Ch. 18: The Prodigal Child of London

"They will look for the woman," Dorian spoke.

An older man in a white lab coat smirked at Dorian then walked pass him to grab a syringe. He then looked back to Mina who was restrained to a laboratory table. He twisted her wrist enough then tapped on her arm to reveal a vein. "Hold still, Miss Harker. This shouldn't hurt a bit," the older man informed nonchalantly.

"Vladimir will kill you," Mina hissed, showing her fangs.

There was a low chuckle. "He can try, and I will survive like I have for the last couple of hundred of years." The needle touched the skin and Mina snarled but again, this man didn't flinch at Mina's snarl, drew a large vial of dark red blood. "A sire of Dracula. The venom of vampire. The blood that once was human and now…a monster."

Mina snarled once more while the man stood up from the ground, walking toward a set of vials intricately placed. He placed the needle into a cork that connected to a beaker filled with a bluish liquid. As the two mixed, there was a low hiss prompting the scientist to turn on the flame and watch the mixture travel through some other tubes. As it traveled, the man prepared a small test cup with another mixture that was a dark red.

When the first couple of drops came from the other mixture, the two touched prompting the man to mix the new mixture. The dark red and purplish one mixed to create a dark purple liquid; he observed the liquid then placed it aside. He opened a leather-bound book and wrote in it while Dorian rolled his eyes, "Are you done?"

"Patience, Dorian," the man told.

"Those idiots will be coming to interfere, Victor! I will not have our plan be ruined," Dorian yelled, feeling the frustration and pressure of the situation come to him.

Victor turned and looked at Dorian. He walked over and placed both of his hands on Dorian's shoulders and replied, "I understand the dire importance of our plan but, it takes time which we do have."

"How?"

Victor looked back at the items spread on his table. They almost have everything; they just needed two more pieces and the experiment would be complete. It would be complete.

"They don't know what is coming for them."

Jane and Maura were dead asleep to the world when Jane felt a small nudge of her shoulder. Her eyes opened to see Dani standing over them slightly and whispered softly, "We just landed."

Jane nodded in acknowledgement and stretched out like a cat then felt Maura moving. "Hey," Jane greeted softly.

"Morning Jane," Maura greeted back then gave Jane a quick kiss on her lips.

"I'm sorry I woke you up."

"I rather you do because you're not alone anymore."

Jane gave a small smile, touching Maura's cheek before they heard a whistle. They looked up to see Frankie who was holding his duffle. "I hate to break this up," he started, prompting Jane to roll her eyes, "our ride is here."

The two women nodded to Frankie and started to walk off the jet to see Danielle looking out to the distance. Jane approached, taking a stand next to her, and asked, "A lot changed?"

Danielle nodded with her eyes still toward the far distance, her thoughts seemed to almost be far from the present. She cleared her throat and walked to the car, getting in on the passenger side of the vehicle. Everyone else filed in with Frankie whispering, "Does the Nightfall Unit even have contacts in London still?"

"Despite leaving our European routes, we establish contacts in country," Adam replied.

"So where are we going then," Frost asked as the unknown driver turned on the engine.

"Safe house outside Wandsworth," Dani answered.

Maura gave a questioning expression, "Isn't that exposing Adam though?"

Adam gave Maura a small pat of the hand in appreciation and assured, "It's abandoned enough that no one would want to touch it, not even any squatters."

Jane and Maura gave confused expression but shrugged as they began to drive to London.

As they drove, London started to come into sight, Jane asked Dani, "Anything look familiar?"

Dani shook her head, "Some buildings kept the structure but what was there is gone. Homes that used to belong to prominent owners and now, they are shopping spots."

"Where did you live," Regina inquired, resting her head on Dani's shoulder.

"In Kensington," Dani answered, "and no, Robert Louis Stevenson's address did not use my actual address in the book. He just grabbed a random address."

"That's how your brother created the Hyde name," Maura realized, her mind forming the map of London in her mind.

