SCENE 4
EXT. TOWN OF ENCANTO - LATE AFTERNOON
Alonso and Mirabel awkwardly returned to town, unable to figure out what to say.
MIRABEL
Thanks for opening to me. The memory must be painful, but it was brave of you to do so.
ALONSO
Thank you for listening. It was the first time I said that story. I am glad you were the first person to hear it.
Just as Mirabel and Alonso relaxed, Mirabel spotted one of the villagers acting strangely familiar.
MIRABEL
Wait here. I need to take care of something.
Mirabel headed towards the villager talking to a shopkeeper. With her back turned, something swept Alonso's feet and dragged him away.
MIRABEL
So, do you mind explaining what that was all about?
SUSPICIOUS VILLAGER
Oh, Mirabel. I did not see you there. How are you today?
MIRABEL
Cut the charade, Camilo. I know it is you.
SUSPICIOUS VILLAGER
Camilo? I saw him head to Abuela Alma's place. You should head back, too.
MIRABEL
Funny, the townspeople usually refer to Abuela as Madam Alma, cousin.
Giving up, the villager transformed back into Camilo.
CAMILO
Okay, you got me, but I bet Abuela is waiting for all of us to go back right now, so let us get going.
MIRABEL
Not until you tell me why you tricked the kids to get me away from Alonso.
CAMILO
What? Would I really do something like that?
MIRABEL
The kids told me you told them.
CAMILO
Those little tattle-tailers. Okay, fine. The family wanted someone to watch over you, so they involuntarily chose Dolores and me
.
DOLORES
(walking towards the two of them) I heard that.
MIRABEL
(to Dolores) You too?
DOLORES
(to Camilo) Didn't I tell you not to let Mirabel catch you?
CAMILO
(to Dolores) How was I supposed to know the kids would rat me out?
MIRABEL
Hold on, what do you mean by "watch over me?" I can take care of myself.
DOLORES
Yes, but we are dealing with someone who makes Abuela faint just from seeing him. Don't you think that makes him dangerous?
MIRABEL
No, that is making assumptions. He is not that kind of person.
CAMILO
Really? And how would you know that?
MIRABEL
Because... because I just do, okay. I have spent time with him, so I know what he is like.
CAMILO
In other words, you like him.
MIRABEL/DOLORES
(surprised) What?!
MIRABEL
No, that is not what I said.
CAMILO
Please, even the kids noticed it, and they can be brutally honest.
DOLORES
Mirabel, is that true? Do you have feelings for him?
MIRABEL
I... I do not know. I mean, he just got here. Love does not work like that. You must go out on dates, hang out often, know each other more - you know - mushy stuff.
DOLORES
Mirabel, I know that look. However, I do not know if it will work because, as you said, we barely know anything about him.
MIRABEL
(pondering for a moment) Then, what about dinner?
CAMILO
And give Abuela another panic attack? (sarcastically) Great idea.
MIRABEL
Still, what better way to understand each other than at a dinner table? Remember when Mariano came over to eat with us?
CAMILO
Yeah, and Dolores opened her mouth, causing a total disaster.
DOLORES
In hindsight, I should not have acted irrationally. Forgive me, Mirabel.
MIRABEL
It is fine. You wanted to protect the family. I get it. But let us not do anything similar at this dinner invite, okay?
CAMILO
So, where is the guest of honor?
MIRABEL
He is right...
Mirabel turned around, but Alonso was not there.
MIRABEL
That is odd. I thought he was behind me. Did you see him, Camilo?
CAMILO
To be honest, I was not paying attention.
DOLORES
I am certain he is extremely far away right now.
MIRABEL
What makes you say that?
DOLORES
Because the last thing I heard from him was a scream that kept fading away.
MIRABEL
Well, which way did he go?
SCENE 5
EXT. TOWN OF ENCANTO - LATE AFTERNOON - SAME DAY
Meanwhile, Alonso continued to scream as the vines dragged him around town. He knocked over various objects as the villagers questioned what they saw.
EXT. OUTSIDE CASA MADRIGAL
The vines brought him to Casa Madrigal. Obeying Abuela Alma's orders, Casita tried to stop Alonso from entering the house by shutting the doors, but the vines on Alonso's feet were too fast. It slipped Alonso through the door just as Casita closed it on him.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - FOYER
As Alonso sped through the foyer, Casita did everything it could to stop him from entering further; however, the vines continued to meander their way through. Soon, Alonso rolled up the stairs and through Isabella's door, which closed as soon as Alonso entered.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - ISABELA'S ROOM
Alonso's scream of fear turned into confusion as he stopped sliding on concrete and hard tiles. He sailed through a sea of flowers and ascended a giant beanstalk. He landed inside a floating gazebo filled with various flower ornaments. The vines gently sat him down on the table. Still traumatized, Alonso looked around, hoping for an explanation. Soon, Isabela came down from her flower vine swing and gracefully entered the gazebo.
