So I'm back with an update, Miaka's life is finally forming back to some normality. Yui summons her beast god to protect Miaka, and Noriko acts on her feelings for Miaka
Hoping someone is still invested in this story
Miaka smiled to herself, a sense of content happiness filling her chest, as if the past few years never happened, as if it was someone else's life. She'd forgotten what it felt like to have this sense of freedom, this kind of happiness again. No longer was Taka dictating her life, no longer was he looming over her shoulder, judging her choices. She finally had her own income, she finally had work, she could be sociable again. She may have still been living as a roommate with Yui and Noriko, but she was happy, she had some semblance of control. No longer sitting in a small, empty flat waiting for Taka to come home, using meaningless tasks to actually keep herself occupied until he came home. The old self that was frightened, obedient and shy existed, she was becoming her old self again. She wanted to make a good impression, she wanted to ensure she was good for the job. The manager had been very accommodating, explaining to her coworkers she had left an abusive ex and was still getting her life back together. They were all very helpful, making sure she never pushed her boundaries if she wasn't comfortable, it felt good to have a purpose again. Her reddish brown waves bound into a ponytail with a yellow ribbon, her golden green eyes bursting with life, a newfound vigour coursing through her. She had rummaged through her belongings and found some casual but appropriate clothes for work. A button-down white blouse with short sleeves and a black mini skirt, work appropriate. Wearing some white vans for work, which would be comfortable if she was running around taking orders.
"Miaka, can you take this order to table five" a coworker called, she was so far very productive, energetic and good at communicating. Compared to the shy and awkward person who came in for an interview, she was an entirely different person.
"Yes, right away" Miaka babbled nervously, carefully taking the tray as she headed in the direction of the customer. She'd taken down notes of every table she could remember allowing her to find who she needed. She'd helped people before, back when she was the priestess of Konan she had faced worse than this.
"The new girl is awfully sweet"
"Reminds me of my granddaughter"
"Can't be much older than a college student"
"Wonder what she's studying?"
"If only I was a young man again"
Miaka laughed nervously, she had expected this from her first day, new face, new attention, she had a lot of energy, anxiety. The customers were all curious about her, they all had something to say but none of them unpleasant. Hoping to do a good job, hoping to make a good impression, scared of making mistakes. However, she knew the unpleasantness that may follow her, the old life that kept trying to crawl back and ruin everything. Scared that Taka would cross her path again, scared that he may try to intrude on this part of her life. If he knew she had a job, he would know where she worked and he would harass her there, he would attempt to make her life miserable all over again. If anyone showed her attention he would become possessive. She couldn't stop him from being a customer, she couldn't stop him from using customer service and retail venues. She placed down the coffee on the table carefully, making sure she didn't spill, trying to ease her anxiety "Here's your order, my name is Miaka if you need anything" she smiled. The customer smiled warmly at her, before she headed away, gripping the tray between her fingers.
"You're doing a great job Miaka, try to breathe, I know the first trial can be nerve wracking" the manager soothed. She was making great progress for her first day, the customers already liked her and she hadn't made any mistakes yet.
Miaka smiled nervously, her brain was buzzing, memories flashing through her mind. Anxiety coursing through her, overstimulation and intrusive thoughts. "Gomen I… it's been a long time since I've been around people of this amount. And… if he finds me…." she trailed off. She wasn't the same person she used to be, she was a shadow of her old self because of him.
The manager placed their hand on her shoulder, the other coworkers shooting her sympathetic expressions. They had all gotten the short version of her story from her friends and brother, what he put Miaka through. Fair to say none of them had met Taka yet and already hated his guts. "Your brother Keisuke and friend Yui informed us of him, what he looks like, and how to spot him. He's banned from entering the premises, service or not. You don't need to worry" they smiled. They had informed them of his past behaviour and what he was capable of, so he wouldn't pose a threat to Miaka.
Miaka softened, so they really had taken precautions, she was safe, Taka couldn't control her life anymore. Her old self never would have let this happen, she felt so stupid. "Thank you" she trailed off.
"We all stumble sweetie, well find a man we think is better than he presents himself. You were young and naive and he took advantage of that" they soothed. The power dynamic in their relationship hadn't been balanced and her ex had known that from the beginning. Miaka softened, comforted by their words.
Noriko sighed wearily, the uniform of her chosen employment wasn't great for the hot weather, she felt as though she was melting, removing her cap briefly to wipe her forehead. She was relieved she no longer had long hair, it would have proved to be a bother at a time like this. She was grateful Suzaku gave her short hair upon her reincarnation, meaning she could grow it to a comfortable length. She opened her suit a little, allowing herself some breathing room, realising how much women had to cover up in this era was always surprising. But she was able to form a steady income, she was able to make a living, she could use her powers for good. She certainly had higher stamina and strength that most humans in this world lacked, often intimidated by her. But Suzaku gave her these powers for a reason, so she could protect Miaka.
"Noriko?!" A surprised voice gasped, this was the second time they had run into one another at a cafe, only this time she was working. She was certainly a welcomed face.
Nuriko's gaze averted, recognising the voice, a warm smile formed on their lips, they kept running into each other habitually these days. Another sign that they were supposed to be together, that this could go somewhere. However, catching sight of Miaka, their cheeks flushed. Miaka had certainly filled out compared to how scrawny she was at fifteen, now she was eighteen, graduated high school, she'd grown into herself, filled out. She still had curves, however they were more enunciated, obvious, her chest had become bigger and she had a stronger sense of femininity and womanhood. Her reddish brown hair was longer, bound into a ponytail atop her head, her lips were luscious and her eyelashes were longer. When she first appeared in the book, she had a naivety to her, like a flower bud that wasn't ready to bloom, but showed promise. Now she had fully bloomed, she had found her sexuality and potential, she had become a fine woman. She subtly let her eyes roam Mika's form, relieved the blush on her cheeks could be mistaken for the heat. Miaka's curves and figure amplified by the uniform she was wearing, the blouse tight around her chest, the skirt showed off her legs and curves. She realised she was staring and felt a sense of shyness overcome her, her feelings for Miaka causing her to become distracted, she swallowed shyly "I… uh… hello?" she stammered.
Miaka smiled shyly, she was so happy that Suzaku had brought them together again. Noriko had always been her best friend from the beginning, someone she could confide in. She'd been such a huge comfort to her through all this, reminding her of who she was "Heat got to your brain already?" she teased.
Nuriko shifted, Miaka still retained her mischievous side but it was comforting, knowing Taka hadn't completely ruined her "It pays the bills, and besides I'm the strongest worker they have" she joked. She didn't plan on living with Yui as a roommate forever, she needed to make her own way in the world even if it took time.
Miaka laughed, a sight that truly warmed Noriko's heart, knowing she was still capable of smiling like that. Knowing she still had a heart that could hope. She missed Miaka's smile, it didn't happen often these days. "You want something to drink? I'm sure they do cold drinks" she chuckled. The heat had to be intense, especially with a job that included physical labour.
Nuriko stretched, arching her muscles and cracking her stiff limbs, she may as well enjoy a brief break. Her manager knew where she was and knew about her friendship with Miaka "With you serving me? How can I say no, though I hope you aren't as klutzy as you used to be" she teased. She remembered the old Miaka could barely make a dish without it being inedible, when Tamahome insulted her cooking in order to hurt her. The cruel things he said to her in hopes of driving her away. But Miaka had changed a lot since then.
Miaka blushed "Noriko!" she huffed, but she was biting back a laugh.
"Wow, that delivery worker is cute" one of Miaka's coworkers gasped, how long had she known them? What was their name? How old were they? Were they single? Dating? He certainly seemed familiar with Miaka.
"Is he single?" another giggled, maybe she could slip her number when she sent them the bill.
Miaka chuckled, Noriko's popularity hadn't changed even after being reborn, she was still catching everyone's eye. Even in the book everyone remarked about how cute she was. However, now she wasn't dressing as a woman, she was actually one. But she doubted any of these girls could tell the difference, or were aware of her true identity "She is single for anyone interested" she replied. She had no idea of Noriko's dating history since Suzaku gave her a new identity in this world as a woman, but she hoped she had been happy at least.
