Chapter 1: The Fog Stirs

Story Start.

Golden light from the sun illumined a vast, ornate throne room.

It was a place that seemed to be outside reality, yet within it.

A man in white and gold, an old man, or rather, as he seemed to appear, kneeled before the throne, high above the flight of stairs that led to the throne.

"Mine Lord Father, why hast thouest summon me to thy presence?"

A figure of great magnificence from the throne bent slightly towards the old man, his face obscured by holy light, immeasurable and glorious. Then, it all faded behind the figure's head and revealed a man with a golden crown for hair and a deep ocean of blue for eyes.

"… beyond the seas, across the Fog, in the Lands Between, the Fog stirs, a new fragment of mine has awoken." His voice echoed from the throne, peaceful yet stern, and authority exuded from his mere voice.

The old man, still genuflected, turned his gaze upwards to the throne; his eyes of gold focused on his Father, and it was returned in kind.

"A fragment of yours, a Tarnished of no renown?" he asked, but his Father merely shook his head.

"What then? Another from the Village Hidden in the Leaves, awoken in a world he does not belong?"

The nod from his Father rendered a heavy sigh as if resigned already from the knowledge. Silence ensued in the room as the empty thrones that stood on either side of the central throne were filled with figures, one by one; all of them women.

"Thine Imperial Majesties," greeted the old man and bowed once more.

One of them waved him off, and the one on the immediate right side of his Father, the one with hair whiter than snow, signalled him to stand, and he did.

"… I gazed upon the Crystal Tower, and it showeth that the time for a new Lord in the Lands Between has come. That fragment of your Father, far away from home, will make a new home for himself and put the Greater Will and all those Outer Gods into their knees," stated the white-haired Empress and Queen while the old man understood right there and then, why his father, the Emperor, summoned him.

"Ah, now I understand, Thine Imperial Majesties desire me to be his shadow, not unlike my work in Chaldea, with another fragment not long ago?"

The Father nodded in acknowledgement. "The Director of Chaldea has finished his work beyond the stars, you have seen to that as his deputy, and now, our work continues ever on."

Then, another queen has spoken, this one, with hair of purple, and eyes like blood, clothed in the shadows, clear in her contrast to the light.

"You are to be the shadow of this fragment as part of the Dragonguard," she ordered, eyes now closed, red spear in one hand.

"As the Queen of Shadows, I give thee authority to use all that which belongs to the Dragonguard. Thy work begins tomorrow, at dawn, thou shalt depart for the Lands Between; by that time, that fragment of thy Father would have been immersed already in that broken world," she finished, her eyes opened again.

"By the authority of the Eternal Emperor, go and make your preparations, the Lands Between the Fog awaits."

In another world, and perhaps, another time. Eyes like the ocean opened upon a vast and quiet verdant land, and then rays of gold fell upon his eyes.

"Now, where did I end up?" muttered the man as he rubbed his eyes of dust, if there were any, as it was just muscle memory.

His sight was completely perfect, and he gazed upon the land before him, a foreign, broken land; he could feel it inside him, the land aches, the land writhes, the land cries.

Suffering everywhere, yet there is hope.

"What a broken world this is…" a voice from within his mind spoke, and he agreed in silence.

There is always hope.

"But then, what is broken, can be remade. The question remains, however, what are we doing here?" another voice asked, and the man inhaled the fresh air from around him before a reply was given.

"… Kaguya, you're awake." He stood up from the grassy hill he found himself in and scoured the surroundings as he dusted himself.

"A pull from one world to another tends to wake oneself, Naruto," she replied, perfectly calm and regal as if nothing had changed.

The man finally looked up and beheld that golden tree, a tower that pierced the skies and bathed the land with rays of gold. The sky was clear, and the sun was high, but that golden tree overpowered all; there was no competition whatsoever.

"… that is a big tree."

"Heh, at least it's not something like a Shinju," uttered another voice while the man turned his gaze away from the golden tree back to the lands before him, all while thoughts plagued his mind about many things that concerned their arrival in this world.

"I hope you're right, Matatabi," he finally replied and took a gander at himself, which is when he saw that he was perfectly normal; his clothes were his usual ones; orange and black, and a white cloak still hung around his shoulders. In short, he was left unscathed.

Once again, he scoured the area with his eyes and took note of the surrounding features, such as those ruins that seemed to have fallen from up high, as well as the winds that seemed to be howling, as evident by the way the trees nearby danced and swayed.

"I can't feel any of my markings back home… I don't think we can leave this place."