ISABELA
(flirting) Hey there.
ALONSO
(rattled) Um, hi. Isabela, was it?
ISABELA
Oh, please, you can call me Isa. That is what all my friends call me.
ALONSO
Sure, but I...
ISABELA
Oh, I almost forgot.
With a clap of her hands, Isabela brought down vines that carried an assortment of items, such as a three-tier dessert stand, a teapot, a teacup, and a saucer. As the vines set the table, one grabbed the teapot and poured tea for Alonso. Confusion clouded his mind as unusually colored tea flowed into his cup. It still looked like water, for the leaves never fully opened to release their flavor. Alonso looked at the dessert tray. He believed they were wafers and fritters, but the color and texture were concerning.
ALONSO
Thank you... for your generosity. (looking at the tray) Those are...?
ISABELA
Oh, these are obleas. They are thin wafers filled with jams. And those are buñuelos. They are deep-fried cheese fritters. I hope they are to your liking.
Alonso looked at the lukewarm tea and crumbling desserts and looked at Isabela. She was eagerly waiting for him to eat. Taking a deep breath, he drank the tea. After a split-second pause, he forcefully swallowed the tea.
ALONSO
This tea is... different. It is nothing like I have ever tasted before.
ISABELA
I grew them myself. I believe using a variety of blends gives the tea a nice punch.
ALONSO
It certainly... hits the spot.
Alonso hesitantly grabbed a pair of tongs to pick up a fritter. He had trouble cutting it with his knife because of the high oil concentration. Eventually, Alonso was able to cut and eat half of it. All he could taste was the oil and the uneven chunks of cheese.
ALONSO
It is quite a... unique taste.
ISABELA
I made them myself. I am proud of how they came out.
Instantaneously, Isabela brought herself and her chair next to Alonso.
ISABELA
So, tell me, what is it like out here? I have never been beyond the mountains, so tell me the things you have seen while traveling.
ALONSO
Well, they are not so different from this place. There are small shops, cafes, and plazas. The main difference is the people.
ISABELA
Like women?
ALONSO
No, there are men and children in those towns, too. They all have unique customs and cultures, which makes learning about them interesting.
ISABELA
Fascinating. What is it like to travel alone? Do you ever get lonely?
ALONSO
Although there are advantages and disadvantages to solo travel, I have become accustomed to it.
ISABELA
Have you considered going with a traveling companion with all the qualities of a perfect journeyman?
ALONSO
What are you...
Suddenly, they heard a door knock.
MIRABEL (V.O.)
Isa? Isa, are you there?
ALONSO
(turning to the door) Is that Mirabel?
ISABELA
Do not worry. It is probably nothing.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - SECOND FLOOR BALCONY
MIRABEL
Isa, I am coming in.
Before Mirabel entered, Isabela created a large tree behind the door, preventing Mirabel from coming inside.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - ISABELA'S ROOM
ALONSO
Is it okay to block her like that?
ISABELA
She will understand the message eventually.
MIRABEL (V.O.)
Isa, I know Alonso's in there. Dolores told me she heard him screaming all the way to your room.
Unwillingly, Isabela brought the tree down, allowing Mirabel to enter. Mirabel looked around the room until she spotted the floating gazebo above her. Eyeing the giant beanstalk swirling toward the gazebo, she quickly ascended it.
ALONSO
Couldn't you grab her with your vines and bring her here?
ISABELA
She has done this a thousand times. She is fine.
Mirabel, who was clearly struggling, eventually made her way up the beanstalk and to the gazebo.
MIRABEL
Isa, what were you thinking, dragging him around again like that? What if he has the wrong image of us?
ALONSO
(to Mirabel) It might be too late to fix that.
ISABELA
I was just trying to get him comfortable until you showed up.
ALONSO
(to Mirabel) To be honest, I am thankful you arrived.
Mirabel looked at the center table and saw the dessert tray and tea.
MIRABEL
(eyeing the table) What's all this?
ISABELA
Tea and sweets, obviously. Although, I assumed that someone as unrefined as you would not understand.
MIRABEL
Did mom make them?
ISABELA
No, I did. I am a talented chef, you know?
MIRABEL
You? Bake? No offense, but I never saw you touch a spatula. Or a frying pan. Or a deep fryer.
ISABELA
Sometimes, talent comes from within.
Mirabel grabbed a fritter and popped one into her mouth. Immediately, she poured tea into a spare teacup and drank it, but it worsened the taste. Mirabel forcefully swallowed it all down.
