Chapter 21
A/N: Okay…so lets recap for a second. Bella is the Alpha's imprint. She's graduated high school. She's opening a café with Kim. The Volturi is after her (they want her dead or changed). Edward has gone psycho. And she's pregnant. What more could go wrong? Moving on.
Sam POV
I couldn't believe how excited I was. Bella was pregnant with the first pack pups. I knew that she was scared. She was scared to tell Charlie. She was scared because of Edward. And she was scared because of the Volturi.
Bella and I were waiting for Charlie and Sue. They were joining us for dinner tonight so that we could tell Charlie that we were pregnant. Bella didn't want to wait. I could understand that. She been in the kitchen all afternoon preparing all of Charlie's favorite foods. I think that subconsciously she was hoping that it would soften him up. I knew otherwise. The moment he saw all of his favorite foods on the table he was going to know that something was up. I just hoped that he wasn't going to try and shoot me. Granted, it wouldn't kill but it would still hurt.
I heard him, the moment he pulled in the driveway. I could hear him and Sue talking in the driveway. He was already suspicious because Sue had asked him to come instead of Bella. This was going to be fun. I walked over to the fridge and grabbed Charlie a beer, ready to hand it to him when he walked in. Bella was getting the last of the food on the table when they walked in the door. Everyone greeted each other and I gave Charlie his beer before we all made our way to the table. "Bells, this is all of my favorites. Are you trying to butter me up?" Charlie said. Bella and I looked at each other. "Cause it's working."
We both sighed as everyone started fixing their plates. "So, Dad how's everything at the station?" Bella asked.
"Good. I had to break up a party at the stadium the other day. Mike and Tyler decided it would be a good idea to throw a farewell party for the ones going off to college." Charlie said.
"Well, I guess the idea was nice." I said.
"Yeah, they just didn't think about the part of the underage drinking and being on school property." Charlie said.
"I imagine not." Charlie added. "You uhh, had a visitor last night Bells."
This caused both her and I to look over at Charlie. "Who?" She asked.
"Edward. He was sitting on the porch when I got home." Charlie said.
Bella nodded. "He must have decided at the last second. Otherwise Alice would have seen it." She said.
"I guess." Charlie said. I knew that Bella was planning on calling Alice after Charlie left.
After dinner Bella had brought out the dessert that she'd make special for tonight with some coffee. Charlie sat there looking at the dessert. I knew he was processing. Bella had made a cake with the words 'we're pregnant' on it. "Is this for real?" He asked, his tone having changed from earlier.
He looked at both Bella and I. "Yeah. Apparently Sam's wolf didn't like the idea that I was on birth control and really wanted a pup." She said.
Sue and I both laughed at her words. "That's not funny." Charlie said, before he stood up from the table and walked outside.
Bella POV
I sighed. I stood up from the table and followed Charlie outside. He was sitting on the swing. I sat beside him. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me into his side. "We did try to be careful dad." I told him.
"I know Bells. It's just not easy hearing that your pregnant right as your life is beginning. Not to mention all of the vampire stuff that's going on." Charlie said.
"I know. And if I'm being honest…I'm more scared about what Edward will do than I am about the Volturi." I said.
"Why Edward?" He asked.
I shook my head. "You didn't see him that day in the school parking lot, Dad. His eyes were pitch black, meaning that he hadn't hunted recently. The only time that I'd ever seen him like that was when I first moved here. I know that he has something planned, but not even Alice knows what it is. I'm afraid that when he finds out that I'm pregnant that he might try something." I told him, knowing that Sam was probably listening.
"Bella, one thing I know for sure is that the pack isn't going to let anything happen to you. The other thing I know is that you and Sam are going to make wonderful parents." Charlie said.
I laid my head on his shoulder. "Thanks Dad." I said.
"I mean you're kind of already doing it with the pack, if you think about it." Charlie said.
After Charlie and Sue had left, I called Alice. I told her about Edward showing up at Charlie's the night before. She had confirmed what I'd already suspected. She hadn't seen anything. So once again we were back to waiting.
I guess Sam could tell how nervous I was getting. He'd decided that the two of us needed a getaway before anything else happened…especially with the café opening soon. Sam packed a couple of bags for us, loading everything into his truck. We were going camping for a couple of days. I had a feeling that something else was going on but I didn't feel like asking.
It was a little while later, that we were pulling up to a small cabin. "Where are we?" I asked him.
"The cabin used to belong to my grandfather and he left it to me when he died. I thought it would be nice to stay here for a bit." Sam said and I nodded.
I climbed out of the truck and took in my surroundings while Sam started taking everything inside. I was about to start making my way inside when I saw a flash of grey and silver. Paul and Leah. I rolled my eyes. I made my way inside to see Sam putting the food up. "I thought it was just going to be us." I said crossing my arms.
He looked up at me. "It is." He said.
I shook my head. "I just saw Paul and Leah running through the trees." I told him.
Sam closed the refrigerator and leaned against the counter. He rubbed his hand over his face. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry. We think that Edward is going to come after you." Sam said.
"Okay so we're making it easier to get to me? What the hell, Sam!" I started yelling.
