Chapter Twenty-Seven

Another day on the boiling isles, the girls have settled in pretty well since coming here. This morning, Eda is cooking something on the stove. Luz was finishing her homework while Danielle had already finished it yesterday when getting what she was steadily beginning to call home away from home.

"So, they said I couldn't remove my thumb, but look at that!" said Luz, talking to Willow and Gus on the crystal ball and pretending to remove her thumb. "Whoop!"

"You sliced it off!" said Gus, panicking. "You sliced off your own thumb!"

"You make doing homework actually fun," said Willow, chuckling.

"And they say humans can't do magic," said Luz, staring at Willow and Gus.

"Luz..." said King, climbing on the table. "Nyeh! You've been talking to them all morning. Don't forget about the Luz and King comedy hour!"

"Please, no," said Eda and Danielle, staring at Luz and King. "Not the comedy hour..."

"This week I've been working with props! Oh dear, I've gotten a tube stuck on my nose! Will I ever eat again?" said King, placing a cardboard tube on his nose before slamming a piece of toast on his face. "Looks like I'm toast!"

"It just goes on like this for an hour!" said Eda, hearing Danielle groan as well.

"Puns are weird," said Aster, watching King and Luz. "I prefer tongue twisters."

"Sul tagliere gli agli taglia non tagliare la tovaglia la tovaglia non è aglio se la tagli fai uno sbaglio," said Danielle, saying a tongue twister before saying another one in polish. "W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie I Szczebrzeszyn z tego słynie. Wół go pyta: Panie chrząszczu, Po cóż pan tak brzęczy w gąszczu?"

"Exactly," said Aster, smiling. "They're more fun."

"Heyo, dough boy, quit loafing around!" said Luz, poking the cardboard tube.

"Why don't you bake me?" said King, laughing with Luz.

"Know anymore tongue twisters?" asked Aster, before the crystal ball went off like an alarm clock, flashing red as well.

"Looks like school time," said Danielle, grabbing her backpack and Aster climbing into her hood.

"School time!" said Luz, seeing 8am flash on the crystal ball. "See you guys in class!"

"Bye!" said Willow, waving bye.

"But what about the thumb?!" asked Gus, still panicking.

"Will be explained when we get there," replied Danielle, looking at Gus before Luz ends the call.

"Hey, don't worry. We'll finish our comedy hour when I get home," said Luz, seeing King sigh before kissing the top of his skull.

"Hee hee, oh, you!" said King, giggling.

"I wish King enjoyed playing with me as much as he does with Luz," thought Danielle, gripping the straps of her backpack. "Maybe I should see if I can get the home game console up soon then he can play alongside me and Aster."

"Try not to miss me while I'm gone!" said Luz, closing the door.

"You... you really think she's coming back this time?" asked King, scrambling to the door.

"Yes, she'll be back; she always comes back," replied Eda, going back to stirring whatever is in the pot. "It's cute you miss her, though."

"The King of Demons…" said King, before tossing the bread and cardboard tube off. "The King of Demons misses nobody! I wouldn't care if she came through this door right now! Wha!"

"Hey, you're…" said Eda, seeing the girls and Aster back at the house.

"You're back!" said King, climbing onto Luz's head. "I didn't miss you at all."

"Danielle, are you okay?" asked Aster, seeing Danielle a little downcast.

"I'll be fine Aster," replied Danielle, before thinking. "It's too early for this."

"Apparently there's an infestation of pixies at Hexside, so school's been canceled," said Luz, staring at Eda.

"I had to run when they started to cling to me," said Danielle, only to feel Aster move about in her hood. "Aster, what are you…"

"Out. Go on, shoo," said Aster, shooing some pixies out of Danielle's hood. "Silly pixies."

"That explains it," said Danielle, seeing the pixies fly out the door.

"That sounds like a crumby situation," said King, getting Luz to laugh with him.

"Quick," said Aster, staring at Danielle. "Another tongue twister."

"Sumomo mo momo, momo mo momo, sumomo mo momo mo momo no uchi," said Danielle, reciting a Japanese one this time.

"Hey! Guess what's been in my mouth that I'm about to throw up!" said Hooty, coming in through the kitchen door and started gagging for several long moments before letters and a box come out of his mouth. "The mail!"

"Junk, junk, death hex," said Eda, going through the letters and tossing the death hex into the trash before spotting a certain flier. "Oh, a carnival's in town today!"

"Carnival!" said Aster, smiling and wagging his tail. "I could never go to one back home. Let's go!"

"A carnival?" said Luz, taking King off her head. "You know, I've been so busy with school lately, what do you say we take this comedy hour on tour? It'll be a Luz and King day!"

"That's my kinda day!" said King, staring at Luz.

"What about me?" thought Danielle, looking at Luz and King while rubbing her arm.

"Danielle…" said Aster, staring at Danielle before thinking. "I can never understand when she's like this."

"Let's all five of us go!" said Luz, linking arms with Eda and Danielle.

"An adventure with friends! I'll go pack my stuff!" said Hooty, leaving the kitchen.

"Carnivals bring crowds and crowds bring suckers. This could be the perfect chance to try out my new get-witch-quick scheme," said Eda, taking her staff out of the pot and flinging goop off of Owlbert. "I'm in! To the carnival!"

