Chapter 6: Knights of Gold and Silver
Story Start.
Tarnished gathered outside Stormveil, men and women stood amazed at the sight of the once-ruined castle of Godrick the Grafted. They remained outside the massive gate of the castle, past the bridge, as the portcullis was closed after Naruto's clone brought Irina and Edgar.
Behind the portcullis, the Tarnished that gathered witnessed the Tree Sentinel approach them, and with no surprise, they immediately went on guard, and one even drew a katana, all because many of them knew that this Tree Sentinel was supposed to be trotting the hills of Limgrave.
"Stand down, Kin." They heard a voice from behind the Tree Sentinel, and when the Sentinel stood aside, they finally focused on the one they'd heard so much about in a short amount of time.
Naruto strode confidently but with a subdued presence, and all could see the dim glow of the Great Rune beneath his chest, but he no longer wore his old clothes, nor was his white cloak anywhere to be seen.
No, he wore armour now, curated explicitly for him by the Stargazer for specific uses, such as ceremonial, but could easily be used in combat.
It was gold and silver, easily noticed by everyone are the embossed metal plates throughout, even in the laminated multiple sheets of metal riveted together, and beneath, leather and chainmail acted as inner protection. However, the surcoat above it all took their eyes the most, and it depicted the sigil now flown by the banners and pennants of the castle, as well as the cape that he now wore.
The Tarnished saw his face as he went close to the portcullis, and his countenance was solemn, or so many thought.
"What brings you Tarnished here?" he asked one Tarnished, because her appearance took him by surprise at first, but he showed none of it, though he was curious as to why this Tarnished wore and wielded the armour and weapons of a samurai.
She removed her helmet and freed her raven black braided hair, tucked on one side behind her left ear. Her grey eyes only enhanced her beautiful appearance, not to mention a beauty mark on the left side of her chin, and she did not look like someone who would be a seasoned warrior, yet her bearing showed that she was a strong person.
Somehow, Naruto felt she was in deep shock when she saw his face, but he put that aside as the woman opened her mouth.
"… I… no, we did not come here together," she said as she glanced at the other dozen or so Tarnished that gathered outside the gate.
"When the word of Godrick's death and the claiming of his Great Rune, I'm just one of the many that came to see who had conquered Stormveil…" continued the woman, then she glanced upwards to the remade castle walls.
"… and transformed the decrepit castle into… this beautiful place."
"Hmm," Naruto hummed as he turned his eyes towards the other Tarnished, and he spied a man in a white mask among them.
"… poor Roderika mentioned someone in a white mask that told her group to go to Stormveil…" he heard Kaguya's voice within his mind, and new thoughts formed within him, but the words of the Tarnished woman interrupted his thoughts.
"... the roads have become dangerous, the Night's Calvary have increased their intensity in hunting down Tarnished..." she told him, and it raised eyebrows.
"... cower in fear of the night..." muttered Naruto, and the Tarnished who heard him were surprised as they knew those words.
"The Fell Omen parted those words to me when I defeated him," stated the new lord of Stormveil as the Tarnished whispered with one another. "I see... so these Night's Calvary work for him."
"I do not doubt they are increasing their hunts after you removed their leader from Limgrave," whispered Kaguya while the tailed beasts grunted in agreement.
"Perhaps it is wise to welcome these Tarnished inside; besides, a lord requires servants, or in this case, soldiers."
Naruto did not reply to the ancient Ōtsutsuki; instead, he turned his gaze back to the Samurai. "Why come here instead of the Roundtable Hold?"
"The road is long and dangerous, my lord," replied another Tarnished man in knightly armour with weapons to show for it.
"Recusants and Bloody Fingers endanger the way for us; we seek only shelter within your impregnable walls, especially most of us without the guidance of grace and maidenless," concluded the knight, and many vocally agreed, even the Samurai in front of him.
Naruto was about to order one of Edgar's men to open the portcullis until a figure pushed through the Tarnished, his hands raised as he called out to him.
"Excuse me, good sir! My name is Kenneth Haight, a noble of these lands."
Aurelius stood near a rampart, above where Naruto was, and beside him, the Crucible Knight whom he had defeated.
