Preface: Ada Wong, Ellie and Joel are being escorted from a dangerous location by the Special Forces Boonies platoon members. Ada has shown them documentation of her 2026 transfer from FEDRA to ARSOF under the alias Yume Choi.

The quadricycle bounced over potholes on the main road of Broomfield as the wind roared past on the blistering cold afternoon. The wide and tall concrete wall came into view. Barbed wire decorated the top. Ada was shivering and pressing herself against a very giddy Ellie.

SSG Kennedy declared proudly, "We'll be promoting Sergeant Redfield today to become a part of the Alpha platoon-"

"Woot! Finally a Staff Sergeant!" Claire cheered from the backseat. Ellie turned back and saw her doing a little celebratory V at them.

"Redfield a los dos." SFC Oliviera said in the front, "Guys stop pedaling. We're at our first stop for the LT." They were at a building that extended out from the wall.

Troy walked up to the front driver's side of the quadricycle, holding Ada's coat out. His other arm, torso and up were blocked by the canopy covering the top of the bike, but she saw the blood dripping down onto the pavement, and it worried her.

"Whose coat is that?" Claire asked, "Yours, Ellie?"

Ellie was pleasantly surprised that Troy had gone back to the house while they were pedaling just to nab it.

"Oh that's my clients-err uh -coat!" Ellie said enthusiastically-she looked unsurely at Ada's face beside hers, and felt more than saw Ada's hand sign subtly into her thigh 'client'. To SSG Kennedy, it appeared as nervousness combined with being cold-especially when she signed the 'e' with the folded fingertips into Ellies leg.

Claire said gently, "She was your client but she's our Specialist now." Ellie felt a pang of disconsolation so deeply that she grimaced. She'd only known this person for a day or two but again, it felt to her as if she was cursed to constantly lose companions.

SFC Oliveira tried to grasp the coat, but Troy shook it tantalizingly, then let it drop onto the road.

"Little girl come get that." Oliveira said pointing to it.

"Aww no way, come on-I'm 21!" Ellie retorted, lying.

"You are so not 21, what are you fucking 10 and Specialist Choi is uhh…12?"

Ada just looked at the coat in front of the bike.

SSG Kennedy announced-already moving-trying to catch a softening eye from Ada, "I will grab the coat for the lady."

SFC Oliviera corrected SSG Kennedy, "Whoa wait-"

It happened quite fast for everyone, as Troy reached with both hands over to the bending man and pulled his arm out of its socket. Troy was in the next blink, against the wall, standing dead still facing the door.

"These fucking LTs!" Claire spat out. But she was more cautious, having caught on to SFC Oliveira's words. SSG Kennedy had his arm in his mouth, biting down so that he wasn't shouting from the surprising pain.

"Why'd he do that?" Ellie asked plaintively to SFC Oliviera. SFC Oliviera was holding up his radio to his face, "Black angel at the gates, over."

He just shook his head, gritting his teeth hard. SSG Kennedy got back in beside Claire in the back seat.

They all heard a click as the door unlocked.

"Kid he wants you and the Specialist and this guy to go in with him. If I tell you to do something kid, just fucking do it." He was straining to not yell at her.

"This is why I won't work with LTs-cuz of shit like this they pull. You're not gonna get away with this, you hear me LT?!" Troy was ignoring him and opening up the 4 foot wide door.

"Oh." She breathed out as Claire was silently shushing SSG Kennedy while he bit even harder onto his good arm.

SFC Oliviera jostled Joel, "Hey sir, hey-listen to me this is extremely important."

"Mmm." Joel replied.

"You guys listening?" SFC Oliviera used a knife hand to point at Ada and Ellie as they both nodded.

"Make sure he always has his back toward you, and don't try to get his attention. Got it kid? Kids? Don't fucking talk to him. The LT's have to sedate themselves in order to access our bases so he's going to be injecting himself with whatever Umbrella concoction-and that's on the other side of the room got it? And then the door is going to open for him to go into the airfield. Nod if you understand me."