The girls blinked and stared, the room becoming silent for a brief moment before they yelled in unison "SHE?!" They protested
Miaka nodded, she remembered when she was first confused by Nuriko and Hotohori both. She had to check that the next people she met were indeed women instead of just pretty men. "Noriko has always had an androgynous air about her, even when I was younger. But she's a girl, body and soul" she explained. She loved Noriko just the way she was, happy that she was reborn as herself, the true person she felt on the inside.
The girls blinked staring at Noriko in confusion, before sighing in defeat "Damn it, I really hoped they were a guy" one huffed.
Miaka chuckled, she wondered if Noriko even had eyes for anyone at the moment. Her last romantic endeavours consisted of Hotohori before they realised he was straight and only had eyes for Miaka. They flirted with Tamahome regularly but it was never revealed whether Nuriko actually had feelings for him or was just teasing him. Then her feelings were transferred to Miaka, she fell in love with her as a man and kept them secret right until the moment of their death.
"You know her Miaka?" The manager asked, they seemed awfully friendly and Miaka was visibly relaxed around them. Meaning they weren't their ex boyfriend.
Miaka shifted, she couldn't exactly explain she was once a priestess of a celestial deity in an alternate universe of a book. That she had an entirely different life once from other teenage girls. That Noriko was once called Nuriko, a Chinese warrior born under the star of said constellation, whom perished protecting her. The only people who believed her and knew the truth was her best friend Yui, her older brother Keisuke and his best friend Tetsuya. Anyone else would have called her insane. "Noriko, she's someone I knew from my teens, well at least high school. She was an upperclassman, we were really close; nearly as close as I am with Yui. But…." She trailed off. She had never been able to forget that moment, the first traumatic loss she ever endured during the quest for the Shinzaho. Remembering Nuriko's death in the book, when he was impaled by Ashitare of the Seiryu seven retrieving the shinzaho. Holding him in her arms, begging him to stay awake and stay with her, sobbing over his body. "She… she was in an accident, a seriously bad one. She suffered chest injuries, she was in critical condition. I stayed with her the entire time, even my friends were worried. But… she eventually recovered" she lied. She had no idea if Noriko still had the scars on her chest from when she was killed in the book, she didn't want to ask such an invasive question.
The manager looked at her sympathetically, Miaka had truly endured some hardships. It was evident that this Noriko girl was someone very important to her, she was happy Miaka had a close friendship with her. "She can stay as long as she needs to, if she's someone you can trust she's welcome here" the manager smiled.
Miaka placed a large iced drink and some cake on Noriko's table, smiling sweetly, she wanted to show her appreciation for all she had done. Being able to spend time together like they used to, Noriko always knew how to make her smile. She had the same mischievous heart as she had when she was a man in the universe of the four gods. She was a loyal friend and someone she could rely on. "You looked thirsty and I doubt you've had your break yet".
Nuriko sighed, the heat was often a bit much, she was still getting used to the climate in Miaka's world "You really are a sweetheart Miaka". She had always been a priestess of passion, representing the love that Suzaku was infamous for, she showed everyone around her such kindness it was endearing. The same way she never gave up on Yui even after Nakago pitted them against each other, the way she loved all of her warriors and mourned their deaths. She tried her hardest to help the people of Konan, trying to be a guiding light as a priestess, helping all she could.
"You've done so much for me as it is, without you guys I never would have moved out of Taka's flat, I never would have found this job opportunity and I wouldn't be saving for a new flat of my own" she smiled. When she was at her lowest, when she felt like a burden and couldn't find the courage to reach out, they had saved her. She now had a room at Yui's flat, she had her own space again and she was able to rebuild her life. She had a supportive network of the people she loved, she had people in her life who cared for her. She would have been lost without them, she never would have found herself again.
Noriko smiled, she was starting to understand why Suzaku had brought her into this world with a new identity. Taka had failed as her protector, he had failed Suzaku as a warrior and become corrupt. Sensing his priestesses distress, sensing her vulnerability and loneliness, he summoned Nuriko, gave her a new form and life as a woman. Gifting her with the celestial powers of the star she was born under, making sure his priestess would be protected. Miaka was already healing thanks to her presence, she was becoming her old self again. Suzaku had sensed that Miaka needed her and so brought them together. "It's my responsibility to protect you, if my new destiny is helping you fix your life after Taka ruined it, so be it".
Miaka shifted, she couldn't form enough gratitude into words, she just couldn't describe how happy she was that Noriko was back in her life. She felt as though a piece of her that had been missing all this time was finally returned. "You know, I still owe you big time" she mumbled. Noriko sipped her drink, eyeing Miaka, she didn't want Miaka to feel indebted to her about anything, though that was probably a habit she picked up thanks to Taka. "If you don't mind coming back, you could walk me home maybe? We could pick up dinner on the way?" Miaka suggested. Whether or not it was a date so be it, she was given a second chance to be happy, she could act on her attraction to Noriko, she could finally move on from Taka.
Noriko perked up, this was the best possible outcome she could have asked for, screaming internally from excitement. A date? A possible date with Miaka? She could finally court her as she had always wished, act on her romantic attraction towards Miaka?! She wanted to scream to the heavens. Thanking Suzaku for all the blessings he had given her, for giving her this opportunity. She coughed shyly, trying to keep her expression composed "Sure…. Text me when your shift ends and I'll come get you" she mumbled.
Miaka beamed, a flutter of excitement filled her chest, she couldn't remember the last time she had jitters over a date "I can't wait" she smiled. The nerves would at least be eased, given their history together and comfortableness with one another. They could just hang out as old friends and progress from there.
Taka huffed, things just kept getting worse, he didn't know why life had turned its back on him, why he was being punished like this. First Miaka had stopped coming home, she wouldn't answer her phone, she kept avoiding him, she kept shutting him down and ignoring him. She was treating him like a stranger, giving him a cold shoulder, all of her belongings had been moved out of his flat into Yui's. Yui wouldn't let her see her and kept telling him to leave, her eyes filled with hatred and anger towards him. He knew Yui had a grudge against him but he could never figure out why. He now had a restraining order stopping him from coming anywhere near Miaka, he had no idea if Miaka had forged it herself or if she had gotten one of her friends to help. So all he could do was sit alone in their flat without her, waiting for her to come home and hope this was all a bad dream. The memories of her everywhere, suffocating him, blinding him. It wasn't fair, how could she do this to him? He just wanted to provide, he just wanted to take care of her as he always had. He had lived in poverty when he was Tamahome, worrying about income, trying to feed his family, she had understood that back then. He protected her in the book and he was doing so now in her world, what made him the bad guy? He was still working, but he was distracted, all of his coworkers knew about their breakup and how badly he'd taken it. Memories of Miaka flashing through his brain, wondering what she was doing, who she was seeing and just what had become of her. Who was it that kept her attention, who was it that came between them and stole the love she once had for him? If only she would let him speak to her.
Suddenly, he heard laughing, a familiar voice ringing in his ears, the same voice he had once taken for granted in the past. It couldn't be, he had to be going mad from loneliness, he averted his gaze and his eyes widened. There, standing by a table in an apron was Miaka, her hair in a cute ponytail wearing a blouse and skirt. He could hardly believe it, this couldn't be true, since when had she gotten a job? When had she gotten the interview? Had Yui helped her procure this? Since when did she smile like that? He felt anger forming in his chest, knowing someone else was responsible for that smile, knowing someone else was making her happier than he ever could. He stormed in the direction of the cafe, his eyes burning.
Miaka cleared a table, humming to herself as she did so, speaking to Noriko brought her such happiness and nostalgia, it was like old times. Noriko could always sense when she was troubled, when she was unhappy or disheartened, doing everything she could to distract her. She'd truly missed her and was so glad they were able to reconnect. Able to forget all the horrors of the book and what her life had become, making new memories with the people closest to her. She had Yui as a roommate, she was able to bond with her loved ones and get her life back, things finally felt right again.
"MIAKA" a familiar voice raged, their lone laced with bitterness. He had been looking for her everywhere, trying to contact her but she changed her number. She never left the house alone and her friends always helped her avoid him. Now he finally had her alone and they could speak.