"Wait…" said Danielle, staring at Owlbert. "Were you using Owlbert to stir all this time?"

"To the carnival!" said Luz and King, cheering.

"Wait," said Danielle, running after everyone as they left the house. "What about Hooty?"

"Good news, I'm bringing my knapsack full of games! Hello?" said Hooty, seeing everyone gone before a fly buzzes by. " Oh, a fly! Talk to me, talk to me!"

Mounting Eda's staff, Eda, the girls, Aster, and King head towards Bonesborough. Once there, they landed and walked the rest of the way there. Spotting some amusements from where they were, everyone spots the Bonesborough carnival.

"Well, here we are, kids," said Eda, walking pass the entrance. "Look at all that fresh meat."

"And smell all the fresh meat!" said Luz, inhaling before a fly goes up her nose before coughing it out her mouth. "Fun!"

"You okay?" asked Danielle, checking on Luz.

"I'm fine," replied Luz, staring at the carnival stands.

"No games for you, Owlbert, we've got scams to run," said Eda, stopping Owlbert from flying away.

"Maybe once over with," said Danielle, looking at Owlbert. "We could play games."

"Friends!" said Tibbles, jumping in front of everyone. "Welcome! I see you got my postcard."

"Tibbles? You sent this?" said Eda, looking at the flier better.

"I'm keeping this," said Danielle, liking the holographic flier.

"Mm-hmm," said Tibbles, doing the same dance on the flier, Danielle giggling a little.

"Aren't you mad at us for destroying your stand?" asked Luz, staring at Tibbles.

"Ooh, and destroying his life!" said King, pointing at Tibbles. "That was the best part!"

"Not to me, it wasn't," thought Danielle, while thinking. "Once I'm decent enough with my construction, I'll fix his stand. Or I can do it by hand. I think I saw some good material in a junkyard."

"No, no, no. I should thank you. After my stand was destroyed, I reevaluated my life and found my true calling! I'm now ringmaster of..." said Tibbles, cracking a whip. "Tibbles's Tent of Tiny Terrors!"

"This can't be their normal size," thought Danielle, looking at tiny animals in a terrarium. "Poor things."

" Aww. It's like a regular circus but adorably small!" said Luz, a tiny griffin hissing at her. "You're my friends now."

"I don't buy it," said Eda, sending her staff away. "What kind of con are you running?"

"No cons here, Owl Lady, only pros. In fact, why don't we toast our newfound friendship with this totally innocent bottle of water," said Tibbles, bringing out a translucent purple bottle with purple liquid splashing about inside.

"Oh yeah, sure! Why don't I just…" said Eda, grabbing the bottle and throwing it hitting a Hexside teacher.

"Are you okay?" asked Danielle, startled when the Hexside Teacher fell on the ground and running over.

"I'm okay!" said the Hexside Teacher, giving a thumbs up.

"It really doesn't look it to me," said Danielle, helping the Hexside Teacher up.

"Thanks anyway," said the Hexside Teacher, walking away.

"I know poison when I see it; you can't scam a scammer! Now speaking of scams... Beat it loser!" said Eda, knocking a vendor's stuff to the ground before transforming the stand. "Step right up to... Eda's Human Horror House! Humans shed their skin and I've got proof."

"a Carnevale ogni scherzo vale," said Danielle, seeing Eda show off Luz's fishnet stockings.

"Ha, I don't know what that means," said Eda, staring at Danielle. "But I like it."

"You should really put a lock on your closet," said King, seeing the fishnet stockings as well.

"You know what, Eda can pick through my socks all she wants," said Luz, waving it off. "Because today is all about having a great time with my partner in crime."

"That's me!" said King, pointing to himself. "I love crime!"

"Uh… Luz, King," said Danielle, running after the two. "Wait for me and Aster."

"I wonder what games carnivals have," said Aster, looking around.

"Have a good time, friends," said Tibbles, whispering. "While it lasts."

Walking down one of the carnival streets, the girls, Aster and King look at the various vendors. One such game was dunking a skeleton in a dunk tank. Aster is wagging his tail in excitement seeing the many games.

"So many games!" said Aster, hopping around on Danielle.

"Someone is enjoying themselves," said Danielle, smiling at Aster's excitement.

"Now this is my kind of weird! So, what do you wanna do first?" asked Luz, seeing a roller coaster nearby. "We could brave the molar coaster, or eat a mysterious blob..."

"I could never handle the loop de loop ones," said Danielle, seeing the roller coaster.

"Ooh, what's that?" asked King, running over to a prize booth. "Ah! Some kind of deadly string weapon."

"No, silly," said Luz, staring at King. "That's a friendship bracelet."

"Friendship bracelet?" said Aster, staring at the bracelets.

"Is that a type of deadly weapon?" asked King, staring at Luz.

"A weapon of love," replied Luz, grabbing the friendship bracelets and placing them together, forming a heart. "It's basically a declaration to the whole world that you're the best of friends."

"Danielle, we have to get one," said Aster, gasping and wagging his tail. "The best of friends. Me and Danielle!

"Sure," said Danielle, scratching Aster's chin.

"Ooh! That's way safer than becoming blood brothers!" said King, staring at Luz and the bracelets.