Joel, Ellie and Ada nodded.

"Now you guys-you're gonna be tested too, but just look into the cameras on the corner of the walls-its like 2 minutes of hypnotism bullshit or whateverthefuck. Vehicles have an entrance just up ahead so we'll be right behind you." He moved his head, indicating it was time for them to offboard the bike.

SGT Claire patted them both on their shoulders, "You'll be just fine, just try to keep very still, especially if he turns towards you."

Ada picked up her coat, and quite a few buds fell out of the pockets.

"Leave it Specialist." SFC Oliviera commanded behind her. Shit. "Leave all your shit with us, backpacks and sleeping bags-we'll handle it. Specialist, we'll talk later."

Troy pushed on the buzzer and stared down at it. There was the sound of a large click, and then Troy opened up the metal trapdoor and crouched inside.

Joel walked in front, holding Ellie's hand as she timidly went behind him. Ellie grasped Ada's hand, squeezing it as they all walked into the room behind the black behemoth.

There were vents in the ceiling, blowing frigid air down forcefully. A projector on the ceiling was displaying hypnotic black and white patterns on the entirety of every wall. There were fish eyed cameras in each corner and two metal detectors in the middle. On the other side of the metal detectors was another thick metal door and two yellow machine dogs.

"Welcome to QZ F2C. Please face any of the four cameras in the room and stay still for a facial scan."

Once they were all in, the trapdoor locked behind them. The group stuck towards the door, aligning themselves to the camera on their left, keeping the heaving mass in their peripherals.

There was a picture of a man's face in each corner of the room, although the moving lights made it a bit difficult to see what his face looked like. He wore a red sash over a black military uniform. It said "One Country, Two Systems."

Ada started hyperventilating in the small room, clutching her throat. Joel signed to Ada worriedly, 'Are you scared of him yet?' She shook her head no. Ellie signed to Ada, 'cake'. Ada took Ellie's hand in her own shaking hands, and pretended to eat it. Joel then placed his finger to his lips, pointing at the closest corner where the camera was. A laser scanned their faces.

Ellie watched the machine dogs walk to the center of the room, the lights crisscrossing over them. There was a grenade attached to the top of one, and there was a platter attached to the other. Ellie peered around bar of the metal detector to see it. Two big needles disappeared from the platter and then clattered back on a half second later. They all waited, Ellie and Ada staring at each other while Joel watched the thick corded muscles of the bioweapon start to twitch and then relax.

The door to the base opened. Troy went out, and turned towards them a few feet from the entrance. Squatting down and staring at them with his crazed red eyes, he beckoned for them to come closer. Joel led them out, his head tilted down slightly. Ada braced herself against the cold. Her long-sleeved red dress was not good for this wintery weather.

There were two clearing barrels for checking chambered rounds. Ada showed Ellie how to check her pistol and fire it into the clearing barrel. Joel was waiting for them patiently, blocking the space between them and Troy. He had one hand on his pistol, stroking it.

A stout man walked to the side of them in a pressed military uniform. It wasn't fatigues, it was the Class A's- reserved for special occasions, with all of his ribbons hanging from his chest on the left side.

"Which of you is the…E4?" When he spoke, it was quite slowly-as if the words were being pulled out of a hat and then unfurled to be read out. His shaved black beret bore the shining silver insignia of a Captain. His nameplate on the right side read 'Chains'.

Ada raised her hand slowly.

"When you see an officer, you salute, in; and out, of uniform." He said sternly.

"Sir." She stood at the position of attention and held her hand in a frozen salute, waiting. The officer was not a formidable man at all in the slowness of his speech, and also not in very good shape. His face was rather drooping and he had practically no chin.

"Lieutenant… this is uuuuuuuh…great work." He shook his head affirmingly and slowly moved it towards where it should've already been, looking at the LT.

Troy was stuck in a low motionless squat, as his vertically slanted pupils flitted to meet the Captain's, and then back to Ada.

Her salute started to tremble and fall, because of her injuries-she had only just fallen from the second story of a house a few hours prior.