Miaka stiffened, the hands that were holding the cup slipped, causing it to clatter onto the ground, but she barely acknowledged it, the world felt as though it was underwater. All sounds felt muffled and far away, but his voice felt so clear. Her body turned rigid, her stomach dropped as anxiety pooled inside of her, her eyes widened in fear, biting her lip in panic as her face paled.
No
No
Not here, she'd finally found a job and Taka had to show up now?! How was he able to sniff her out no matter how much distance she put between them? Cold sweat ran down her back and neck, her chest heaving as she felt herself trembling. She wanted to run away, she wanted to hide, she wanted to find a darkened place where nobody could find her until it was safe. Her voice died in her throat, unable to scream for help.
Noriko immediately recognised the voice, turning in the direction of Taka, how she hadn't sensed him she had no idea. He was getting better at being sneaky, like a man obsessed. Why he couldn't accept that Miaka had abandoned her feelings for him, that her devotion to him and now become resentment, she had no idea. Was he that oblivious or just in denial?
Taka stormed towards the cafe, his eyes burning with anger "Miaka! What the hell is this? You have a job now?" he raged. He'd told her she never had to worry about anything, that he would always take care of her. He would be the one to provide, to give her anything and everything she ever needed.
Miaka shivered, tears spiking her eyes as she felt herself trembling, her chest was heaving with panic, she couldn't breathe, her clothes suddenly felt constricting. She couldn't move, she couldn't speak, she couldn't run, desperately looking for a way out. Begging and pleading silently for help, for someone to help her. Noriko got to her feet as customers began to mutter and whisper, she knew exactly how to handle this. She blocked the entrance Taka had to reach her, puffing up her chest as her eyes glowed with anger, a red hue lining her violet pink eyes. She could feel Suzaku's power resonating through her body, without the gauntlets she had before "That's close enough" Noriko snapped.
Miaka's manager heard the commotion, hurrying outside, wondering if there was an argument happening. Until they heard Miaka's name being yelled and realised what was happening, spotting Miaka frozen by a table, locked in a comatose state from fear. They immediately rushed to her side, placing an arm around her.
"She's my girlfriend, I have every right to speak to her" Taka snapped, why were they keeping them apart? Why was Miaka acting like a stranger towards him and why was he the villain? He had no idea what had become of her, she felt like an entirely different woman than the one he knew. All he wanted was to make her happy, give her the life she deserved.
"Ex girlfriend, she dumped you Taka, she made that clear when she moved out and became my roommate" Nuriko snapped, her eyes turning a darkened red, the willow symbol on her chest glowed brightly beneath her clothes. Tamahome had once been her best friend, her fellow warrior and confidant. They had shared a bond being born under Suzaku and a brotherhood. Now she couldn't even recognise him, he wasn't the same person who loved Miaka. None of the others would have recognised him either. Miaka no longer loved him, she had abandoned any affection she once felt for him and moved on.
Taka glared, everyone acted like they knew what was best for Miaka, like they knew her better than he did "What have you been saying to her? What lies have you told her?" He demanded. They were putting delusions and lies into her head, turning her against him.
Noriko scoffed, Taka was truly delusional, assuming they were the villains, they they had turned Miaka against him "I didn't tell her anything, she told us everything. From your negligence, gaslighting and controlling behaviour" she scoffed. His mistreatment of Miaka, his cruelty towards her was what caused her to abandon him, what caused her to distance herself. If he had showed her the love and devotion she deserved then maybe Miaka wouldn't have changed. Hotohori was willing to make her his empress, he'd loved her ever since he was a child and was nothing but devoted to her. But he gave up on her once he realised she loved Tamahome and married Houki. Tasuki even fell in love with Miaka which led to him being manipulated by the enemy. All of them could have made her happier than Taka ever had "Miaka was everything to us, she was everything to me and I can't believe I gave her up for you!" She growled.
Taka hesitated, this girl knew Miaka from her past, but how? She was familiar with Miaka, she spoke of strangers he didn't know, people who had been in love with Miaka. Somewhere there had to be memories of them, locked within his own mind. But this woman refused to tell him, Miaka's friends refused to tell him. "You know something about Miaka's past, something I can't remember, how?" He demanded.
Noriko sighed, Taka was reborn in Tamahome's image but without his memories, false ones formed, but after finding the jewels he retained his old memories. For a brief period he was the man that Miaka loved, but now he had warped into something ugly. There was only one explanation for this, one that Taka couldn't except. However, it seemed Suzaku was confiscating them due to the abuse of his beloved priestess, punishing Taka for his actions. She remembered everything about her past life, her previous jealousy towards Miaka, her past affections for Hotohori. She remembered the fight for the Shinzaho and all the memories she and Miaka shared. She would make Miaka happier than Taka/Tamahome ever had "It seems Suzaku just favours me as Miaka's protector now" she hummed. She pointed at Miaka's manager "You're banned here Taka, they know what you did, what you put Miaka through. Look at her, she's trembling at the sight of you. You destroyed her, you think you can make her happy?!" Noriko snapped.
Taka glanced at Miaka, the smile from her face earlier was gone, replaced with pure fear, she looked like she was about to cry, wincing at the sight of him. He did this to her? The same tenderness she once showed him had warped into something else entirely. The same love and devotion she once gave him had turned into bitterness and fear.
"I'd walk away with what little pride you have left Taka, forget Miaka ever existed and go live what life you have left. You aren't welcome here" she warned. If he cared about Miaka in the slightest, he would leave her be and let her live her life in peace. He'd stop invading on her life and he'd let her enjoy her freedom. She was restraining herself to the extent that she was tempted to unleash her anger on him, to make him hurt the way he hurt Miaka.
Taka glared, his gaze hardening "You did this, ever since you came into Miami's life she changed, she's different" he growled. Ever since Yui started taking her away from home, let them meet, since Miaka started spending time with her she changed. The more she spent time with him, the more she changed into someone else.
Noriko stepped towards Taka, glaring him down as a scary aura formed around her, her eyes glowing red with celestial power. She no longer considered him a friend, a celestial Seishi, he was nothing to her now. The bond they once shared had been severed, he wasn't the same man. The old Tamahome would have never hurt Miaka like this, never made her cry, never neglected her. "I've been there for her since she was fifteen, I saw her cry over you, tear herself apart over you. She sacrificed a happier life with Hotohori and myself over you. We thought you'd treat her better but we were beyond stupid to give her up…" she trailed off. She had seen the way Miaka's heart broke when he sacrificed himself to be handed over to the enemy. The way Miaka went into an emotional coma when he was under the influence of Kodoku and attacked her. When Tamahome rejected her affections, when he was so cold to her. Now he was even worse, he was given the chance to make her happy and he messed it up. Hotohori was willing to make her his wife, his empress, throw every possible potential wife from his harem to the side. To choose Miaka above all the women in the world to live by her side. Even when he married Houki, he never stopped loving Miaka, she was a special woman in his eyes. "I love her, I've loved her from the moment I became her warrior, I died loving her. I'm not going to give her up again, so I'd back off before I hurt you" she warned.
Taka shivered, there was a power about this woman that felt inhuman and he didn't know where it was coming from, he wanted to reach out and grab Miaka but he knew if he tried this woman may kill him. Her eyes glowed red with some kind of supernatural power, an aura only he could see radiating from her body, a glowing emblem on her chest in Chinese characters. But he was the only one who could see it, nobody else could. "You can't keep me from her" he snapped.
Noriko raised a fist, before he could blink her fist met his cheek, acting on her rage without thinking, purely instinctive. Thinking of all he had put Miaka through, all the pain and suffering. The strength sending him flying across the street, across pavements, distanced away into a fountain, landing in the water, a loud yell of pain escaping his lips followed by a large splash. People stared in disbelief and awe at Noriko's display of anger and strength. She growled, her body still trembling with rage and adrenaline, her power slowly decreasing as she calmed herself "Consider that a warning Taka" she pressed. She sighed angrily, turning away to face Miaka, she knew she had to be frightened by all of this "Sorry about the mess, I'll help out anyway I can" she apologised to the manager.
