S2 E1 AU See No Evil
AU stories for NCIS episodes. Each is independent from all the others since this is based on the possibility of parallel universes and multiple timelines…. many, many of them. Later on some may seem to follow something that happened in an earlier AU episode story but it's probably coincidence unless I say otherwise in the beginning. Again, these are AU scenes/stories which means a character may die in one story and be alive in the next one. And it might be a missing scene and not AU.
This is a short alternate universe story/scene for season 2, episode 1 See No Evil
The original episode aired on September 28, 2004.
The dialogue in some of this is from the episode.

"Can we get this guy or not?"
"Well, we've been following the money for the last eight hours."
"And if it transfers into a country where we have…"
"Wait, I don't believe this."
"What?"
"It's headed back here."
"Washington DC."
"So, with the court order, we get the money and then let the bank give it to the person who comes to pick it up so we can arrest them?"
"That's right. Bank opens at 10."
"What do you mean the money isn't here anymore?" The bank just opened. The person couldn't have gotten there to get the money from a closed bank.
The bank manager looked a little frightened. "It was transferred."
"Who transferred it?"
"We did."
'You did?"
"Well no, not me personally. This bank transferred it."
"When?"
"A few minutes after the original transfer arrived. As soon as the first transaction was completed, our system sent it on its way, less a fee of course."
"McGee," he said, thinking Tim should know what he wanted and he was right.
"Boss, the money went into an account and the owner of that account transferred it somewhere else. They did it electronically. Never came into the bank. It's possible they guessed that we could track it."
"How'd they do it so fast?"
"The money arrived into the account over eight hours ago." Gibbs didn't look satisfied with that answer. "Domestic transfers take less than a day. Usually within a few hours you can have access to your money. For a transfer like this, probably not much time at all. Actually picking up that much money would have taken a lot longer."
The bank manager added, "If a transfer isn't flagged for some reason, the recipient will have access to it pretty quickly and can cash out or transfer to a number of places such as other accounts or credit cards."
Gibbs wanted the money found and told the bank manager, "Get us all the information you have about that transfer and we're going to need that $50 back."
"Why is Gibbs mad? We rescued Sandy and her mom. We traced the money."
"We didn't get the kidnapper or the money and now it's not our case anymore."
"Yeah, funny how the FBI always wants in on financial crimes."
Two years later FBI Special Agent Tobias Fornell stopped by. "The bureau has shut down the investigation into the missing $2 million." When he received blank looks from DiNozzo, McGee and David, he expounded. "The Watson case. Kidnapped Mom and daughter. Husband transferred the money from the pentagon."
"Oh, I remember now. Who had the money?"
"Don't know."
"If you didn't find the money then why is the investigation closed?"
"Not closed, just shut down."
Gibbs strolled past Fornell and joined the conversation. "He means they've had the case for two years and haven't made any progress so it's time to go after someone they think they can actually catch."
"Come on, Gibbs. You couldn't have done any better."
"Maybe we should look into it."
"Boss, it's not our cold case."
"Yeah boss, we saved the girl and her mom, the FBI took over the money part of the investigation and the case was closed for us."
Gibbs agreed. "Yep, that's what we did. McGee, the FBI hasn't been able to recover the missing $1,999,950. Do we have a chance at finding it?"
Tim only took about 5 seconds to arrange his thoughts. "They would have tried to identify the owner of the original account like we did. They would have traced the second wire transfer to the financial institution and then to the paperwork at the physical location. They would have looked at security tapes to see if they could identify who picked up the cash. They would have checked all the documents for fingerprints because the person had to sign for the money. Not an electronic signature. They would have monitored all the bank accounts for every person connected to the investigation to watch for large deposits and they would have watched property records and dealerships for cash purchases." The look on Gibbs' face reminded him that he hadn't answered the question. "No, I don't think we have much of a shot."
While McGee was explaining to Gibbs, DiNozzo wondered what happened to the Watson family. "Captain Watson retired last year. Shows his retirement check is going direct deposit to a bank in San Diego."