"... what do you think of my work?" asked the Stargazer, his gaze traversed over Limgrave.
"Why are you doing this?" quietly asked the Crucible Knight, and despite the face being obscured, the voice sounded feminine.
"It was- no, it is my job to do so," replied the old man as he quickly corrected himself and faced the knight. "And I offered a new path to you, which I aim to offer to the others of your ranks, especially Ordovis and Siluria."
The Knight tensed at those names, their leaders, powerful commanders of the first Elden Lord, but it was in the past, and like many others of her ranks, far away, scattered to places unknown.
Aurelius interrupted her thoughts as he continued, "Though, I doubt those two would accept readily, knowing where they are at this moment."
"Not to mention the others who have sought new allegiances, like you with Godrick and that one who joined the Recusants in the Volcano Manor at Mount Gelmir."
Aurelius sighed as he watched the Tarnished that gathered by the main gate slowly enter the castle as the portcullis was raised, though he spied one in a white mask and another in an iron kasa. With the knowledge he possessed, he already knew who those two were.
But he paid them no attention as he returned his gaze to the silent Crucible Knight.
"By your armour and weapon, you were under Ordovis' command before Godfrey was hounded from Leyndell. The same as that one locked in the nearby evergaol," he stated, and his confirmation came from a silent nod from the knight, but she was thoroughly surprised.
"… how do you know these things?" she asked, and Aurelius smiled at first before he answered.
"I studied from a place far away from these lands… now, what is your name?"
Silence reigned as they heard the portcullis shut once more, and for a few more moments, the knight remained silent until she spoke one more.
"Katia."
Her response made Aurelius chuckle to himself, "Ah, the Lord truly has a habit of creating coincidences, even in different worlds… let me guess, those of you under Ordovis are named Hirnantia, Sandbia, Dapingia, Floia, Tremadocia, and so forth?"
"How did you-!?"
A raised hand stopped Katia from continuing her response.
"I studied, Katia, that is all that you need to know about that, for now at least," he said, then he hesitated to say whatever would come next as a long pause came from him.
"… I called Naruto the Lord of Gold and Silver," opened Aurelius as he turned his eyes away from Katia. "… indeed, he is coming to terms with that, but since I love the symbolism in things, I wanted to give him two groups of knights, one of gold and another of silver."
The implication Aurelius made did not need to leave his mouth, as Katia knew what he implied, and she had already seen the Tree Sentinel, Kin, whom Naruto had taken along with him, for reasons unknown to her.
"… you want us to discard bronze for silver?"
The Stargazer was careful in his reply; his words measured as ever. "No… rather, I want to make out of your bronze, glistening silver, like the fairest full moon during the brightest of the nights. To match that of the ever-radiant sun, burning brighter than the Erdtree at the brightest day."
The day was long, the winds were calm, the lands stood at the edge of a knife, and the Erdtree stood silently above it all. Melina once again found her lone eye watching the alloyed gold of the tree as she tried to discern her purpose, but, by chance, her gaze turned downwards, and she was surprised to see many Tarnished enter Stormveil, with Naruto at their forefront.
Her eye turned to one Tarnished, and a feeling of strange nostalgia settled in within her. It was a very familiar feeling, yet discontent, dislike, and anger swirled within her as she watched that one Tarnished, but she did not understand why it was the case.
She warranted a special examination of that mixed feelings; however, she set them aside for the moment as she watched the others who followed Naruto into the inner keep, and she sensed many of them had lost the guidance of grace. In contrast, some – the others, have a fleeting sight of it, but it is merely a distant light behind their eyes.
"…" she kept herself quiet as her eye settled back into that one Tarnished, and she knew instinctively that this woman was blessed by grace. Melina could feel the strength of runes within her; therefore, she knew that this Tarnished had a maiden beforehand.
Questions formed within her mind as she watched this Tarnished and the others enter the inner keep of Stormveil, undoubtedly, to be questioned by the one with whom she made an accord.
"!"
Something, however, caught Melina's eye: a Crucible Knight atop the ramparts with the Stargazer, and she tried to make out what they were conversing about; however, what surprised her was when the Crucible Knight took off its helm and showed a woman, beautiful and scarred, her red hair was tied into a knot.