"And yoink," said the Prize Vendor, grabbing the bracelets back. "Sorry, ma'am. If your bone son wants these bracelets, you'll have to play the games and win the tickets. You know, carnival rules."

"So that's how it is," said Aster, eyeing the bracelets. "You have to have tickets to get them."

"Yup, they're prizes here," said Danielle, staring at Aster. "Depending on how many tickets you have depends on the prize you want. As you can see on the tags next to the items, that's how many tickets you need to get it."

"Yes, let's do it!" said Aster, pointing in the direction of some games. "Games, that a way."

"Beat up the man and steal his things for me," said King, tugging on the cuffs of Luz's shorts.

"Or let's just play the games," said Luz, staring at King.

"Oh, okay," said King, pushing Luz in the direction of the games, laughing in the process and chanting alongside Luz. "Games! Games! Games! Games!"

"Oh," said Danielle, spotting Willow and Gus nearby. "Willow and Gus are here."

"Friends!" said Luz, spotting Willow and Gus as well.

Willow was sporting a new look today. Was wearing a long sleeved yellowish-tan dress that has a blue tie with an oval chartreuse gem on it, light gray and ash gray striped leggings, and brown boots. Gus as well was sporting a new look as well. Was wearing a cyan tunic with gray-white sleeves and a black belt. He also wears charcoal gray tights and dark purple boots.

"Luz!" said Willow, walking over. "Danielle!"

"Hey, Luz!" said Gus, walking over as well. "Hey, Danielle!"

"Why aren't they adding you to the group hug?" asked Aster, seeing the three hug.

"It's okay," said Danielle, staring at the three before sighing.

"But…" said Aster, staring at Danielle.

"Oh my gosh, I didn't think I'd see carniv-y'all here," said Luz, pointing at Willow and Gus.

"Mmm," said Danielle, shaking her head when Luz mentioned carniv-ya'll.

"Boo," said Gus, giving a thumbs down.

"I got an invitation from Tibbles," said Willow, taking out the same flier addressed to her and Gus.

"We figured it's a trap since we squashed his stand with a walking house," said Gus, smiling.

"But who cares?" said Willow, getting excited. "This place has a Scarris wheel."

"I care," thought Danielle, staring at Willow.

"It's like a human Ferris wheel but it gives you long-lasting nightmares," said Gus, excited as well.

"I don't think I want nightmares," said Danielle, backing away slightly. "I-I'll stick to games and rides that won't do that."

"Yes!" said Luz, excited. "This mama is ready for trauma."

"Ahem," said King, gaining Luz's attention.

"Oh, yeah," said Luz, staring at Willow and Gus. "We're on a very important quest to win a special prize for King."

"Me and Danielle too," said Aster, staring back at the prize booth. "I want those friendship bracelets."

"Oh!" said Willow, staring at Luz. "We can help with that."

"Aw. Does the little guy wanna win a prize? Uh, does he? Uh, does he?" said Gus, cooing while waving his finger in front of King.

"Gus," said Danielle, seeing King push Gus's finger away. "I don't think that was the right thing to do.

"Is he making fun of King?" asked Aster, eyeing Gus. "Cause, if he is…"

"What do you think, King?" asked Luz, staring at King. "The more the merrier, huh?"

"Um, sure," said King, not really wanting to. "Whatever you want, Luz."

"All right," said Luz, cheering. "Approval!"

"King… are you okay?" said Danielle, seeing King walking further behind the others before thinking. "No, I can't let King feel left out. I can't let him feel like I do on occasions."

Willow, Luz, and Gus cheer. The three of them jog away. King tries to keep up and trips. Danielle picks King up and holds hands with him as they go after the others. Willow rolls a skee-ball into the machine's mouth. Luz and Gus cheer her on and the three of them run off. King arrives and gets hit with the ball when the machine spits it at him. Danielle picks up the skee-ball and places it in King's hands while Danielle grabs another and gives it to Aster. Both King and Aster throw the ball and hit dead center and get a few tickets. Catching up after Luz, Willow and Gus, they notice a picture board. Since there were only four holes, only Willow, Luz, Gus and King stuck their heads in but King is stuck with being the trashcan, Danielle and Aster gasp seeing King looking sad. Afterwards, after having stopped at a food vendor and grabbing a mystery glob on a stick, Luz takes a bite out of a fried orb and hands it to Willow, who takes a small bite out of it and hands it to Gus, who finishes the rest, leaving none for King, who had been between Willow and Gus. Danielle is not liking that Luz is ignoring King just cause Willow and Gus came by. Luz, Willow, and Gus are leaning against a stand.

"So, the pixie infestation was actually caused when Boscha's pet pixie escaped its cage..." said Willow, explaining the pixie problem at school to Luz.

"Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm," said Luz, listening intently.

"Here, we go," said Danielle, lifting King up on the stand.

"Thanks Danielle," said King, before pointing the dart while Aster casted a wind tunnel from dart to a polyp and joining as well. "Oooh…"

"Nice shot you two," said Danielle, the tickets being handed to her. "Having fun?"

"Yes," replied Aster, before staring at Luz, Willow and Gus. "Why are they ignoring King?"