"I haven't." The captain started frowning, "Saluted you back yet!"

She brought it back up into a crisp line with the edge of her brow. He finally saluted her, and her hands fell to her side.

"Specialist what uh…..what was your duty title?"

"I was the maintenance, ehem, specialist sir." Ada managed to get out softly.

"I can't hear what did you say? You need to speak up specialist."

Ellie cut in, "She says she was a maintenance specialist sir."

"Thank you for speaking louder uhhh so you were a maintenance specialist."

They all stood waiting anxiously-except for Troy-as he thought for a few minutes.

"So what did you do?" He asked, confused.

"I repaired the trucks sir." Ada's nose started to curl and twitch in disgust. She said softly as the captain spoke, "He's a dead-end, Troy." The Captain was too busy talking to notice her moving lips. but Ellie looked at her in surprise, and even Joel let out a small snicker.

"ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Yea. Oh! We definitely. Definitely. Need you! What's your name?"

"Specialist Choi sir."

"Okaaaaaaaay! Yea. We definitely. Neeeed you to help the LT with the uhhhh…inventories."

The Captain pursed his lips, nodding deeply at her. She waited, inwardly dying of the pain of waiting for each word to come out of his mouth.

Joel cut in, "Sir we need medical attention right now, can we talk about this later?"

"Who are you?" The Captain looked quizzically at Joel.

"We. Need. Medical. Help. Now." Joel grabbed Ellie's shirt and pulled it up as she initially resisted. The gashes on her side were still extremely red and filled with pus.

"Oh." The Captain then ushered them to follow as he walked briskly. "We have a uhhhh, a uhhh-I speak 6 languages so. Ceremony. We have that now and then you guys can get some ibuprofen."

The airfield strip was just ahead of them, and beyond that were the airport buildings. To their immediate right side were the sleeping quarters for the enlisted. These were stacked rows of freightcars with metal stairs on the front of each. Then there was a big brick two story building for the officer on the other side of the airstrip. Then there was the pavilion at the airport terminals, where the company held their formations. There were 3 vehicles neatly parked along the left wall of the airfield, and another 3 vehicles neatly facing those vehicles. This was their motorpool-their name for the designated area of all the trucks.

The quadricycle was already parked beside the trucks. Claire Redfield was carrying Ellie's backpack and Joel's backpack over to the pavilion.

"She's, our medic." Captain Chains pointed at her. "I think she's."

Joel and Ellie looked at him expectantly and then Ellie nodded. "Cool."

There were military personnel rushing out of the freightcars behind them, running to get to the pavilion. Two were already there standing and looking at the newcomers. A flag waved hard in the cold wind.

SFC Oliviera rushed to the pavilion with Ada's coat over his shoulder. He talked with a knife-hand to the standing soldiers. They immediately stopped looking, turned around and stood still. The LT peeled away from the newcomers group, going and disappearing inside of an airport hanger.

Ellie Joel and Ada stood beside the Captain as two separate platoons formed and a tall, bleach-blonde trans-female enlisted stepped out from SSG Kennedy's row. The rank on her chest was that of a Staff Sergeant, and her nameplate read 'HILDURG'. She began the customs for the ceremony. Claire Redfield hurried next to SSG Kennedy and stood ready. A stout muscular blonde man fell in, switching out his military cap (nameplate on the back read 'REDFIELD') with a black beret. The others followed suit.

Ada put everything on mute, until the ceremony was almost done.

"She has dedicated her life to the service of others and I respect her fortitude and leadership potential. She just successfully completed our airborne training course."

A pause as one of the soldiers in the Boonies formation clapped loudly.

"And it is with great pleasure that I am promoting Sergeant Redfield to the rank of Staff Sergeant in our Boonies Special Forces Platoon. We gotta figure out how to differentiate between you two now don't we?"

Another bout of laughter.

"Publish the order."

The Captain cleared his throat and read out the words on a messy crumpled paper.