The detective nodded; her eyes still directed to the outside world. It felt like a completely different and what was there ceased to exist except in some dust record or in Dani's ancient memory. "Sweetheart," Dani snapped back from her trance and looked at Regina who rubbed her hand gently. "Jane asked you something.'

"Who is our contact here in London?"

"Arthur Holmwood's four times over great grandnephew."

"Wait, how is that even possible," Adam questioned.

Korsak raised a curious brow, "What's wrong with being in contact with this Arthur Holmwood?"

"Holmwood was one of Dracula's hunters with Van Helsing. He knew Mina and 'killed' Dracula," Dani explained. "When it was discovered that Dracula survived, he was weak, and Mina divorced Jonathan Harker. So, Van Helsing made a treaty for Dracula to never hunt again, and Van Helsing would never hunt him again. Mina and Dracula eloped eventually. Since the original hunters signed and Dracula kept his word. When he immigrated to the United States and Nightfall was being established, Van Helsing established contacts out in Europe."

"That's just…wow," Frost whistled at the sound of everything.

"Looks like we're here," Nina announced as the car stopped suddenly.

Everyone stepped out of the car and gazed at an ordinary alleyway. "There's no house," Frankie remarked.

Jane rolled her eyes while Dani shook her head, pulling out her phone briefly. Maura watched as her eyes darted across the screen then began to walk. Everyone looked at Jane except Regina and Adam who immediately followed; "I guess we follow," Jane suggested.

They followed the three into the alleyway then noticed a brick wall. Dani raised her hand, knocking on different bricks and suddenly, the bricks formed into a door then it opened. "That was kind of cool," Nina whispered to Frost.

Frost nodded in agreement then his jaw dropped at the size of the safehouse.

It was a giant mansion of three stories high and it stood in an isolated field. There was no one in sight and for a moment, Maura tried to understand how it was even possible to be so faraway so quickly. That is until she remembered that logic didn't win in situations involving the supernatural world.

They approached the gated fence to see that it was open, prompting Dani to push it open. "You sure that's a good idea," Korsak asked wry.

"We should expect it to be empty for the sake of being hidden. Also, we are far from London." Dani gestured her arm behind her and everyone awed at the sight of London so far from them suddenly.

"How," Nina asked.

"Teleportation spell," Regina answered. "It's a spell used back in Boston for hiding the rooms like the Council Hall entrance. However, a whole plot of land is a sign that this was a powerful witch."

"Okay. Powerful witch and magic equals safety. Good to know."

"Shouldn't Holmwood's four or something times great nephew greet us," Jane questioned.

"Technically," everyone looked at the door to see a tall dirty blonde male in a dressed white button with an open dress vest tuck into his dress pants, "I would greet you at the gate, but I figured that I needed to monitor for any sign of Miss Harker." The young man stepped off the porch and walked toward the group, placing his hand out, "Lord Darnell, it's good to see you."

"Detective Stevenson," Lord Darnell greeted back with a handshake. "Clayton informed me about your situation, and I can report at the moment that there has been no sign of Dorian Gray."

"That's not a good thing," Jane hummed.

"However," Lord Darnell cut in, "there has been a sighting of the known demon Mephistopheles."

Adam raised a scarred eyebrow, "Why would Mephis be here? He stays close to where Faust is."

"So that means Faust is here," Frost assumed.

Regina looked at Dani. "Faust shouldn't know where we were going."

"There are only two ways that Mephis leaves Faust and they both involve death," Dani retorted. "Darnell, I assume that the phone is in parlor?"

"Straight ahead, Detective." Adam proceeded to follow prompting, Lord Darnell to turn back to his other guests. "Welcome everyone, I shall give you the tour of the mansion."

"This place is very beautiful," Maura complimented, staring at the architecture of the home.

"It used to belong to someone in our family but with a help of a couple witches, we have hidden this safehouse away from the world and restored it to its original form." He then gestured for everyone to enter the house.

