Renee and Jack brought Marika downstairs. She was terrified. Renee tried to offer support. "Now, listen, if you get into trouble, you can signal us by dialing one-zero -"
"No," Jack interrupted. "No, I don't want you to do that. Don't do anything that's going to raise the suspicion of the driver."
"Okay," Marika agreed nervously. She left the building and waited out by the curb. Jack and Renee watched from inside the building.
"What the hell are you doing?" Jack asked Renee, mad that she had almost given Marika a way to contact them.
"She was scared," Renee rationalized, annoyed with him for being so cold-hearted. "I wanted her to know there was another option rather than waiting for us to swoop in."
"If we're going to find Dubaku, there are no other options," Jack reminded her. "You understand? Come on, you've run operations like this."
"Not without full tactical support and at least two backup units," Renee scolded. "She's naked out there, Jack. I don't like it."
"This isn't about you," Jack lectured. "This is about her and Dubaku. Listen, life gets ugly. Innocent people get hurt. That's a reality. At least she got to make a choice to be involved, to do the right thing. Which is a lot more than I can say for Dubaku's other victims. We have one job here and that's to get Dubaku. Outside of that, don't get involved."
Renee looked like she wanted to rebut but the car pulled up outside.
"Chloe, the car is here," Jack told her over com. The driver came around and got the door for Marika. "She's getting in the car."
"Copy," Chloe confirmed.
"She's moving," Jack said. "Are you locked in?"
"Yeah, I've got them heading south on 14th," Chloe told him.
Jack and Renee ran out to their car.
"Head towards 14th and make a right," Chloe instructed. Jack drove following Chloe's instructions.
Jack was giving updates on his location and Renee was surprised by the fact that Jack was listing street names without seeming to even glance at the street signs.
"You know these streets?" Renee questioned.
"I lived in Washington for a year," Jack explained. "A lifetime ago."
"Did you like it?"
"One of the best years of my life," Jack answered. Renee saw that he tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"Woah," they heard over com from Larry. "What was that? What happened?"
"Jack, we've got a problem," Chloe announced.
"Chloe, what's wrong?" Jack asked.
"We just lost the tracking grid," Chloe informed him, panicking. "It just suddenly glitched out."
"We can't afford to lose them," Renee insisted. "Jack, I gave this woman my word we'd protect her."
"I know. Chloe, get it back up," Jack urged.
"Wait," Chloe said, confused. "It's back up."
"What the hell happened?" Jack asked.
"I don't know," said Chloe. "I'm running a diagnostic right now."
Larry updated them on Marika's location and Jack resituated their position.
"Oh no," Chloe murmured. "Somebody was in the system."
"What?" Larry asked.
"I'm saying someone in this office was mirroring my terminal. Whoever it was knows exactly what we were doing."
"Jack, are you getting this? It looks like we might have a security breach," Larry informed him. "Someone was mirroring our com."
Jack knew that whoever was working for Dubaku in the FBI had caught on to their ruse. Jack heard sirens approaching. Then he saw police cars that seemed to be blocking the road.
"Jack, they're coming from all sides," Renee pointed out.
"Larry, we got a situation here," Jack told him. "I got Metro PDs trying to build a roadblock around us."
"Why would they be doing that?"
"I don't know. Just get them off us!"
But, soon they were completely surrounded by cop cars with nowhere to go. The police demanded that they get out of the car with their hands up. Jack tried to explain but they wouldn't listen. Jack could hear Larry on the phone trying to straighten this out. Apparently the FBI had put out a federal warrant for the vehicle that Jack and Renee were driving. Larry tried to explain that this was a mistake but Jack already knew - this mission was blown and they were going to lose Dubaku.
Renee and Jack were pushed into the back of the police car as Larry tried to talk to the Captain.
"That warrant had to have been sent out by one of Dubaku's operatives," Renee told Jack.
"I know," Jack agreed.
"Then Dubaku knows that Marika is working with us," she said bitterly. "He will kill her, Jack. We should not have used her like this."
"We didn't have a choice. She was our only asset."
"She's not an asset, Jack. She's a human being," Renee spat. They both went silent until the cops released them. Renee got on the phone with Larry and asked about Marika while Jack brought the car around. Renee got in quickly.
"They lost Marika's signal," Renee told Jack as he sped away. Renee told him where to head.
"Jack, we got a make on the car. It's a dark gray Jeep Grand Cherokee turned south on 11th street about two minutes ago," Larry said into the com.
"Copy that," Jack confirmed. "Moving to intercept."
"Did you see Marika?" Renee asked.
"Yes, she got in the car with Dubaku."
"Chloe, stay on those traffic cams," Jack insisted. Chloe let Jack know where they were regularly.
They were now close enough to see the car but were stuck in traffic behind them.