"No, thank you, nobody was hurt, but… we didn't expect that" the manager protested, they had believed it would lead to a scuffle, or Taka may attack her. They never expected her to show such strength and send him flying like that.
"Do you need a police report?" Noriko asked, she would happily stay to act as a witness and answer any necessary questions. However, she would need to inform her boss of what happened.
"Sadly yes due to him being a banned and dangerous person for Miaka, but also a fight having occurred in front of customers" the manager sighed. This wasn't what she had hoped would occur, but none of the customers were hurt just startled. This had gone as well as it could have. Miaka panicked, did this mean she had lost a job before she had even managed to pass probation? She needed this job, she needed the money, she couldn't lose this. Her eyes fixated on the manager anxiously. "Breathe Miaka, this doesn't affect your employment with us, your friends warned us about him. Though we will have to take measures to protect you" they smiled.
Miaka softened, her face filled with relief, sighing heavily, releasing a breathe she didn't even know she had been holding. Her entire body was still shaking like a leaf, she could feel her heart in her throat and her body was shaking. She couldn't remember the last time she had felt such fear before.
Noriko approached Miaka patiently, placing a hand on her shoulder "Miaka? Can you hear me?" she asked. He couldn't hurt her anymore, the police would be coming and he would be handled. She'd been so very brave but she didn't need to worry anymore. Miaka softened, turning to Noriko with a panicked but calmer gaze, was it over? She felt as though she was drowning in her fear, underwater and nobody could hear her screams. "You're safe now, he can't hurt you" she soothed, she just needed to breathe, find her inner calm and relax. Nobody would let him near her and with that punch he'd be out for a while.
Miaka's eyes welled up with tears, her body starting to tremble all over again, her lip wobbling, throwing herself at Noriko, burying her face against her chest. Looking into his eyes she saw no love, she so no empathy, no kindness, just silent anger, frustration, impatience. Demanding to control her, making her listen, shutting down her voice. Remembering how cold and lonely she felt, the emptiness of that small flat, waiting for Taka to come home. Noriko was so warm, her arms made her feel safe, her voice calmed her, like sunshine. She wanted to stay where she felt safe and warm, not in Taka's cold, entrapped arms. "I… I thought he was… I thought he'd try and drag me back…." she whimpered.
The manager's expression softened, giving Noriko a knowing look, subtly suggesting she understood.
Noriko wrapped her arms around Miaka, holding her as she trembled, giving people a warning glare that Miaka needed space. To mind their own business and not harass her with questions. She was the bravest person she knew, the strongest girl she had ever met, stroking her hair soothingly. She knew how scared Miaka was, how lost she had felt, but she wasn't alone anymore. "Miaka, I swore I'd always protect you, I won't let anyone hurt you ever again, especially Taka" she soothed. Taka wasn't the same man he was, he wasn't the man Miaka had once loved, and he would never see her again.
"So, he's her ex boyfriend…" the police scribbled, he wondered how long they had been involved, how long they had been dating for him to turn this abusive and for Miaka to have never come forward. Miaka nodded shakily, still gripping Noriko's arm tightly, her eyes red from crying. She didn't want to answer any questions, she didn't want to say anything else. She just wanted to be left alone and go home. But if she didn't answer their questions nothing could be done. "And may I ask your relationship with her… sir?… miss?" The officer asked, turning to Noriko.
"Noriko Miyazaki, and it's miss" Noriko stated, she knew Yui would want an update on this, she would need to inform her as it would be on the news. But it was necessary to protect Miaka and ensure Taka was out of the picture. She would give them all the information they needed.
The police officer scribbled calmly "And may I ask your relationship with the young lady?" he asked, according to the manager and customers they were very familiar and friendly with one another.
"I'm roommates with her childhood friend, but me and Miaka have been best friends since high school" Noriko explained. She wouldn't give any information that would put Miaka in danger, but she would give the bare minimum necessary. All she wanted was to get Miaka home and help her relax. The officer nodded, it would explain why she was so protective and how she knew Miaka. "Her older brother Keisuke, her childhood friend Yui Hongo and her partner Tetsuya all know about Taka" she explained. They would all attest against Taka, they all had incriminating evidence to hold against him which wouldn't work in his favour. The police raised an eyebrow, so her family knew about him? "They've been dating since she was fifteen but in recent years he's become more controlling and abusive. She recently moved in with Yui and myself for her safety" Noriko pressed.
The police officer's expression became sympathetic as he noted Miaka's frightened state, she was cowering behind miss Miyazaki, her eyes full of fear and trembling. This had been a nasty shock for her. "I see and does he have a restraining order?" The officer asked.
Noriko nodded, having a previous restraining order wouldn't fare well for him "He can't come anywhere near the residence where Miaka is staying, but he still presses his luck outside of those boundaries" Noriko explained. She wanted Taka out of the picture and out of Miaka's life.
The officer nodded, taking more notes, he gave Miaka a sympathetic look "I'm sorry you had to endure such a fright miss, he won't be doing that anytime soon" he reassured her. Miaka softened, knowing Taka would be in custody, that he would be in a cell for an extended period of time brought her relief. He had nobody who could bail him out, no family, no loved ones. All of them formulated by Suzaku, no living family members, nothing. He didn't have the money to bail himself out at least not to her knowledge. Meaning she could breathe easier for a period. They turned to Noriko "That was quite a number you pulled on him, impressive for a delivery girl" they praised.
Noriko nodded, she'd gone easy on him, she had withheld a lot of her strength but she had still done a number on him. She was stronger than Taka ever hoped to be "I'll do anything to protect her" she stated.
They nodded, skimming through their notebooks and communicating with one another. Tipping their caps at both of the women with a comforting expression "Well, he'll be spending a few nights in a cell, we'll see what to do with him after" they explained.
The manager sighed, watching the officers leave with a semi conscious Taka in tow "Well that was a mess" they sighed.
Miaka bowed her head sadly, she would be surprised if she even had a job after this, the one thing she had for herself Taka had put at risk. It had been going so well before Taka showed up "I'm so sorry" she mumbled. She would just have to keep trying, keep looking for another job, anyone who would hire her.
"Don't you apologise for anything sweetie, we couldn't have known he'd try something in daylight at your work. Anyhow, you've had a shock but you did well for a first trial…" they smiled. She had been very popular with the customers, making sure they were comfortable and happy. Aside from this mishap she had more than earned the offered position she applied for.
Miaka's eyes widened, her eyes beaming with hope, this was everything she could possibly want. Taka had ruined her life as much as she believed "So.. have I… do I…am I… hired?" she stammered. With this she could pay Yui rent, she could save up for her own place and finally get her life back together.
The manager smiled, she had the job from the moment she started, everyone had only positives to say about her "You've had nothing but positive praise all day, you've certainly won regulars over. You got the job".
Miaka's eyes widened in delight, throwing her arms around Noriko's neck in delight, happy tears spilling down her cheeks "I got the job Noriko! I have an actual job" she sobbed. She now had meaning again, she had a form of employment so she could save up money, form an income. She had something in her life to keep her busy, make her happy. She could form her confidence back and actually feel like a person again.
Noriko smiled, ruffing her head happily "Congrats" she praised. She knew Miaka could do it, she had an endearing personality people just couldn't help but love. She was relieved that Taka hadn't taken this away from her, like he had everything else.
"Wait? Taka came to your work" Yui snapped in concern, she knew he was desperate to get Miaka back, she knew he was desperate to salvage what crumbs he could get his hands on. But to attempt to attack her in public, to attempt to try and drag her back to his flat, god knows what could have happened. It was a good thing they informed the manager and that Noriko had been passing by, she felt sick knowing what could have happened. Miaka was safe and she was back home, that was what mattered. Miaka nodded shakily, she realised how much she'd been shaking as soon as they got home. Noriko as promised got her food on the way home, getting her comfort food to make her feel better. She hadn't realised how hungry she was until she ate. Just hearing his voice, she had felt her entire body turn rigid and go into panic mode. "Did he hurt you? Did he hit you?" Yui protested anxiously, if he had so much as laid a hand on her he was a dead man. She knew Taka had become controlling, though he lacked his celestial powers, he was still stronger than he looked.