"Kinda," replied King, sighing before staring at Luz before running off. "What happened to the Luz and King day?"

"King, wait up," said Danielle, gasping before looking at Aster. "Come on, let's go after King. I think he needs us."

"Okay," said Aster, following after Danielle.

As King was running away, he stops at a nearby narrow booth and sits down. King looks at a poster reading CARNIVAL best with friends and sighs.

"Oh, my, my, my," said Tibbles, from within the booth. "You seem troubled."

"Weh?" said King, getting up and staring at booth. "Who said that?"

"It is I," said Tibbles, opening the curtain and revealing him wearing a party hat and a fake mustache. "Obvioso, the all-seeing psychic."

"Haven't I seen you somewhere?" asked King, trying to get a good look at Tibbles. "It's almost so..."

"Obvious?" replied Tibbles, spreading his arms out.

"That's what I was gonna say," said King, staring at Tibbles. "Wow! You really are psychic."

"You're right," said Tibbles, leaning against the counter. "And Obvioso can see that something is bothering you, little friend."

"You got my number, Obvioso. Today was supposed to be about me and Luz, see?" said King, sighing and crossing his arms over his chest. "But now she's distracted by her cool new school friends."

"What if I were to tell you that there was a way to make all those problems... disappear?" said Tibbles, staring at King.

"I'd say that sounds illegal," said King, staring at Tibbles. "I would also say go on."

"Behold!" said Tibbles, grabbing the purple bottle from earlier from under the booth but now had a spray nozzle to it.

"Holy bones! You poofed it," said King, seeing Tibbles spray a nearby creature on a perch before it disappears with a flash of pink light. "Call the cops! This guy's crazy!"

"Hey. The spray is only temporary. I just give my cheeks a tap and then..." said Tibbles, tapping his cheeks twice and the creature reappearing on the perch. "It returns safe and sound. Take this. Enjoy the carnival without the problems. Luz, Danielle, Willow, and Gus will be none the wiser."

"Whoa! You even know their names. Guess there's no use arguing with a fortune-teller. Thanks, Obvioso," said King, holding the purple bottle and walking away before returning for a split second. "Hey. Side note: in the future, do I ever find love?"

"Uh... yes?" said Tibbles, sighing after King leaves.

"King, there you are," said Danielle, spotting King and checking on him. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," said King, waving Danielle off.

"Huh…" said Danielle, confused before seeing Luz come there way with Willow and Gus.

"King!" said Luz, walking over. "Sorry we lost you back there, little dude."

"You didn't lose him," said Danielle, looking at Luz. "You were pushing him to the side when Willow and Gus showed up."

"She was?" said Aster, staring at Danielle before eyeing Luz.

"Hey, it's okay," said King, placing the purple bottle in his fanny pack before grabbing Luz's hand. "Let's go back to the games and win those bracelets."

"And of course," thought Danielle, looking at Luz and King, downcast. "She doesn't hear me. Why does this keep happening to me?"

"Danielle…" said Aster, not liking that Luz ignored Danielle and placed a paw on her cheek. "I heard."

"I know Aster," said Danielle, still looking downcast. "I know you heard."

"But we haven't gone on any rides and there's no line for the bumper carcasses," said Gus, grabbing Luz's other hand.

"Games!" said King, pulling Luz's hands and getting angry.

"Carcasses!" said Gus, glaring at King.

"Games!" said King, getting even angrier.

"Carcasses!" said Gus, still glaring at King.

"Abbastanza!" shouted Danielle, orbs of hot water hovering over everyone.

"Whoa," said Willow, backing away from the orbs of hot water. "Okay, okay."

"Food!" said Luz, hearing her stomach growl before walking away. "I'm gonna grab some rotten candy while you guys figure this out. Byeee!"

"I hate this," thought Danielle, pulling her hair back. "There's got to be some middle ground I can find for everyone to enjoy the carnival."

"When Luz comes back let's go on the three-man cauldron spinner," said Willow, staring at Gus.

"Or the triple swing," said Gus, staring at Willow.

"Oh, and that's close to those photo booths that can fit exactly three people," said Willow, staring at Gus.

"Huh…" said Danielle, her eyes going cloudy. "Three?"

"Danielle," said Aster, staring at Danielle and seeing her pale slightly. "You're not looking so good."

"I'm fine," said Danielle, holding her emotions in, little barely noticeable sparks coming from her hands. "I'll be fine."

"But…" said Aster, before thinking. "You don't look fine."

"But today was me and Luz's day," said Gus, staring to the side.

"Aw. Does the little baby boo miss his buddy Luz?" asked Gus, picking King up. "Uh, does he? Uh, does he?"

"Gus, stop treating King like he's a baby," said Danielle, her eyes still cloudy. "He doesn't like it."

"The King of Demons misses nobody," said King, struggling out of Gus's hold. "I demand you put me down!"

"Huh…" said Danielle, seeing the purple bottle fall out of King's fanny pack and spray Willow and Gus.

"What?" said Willow and Gus, before disappearing in a pink flash.

"What happened to them?" asked Aster, before focusing his eyes on the ground and spotting Willow and Gus. "They've shrunk."

"Shrunk?" said Danielle, staring at Aster then to the ground. "Where?"