"Jack, they're turning left," Renee told him. Jack swerved into the other lane to pass traffic and took a sharp left turn through the grass to catch up. He avoided pedestrians and landed back on the road right behind the Jeep. He continued to swerve in and out of traffic, following behind Dubaku. Until the car sped through an intersection, leaving Jack to crash into a taxi.
"Get on top of the car," Jack instructed Renee. "See if you can maintain a visual."
As Renee watched, she saw the car swerve for no apparent reason and crash into another car, causing the Jeep to flip and roll. Marika had to have put up a fight. "Jack, they crashed!"
Renee and Jack ran as fast as they could towards the car.
"Larry, Dubaku's vehicle's been involved in an accident," Jack informed him. "We need an ambulance now!"
Larry called an ambulance as Jack and Renee approached the car. A man was climbing out the front windshield, the driver. Jack ordered him to get on his knees but the man reached for his gun instead. Jack shot him and he fell to the ground. They walked to the car with guns drawn. Jack spotted Dubaku.
"I got Dubaku," he said, moving to the other side of the car where Dubaku was trying to get out. Jack grabbed him and dragged him away from the smoking vehicle. Renee was working on getting Marika's unconscious body out of the car.
"Agent Walker, the car is on fire!" Jack yelled, as he threw Dubaku's gun away from him. Renee didn't move away from the car. "Get out of there!"
Dubaku was unable to move and Jack saw that Renee was still by the car. He ran over to her and tried to pull her away. Renee turned on him and pulled out her gun.
"I gave her my word, so back off or help me!" Renee yelled, pointing her gun at him. Jack relented and moved to the other side of the car to help. "It's her leg. It's pinned."
Jack found the piece of metal that was holding the girl's leg down and lifted it while Renee pulled her out of the car. The side Jack had entered from was on fire and Jack climbed out the other side of the car. He grabbed one of Marika's arms and helped drag her away from the car quickly knowing that it was going to be completely engulfed in flames any second.
"Go!" he shouted to Renee. And, as they just made it out of range, the car burst into a large fire that knocked them to the ground.
"You alright?" he asked Renee. Renee nodded and then got to work on doing CPR on Marika. Jack ran back to Dubaku who was still lying motionless on the sidewalk.
"Larry, where is the ambulance?" Jack questioned. "Dubaku's badly injured. He's unconscious. I need that ambulance now."
"They're on their way, Jack," Larry assured him.
Jack looked over at Renee who had stopped chest compressions on Marika. Marika lay motionless on the ground and Jack knew that she had died. Renee looked utterly defeated.
Soon, ambulances and firetrucks flooded the street. Jack led the EMTs to Dubaku. After a few minutes, Jack approached them again.
"You got him stabilized?" Jack asked.
"Yes, sir," one of the EMTs said. "We're transporting him right now."
"Bring him around. I need to talk to him."
"Sir, he's in no condition to speak right now."
"This man has information vital to national security. Bring him around now."
"One milligram epinephrine," the EMT called out. Another EMT brought the epinephrine and injected it into Dubaku. It was enough to wake him with a start.
"I know you can hear me," Jack said in Dubaku's ear. "You're in federal custody. These paramedics are trying to save your life. You want them to continue, you're gonna tell me what I want to know. I want the names of everyone in the United States government that you've been working with."
Dubaku stayed silent.
"Come on," Jack urged. "You and I both know the game. It's over for you now. There's no sense in trying to protect them."
Still nothing.
"You and I were both soldiers," Jack said, trying to appeal to another side of him. "I know you don't care about your own life but you have a family. I know where your son is in Sangala. I know where he lives and I swear to you I will track him down and I will make him suffer. I will make sure he knows his father was responsible. All you've got to do to make me stop is give me the names. Just give me the names."
"Don't hurt my family," Dubaku pleaded. "I have a lis - list."
Dubaku's eyes rolled backwards.
"His BP is spiking!" The EMT called out.
"Where is the list?" Jack shouted, trying to wake him back up.
"He's going into cardiac arrest."
"Bring him back!" Jack demanded the EMTs. The EMTs used the defibrillator to try to bring him back but the paddles weren't working whenever they held them to Dubaku's chest. They looked around for the issue while Jack looked in Dubaku's clothing for the list.
"This could be it," one of them thought. "It feels like a metal plate or something."
They tried shocking him again with no luck.
"Where's the plate?" Jack asked them. They showed him the spot below his rib cage that had a slight bulge."
Jack ordered the EMT to open up the spot on Dubaku to retrieve the piece of metal but the EMT refused. Jack pressed his gun into the man's side. The EMT moved into action and cut into him. Jack reached into the incision and grabbed the metal piece, his fingers dripping with blood. He knew that this was it. Dubaku kept the list inside him for safe keeping.