"He didn't lay a hand on her, I never let him get that close" Noriko soothed, by luck she had been passing by Miaka's work to check in and see how her first day was going. If she hadn't been there when Taka was passing by she dreaded to think what could have happened. He would never let Taka touch her again.
Yui softened, hugging Miaka tightly, Miaka felt smaller than before, like a frightened animal curling into a ball to protect itself. She knew Miaka had endured a lot dating Taka, she finally had her life together, she finally found her own footing. Now he wanted to rip it all away from her so she would rely only on him. She remembered Nakago, how he manipulated her, isolated her from the ones she could trust. How he turned her against Miaka and made her into a pawn. Miaka had endured the same thing she had at the hands of Taka, seeing it from another perspective made her realise how frightened Miaka must have been back then. "Oh Miaka, we were so happy you finally got a job, and he had to ruin it" she mumbled. She hoped he never tried to show his face again or there would be trouble, she just hoped the police took this seriously.
Miaka nuzzled against her, if he was a monster in the book she could have gotten rid of him. But he wasn't a fictional character anymore, he was a human being. "He's still a person Yui, even if I dumped him he could still roam freely" she trailed off. No matter where she went, even if she cast him aside, Taka was human now and could still follow her. So long as he was obsessed with her, so long as he believed they were fated to be together, she would have no freedom.
Yui tightened her grip, she wasn't going to watch Miaka deteriorate again. She remembered the state of her when she pulled her from Taka's nest. The emptiness in her eyes, the weight she had lost, the way she was crying out for help. She wouldn't let it repeat, she wouldn't let him get his hands on her "Not if I made a wish" she growled. It was because of Miaka's previous love for him that Suzaku gave him life, now she could send him back where he belonged. He could become Tamahome again but with all the memories of what he'd done to never gave up on her, even when she became her enemy, even when she believed that Miaka had abandoned her.
Miaka pulled back, her eyes wide and confused "Yui-chan?" she questioned, something in her gut told her this was a bad idea. She knew Yui had traumatic memories from their time in the book, her experience as priestess had been very different than Miaka's. She never wanted Yui to feel like that ever again, that lonely isolated feeling. Yui's wishes had been warped by Nakago, by her trauma, if she could make the wish all over again she knew she would do it differently.
Yui pressed a hand to her chest "My warriors may be dead, but I'm still the priestess of Seiryu. If I wish for him to be sent back to the universe of the four gods so be it" she stated. Kuto no longer needed her, her warriors no longer needed her, but her best friend did. Amiboshi was the only Seiryu warrior left, the only one to retain his memories from the past, living in peace. All of her other warriors had perished, all of them had been killed or died in battle. She could finally use her powers with a clear conscience. She wanted to use her power against Taka, she wanted to teach him a lesson and finally get rid of him.
"Yui still has her powers, she could ask Seiryu to condemn Taka back to the book" Noriko agreed, Yui was a priestess, she was dating Keisuke but she was still capable of summoning Seiryu. She still retained her purity due to Tetsuya being patient, never pushing a physical relationship with her. Yui loved Miaka dearly, she was her best friend, she had wronged Miaka in the past and wanted to make up for all the pain she had caused her best friend. Yui was their best chance at finally severing the link between Taka and Miaka, finally casting him out of her life.
"It's worth a shot" Keisuke agreed, they didn't have any other options, no matter where Miaka went he found her. He had that connection to her no matter how much she hid from him. What did they have to lose?
Tetsuya shifted, he knew all the trauma Yui had endured in the book, he hated to think about what she went through, both of them. Yui's introduction into the book had led to her being assaulted by thugs in an alley, then Nakago feeding into her trauma and loneliness. It took a long time for her to process what happened to her, to overcome her grief and trauma, to trust again. He didn't want Yui to relive anything painful. She was finally healed, finally healthy loved Yui, he'd loved her from the moment he heard about her story, from the moment he learned all the trauma and burdens she carried alone. He swore from that moment he would protect her, he would keep her safe. "Only if you're comfortable" he asked.
Yui softened, she knew Tetsuya worried for her, he knew what she would be reliving by going through this "Its for Miaka's sake, I can't relax knowing Taka is still out there" she insisted. She wanted her best friend to be safe, Miaka never gave up on her and she would return the favour. She wanted to do right by her best friend, to finally use this power to protect her. She had a second chance to redeem herself as the priestess of Seiryu.
Keisuke nodded, he knew how much Miaka meant to her, they had been best friends since they were toddlers. They shared dreams with one another, they had hopes. The bond they shared, the love they felt for one another, how far they would go for one another. However, it was Yui's fragility that had led to her nearly being consumed the first time. "Just don't do anything crazy, remember what happened the first time" he reminded her. Seiryu had come close to devouring her due to her sadness, due to her emptiness.
Yui nodded, she knew the risk, but she was a different person now, she didn't have the same mentality that Nakago was so easily able to manipulate. "I still have wishes, I can still enter the book, I know I can do this" she smiled. Nakago couldn't corrupt her anymore, none of her warriors could influence her, this was her choice to make.
Yui, Noriko, Tetusya, Keisuke and Miaka all stood outside of the library cautiously, ever since the battle had ended, their respective gods summoned, none of them had ever returned. Their stories had ended, their chapters closed. Their warriors had all perished, their respective countries no longer needed them, their ties to the universe of the four gods ended. Miaka had summoned Suzaku, saving both words from damnation, Yui had used her last wish to free Suzaku to redeem herself. After battling Tenkou to regain Taka's memories as Tamahome, preventing him from corrupting the universe of the four gods and Miaka's reality. They had never needed to enter the book again.
"It's been such a long time, it's so nostalgic" Miaka reflected, the first time they came here they had been seeking study guides, trying to focus on their future. She had such immature delusions of what she would have wished for. Her current self would have done things much differently, aware of the sacrifices that had to be made. Seeing it with different eyes made her realise how much she had changed.
"We were just girls back then" Yui agreed, looking at this place as an older teen felt so different. They had been sucked into the book without any awareness of what they were getting into. They were given such responsibility, unaware of just what they were getting into and matured due to their experiences. Both placed in positions of power to aid their respected countries. She wishes she could go back and support her younger self, give her the support she so desperately needed.
"This…. Is where I came from" Noriko reflected, before she was given life, before Suzaku reincarnated her. Miaka and her best friend had happened to come to the library, looking for study guides and happened upon the book. Leading to them becoming their respected priestesses of both countries.
Miaka smiled, it was so long ago, so nostalgic, but brought her pleasant memories. "It's what led to us meeting" she nodded. She formed the bonds that would change her life, the friendships she formed with her warriors of Suzaku, all the lessons she took from them. The person she became thanks to their guidance and support. Noriko shifted, this was certainly going to be a strange day.
Tetsuya stepped towards the counter, he knew which section the book was bound to be in. But due to its age it could be in repair, disarray or even being restored. The universe of the four gods was created in 1923, several decades before Miaka, Yui or even Suzuno Osugi was priestess. "Excuse me, but me and my friends are hoping to find a book, it's a rather old piece of literature. The author was called Einosuke Okuda?" he questioned. Einosuke Okuda was the creator of the book, the one who gave all the celestial warriors their life. He was the one who created each god of their respected region. Without him, none of the fated priestesses would come to be. He was the father of the first priestess Takiko Okuda, however, upon his daughters fate of being consumed by Genbu, he sacrificed himself and her to save them both.
"Einosuke Okuda? That book must be over a hundred years old?" The staff muttered, it was considered a vintage piece of work, rarely anyone asked for that book. Not may even knew it existed at all.
"I know it's a difficult find, but it would be really helpful to us if you would find it" Tetsuya pressed. Miaka and Yui had happened on the book by chance, not knowing they had been guided to it. They were always supposed to become a priestess, they had just never realised it.
