"...What is this and why am I here?"
Cale wasn't even surprised anymore.
Sudden dimensional travel? Big deal. It wasn't like he hadn't visited at least three different dimensions before.
No, he really wasn't surprised. He was simply tired.
'Just when will I get to become a slacker?' he thought with deep longing.
"According to what Avatar Roku told me," a bald kid with a giant blue arrow tattooed on his forehead replied "We are currently in a rift between the Physical World and the Spirit Word."
"Wow, you mean, a dimensional anomaly of some sort?" Another kid, this one with a green bush on his head and freckled cheeks, pulled out a notebook out of nowhere and started making notes. "Is it temporary?"
"I… think so?" The bald kid said hesitantly, rubbing his chin. "I mean, it never happened to me before, but Roku didn't seem all that concerned. So it's probably alright."
"So cool!" The green kid had sparkles of excitement in his eyes. "I get to meet real people from other dimensions! Amazing! What's your name? I'm Izuku Midoriya," the teenager introduced himself, reaching out with his hand. He seemed like a nice kid. He was definitely not the type of person Cale would get along with.
"I'm Aang, nice to meet you!"
The two shook hands. Then they turned to Cale.
"What's your name, mister?" Aang asked with an innocent smile. He seemed like a very nice kid as well. Yeah, these two definitely weren't his type of people, but they were children. So Cale just sighed and responded with a slight nod:
"Cale Henituse."
"Nice to meet you!"
"Nice to meet you, sir."
The two teens greeted him, one with a carefree wave, another one with a slightly familiar bow. Despite Izuku's hair and eyes being forest green, his posture made something click in Cale's head as he made a connection.
"Are you… Japanese by any chance, kid?"
"Well, yes I am!" Izuku blinked in surprise. "Aren't you? We're all speaking Japanese right now…?"
"What's Japanese?" Aang asked curiously.
"We are not," Cale explained to them. "There is something about dimensional travel that allows you to understand other people's languages. I've never learned Japanese and I definitely don't speak… what nationality are you, Aang? Chinese? Tibetan?"
"Actually, I'm an Air Nomad!"
"...whatever language Air Nomads speak."
"You mean, we're all using our native tongue and yet we're able to understand each other?!" Izuku started furiously writing in his notebook, his enthusiasm so vibrant Cale was tempted to step back a bit from it. "That's amazing! I have so many questions! Are our brains translating foreign sound into familiar output, or are our vocal chords subconsciously using foreign words? What about cultural references? Professional vocabulary? Wordplay? How does-?"
"Anyway," Cale interrupted the kid's well-intended but exhausting muttering before he could drown in it "Aang, you said that Roku person gave you some information on our current situation, right? How do we get out of here?"
"Weeell…" Aang cleared his throat. "Apparently, we've been brought here by someone called 'the God of Death'…?"
"I knew it," Cale muttered, very tempted to viciously curse at the damn bastard. Unfortunately, he was already dealing with Eruhaben's judging stare due to Raon using adult language because of him. He would rather avoid being a bad influence on those two innocent kids, if he could help it.
"...Roku said he wanted us to create something called, an 'Avatar Club'? Are you two Avatars in your own dimensions or something?"
"What's an Avatar?" asked Izuku, tilting his head. His head looked like a fluffy cotton ball.
'I should probably buy the kids some cotton balls to play with when I get back,' Cale decided on a whim. Cats liked that kind of stuff, right? And cotton balls were cheaper, not to mention surely less destructive, than their usual 'toys'.
(Cale would regret that later, as his very creative children were capable of turning even cotton balls into weapons of mass destruction.
Of course, Cale was very proud of how he raised them.)
"An Avatar… hm, how to explain it… The Avatar is a Bridge Between the Human and the Spirit World?"
"You mean you regularly dimension travel?" Cale asked a bit curiously.
"No, not really. Sometimes? Just my spirit, though."
"I see. What else?"