MIRABEL
(coughing) I-Isa, have you tasted what you made?
ISABELA
No, of course not. That would be bad manners. Even I know that. And who said you had permission to eat what I made?
Mirabel opened the teapot and looked inside.
MIRABEL
Isa, did you use warm water? The tea leaves are not opening properly to release all their flavor. You used too many varieties with clashing tastes. In addition, your fritters are overcooked and soggy. I could barely chew through the large chunks of cheese.
ISABELA
How rude! I will let you know...
Isabela tried to pick up a fritter for herself, but just the mere touch of it gave shivers down her spine. When she retracted her hand, the fritter slipped out of the tray and rolled out of the gazebo.
ISABELA
Okay, but I doubt you can do any better.
MIRABEL
That sounds like a challenge, which I accept. I was thinking about making dinner anyway. Are you coming, Alonso?
ALONSO
Sure, I will help.
ISABELA
Hey, I am still talking to him.
ALONSO
Thank you for your generosity, but I truly need to get going. It was wonderful talking to you.
Before Isabela could say any further, Mirabel and Alonso headed to the exit, with Isabela looking crossed.
SCENE 6
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - SECOND FLOOR BALCONY
Mirabel and Alonso left Isabela's room while feeling relieved.
MIRABEL
Sorry about Isa. She can be a handful, but she means well.
ALONSO
I understand. I needed a polite way to turn her town, and you supplied me with an opportunity.
MIRABEL
Oh, well, glad I can be of help.
The two awkwardly tried to find ways to talk to each other.
ALONSO
Did you say something about cooking?
MIRABEL
Oh, yes, come with me.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - KITCHEN
Mirabel brought Alonso to the kitchen. No one was inside.
MIRABEL
My mom told me the best way to know someone is through food. So, we will use tonight's dinner as an opportunity for others to get to know you better.
ALONSO
Are you sure I should help? I mean, the house ejected me yesterday.
MIRABEL
I am sure it was a misunderstanding. Once my family knows how kind and honest you are, they will warm up to you.
ALONSO
Do you think I am kind and honest?
MIRABEL
(flustered) Well, I mean, I, uh, hey, quick question. Do you know how to cook?
ALONSO
Yes, but it is mostly for me. I have never cooked for a family before, certainly not as large as yours.
MIRABEL
Do not worry about it. You use the same amount of work and time but increase your portions. What can you make?
ALONSO
I mostly cook paella.
MIRABEL
Paella? What is it?
ALONSO
It is a pan-fried rice dish with ingredients such as seafood and chicken.
MIRABEL
That sounds good. We have not had rice in a while, so that will work.
ALONSO
What are you going to make?
MIRABEL
Well, if paella is our main dish, I might want to compliment it with something lighter, like soup and a salad. Oh, and I should make desserts, too. I know people in my family who like to eat things in reverse order.
ALONSO
Are you sure we should make my recipe the main dish? What if your folks do not like it?
MIRABEL
I know my family's taste, so I can give you pointers for things they do not like. In the worst-case scenario, I can create another main that does not involve rice. That way, we will have a variety of dishes on the table.
Mirabel noticed Alonso's concerned look and held his shoulders.
MIRABEL
Hey, do not be nervous. It is going to be okay. My family is going to like you. I promise.
Alonso eased his tension and held Mirabel's hand.
ALONSO
Thank you.
Realizing what they were doing, they quickly stepped back to recompose themselves, trying to hide their pounding heartbeat.
MIRABEL
(flushed) U-Um, I will grab the ingredients in the refrigerator. Can you get the rice and flour?
ALONSO
(blushing) Y-Yeah, sure, no problem. Where is it?
MIRABEL
It is in the pantry over there.
Mirabel helped Alonso grow accustomed to the kitchen. Occasionally, they helped each other when they had trouble with something. As they were cooking, Julieta walked into the kitchen. At first, she was surprised that Mirabel and the boy she brought home with her yesterday were cooking. Immediately, Julieta wanted to say something. But, when she realized they had not noticed her and were in their own little world, Julieta could not help but remember a remarkably similar thing happening to her during her youth.
EXT. TOWN OF ENCANTO - DAY - PAST
It was another day in Encanto. A young Julieta in her twenties, who looked like an older Mirabel, set up shop in the town center, waiting for people to come to her for treatments or remedies. Whenever she spotted someone who appeared hurt, she would quickly offer them a sweet snack, which they humbly took to get better.
One day, a young Agustín in his twenties teetered his way toward Julieta's stand. He had multiple injuries in various parts of his body. The villagers wondered how he walked to the town center without screaming in pain with each step. Even the sight of him made them wince in pain. Eventually, he collapsed back first in front of Julieta's stand.