The librarian hummed "From what I know that piece was in restoration, re-translated, new cover, so it would be protected. I'll check if it was returned to the library yet, it could still be in care" she explained. The book was in pieces, the paper and cover were falling to pieces, it was so fragile it needed care. Yui shifted, if the book was in restoration, so much would be changing in the world of the book. The book represented said world, the state of the book effecting the world within it, if the book was in repair it would be preserving it. But also the deterioration of the inner world would be repaired, the lives of the habitants improved. "Yes, the book was previously in restoration due to its state of deterioration, a rather valuable piece. However, it was returned recently" the librarian smiled. The group sighed in relief, knowing the book was in good hands and cared for was a relief. "It should be under historical literature, the non fiction section" she explained.
"Thank you, this is truly appreciated" Tetsuya smiled
Miaka brushed her fingers along the spines of the books in front of her, she felt her younger self screaming within her. She had been absentmindedly looking for study guides, anything to help her improve her grades and exams. Suzaku called out to her, at first she believed she was dreaming and simply losing her mind. The naive younger girl who still had optimism and hope, who wanted to find her dream guy. Unaware of the power she had been bestowed with, when she would have used Suzaku's celestial power for useless and immature reasons. So much had changed, her perspectives, her opinion, her personality. Soon her eyes fell upon a familiar book, smiling to herself, a feeling of nostalgia washing through her. The black words of the title refreshed, cleaner and newer, the once faded red cover replaced with a fresh darkened cover. She took the book in her hands delicately, stroking her hand across the cover, the scent of a new book.
The universe of the four gods
All of her friends, her fallen warriors were within this book, were still waiting for her. Their souls slowly reincarnating into their second life, finding peace after finally serving their purpose.
Hotohori, emperor of Konan and the gentlest of them all, leaving his wife Houki and their child after perishing in battle. The man whom had fallen in love with her as a child, hoping she would ease his loneliness. Perhaps the woman she became now could have loved him the way he deserved.
Mitsukake who gave the last of his Ki to save the sick, wounded and deceased. He had lost his lover to a deadly illness and fell into a deep depression, however Miaka and her friends were able to save him from his darkness. Finding a new sense of hope and helping him become a warrior.
Tasuki, the last of the three remaining warriors and now the leader of his tribe of bandits. A man who claimed to hate women due to his many sisters whom had coddled him. However, was a passionate, loyal and caring person who became her most loyal follower. In another lifetime he could have been a very doting lover to her.
Chichiri, a nomadic monk who was a protege of the goddess Taiitskun, losing everyone he had ever loved during a flood. His fiance left him for his best friend breaking his heart, during a fight he lost one of his eyes. He was a broken man but he harboured a kind heart tormented by the ghosts of his past.
Nuriko, her current living warrior and best friend, someone who lost their little sister as a child which broke his heart, scared to forget her. He took on his sisters mantle so he could keep her memory alive. Falling in love with Hotohori and developing a crush on Tamahome, later falling for Miaka. Now reborn as a woman in the modern era to protect Miaka.
Chiriko, the youngest of her warriors who gave his life to protect them, still a student and the last warrior to appear as Miaka was summoning Suzaku. He sacrificed himself for his friends after being possessed by a Seiryu warrior. Truly the bravest of all of her warriors and by far the youngest.
Then there was Tamahome, the boy she fell for who ended up ruining her life
Yui approached calmly, placing her hand atop Miaka's shoulder, sensing her sadness. She knew Miaka had formed deep friendships with all of her warriors, stronger than she ever had. She could have even had romances with several of them, perhaps making her happier than Taka. Knowing her jealousy had cost Miaka her friends broke her heart, that she had ripped Miaka's friends from her. Nakago plotting against Miaka and taking her warriors from her to torment her. "Miaka?" She questioned.
Miaka blinked, her vision becoming blurry as her heart swelled with emotions, tears spilling down her cheeks and onto the cover of the book. Nostalgia and sadness filling her heart "Gomen, I… it's been so long, the memories….thinking of them all" she apologised. She wished she could tell them she loved them, hug them one more time and tell them she never forgot. How deeply they had all impacted her lives, how they helped her grow up.
Yui softened, she knew Miaka had been closer to her warriors than she had, they had been by her side from the beginning supporting and guiding her. She wished her warriors had shown that same kindness and devotion, instead they were merely obedient and cold to her. The only ones to show her some form of kindness were Amiboshi and Suboshi, the twins born under their star. "I know, I can't imagine how hard this is for you" she soothed. Noriko stared at the book, her mind racing as a flood of conflicting emotions filled her, this was the book that led Miaka to appear in their world. This was the book that brought them together, where she fell in love with Miaka. The book in which during her past life she was killed by Ashitare, before Suzaku gave her a new life. The book that told her story, her younger sisters death, her decision to become a concubine to the emperor. Her destiny to meet Miaka, to become a warrior of Suzaku and protect her priestess. Such a small object had changed both of their lives.
Keisuke saw Noriko's conflicted expression, this had to be creating some form of an existential crisis for her. Knowing that her life had begun in the pages of what was considered fiction in their world "Noriko?" he asked patiently.
Noriko blinked, snapping out of her daze, averting her gaze as she hugged herself shyly "Sorry I…. It's just a bit much, knowing I was…. For you guys… I was just a fictional character in the pages of a book" she stammered. Was this how Tamahome felt when he found out? How had Tasuki and the others reacted when they entered Miaka's world? This eerie feeling of knowing you didn't exist to other people? Knowing she was now a human, a living breathing person, with consciousness. She was born to protect Miaka, she had known that before Miaka had even appeared in their world, all celestial warriors knew this feeling.
Miaka softened, reaching out to squeeze Noriko's hand tightly, she knew this was a hard concept to grasp. Before Suzaku gave her a life as a human, she was considered fictional to others. But the love she felt for her warriors, the time they spent together, the bond they shared, it was all real. She would carry those memories for the rest of her life "You might have been fictional to everyone else, but to me, you were my best friend. My time in the book was as real as any lifetime" she smiled. Noriko softened, a warm smile formed on her lips as she squeezed Miaka's hand.
Yui sighed, this book was the cause of all of her sadness and trauma, unlike Miaka's introduction to the book, it had been largely unpleasant for her. She wondered what it had been like for the other priestesses when they entered the book. The book where she previously developed a crush on Taka, something that now made her skin crawl, she couldn't imagine feeling such a way about him now. Where she was attacked, where Nakago found her and manipulated her. Where she became Miaka's enemy as all of her warriors perished. Where she summoned Suzaku, where she became a villain. It felt so strange to observe it from different eyes.
"Yui?" Tetsuya soothed, he could see the gears working in her head, her eyes growing distant as she reflected on her past. Reliving all of her trauma born of her time within the pages of the book. He knew it was a part of her life she wanted to forget but would always be tied to.
Yui's gaze hardened and she sighed heavily, this wasn't a time to be nostalgic, they had a mission to complete "Let's do this" Yui stated, they had nothing to lose.
Yui stared at the book in front of her, ever since they retuned from the library, she had left it on the coffee table and hadn't touched it since. Part of her still felt that pull to the book, that same hypnotic trance that had led to her finding the book in the first place. She was older, wiser, more experienced, less immature, abandoning her past resentment of Miaka. But the fear still lingered, remembering how she was nearly consumed, remembering her past actions, how corrupt she became. She was scared of being haunted by her past actions, what if she was consumed by her guilt, her remorse and her sadness?
"You don't have to do this now Yui, we have the book and that's what matters" Tetsuya reassured her. They had the book in their possession, it was safe with them and it would be protected. They could take their time with the summoning, they could prepare for what was to come.
Yui nodded, she appreciated his support, helping her through the worst of it. "I know, I don't have to use all my wishes at once, I get three of them. But I'd still rather have the power now" she mumbled. What if Taka attempted something again while she hesitated and it was too late to use the power of Seiryu against him? She hesitantly opened the book, flipping through the pages until she found Amiboshi's village. Knowing he would be older, wiser, still living with his adopted family, possibly married, children of his own while his twin had passed. She licked her lips, summoning courage from within herself, wondering of any of her fallen warriors would be watching over her, making her feel less alone. She took a deep breathe "KaiJin" she summoned. The book began to glow brightly, a familiar symbol forming on Yui's forehead, a blue light emitting from the book and Yui's forehead, illuminating the room.