"Nor could I, for that matter," added Kaguya while he continued his observance.

In the distance, he saw a ruin that looked like it actually belonged there, something like an old temple that he could not make out the architectural style, and outside, there was a horseman clad in full armour of alloyed gold. The knight strutted about in the grass lazily, and Naruto raised an eyebrow as he focused his senses.

"… it feels like it's guarding against something or someone. Look, up and down the path, and repeat," he observed as he crouched near a boulder, eyes focused over the hillside.

"Well, feel like talking to her?" suggested another voice from inside his head, the first voice he heard when they arrived.

Naruto remained silent at first, eyes trained on the hulking mass of armour atop an equally armoured steed.

"Her? That's a woman?" With an incredulous look, Naruto focused even more on the armoured knight and found that Kurama was correct.

"… oh, that's a big girl… let's talk to her."

He stood, dusted himself, and calmly walked down the grassy terrain towards the rider down the off-beaten path; the wind was nice and cool now while the birds flew around the place, and it was a calm day.

"Hello there!"

His greeting was so cheerful that it could disarm any ordinary people; alas, there was nothing ordinary with this armoured rider.

A quick pivot with frightening grace, then a golden halberd fell towards him, intending to cut his body in one swift and heavy strike.

"Well now, that wasn't nice," said Naruto as he held the halberd's blade with ease, his right hand coated in crimson, while the rider tried to pull the halberd back.

Despite not seeing the reaction of the said rider, Naruto felt that the rider was baffled at that moment but paid it no heed.

"I just want to ask some questions; no need for such aggression," he said, yet the rider did not budge and made sure he knew what she thought of that as she let go of the halberd and pivoted, then had her shield at hand, ready for another attack.

It was just a few moments in between those movements, but for Naruto, it was so slow that he was already well out of the way when the rider pivoted, and he was ready. Thus, when the rider came upon him with her shield, his fist met it, front and centre.

A sound of crashing echoed in the nearby area; there was a whine from the horse as it rolled down the path, while the rider, now forcefully unmounted, found herself at the root of a tree with a broken arm.

Tree Sentinels are the living ramparts of the Erdtree, for they are the standard for all those who aspire to defend the Erdtree. Their halberds, forged of gold, masterfully crafted and weighted that no mere human can hope to wield it, while their great shields, same forged of gold, where roots of the Erdtree are engraved upon, to protect those who held them.

It was just a punch; she saw that in the brief moment before everything turned upside down, but no, there was something else behind that, something that rendered her immobile.

"…"

This one was tasked to defend against Tarnished that may emerge from a nearby cave, and she failed.

No Tarnished must ever become Elden Lord; it is a great offence against the Golden Order.

A disgrace to her order, as she found herself unmounted and downed, beaten by a single punch, and nary a word could she let out; only pain-filled grunts came from her mouth. Her helm hid her face, which showed agony, but she could hear footsteps coming closer.

Slightly, she turned her head up and saw the strangely dressed man approach her position, that golden halberd in his grasp, and she could not fathom how it was even possible. This was no ordinary man; even in her state, she could feel it, something strange… something…

"Nay… impossible, this is no Tarnished… who is this, that carry such grace, such divinity?... by the Erdtree, a thousand pardons, I have disgraced thee and failed in mine duty."

Words she could not utter, could never utter, found themselves at the forefront of her mind. The strange man now stood near her downed self, unable to move; her shield arm was broken, yet her great shield remained whole, unbroken yet stained.

"… kill me."

"…"

"…"

Naruto dropped the halberd, and in a thud, the axe blade found itself buried halfway in the soil by the feet of the downed rider; he could feel the emotions swirl within the mute rider.

"Could have held back a little more there, Naruto; we felt the chakra released by that punch; her insides must be in torment," chided another voice, and he grimaced as he stood silently, then he went at the side of the dismounted armoured rider, where her broken arm still held that golden shield.

"I'm not your enemy, and I apologise for this," said Naruto as he took the shield from her broken arm, all while she let out a pained noise, faint but audible, then he undid her crested helm, "… hmm."

A curtain of ebony crowned her pale and scarred visage; her golden eyes half-lidded from the pain she felt in her body.

"… you've been through a lot, I can see that; here, drink this," he continued as he took out a small tube from his pockets and helped the woman drink the medicine, from which he briefly beheld a mangled bud of flesh therein.

He held back a wince.

"… ouch, so that's why she hasn't said a word."

"Not now, Shukaku." Snickering from other voices rung within his head, but he ignored it in favour of tending to the woman.