Julieta, who was tending another person, noticed someone had fallen by her stand. When she walked up to him, she thought his wounds were frightening. yet comical, for she had never seen anyone so poorly injured. When she fed him one of her dishes, his injuries partially healed. Confused, Julieta continued to stuff his face until all his injuries disappeared.
Finally, Agustín regained consciousness. The first thing he saw was a beautiful and concerned angel carrying a plate of food. When he sat up to face her, his jaw dropped, almost spilling the food he was unconsciously chewing. Embarrassed, he smiled awkwardly and ran but tripped on his shoelace and fell on his face, breaking his nose. Julieta thought his reactions were funny and offered another small treat for his nose. Once he improved, he got up and shyly walked away.

Every day after that, Agustín would visit Julieta at her stand with a new injury. She tried various dishes on him until she found a combination that worked. Throughout these short encounters, love blossomed between them.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - KITCHEN - EVENING - PRESENT
As Julieta reminisced about the past, Agustín walked up behind her, wondering what was happening. When Agustín saw what she saw, he was about to shout, but Julieta quickly silenced him by putting her finger on her lips. Confused, Agustín turned to Julieta.
JULIETA
(to Agustín, whispering) Look at them. Who do they remind you of?
Agustín took a moment to see Mirabel and Alonso to understand what Julieta meant.
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - VARIOUS INTERIORS - EARLY MORNING – PAST
A young Agustín wanted to help Julieta with the healing meals she had provided him with daily. One day, Agustín headed to Casa Madrigal. Abuela Alma, in her forties, opened the door first and was not impressed by him due to the stories she had heard about his clumsiness. A young Julieta appeared behind her and welcomed Agustín into the house, despite Alma's crossed face.
In the kitchen, Julieta showed Agustín the various recipes she created based on his injuries. Agustín tried his best to follow the notes she had written. Occasionally, he would hurt himself. Julieta popped a quick snack in his mouth to heal his injury. Although they made a mess in the kitchen, they happily enjoyed their time together.

The images jump back and forth between the present Mirabel and Alonso with the past Julieta and Agustín. Whenever there was a moment Mirabel did something like a young Julieta, the screen would fade to moments in the past. In conjunction, whenever Alonso did something like a young Agustín, the screen would fade to moments in the present.

INT. CASA MADRIGAL - KITCHEN – PAST
One day, Agustín acted more nervous than usual in the kitchen. Julieta stopped cooking and asked what was wrong. Taking a deep breath and mustering courage, Agustín dropped to one knee and presented her with a ring, which she quickly accepted. The two kissed, happy that their feelings bore fruit. The two hugged and stared at the kitchen in front of them.

INT. CASA MADRIGAL - KITCHEN – PRESENT
Julieta and Agustín stood by the kitchen door, watching Mirabel and Alonso cook.
AGUSTÍN
(hugging Julieta from the side) They're just like us.
JULIETA
(smiling) They are, aren't they?
The two shared a quiet but enthusiastic moment.
JULIETA
Maybe we were acting too harsh on them.
AGUSTÍN
Perhaps. But Mirabel is our daughter. No matter who she has her eyes on, it will be sad to see her go... Woah!
Agustín leaned on the door but lost his balance. He slipped and fell on the floor, causing Mirabel and Alonso to turn around.
MIRABEL
(surprised) Mom?! Dad?!
JULIETA
(awkwardly) H-Hey.
ALONSO
(frozen) Oh no.
MIRABEL
Mom, Dad, I can explain everything.
JULIETA
(calming Mirabel) It is okay. Do not worry. Do you need help in the kitchen?
MIRABEL
(confused) Wait, so you are not angry?
JULIETA
I can use a break from cooking occasionally. However, the kitchen is still my domain. If you need anything, let me know.
MIRABEL
(hugging Julieta) Thanks, Mom. I love you.
JULIETA
(returning the hug) I love you too, my beautiful butterfly. (to Agustín) Honey, help the boy, would you?
AGUSTÍN
Yes, my dear.
Agustín walked over to Alonso to help him with the paella.
AGUSTÍN
(stiff) Um, hey there.
ALONSO
(nervous) G-Good evening, Señor Madrigal.
The two of them remained awkward with each other for a while.
AGUSTÍN
Listen, Mirabel is a good kid, so if anything happens to her...
ALONSO
(confidently) I will not let anything happen to Mirabel. I promise.
AGUSTÍN
(smiling) Good answer.
Mirabel, Alonso, Julieta, and Agustín continued to work inside the kitchen together. For a moment, they bonded as a family.
