Chapter 1, New in Town:

"I don't know what else to do Parakara, you always act like you are unhappy here." A light purple shelled magikoopa said to her daughter. She was waring a long lavender dress and matching pumps.

"Because I am! I've been telling you that for years! I could be happy if it were just us two, but you don't want to leave dad!" The paratroopa replied.

"You know I can't."

"At one point you could, but you didn't."

"Stop bringing that up! I keep telling you that I was sorry! Just let it go already!"

"You are always sorry mother! That's literally all you say! Every time something goes wrong, all you do is say "sorry" instead of trying to fix it!" Parakara said.

"If I never met your dad I wouldn't have had you." Kamala replied.

"That has nothing to do with what we're talking about now!"

"I'm just saying-"

"It doesn't matter! It's still irrelevant!"

"Don't cut me off, Parakara!"

The paratroopa groaned in frustration. "I still don't want to be here."

"Just patient Kara. One day we will have a home to ourselves."

"I don't want anymore empty promises either! I'll believe you when we actually do leave here."

"Kara..."

"I mean it!"

The magikoopa sighed in defeat. "Fine. gather your stuff. You can stay with your uncle for the time being...I just hate how he lives so far."

The paratroopa went to her room to pack. The magikoopa followed her. "I do love you." She said to her daughter.

"I know that mom."

"Do you love me?"

"Yes mom."

"Your dad says that you don't love me."

"If you're going to believe every lie that dad says, then that's your problem mom. You listening to dad is part of the reason why we're here now; don't you think?" Parakara replied.

"But you act like you don't." Kamala said.

"You act like you didn't love me when-"

"Let it go Kara! I just wanted to teach you to be a kind person and it backfired! I'm sorry! How many times do you want me to say it!?" Kamala interrupted.

"Is that it? You can cut me off, but I can't cut you off?" Parakara asked.

"Because you're a teenager! I'm your mother!"

Parakara did not not say anything else. Her mom always used the "I'm your mother." sentence to shut her down.

"I'm sorry." She finally said.

"Like I said before. You always are." Parakara zips up her bag.

"You're not going to tell me sorry?" Kamala asked.

"What for?"

"For cutting me off first."

"If you just listened me and stopped trying to derail the conversation I wouldn't have cut you off."

"I don't do that Kara."

Parakara sighed annoyed. "This isn't getting us anywhere mom."

"Say you're sorry."

"Fine. I'm sorry."

"Before you leave, take this." Kamala gave her daughter a broom.

"I'm a paratroopa."

"You'll have another way to fly in case you break a wing. You'll never know. I always wanted to teach you how to use one, but was never able to get around to it. You're very smart though. I'm sure you'll figure it out on your own. You knew how to use magic before you knew how to use your wings."

"Because I didn't have my flight feathers."

"You weren't supposed have your magic at that age either, but yet you were able to use it."

Parakara took the broom.

"Do you have your glasses?"

"Yes."

"And your wand?"

"That too."

"Can I at least visit you?" Kamala asked.

"Never said you couldn't. Even if I said "no" You'd probably do it anyway. You never listened to me."

"I did."

"Whenever it was too late."

"I hope you don't behave this way with your uncle."

"I don't think I will, because I'll be away from dad."

"If you say so. I hope you're right."

Parakara picks up her bag.

"You know where to go don't you?" Kamala asked her daughter.

"Toad Town."

"Alright."

Meanwhile, at Toad Town a certain mail-delivering paratroopa was remodeling his attic. He asked the postmaster to have time off of work until the room was done. He wanted his niece to feel at home when she arrived. He spent his first week cleaning out the attic. He didn't have too much because he spent the majority of his days delivering letters. Or looking for letters he lost. So we was mainly cleaning up cobwebs and dust bunnies. On the second week, he had toads install insulation in the walls. When the walls were done, the toads painted them light purple. For the floor they placed pink carpet. Afterward, they replaced the window with a newer one. The postman couldn't remember how long that process took. He added pink curtains over the new window when it was ready. He decorated the bed with pink sheets and a pink comforter with yellow stars on it. He placed three star shaped pillows, one was pink, the other light purple, and the last one yellow; and then a horse stuffed animal he bought for her. He decorated the room with horse paintings and added a flower floor lamp. It took about a month or so for the room to be ready.

"Sir, I came across this in one of the boxes. Not sure if you wanted us to put it in the room." A toad said to him. It was a small and cute brown antique tv.

"Do you know if it can be restored?" Parakarry asked.

"I'm not an electrician or anything. But I can get one for you." The toad replied.

"Alright, place it against the middle of the wall for the time being," Parakarry replied. The toad got another toad to help move it to the spot.

"Here's the bill." The toad handed him a sheet of paper. The paratroopa widened his eyes seeing it. Four thousand coins for a remodel! He was definitely going to spend most of his days mailing letters to pay it off. But it was for his niece and he'd do anything for her. He hoped he won't lose any letters on the job. At least until the bill was fully paid.