"NO!" He said in his Alpha timbre. "We're setting a trap. The Cullen's are on the other side of the woods and Paul and Leah are sticking to this side. We think if we can give him enough of a gap that we can catch him before he can do any harm." Sam said.
"I'm not happy about this." I said, making my way towards what I assumed was the bedroom and slammed the door.
Sam POV
Bella definitely wasn't happy. After she'd slammed the bedroom door, I finished unloading the truck and putting everything away before I headed outside to check in with Paul. When I walked outside, I walked around the side of the house and whistled. A few minutes later, Paul came walking through the woods with his shorts on. "How's it look?" I asked him.
"Haven't picked up his scent yet." Paul said. I nodded. "Everything okay in there?" He asked. I raised an eyebrow at him. "Sounded like she was pretty pissed. I mean, you never use your Alpha voice towards her." I was upset. I knew that I shouldn't be, he was just concerned.
I nodded. "Yeah when she got out of the truck, she saw you and Leah running through the woods. She got pissed because we didn't tell her what was going on." I said. Paul nodded. "Let me know when you pick up his. I'll need to tell her the other part of the plan." I said, turning around and going back in the house.
After almost two days, there still hadn't been any sign of him. So we decided to improvise. We'd decided to have Bella walk in the clearing that was nearby that way she'd be leaving her scent and he could pick it up. We weren't far from her. There were six pairs of eyes on her at all times just in case he chose this moment to make his appearance. We were just about to call it a day when all of a sudden I smelled him. I told everyone not to move. I wanted to see what would happen, knowing that one of us could get to her quickly.
Bella POV
"Edward." I tried to say calmly.
"Bella. You've been hard to find. Let alone get you separated from them." Edward said.
"Their very protective." I said.
"How'd you get away?" He asked me.
I knew that I had to lie to him. Just like I knew that Sam was watching me. "Sam and I are staying in his grandfather's cabin nearby for a break. He decided to check in with the pack since their all back at La Push…thought I'd take a walk." I said and he nodded. I looked at his for the first time and realized that they were red. "Oh Edward." I said.
He hung his head. "I couldn't help it. I knew that I needed to be strong, if I was going to be able to protect you from Aro." Edward said.
"Edward, you should go see Carlisle. He can help you." I said.
He shook his head. "No. He'll be ashamed of me." He said looking back up. "We have to get out of here Bella. The Volturi are coming." He said.
"What are you talking about?" I asked him.
"Someone I know on the guard, called. Said that Aro has been planning very carefully. He's coming to destroy everyone. The coven, the pack, the reservation, and Forks. He's coming to kill everyone." Edward said. I guess that was when he smelled it. "Bella, you don't smell like you. You smell different. I mean, you smell more wet dog than you do…you." He said.
I knew that it had only been a matter of time. "Edward…" I tried to say.
The pack must have been getting closer cause Edward started looking around. "He defiled you. He's impregnated you with one of them." Edward snarled.
Everything after that happened so quick. Edward grabbed my wrist and spun me around so that I was behind him. The pack and three of the Cullen's quickly enclosed on us. My wolves were growling at him. "Edward it doesn't have to be like this. Just let me go." I tried to tell him.
Sam and Paul were inching closer to him. I didn't see Leah anywhere. I assumed that she was probably somewhere behind me, ready to grab me as soon as Edward let go of me. The closer that Sam and Paul got the tighter Edward's grip on me got. "I'm taking her away from here." Edward said. I could tell that he was trying to read their thoughts. "Then so be it." He said, simultaneously letting go and he took off running with the boys following.
"Bells…" I turned around and saw Leah standing there. "We have to get out of here." She said and I nodded. She quickly picked me up and ran towards the cabin. When we were inside she put me down on the floor. "Stay in here. I'll be outside, but whatever you do stay inside." She told me and I nodded. And with that she walked outside.
I started by trying to sit on the couch and read a book. That quickly failed. So then I decided to clean the cabin, if only just to distract me from what was going on nearby. After I'd cleaned, I still hadn't seen anyone so I started pacing. I knew that it wasn't good but I didn't know what else to do. I'd tried looking out the window a couple of times but all I saw was Leah laying on the ground in front of the cabin.
I'd ended up laying on the couch and I guessed that I'd dozed off because when I woke up my head was laying in Sam's lap and he was running his fingers through my hair. "How was your nap?" He asked me.
"Good. I think I worked myself into exhaustion." I said.
"I know. I could feel your panic and anxiety." Sam said.
I nodded from my place in his lap. "Is it over?" I asked, not really sure if I really wanted to know.
"Yeah. It's over. Carlisle was exactly thrilled by the outcome but it had to be done." Sam said.
"I know. He broke the treaty Sam." I told him.
"What are you talking about?" Sam asked.
"When I looked at Edward's eyes, they were red. He'd fed on a human recently. And that's not the only thing. He said that he heard from a contact in Italy that Aro is plotting. He's planning on bringing the entire guard here. He's coming to kill everyone. The Cullen's, the pack, the entire reservation and everyone in Forks." I said.
He kept stroking my hair. "It's going to be okay. We aren't going to let them hurt anyone, okay. Just rest. You need your rest." Sam said.