Tetsuya sat nearby, watching her closely with hesitation, he'd seen the beast gods summoned before, but never in person, from a distance. He wasn't with Miaka when she summoned Suzaku, nor was he with Yui when summoned Seiryu.
Miaka gripped her hands into a prayer, watching Yui with fear and reservation. She knew the risks of summoning their beast gods, the same pain it caused. Like you were being eaten from the inside out, the inhuman pain. Yui was nearly devoured due to her sadness, the pain of the trauma she endured in the book. The loneliness caused by her one sided love for Tamahome, knowing none of her warriors never cared for her, knowing she never belonged in the book. Knowing she was never cherished by anyone in the book. Miaka was the only constant in Miaka's life, the only person who truly cared for her and kept coming back to save her.
Noriko sat beside Miaka watching Yui with concern, she hadn't been by Miaka when she was finally able to summon the beast god. The first attempt to summon Suzaku had failed due to Seiryu's interference. Now that Yui was summoning her beast god years later as an ally rather than an enemy, it was a strange sense of nostalgia.
Keisuke swallowed nervously, gripping his hands into balled fists as he watched Yui take the plunge. Watching his sisters best friend, someone he'd known since she was little, using such divine power, putting herself in harms way to protect her best friend. Yui knew the cost of such consequences if anything went wrong and she faltered.
Yui took a deep breath, she knew she was stronger than she was before, she'd healed her wounds and was no longer corruptive. It had been three years since she summoned her beast god, three years since she had finally closed this chapter of her life and she was returning again. Nakago was gone, he could no longer fill her head with lies and turn her against her best friend. A familiar feeling but with a different mind set, this time to protect her best friend, rather than be her enemy. "The four palaces of the heavens, the four corners of the earth, in the name of sacred law, faith and fortune…" she recited, she felt her skin tingling, a familiar energy flowing through her, her eyes shining brightly.
Tetsuya watched patiently, he had never witnessed Yui summoning Seiryu before, it was a different kind of energy, a different kind of power.
"I summon you, Seiryu, blue guardian of the east" Yui rehearsed, such a familiar feeling after all these years. She had once used this spell to seal away Miaka's beast god out of spite, to prevent her from intervening with Nakago's plans. Now she was once again using Seiryu's power against Suzaku, but this time against Tamahome solely for hurting her best friend. "I summon you to appear before us, from the palaces of the heavens, for the sake of those who worship you and heed your presence" Yui continued. The sky outside the flat glowed brightly, an electric type energy forming in newly darkened clouds. To any casual observer it would appear like a lightening storm, but to those with experience knew Seiryu had been summoned.
"Come to us, vanquish all wickedness and evil that threatens us, and with your mighty power, save us. Protect Miaka" Yui pressed, she wanted Taka's corruption to end, his wicked heart and cruelty to come to an end. She wanted to save her best friend from pain and loneliness, the man who had abused her. The man who dimmed her light and tried to separate them. He was wicked, he was evil and he was heartless, his love for Miaka became warped until he became a monster. She felt her skin tingling, a power surging through her, as if lightening itself was coursing through her blood. "Save her, save us, and grant my wish" Yui continued, her eyes opened wide, her greenish blue eyes glowing with blue energy. "Descend to us now, from the heavens above" she yelled loudly, her eyes fierce and brave, a giant blue glow emitted from Yui, filling the room and surrounding her, protecting Yui as she vanished into a blue light.
Yui covered her eyes as a familiar blue light surrounded her, she'd been here before but it felt so different now. A different life, a different person. She had once stood here as a middle school student, waiting for her future to start. She had been alone, empty and bitter, hurting from the hardships she endured. Lied to by her supposed trusted warriors, turned against her best friend.
"It's been a long time my priestess" a familiar voice boomed
Yui pulled her hand away, allowing her gaze to fall upon the Azure dragon god she protected, the avatar for his holy power. He hadn't changed, though now she was wiser of what he was capable of. How he had nearly once been used to destroy the world she came from. She felt humbled knowing this holy being was the same creature she served as an avatar "Seiryu… Seikun" she stammered. Once facing him with anger, hatred and resentment, she now faced him once again with love, compassion and hope.
"You have summoned my holy power, you may use it three times in the form of a wish"
Yui hesitated, she could use this power to protect Miaka, she could use it to send Taka back to where he came from. She had once made such a wish out of jealousy, feeling as though her best friend chose her lover over her, like she had been abandoned. But now she knew that Taka was the poison one, corrupting her best friend. Separating Miaka and Tamahome once again, only this time not out of spite but out of love, making sure he could never hurt her again. She gripped her hands into balled fists, holding her ground "I want to protect Miaka, I want to protect my best friend, to condemn the person who caused her such pain" she growled fiercely. She wanted to sever Taka from her best friends life, erase any proof of his existence so he could never hurt her again.
Seiryu gazed at her curiously, no longer was she the same bitter lonely soul he had once met, the same lost girl who harboured sadness in her heart which nearly consumed her. But a pure minded person, a braver girl who had been healed and wished to use her power for good. He could feel her earnest heart, the same love she felt for her best friend coursing through her. He nodded, raising out his hand for her to take, forming their bargain.
Yui swallowed, she remembered the first time how much it hurt, how tired she was afterwards. The feeling of her soul being ripped to pieces, the feeling of a foreign celestial energy filling her body. This power didn't come without sacrifice but now she was older and wiser, able to appreciate the weight. She raised her hand nervously, placing her palm towards Seiryu, Seiryu's form vanishing into a blue energy ball as his power entered her body. Yui screamed in pain as she felt it enter her, the potency of celestial energy channeled through her. It felt as though she was being ripped apart, the heavens entering her, the power of the gods.
Yui collapsed onto the couch with exhaustion, the same fatigue she experienced the first time, her entire body trembling, a heavy sigh escaped her lips as she felt all of her energy sapped from her. The energy of Seiryu coursing through her body, only this time she accepted it, no hatred or loneliness only love. She wouldn't let the scales appear, she wouldn't let Seiryu devour her. She would use this power to protect her best friend, use it against Taka and make sure he paid for the pain he caused Miaka.
Miaka rushed to Yui's side, hugging her tightly "Yui? Yui-chan?" she pleaded, she remembered this feeling, this same pain, like you were being eaten from the inside out. All the priestesses knew the power of the deity they summoned came with a consequence, those that relied on them knew the sacrifice they were making. A human vessel using the holy power of a celestial being, remembering the power of the gods could cost you your life. Takiko Okuda had been consumed by her own beast god, despite her pure heart her loneliness had consumed her, leading to her demise. Suzuno Osugi had managed to evade this somehow and lived a long and healthy life, even having a family of her own. Yui had nearly been consumed due to her loneliness, her trauma and pain, thanks to Nakago. Miaka had nearly been consumed, Suzaku's wings sprouting from her back, but she fought on and managed to evade it. This was the cost of the holy power granted.
Yui rested upon Miaka's chest, breathing slowly as she tried to calm herself, somehow being closer to her helped ease her, comfort her. Miaka was her safe place, she couldn't give up on her now. "I… I'm ok… it's… it's been a long time is all. I forgot how exhausting this was" she stammered. Miaka had suffered enough, she had felt the same loneliness she once had. It would pass, this pain was temporary, she just needed to regain her strength before they made their next move.
"You can do it Yui, you're stronger now, you're away from that place, you have Tetsuya" Miaka soothed. Nakago couldn't corrupt her anymore, he was gone, he could never hurt her again. All of her warriors were gone and couldn't influence her anymore. She was out of the world of the book, she was safe and she had freedom. She had healed from the pain of her past, she had Tetsuya who would do anything to protect her. She would always be by Yui's side come hell or high water, the same way Yui never gave up on her now, she needed to support her. She didn't need to worry about the past anymore, it was behind them.
Yui smiled, Miaka had faced much worse than this, watching all of her warriors die for her sake. Feeling as isolated and trapped as she once had by a man who was supposed to protect her. "I'm doing this for you stupid. If it means I can protect you this time, I can endure it" she pressed. She had stepped back into the past she tried to forget, summoning a power she thought she would never need again. Miaka needed her, she had nobody else who could protect her. Miaka's expression formed into sadness and love, her best friend was reliving her pain, summoning her beast god to protect her. A power once used against her by Nakago so he could become a god himself. "I… I just need some rest… before I… before I make my wishes" Yui insisted, she felt exhausted, fatigued, frightened. Once she had recovered she would be in a clearer state of mind.