The trans-female Staff Sergeant hit Redfield in the chest lightly-as was the custom for newly minted Staff Sergeants-and everyone cheered. SSG Hildurg announced,

"Two civilians just arrived along with one of our old specialists. Come on up you guys so we can formally welcome you."

"We're just gonna stay here." Joel said.

"Alright, understood. But everyone, these civilians are honored guests. Let's say welcome on the count of three."

The formation chanted, "Welcome!"

"FALL OUT!" Hildurg commanded.

When Ada felt Hildurg inspecting her, she looked up. Hildurg was giving her the evil eye.

"Wait!" SFC Oliviera called out. "Get back! Quick safety brief." He stepped out of formation to the front, facing everyone.

He waited until everyone was back in formation. "I cannot repeat this enough you guys; If it starts becoming violent, call the medic and she'll get sedatives-oh shit it's here."

The giant bioweapon stood beside the Captain (behind the formation) in a new set of fresh military cargopants. His claws mostly gone now from his hands-with stubby coffee brown fingers that seemed to end at the tarsals. He wore a military cap with the silver Liutenant rank on the front, but no military shirt of any kind, or shoes to hide his clawed wide feet. He walked up the middle of the two formations, cracking his hands behind his back. Ellie could see his nametag now, and it read 'SADE'

SFC Oliviera got back in formation, mumbling angrily. The Captain now rushed in front of the formation to stand loosely beside the large bioweapon. Troy's onyx skin was glistening from a fresh shower, and his red eyes were wide. He was moreso looking into the distance. Something was wriggling, trying to get out of the middle of his chin.

"The uhhh, LT…"

A very long minute or two pause as the Captain strained his neck looking up to double check the back of the LT's hat-a good four feet above the him.

"Sade?"

"…Brought these three back and that's pretty great." The formations applauded loudly. LT Sade walked back to the airport terminal as SFC Oliviera rushed back to the front again, trying to get the Captain not to speak.

"Great is certainly a word Captain. I need to speak with you and the new specialist now. FALLOUT."

Everyone was in a rush to get back to their quarters, running fast from the pavilion. SSG Kennedy was checking out Ada for a long while as he switched out his beret back to his military cap and walked slowly away.

Oliviera held out Ada's coat, and pulled the buds out to show the Captain.

"Explain this, Specialist." He glared down at Ada.

"I, don't know Ser'nt. I found the coat in the house. I needed warm clothes for the winter."

"I don't fucking believe that. You're such a fucking liar."

"Uh…what is this?"

"Sir she's smuggling drugs."

"Oh my! That's a…field-grade article 15!"

"Yes sir yes. Drug test her." Oliviera was moving his lower chin around in anger at the Captain.

"No sir, with all due respect Captain Chains." Ada cleared her injured throat and stared hard with wide innocent eyes at the shocked man, "I'm just an enlisted Specialist trying to stay warm without my uniform."

"Uniform."

"Yes sir no uniform sir, very cooooold." She visibly shivered in her dress.

"She doesn't look like a drug smuggler to me Sergeant Oliviera." Captain Chains said sympathetically. "She doesn't even have her uniform!"

SFC Oliviera rubbed his eyes hard, pushing his fingers into his eye socket bone. "Just! Drug test her, sir!"

The Captain was looking at Oliviera blankly. Oliviera exploded saying to Ada,

"Go get your fucking medical checkup. Go!"

Joel and Ellie were waiting dutifully for her with the now promoted Claire.

"Alright." Claire said apologetically, "I can't apologize enough for dragging you guys into this ceremony when you are all suffering so much. And Specialist, please tell me your name."

"Choi." Claire opened up the terminal glass doors and walked them up the zigzagging ramps. "Choi is such a pretty name. That's Korean?" Claire took off her military cap and tucked it into her cargopants. She let her hair into a loose ponytail. "You won't tell anybody about this will you Choi?"

Ada shook her head and chuckled at Claire, "Never."