Everyone entered to the somewhat narrow hallway to see that down the hall was the open door with Adam standing at the doorway. "As you can see by Mister…Adam's position, that will be the parlor. We have a kitchen, dining room, library, and two bedrooms on the main floor. Upstairs are the other bedrooms with their adjoining baths and yes, the tubs are in the room as per custom of the time of the house. Finally, in the basement level is the armory, billiard room, and laboratory," their host explained.

"An armory," Jane questioned.

"It was a necessary addition." They then heard some footsteps, prompting Maura and Jane to look up to see Dani and Adam approaching.

Jane walked over, "Any word?"

"Apparently, no one has seen Faust since Dani's arrest," Adam informed the group. "We have units going over for a wellness check."

Fuck, Jane thought and exchanged a sympathetic look to Dani who let out a sigh.

A worry silence fell upon them. Lord Darnell cleared his throat, "Well…I believe that you all had a long evening of travel. I will show you to your rooms." He walked to the halls and gestured toward the bedroom near the stairs, "Anybody wish to be in the bedroom near the kitchen?"

"Dibs," Frankie sped walked to room.

Nina shook her head, "You sang music to his ears." She then followed her fiancé into the room, leaving the rest to head upstairs.

On the upper floor, Lord Darnell guided everyone to their rooms with Maura and Jane sharing one of the main master bedrooms and Dani with Regina shared the other room next door. Korsak, Frost, and Adam took different rooms within the upper floor then Darnell handed the two sets to Jane and Dani.

Darnell left the room, informing them that he was a phone call away. Taking the opportunity, Maura entered the bedroom that she and Jane were sharing. She took in the sight of the beautiful sky-blue wallpaper of the bedroom; she felt that she teleported to another time, and she appreciated the architecture despite the circumstances. Somehow the suitcases were placed in their rooms next to the large four poster bed with dark red sheets and black curtains.

God to see Jane's body against those sheets, Maura's mind wandered.

"Not the time," Maura composed herself, feeling the blush rush up her cheeks. She bit her lip then looked around more to see the panel folding room divider with beautiful Japanese art and behind the panel was a beautiful tub. After taking in the room, she heard footsteps and turned to see Jane entering the room.

"Wow, this is beautiful," Jane stated.

"I agree and if this was not an investigation, I would definitely enjoy this as a vacation home," Maura informed her significant other.

Jane smirked, "A vacation home? You mean explore London as you tell me everything about it."

"Or," Maura sauntered over and leaned in, whispering, "it would be more of a romantic escapade involving either of us without any clothing attire." As Maura spoke these words, Jane's smirk disappeared, and a beautiful red hue adorned on her cheeks. The doctor gave a cheeky smile then placed a small kiss on Jane's neck before attempting to walk away.

Jane snapped from her trance, grabbing by the hand, and pulling her gently back toward her. Maura was caught off guard as Jane wrapped her arm around Maura's waist and leaned in to give Maura an ardent kiss. The doctor wrapped her arms around Jane's shoulder, holding onto the detective and returning the kiss back.

Lips glided over Maura's, wandering to Maura's cheeks and down to Maura's neck. Scarred hands ran down the back of the silk shirt edging toward the waistline. A mulling sound escape Maura's lips, prompting a smirk to emerge on Jane's lips. The detective then pulled away slightly, moving the trail of kisses back to Maura's lips. "You shouldn't be teasing, Doctor Isles," Jane breathed against Maura's lips, still slipping small pecks.

"It's not teasing," Maura replied.

"It is."

"Janie, really?" Both of their heads snapped over to see Frankie shielding his eyes, "Get a room!"

"I am in the room, ass," Jane argued, releasing Maura's waist.

"Well, close the door then!"

Jane sighed and rolled her eyes, "Isn't your room downstairs with Nina?"

"I was grabbing you guys to discuss about what we're going to do," Frankie gestured toward the staircase behind him.

"Okay, we'll be on our way."

"Uh huh," Frankie muttered to himself as he walked quickly down the stairs.

Jane huffed until she felt Maura's hand on her cheek. She turned her head, brushing her lips against the palm. "This is not over," Jane vowed, walking out of the door backwards.

