet, the Draconic Emperor, all our efforts in Huang He will be for not."

"Look, it was an honest mistake."

"Have you ever thought of going to Caldina?"

Blinking, the scarfed man got his meaning, "We can be packed and on the road tomorrow morning."

"I've heard Caldina women are more fun anyway."

"Oh, they certainly are." Chimed the white-haired woman.

That had a few eyebrows raised, "What, who doesn't love beautiful women wearing barely anything to help keep cool their hot sweaty, perfectly tanned bodies."

"As informative as that statement was…are you going to have any trouble taking him and his…niece(?) in?"

"Not a problem. If anything I think people wouldn't find it odd for him to switch to Cadlina given how many orders he gets from Dryfe, Altar, and Legendaria."

"Then we are in agreement", the masked wolf faunus said. Turning to the scarfed man, "When you and your protégé become Superiors, tell me, I'll have further orders for you. Until then, continue building our info network."

"…and try to make sure she doesn't kill the wrong people."

Then to the Lil' Miss Spider and Sagisō, "When you two are in Tenchi, I want you to meet our contact and begin operation Bleeding Fang."

He turned towards Lavandula, "When they begin the operation, fly over and give them as much support as is needed."

Lastly, the white-haired woman, "Meet those two at the border of Huang He, but avoid the Dragon River Valley. The Beast General has been hanging around there lately."

"Just about the only thing that pig was good for was telling us that." The blonde-haired woman said.

"Regardless, I want you to double your recruitment efforts. Superiors are our main goal, but any Masters with Embryos that have a high growth potential or have abilities that suit our needs are also acceptable."

"After all, you, LMS, and I are the only Superiors in our group so far."

(1) I couldn't find a canon secretary so I just followed RWBY's naming convention. For those confused, there is a job in ID called Onmitsu, that has a skill, Art of Transformation, that allows a person to not only transform into another person and the skill Onmitsu Conceal that conceals their Onmitsu-related jobs. That is why so many think Marie Adler is only level 31 despite her years of playing. In short, La Place used a body double armed with poison-countering items to trick Empress (Weiss) into attacking and thus appear to be the bad guy. La Place wasn't even in Drag-Nomad at the time, but somewhere else drafting Douglas Coin (An amoral political rival)'s execution warrant next to a stack of falsified documents she got from a certain Master. The quest that was clearly a trap was just a red herring.

(2) World of Warcraft reference because it has been around since 2004. ~19 years as of writing this chapter.

(3) Based on Mistralian gangs, in order: Spider, Wave, Hana Guild, and Black Sheep.

(4) in ID the second a Superior who is a wide-scale annihilation type steps onto the field armies (like Shu with Franklin's) proves to mean little. When THREE such Superiors step foot on the battlefield, it is just a plain and simple slaughter.

(5) discount Darth Vader helmet.

Well, damn if that doesn't sound like a bunch of shady stuff is in the works.

I wonder if anyone can guess who all of the Demon Lords are. (Hint: one of them is dead in canon, but in this fic, they are very much alive.) (Second Hint: We've already featured two of them in this fic so far.)

Empress Cryoconite = Weiss Schnee. From top clan to globally wanted terrorist. How will Weiss get herself out of this one?

Bun-Bun = Velvet Scarlatina. Roleplays as a maid with a liquid metal Embryo that can obliterate entire mountains. Probably shouldn't dine n' dash with her working there.

Lil' Miss Spider = Lil' Miss Malachite. The mother of the Malachite twins and leader of the criminal organization Spider is in ID and she is spinning a web of intrigue. I originally envisioned her as either the Curse Princess or something like that, but her first interaction with Cinder made me just want to give her an insect (spider) related job.

Red Bane = Vermillion Raddock. From the RWBY: The Grimm Campaign, a web series featuring a RWBY-themed DnD game. Not as great as Critical Role, but not bad. I gave him the name Red Bane due to his color motif and that he was supposed to be based on Bane from the Batman comics. Truth be told, I'm not sure if I'm going to be using any more characters from RWBY: The Grimm Campaign since I don't know it very well, but we'll see. Things can always change.

Bahia = Emerald Sustrai. In a lot of ways, Emerald is similar to Behemoth. Both started lonely and wanted a friend, someone to look out for them. Be it Cinder or Claudiah, the two became dependent on those that "saved" them. The difference is Claudiah actually treats them like friends while Cinder just uses people.

Lavandula = Lisa Lavender. I took inspiration for her appearance from RWBY: The Grimm Campaign's Mina Lavender who always wears a helmet and may or may not be related to Lisa Lavender.

Sagisō = Shion Zaiden. Our favorite sleepy Nightmare Hunter is in ID, but what are his motives and why did I give him pink hair? If you're wondering about the name, it is the Romanization of a Japanese flow that means: "I'll be thinking of you even in my dreams". It seemed fitting with Shion being a Nightmare Hunter and all.
