Dark blue eyes narrowed in suspicion at the seeming joyful man that sat across from her. His lips were pulled into a friendly smile, his eyes hidden by a pair of round black sunglasses. He wore a uniform of some sort, a dark blue almost black long sleeved shirt and a matching pair of slacks. His white hair was messy, looking like at one point it had been spiked but the humidity of the hot summer day had made it deflate.
He looked normal, despite his silver white locks, a bit bland if she was being honest. Yet it was what went unseen that put her on edge.
He was powerful, his aura was borderline over bearing and she knew that what she felt now was just the stray wisps that would not be confined. Like the fine hairs at the nape of one's neck that always seemed to escape one's ponytail despite every effort to tame them.
Next to him sat her Jii-chan, the years had hard on him, on all of them. His face held more wrinkles, his fine hair was no longer salt and pepper but fully gray. He stooped over, hunching his shoulders so as to not aggravate his bad back. A proud smile on his lips, his very aura preened with pride. It was the happiest she had seen him since she had been spit out of the well barely alive all those months ago.
It made guilt stab at her heart, tearing her gaze away from both males she turned azure eyes to gaze at the green tea in her cup. She used to hate the flavor, it was for old people and now here she was taking comfort in the taste and aroma of it. Allowing it to take her back five hundred years in time to a small wooden hut, the sounds of laughter and happiness surrounding her. Said happiness was like the hut that once stood on the shrine grounds all those years ago, forgotten and torn to shreds by time's cruel hands.
It was now just a distant memory.
"Kagome?" Her grandfather's voice pulled her from her thoughts of a time long lost to her. Faking a sheepish smile she glanced at him, taking note of the worry that swam in his dark brown eyes. It made her heart fracture just a bit more. Even now she was causing her family to worry, to hurt.
"Ah, sorry Jii-chan it's just ,this is a bit sudden. I mean I'm eighteen now, a legal adult, I was planning on just getting my GED and taking over the shrine...not going back to school let alone as a freshmen in high school." Her voice was tactful, her words firm yet coated in honey so as to not offend either of the males in the small kitchen with her. Her mother and Souta were out shopping for supplies for the house, a clever ruse from her grandfather to make sure it was just them at home when their sudden 'surprise' visitor showed up.
He offered tales of magic, curses and a school for gifted people like them. It made her want to laugh in his face.
She was not gifted, no she was cursed.
Everywhere she went death and chaos followed. She was merely eighteen but had lived a thousand lives already. She was ready to just settle down at home and be left alone. Yet here was this man barging into her life with promises of adventure and heroic deeds. His very aura was a damn beacon, already she could feel the dark twisted, slimy, auras of what he called curses pressing into the barrier she had placed around her ancestral home.
They were like moths to the flame, pressing and slamming into her barrier to gain access. It was starting to give her a headache, she turned sharp eyes to the still smiling man, she knew he could feel them as well and he was content to just ignore the foul creatures clawing at her barrier to get in. Giving a small huff she flared her powers ignoring the way the man seemed to leer at her through his dark shades. In an instant the curses were gone, turned to ash by her miko powers.
Task done she pulled her power back into her, ignoring the playful swipe of the man's own aura. It was a playful touch, as if asking her to come out and play. She blatantly ignored it as she turned an innocent smile to her grandfather, hoping to quell his worries. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity but it's a very big decision. I'd like some time to think about it, if that's okay."
A lie.
She'd already made up her mind. She was not going to accept the offer, not only did she want to be left alone but she knew that to accept the offer would be to accept whatever price that came with it. No one did something for anyone, let alone a stranger, without an ulterior motive or something to gain. It was a truth that had been painfully learned by her. Taught to her by greedy, selfish, humans and demons alike.
Those around her had only shook their heads at her, she should have known. Well, now she did and she would not fall for yet another smiling face with a hand extended in friendship.
The man, Gojo as he had introduced himself, leaned forward a bit, his hands resting on the table. "Of course, take all the time you need. Just be aware that the longer you take to say yes the farther behind you'll be from your classmates." His voice was light and teasing, yet the absolute finality that hid in his voice. As if he not only knew but had decided she would say yes. It irked her, this man was confidant, borderline cocky it made her want to bare her teeth at him. Instead she merely smiled at him and nodded, her aura fluctuating in a 'fuck you' motion. It merely made him smile and let out a light chuckle.
Standing up she nodded at him as well as her grandfather. "Well I better get back to my chores. I'll let you know my decision later. Jii-chan, Gojo-san." Nodding at them she turned on her heel to leave the room ignoring the laughter of Gojo as her grandfather offered excuses for her attitude. Snorting, she left the house and wandered back to the God tree picking up her discarded broom and began the mechanical movements of sweeping. Her mind once again floating back to the past she had been forced to leave behind.
