A Nation Reborn
Disclaimer: I do not in anyway shape or form own Fallout, nor am I associated with them to any degree. The franchise belongs to Bethesda and I am in no way associated with them. This is a non-profit fan work written for the sole purpose of entertainment. This is in no way canon.
Responses to questions or statements:
-edboy4926: Thanks. As for the idea regarding Outlast, I'll be sure to think about it. Being in control of a swarm of nanomachines does seem rather cool, minus the process to become one.
-WerewolfXZ: I am considering having Thomas add more modern weapons in the future like the M4A1, MK18, M240, HK416, Colt Model 933s, M27 IARs, etc., in the future. Maybe I'll even include some tacticool guns like the Sig MCX, FN SCAR-L, BCM CQB-11, Kriss Vector, and CZ Scorpion EVO 3 to name a few, though I haven't decided yet. As of now, the weapons in the Fallout universe are limited to weapons made in the eighties and nineties like the ones I mentioned in the previous chapter.
-Gwynx: I am thinking on having Thomas and the Enclave get their hands on Chinese stealth suits in a future chapter. As for the SPI armor in Halo, that is a pretty cool idea and definitely one I'll be considering. Thanks for the idea and enjoy the chapter.
-Hazyimp: Thanks, man. I'm glad that you like my story. Hope you like this chapter.
-Krieger Techpreist: Nice. Glad to see you got my Starship Troopers reference.
-Guest: Thanks, man. I appreciate it.
-The Communist Banana: Thank you, glad you liked the reference to Starship Troopers.
-Also…communist? (Secretly calls Liberty Prime). Just to be clear, this is a joke, please don't take this seriously.
-John999: For the rebellions, that may happen in the future, but not now as Thomas is more focused on gathering up allies and consolidating his current powerbase as he works on getting them to the east coast. Given that the NCR is on the west coast along with the majority of the Brotherhood of steel at the moment, they aren't really a priority as Thomas is concentrating on building his own nation first, not really caring about the NCR and others so long as they aren't a threat.
-As for the Chinese remnants, Thomas and the Enclave may encounter some in the future. Once the reborn United States has a solid foothold, Thomas may send teams to different continents and countries overseas to conduct reconnaissance, gather valuable materials, and perhaps dispatch diplomatic envoys to establish alliances or agreements. Though, that's just an idea I have, how did you know? I'm just joking btw. Anyways, hope you like this new chapter.
-TOPCAT-59: Is that right? I'll have to do some research on that.
-Jayden890: Thank you. I'll definitely be considering parts of the America Rising mod, though I can't say for certain.
-UselessKhan69: Yeah. I mean, that thing looks absolutely cumbersome and not functional in the slightest. You got to wonder what Bethesda was thinking when they were designing it.
-As for Starfield, I'm aware of Bethesda's track record which is why I said I'm being cautious about it, I just personally want to be excited for this game as I've wanted a game like this for my entire life. I mean, I want Bethesda to succeed in this game, I take no joy when games I'm excited for turn out to be bad. I just want video game releases to be good so that I can spend hours diving into the world, lore, characters, etc. But I am keeping my expectations at reasonable levels just in case it turns out to be a mess.
-frankiebayer2002: Thanks. Hope you like this chapter.
-DG2: Thank you.
-Warmachine324: I'm still thinking on it so maybe, can't make any confirmations.
-Endymon Selene: I'll have to check on that. Regardless, for this fic weapons made in the nineties were made before the nuclear war.
-ComradeRyazen: The main character does have plans to revitalization the habitable areas so don't worry. As for the home front, MC has started spreading his influence in the region as you can see in this chapter.
-TheButteredCrumpet: Thanks, man. Hope you like this update.
-Judgement of the Arbiter: Thanks. Hope this update was good.
-BrotherCaptainSheperd: Yup, couldn't resist putting that in when I was writing that chapter. Are you doing your part?
-Guest: Thank you for your thoughts. I do have plans to have Thomas add modern weapons to the Fallout verse. Anyway, here's the chapter.
-Sleepycrawler1: Thank you. I hope you like this update.
-Yabadook: I mean, I suppose he could. Though Thomas is not in a rush yet to release the protagonist of Fallout 4 out of his sleeping pod yet, as he's currently working on other stuff at the moment.
-Acoop: Here you go, mate. Hope this was satisfactory.
-Kennymadison11: Yeah, now that you mention it that does seem right.
-Septic332: The year should be 2244.
-Guest: Thank you very much. Hope this chapter is satisfactory.