"I don't expect anything else," Maura winked, turning away.

Down in the basement, Dani, with Adam's help, was placing photos of all the missing items from the Vault, Dorian's picture, and Mephis' picture, and finally, Dani wrote the name Frankenstein. "So, what's the breakdown," Frost inquired as he took a seat on one of the many couches in the billiard room.

"London has many places and obviously, they are here to locate my brother's journal," Dani explained.

"So, let's look for it," Korsak suggested.

"And…that's the problem," Dani argued. She took a seat on one of the billiard tables, "I don't remember much after my brother died, Hyde took over and I don't remember much from that night. Even Hyde doesn't remember either."

"Even your other half doesn't remember," Nina inquired. "They took over your body."

I don't remember much except the alcohol and blood. It smelled like smoke, Hyde remembered.

"Hyde only remembers alcohol, blood, and smoke," Dani explained.

Frankie gestured toward the board, "What's the point of looking for your brother's journal when they have all these items?"

"Based on what we know," Adam started, "Dorian and my creator are working together, and that Dorian wishes to break the corrupt system."

"He didn't seem to care about the system," Jane commented.

"And that's where our confusion comes in," Dani added. She gestured toward the board, "Without Van Helsing's files, we cannot really understand Dorian's motivations."

Hearing Van Helsing's name, Maura left the billiard room causing some confusion until she returned with a book in her hand. "Could this possibly help? It's a copy of Van Helsing's research journal that you gave to Doctor Crane."

"This could work. Would need to do some reading-"

"I can do that for you, Danielle," Nina volunteered. Dani handed the book over and Nina continued, "It will help advance my knowledge about the Supernatural community and also, I can download it for everyone to have my abbreviated notes."

"Thanks Nina."

"I can explain the Black Magic book," Regina informed. "In addition, we can discuss the Book of the Dead and its magic as well."

Dani raised an eyebrow, "You know the Book of the Dead?"

"To the extent that Mama Lorna taught me," Regina answered. "She explained that there are many types of magic that are connect throughout the universe; some that are light, neutral, and dark. The Book of the Dead is usually a book of neutrality but in the wrong hands…it can cause chaos."

"How," Korsak inquired.

"It is rumored that it can raise the dead," Regina answered.

"The dead," Maura awed.

"But does it bring it back the soul," Adam asked.

Regina shrugged. Jane gave a confused expression and asked, "Why do you ask about a soul, Adam?"

Adam gave an exhausted sigh, took a seat on the sofa, and rested his head against the sofa. "When I was first created, Frankenstein left his journal in his coat which I took when I ran away. In his research, he wrote about that it could be possible to reanimate the body through the means but, he argued that there was never a possibility that I could never have a soul."

"But you have one," Frankie pointed out.

"It's all based on perception, Francesco," Adam retorted softly. "You may believe that I have one but what is a soul? I'm made of different body parts, so does that make me several pieces of many souls?"

Dani touched Adam's shoulder, "You are just Adam, my friend. Someone that Elisabeth loved and to be able to love means you have a soul."

Suddenly, Adam felt a hand take his, prompting him to sit up to see Jane looking at him. "I agree with Dani on that," Jane added, taking a small glance at Maura. "If you're able to love, it shows you have a soul." Adam gave Jane a small smile, giving her hand a gentle pat.

"Well," Frankie stated then stood up, "I don't know about you guys but I'm starving and Darnell said there's a full fridge."

"And the moment is gone," Nina rolled her eyes. She then nudged Frankie, "Come on, you, I think we can make some dinner for everyone."

"Wait…but…"

"You interrupted the moment with your hunger. You might as well as you cook."

Korsak stood up, "I'll help."

"We can reconvene about everything later," Regina suggested.

Regina walked up the staircase, expecting Dani to be in the kitchen however, she noticed that Dani was gone. She then looked at Maura and asked softly, "Have you seen Dani?" Maura gestured toward the hallway to Jane exiting the front door. As the door closed behind the detective, Regina noticed Dani sitting on a rocking chair.