The medicine seemed to have done wonders as she finally moved her other hand, which she used to hold her halberd, albeit slowly, as she undid the gauntlet that covered her broken arm. That was when Naruto saw the damage that he had caused, and a wince finally came from him.

"Broken bones, battered muscles…" he muttered as he did a quick examination of the injury

"You're lucky Tsunade and Sakura were patient enough to teach you medicine," said another in his head, and he sighed as he rested the broken arm on her lap to prepare it for his subsequent actions.

"I'm not that bad, am I?"

Laughter greeted his reply; even Kaguya, the ever-stoic woman, let out a giggle.

"… ugh, you lot are the worst."

Then he focused back on the woman, or rather, on her broken arm, while she silently watched, and within her, she did not understand why this man was doing this. Her body was still in pain, but not as much as it did just moments earlier, then a calm green aura covered his hand as he placed them just a tad above her left arm.

"I will not pry as to why you cannot speak," he broke the silence as he healed her arm, "But I must ask, do you have a name?"

With her good hand, she scrawled on the ground, and he read it as he healed her.

A Tree Sentinel, I was; bound by oath, a lifetime ago, nothing more.

"…"

An oath, he found himself wondering, as he needed to know more about this place that he found himself in. He would have said something else, but the woman, the Tree Sentinel, scribbled another note on the ground.

Mine duty, I failed; the Erdtree, I disgraced; a stain upon the Golden Order. Cease thy healing, and slay me.

"Oh, is that what that huge tree is called? Erdtree?"

"That's the part you're focusing on, you dumb sand idiot? This woman just wrote that she wants Naruto to kill her!" Matatabi raised her voice on Shukaku.

"Sheesh, calm down, you damn cat; I was getting there," retorted Shukaku, while the rest just sighed in annoyance. This was a typical confrontation between the siblings, and the rest ignored it, having been used to it after a long time.

Naruto blocked out the voices, not wanting to deal with any of that, as he focused on the so-called Tree Sentinel in front of him, all while he continued that slow healing process so as not to aggravate anything as a result of his chakra.

"What kind of oath makes one tear their tongue out?" He wondered out loud, but he knew no answer would come; rather, he left it as a rhetorical one.

The Tree Sentinel looked down and avoided his eyes; they see too much, read too much, and it was best not to look at those, or so she thought.

Silence ensued, and the soft sound of his healing method was the only thing that was audible to both of them. She was still weak from that one punch, but slowly, she could feel her strength return; yet, she found that her will to fight was not there; phantom pain persisted within her, that attack rendered her immobile, and her mind still tried to make sense of what happened, but nothing fruitful surfaced.

"… your life will not end today, Tree Sentinel; I refuse to end it, nor will I let you end it," he stated with finality as his eyes hardened at the prospect of someone killing themself after being healed.

"If your Order will not take you back, I will take you with me. I just found myself in a broken world, and something has led me here; eventually, I will find it, but for now, I will do what I can to help."

Time passed, and the sun found itself away from its pinnacle, yet Naruto and the Tree Sentinel remained where they were; it was clear that he deliberately slowed down the healing of the woman, as he could have healed her almost instantly, yet he refused to use his most powerful abilities, all because he wanted to maintain some secrecy from prying eyes.

"… kid, you've really changed; there was a time that you would have healed that woman instantly."

Naruto did not reply immediately; instead, he finished healing the Tree Sentinel and returned the gauntlet that he removed from her broken arm, but she did not move and remained where she was, at the root of the tree.

"… there was a time that I was a child, and that time has long passed."

"Good answer."

Silence returned as he held out his right hand to the woman, and her scarred visage looked conflicted, but soon enough, she reached out, and he pulled her up, which is when he finally had an accurate measure of her height, and indeed, she was taller than him: a whole head taller than he is.

"… you must be the one that I seek," a new voice entered his hearing, and he turned to see a woman who appeared from a swirl of blue light.

Her face was hidden by a hood as she pulled it back to reveal a young woman, a fair young woman with chestnut hair, but most notably, her left eye was shut, and a black mark appeared to hold it shut, yet he knew not what it entailed. Meanwhile, the Tree Sentinel remained nonplussed about the new arrival, and once more covered her head with the crested helm that Naruto removed.

There was a ponderous silence between the three, and gradually, the young woman broke it.

"Greetings, traveller from beyond the Fog. I am Melina," she introduced herself, and that was when a pair of eyes met a lone eye.

"I… offer you an accord."