-Knight Shake: I'm glad you're enjoying it. Yeah, I don't expect Starfield to be perfect, I just hope that the gameplay is solid and that the characters and story are at least decent. Though the game will definitely have bugs at launch, there's no denying that. I really am hoping that Bethesda actually succeeds in making a good game, as I take no pleasure in seeing games that I'm hyped for turn out to be buggy messes.
-mattidwell6: Thank you. Hope you like this chapter.
-deathcombo99: Thank you very much. Hope this chapter was alright.
-Guest: Sorry, but I've never watched RWBY, so I most likely won't be adding your suggestion. Apologies for this.
-S.R.457: Thanks :).
-Guest: Really? I'll have to check that again.
Chapter 5
(Location: Raven Rock, Washington D.C)
"What I've done.
I'll face myself.
To cross out what I've become.
Erase myself.
And let go of what I've done."
Thomas sang to himself a song that every kid in the early 2000s his timeline has heard at least once as he worked on one of his various side projects that he worked on in his free time in between his duties and responsibilities. Currently, he was working on creating equipment and technology from other 'fictional' franchises he saw in his first life in additional to the actual tech in his world.
At the moment, he was finishing developing a portable, hand-held M314 motion tracker used by the Colonial Marines in the "Aliens" movie along with the film's M240 Incinerator unit and UA 571-C Automated Sentry Gun- he wasn't able to successfully recreate the M41A1 pulse rifle. Thanks to having all the world's knowledge literally downloaded into his brain, he was able to work out the tech and kinks in the gear relatively quickly as he worked on it in Raven Rock's Research & Development section. With luck, he soon be able to begin mass production of all the gear he developed and would soon be utilized by his forces. He also planned to create a technical manual detailing how to operate the equipment as well as maintain it, which he took great pains to make sure that it was simple as possible in accordance with the keep-it-simple-stupid (K.I.S.S) policy for equipment that militaries in his time used.
It wouldn't do to have military gear that was too complicated to use and maintain by the common soldier. He would also need to ensure that the hardware he provided was easy to produce as well as reliable in the field during the harshest conditions.
"Maybe I should bring back the U.S Marine Corp in the future, along with the other branches once I get enough people to join me?" Thomas pondered as he recalled that the director based the Colonial Marines off the USMC, albeit he based them more on Army draftees during the Vietnam war than actual Marines from what he read online. He made a notification to remind him to think further on this as he continued working.
Thankfully, what he had created so far didn't require the transistor, a semiconductor that replaced tubes in the construction of computers which allowed computers to reduce in size and power and perform the same functions as before. It was a key component that helped to spearhead the creation of many technologies in his words like laptops, smart phones, different types of TVs, and many more.
While he knew that the transistor was developed at some point in the Fallout universe, he unfortunately didn't know where it was as for some reason the information wasn't stored on his database nor did he recall it from his memories on the wiki he had read long ago. Thomas was too controlled to start swearing profusely, but it nevertheless greatly frustrated with as with this vital device he could expand his experiments and start creating more advance equipment.
Sadly, there wasn't much he could do at the moment other than continue to dispatch salvage teams to sites that could potentially have it. He could try to create the device on his own, but already had a lot on his plate as his desk was almost constantly swamped with work and side projects. He wasn't sure he had time to commit to it at the moment.
Therefore, Thomas decided to shelf the project for a later date.
He was also taking this as an opportunity to take a break from going over the latest reports sent to him from Enclave High Command regarding the reintegration of various settlements and towns into the U.S among other things such as information data packages and requests for various projects. This had become routine and the first thing he did over the last few weeks whenever he woke up from his few hours of rest each day was check his messages inbox. He was beginning to appreciate these periods more and more as they provided a reprieve from the hours upon hours of work each day.
As of now, they had managed to bring over a dozen towns and settlements into the fold. Bring their total population to a few hundred thousand at the moment, with estimates that at the end of the year that number will grow to at least a million if they kept integrating colonies at the current rate.
Given that the area in and around Chicago it was designated as a prime spot for farmland and recolonization efforts. They've already begun constructing farms in areas that were uninhabited in addition to offering supported to the farmers already in the region, even offering them government contracts to supply the Enclave with a fixed percentage of their daily crops in exchange for protection and robots such as the Mr. Handy's to assist in cultivation and a few Protectrons and Mr. Gutsy's as a token security force to ward off wild animals and thieves. Thomas also provided them tractors to help along with other kinds of farming equipment such as plows, planters, and sprayers.
In addition, the recruitment drive Thomas's started ever since he began inducting these settlements have been a massive success. The steady stream of people into their ranks meant that whole new units could be created along with filling up new departments with the necessary staff.
With the influx of new personnel, the Enclave's manpower shortage was starting to be rectified.
Still, that only meant new problems were arising to replace the old.