She saw as the Stargazer - Aurelius, took the knight's helm into his hands, then he raised it slightly towards the sky, and then, she heard his words as if they were whispers in the wind.
"… a new order arises, one that is of gold and silver, of sun and moon, day and night… oh God, Father of All, cast down Thy light into this world, and grant Thine servant armour of fair silver, glistening as the brightest moon in the darkest night, to serve and protect that which is eternal… purify that primordial crucible of all life, into pure creation…"
On that radiant day, Melina saw the axe helm of the knight turned into something else, a crested helm of silver, embossed with imagery unknown to her, with a plume of purple horsehair and a motif not of the Lands Between.
She then observed the knight kneel before the Stargazer and saw that the knight's armour had also changed; the bronze had vanished and was replaced by something entirely new. The tattered cape of the knight turned into a flowing cloak of white over the silver armour that reflected the radiant sun; then, Melina saw Aurelius place the helm over the knight's head.
"… rise, Katia, fair Knight of Silver."
Naruto looked towards the direction of the Stargazer, as he knew something had shifted in the air, but there was nothing ominous in what he felt; instead, it felt calm. Like one summer day, in the fields, with nothing but the sun and the steady winds.
The Tarnished woman from the Land of Reeds froze in her place, as her attention was drawn to somewhere else, but in the same general direction that Naruto looked at.
"…" her fists tightened beneath her gloves as she stared at the ramparts, and it was here that Naruto noticed her and her emotions.
"… hoh, what's this? Regrets, anger, sadness… all she feels about herself as she stares towards… oh…" Kurama voiced what Naruto felt, and the new Lord of Stormveil followed the woman's gaze towards the ramparts.
"… Melina."
Indeed, they all saw Melina at the ramparts, but she was looking at the Stargazer near her rather than Naruto and the group of Tarnished with him.
"… something feels off with this Tarnished samurai," muttered Matatabi as she relaxed within the mindscape, and the others agreed with her thoughts.
"She does feel like fresh off another time and space, come to think about it… but it seems she and Melina have a shared past," voiced Kokuo as she shifted within the mindscape.
"… I would defer to the Stargazer on this matter," stated Kaguya as she made her presence known to the rest, but she retreated as fast as she appeared, or so how it seemed, but in fact, she left the mindscape entirely and manifested right beside Naruto, much to the surprise to every person near him, except of course, for him.
"Welcome, Tarnished warriors, to Stormveil." Her voice was low, almost sultry, and it echoed through the castle walls that even those in the ramparts looked down towards her.
Her arms opened wide, and she hovered slightly above the ground, which meant her long sweeping hair touched the castle grounds, and the Tarnished noticed it, though that was not what took their attention the most. Their eyes were drawn to her face as they saw her pale skin, not to mention the pale eyes and the two horns that protruded from her head.
But there is another thing that silenced them.
"Kaguya, you'll kill them with your sheer presence; we don't want that," commented Naruto as he observed the people that came to see him.
The ancient Ōtsutsuki closed her eyes and sighed as she withheld her aura, which allowed the others to breathe normally and broke their frozen status.
"I only desired for them to be welcomed properly in this place, my lord husband."
"Hahahahaha!"
Naruto bit his lips as he prevented himself from making an audible and noticeable visual reaction as the Tailed Beasts roared in laughter after Kaguya's words left her mouth.
"Wow, Kaguya is teasing you; what a most auspicious day!"
"Yeah, yeah, go ahead and laugh." His sarcastic reply made the others laugh hard at him, and fortunately for them, Kaguya could not hear them because if she could, she would tie the tails of the Tailed Beasts together in a knot.
However, Naruto tuned them out rather quickly as he focused back on Kaguya and how she just rendered the group of Tarnished silent, though he did notice that the samurai Tarnished had her eyes widened as she eyed Kaguya, then him.
"…" It looked like she wanted to say something, but the words failed her, and it never came out; alas, her shock from earlier resurfaced, and this time, it did not subside.
"… you say that you seek shelter, do you not?" his voice was raised slightly as if to awaken them from the stupor induced by Kaguya's presence, and it was effective, as the knight from earlier showed.