Standing on the porch together, Dani walked toward the verandah and took a seat in the rocking chair that sit there. She heard the door behind her make a clicking sound, prompting her to glance up to see Jane stepping out.

"Thought you were going to help with dinner," Dani asked.

"I thought you were also," Jane questioned back. The detective waited for a reply but instead, Dani kept looking out toward the horizon. Jane placed her hands in her pocket then approached, leaning against the railing. "He's dead, isn't he," Jane asked aloud.

"If he is, Faust will come back in another fifty years or so," Dani retorted. She pushed herself off the chair, "I should have been more vigilant."

"You and I should have," Jane corrected.

Oh, stop the pity party, Faust would have been dead either way, Hyde piped in annoyance.

"What do you mean," Dani questioned aloud. Suddenly, Jane watched as Dani's back leaned against the railing like herself and one of the eyes turned red, "I mean that Faustus always got himself in trouble. What's that new saying that the modern youth say, 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes.' It was inevitable."

"Hyde, even if it was inevitable, Faust did not deserve death because he helped us," Dani argued back.

Jane blinked, stepping forward to see that the other side of Dani's face was Dani's light brown eyes. "Okay, that's trippy," Jane commented.

"Danielle, we know that Mephis is here for other reasons. Logically, Mephis follows where death goes," Hyde spoke.

"But Faustus is…his charge," Jane tried to remember. "Mephis wouldn't kill him, correct?"

The side with the red eye snapped their fingers. "Look at Rizzoli here, Dani. Keeping track with our world and yes, Faustus is Mephistopheles' charge which means that Mephis is the whisperer in the dark."

"What?"

"It means that Mephis likes to whisper in your ear, makes you want to have that second drink," Dani explained. "He suggests that you should steal that nice wallet."

"Or kill the next person," Hyde added.

"Influence," Jane concluded. "But why come especially if Faust is not here in London? Is he here to help Dorian or Frankenstein?"

"Tipping the scales? Sounds like something that Mephistopheles could do. I wouldn't put it pass him."

Jane crossed her arms, "He's done this before?"

"Over the years that I've been alive, Mephis finds other people's lives to be fun to mess with. We found Faust for him and who knows who else knows about Faust but, that demon roaming is not a good sign," Dani explained.

"If Faust is alive, he's here in London."

"Has to be which prompts me to wonder why except he's still doing Dorian's work."

"Typical of that little jackal," Hyde added. "Something to ponder about though."

Suddenly, the red eye disappeared, and Dani rubbed the back of her neck. "That was new," Jane commented.

"It's better than a full transformation," Dani retorted.

Jane and her then faced fields, taking in the sunset. "What was it like here for you," Jane queried.

"Silence, at least until the train arrived or the sound of foghorn from the shipyard." Dani gestured toward a further distance, "Telegraph wires were around and if the telegraph wasn't working, you had to write a letter. Also, there were horses everywhere with carriages. It feels different though."

"I bet. Like you guys had tubs in your bedrooms," Jane questioned.

Dani smirked and stood up, "It had its perks, Detective Rizzoli."

Jane raised an eyebrow. "Experienced it, Stevenson?" Dani didn't reply, making a small shrug and headed back inside to join dinner.

RI

Dinner came and gone with everyone eventually, they began to work on understanding behind the motives of Dorian, Mephistopheles, and possibly Doctor Frankenstein showing up in London. There wasn't much news and even with a return phone call from Boston, Faust was still missing, prompting a search and Regina only scratched some of the surface of the Book of the Dead and the Black Magic Book.

Eventually, everyone decided to turn in for the night, feeling the effects of their flight finally. However, some decided to stay up later than others. Jane and Regina walked up together, wishing Jane goodnight. Regina then entered her shared bedroom to see that Dani was not in the room. She then noticed that the doors to the balcony was open, prompting her to walk over. She leaned against the doorway, watching Dani sitting on a chair with a sketchpad in her lap. "You know I've never truly seen your sketches," Regina informed.