"Oh, no!" said King, shocked. "What have I done?"

"Wow," said Luz, coming back holding some rotten candy. "I guess they really wanted to ride those bumper carcasses."

"Actually, Luz," said King, staring at Luz. "There's something I gotta tell you."

"Yes, you do," said Danielle, staring at King with her hands on her hips.

"No. There's something I gotta tell you, King," said Luz, before bending down. "I said I'd help you win those friendship bracelets. So, win them we shall, okay?"

"What? Luz…" said Danielle, staring at Luz. "Willow and Gus…"

"Uh..." said King, before whispering to himself. "Willow and Gus will be okay for a little while, right?"

"I found them," said Aster, staring at Willow and Gus as they look around.

"Good," said Danielle, not wanting to take a step in case they were too near her.

"What was that?" asked Luz, staring at King.

"Nothing," replied King, grabbing Luz's hand and walking away. "Now let's go!"

"Ready or not, here we crumb," said Luz, walking down the street.

"Luz, wait a minute," said Danielle, seeing Aster land on the ground. "Grrr, King is in so much trouble."

"Right here," said Aster, pointing to a certain spot.

"Okay," said Danielle, bending down slowly before kneeling on the ground. "Careful, careful."

"First, I'm growing out of my clothes. Now I'm shrinking?" said Gus, watching Luz walk away with King. "Dang, puberty. You're the craziest coaster of 'em all. What happened to us? Did I blackout on the molar coaster again?"

"Sketchy carnival rides are not to blame this time," said Willow, staring at Gus. "King had something in his pouch that made us small."

"And I just got tall enough for the rides!" said Gus, sobbing.

"Shoo fly," said Danielle, shooing a fly away and scooping up Willow and Gus carefully. "You guys okay?"

"Quick!" said Willow, staring at Danielle. "We have to find Luz and get her attention."

"On it," said Danielle, procuring a bag with strings from her pocket and hanging it around her neck for Willow and Gus to ride in. "Comfy?"

"Yes," replied Gus, pointing in the direction Luz and King went. "Follow that Luz."

Meanwhile, during that whole course with the girls, King, Aster, Willow and Gus, Eda was selling stuff from the stand.

"Round as the moon, her ears are, with mood swings as terrifying as night itself. Now," said Eda, spinning a fidget spinner. "Who wants to touch an outdated human reference?"

"I do," said Citizen #1, holding up some snails.

"Me," said Citizen #2, holding snails up as well.

"Okay, show's over," said a Clown Guard, startling the customers and Eda. "This witch doesn't have a license."

"Ah, what are you?" said Eda, seeing the customers run away before leaning on the counter. "The fun police?"

"Yes!" replied the Clown Guard, squeaking his badge. "And you're coming with me."

"Uh, excuse me, sir. I'd like to have a word with your staff," said Eda, pointing her staff at the Clown Guard only to not see Owlbert on it. "Owlbert! Owlbert! Where are you?"

"Aaaaaaw… ah, no… not the time," said Danielle, running by before seeing Owlbert being cute playing whack a giraffe before running and trying to find Luz and King.

"Owlbert, you're lucky I can't be mad at your adorable antics," said Eda, climbing over the stand and trying to run only to fall into a rotten candy machine.

"Hey, I caught her," said the Rotten Candy Vendor, staring as Eda was lifted into the air.

"I hate carnivals," said Eda, her hair covered in rotten candy.

As King leads Luz through the carnival, they stop at the prize booth and see the friendship bracelets are still there. King drags Luz onward. Danielle catching up takes a breather at the prize booth before seeing Luz and King walking to a different area. Luz and King end up at the skee-ball and fail before Luz tickles the machines, which lets King successfully throw the ball in. Tickets spew out of the machine/monster as the two cheer. Danielle continues to run after Luz and King only to see the rotten candy vendor and pays for a little and gives some to Aster, Willow, and Gus. At the ring toss, one of the bottles hops out of the way of Luz's ring. The attendant shrugs. King shoves a ring over the attendant's body. The attendant reluctantly hands them tickets.

"Danielle is getting exhausted," thought Aster, seeing Danielle breathing heavy after leaning against a booth.

"I swear…" said Danielle, trying to catch her breath. "The universe is against me right now, oooh."

"Danielle, over there," said Willow, pointing to a house of mirrors attraction. "I have a plan. We'll need the rest of the rotten candy as well."

"Okay… oooh," said Danielle, sliding down to the ground, Aster pawing her hair.

"Don't worry," said Willow, getting Gus to help her. "Leave the rest to me and Gus."

Back with Eda, she was bound with magic. Sitting in a tent with the Clown Guard in front of her, Eda glares at him.

"Just when I thought I couldn't respect the law any less..." said Eda, shoes squeak as they're put on the desk. "It surprises me."

"So, I hear you're running scams at my carnival? That's my job. And I take my job very seriously," said the Carnival Boss, glaring at Eda while his tie spins.

"Spare me the yuks," said Eda, looking at the Carnival Boss. "What do you want?"

"Since I'm a forgiving demon, I'll give you two options," said the Carnival Boss, gesturing to her wanted poster than a dress on a mannequin and a cart of caramel crab apples. "I can pass you along to the Emperor's Coven, who'll throw you in the Conformatorium, or you can scam for me."