"Yes, my lord," he answered with a nod.
The new lord hummed to himself before he eyed each one of them silently, and after that brief pause, he turned his eyes to one Kenneth Haight, apparently the rightful heir of Limgrave, but as things stood, he might as well forget that claim even existed.
"Very well, make yourself at home within the quarters to your right; find Castellan Edgar there; you'll know him by his armour," he ordered, and the Tarnished nodded, but Naruto was not finished as his eyes fell towards a specific man. "Afterwards, we shall talk, one by one, starting with you, Kenneth Haight, now."
Kin, or how Naruto named the former Tree Sentinel, stood a silent vigil near her new lord as he conversed with each Tarnished, plus the apparent heir to Limgrave, who is not a Tarnished, but a noble of the lands and, indeed, the man repeated that fact multiple times earlier, but all's well that ends, as he forfeited any claims right there and then.
Which is to say, he requested that his fort be retaken, garrisoned and supplied correctly, as he deemed Naruto fit to be Lord of Limgrave, and he, the Great Kenneth Haight, a loyal vassal for the days to come, though, the poor man has no idea what that entailed.
But, for the Tarnished, Naruto had spent more time talking with, as they provided him with information, alongside the skills they can use to serve Stormveil because, restored it may be, it is in dire need of essential services, such as a smith, a quartermaster, and everything else a castle needed to function correctly over the land it stands on.
"… of course, as I said earlier, my lord, many of us have lost the guidance of grace and are maidenless…" said the knight, his helm gone, and he was a man around the same age as Edgar, only he possessed brown hair, brown, but greying hair.
"Lost, without purpose… in these accursed land as we travelled, together and on our own, living off scraps, fighting all manner of creatures for the few runes that we can use to barter goods…" his emotions were clear as day to Naruto as he listened silently behind his desk.
"Then," the knight perked up as he stared straight into Naruto's unflinching eyes. "… beyond the horizon, mine eyes glimmered with hope rekindled when I saw Stormveil as it stands now, a beacon of light, amidst the storm, beneath the rays of gold."
His eyes averted Naruto's gaze as he looked down at his hands. "… as a knight, I'm pledged to honesty, and honest I shall be, my lord… I seek not only a shelter but a purpose."
"Even if it violates the Golden Order?" voiced Naruto, and the knight was visibly stunned at his query.
Naruto watched him as he sat down there, silent and contemplating his words, heavy as they were, for the knight followed Godfrey, the first Elden Lord when he was hounded from Leyndell.
They were silent for a while, and suddenly, some realisation came upon the knight's eyes.
"… I remember…" he whispered at first, then burst out louder. "I remember now!"
The Lord of Stormveil merely raised an eyebrow at the exclamation of the knight.
"Queen Marika, the words she parted to Lord Godfrey and us."
"Oh?" visibly interested, Naruto leaned closer from his desk while the Tailed Beasts within also listened.
"… she said on that fateful day, my lord and thy warriors. I divest each of thee of thy grace. With thine eyes dimmed, ye will be driven from the Lands Between. Ye will wage war in a land afar, where ye will live and die…"
Unknown to the knight, others listened to him other than Naruto and Kin.
In the aether, Melina listened, for she knew those words all too well, spoken echoes of Queen Marika which lingered in the Lands Between.
"Then, after thy death, I will give back what I once claimed. Return to the Lands Between, wage war, and brandish the Elden Ring. Grow strong in the face of death. Warriors of my lord. Lord Godfrey… and that was it, we were banished away, and my memories have gone dark ever since," he explained while Naruto tried to decipher the Queen's words, and an image began to form in his mind.
"But Marika shattered the Elden Ring," stated Naruto, and the knight nodded grimly.
"Yes, my lord. What is noteworthy, however, is that, between the Night of the Black Knives and the Shattering, something went awry other than the death of Lord Godwyn. Still, I do not know what… regardless, the Queen's actions after the death of her eldest son openly violated the Golden Order…" he trailed on, then the doors opened and revealed Kaguya, as she hovered into the room.
"Which is to say that Marika wanted you Tarnished warriors to violate the Golden Order as well."