He had made assurances to these settlements that the Enclave would assist in rebuilding their water systems, power lines, buildings, etc. And the Army Corp of Engineers were getting spread thin as they struggle to juggle between civilian and military projects.
To help with this, Thomas created a new organization named the American Reconstruction Authority. They were the ones tasked to deal with the civilian side of the restoration efforts as well as assist with the day-to-day stuff such as moving supplies, putting people back to work, and even a bit of humanitarian aid to those greatly affected by conflict. In addition, they helped to administrate the Enclave's newly acquired territory and worked alongside local leadership to deal with issues.
Every day, his territory grew which resulted in a need to keep the people informed on events and assure them that they had made the right choice in siding with the United States.
As such, Thomas had kickstarted a new branch of the Enclave which he dubbed the Federal Information Bureau- the name was still a work in progress-whose job was to spread the message of the Enclave- or more specifically the ideals and constitution of the pre-war United States- and maintain public support for their interests. Additionally, they were charged with informing the public with news of events and incidences happening in the wasteland through platforms like Enclave radio, posters, public events, eyebot loudspeakers. Essentially, gaining the hearts and minds of the people.
He had also created a new diplomatic service named the State Department, which was charged with negotiating with factions on behalf of the Enclave to help promote and further their interests, establish common ground between factions, and promoting understanding. For far, the ambassadors and diplomats of this new branch have done a remarkable job as they convinced several settlements to rejoin the United States in the last few weeks, increasing their population by a few hundred thousand in the last three months alone. They were also given the responsibility of opening communications with factions that weren't entirely on their side yet and resolve issues with groups without having to resort to conflict.
After all, it wouldn't do good for Thomas and the Enclave to have their reputation soured by those that knew about them if they just began slaughtering everyone that dared to oppose them. Additionally, Thomas didn't exactly feel comfortable with wiping out entire groups and committing genocide if he could help it.
"Well, except for maybe the tunnelers and cannibals."
As far as Thomas was concerned, those things weren't people any longer and they could die in a fire for all he cared. Which was why he was satisfied when the report came in from the robot task force he sent to exterminate the tunnelers informed him that the mission was a success. He'll have to deal with groups like the cannibals at a later time.
As for what was going on in the home turf, AKA Washington D.C, not much has changed other than Thomas securing sites for future use. He had taken started to make his presence known in the surrounding area using a few spare eyebots to begin spreading word of the Enclave to the surrounding area and dispatching strike teams of assaultrons, sentry bots, combat eyebots, etc. to eliminate various raider groups.
This in turn won him a few brownie points with the locals over at Megaton and other settlements in the area, whom he already sent eyebots to meet with the leaders and introduced himself as President Thomas Eden of the United States of America. He had already begun fostering ties with these encampments and started negotiating with their reintegration, although it was a bit more difficult since he could only communicate with them through eyebots and other automatons.
While Thomas would have preferred to wait until the Enclave arrives in D.C, he figured it was probably best to start ingraining himself with the locals so that he would have more time to win them over. Which would be especially helpful if somehow word got out that he wasn't human and was in fact a computer before he wanted it to.
Thomas really didn't want his administration to fall apart because the people somehow got it into their heads that he went all Skynet and decided to wipe out the human race. Though he probably shouldn't use that terminology if he ever had to directly address it as nobody in this verse would understand it.
Furthermore, Thomas developed a program to bypass firewalls and access systems and intranets. This algorithm could be downloaded on a holo tape which could then be inserted into a port that would automatically send a signal to Thomas while it broke through into the network, allowing him complete and total access to the net. He had sent this program out to the Enclave and gave them instructions on how to insert the disc into private installations and work plants.
Which was why he now had access to several intranets previously only accessible by private companies such as Nuka-Cola, Poseidon Energy, etc.
Despite much of the data not being as useful as he had hoped, it wasn't a complete waste as it did provide access companies to start up factories and facilities owned by these corporations which in turned boosted the Enclave's production capabilities as these installations pumped out sentry bots, supplies, and other kinds of gear.
It was also where Thomas discovered America's top secret strategic underground cheese storage installations.
Yeah, Thomas had to do a double take when he saw that.
From what he had found out, much like in his timeline when prohibition ended four years after the end of world war 2, the United States government began buying up all the excess milk that dairy farmers were producing and turning them into cheese before dumping them in bunkers. This continued on until these facilities were handed off to private corporations in the late 20th century. Even then, the Federal government would continue to purchase all the surplus milk until the bombs dropped.
As to why the Federal government at the time continued buying all the excess milk, based on the information he had, this happened as no U.S president wanted to be the one to crash the world economy because they didn't buy enough dairy.