"Okay." He folds the paper up.

"Need us to do anything else?" Asked a toad. Parakarry shows them the folded paper. "The room looks good for now."

"Alright then, call us if there need to be any repairs." The toads gathered their tools before leaving. Parakarry looked at the room. He hoped nothing will need repairing any time soon. The remodeling bill was already expensive. He flew into the kitchen and made himself koopa tea as he waited for Parakara. About an hour later she rings the doorbell. Parakarry answers and hugs her. "Welcome sweetheart. Come inside."

Parakara flew inside.

"Your room is the attic. Want to see?" He asked. She answered by nodding. Parakarry flew up to the attic. Parakara followed, she smiled a little at the sight.

"I bought you a stuffed horse. Your mother said you like horses. Not sure if you still do." He said. Parakara wondered why he remodeled the attic to begin with. With how the room looked, it was like he was expecting her. Her mom had to have been talking to him about her moving for some time. But she was so adamant about staying together as a family. It sounded just like her mom to keep things from her; but preach that they only had each other at the same time.

"I still do." Parakara answered.

"Great to hear." He said smiling. Parakara looked at the tv.

"I don't think that works yet. I plan on getting someone to fix it up for you. You're welcome to the living room tv at least." The young paratroopa looked around the room as her uncle spoke.

"I knew I forgot something. You need a wardrobe for your clothes and a desk. I'll see if I can get those things as well. Next week you'll go to your new school."

Parakara replied with a nod.

"You have always been a quiet one." He gives her a list of emergency numbers. "Sometimes I will be gone days at a time. Depends on how much mail I have to deliver. Here's a list of numbers to call in case something happens. Mine is at the bottom. If you ever need me, just say so. No matter where I'm at, I'll fly back here."

Parakara takes the list and folds it. He and her dad were polar opposites.

"Don't tell your mother what I told you. I don't think she'd want you here, if she knew that bit of information. She acts like you can't be alone. You seem like someone who'd prefer to stay out of trouble though. Your mom always says you're a good kid. So I don't know why she thinks you can't be unsupervised."

Parakara never understood why her mom has always been overprotective of her. It got on her nerves. But according to her mom; "Smothering is mothering."

"Besides, I didn't like how your dad has been treating you. Your mom had always beaten around the bush, by saying you and your dad are "trying" to get along. But come on. Even a dull-witted mailman like me can put two and two together. I know what your father is like. I grew up with him after all. Plus if things were going so smoothly why would she call me nearly all the time?" Parakarry said. Parakara merely listened. She wondered what her dad did that made them fall apart. She wasn't sure if she should ask though.

"Follow me downstairs." Parakarry flew down the attic. Parakara followed him. "No bringing random strangers over, sticking forks in outlets, playing with knives, or drinking poison. Although I'm sure you already knew that." Parakarry said; Parakara giggled.

"I got a laugh from you. I guess that counts." He opens the freezer. "As I said before, there may be times I'll be gone for a few days. You can help yourself to frozen dinners if I'm not here." He closed the freezer. "And to tell you the truth. I will be gone. I spent weeks, probably months getting your room ready, so I'm sure the postmaster has have a load of stuff for me to deliver." Parakara giggled again.

"That's funny to you?" Parakarry asked. She smiled bashfully.

"Don't be shy. Mi casa, su casa. At least I think that's how you say it. I don't know. All I know is Koopish and English." Parakarry said to her. Parakara giggled a little more.

"I guess after a bit of time you'll start talking. Though your mom did say it was like pulling teeth with you whenever she asked you questions." He stretched a bit. "In the meantime, I'm going to nap. It's going to be a long day at work tomorrow. Make yourself at home. Adjust." He added. The older paratroopa flew into his room. Parakara flew back up the attic. She looked through the window amazed at how much of Toad Town she could see. She decided to go outside to look around town for a bit. There were toads walking around. Some had mushroom hats with red spots. Some had other colors. The reptilian girl decided to check out the blue building that was on top of some stairs. She stepped inside and saw that it was a dojo. She doubted she would come here often. She found herself to be more of a ballet type of girl. Young toads were practicing sanchin by an elderly toad wearing a deep crimson red robe and mushroom hat with golden accents. Not wanting to disturb the class she quietly left the dojo and went into the next building. It was an item shop. For sale were mushrooms, honey syrup, fire flowers, pow blocks, sleepy sheeps, and fright jars. Parakara bought a fire flower. Her mother said they're always useful for fire spells. She checked out the next building. It was a library. Inside was a toad wearing glasses, a bule vest, and a white mushroom hat with dark blue spots.

"Salutations, young lady. I'm Russ T. Looking for anything in particular?"