Meanwhile, Luz and King acquired a bunch of tickets and headed back to the prize stand. Handing over the tickets, the vendor starts counting the tickets.

"Now, King, before you spend your tickets are you sure you want those friendship bracelets and not this bad boy?" asked Luz, pointing to a cursed skull, who's eyes glow.

"I am the King of Night," said the Cursed Skull, roaring. "And every breath you take brings you closer to darkness."

"This guy's a riot," said Luz, smiling.

"Yes, Luz. I want the bracelets," said King, before staring at Luz. "It's kind of important to me, okay?"

"I can be important to you," said the Cursed Skull, back to talking. "I, who have seen the birth and death of countless nations…"

"Hey, stop it," said the Prize Vendor, smacking the cursed skull with a broom. "No, no. Stop it. Yes, where was I, uh... Well, lost count. Okay, one, two, three, four, five, six..."

"Ugh, gross. I'm gonna need a mirror," said Luz, some rotten candy falling on her head by magic from Aster. "I'll be right back, King."

"Count faster," said King, seeing Luz leave and staring at the prize vendor.

Meanwhile at the house of mirrors, Willow and Gus wait in a certain area. As for Aster and Danielle, they get separated from each other while trying to navigate the place. Danielle hears arguing and follows it to the source.

"No, wait I-I-I gotta explain," said King, turning away from Luz.

"There's nothing to explain," said Luz, trying to take the bottle from King.

"I was just trying to..." said King, trying to get the bottle back.

"Shrink my friends?" said Luz, a little angry.

"I was just trying to solve my problems," said King, the bottle falling out of his hands.

"Enough," shouted Danielle, running over and getting splashed with the liquid alongside Luz and King. "Oh no."

"Hi," said Willow, walking over as the three shrink.

"Wait, I can fix it. Obvioso showed me how. Behold," said King, tapping his cheek. "Why isn't this working?"

"I'd say it's working quite well," said Tibbles, walking over and grabbing the girls, King, Willow and Gus before leaving the house of mirrors.

"No, Danielle," said Aster, spotting Tibbles carrying a shrunken Danielle and the others away before giving chase. "Give Danielle back, you big bully!"

"Um, Luz, I think King is broken," said Gus, seeing King still tapping his cheeks.

"Tapping my cheeks is supposed to turn us normal," said King, no longer tapping his cheeks. "The psychic told me."

"Possibility that it only works for whichever psychic gave it to you," said Danielle, staring at King.

"Oh, did he? But, what if he... lied to you from the start?" said Tibbles, summoning the hat and fake mustache and putting it on. "Hold on. Lied to you from the start? It's different."

"You fiend. When Obvioso finds out you stole his mustache..." said King, before realizing Tibbles and Obvioso were the same person. "Oh..."

"The potion was designed by me," said Tibbles, glaring at the teens and King. "Guess whose cheeks control it?"

"Perché?" asked Danielle, staring at Tibbles.

"Why are you doing this?" asked Luz, glaring at Tibbles.

"When you destroyed my stand, you destroyed generations of Grimm Hammer history," said Tibbles, taking off the mustache and heading inside a certain tent. "Now it's time to pay."

"Where are we?" asked Danielle, Tibbles tossing them into something before big lights shined their way, showing that they were in the terrarium. "Nevermind."

"Welcome to the greatest show on the Boiling Isles!" shouted Tibbles, getting the crowd to cheer before ringing a bell. "Will these witches and demon survive feeding time? Let's find out!"

"Uh-oh," thought Danielle, seeing a manticore, griffon and a unicorn come out of the tent.

"Danielle!" shouted Aster, seeing Danielle in the terrarium.

"Aw. At least he's still my friend," said Luz, only for the unicorn to get angry. "That's how friends react."

"No, they don't," said Danielle, seeing more unicorns come out. "I have a feeling this is going to be like my first beast keeping class."

"You ruined my livelihood. So now, you'll feed my livelihood," said Tibbles, twirling his finger, a spotlight goes on and some curtains are drawn revealing a big screen that the spotlight magnified the inside of the cage on. "Place your bets and enjoy the show!"

"What?" shouted Aster, seeing the creatures approach the teens before spotting Eda. "Eda!"

"Well, if I have to go, at least I'm with my best friends," said Gus, before crossing his arms over his chest. "And King."

"Whoa, no," said Danielle, dodging a unicorn as well as the others. "Bad unicorn."

"Caramel Crab Apples," said Eda, wearing the dress from the second option and selling apples in Tibbles tent. "Get 'em hot and pinchy."

"Eda," shouted Aster, floating over to Eda. "We've got a problem."

"Not now Aster," said Eda, trying to shoo Aster away before wincing when a crab apple pinched her and going over to a customer. "Hold your spider-horses."

"But Eda…" said Aster, landing on Eda's head and pulling her hair, getting Eda to stare in the direction of the stage.

"Wait," said Eda, spotting the girls, King, Willow and Gus on screen, then looking at the terrarium. "Those are my kids!"