"The Avatar is the master of all four elements-"
"You mean five elements?"
"No, four, like I- wait, what? Your dimension has five?"
"Yeah? Wait, is wood not an elemental attribute in your world?"
"No? How is wood an element?! It's a living thing! Isn't life the combination of all four elements?"
"...I guess our worlds work a bit differently, then."
"Amazing." Izuku Midoriya kept making notes of everything.
"So you're saying that an Avatar is someone who can use all the elements and dimension-travel with his spirit."
"Also, they have the duty to keep balance between the nations."
"You mean, you're a peacekeeper?" Izuku spoke up, his hand pausing. "You're a hero?"
"Kind of." Aang admitted with a quirky grin.
"This is so, so cool," the other breathed out, handing him the notebook. "Can I have your autograph?"
Cale was starting to have a suspicion what being in the 'Avatar Club' entailed, and he did not like it one bit.
"...Are you a hero of some kind, Izuku?"
"Not yet… I am a hero-in-training, though. I want to become the kind of hero who saves people with a big smile! What about you? Are you a hero, sir?"
"No." Cale replied firmly. "Absolutely not."
Izuku deflated slightly. Aang patted him on the back.
"What else is there to, 'being an Avatar', according you your world standards?" Cale quickly questioned Aang again, really wanting to just get over it before Izuku asked him for an autograph as well – or heaven forbid, looked at him with the same disturbingly sparkling eyes he gave Aang a moment ago.
"I don't know, that's pretty much it," Aang told him honestly.
"You said you can control four elements?" Izuku asked him, his enthusiasm returning. "You mean water, earth, fire and wind? You have four quirks?"
"Yes – uh, what do you mean, 'quirks'?"
"Powers? Whatever you call people using abilities in your world."
"We call it bending."
"We call it ancient powers in my world," Cale added.
"Ancient powers?" Izuku turned to him immediately. "Why 'ancient'?"
"They're usually very old, that's all. They're also passed on from person to person."
"Wait, my powers are also passed on from person to person!" Aang immediately made the connection. "The Avatar reincarnates and there can be only one at a time."
"My power also-!" Izuku started to say, then suddenly stopped with a pale face. Cale realized that the kid must have slipped up and shared some major secret.
"...your power also is passed on from person to person, is that it?"
"Ahhh, but I'm not supposed to tell people about it!" Izuku exclaimed, burying his head in his hands. "I can't believe I told someone again, All Might will be so disappointed in me..."
"Relax, kid. I really don't care about your secrets."
"Yeah, don't worry about it!" Aang patted his shoulder in comfort. "It's not like we'll be going around telling people about it – we're not even from the same dimension!"
"...that's true." Izuku nodded, still looking quite flustered despite the reassurance.
"So, being an Avatar means receiving multiple powers from other people…?" Cale mused, then asked: "Do people in your world usually only have one power at most?"
"Yeah," Aang and Izuku replied at the same time.
"And do you… hear the voices of the previous owners of your powers?"
"Sometimes!"
"Occasionally…"
"And don't tell me," Cale said slowly, really wishing to be proven wrong, "That you also happen to fight against an evil nut-job who wants to rule the world?"
"Pretty much!"
"How did you know?"
Cale stared into the distance for a while. Then, after a long moment, he sighed and facepalmed, feeling completely done with his life.
'Goddammit. We really are the Avatar Club.'
Author's Note:
Thank you for reading! Just a fun idea I had. I hope you liked it!
For those who don't know, I have a back-up account on AO3, and the only reason why some of my stories aren't posted HERE, is because the Korean webnovel "Trash of the Count's Family" doesn't have a category at fanfiction, it seems?! I even requested for it to be added! But it didn't work. So please feel free to check out my AO3 account, and if you're unfamiliar with the novel, make sure to check it out too! They have a comic ("manhwa") series as well. It's a really great fantasy story.
Please leave a review if you liked the story, follow and add to favorites if you can, but most importantly – read on and enjoy :)