"Oh, no. Just looking." The reptilian girl answered. The toad nodded and went back to the books. Parakara picked up a book that was about a girl who was nervous about going to school, so she took her pet spiders with her, and ended up getting ridiculed by her classmates. Which led to a lot of problems between her and her mom. Parakara felt bad for the girl. The book made her think about her and her mom. Whenever she got bullied for something her mom blamed her for it most of the time. She went to Russ T. to check out the book before leaving the library. Beside the library was a green pipe. Parakara did not go inside. You never really know where pipes lead you to. They could lead you to someone else's house. Or the sewers. She went further down and saw a lavender house with a blue spinning roof. She wondered who lived in such eccentric house. She reads the sign beside it.

That made Parakara laugh a little. She reads the front of the sign.

"A Star Gala? That sounds fun. I'm going to ask my parents if I can go. At the same time they always take me to these parties. They work at the castle after all." A female toad around her age said. She had a white mushroom hat with mint green hearts. Her strawberry blonde hair in braided twin tails. She had hazel eyes and a cute mint green dress. She turned to Parakara and smiled. "Hi. I'm Toaderiel."

"Parakara. You can also say Kara." She said.

"Kara? That's cute. I never seen you around here before."

"I just moved here. I'm from Twilight Town."

"Twilight Town? That sounds spooky. Not as spooky as Forever Forest though. Welcome!"

"Thanks. It's not too bad, I don't think. The doll people look a little creepy though."

"Either way it still sounds spooky to me..." She paused for a bit. "Since you said you just moved here I'm guessing you don't go to Mushroom Kingdom High?"

"I don't. I went to a school near Rogueport."

"Rogueport? Sounds seedy."

"It is rather sketchy."

Toaderiel nodded. "Well, I have to go somewhere. Since you moved up here maybe I'll see you at school?"

"Maybe. My uncle said I'll start next week."

"Great, hope to see you there." The blonde toad left. Parakara went inside the post office. There was an elderly paratroopa with round rimmed glasses, a bluish gray hat, A light blue shirt with the Toad Town Post Office logo embroidered on the shoulder. Dark blue dress pants, and an olive green shell. The reptilian man had an air of sternness and stubbornness about him.

"Good evening miss. Welcome to the post office." The postmaster looked over her. "I haven't seen you before...you must be Parakarry's niece."

"I am." She said timidly, feeling a little intimidated by his presence. He gave her a small and kind smile.

"Well I'm the postmaster here. What brings you to my post office?"

"Curious to see where my uncle worked."

"What do you think of the town so far?" He asked.

"It's nice." She replied." Although "nice" doesn't even begin to describe Toad Town. But Parakara wasn't much of a talker. Most of the kids at her old school either bullied her or didn't know her name. So she didn't bother talking too much. Besides she wanted to take in her surroundings. The postmaster nodded.

"Alright, If you ever need anything that has something to do with a letter or package, don't hesitate to ask me. I know you are new here and probably have lots of questions." He said, Parakara nodded as a thanks.

"Say...I don't suppose you want a part time job here do you? You're uncle hasn't been at work here for a long while. Because he wanted to get your room ready. I could use a little more help...but of course one Parakarry is enough. If you know what I mean." He said.

"I don't know what you mean..." Parakara said twirling the end of her lavender purple hair nervously; not knowing that her uncle was known as the slowest mailman around Toad Town. She also didn't know that he helped Mario save the Mushroom Kingdom.

"Oh. Nevermind then; and welcome to Toad Town." He replied, Parakara nodded as a thanks again before leaving. She headed back home planning on to explore more of Toad Town tomorrow. Inside, Parakarry was sitting on the sofa watching a movie eating chips with mushroom dip. He turned to see his niece.

"I was wondering where you were Kara. I figured that you went to look around." He said.

"I did."

"Want to watch a movie with me? There's chips and mushroom dip in the kitchen."

Parakara went to the kitchen to get some. She sat a space apart from Parakarry.

"Come closer. I'm not going to bite you." Parakarry teased. Parakara moved a little closer towards him. The movie was about a prince who got captured and tortured by a rival kingdom, but was saved by the princess of the kingdom, and they both decided to elope.

"Uncle, what's a Star Gala?" Parakara asked.

"So you read the board? It's just one of Peach's many parties." Parakarry answered. Parakara scooped up a bit a dip before eating the chip. "I can take you if I'm not too busy on that day. Of course we'll have to find you something pretty to wear."

"No, it's fine uncle. I don't want to go." Parakara replied. While it did sound fun, the thought of going to a party made her anxious at the same time.

"Are you sure? Then why did you ask what it was?"

"Wondering, that's all."

"I'm still going to see if I can take you anyway. I think you'll love her castle. The food is also really good." Parakarry said. Parakara smiled a bit as she took another bite of her chips and dip. The two watched a the movie until the credits. Parakarry got up from his seat and kissed Parakara's forehead. "Goodnight sweetie. I hope you will like Toad Town." The older paratroopa flew to his room. Parakara flew to her room. She couldn't get over how cute it was. It was cuter than the one she had back home. She sat on her new bed and read a few pages from her book before going to sleep.