Gus ends up conjuring an illusion of a vacuum causing the animals to cower. Not liking what she was seeing, Danielle slowly goes over to one of the unicorns. Willow summons vines to tip over a water holder. The manticore steps through the illusionary vacuum. The four take cover behind the water holder seconds before the manticore runs into it.

"There there, it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you," said Danielle, slowly approaching a unicorn and slowly showing the palm of her hand, the unicorn sniffs her hand before leaning its head into Danielle's palm, eliciting a pleased neigh and earning some gentle strokes in its dark pink mane. "We're all in the same boat of being shrunken down for amusement. Hey, stop that tickles."

"We've gotta…" said Luz, the other animals banging against the water tank. "Find a way out of here!"

"Ah, King, you idiot. This is all your fault," said King, talking to himself and pulling the friendship bracelets out. "But I think I know how to fix it."

"Wait…" said Willow, no longer feeling any more banging before looking around the water tank, everyone surprised to see every animal in the terrarium crowding around Danielle. "Whoa."

"Guys, it's okay now," said Danielle, giggling from the affection the animals were giving her.

"Willow, Gus, I'm sorry for poofing you. And Luz, I'm sorry for taking away your friends," said King, walking out from behind the water tank and staring at Luz, Willow and Gus. "I know you'll eventually go home and now you're spending more time at school. I just... wanna be around you!"

As that was going on, Eda and Aster approach Tibbles who was laying down in a pile of snails. Lifting a snail off his eye, Tibbles sees an angry Eda and a pissed off Aster, his tail puffy and half his eyes scarlet while growling menacing. King was able to fling the friendship bracelets towards Tibbles cheek and got the reaction he wanted, Tibbles tapping his cheeks.

"Oh, no," said Tibbles, realizing what he done.

The effects of the liquid are undone, the teens are back to normal size and so are the animals. Danielle winces in pain, a headache forming before her hazel eyes go white with wisps forming in the corners, glowing cracks appear on her forehead.

"You shrunk the animals too?" said Luz, staring at Tibbles.

"It's the Tent of Tiny Terrors. Something needed to be tiny," said Tibbles, before a shadow looms over him, Danielle staring down at him.

"And to think this child wanted to fix your stand," said Danielle/Young Lady, making Tibbles squeal in fright, his skin going white before passing out.

"Whoa, Danielle, are you alright?" asked Eda, seeing Danielle regain herself.

"I-I-I don't know," replied Danielle, before passing out, Eda grabbing her.

"Danielle," said Aster, staring down at Danielle from Eda's shoulder and pawing strands of hair away from her face.

"Hey, girls," said Eda, tossing the crab apples to the animals. "This one's on the house."

"What's going on with Danielle?" asked Gus, staring at Eda and Danielle. "Why does that happen?"

"I don't know," replied Eda, before picking Danielle up. "But whatever it is, it puts a strain on her. Let's get her back to the house."

"Here," said Luz, holding the broke pieces of the friendship bracelet. "It was all that was left."

"It's... it's okay. Because now there's a piece for everybody," said King, handing pieces to Willow and Gus. "If you'll accept it, that is?"

"Thank you, King," said Willow, holding the broken piece King gave her.

"Yeah," said Gus, holding his broken piece. "I've always wanted to own a jagged piece of cheap metal."

"I have one for you as well Aster," said King, holding two other pieces. "And Danielle as well."

"Thanks King," said Aster, holding the broken piece on his tail.

"That's sweet," said Luz, picking King up.

"I'm sorry, Luz," said King, staring at Luz. "Demons do crazy things when they've been missing somebody."

"And can I tell you a secret?" said Luz, whispering to King. "I've been missing you too."

Calling it a day, everyone leaves the carnival. Eda, Luz, King, and Aster bid goodbye to Willow and Gus when they part ways. After getting back to the owl house, everyone sees Hooty talking to a fly.

"Boy, fly, we sure get into some wacky hijinks, don't we? Sure, feel sorry for anyone that missed seeing us two rabble-rousers getting into scrapes," said Hooty, not realizing everyone ducking out with uneasy faces and closing the door. "Good thing I brought a camera. Yep. Hooty and fly. Together forever. You and me. Every single day… Now I know what friendship taste like. Yum. Taste like a bug."

(Later that night)

After regaining consciousness from passing out at the carnival, Danielle grabs some spools of strings and starts crafting something. Aster comes in moments later, checking on Danielle.

"You're awake," said Aster, floating over to Danielle and seeing her make something. "What are you making?"

"A friendship bracelet," replied Danielle, threading another string into place. "Some of my cousins and big sister taught me."

"I didn't know you could make friendship bracelets," said Aster, staring at Danielle's work.

"I remember you not getting one while at the carnival," said Danielle, staring at Aster. "So, I though, I'd make you one. There's a little folklore about friendship bracelets that I looked up one time."

"What is it?" asked Aster, swishing his tail.

"According to the folklore one ties a bracelet onto the wrist of a friend as a symbol of friendship and may wish for something at that moment," said Danielle, looking at Aster. "The bracelet should be worn until it is totally worn out and falls off by itself to honor the hard work and love put into making it. The moment at which the band falls off on its own, the wish is supposed to come true."

"I like it," said Aster, before looking at his paws. "I want to make one too but I don't think I can with paws."