Which honestly…Thomas thought was rather understandable as he wouldn't want to be the guy either.
Still, that left the question on what happened to all these blocks of cheese over the last two hundred years.
It appeared during the nuclear exchange in 2077, a few of these sites were mistaken to be locations of high importance by the Chinese and were nuked. Therefore, it was possible that once they opened the facility up, they could unleash a literal wave of American made radioactive cheese into the wasteland.
Thomas didn't even know what to say to that.
According to the information found on the documents he managed to acquire from the networks, there was nearly two billion pounds of cheese stashed away in hundreds of facilities across America. All of them housing cheese along with other items.
"Mmm. Cheese." Thomas thought to himself as he imagined himself eating a cheeseburger before realizing he literal could not eat anymore, causing him to get a little bit upset. Sure, on one hand there was no risk of him starving to death anymore, but on the other hand, cheese was awesome. Getting himself back on track, he began pondering on just want exactly, he should do with these mountains of cheese.
Obviously, for the dairy that was radioactive or bad due to their refrigeration units going offline would need to be disposed of; wouldn't want people to mistakenly eat it after all. For the rest, he would have to check if they were still fit for human consumption. Once that was done, he'll probably just give it to Enclave personnel and maybe to towns and settlements they came across as an incentive to join them.
"If this doesn't get people to join us, then I don't know what will." Thomas chuckled to himself.
On to other matters, he was still unfortunately unable to acquire a Gen-One Synth. While his eyebots and scout units did managed to find a couple out in the Boston area, they had self-destructed before Thomas could capture them.
This was concerning as Autumn Senior, the Enclave High Command staff, and the first group of Enclave personnel were due to arrive at Raven Rock in around in around eight to nine months from now at the end of the year. If he was unable to secure a synth, he would have to introduce himself in 'person' by having them come into his central AI core.
If he was unable to contact the Institute or find a Synth body by the time the Enclave reaches the east, then he wasn't going to have to determine a new course of action to introduce himself to his commanders.
All in all, it was more work for the new American President. Which has essentially become the story of his life at this point.
But for now, he figured it could wait another five minutes as he began relaxing in his virtual realm, deciding to take a break. After all, it wasn't even going to be a second in real time, only a few milliseconds. The wonders of being able able to perceive time differently to humans.
Besides, he was his own boss now. It's not like anyone can tell him no. At least for now.
"Her name is Noelle.
I have a dream about her.
She rings my bell.
I got gym class in half an hour.
Oh, how she rocks.
In keds and tube socks.
But she doesn't know who I am.
And she doesn't give a damn about me."
That's it for now, hope this chapter was satisfactory.
So, like I said in the response to comments, I'm considering having Thomas add more modern weapons into the setting like the M4A1, MK18, G36, MP7, Benelli M4, SPAS-12 etc. Maybe even some tacticool weapons like the Sig MCX, KAC, SCAR-L, Kel-Tec KSG-12, M4A1 SOPMOD Block II, Sig M250, and the M27 IAR. Let me know if your guy's thoughts on it and whether I should have the MC add them to this universe.
Also, the underground cheese storage facilities are a real thing. If anyone wants to know more on it, check out the Fat Electrician's video on it. I just recently watched and felt that I just had to include it in this story. Hope you guys liked it.
On an unrelated note, this is something I just wanted to talk about and get off my chest as it is about something that I've loved for my entire life and means a whole lot to me. So, feel free to skip this part if you're not interested. A little while ago, the trailer for Red vs Blue: The Final Season is out. Despite how much this series means to me, I think it's for the best since the last few seasons of RvB haven't exactly been the best the series has put out to say it lightly. Still, it's still sad to see that it's ending since this was the show that I grew up with and it got me through many hard times growing up. Honestly, I think it's pretty admirable that they're trying to give it a proper finale rather than having it end with the worst season (IMO). Though to be honest, I didn't hate season 15 and 17, though I will admit that season 16 and 18 was just bad. Admittedly, I also really liked season 17, though it's not my favorite. I'm also really happy that Burnie's coming back to not only voice Church again, but to write it. When the card came up in the trailer confirming that he was in fact writing it; I pumped my fist in the air.
Regardless, this feels like the closing of an era to me, and I just hope they manage to finish off the series with a bang. I'm going to miss this show. But as the old saying goes, "don't be sad that it's over, smile because it happened".
Because of everything I've said above, I'm currently considering doing a Red vs Blue fanfic, let me know if you guys are interested and whether or not you think I should write it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to rewatch Red vs Blue for the hundredth time.
To all RvB fans out there, whether you're a reader of my stories or not, it's been a ride.
Have a good day and remember… stay frosty, gents.