The knight grimaced as he gave a curt nod in response to Kaguya, and she hovered towards Naruto's right.
"Even so, questions remain," she began before she finally sat beside Naruto. "… but in his actions…"
She turned her pale eyes towards Naruto, whose eyebrows raised. "That is, by claiming a Great Rune - Godrick's rune, he has already violated the Golden Order, and I see no point in dodging around this; my question remains thus: will you work under him? Given that you served the first Elden Lord?"
Naruto realised what Kaguya wanted immediately, and he was not surprised at the woman's actions.
Kaguya Ōtsutsuki is a woman of ambition, misguided as it were, and he had redirected that ambition to other ends, his ends, and given the fact that she was unsealed long after he had become the Hokage, it took a lot to convince her to stand with him against the rest of her clan.
Now, here she was, years later, helping him, even though it may prove detrimental or how Kurama and the others described it.
"The old hag doesn't beat around the bush, which is probably her best and worst trait," muttered Kurama while Naruto listened.
"If I may," a new voice interrupted them, and it was Aurelius, with the former Crucible Knight behind him.
"What is it, Holy Father?"
Aurelius glanced behind him before he turned towards Naruto, Kaguya and the knight, then at Kin. "Before our Tarnished friend here responds, may I propose a certain… order of things?"
Naruto motioned him to continue.
"As you are Lord of Limgrave now, that is, Lord of Gold and Silver, it is only fitting, I believe, that you should have Knights of Gold and Silver, two distinct orders, creating a true union of Gold and Silver, the Sun and the Moon."
It was Kaguya who reacted first, given that this was a personal note to her. "… Hagoromo was the sun, and Hamura was the moon, together… they…"
"Sealed you," finished Aurelius, but he continued. "The same case with Lord Seventh and Sasuke Uchiha; they were the sun and the moon when you were sealed the second time, Lady Kaguya. I know, but it was a time long passed, and where are you now? At the side of the one who punched you in the face after that dreadful jutsu."
Even the Tailed Beasts were surprised at the response of the old-looking man, and Naruto was still surprised to hear that the old man knew his past, as well as Kaguya's, though slight embarrassment crept in him when he remembered what Aurelius implied.
"… that jutsu saved the world, though."
The Kaguya of old would be livid, but this Kaguya merely sighed and nodded in agreement. "… thou art right, Stargazer… please, continue."
The Stargazer, as he was addressed, nodded in gratitude. "… as I was saying, two orders of knights, distinct but together, create a whole. Serving the same end, under you as Lord of Gold and Silver."
"Behind me is Katia, one of the old Crucible Knights that directly worked under the Elden Lord Godfrey, but as you can see, she is now of silver, out of that primordial bronze."
As soon as he said that introduction, the silver-armoured knight stepped forward and took her place beside the Stargazer, and it was then that Naruto saw what the old man's work looked like.
"… oh." that was the only thing that came out of his mouth as he glanced down at his armour.
"Yes," said the Stargazer. "The armour you are wearing is the basis for her armour, or rather, the silver part of yours, which is in gold and silver."
"I also intend to give Kin a new armour," he continued while the former Tree Sentinel shifted slightly in her vigil. "Still of gold, but not of the Erdtree. Hence, she shall be Kin, Knight of Gold."
"Though she has to accept that first," he ended as eyes turned towards the looming sentinel, and she visibly nodded, her helm covering whatever emotions she had on her silent façade.
"Ah, wonderful," joyfully said by Aurelius as he clasped his hands together. "We now have a knight of Gold and Silver."
A/N: Yes, the female Samurai is us, the player Tarnished, doing a new game plus, but is completely surprised at what she sees, also, Melina instinctively hates her, so you can guess which ending this Tarnished had taken.
The other Tarnished, most prominently, the knight, represents those other players that we ask for help with, and of course, the knight featured here is one of the Tarnished that were kicked out by Marika.
Also, yes, Varré and Yura made a cameo, they'll have their own stuff written later, especially the White Mask, since Roderika already met him and has told Naruto about him. So, the Mohg storyline will get an overhaul most definitely.
Those two have taken interest in Naruto.