Dani glanced over her shoulder then patted the spot next to her. Regina walked over and sat down as Dani handed the sketchbook. "My father thought it was ridiculous when I was younger. To be an artist," Dani started as Regina opened the sketchbook to see different sketches of everyone. Frankie and Nina were sitting together, Frost was laughing with Korsak, Adam was sitting alone at his desk with a book in hand, and finally, Jane and Maura sleeping with Jane laying her head against hers. Finally, Regina turned to the next page to see herself at the shop then another of her reading. She then paused at the sight of a sketch of Mama Lorna and her sitting with cups of teas in their hand.

"I remember this day," Regina touched the picture. "It was after a council meeting and Mama invited you to join us. You were so quiet, and I just remember you sipping your tea and writing in a journal."

"It was the first time for a long time that I felt compelled to sketch. To feel that need to seal the memory in a picture…it was the first time that I realized that I might felt more than friends." She took the notebook and continued, "I'm sorry that I couldn't save Mama."

Regina touched Dani's cheek, "You tried and that's all that matters. Yes, it hurts to lose her, but I have you still."

Dani leaned over, kissing Regina's forehead and assured, "That you do. You have me completely." Regina climbed gently into Dani's lap, cupping her cheeks and kissing Dani's lips softly. Dani smiled against the kiss, wrapping her arms around Regina's waist. Regina's hands began to move to the buttons of Dani's shirt. Suddenly, Dani's hands touched hers causing Regina to look up.

"Are you sure," Dani whispered.

Regina gave a sweet smile then a soft kiss on the lips. She then pulled back, their lips still touching as she answered, "I'm sure."

Jane walked up the staircase approaching the bedroom when she opened the door to see the Japanese partition up and hear soft humming.

"Maur," Jane called out.

"In the tub, Jane," Maura answered back.

Jane's stomach jumped to her throat, and she could hear throbbing in her ears. That partition was thin and separating her and Maura by mere inches; inches from touching that beautiful skin that hid behind the ridiculous but sexy dresses that Maura wore.

Was her hair tied in a messy bun? Are there bubbles covering things? I'm getting all sweaty. Is this what Dani meant about the tub having other uses. Is this foreplay?

"Jane?"

"Hmm," Jane muttered, slowly bringing herself back to reality or at least, from her wandering thoughts.

"Did you hear anything I said," Maura inquired. Jane watched as Maura's shadow showed that she was washing her arms.

Jane gulped, "I'm sorry, Maura. I sort of spaced out."

"I was just saying that I placed out your pajamas for yourself. If you head down the hallways, there's a small bathroom with a sink to clean your face," Maura explained. Jane's heart melted with the corners of her lips formed into a smile, prompting Jane to remove her blazer, and throwing it aside.

Quietly, she approached and pushed the divider aside to see a relaxed Maura covered in some bubbles. Jane took in the sight of Maura's hair tied back and the calm expression on her girlfriend's face. Sensing Jane's eyes, Maura hummed, "Aren't you going to get dressed in your pajamas?"

"We didn't finish our conversation from earlier," Jane said with a husky voice.

Maura opened her eyes, seeing Jane's dark eyes. Maura smirked at the sight and watched as Jane crouched beside the tub. "I believe you are correct, Detective," Maura retorted, moving herself toward where Jane was. The detective ran her hand along Maura's cheek with Maura turning her head to kiss the inside of Jane's palm.

Overwhelmed by the sight, Jane used her other hand to pull Maura closer by the back of her neck, capturing her lips passionately. Maura, unsure at first where to put her hands, cupped her cheek until Jane took Maura's arms, wrapping them around her shoulder. "Jane, your clothes," Maura gasped as Jane started to kiss down her neck.

"They are going to come off anyways, sweetheart."

"You're joining me for a bath," Maura moaned as Jane nipped her collarbone.

Jane pulled away from Maura and lifted her shirt off, revealing the tone abs and her black bra. Maura smiled, pulling Jane back to another kiss with Jane climbing into the tub with Maura giggling.