"Well let me give you the SITREP, while we're walking. This was a FEDRA staging center for supplies. We worked with FEDRA here quite a bit through the years, moving goods in and out of the airbase. Now the FEDRA base is gone, so we are transferring this place over to a military contractor group and we ourselves are taking over their staging center up north. It's a tedious process-what was your job Choi?"

"Vehicle maintenance."

They went into a room labeled USO, which had cots and medical equipment in closets. Claire flashed a bracelet at them, that had been under her army fatigues. It had a green led light flashing on it. She dug through a drawer and put some into their hands. Ellie inspected it. BOW PROHIBITER written in small letters on the inside.

"I'm going to give each of you a shot of PRP-platelet rich plasma. That's going to speed up your healing process a hell of a lot. Then we got some ibuprofen and hot showers…this place is very quiet and peaceful. Also, we do have some other civilians flown in so just be mindful."

SSG Claire gave them all their much needed medical attention, and gave Ada a set of small army fatigues as well as a uniform for physical training. Claire didn't seem to think any of Ada's injuries were too serious. She handed out MREs to them all.

"Tomorrow morning we expect you 0600 hours for our PT session, Specialist Choi. You civilians are welcome to attend. Mess hall won't open until 0730. That's set up by the brick building-hot meals! Have a good night, I'll be on guard duty at 0100 hours so you might hear me walking around."

At 2230 hours, there was a small knock on the door, and then it opened. The light turned on in the room and a man in uniform made a beeline for Ada Wong.

His cap said, 'SUAREZ' His army rank insignia was that of a Sergeant.

He had an M16 rifle over his back.

"Specialist?" He shook her awake. "Hey sorry but it'll just be a moment. I'm Suarez-hey are you awake?"
"Mmph." She responded, putting the pillow over her head.

"Ok GOOD. You're awake. So I'm Suarez, the maintenance Sergeant. You're taking over my position now, I just wanted to give you a heads-up. We have two vehicles that we have to prepare-you know MRAPS? Yea so we need those ready to go EOD tomorrow. So I'm Suarez. You awake yea? Hey! HEY!"

Ellie whispered to a sleeping Joel and he started grumbling.

"You understand though right? We have a tag it and bag it Umbrella mission for a bloater, and then the new staging center needs to be surveyed."

Joel yelled, "GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE."

"Sorry sir I was just talking to this fe-"

"OUT!"

Suarez left quickly, turning the light off behind him and slamming the door.

0550 hours, Ada got up in the dark, fumbling around the small room of bunkbeds and falling down while putting on her black shorts. Ellie sat up gasping, but Joel was snoring on his side.

"Sorry Ms. Ellie!" Ada whispered.

Ellie looked at the small figure poking its head up from the floor at her.

"Hey can I call you Yume now?" Ellie asked curiously.

"Give me your hand Ms. Ellie." Ada fumbled with her other new shoe, then she signed into Ellie's hand.

'ESCAPE'. Ellie felt panicked elation. There was no way that the army-especially the Special Forces branch of the army, would just allow their property to run off unaccounted for. And yet, this young lady had done just that sometime between 2026 and now. So maybe this woman could pull it off.

"You know I would like very much to have a first name Ellie, but here just call me specialist."

"I'm coming with you specialist."

Ellie hustled along, trying to keep up with the small woman as they went through the small airport and down the ramp. The air froze in front of them as they decided to stay inside the doors of the airport to wait together.

Now Ada asked what had been on her own mind since she had found herself being carried along a street.

"Where are you going Ms. Ellie?"

"Just call me Ellie." Ellie signed to Ada 'FIREFLIES.'

"A lot of these FEDRA encampments…" Ada said carefully, "could've been saved." Ellie raised her eyebrow. "Yea?"

Ada nodded slowly. "If someone had warned them." Ada sighed and threw up her hands, "But! Past is in the past I guess-fuck it." She murmured again, "fuck it…"

Something was bothering her, because even as she was murmering, it was clear that there was something she could not let go of. Ellie was curious to find out, but knew the answers wouldn't come until they were back outside the base.