Tetsuya got to his feet, wrapping an arm around Yui's shoulder, "I'll take her to bed, I'll make sure she's safe" Tetsuya reassured Miaka. He knew Yui would be out for a long period of time, her body adjusting to Seiryu's power and soothing herself. Finding the courage within herself, repressing and rejecting any negative influence.
Miaka nodded, wrapping her arms around Yui, she couldn't thank her enough, there were no words that could convey her appreciation enough. She didn't know if Suzaku could hear her, what would happen if she tried to use her own beast god. Due to the depressed and miserable state Taka had left her in, she could instead fall into Yui's fate and be consumed by Suzaku instead. Yui was the most responsible person, she had healed and she would be the one to redeem herself and protect her this time. Her best friend, someone she loved more than anyone else in the world "Thank you Yui-chan" she whispered.
Miaka hunched up on the couch, hugging herself as Tetsuya took Yui to bed to rest, given the strain this took on their bodies, she could be out for hours, days even. The worst of it was over, the spell had been cast and Seiryu had been granted access to their world once more. However, instead of destroying their city, it would be used against Taka. She couldn't ignore the gnawing concern that filled her, assuming the worst and worrying about Yui's wellbeing. Yui was putting her physical and mental wellbeing at risk, the pain of harbouring celestial power within herself, how her mentality could influence the effects it would have. If she wavered, doubted herself or became corrupt Seiryu could consume her.
Noriko placed her hand upon Miaka's shoulder to reassure her "She'll be ok Miaka" she soothed. Yui was stronger than she was back then, she had healed and become a happier person. She found belonging, she found love among the people closest to her and Tetsuya. She was no longer chained by the scars of her past, she had become her own hero and found courage. She made this decision of her own free will, nobody coerced her into making this choice.
Miaka shifted "I… I know… it's just… we're human, summoning the beast gods is different for us. It's a massive sacrifice and risk, ripping apart our souls and bodies. We could lose our lives over this, Takiko did when she summoned her god" she trailed off. She had heard about what happened to the past priestesses, how their own sadness and negative emotions had influenced them. She hated the idea of losing Yui, her best friend, the person closest to her. They shared a bond that went beyond just being priestesses, but childhood friends. Takiko had been alone even before she became priestess, losing her mother, neglected and unwanted by her own father. The loneliness she felt within the book never left her even after she met her warriors and grew from the past. She had been the bravest priestess to date, but her situation vastly differed from them. Yui could still suffer in some way, she was far from perfect, what if something went wrong?
"We won't let that happen Miaka, we're more prepared than they were. We have experience, we'll make sure you both are protected" Keisuke soothed. He would make sure they rested, ate well, took care of themselves and were always supported. If they were overwhelmed, fatigued or suffering in some way he would be sure they took a rest. He would make sure that Yui was stable, that she knew what she was getting into. The same way they would assure Miaka was protected. Miaka nodded, she couldn't lose Yui, not again, thinking of how close she came the first time scared her. Yui had been so defeated she was ready to allow Seiryu to devour her as a sacrifice. She knew Yui was using her beast gods power to get revenge on how Taka had mistreated her.
"You need rest too sweetie, you've had a hell of a day. Taka appearing at your new job and harassing you like that. Now this, your anxiety is going to be through the roof. You need to sleep" Noriko reminded her. Miaka was exhausted and anxious, she still hadn't had time to process anything and was on edge. She'd gone from positive energy to negative, Taka harassing her in public and humiliating her. She would be frightened of him following her, of what would happen if and when he was released. Taka would be handled eventually and without his memories or celestial powers, he didn't stand a chance. She couldn't keep pushing herself, not when she'd made so much progress to recover and heal.
Keisuke nodded, Miaka had been on edge ever since Taka had harassed her. She had finally been healing, coming out of her shell and now she had regressed again. None of this was her fault, she just had to keep pushing forward. "She's right Miaka, you haven't stopped. You need sleep as much as anyone"
"But… Yui-chan…" she protested, what if she had a nightmare, what if she called out for help and she wasn't there? She didn't want to leave Yui alone when she may need her. Yui had helped her get her life back, to reclaim a job, to find a roof over her head albeit temporarily until she found her own place. She owed her returned freedom to Yui, for not giving up on her. Now she was using Seiryu's power to get revenge on the man who had broken her spirit, broken her heart and hurt her.
"Tetsuya is with her and he'll let us know if anything changes, she's in good hands" Noriko reminded her
"If he gets too tired I'll take over watching her" Keisuke smiled, Tetsuya was at stubborn as he was, he would watch over Yui while she slept until he couldn't keep his eyes open. When that happened he would take over for him so Tetsuya would get some rest. They would all take shifts.
Miaka softened, but she couldn't sleep alone anymore, thanks to Taka he'd ruined that for her. Watching the shadows for movement, sleeping in an empty bed waiting for companionship that never came. Getting used to her own company despite the gnawing need for comfort. How touch starved she had become for affection, reassurance and companionship. Realising she was drowning in the loneliness, knowing she was ignored and neglected by Taka. She squeezed Noriko's hand, gazing at her hopefully "Will you…. Can you… stay with me?" She begged.
Noriko softened, the pleading look in Miaka's eyes, the hesitation of being rejected, thinking about how Taka had neglected her in favour of his job so many times. Miaka was a human being, vulnerable, prone to weakness, failures and flaws. There were days where she would need reassurance, affection, validation and support. None of those things Taka had given her, just avoiding and neglecting her. She would hold Miaka as much as she needed, show her all the affection and attention she had needed in the past. Reminding her of how loved she was. "Of course honey" she reassured her.
Noriko wrapped her arms around Miaka protectively, holding her close to her chest, feeling her heartbeat, the rise and fall of her chest. Stroking her hair soothingly, easing her into sleep. She'd forgotten how soft Miaka was, how she smelled so nice and how her hair tickled her cheeks. Miaka felt smaller than she had before, her broken spirit caused by Taka's influence. This girl had summoned an entire god at the age of fifteen, protected and guided an entire nation. A responsibility placed upon her shoulders in which she had no choice in. The love she felt for Miaka as a priestess, as a woman, there was nothing that could ever replace that feeling.
Noriko watched her sleep, content and calmed by Miaka's presence, reminding herself of how much she had missed her after Ashitare killed her. How much she had missed her best friend, how much she had missed her priestess. The bond they shared that made them so close to begin with. Her lips, soft, delicate, drawing her in with every soft snore she made, how much Miaka trusted her and how she would give her life again to protect her. The love she felt for Miaka burning brightly, rekindling the desire she felt for her, the blossoming affection. The desire to lean forward and kiss her, the rise and fall of her chest as she slept, her shirt straining over her breasts. The feel of her curves as her arms wrapped around Miaka, the way their legs intertwined and tangled. How safe this felt, how perfect this felt, finally the two of them alone, where Taka couldn't reach Miaka and could never come between them again. The way Miaka relaxed around her, trusted her, sleeping like a baby. She was exhausted. They finally had the power to cast aside Taka, to imprison him within the pages of the book. To punish him for his mistreatment of their beloved priestess, for his cruelty and neglect of her. He would never be able to see Miaka again, he would never be able to touch her again, they wouldn't let him come near her. He couldn't use the power of Suzaku, all of his powers had been stripped of him along with his memories. Only Miaka had that power, she was blessed with the holy power of the southern beast god. She was within her arms once more where she belonged, before she had been killed, able to tell Miaka the depth of her feelings. How much she cared for her, how much she loved her and how far she would go to protect her. Her heart aching with love for her priestess, hoping they would never be separated again, to remain a part of Miaka's life. Her eyes burned with love, desire pooling behind her eyes, wishing she knew how special she was to those who adored her. She kissed Miaka's sleeping forehead tenderly, the latter sighing sleepily at the gesture. "Aishiteru Yo Miaka, in every universe" she whispered, her heart would always belong to her priestess.