"Well, I have tons of embroidery thread," said Danielle, looking at her bag then Aster. "When you're free, I'll take them out and you can choose which colors you want to use. I can also show you the various styles I know."

"I look forward to it," said Aster, smiling at Danielle and her smiling back as well.

(Set after Ch. 26)

Various animals at the school were before the beast keeping class. Danielle and Viney shared the same class at the time. Seeing various creatures from griffins, manticores, unicorns and some other select creatures, Danielle marvels at the sight of them. Though upon being seen, all the animals went straight at Danielle, making the girl fall down in a pile of fur and feathers, laughing as the animals were nuzzling her or giving her kisses. It lasted for quite a while, Aster having to wiggle out from the center and looking at the display before laughing as well.

"Wow, I can't believe this," said Viney, seeing even Puddles joining in. "Hold on, let me help wrangle them up."

"D-D-D-Danielle," said Aster, floating back down onto Danielle's shoulder and pointing behind them. "Spi-spi-spi…"

"Hmm… ah, no," said Danielle, backing up into Viney when noticing a cow like spider behind them. "Ragno… ragno… oooh, no."

"Oh, wow. Can't believe you got this heifer interested. She's a tough nut to crack," said Viney, before seeing Danielle hide behind her. "Are you okay?"

"I may be an animal lover but there are some out there that creep me out. I'm so sorry," said Danielle, staring at the cows like spider before feeling trembling in her hood. "Aster, are you okay?"

"I don't like spiders, I really don't," said Aster, peeking out, his ears flattened in fear. "No no… Nova…"

"Oh, Aster," said Danielle, rubbing the top of Aster's head before getting a better look at the cow like spider. "Wait… why does it look like a cow somewhat?"

"Oh, that's how the species is. They're also our main source of smilk," said Viney, before seeing Danielle go pale. "Danielle?"

"I've been drinking milk from a spider… milk from a spider," said Danielle, before seeing Luz in a nearby window duck down. "Luz knew."

"This is why I don't drink the milk here," said Aster, curling up in Danielle's hood, trembling. "I want the milk from home. Or at least from one of the earths out there."

(Set after Ch. 26)

Various instruments are arranged in the bard homeroom. Looking at wind instruments to string instruments, Danielle marvels at the sight before her. Sitting down, Danielle wonders if there is a musical instrument in her backpack. Fishing around, Danielle pulls out a glass flute.

"Wow, that's a pretty flute," said a Female Bard Student, walking over to Danielle. "Do you know any songs?"

"Ciao Skara," said Danielle, staring at Skara and fiddling with the glass flute. "I've never played a flute before."

Skara is a young female witch, the same age as Danielle. She has dark brown skin tone, gray eyes, pointy ears, and hair that comes in tones of pinkish-gray and deep mauve held up in a ponytail. Was wearing the bard track uniform and had a pair of gold studded earrings and had her hair pulled up in a ponytail with a red band.

"Won't know till you try," said Skara, leaning towards Danielle.

"Okay then, here goes," said Danielle, nervous before blowing into the mouth piece, a white spark appearing in the center of her pupils.

Everyone in the class looks Danielle way as the melody envelops the room. Aster ears twitch and he peers at the flute then Danielle curiously. It didn't take long for the melody to leave the room and slowly cover the whole island. Dark is twitching in agony at the emperor's castle. Even Belos himself is feeling it.

"If this is Lady Light's way of purging Dark from my body, then so be it," said Belos, leaning against a table. "I'll endure the pain."

Dark on the other hand, was having none of that. Entering the plane that basically only he and Light travel, Dark glares at Danielle as she continues playing.

"That's quite enough from you!" shouted Dark, scaring Danielle back to awareness.

Danielle is terrified, dropping the glass flute, and cowering in a corner of the classroom. Everyone wonders what happened. The Bard Teacher bends down and checks on Danielle.

"I thought as much," said the Bard Teacher, seeing the white spark in Danielle's eyes. "This girl may be better suited for the oracle track."

As the school day goes on, Danielle is eating her lunch outside. No one she knew during this time period had lunch at the same time as her. Deeply sighing, Danielle takes a bite of her egg salad sandwich. Aster is sitting next to her, wondering what's on Danielle's mind.

"Hello there," said a Middle-Aged Man, a fair distance from Danielle. "May I presume that lovely melody from earlier was from you?"

"Um… yes," replied Danielle, hesitantly nervous.

"Let me introduce myself," said the Middle-Aged Man, placing a hand over his heart. "My name is Raine Whispers. A member of the bard coven."

Raine was somewhere around mid to late forties, much like Eda. Has medium brown skin and short mint-green hair with white streaks near the bottom. They have darker mint green eyebrows, green eyes, and pointy ears. Wears a long, black tunic with a maroon collar and quarter length white sleeves, gold trim, three gold buttons, a brown belt, crimson pants and black, knee-high boots. Also had a gray earring on his right ear and wore large round glasses.

"I'd love to train you in the bardic arts whenever I'm available," said Raine, smiling and staring at Danielle.

"Um… let me think about it," said Danielle, nervously looking at Raine.

"Take all the time you need," said Raine, turning around and waving bye to Danielle. "Have a nice day."

"Yeah…" said Danielle, waving back slowly. "Have a nice day."
